This paper is one of a series on mining methods and practices published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes quarrying methods and crushing practices of the U. S. Lime. Products Corp. at its Sloan and Apex quarries. Calcining and milling processes. at the Sloan and Henderson plants also are outlined. The Sloan dolomite and limestone quarries and plant are in secs. 12 and 13, T. 23 5., R. 60 E., and sec. 18, T. 23 S., R. 61 E., M.D.B. &M., Clark County, Nev., about. 17 miles by paved highway southwest of Las Vegas (fig. 1). ABSTRACT: Use of cemented paste backfill (CPB) offers economic and environmental advantages over other backfill methods. However, many operations have limited knowledge of how their CPB behaves in situ. Therefore, to avoid over-pressuring containment barricades, backfilling strategies necessarily tend to be conservative. In situ monitoring at Barrick Gold Corporation’s Williams Mine and Inmet Mining Corporation’s Cayeli Mine has been conducted and factors controlling barricade pressures are demonstrated, including rise rates, binder content, stope geometry, and tailings properties. The application of barricade pressure monitoring on a stope-by-stope basis can increase backfilling efficiency and, thus, reduce stope cycle times, while maintaining optimal safety.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

Between 1860 and 1890 -- from the time of the American Civil War to the last decade of the 19th Century -- nickel production in North America was dominated (even monopolized) by the output of the industrial complex of the Gap Nickel Mine near Lancaster, Pennsylvania and the American Nickel Works in Camden, New Jersey. In some years, from one sixth to one third of the world's metallic nickel supply came from this enterprise. Mining and smelting were conducted at Lancaster; a matte of high iron content was shipped to Camden for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical refining to produce nickel metal, copper sulfate, and cobalt oxide. The high purity nickel product was rolled into sheet for marketing, primarily for coinage, as nickel had few other uses at that time. The undertaking experienced all of the problems that face the mining and metallurgical industries of today: declining reserves, high labor and fuel costs, high transportation costs, fluctuating demand and prices, pollution concerns, and foreign competition. The technical features of the geology; the mining, smelting, and refining operations; and some of the economic aspects are assessed. The view is taken from that of the present time -- seeking those lessons from history that we are supposed to learn or face the prospect of repeating the mistakes of the past.

A study has been made of the use of ThO2-Y2O3 solid electrolytes to determine activity of chromium in Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys in the temperature range 1300° to 1700°K. This method has been shown to give results which agree with the best vapor pressure measurements. SEVERAL investigations1"5 have been made of chromium activities in Fe-Cr alloys. Most of these have been made by vapor pressure measurements using knudsen cell techniques while one has been made using gas equilibration with H2/H2O gas mixtures. In the present investigation electromotive force measurements have been made on this system using a thoria yttria solid electrolyte. This system was -chosen to establish the technique of measurement at low oxygen potentials, before extending it to Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. The cell used was Pt Cr • Cr2O3 ilThO2 • Y2O3 llalloy • Cr2O3 IPt Since the oxygen pressure of the chromium-chromic oxide mixture lay in the range 10"19 to 1027 atm in the temperature range investigated, thoria yttria electrolytes were used. It was soon found during the investigation that considerable care was required to prepare satisfactory electrolytes and a study was made to find the best method of preparing pellets of TI1O2-Y2O3 solid solution of as near theoretical density as possible. Various compositions in the range 2 to 15 mole pct Y2O3 were studied but the experimental measurements were made with electrolytes containing 4 to 5 pct Y2O3. The method of preparation finally adopted was to use thorium oxalate and yttria as raw materials. The thorium oxalate was decomposed at 900°C for 6 hr to give a reactive powder. This powder was then mixed with the appropriate amount of yttria and ground in an agate mortar for about 4 hr. The powder was moistened with absolute alcohol as a lubricant and pressed in a metal die at a pressure of 7 tons per sq in. The pellets were then heated at 1100°C for 24 hr followed by 24 hr at 1250°C. After this firing cycle the material was reground and repelleted and again fired at 1100° and 1250°C followed by heating for 7 days at 1600°C. It was found in later experiments that a further firing of 4 hr at 2000°C improved the density further and gave pellets of only 2 pct porosity. After firing, the pellets were polished on emery paper and finally with the 2 µ diamond paste. The polishing was followed by a final firing of 24 hr at 1500°C. Investigation showed that this final treatment minimized reaction between the electrolytes and chromium oxide. It was believed that this was because of a lowering of the surface energy of the electrolyte surface. Energy demand is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades - placing even more emphasis on supply, security and environmental impact issues. ? Several countries are taking steps to nationalize their own resources thus safeguarding their supplies and reducing exports of natural resources. ? Understanding the future availability of critical minerals requires a global perspective. It is essential to know where deposits are located, their reserves and resources, the technologies necessary for production, and the costs of producing and transporting the products to consumers. ? As mining companies look to maintain or increase their operating capabilities and increase their mineral resource bases, the search for commodities expands beyond developed terrestrial regions of the world, to include marine resources. (Figure 1) Operating challenges in these locations include finding skilled workers, building infrastructure, improving recovery technologies and practicing sustainable development.

