In order to better understand the tribological behavior of self-lubricating materials, Fe-Si-C matrix composites containing solid lubricants added during the mixing step were studied. The samples were produced by conventional powder metallurgy route, presenting total contents of 5%, 7.5% and 10% in volume of h-BN and graphite mixtures as solid lubricants. The composites were evaluated in terms of tribological properties, under reciprocating sliding conditions, and mechanical properties by using tensile tests. Additionally, the wear scars were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy. Higher total contents of solid lubricants greatly increased scuffing resistance however decreased mechanical properties. Furthermore, increasing h-BN contents reduces both properties. These results confirmed the applicability of such sintered composites as self-lubricating parts, reaching values up to 7000 N.m for scuffing resistance combined with ultimate tensile strength of 220 MPa.

"Mining companies have started using quantitative tools, including computer models of community interaction, to gain intelligence on social risks surrounding their projects. Models of changes in community preferences regarding mining projects over time are useful for evaluating changes in project risk due to changes in the social license to operate. For example, agent-based models that use information diffusion models and social networks are useful for studying those changes due to information diffusion. However, such agent-based models are sensitive to many input parameters including the parameters of the diffusion model and the average degree of the social network. This work evaluates the sensitivity of such a model to diffusion and network model parameters (probability of imitation, probability of innovation, and average degree) using the first order and total sensitivity indices. The results show that the model is much more sensitive to the probability of imitation than the other two parameters. Thus, to reduce uncertainty surrounding the model’s predictions of community acceptance of mining, mines need to obtain accurate estimates of the probability of imitation. AGENT-BASED MODEL OF COMMUNITY ACCEPTANCE A few researchers have started using agent-based models to study mining systems (Fujiono 2011; Nakagawa et al. 2013; Bahr 2015; Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b). Nakagawa and co-workers used ABM to evaluate dynamics of a mining project’s stakeholder networks whereas Fujiono used ABM to study innovation diffusion in the mining industry. Our previous work has presented models and a framework for modeling information diffusion in a mining community and its impact on level of acceptance (a measure of SLO) of the mining project (Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b)."

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). Mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (Escamilla, 2024). The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira and McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. The sustainable development goals (SDGs), also known as the global goals, could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (United Nations Development Programme, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge that requires collaborative efforts (Singh and Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This article proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive mining for sustainable development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the UN’s SDGs, primar)ily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations and advance toward achieving the UN’s SDGs, establishing the company as a global change agent.

The optimization of metallurgical processes requires knowledge of the heterogeneity carried by constituents of interest. The common scenario, almost an industry standard, is to rely on the engineering firm who in turn relies on favorite manufacturers of sampling equipment to provide the appropriate sampling systems in the plant to perform accurate metallurgical accounting. This sequence is flawed from the beginning to the end because everything should be based on a careful understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS) by the company project team and their expert who invariably would suggest various approaches and different sampling systems.The necessary progressive and iterative approach should be that the company’s project team (mining or other industries) would do its home work to have a good understanding of the geometallurgy, mineralogy and texture of the ore in each geological unit so consultants and engineers would have the best information to start with. Then a reputable sampling expert would recommend which sampling systems are needed, so the company would require engineering firms to follow pre-established, non-negotiable requirements, and finally select the sampling equipment existing on the market today that is most likely to lead to accurate and precise enough metallurgical accounting.It is the author’s experience that when this necessary progressive and iterative approach is bypassed, sampling systems installed in the plant are likely to transgress the most elementary rules of sampling correctness. Invariably the argument is that the company cannot afford correct sampling systems for metallurgical accounting as suggested in the Theory of Sampling. There is nothing that is farther from the truth when later problems will develop and inevitable reconciliation difficulties with miners and geologists become daily routine with impossible answers; as a last resource the sampling expert may be called to perform a post-mortem analysis.The progressive and iterative approach suggested in this paper should be a due diligence requirement for any bank providing a loan for an important new mining project; anything less is most likely to generate unpleasant financial losses; historical, well-known examples are referred to.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2015. In an attempt to explain the phenomena of lead entrainment during Cu drossing of lead bullion, two different synthetic lead bullions were heated to 1050°C, cooled slowly to various temperatures, and then quenched. The morphology and composition of dross particles that form when Mn is used to desulphurize bullion also were examined. Polished sections of these pyrometallurgical products were examined by process mineralogical techniques to identify the impurity phases, determine their chemical compositions, examine the morphology of the impurity phases and evaluate the potential for lead entrainment in such crystals, and characterize pre-quench and quench-generated phases. The phases crystallized were metallic lead, metallic copper, galena, chalcocite, albandite, Cu14.4Pb2S9. and 5.5Pb2S3.5. Metallic copper formed isometric skeletal crystals, chalcocite formed platy and skeletal crystals, and 1formed crystals and eutectic intergrowth with chalcocite and Cu14.4Pb2S9 or Cu5.5Ph2S3.5. The pre-quench crystals are larger and usually exhibit skeletal forms; the quench-generated phases are only a few micrometers across and disseminated throughout the lead matrix. Skeletal crystals of metallic copper and chalcocite form three dimensional networks that entrain large amounts of metallic lead.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

