The standard method of employing preliminary air-drying to determine the moisture in coal has been criticized with respect to the loss of heating value from excessive air-drying. By this method, the coal is air-dried at approximately 10-15° above room temperature with the loss in weight being less than 0.1 percent per hour, and then the residual moisture at 105°C is determined. The total moisture is calculated from these two values.

During the past year there have been a number of significant investigations that have furnished evidence on the driving forces governing grain growth and on the role played by boundary impurities. Thus Burke has shown that in high purity alpha brass the rate of grain growth in the earliest stages is approximately inversely proportional to the existing grain size. This relation agrees with one derived by Zener assuming that surface energy was the driving force in grain growth. Also in confirmation of the surface energy hypothesis, Burke found that growth virtually stopped when the grain boundaries or even only the grain corners were melted.

Brunswick Mine is one of the largest underground zinc/lead mines in Canada, producing 3.4 million tones of ore annually. As mining activities advance to deeper levels, ground pressure also becomes greater. To cope with the highly stressed ground, the mine has taken some strategic measures to ensure the targeted production level. Such measures include the implementation of a pastefill system and transferring the mining method from primary/secondary stoping to pillarless pyramid stoping. With the pillarless mining method, stope sizes become smaller and the number of active stopes is also less than before. In addition, mining sequence and cycle time have to be strictly followed according to production schedule. The blasting project described in this paper tackles one of the steps in the mining cycle aimed at shortening the blasting cycle time in a stope. Furthermore, this project was conducted and managed with the Six Sigma initiative in Noranda which was implemented in the fall of 1999. Like a typical process review, the blasting operation was examined by breaking it down into many steps that can be quantified and measured. Each activity was then correlated with different factors associated with blast design as well as blast operations underground. It was found that the utilisation of voids plays a key role in the blasting cycle time. With improved void utilisation ratio, blasting cycle time has been reduced from an average of 12 shifts to ten shifts per stope. This improvement translates into approximately 180 000 tonnes of ore being blasted without any increase in manpower. This paper presents the technical aspects of the study, as well as some operational issues and improvements made during the project.

I. Situation and Surroundings, The Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chin-acates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the sta-tion by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion—a distance of about 15.5 miles—and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio—a further distance of 11.5 miles— making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Inés, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Mel-chor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. Shafts There are six shafts (Figures and lA) on the property, of which N os. 1 and 2 are abandoned. Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are the present working openings from surface and No 6 is an internal shaft. No. 3 is used primarily as a service shaft, while Nos.?1 and 5 are the main hoisting shafts. Orebodies The orebodies are of two distinct types. There are the massive sulphide bodies, and the areas of mineralized rhyolite containing gold values and a silica content high enough for fluxing purposes. The massive sulphide bodies contain chalcopyl'ite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of sphalerite and magnetite. The concentration of particular sulphides varies even within the same body. It is the areas high in pyrite, and to a lesser degree those, high in pyrrhotite, that are of particular interest.