Silat, Siderúrgica Latino-americana, selected Russula as the main engineering contractor for their 700,000 tpy Greenfield steel plant dedicated to long and flat steel production. The project is currently under construction in the district Guararu in Caucaia in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza. The project will be developed in two phases. First phase: 600,000 tons per year rebar mill and 60,000 tpy steel mesh line; Second phase: 700,000 tpy melt shop (90 ton/hr EAF and 4 strand continuous caster for billets up to 180 mm x 180 mm).

When Bridger Coal Company transformed their operations from surface mining to an underground longwall operation their plans included not only the addition of new mining equipment but also surface fans for a blowing (supply) air ventilation system. The original system concept included a propane gas fired air heater to preheat the intake air during cold weather and a dual parallel fan and duct system. One fan operated to ventilate the mine while the other fan was for stand-by emergency operation. Equipment proposals were submitted in March, 2005 based on the dual parallel fan system. Discussions conducted during the equipment selection process revealed that several alternative system design concepts were available. The alternative concepts included innovation features that not only saved space and cost but also reduced operating expense as well. Many of the features were incorporated into the final design of the system. A comparison of the original system concept and final installation design are presented in the paper in addition to details of the features and the derived benefits.

Waterhouse announced that the fall meeting will be devoted to alloy steel. This meeting will be held in Chicago the week of Sept. 22 in connection with the National Metal Congress. He also announced that oxygen in steel will be the central idea of the meeting which will be held in New York next February. The first paper, entitled "Sintering Limonitic Iron Ore at Ironton, Minn.," was presented by Perry G. Harrison (T. P. 284), the author. Sintering was first un¬dertaken in 1024 to treat Cuyuna range iron and manganiferous ores low in silica and high in moisture and containing objectionable qualities of fine... A Dwight-Lloyd machine was first installed. This machine was replaced by a larger one having a width of 72 in. The power cost was decreased from about $11.22 per ton of sinter on a 42-in. machine to about X0.14 for the 72-in. machine. The tons of sinter per man-shift was increased from 11.86 to 16.77. Improvements embodied in the larger plant reduced the cost of sintering to $0.41. The analyses of iron ore and manganiferous ore and the sinter produced from these materials was used to show the increase in value at the mine resulting from sintering. "Steel-making processes generate carbon dioxide air emissions and a slag co-product. The aim of this project was to develop a functional sequestration system using steelmaking slag to permanently capture carbon dioxide emitted in steelmaking offgas. A possible parallel benefit of this process would be rapid chemical stabilization of the slag minerals with reducing swelling or leaching.This paper summarizes the original results of the project, including mineralogical and structural features of carbon sequestration with steel making slag, mathematical modeling of reaction phenomena using a modified shrinking core model, METSIM modeling of several possible industrial applications, a thermo-gravimetrical study of the reaction between slags and different gases, and design and testing for a lab scale apparatus consisted of two reactors.1. IntroductionThe U.S. produces 9-14 Mt of steelmaking slag annually, which represents approximately 10-15 wt. % of crude steel output.1,2 Primary uses for steelmaking slag include high quality mineral aggregate, Portland cement, unconfined fill, soil conditioning, and pH neutralization of abandoned mine drainage.3,4 The key factor prescribing slag use is the alkaline-earth metal (e.g. Ca and Mg) oxides content, which contribute to overall basicity and cementitious strength. However, as-produced steelmaking slag is chemically unstable. Calcium and magnesium oxides readily form hydroxides and carbonates through reaction with atmospheric gases. Both hydroxide and carbonate formation produce substantial mechanical swelling leading to heave failure in confined construction applications, thus many states dictate stockpile aging for 3-6 months prior to commercial use.5,6 Sequestration of carbon dioxide is a natural corollary to forced carbonation. The conversion of CaO/MgO to carbonates serves both to stabilize the slag, and permanently capture and store the CO2."

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Development of Geomechanical Earth Models (GEM) is a prerequisite to reservoir management, involving issues such as stress path analysis, prediction of induced seismicity and sanding initiation, and coupled flow-stress modeling that leads to more realistic predictions of oil rates and rock response. Part of GEM development is the stipulation of the 3-D lithostratigraphic disposition (geometry) which is used to choose the geomechanical units. The digital geological model is then populated with quantitative and semi-quantitative data on rock properties, fluid properties, saturations, initial conditions (p, T, [_]) and other information. Both fluid and solid properties are needed this requires integration of geomechanics skills with geophysical and rock physics skills, and this article deals with a subset of this integration process, with an example from two wells in southwest Iran.Rock physics approaches are used to predict reservoir rock and fluid properties with wellbore and 3-D seismic data, which are also used to interpolate rock mechanics properties to the inter-well regions. The first step in a generic rock physics approach is diagnostic and involves the introduction of a suitable Rock Physics model.Acoustic impedance (AI), shear impedance (SI), and density (_) are the fundamental rock properties usually derived using AVO equations, and these parameters, along with attenuation coefficients, can then be correlated to static rock mechanics properties that define deformability and perhaps even strength. In this study, Poisson Impedance is introduced as a new seismic attribute used for lithology and fluid differentiation in the FahliyanFormation (reservoir rock) in two oil wells in the southwest of Iran. To do this, a novel rock physics model was developed for this naturally fractured carbonate reservoir.Currently, these data are also being used to correlate to a limited rock mechanics data base to develop a more extensive GEM to serve as input to more general geomechanical and reservoir modeling tasks.