In the metal casting industry an improvement of component quality mainly depends on better control over the production parameters. Thus, thermal analysis cooling curve of the alloy is used for process control in aluminum casting industry. Cooling rates of the alloy during solidification process affect microstructure, grain size, eutectic silicon morphology, and dendrite arm spacing (DAS). In this research, effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and solidification parameters of 319 aluminum alloy that is a widely used alloy in automotive industry, has been investigated by means of thermal analysis. Seven different cooling rates have been obtained by using CO2-bonded silica sand molds with two different wall thicknesses, hot-work tool steel molds (H13) with and without coating, thin-wall steel molds with different coatings. In each case, cooling curve and first derivative cooling curve have been plotted by use of very accurate thermal analysis equipment. Effect of different cooling rates on solidification parameters e.g. Nucleation temperature (TN,a), nucleation undercooling (ATN,a), recalescence temperature (TR,a), solidification range (AT,s), and total solidification time (t 0 have been studied in the liquidus region. Microstructural evaluation has been carried out and DAS were measured in all solidification conditions. A numerical equation was proposed to predict cooling rates via measuring DAS in 319 aluminum alloy. Nucleation process and the effect of cooling rate have been interpreted by using thermal analysis cooling curves and microstructural study.

The fair market value of an exploration property is determined by its potential to host a mineral deposit. This potential is gauged by the results of previous exploration, exploration stage, meaningful past expenditures and remaining targets that are not yet tested. Values of exploration properties can be viewed as distinct points in a three-dimensional space defined by orthogonal axes, namely: Exploration Stage (x-axis); Cumulative Expenditures (y-axis); and Property Value (z-axis). In general, these values are estimated by applying activity factors on previous exploration expenditures, e.g. an activity factor of 100% for an active property with good potential and a factor of 50% for an active property but past expenditures have not upgraded the property. At certain periods, a market factor may also be applied to reflect the activity of mineral property acquisitions. For properties that do not exhibit any exploration potential, only nominal values are applied.

The Bureau of Mines t.ced its investigations into sympathetic detonation of ammonium nitrate (AN) and ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to define the scaling law for safe separation from detonating AN-FO. Both missile- and non-missile-producing AN-FO donors, weighing up to 5,400 pounds, were employed with acceptors of the same size. The usual cube-root scaling law was not confirmed; exponents for the relationship S = f(Wx) for AN were 0.51 with non¬missile-producing donors and 0.61 for missile-producing donors. For AN-FO an exponent of 0.80 was indicated in the missile-producing case. AN-F0 in polyethylene bags appeared somewhat more easily initiated than bulk AN-FO. The efficacy of barricades in protecting AN charges was investigated. detonation distances were reduced from one-third to one-seventh when filled barricades were employed. The investigation was extended to dynamite with both types of donors. With 1,600-pound missile-producing donors and an equivalent weight of dynamite, initiation would be expected in 50 percent of the trials at 167 feet. The corresponding value in the non-missile case was 67 feet. The data developed in this program of sympathetic detonation will allow the development of a rational set of safe separation distances for AN, AN-FO, and explosives.

The Federal coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 has been criticized by those who say it goes too far in controlling the activity of private enterprise and by those who say it does not go far enough in eliminating fatalities and accidents in an accident prone industry. Possibly a better evaluation of this legislation lies somewhere in between. From the viewpoint of the coal industry it can be said that through the efforts of those engaged in mining, both the operator and the miner, the year 1969 marked a record year in mine safety with only 190 fatalities and a frequency of 0.84 per million man hours exposure. This outstanding achievement compared to any previous was the result of a determined effort on the part of a concerned industry to improve its reputation as being the most hazardous industry in the nation. After the effective date of the Act, March 31, 1970, the Bureau of Mines assumed complete control of all safety and health activities of the mining industry. Unfortunately, there was no improvement in the safety record of underground mines in 1970 with the total of 255 fatal injuries and a frequency of 1.04 for the year. The number of fatalities declined to 177 in 1971 but the number of underground coal mines had declined from 5,955 to 2,268 during the two year period. Meanwhile, surface mined coal increased from about 38% of total production in 1969 to over 50% in 1971, keeping the annual production of coal at a normal level but involving fewer men.

