During the last decade, a significant amount of research has been conducted by Energy West Mining Company, government agencies, academia, and consulting companies to develop predictive tools for assessing the stability of the Castlegate Sandstone, which is found approximately 250 m above multiple-scam coal reserves, Energy West Mining uses longwall mining techniques in its operations near Huntington, Utah, and these studies were initiated to satisfy requirements for maintaining the stability of the Castlegate Sandstone and resource recovery. In this study, the authors have used multiple-regression analysis techniques and a wealth of data collected over many years on geology, mining, and escarpment stability. The volume of failed rocks is used as the response variable after several other factors were considered, including measurement of surface deformation and frequency of mining-induced surface fractures. Geologic and geometric variables were obtained along 3.7 km of escarpment exposure at 130 study locations. Regression analysis of data for the first 29 study location, which had been fully' undermined, showed that surface topography played a critical rule in influencing escarpment stability. Preliminary regression analysis results from 70 study loca¬tions identified several other important geologic arid mining factors that influence be stability of the sandstone escarpment These are canyon slope, sandstone thickness, and mining influence ante.

The largest deposits of chromite in the United States occur in tabular layers in the lower part of the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Nearly 900,000 long tons of chromite concentrates have been produced from mines and mills in this area, and reserves equivalent to more than 2,500,000 long tons of Cr2O3 remain in the ground. Layered concentrations of chromite (known as chromitite zones) occur only within olivine-rich layers of the Peridotite member of the Ultramafic zone of the Stillwater. As many as thirteen chromitite zones, lying conformably one above another, have been found, but only five of them are thick enough to be of any conceivable economic interest, and only two of them have been mined to date. Individual chromitite zones can be recognized by their distinctive internal character and by their stratigraphic position in the Peridotite member. The chemical composition of chromite varies consistently between and within the different chromitite zones. The zones range in thickness from about an inch to more than 12 feet, and the Cr2O3, content of their chromite ranges from 36.6 to 49.2 weight per cent. In any given area, the G chromitite zone is the thickest, but the chromite of the H chromitite zone has the highest grade. Laterally, the thickness of the chromitite zones is related to the thickness of the Peridotite member; in general all are thicker in the eastern part of the Stillwater than in the western part.

This paper makes five major points which may be contributions to the art of limestone sinkhole engineering. First, solution cavity development in limestones is dependent in great measure on pyrite contained within the limestone. Second, rock failure is rarely involved in sinkhole problems, while soil failures are almost always the mode of occurrence. Third, draw down, depression of the water table, is a primary causative factor in sinkhole development. Fourth, lateral movement of vadose water along the soil-rock interface, sub-soil erosion, is the mechanism by which soil is stoped, raveled, piped, or removed from the soil cavern. Fifth, the ultimate or triggering factor in localizing a sinkhole collapse is any superposed mechanism which disrupts the continuity of an impermeable clay soil overburden. The above theses are presented as extensions of our observation and of published literature, with the suggestion that additional study of these mechanisms is warranted.

"The iron ores of the Kiruna Mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality but for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998 LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF Analysers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Kiruna Mine of LKAB, Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In the early nineties LKAB decided to develop the Kiruna orebody further down from the 775m main level to a new main level at 1045m. This development programme was realised while in the mineral processing section and in the pellet plant further capacity was added (Wyllie 1996).In addition to deepening of the mine, which opened up 330 million tonnes of ore, the exploitation of the so-called lake ore was included in the future planning, adding another 1 15 million tonnes of mineable ore. At an annual production of approximately 20 million tonnes of ore the Kiruna Mine today looks at a developed ore reserve sufficient for the next 20 years.All of the competitors’ ores traded in the world market are from open pit operations. LKAB compensates for the obvious disadvantages by continuous efforts to make the best possible use of her high quality magnetite ore deposit. This objective is realised by combined efforts in the pellet plant, the mineral processing plant and the mine. Propriety processes, latest big scale equipment and high tech solutions for automation lead to high quality sales products at a reasonable cost."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. By now, the concept of remotely controlling heavy equipment in underground mines has become commonplace. Personnel safety is the biggest justifier for remote control, followed by an inherent cost saving (in certain cases) when wireless video is added to the mix. There are a handful of vendors targeting this need, and for years the mines have remained loyal to their brand. But as the number of remote-control related accidents and maintenance costs increase it forces our industry to take another look at this commonplace concept. And as the blinders are taken off, the mines are getting the revelation that not all remote control systems were created equally. This paper highlights the differences between various remote control systems, and then moves into an in-depth look at HARD-LINE?s package which drastically cuts maintenance costs, and also provides a solid investment toward full Tele-operation.