In a chromite smelting process for the production of high-carbon ferrochromium, the slag composition profoundly affects operating conditions and the economic performance of the process. For a Canadian chromite concentrate, optimum slag composition and operating temperature were determined by process simulation with a computer model, which is based on parameters, such as the minimisation of slag volume, liquidus temperature, electrical energy consumption and chromium losses. Chromium recoveries are identified for slag compositions spanning wide concentration ranges within the quaternary system MgO-AI2O3- SiO2-CaO. The simulated data are compared with the experimental results.

"AbstractProduction from the Excelsior Reservoir has amounted to approximately one million barrels. This production has caused a 'Pressure •drop of 10 p.s.i. from the original pressure of 1,245 p.s.i.g. Volumetric balance calculations indicate that the pool as being produced by a water drive whose strength is •probably unsurpassed in Western Canada. It has also been shown by 'unsteady state' calculations that the reservoir will still be above the saturation pressure of 915 p.s.i.g. at the time of depletion. The average permeability of the producing formation is approximately 1,000 millidarcys and, consequently, well draw-downs are very low. The field is essentially a bottom-water drive and calculations have shown that gravity drainage will greatly assist the recovery of oil. Water flooding data on several cores •have placed the flushing efficiency at •approximately 50 per cent, which indicates a recoverable oil-in-place of 17.7 million stock tank barrels. Calculations and field data indicate that the MER for the early life of this field is probably as high as 8,000 to 10,000 stock tank barrels per day.IntroductionTHE EXCELSIOR NISKU oil reservoir is located about twenty miles northeast of Edmonton. The field was discovered in November, 1949, by Imperial Excelsior N.o.1 well, in Lsd. 13, Sec. 3, Twp. 56, R. 22, W. 4, at a depth of 3,850 feet.Since discovery, development has continued on a 40~acre spacing pattern. At the end of 1951, drilling over approximately 80 per cent of the estimated productive area of 1,680 acres had established 32 we1ls capable •of production. The field •has been fairly well delineated by dry holes on all but the eastern flank ."

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.

By the micronization-milling of the material, the size and the structure of its particles are changed and it comes to the increasing of the potential energy of the system as well as to the chem-ical activity of the material what is the result of an increased free surface and of the concentration of the grate defects, that is of the internal energy of the system. All these changes that are reached, show that new characteristics of treated materials are got by micronization process. Controlling the process of the micronization and by purpose directing of the new characteristics of the activated materials, we can have the positive effects and use them in more technologies. Talc is important nonmetallic mineral raw material that is widely used as either the basic raw material, or as filler. This has stimulated its technological investigation, as well as the investigation of its physical-chemical characteristics. In this paper are shown experimentally reached results of the physical-chemical characteristics of the talc during the process of the micronization in high energetic mill. In this paper, the optimum conditions of miconization of talc in high-energy-speed rotary mill and its influence micronization on a degree of Fe2O3recovery by hydrometallurgical methodes, are presented. The X-ray analysis of the obtained products showed that high quality talc with low content of can be obtained by these physical-chemical processes In this paper, the principles and application or fine and ultra-fine grinding high-energy attriton mill with small balls, enabling fast, efficient grinding, low energy consumption, short grinding time and easy handling will be described.

ACCEPTED current practice for A the valuation of mineral property is based upon Hoskold's theory and valuation tables first published in 1877, and popularized by Herbert Hoover's "Principles of Mining" issued in 1909. In more recent years the procedure has been developed further in the course of the extensive valuation work required for Federal taxation purposes. The 1-aluation of oil and gas properties and of mines is based upon the same principle-the estimation of the present worth of future net revenues. However, in valuing oil and gas properties the method used for discounting future revenues differs somewhat from that adopted for mines, owing principally to the nature of the re- source. production from oil and gas properties usually declines from year to year, whereas coal and ore de- posits are adapted to a more uniform rate of output.

Microwave (MW) energy has been used widely for several decades for communications, food processing, wood drying, vulcanization of rubber and medical therapy. Recently, this technology was found to be capable of successfully sintering ceramic and metallic powder materials, with the advantages of reducing soaking times and sintering temperatures. Unlike conventional heating, MW radiation works through the absorption of the microwave energy by a material placed in an electromagnetic field within the microwave cavity. A far more efficient heating process is produced due to the unique ability of microwaves in selectively heating a pecific part of the material with desirable dielectrical properties. This exploratory research was initiated with the objective of locally sintering the thermal barrier coating of gas turbine components using MW radiation. This novel technique may allow repairing of the component without subjecting the entire piece to unnecessary elevated temperatures and reduction of process time and cost. Y ttria stabilized zirconia was used in this study and sintering was conducted using a multimodal 1.2 kW microwave facility. Three configurations of heating setup were experimented and the preliminary results will be discussed in this paper.
