A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

Hybrid stations provide an interesting alternative. In-house experience of Gautrain (South Africa), West bay (Qatar), Cairo line 3A (Egypt), and Melbourne (Australia) all aim to reduce disturbance to the city and its inhabitants during construction. Constructed in rock or in deep soil under water table, they take advantages of the latest construction techniques from cement grouting to freezing, and from traditional excavation of cavern to large tunnels constructed by sophisticated tunnel boring machines (TBM). Today, they form the ultimate construction challenge.

Use of PVDs and preloading on the ground can significantly reduce the time taken for ground to consolidate. Many soils in situ are lightly overconsolidated, with overconsolidation ratios (OCR) ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 due to various reasons such as glaciation, ground water level fluctuation, aging, cyclic loading, creep, erosion, cementation, etc. The effects of overconsolidation ratio are analysed in this study. Compression index and consolidation coefficient are important parameters in determining time – settlement response of soft soils under preloading and with PVDs. These parameters are typically estimated using oedometer tests on samples, with the assumption that the results represent the entire deposit. The in-situ time-settlement plots at different depths are used in the back analysis for estimating compressibility and consolidation parameters of in situ ground, resulting in more representative values that reflect the deposit's overall behavior. From observed time versus settlements plots, variations of compression index and coefficient of consolidation with depth of a deposit are presented. Estimation of compression index with depth is possible based on different OCR values as shown in this study. Barron (1948), Asaoka methods are used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation with flow in the radial direction.

"Damping behaviour of aluminite particulate reinforced ZA-27 alloy metal matrix composites processed by compocasting method is studied. The weight percentage of particulate reinforcement is 0,1,2,3, and 4%. A dynamic mechanical· analyzer is used ·to measure the damping capacity and dynamic modulus at the natural frequency of the specimen over a temperature range of 30°C to 300 °C both in the heating and cooling cycle. The damping capacity of the material is found to increase with increase in temperature and weight percentage of aluminite reinforcement although this is accompanied by a decrease in dyliamic modulus.The damping capacity and dynamic young's modulus exhibit a sharp decrease in their values around 300 °C a8 ZA-27 alloy undergoes a first order phase transition in this region which is confirmed by Differential scanning calorimetric studies. Several damping mechanisms have been evaluated theoretically for the material under study. The damping capacity at low temperatures is attributed primarily to coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch induced dislocations and high intrinsic damping of the matrix. At higher temperatures the damping capacity is attributed to ZA-27/aluminite interface, phase transformations and thermoelastic damping.IntroductionMetal matrix composites. A vast majority of the operating longwall sections use shield-type face supports to provide ground control in the United States. As a co-operative research program between the University of Alabama (UA) and Jim Walter Resources, Inc.(JWR), a joint research program is underway to study interaction of shields with surrounding rock masses. A series of analyses on the response of shields are performed using monitored data at a longwall face in a deep coal mine. In this paper, various effects of parameters, such as leg pressure, setting load, developing load, maximum loading rate, pressure in capsule, and convergence between canopy and base, are discussed and recommended as stability indices. A microcomputer program is being developed for instantaneous interpretation of the shield monitored data, and for giving warnings of potential problems. The preliminary results define the effects of the setting load, developing load, and rate of developing load or leg closure rate. The objective of the study is to understand the shield characteristics and their interaction with surrounding strata in real time, then develop a reliable program for maintaining longwall stability.