Industry 4.0 offers new possibilities to combine increased productivity with stimulating workplaces in a good work environment. Used correctly, digitalization can create attractive jobs in safe control room environments, which provide space for the employee’s full expertise and creativity. This is true also for the mining industry. But, to succeed, it is important to analyze the development from a worker’s perspective. What will happen to their work? What skills will be needed in the mine of tomorrow? We must also consider the risks, such as privacy issues, increased stress, and work-life boundaries. These questions must be understood if we are to create workplaces that can attract a young and diverse workforce to tomorrow’s mining industry. In this article, we try to illustrate what the new technology can mean for the individual miners. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0 (Industry 4.0 in the mining industry), where we try to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies may navigate their way to a future that works for all miners. To illustrate the range of possible outcomes, we formulate two scenarios: one utopian and one dystopic. At the end of our article, we bring forward six recommendations that can be considered a beginning of a road map for the human side of Mining 4.0.

"NI 43-101 is a rule that governs how issuers disclose scientific and technical information about mineral projects to the public in Canada. The disclosure standards apply to oral statements as well as written documents and websites. NI 43-101 does not apply to disclosure concerning petroleum, natural gas, bituminous sands or shales, groundwater, or coal be methane. NI 43-101 first came into force on Feb. 1, 2001 and was revised in December 30, 2005. "Operations routinely run flotation tests in laboratory mechanical cells to determine adjustments to plant operation based on feed flotation response or the effect of new reagents and dosages. The metallurgical results of these tests are certainly affected by changes in bubble size, which simultaneously impact the recoveries of the collection and froth zones. It is known that bubble size depends on the characteristics and operation of the machine in use, particularly on the gas flow rate delivered to the unit and the selected frother type and dosage. Although flotation rate constants have been related to bubble size, bubble surface area flux seems to be a more fitting variable to correlate flotation kinetics and cell performance, as it integrates bubble size and superficial gas velocity effects. However, although some evidence has been provided, a categorical relationship between cell recovery and bubble surface area flux has not been established. Our interest is to demonstrate this relationship to use it as a basis for developing soft sensors to track on-line collection zone recovery in cells. Flotation tests were designed to produce Cu concentrates for a range of bubble surface area flux values, obtained through changes in frother concentration at a constant gas flow rate, and by increasing gas flow rate at the same frother concentration. The tests were run on samples prepared from an ore batch supplied by a local operation, following strict grinding and flotation procedures, with a shallow froth to approximate cell recovery to that in the collection zone. Bubble sizes were determined using the sampling-for-imaging technique developed at McGill. The results unequivocally showed a consistent positive correlation between cell recovery and bubble surface area flux, and significant variations in performance when frother addition and gas flow rate were changed.INTRODUCTIONMineral flotation is a separation process to produce concentrates of valuable minerals by selective attachment of particles to the surface of bubbles. The process is carried out in machines where air is injected through a mineral pulp to form bubbles, and operated to create two zones: a bottom one (collection zone) where bubbles are continuously generated under conditions adequate to form bubble-particle aggregates by collision of the rising bubbles with suspended particles; and a top one (froth zone) where bubbles and bubble-particle aggregates continue to rise while concentrating and forming a froth layer for water and entrained particles to drain back to the collection zone, before overflowing as a concentrate stream. The phenomena occurring in these zones are complex and, in many cases, interactive, as they simultaneously affect stages of the particle separation sequence occurring in both zones. Although there have been significant advances in instrumentation to characterize particle and bubble populations, these have not resulted in knowledge to explain or models to describe phenomena from fundamental principles. Measurements continue to be limited to the development of empirical models for predicting the effect of operating variables on performance."

Experience from Australia had identified what is referred to as nonconventional surface subsidence behavior. This occurs under irregular surface topography, resulting in valley closure, valley floor uplift or “upsidence,” and far-field horizontal movements, occurring even beyond conventional “angle of draw” limits. This paper discusses such behavior recently observed in Pennsylvania and focuses on the 2005 case of Duke Lake Dam in Ryerson Station State Park. In July 2005, there was a significant increase in water leakage through a number of growing cracks in the dam, leading to the dam being breached to avoid an uncontrolled failure. An underground longwall mine was located approximately 900 ft to the north, mining at depths of 330 to 720 ft. Investigations, including a subsequent ground movement monitoring program, found a range of evidence in the vicinity suggesting that valley closure and farfield horizontal movements may have occurred, resulting from the adjacent mining. Besides discussing the phenomenon of nonconventional subsidence behavior and the Ryerson State Park case study, this paper includes an assessment of the mining, geology and subsidence impacts and suggested ground behavioral mechanisms.