Quality Assurance has become a buzzword amongst governments and industry. Notwithstanding the world class work done by its committees in developing codes of ethics and of practice in field geological handbooks, mining cost estimation handbooks, and reserve estimation, the AusIMM could better prepare its membership for QA. MICA could provide a simple set of guidelines to enable consultant members to develop their own QA procedures manual conforming to AusIMM Codes and to IS09003, and AS3903.

In 1976, The Bureau of Mines developed a prototype system to sense and extinguish fires in shafts and shaft stations in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Subsequent work modified this technology to include fueling areas, spontaneous combustion zones and coal mines. This paper updates IC-8783 "In-mine Fire Tests of Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection Systems," which was published in 1978 and summarized the design and in-mine, actual fire testing of the first prototype mine shaft fire and smoke protection system. This paper also updates related work from IC-8775 "Spontaneous Oxidation and Combustion of Sulfide Ores in Underground Mines," (also published in 1978) and IC-8808 "In-mine Evaluation of Under- ground Fire and Smoke Detectors," (published in early 1979).

There are no identified mineral resources in the Italian Peak RARE II areas, and there are no producing or developing mines within or adjacent to the study area. Several prospects are in RARE II area M-4945, Idaho, but none were found in the area I-1945, Montana. The Viola Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) vicinity and the Heart Mountain vicinity along the west and south borders, respectively, are being prospected. There has been no recorded production from mines within the study area, but between $2.5 million and $5.0 million worth of lead, silver, and zinc were produced in the adjacent Birch Creek district - dominantly from the Viola Mine - from 1882 to 1889 (Anderson and Wagner, 1944, p. 14). The Viola and other mines in that district are possibly, on basin-margin, carbonate-hosted, lead-silver-zinc deposits stratabound within the Devonian Jefferson Formation. Previous studies have considered them to be hydrothermal, replacement orebodies. Mineral occurrences in the Heart Mountain area are possibly black-shale hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Mississippian-Devonian McGowan Creek Formation or perhaps the underlying Devonian Three Forks Formation. The Jefferson and McGowan Creek Formations underlie many scattered segments of the study area. The deposits and occurrence; are not sufficiently exposed to determine tonnage and grade, but sampling indicated moderate resource potential at two properties just outside the study area, the Viola Mine and the Elkhorn Group (fig. 1, no. 33). Local residents indicated there are several thousand tons of zinc-bearing resource; at the Viola line. A 23-ft (70-m) drill hole intercept near Heart Mountain et the Elkhorn Group adjacent to the stuny area contained 0.15 percent uranium oxide

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 492 samples of crude petroleum from 470 United States oilfields, each of which produced 2,500 barrels a day or more during at least 1 of the years 1946-56. The fields are listed alphabetically by State and field names in table 1, with information on the geographical and geological sources of the samples. Table 2 summarizes the general characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses. A previous report 4 contains similar analyses of 283 important United States oilfields; some of them are repeated in this report. Many fields for which analyses previously were published are represented by new analyses, which include data not previously reported. Refractive index nu and specific dispersion, ng minus nD divided by the density, for some of the distillate fractions are included in the analyses of 316 of the crude-oil samples. This is the first Bureau of Mines report on analysis of crude oils to contain such data, and their use in calculating hydrocarbon-type composition of the fractions is explained.

Previous fundamental research projects have indicated the value of continuous closure measurements in deep tabular excavations for improved support design, hazard assessment and for quantifying the effect of seismicity on stope closure. This paper describes further measurements in a VCR stope to validate some of the earlier findings. Calculation of the closure ratio showed that it is a good measure to identify different ground conditions and possible hazards. This work was supported by numerical modelling results, which showed that the closure ratio is very useful in discriminating the response of different geotechnical environments. Des projets précédents de recherche fondamentale ont démontré la valeur de mesures continues de fermeture dans le cas de profondes excavations tabulaires pour une conception améliorée du soutien, de l’évaluation du danger et pour quantifier l’effet de la séismicité sur l'affaissement du toit d’un chantier d’abattage. Le présent document décrit d’autres mesures dans un chantier d’abattage VCR afin de valider certaines des conclusions précédemment formulées. Le calcul du degré d'affaissement montre qu’il y va de soi d’identifier différentes conditions de sol ainsi que les dangers possibles. Les présents travaux ont été confirmés par des résultats de modélisation numérique, lesquels ont démontré que le taux d'affaissement est très utile quant à discerner la réponse dans des environnements géotechniques différents. Dass errechnete Konvergenzverhaltniss erweiste sich als eine gute Massnahme zur bestimmung von geotechnischen Zonen und moglichen Risiken. Numerische Analyse unterstutzte die vorliegende Arbeit und deutete darauf, dass das Konvergenzverhaltniss sehr brauchbar ist um Verhaltensunterschiede der geotechnischen Zonen zu erproben