"The research aimed at improving the way screen performance analysis is conducted using a model that accounts for most feed and design parameters in its formulation. Thus, the aim was to validate the fine screen model that was developed at the Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) unit at the University of Cape Town. Fine wet screening is increasingly becoming an important application in fine grinding operations. Minera Saucito, a lead-zinc Mexican mine has replaced hydrocyclones with eight stacks of five decker derrick screens to close the ball mill in their concentrator plant. The five decker stacks have improved the overall plant throughput by 20% and have had the ball mill circulating load reduced considerably. As a continuous plant optimization process, a number of surveys were carried out to assess the performance of the 75 µm panel aperture installed screens. The surveys were conducted at seven different feed rates to the entire nest of screens to collect performance data. Using the fine screen model to analyze the results, it is found that as the feed rate increase, the sharpness of separation reduces. The CMR fine screen model was fitted to these results. The model fits the plant data with good accuracy. Simulated results based on this model are also presented.INTRODUCTION The potential of high frequency vibrating screens has long been identified as an alternative to hydrocyclones in grinding applications (Rogers and Brame, 1985). However, high frequency vibrating screens have had two main disadvantages, low capacity and high wear rates (Kelley and Mckeon, 2005; Teknikk, 2009). Current vibrating screen technology overcomes these challenges by multiple deck screen design and use of wear resistant urethane materials for panel construction (Kelley, 2007; Valine and Wennen, 2002). For a example, the Derrick screen’s material of construction is a tensionable urethane that provide high open area ranging between 35 to 45% with considerably reduced blinding (Valine and Wennen, 2002). Thus, there has been an increased uptake by the mining industry in the use of wet fine vibrating screens closing the ball mill as the final classification stage in the comminution circuit (Barkhuysen et al., 2010; Frausto, Ballantyne et al. 2017; Pelevin and Lazebnaya, 2009; Teknikk, 2009). Even though there is a number of models in existence, none of these models adequately predict the performance of high frequency vibrating screens (Karra, 1979; Rogers, 1982; Subasinghe et al., 1990; Trumic and Magdalinovic, 2011). Recently Mwale et al., (2016) developed a model for predicting the performance of high frequency vibrating screens using the partition curve properties. The input parameters of the model include screen open area (??) in m2, tonnage feed rate (????) (tph) and the weight fraction of solids (??) in the feed for a given panel aperture size. The model was developed based on data collected from a single deck industrial size derrick screen, in a pilot setup. The work presented in this paper is an attempt to test this model using data collected from Minera Saucito concentrator, an industrial plant whose comminution circuit is shown in Figure."

Optimal estimation theory has been applied to the problem of estimating process variables during vacuum arc remelting (V AR), a process widely used in the specialty metals industry to cast large ingots of segregation sensitive and/or reactive metal alloys. Four state variables were used to develop a simple state-space model of the V AR process: electrode gap (G), electrode mass (M), electrode position (X) and electrode melting rate (R). The optimal estimator consists of a Kalman filter that incorporates the model and uses electrode feed rate and measurement based estimates of G, M and X to produce optimal estimates of all four state variables. Simulations show that the filter provides estimates that have error variances between one and three orders-of-magnitude less than estimates based solely on measurements. Examples are presented that verify this for electrode gap, an extremely important control parameter for the process.

Since the start up of the IMMSA electrolytic zinc refinery in 1982, the dissolved iron coming from the acid attack of the ferrites has been precipitated by the jarosite process. At the beginning of operations, sodium jarosite was produced; however, the plant was converted to ammonium jarosite in 1990. The final storage of the residue is on the company&apos;s property adjacent to the plant, over the natural surface of the land. Before the construction of the refinery, several studies were done in order to evaluate the characteristics of the ground, such as, permeability, underground water localization, etc. The results showed that the site was adequate for the storage of this kind of material. For several years, the jarosite residue was filtered on rotary drum filters and was sent as a pulp to the storage area for settling. The water from the storage pond was recycled to the re-pulp tank for the jarosite residue. These filters were replaced in 1999 by an automated filter press. Since then, the jarosite residue has had a lower water content, and the zinc recovery improved. At present, a second filter press for the jarosite circuit is in the acquisition process to diminish the soluble zinc content in the residue from the present value of 2% to < 1% Zn.

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the weight and bulk of equipment that mining personnel must carry underground, the Bureau of Mines and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) investigated accurate and convenient gas samplers for use by mine inspectors in sampling mine atmospheres. The samplers are septum-stoppered glass vials commonly used for routine blood sampling. These lightweight, compact samplers yield results comparable with those obtained with conventional bottle samplers of 250-ml nominal capacity.