FEW of us who waded ashore on the Norman beaches realized the importance of coal to a successful invasion. General Eisenhower and his staff had been aware of the essential need for coal and an able Solid Fuels Section had been set up under the direction of Colonel Robert P. Koenig, of Indiana. This organization met the requirements of the invading armies on their march to the Rhine. East of the Siegfried Line enemy territory, the Army Engineers were called upon for assistance. When the Engineers were advised that, in addition to their normal duties, they were to occupy and place in operation the coal mines in the Twelfth Army group area, plans were drawn up overnight and action was initiated immediately. The Sixth Engineer Special Brigade, a versatile outfit which made a notable record D-Day on Omaha Beach, was selected to handle the operation. Within 48 hours of the new assignment an advance command post was set up cm the west bank of the Rhine at Homberg, just below German-held Duisburg. The 368th Engineer General Service Regiment was assigned to the Brigade, and the British 44th Pioneer Group, including specialist personnel, was also attached. High temperature, methane, dust and other disasters are getting more serious with mining depth getting deeper and the development of mechanization in underground mines. An application of a descensional ventilation to a coalface is one of the effective measures to solve the above problemes. The descensional ventilation is an venttilation that an airflow in a coalface wouuld downflow along an inclination of a coalface and the direction of the airflow is the same as coalflow. Since 1960's, the descensional ventilation has been applied to 171 coalfaces in 46 coal mines of 23 coal mine administrations in China, such as Pingdingshan , Zhongliangshan, Pubai, Huangshi coal mine administrations. Among the 171 coalfaces, there were 104 coalfaces taking 60.8% in gently inclined seam. The coalfaces in inclined seam and steep seam were individually taking 18.7 % and 20.5 %. There were 77 coalfaces taking 45 % of the total in low gassy coal mines and coal and methane outburst mine were individually taking 17% and 38%. There were 141 coalfaces taking 82.5% of the total in potential danger of dust explosion. There were 125 coalfaces taking 73.1% of the total in potential danger of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, the descensional ventilation can be used in coalfaces under different conditions in China. The practice at home and abroad shown that the application of the descensional ventilation to coalfaces has obvious results in dust control, temperature control, preventing methane accumulation at top corner angle and control of spontaneous combustion in goaf. To more safely and reliably apply the descensional ventilation to coalface and to provide a way for the development of mine ventilation technology in China, the paper will have discussions on the following problems: METHANE EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION AT COALFACE WITH DESCENSIONAL VENTILATION Methane emission in a coalface with a descensional ventilation is an argued issue for many years. Base on the coal practice, special similar model tests and researches in China, the followings are our main comments. The Descensional Ventilation can Reduce the Methane, Accumulation at the Top Corner Angle. The measurements in six coalfaces with the downward airflow in Qinhemen Mine, Fuxin Coal Mine Administrations shown that the methane concentration at the top corner angle is often up to l% when the coalface has the upward, airflow. The max. methane concentration at the top corner angle is about 0.49 to 0.7% when the coalface has the descensional ventilation. Therefore, with the descensional ventilation, it basically solved the overlimited gas concentration at the top corner angle which is a potential danger to coal production. Because the direction of upfloating gas is opposite to the direction, of the descensional airflow, the descensional ventilation; could increase a turbulent flow mixing capacity of the methan gas and air, and reduce a possibility of methane; accumulation. Due to an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the descensional ventilation lower than an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the, ascensional ventilation, a less methane quantity will release from goat at the descensional ventialtion. It should be pointed out that due to a higher air leakage at ascensional ventilation and the direction of the air; leakage same to the direction of the natural upfloating methane in goaf, those will cause a large methane; accumulation at the top of the goaf and easy bring about, methane accumulation and overlimited methane concentration at the top corner angle with an ventilation vortexflow at the top corner angle. On the other hand, because the direction of the upfloation force function is upward, the descentional ventilation could minimize as possibility of methane accumulation at top corner angle in coal with the descensional ventiltion.

"Abstract-In recent years, several unsavory events in international mineral exploration, as well as several widely publicized project difficulties and failures have occurred. The report Setting New Standards has "raised the bar" and proclaimed a "commitment to continuous improvement... and change." We need to evolve from our "generally accepted" practices to more effective quality assurance policies, guidelines and standards. Several steps will be required to support the work of the "qualified persons" now wholly entrusted with technical and professional matters:• adopt a mineral development model and objectives appropriate to orient the selection of workmethods and verification procedures suitable to increase the profitability of these activities;• review the definitions and implications of the terms practice, guideline and standard;• review three quality assurance systems with emphasis on commitment of company management and complementary emphasis on systematic quality policies, plans and manuals (ISO 9000), continuous improvement through "profound knowledge" (Deming, 1986), and self-appraisal of continuous improvement and client satisfaction using the Qualimeter Guide (Québec Society for Quality);• determine, from the objectives of the mineral development model proposed and the problems often encountered, the requirements of resource/reserve estimation and the production feasibility study. To regain investors’ confidence and improve the returns from mineral development activities, an explicit commitment to quality by the board of directors and the management of every company is required.A number of mining companies have gained ISO 9002 certification for their operations but exploration companies should start by developing and implementing quality assurance guidelines and standards based on the ISO 9001 pattern, without achieving actual ISO certification in the short term. Both professional associations and industry organizations must be involved in the process of developing the required quality and continuous improvement guidelines and standards."

Degussa Corporation's peroxide-assisted leaching (PAL) process was evaluated in the batch concentrate leach circuit at Hecla Mining Company's Republic Unit. The product leached in this batch circuit is a high grade gold-silver sulfide (predominately pyrite) flotation concentrate. The primary objectives of the test program were to determine the effects of dilute hydrogen peroxide addition on leaching kinetics, sodium cyanide consumption and precious metals recovery. The results of the testing demonstrated that using dilute hydrogen peroxide produced the following benefits: - 1. Batch leach time requirements decreased by 80%. - 2. Sodium cyanide consumption in concentrate leach reduced by 55%, which translated to an overall plant reduction of 20%. - 3. In the concentrate leach process, gold recovery was increased by 1 to 2%. Because of the excellent metallurgical results achieved with the use of dilute hydrogen peroxide, as well as an economic incentive, PAL has become standard practice in the concentrate leach circuit operation. A complete description of the Republic PAL plant evaluation and performance is provided in this paper. In addition, process chemistry considerations in regard to the role of hydrogen peroxide are discussed.