"In the last decades heuristic approaches based on logic rules have been one favored tool to control flotation units and plants on top of distributed control systems. Fundamental knowledge on flotation processes, expressed in reliable models, and programs to assure the quality of the information, contained in available measurements, are still insufficient to develop robust predictive control strategies. In this paper the idea of using simplified models, when a known disturbance is coming into the process, is explored. As a first approach, the set points of the froth depth and air flow rate controllers are estimated based on this model. Since these target predictions are only approximate, a conventional feedback expert system, based on logic rules, continues the task of calculating the set points of the distributed controllers, in order to decrease the gap between actual and desirable metallurgical targets. This combined actions permitted a fast response of the process to change the operation of the circuit when a measured disturbance is detected. This control system was implemented and experimentally evaluated in a pilot rougher flotation circuit, with three pneumatic cells, with froth depth and air flow rate controllers in each cell. Since the circuit is operated for the air-water system, a phenomenological model, with parameters estimated from industrial data, is fed on-line with real operating variables and virtual values, characterizing the feed (grades, solids%, particle size distribution), in order to predict the metallurgical targets (recovery and concentrate grade). Several cases are discussed showing the benefits of this control system and the possible improvements to work on. INTRODUCTIONToday, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design."

This paper describes a series of experiments leading to the development of a method for leaching the mixed ores of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., containing chalcocite and silicates of copper, by the use of solutions acidified with sulfuric acid and carrying ferric sulfate. Iron is added to the solutions and ferric iron is regenerated electrolytically to a percentage high enough to act as an effcient solvent. The decreased yield is partly compensated for by a higher current density. An important problem in modern copper metallurgy, particularly in the Southwest, has been to obtain good recoveries from what are commonly known as mixed ores; that is ores in which the copper occurs partly as oxide and partly as sulfide compounds. The dividing line between mixed ores and ores commonly accepted as concentrating is not definite. In other words, much ore now being concentrated carries considerable copper in non-sulfide form, on which recoveries are not so good as on ores carrying less of these constituents. While treatment by concentration may be commercially profitable on ores carrying oxide copper within certain limits, there are large deposits for which the application of concentration could not be considered, and yet which have not been considered amenable to leaching because they carried too much sulfide. The Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. has large amounts of such mixed ores, and this paper is an account of the experimental work by which a method was developed for their treatment, and for which a large plant is now being erected by the Inspiration Co. It is not claimed that the method is a general solution of the problem of mixed-ore treatment but it is apparently well adapted for leaching the ores of the Inspiration Co., for which it was designed. The work done has covered preliminary laboratory and test-plant investigation, and a pilot-plant run, extending from March to the middle of December, 1923. Thoroughly consistent and satisfactory results were obtained continuously for more than six months in the pilot plant; and it is believed that the results and probable costs that can be had on a large scale have been definitely proved. The method, however, was designed for local conditions; and while the basic principles are general, there are ores on which it will not work and other ores for which considerable modification may be required.

During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950's. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard- recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

Currently there is a constant and essential concern of preserving nature. Over the years the concern with the environment is increasing, new environmental laws are emerging and being applied more rigorously and consequently emerge economic needs and mineral processing practices and other materials. In this sense briquetting becomes an alternative to fine particles agglomeration by means of pressure and or temperature, with the aid or not of a binder, which allows to get a product not only compressed, which presents shape, size, and adequate mechanical properties. The reduction in volume of the material in some cases (beyond the technological benefits) also allows fine materials can be transported and stored more economically, safely and effectively. The production of coke is greater as the content of better coking coal is, thus he low capacity coking coal is not much used in coke ovens. This research aims to demonstrate that briquetting of mineral coals with low coking coal capacity is possible, additionally allows increased coke production, obtaining then a better yield of coke. Basically they take advantage of low price of no coking coals without changing the quality of the coke produced. Anyway, briquetting became a smart alternative to aggregate values, economy and care for the environment.