The Mascot concentrator treats 1,900 tons of zinc ore per day by gravity concentration and flotation. During the year 1929 the heads averaged 2.90 per cent zinc, and the recovery was 90.15 per cent; the concentrates produced contained 60.19 per cent zinc. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Acknowledgment is made to M. "As there are only limited numbers of bored pile constructed in sandstone and siltstone in Thailand, load transfer and settlement behavior of a pile in these rocks are still not fully understood. Major factors which influence the performance of the pile in the sedimentary rock should be systematically investigated. The objective of this paper is to analyze load distribution and load-settlement behavior of bored pile in sedimentary rock. Interpreted data was obtained from instrumented load testing results of large-diameter bored piles. These piles were drilled in aeolian soil and socketed in sandstone or siltstone, having socketed length varying from 1 to 3 times the pile diameter. Factors that influenced pile settlement behavior, consisting of rock type at the pile base, socket length, at-rest earth pressure and rock conditions, were analyzed. For interpretation of results, analytical solutions were used to estimate load bearing capacity and calculate settlement of each pile. According to test results of mobilized unit skin friction in siltstone, relationship of 0.1 – 0.3 square root of the unconfined compressive strength of rock appears to reasonably capture the measured shaft friction. Note that shaft movement in siltstone layer was not fully mobilized as maximum pile head settlement was still less that 1% of the pile diameter.INTRODUCTIONExtensive research of bored pile construction in soft soil in Thailand and Myanmar (Boonyarak et al., 2016; Aye et al., 2015) has been carried out. However, behavior of bored pile in weak rocks such as sandstone and siltstone is still not fully understood. Unit skin friction and unit end bearing of piles in these weak rock were reported by Horvath et al. (1983) and Pells and Turner (1980), respectively. Further research is still required to minimize variation in data presented in their study.This paper presents interpretation of load testing results of instrumented piles. These piles were excavated in aeolian deposit in the Northeast Thailand. Some piles were socketed in sandstone or siltstone. Analysis results of load-settlement, shaft shortening, pile settlement estimation, factor for calculating shaft friction and end bearing are reported. Discussion and explanation of pile behavior in sandstone and siltstone is provided.BRIEF INFORMATION OF THE PROJECTProject locationsThe construction sites are located in Khon Kaen and Nakhorn Ratchasima Provinces in the Northeast Thailand. Bored piles in this project were designed for supporting elevated structures for railways, overpasses and U-turn bridges for vehicles. B. F. TiLLson*— The manifold difficulties of accurate anemometry in irregular sections of mine passageways, the irregular distributions of velocities in cross sections of the same, and the disturbing influence of the observer upon the air flow, all indicate an undesirable inaccuracy of results obtainable by any standardized method of traversing the section by an anemometer. It seems obvious that another, and simpler, method should be used to determine the volume of air flow in mine passages, namely: 1. At appropriate locations cement or calked framework rings should be installed permanently to equalize the irregularities of sectional contour and provide a place and means of attachment for a temporary cloth brattice which bears a rigid orifice. 2. The measurement of the velocity of air flow through the orifice may then be by anemometer or, preferably, by Pitot tube measurements of the differential pressures on both sides of the orifice in accordance with the standard practices available in engineering 1iterature. † The constants may be determined for various measuring positions in relation to the resulting "vena contracta." 3. The position of the person who makes the measurements is behind the brattice out of the air stream. The Pitot tube does not offer as disturbing an obstruction as the anemometer. A recording gauge may be employed to integrate fluctuations in air flow through that portion of the mine. No traverses are required because the reading may be at a single central point. An anemometer can be used with an orifice flow. The orifice will increase the air velocity at the measuring point, with correspondingly more accurate measurements where the normal air velocity through the passageway is low. Portable brattices might be devised with the cushioning rims which would seal against irregular rock surfaces where permanent rings were not available or feasible. The development by the Ventilation Committee of standard procedures and devices for the orifice measurement of the flow of mine ventilating air might be a desirable project for this coming year. C. M. Smith (author&apos;s reply)—Thank you for your discussion of my paper on underground anemometry. Your suggested method of measuring underground air flow is a novel one which might be applicable in some situations. It should be tested along with other suggested methods in any investigation of this subject. G. E. McElroy*—In spite of the adverse publicity that vane-anemometer methods of air measurement have had in the past and that contributed by the present paper, I endorse Mr. Erickovic&apos;s statement that anemometer traversing "has proved to be widely applicable, expeditious and simple" and add that available methods are accurate enough for the purposes for