The paper reports results on sinterability of iron ores from the mines of Tata Steel Limited. The objective was to improve tumbler index (TI) of sinter and its reduction parameters, reduction degradation index (RDI) and reducibility (RI) while maintaining strand productivity same or to improve. Pot sintering experiments were carried out with Joda and Noamundi mines having LOI 3.8% and 2.9% respectively. Sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) was varied in the 2.1 to 2.5 range and its MgO content was kept in the 1.4% to 1.8% range according to the blast furnace requirement. The ignition condition and vacuum was maintained according to the plant practice. The effect of variables namely, granulometric composition of ores vis-à-vis that of sinter mix, bed height, solid fuel, moisture content of green mix on the sintering indices was studied. The productivity with Noamundi ore (26 %+6.3 mm) was lower than that with Joda ore (45% +6.3 mm) at 4% coke in the mix and sinter basicity (CaO/SiO2) 2.1. However, with 4% coke (ash 22%) the RDI value was significantly high in case of Noamundi Ore, which decreased significantly to 29% with 5% coke. The size parameter of ore fines and its LOI content do influence the sintering speed and the sinter properties significantly. At 2.1 basicity ratio, the sinter with the Joda ore having coarsergranulometry had highest TI (=70.2%). The RDI (27%) in this case was inferior to that (23.2%) when Joda ores with finer size was sintered. Better RDI with finer sized ore could be attributed to better assimilation of CaO/ MgO with more balanced and uniformly distributed hematite minerals. The size parameter has been inter-influenced by the coke requirement. With the lower mean sized Joda ore the sinter RDI decreased significantly to 23% and the productivity improved to 42.9 T/(sq m*d) when the coke in the mix increased from 4% to 5%. An attempt to reduce the coke in the mix from 5% to 4% with respect to both the ores was not successful as it resulted higher RDI and lower strand productivity. The present study has revealed that sinter RDI improves (decreases) with decrease in the sintering time, while such correlation was absent between TI of sinter and speed of sintering. Corollary to this observation, one can take advantage of other stronger parameters to increase the sintering speed (and hence sinter productivity) without affecting the sinter strength. In the present study higher FeO sinters has displayed excellent RDI, however cold strength of sinter was not correlated with its FeO content. Every few years we are treated to a battle over trade policy when the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act comes up for consideration. In 1962 it is especially appropriate to consider the problem of mineral import -policy and the closely related problem of general import policy, for this year's struggle is different from those of the past in two ways. First, proposals have been made which are a substantial departure from past trade agreements legislation, and second, the formation and growth of the Europe Economic is Community may have an important bearing on the kind of legislation that is adopted. But this anticipates what is to come later. My task is to examine the problem of mineral import policy, although we shall find soon enough that general trade policy must be considered in order to get an indication of what is in store for minerals.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

The Cigar Lake ore body is a high-grade uranium deposit situated within water-saturated sandstone. In order to extract the uranium ore remotely, ensuring minimal radiation dose to workers, and also to access the ore from stable ground, the Jet Boring System (JBS) was developed. This method of mining involves drilling a pilot hole up through a frozen ore body and utilizing a high-powered water jet to mine out cavities. During the mining process an ultrasonic sensor will be used to provide feedback to the operator, who is located beneath the ore body, as to the dimensions of the cavity. However, more precise data is required to determine final shape, volume, and location of the cavity for mine planning purposes. Selecting a device that will provide sufficient range data in the challenging environment will be vital to optimizing the mining process. Major issues include fog build up and flying debris during mining, and an environment that is wet, dark, and cold A test cavity has been designed and constructed at the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) so that a study comparing three different technologies, as prospective candidates for the survey system, can be conducted. The devices being evaluated include a Senix ultrasonic sensor, an MDL Cavity Auto-Scanning Laser System (C-ALS), and a MESA Time of Flight (ToF) camera. The ultrasonic sensor is known to provide range data in foggy conditions but has low accuracy. The C-ALS has been developed for surveying remote cavities but is expensive and does not provide reliable data in fog. The ToF camera provides a high volume of data in a short time period, with potential to provide accurate information in extreme conditions, but has not been tested in a mine cavity application. Iterative closest point (ICP) registration is applied in an attempt to create a 3D point cloud from the scan data and to also compute rotation and translation of the ToF camera. This paper presents an overview of the challenges involved in conducting a survey within a JBS mined cavity, the analysis used to determine the suitability of each device, and the data collected from the test cavity.