Mine seismicity is one of the most difficult geotechnical risks to manage in seismically active mines. There are currently some established empirical and statistical methods that provide quantitative measures for seismic hazard assessment in operating mines. However, these methods are mostly suitable for quantifying the current or historical seismic hazard and often cannot be directly used to forecast the future hazards. Numerical modelling is the only analytical tool that can capture the level of complexities required for a meaningful analysis of mine seismicity and therefore to facilitate a reliable forecast of future hazards. However, there is currently no widely accepted and established guideline and methodology for analysing and forecasting mine seismicity using numerical modelling. This paper first provides a background on previous published studies on this subject and then outlines the key aspects that can affect the reliability of the forecasting for mine seismicity. These aspects include a) processing of historical seismic data, b) selection of suitable numerical modelling approach, c) Post-processing and interpretation of the model outputs. A case study is then presented for the Gwalia Deeps Mine where a new framework was developed to forecast future mine seismicity. High-quality seismic data for a period of five years was used for back-analysis and comparisons with the numerical modelling outputs. After development of the method, the future seismicity was forecast for the next 12 months and the actual seismicity was monitored against the forecast during this period. Results of this study shows promising potential for the proposed framework to be applied more routinely and at other mine sites. However, more validations are required at Gwalia Deeps mine as the mine proceeds to deeper levels. In addition, the method needs more improvements and should be tested and validated at other mining operations before it can be established as a proven method. Heterotrophic microorganisms Pseudomonas aureofaciens, microscopic fungi Fusarium sp. and their combinations with some chemical substances were used for gold leaching from refractory ore and flotation concentrateof Akbakaj deposit. All biological additives raised the speed of noble metals dissolution. The best results of gold extraction from ore were in the presence of bacteria or their associations with other solvents and from flotation concentrate in the presence of fungus - 30 % of additional amount of gold. The maximum extraction of gold speed value was during the first 8 hours of process. The electronic-microscopic researches of the ore samples showed almost complete decay of pyrite and arsenopyrite under bacteria influence whereas at chemical leaching most of these minerals stayed uncrushed. The presence of microscopic fungi in flotation concentrate during leaching provided full distraction of pyrite, but some crystals of antimony and arsenopyrite were undestroyed. During cyanide leaching of flotation concentrate there were accumulation of antimony and incomplete pyrite decomposition. Keywords: gold bioleaching, bacteria, fungi, complex solution

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in opencut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints, such as spoil heaps and rivers. Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near-horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only.

UNTIL about 1930, the universal practice of horizontal-retort zinc smelters in the United States, as far as the writers are aware, was to operate the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle; that is, the retorts were charged in the early morning of one day, and in the early morning of the following day the residues were cleaned out, the retorts recharged, and a new cycle started. During the business depression of the early thirties, zinc production fell off to the extent that zinc smelters had idle retort capacity. Rather than continue to run some of the retort furnaces on a 24-hr cycle and shut down the remainder, a few companies decided to try out a longer cycle. Although the output of zinc per retort per day is lower, the longer cycle permits a larger charge per retort and improved zinc recovery. Advantages of the longer cycle were soon evident, and the practice spread rapidly. Various lengths of cycle were used, typical examples being 28-hr, 32-hr, 36-hr, and 48-hr. The 48-hr cycle fits in best with the standard routine of smelter practice that was built up on the basis of the 24-hr cycle; that is, the retort furnace "maneuver" always comes at the same time of day, and can be performed in the cool hours of the early morning. Under some conditions, particularly in some of the older plants, where the retorts are smaller than in newer plants, a 48-hr cycle is longer than necessary, and some intermediate length of cycle may theoretically be most economical. Use of an intermediate cycle, however, means that the maneuver comes at different times on consecutive days, and that sometimes it comes during the hottest part of the day. The work on the retort furnaces is extremely hot and arduous at best, and it is much worse, of course, if it is done during the heat of a summer day. When labor was plentiful and tractable, many plants were able to operate on cycles of intermediate length, but the workmen did not like the working hours. Under present labor conditions, it is hardly practicable to operate with a cycle of intermediate length, so the choice has narrowed down to the alternatives of 24-hr or 48-hr cycles. In any discussion of economics, too comprehensive generalization is not warranted, because local conditions affecting economics vary greatly. The best economic practice at one plant at any given time may be uneconomical at another plant, or even at the same plant at another time.
