Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

El origen del sostenimiento con pernos para roca se remonta al inicio de la década del 70, donde el uso inicial fue a través de varillas "L"de diámetro de ranura a un extremo introducido a una cuña. El requisito para el desempeño del perno fue contar con un hueco de perforación a la medida y una roca competente para este fin. Posteirormente se realizaron otras pruebas para determinar la capacidad de anclaje de la roca encajonante como de las vetas de l/8" de diámetro con "mariposas" a un extremo como medio de anclamiento. En este sentido, el texto señala que el uso de tubos para el yacimiento de Quiruvilca es favorable, en comparación a los pernos, puesto que mejora el rendimiento y seguridad de la mina, aunque su adquisición sea costosa. Mientras que desde la perspectiva de la mecánica de rocas, el método de reforzamiento es el más efectivo ya que actúa contra la totalidad de la superficie del hueco.

This paper is concerned with a study on the floor heaving in the transport road of the GLI Omerler Colliery in Tuncbilek-Turkey. This gallery has been opened at the depth of 200 m through the formation of marl in 4.6 m width and 3.5 m height in cross section. Floor heaving occurred up to 70 cm in height in maximum and caused severe problems in railway and band-conveyor transportation in the main road. In addition; after the current panel mined out, the shield support units could not be transferred to the new panel because of the deformation of roadway cross-section. The I-profile steel arch supports also sank into the weak floor rock. This situation has been studied by numerical analysis using the FLAC3Dfinite difference program in order to investigate the rock mass behaviour around the opening. The obtained outputs of the numerical model have showed consistency with the amount of floor heaving in the gallery at 200 m depth. A new gallery has been driven at the depth of 115 m and M4 longwall panel has just been taken to production. So as not to encounter with the same problems at 200 m depth, especially longwall face moving problem, various numerical models have been studied in order to keep the floor heaving in the acceptable limits required to move shield support units. Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

"A laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the applicability of a radium selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The results of this work showed the ion exchange complexer, Dowex XFS 43230.00, to be efficient in removing radium from contaminated water of uranium mining operations with the ultimate loading capacity of the resin on one type of water treated being determined as approximately 1,600 Bq/cm3 of new resin. Although this resin has potential application for treatment of effluent streams in uranium operations it has been identified that the resin efficiency and capacity is directly related to the chemistry of the water being treated and site-specific testwork is required in order to establish reliable design data for full-scale operations.IntroductionThe possible applicability of a radium-selective ion exchange complexer for removing radium from Canadian uranium mining effluents had been identified and discussed as a possible alternative to present radium removal methods during a review of disposal technology options for the National Uranium Tailings Program of the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources(1). Work by other workers(2.3) had shown the complexer to be very efficient in removing radium from contaminated water. Also, plant trials on contaminated minewater at the Mt. Taylor uranium mine in New Mexico is reported to have shown the resin complexer to be efficient under plant operating conditions.As a result, a laboratory test program was initiated by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as part of the National Uranium Tailings Program to investigate the suitability of this resin for Canadian uranium mining effluents. The test program was carried out by Melis Consulting Engineers Ltd. (MCEL) under contract to the Department of Supply and Services using the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) facilities located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."

The Bureau of Mines has been researching remote sensing analysis of an underground coal mining area in Utah and computer-aided methods of defining ground control hazards in this mining area. As a result of these studies, a preliminary potential hazards map was developed for the test site. This map is based primarily upon a lineament (linear feature) analysis of Landsat satellite data. Other data used were paleochannel location data, resistivity data, and information from surface and underground field checking of the lineaments and ground control problems in the mine. Lineaments proved to be reliable indicators of hazardous areas, although the type and degree of hazard varies with different lineament trends and the presence of other conditions such as lineament intersections and intersections with other geologic structures or with paleochannels. Lineaments were observed to match faults, joints, and/or joint trends in the area. The paleochannel data, derived from drill hole data, provided basic information about potentially hazardous areas in the mine by suggesting where paleochannels could cause instability in the roof rock. The ground control problem data served largely to define the relative degree of hazard associated with lineaments and the types of hazards encountered in the mine. Resistivity data helped confirm the presence of fractures where they were expected to occur both from surface geology and from the lineament data.