A test of retrievable geologic storage of spent fuel assemblies from an operating commercial nuclear reactor is underway at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) of the U.S. Department of Energy his generic test is located 420 m below the surface in the Climax granitic stock. Eleven canisters of spent fuel approximately 2.5 years out of reactor core (about 1.6 kW/canister thermal output) were emplaced in a storage drift along with 6 electrical simulator canisters. Two adjacent drifts contain electrical heaters, which are operated to simulate within the test array the thermal field of a large repository. Fuel was loaded during April-May 1980 and initial results of the test will be presented.

"The existing Rondout West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) is part of the Delaware Aqueduct which has been in service since 1944 and accounts for more than 50 percent of New York City’s water supply. In early 2015, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection contracted Kiewit-Shea Constructors, AJV (KSC) to construct the Rondout West Branch Bypass Tunnel project (Rondout) in order to mitigate the leakage of 132 million L/ day (35 million gpd) of water from two areas of the existing tunnel; the Roseton and Wawarsing areas.The scope of the Bypass Tunnel 2 project is separated into two distinct phases. Phase 1 consists of completing the shaft sinking to a depth of approximately 274 m (900 ft) at shaft 5B, 213 m (700 ft) at shaft 6B and the excavation of approximately 3,850 m (12,500 linear ft) of tunnel at a diameter of 6.6 m (21 ft 7 in). This phase also includes the installation of 2,804 m (9,200 linear ft) of 4.8 m (16 ft) diameter steel interliner pipe through the new bypass tunnel with cast-in–place concrete liner for a finished diameter of 4.2 m (14 ft). Access chambers at the top of shafts 5B and 6B will be constructed for access and housing of the mechanical and electrical equipment for supporting pumps and valves.Included in phase 2 is the additional excavation from shafts 5B and 6B to the RWBT, and the drainage tunnel to remove ground water infiltration from RWBT. This work will be completed during a scheduled shutdown of the RWBT and will include approximately 31 m (100 ft) of excavation of the two connection tunnels. Additionally, construction of the permanent plugs within the RWBT will be undertaken. Figure 2 shows the layout of the work.Access to the work through the deep shaft at site 5B was critical to the success of the project. The hoisting system needed to be multi-functional to handle the different types of construction from drill and shoot of the shaft, starter and tail tunnel, the assembly of the tunnel boring machine (TBM), the excavation of the TBM tunnel including the supply of the precast segmental liner, the grouting operations, the installation of the steel interliner pipe and the cast-in-place concrete as well as ingress and egress of personnel. The production of the TBM operations was critical to the schedule of the project. This required a quick cycle for muck haulage and supply of the precast segmental liner in order to keep pace with the excavation time of the TBM. For TBM assembly, components were limited to a maximum weight of 104 t (115 st) for a single lift. Various cranes were analyzed for hoisting, however, none would meet all of the citeria. Therefore, the project team selected a specialized hoisting system designed in house in conjunction with Timberland Equipment Ltd. that consisted of a total of 14 separate hoists and winches with a total of more than 2,833 kW (3,800 hp)."

This study explores implementing a machine learningbased system to generate a 3D surface repre- sentation of the roof and support straps in the mine. Event cameras have been chosen for their performance in high-dynamic-range lighting conditions and for their low latency. To enable automated drilling and bolting, 3D vision using eventbased cameras has been developed. A ground-truth set is created using two, time-synced event cameras and a LiDAR camera. These sensors are used to construct a ground-truth dataset of corresponding event- camera images and surface maps from the LiDAR. The network is tested with stereopairs of event images and produces a depth image with ±5 mm RMS error on average across 1000 test images.

This paper outlines the evolution of managing high consequence risk scenarios in BHP Coal, with particular focus on managing the stability of an endwall that is adjacent to a public infrastructure corridor running through a Central Queensland coalmine. BHP Coal developed a Geotechnical Consequence Register after industry failures identified shortcomings in traditional risk assessment practices. Traditional risk assessments consider the consequence and likelihood of a geotechnical event occurring under normal operational conditions. As such, the risk rating for a high consequence, low likelihood failure may fall within the acceptable range, even where a lack of meaningful geological data exists due to the area being off lease or outside of mining reserves. The Geotechnical Consequence Register lists all geotechnical failure scenarios of high consequence, identifies if current controls are adequate, and highlights if specific Geotechnical Management Plans are required. This case study reviews a failure scenario that was identified through the geotechnical consequence register. The scenario had previously been considered low likelihood and subsequently driving a low risk; however, the likelihood ranking was impacted by a lack of geological data outside of the mining lease and predominately informed by an acceptable historical slope behaviour. Additional exploration identified previously unmapped faulting which increased the risk rating. The requirement to develop a specific management plan resulted in an increase in the required factor of safety, design changes, the implementation of additional monitoring and a corresponding monitoring Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP). In the case study area, the initiation of a geotechnical instability was identified early through the increased monitoring program. The instability was successfully managed and any impact to the infrastructure corridor off lease was prevented. BHP Coal has used the Geotechnical Consequence Register for several years to identify and assess high consequence geotechnical failure scenarios. In some areas this has justified additional exploration, more stringent design acceptance criteria and an increased level of geotechnical monitoring. The process has been successful in ensuring that geotechnical risk is controlled in areas that often receive less attention than active production areas.

"In order to determine the feasibility of a hydraulic ore hoisting installation, the optimal operating conditions were calculated for applying such a system at the Detour Lake Mine of Placer Dome Ltd. Next, a financial analysis was conducted in order to estimate the cost per tonne for hydraulic hoisting of the ore. Subsequently, the cost per tonne was compared with the hoisting costs associated with a new borehole hoist. Installing a hydraulic ore hoist at Detour Lake Mine was found to be feasible with considerably lower costs per tonne of ore. The applied research method appears to be very functional and can be used to do similar research for other mining operations. IntroductionThe principle of hydraulic ore hoisting is well known, yet hardly accepted in hard rock mining. Application of the system would result in a smaller diameter shaft requirement and a flexible, easily expandable system. However, underground ore size reduction might be necessary and practical experience with the system is limited. Following recent innovations in the field of pumping hardware, e.g. new GeHo and Siemag Transplan equipment, hydraulic ore hoisting should be seriously considered for certain mining operations. As a case study, a design was made for the development of the newly found QK-Zone at Placer Dome Ltd.’s Detour Lake Mine. Hydraulic ore hoisting has been compared with conventional skip hoisting by establishing the optimal operating conditions and pumping equipment requirements for similar capacities at a selected mining operation. Generally accepted equations for slurry transport were used to predict the variation of pressure and power requirements as a function of hourly production and pipeline diameter. These data are used to select suitable equipment and estimate cost figures in order to make a financial assessment."

Bentonite is an excellent sealant mineral material because of its desirable swelling and self-healing characteristics, low permeability, sorptive qualities, and longevity in nature. A new type of water-swelling building sealant made from bentonite was studied in this paper. The building sealant is prepared by Na-base bentonite, vaseline and paraffin wax under different mass fraction of bentonite (which is 60%,65%,70% respectively). Under unrestricted state, some properties of samples were investigated. The volume expansion ratio at 24 h is 211%, 222%, 256% , and permeability coefficient is 2.86×10-8 cm/s, 4.15×10-8 cm/s and 4.78×10-8 cm/s respectively; low temperature flexibility of the sample (bentonite quality is 65%, 70% respectively) is good, and it does not flow heated for 2 h under 80?. The results of XRD and SEM indicate that bentonite is coated preferably by vaseline, and the spacing of layers of bentonite do not changed. The sample can keep full water swelling ability, and has good molding process. The test results prove that the properties of samples may reach the standard of building sealant.

Significant effort has been expended and considerable success has been realized m the application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment in the mining and ore processing industries. This effort has been applied principally to process equipment with the objective of increasing throughput, minimizing labor requirements and/or improving grade or product quality. Less spectacular, but quite rewarding has been the successful application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment to a wide variety of material handling equipments. Information presented herein was gathered by examination of 29 fluidized-bed thermal coal dryers and by conferences with manufacturers and users of such equipment to determine what safety features could b incorporated in design, installation, and op ration to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Fire and explosion hazards are inherent in certain types of coal dryers in that high temperatures are employed; the sizes and volatility of material handled are capable of propagating explosions; and drying gases are seldom, if ever, low enough in oxygen content to prevent ignitions of dust clouds, distilled gases, or their combinations. This is especially true for fluidized-bed dryers in which the coal is dried in air suspension and in which atmospheric air is constantly introduced to temper the heated furnace gases. Occurrence of fires on hated bedplates, in dust collectors, and in hot gas inlets was common in nearly all the dryers examined. Forceful explosions which produced external effects had occurred in 11 (39 percent), and internal "puffs" or ?bumps? had occurred in at least 24 (79 percent) of the plants examined in the study.

A process has been developed for detoxifying spent potliner (SPL) in which the SPL is blended with limestone and an anti-agglomeration agent and thermally treated in a rotary kiln. The process has been proven and a commercial plant is in operation at Gum Springs, Arkansas. The treated by-product material has been delisted by the U.S. EPA and is now a potential raw material for many commercial applications. Finding uses for a non-hazardous material has many advantages over finding uses for a hazardous material like SPL. Complete usage of the by-product will complete the life cycle and eliminate any landfilling of non-hazardous SPL by-products or residues. Being non-hazardous and containing compounds used in the ceramic and numerous other industries assures many potential uses for the spent potliner by-product.