This report presents the results of laboratory mineral-dressing investigations by the Bureau of Mines of 14 individual or composite character samples from deposits in the Batesville manganese district. It will be noted that some concentrates have met or approached analytical specifications for metallurgical manganese ore although great variations in both physical and chemical composition from once deposit to another make each a new problem. In most cases it is evident that a substantial loss of manganese has occurred in the various slime and tailing products. An important aspect of this work is the research being conducted on manganese-bearing limestones. Recent reconnaissance indicates that this resource constitutes one of the major domestic reserves of manganese. Laboratory study has shown that ferrograde concentrates can be recovered from samples of manganese-bearing limestones from two properties. Research on samples from other areas is still underway.

"Microseismic monitoring technology has become one of the most effective method of mine ground pressure monitoring after decades of development. But safety assessment of mine ground pressure by using microseismic monitoring is still in the development stage, it needs to be perfected continuously in practice, and choose the optimal assessment indexes and methods. The definitions and physical meanings of wave velocity, b value, and EI-VA value are introduced in this paper. Statistical calculation of the microseismic events in Luomu Mine is finished by using these indexes, then the functions and calculation results of V, b value, and EI-VA value with the variable of time are also given in the paper. The preliminary safety assessment method is established in Luomu Mine, and it has achieved good results in practical application.1.1 Engineering background The Luomu Mine is a super large molybdenum and tungsten production base in China, ore reserves is up to 2 billion tons, first in Asia and third in the world. It begins mining since the 1960. and bases on underground mining until 2002. In order to recover resources more effectively, it began to use opencast mining method and formed a production of 30000t/d in the early 1990. After about 30 years of underground mining, a large mined out spaces was formed under open pit mine, up to area of 1.2 million m2 and volume of 18 million m3, as shown in figure 1. The large number of mined out spaces seriously affects the normal production, mining and handling of mined out spaces are in the high risk. In the past years, several rock mass collapsions happened, and it caused a serious security threat to persons and equipments. According to the distribution characteristics of mined out spaces, Luomu Mine is divided into A, B, C, D and E mining area. The stability of D mining area is studied in this article. D mining area mainly includes 1376,1350,1340,1317 mined out spaces and 1280 deep large mined out area, as shown in figure 2. The mined out spaces of D mining area is extremely complex and high-risk. Therefore, a microseismic monitoring system was built to monitor the stability of D mining area, a large number of valuable datum has been obtained, and it has a striking effect (Cheng & Peng, 2013; Peng et al., 2013)."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued study of the Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co. Inc. through a CDC contract and currently being commercialized by Thermo Fisher Scientific. This report examines the effect of oversize particles, cyclone inversion, and cleaning procedures. Clean and exposed filters were examined using light microscopy and particulates counted before and after various instrument manipulations. The data presented show that the dry cleaning procedures do not cause significant (greater than limit of detection) sample contamination by respirable or oversize particulates and that the cyclone is resistant to particulate carry over during inversion.

The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. Coal dust and float coal dust, produced during normal mining operations, in underground coal mines, are carried from the point of origin downstream by the ventilating air, where it deposits on the surfaces of the mine entry. In an explosion, this dust is lifted from the surfaces by the aerodynamic disturbances and, if of sufficient quantity, can continue to propagate the explosion. To prevent the surface coal dust from contributing, it must be inerted, typically by spreading pulverized limestone, i.e., rock dust, over the coal dust surface. To facilitate the dusting operation, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory(PRL), developed an automated system that continuously monitors the accumulation of coal dust. This system could activate a rock-dusting machine that disperses rock dust into the ventilation air when dangerous deposits accumulate and deactivate the machine when sufficient inert has been deposited on top of the coal dust. The system consists of a microprocessor-controlled optical float dust deposition meter. This device measures the light intensity reflected from a deposited layer of dust. A standard cap lamp is used as a fixed-position light source. From the reflected light signal, the microprocessor determines the hazard level of the deposited layer and performs the appropriate action. Full-scale studies conducted in the Experimental Mine at PRL's Lake Lynn Laboratory, using alternating thin layers of rock dust and coal dust, successfully demonstrated the operation of the device. Based on the statistical data from these studies, a mathematical model was developed to predict long-term error in total rock dust content using this inerting procedure. Downwind dust dispersion was also examined to provide optimum placement of the dust sensors and to determine the need for better rock dust dispersion techniques.

(1) A great deal of experimentation has been carried out by the Wet Process Cement Manufacturers in connection with additives which make possible the production of a pumpable slurry at reduced moisture contents. We ourselves have made dozens of tests both at Laramie, Wyoming and Monolith, California. (2) The viscosity or pumpability of a slurry at a definite moisture content and fineness seems to depend on two basic phenomena. One is the physical structure of the raw material itself, which on fine grinding may or may not be excessively hydrophilic (water adsorptive). Usually crystaline or glassy raw materials are non- hydrophilic. The fine grained amorphous raw materials such as shales and clayey limestones very frequently are, however. (3) The second basic phenomenon affecting the hydrophilic tendencies of the raw material is the presence of certain soluble salts, especially gypsum and small amounts of alkalin carbonates or oxides. (4) Various soaps, and phosphates can be used to produce a pumpable slurry of low moisture content when using hydrophilic raw materials as well as can other proprietary materials such as certain long chain carbon compounds. Too frequently however, the price of such additives in conjunction with the amount required prohibits their use in the cement industry.

The objectives of this investigation were to determine the strain propagation laws for a strain pulse in salt and to compare the seismic effects from the detonation of different explosives in salt. The investigation showed that a strain propagation law of the type, e = K(R/W 1/3 ) n, and a strain energy propagation law of the type, Ea/W 1/3 = K(R/WI/3)b , are valid in salt. A change in the regression law coefficient, n , was noted with strain level. A similar change in b was inferred because strain energy is proportional to the square of strain amplitude. Particle velocity data may be used interchangeably with strain data under the test conditions.

O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em apresentar o modelo de monitoramento destes fornecedores nos quesitos performance de Entrega, performance de Qualidade e arquivamento das documentações legais. A Diretoria de Suprimentos atua de forma corporativa em 12 sites, e semestralmente gera relatórios para realizar este monitoramento e essa documentação gerada era arquivada em diversas pastas (em papel) em um único site, o que dificultava a consulta de funcionários que estivessem em outro site nos momentos de auditoria. 0 novo modelo contempla a ferramenta utilizando o próprio ERP, SAP/R3 que possibilita a consulta da documentação necessária, do fomecedor que desejar, de qualquer site, a qualquer momento. Essa ferramenta tem como objetivo agilizar a chegada de informação para quem precisar, em tempo real.

The large proportion of gangue minerals present in platinum bearing ores in South Africa provides challenges to the flotation and downstream processes. In order to take effective measures to reduce their recovery in flotation, an understanding of the mechanisms and factors influencing their behaviour is needed. Typical gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar, quartz, chromite and talc. Of these, talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral and although it is present in relatively small quantities, it has a disproportionate effect as it has a strong froth stabilizing effect, increasing the recovery of other gangue minerals by entrainment. Talc recovery is effectively reduced with the addition of polymeric depressants. Although the other gangue minerals are assumed to be hydrophilic and their recovery by entrainment is expected to follow the water recovery, there is some evidence that they may be activated by the typical reagent suites used. Reagents such as copper sulphate, added as an activator, and collectors are used to selectively induce hydrophobicity on the sulphides. It has been shown that some of these gangue minerals can be activated. This research work investigates whether inadvertent copper activation is mineral specific and evaluates the mechanisms and factors affecting the reversal of activation with the addition of the depressants using electrokinetic measurements, adsorption and microflotation tests. Results are presented that show that the selected minerals do respond differently and that the reversal of activation is dependent on mineral type, depressant type, dosage and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

Diesel fuel is being used in greater volume than ever before in the United States. During 1950 railroads used 43 percent of the total volume of Diesel fuel sold, smelters, mines, and manufacturing plants used about 13 percent, highway vehicles such as trucks and busses, and equipment such as tractors and bulldozers accounted for approximately 20 percent, about 12 percent was used by water craft, and the remaining 12 percent by gas and electric utilities, the military forces, and oil companies. These figures were calculated from data issued by the Bureau of Mines. 2/ Comparable figures for 1951 and for 1952 to date are not available, but recent information indicates that well over 11,000,000 barrels of Diesel fuel per month are produced by the country's refineries. 3/ More information on this increasingly important type of engine fuel is needed by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers, particularly on the grades and qualities of the Diesel fuels being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuel oil produced in refineries in this country.

Brownfield project portfolios are notoriously hard to manage. Day to day there is a constant stream of changes and challenges within projects and across the whole program. When the budget year is over, we?re often left wondering: did the facilities get what they really needed? Did we get value for the capital that was spent? Did we get all the project control and process improvement that we paid for? Great work has been done over the years by the Project Management Institute, Construction Industry Institute and Independent Project Analysis to identify what leads to project success, develop project delivery systems and equip project leaders to perform better. But is attention to individual projects all we need when the job is to deliver a portfolio of many projects? Let?s work with an analogy for a moment, and say a project is like a car, and a project manager the driver. Why can?t all the projects in the portfolio get home in time for dinner? The answer, of course, is that the commute home is about traffic, not just about cars. The road, the signals and the actions of other drivers affect us in our individual cars. Optimizing traffic flow is not about managing individual cars, it is about creating the conditions that allow all traffic to move as smoothly as possible. When we?re stuck in traffic, it doesn?t really matter that we are skilled drivers who know our exact location and our engine?s vital signs. Success with a brownfield portfolio requires more than the equivalent of driver training and a good GPS in every vehicle. Managing the annual budget requires more than tight management of each project. This is not a suggestion to abandon project management in the brownfield multi-projects world; the idea is to find and apply the right tools for delivering a portfolio. Remember, we want confidence in 3 areas: 1. that the facility is getting what it really needs, when it needs it 2. that we are getting value for money invested in facility modifications and improvements, and 3. that our controls are adding value by guiding our improvement What are those portfolio tools? The job they have to do is distinct from project-level thinking: ? Create a clear and balanced business pull for project ideas ? Maintain a respectable plan for fiscal, resource and business control ? Organize the work into a steady flow ? Manage the nature and timing of value-driven project substitutions and priority changes ? Focus on overall business value added and best use of resources ? Repurpose the projects organization into being the way the facility gets improved

Dado que el trabajo se encuentra en desarrollo, los resultados preliminares de la caracterización legal, social y ambiental muestran los primeros pasos para poder identificar los predios disponibles en donde se buscará implementar SBN.

Following considerable experience with the beneficiation of Wabana iron ore by standard methods, a study was made of the benefits to be obtained by semi-reduction. The basis of the laboratory program was an extensive mineralogical and liberation investigation which guided subsequent work. Partial reduction and beneficiation on a laboratory scale was carried out on lump ore and fines. The reduced ore was magnetically concentrated and the concentrated fines were briquetted. Data are presented on reducibility, sizing vs reduction rate, magnetic cobbing and separation, and the elimination of phosphorus. Past work is reviewed briefly and comments are made on the relation of laboratory to pilot-scale tests.