which they may be used. The fact that the great majority of minor mine officials assess relative changes in rates of air flow by comparison of crude vane-anemometer measurements, known to average 20 to 30 pct high, has no important bearing on this subject, because state inspection standards were based originally on such methods of air measurement. Federal inspection standards are based on actual rates of flow as determined by traversing, and interest in traversing methods is rapidly increasing. In considering traversing methods, three aspects are of major importance: (1) the absolute accuracy of calibrations; (2) the degree of interference with normal flow conditions introduced by traversing methods designed for accurate measurement by shaft-mounted instruments; and (3) the proper "method" factor to use for approximate measurements by hand-held instruments. With respect to absolute accuracy of calibrations, we have always placed reliance on calibrations made by the National Bureau of Standards, with which manufacturers&apos; calibrations have usually agreed very closely. It is therefore particularly disturbing to find7 that calibrations made previous to June 1947 are presumably about 5 pct in error because of excessive registry caused by the thin flat plates on which anemometers were mounted for calibration. Velocities corrected for calibration have therefore averaged about 5 pct low in all probability. In this connection, it is interesting to note that an anemometer calibrated against Pitot-tube measurement by a single-point method in the Bureau of Mines experimental coal nine in 1923 indicated this same difference of about 5 pct and that the same instrument calibrated by a traversing method in a metal mine some months later indicated a difference in the same direction of about 4 pct. These results are reported by the Bureau of Mines.8 Regarding the degree of interference, or changes in velocity distribution, caused by the position of the observer&apos;s body in traversing operations, misconceptions seem to be especially prevalent, resulting in increasing advocacy of methods, such as the "clear section" method outlined in this paper, that cause just the type of interferences that they are designed to avoid. The degree of interference for any method may be gauged easily by a few experiments with a velocity-pressure gauge connected to a Pitot tube or with an indicating velocity meter such as the Velometer. In an experiment cited by McElroy and Richardson,# a decrease of 5 pct was noted at ten widths upstream from a 6-in. plank, whereas an observer&apos;s body at about the maximum practical distance of 6 ft downstream from the instrument is only about four widths away. In the Bureau of Standards paper previously mentioned, it is recommended that supports used in calibrations be at least 16 widths downstream. In practice, therefore, a downstream position of the observer is ruled out as far as accurate measurement is concerned. Operation of the anemometer by rigid shaft support from a point outside the section is seldom practicable; however, accurate results can be obtained, with the anemometer rigidly attached to a short shaft and held at arm&apos;s length, by an observer advancing across the traversed section while he faces the opposite wall and stands sideways to the current, provided that he keeps the instrument at least 3 ft away from his body at all times and traverses the entire section with it. If the traverse can be started with the observer in a side recess, the entire section can be covered in one operation. Normally, it would be covered in two half-sections. The presence of the observer&apos;s body does not, as is commonly supposed, increase the average velocity throughout the remaining part of the section. Rather, the velocities 1 to 2 ft on either side of his body are increased, but the distribution of velocities throughout the rest of the cross section remains normal, and a traverse made as stated gives a true average velocity for normal-flow conditions. Regarding the proper "method" factor for accounting for interference in the approximate methods of traversing with hand-held instruments, here again confusion prevails, for which the writer must assume some of the blame. IN most human endeavors a knowledge of the terrain is essential to the effective carrying out of projects, but no line of work is more dependent on maps than theoretical and applied geology. Maps of a kind do exist for all of the area of the United States, but most of them are crude affairs and of little use in engineering, planning, and scientific research. Topographic mapping in the United States was initiated on a national scale by the U. S. Geological Survey and the organizations that were merged in its creation to make base maps for geologists. Their work could not be effectively done then and cannot be effectively done now without maps that accurately delineate the earth&apos;s surface. The distribution of the rock masses that contain valuable mineral bodies, or that by their intrusion brought them into existence, is the first step in a study of the mineral resources of the nation. This work requires three-dimensional maps, that is, topographic maps on which the land forms are shown by contours.

Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

To provide a faster means to open and close permissible electrical enclosures. Approach: An inspection and repair port with a multiple start thread which provides a permissible joint has been developed and tested. How It Works: The inspection port screw thread has a large pitch, which allows the port cover to be rotated from fully closed 10 fully open, in less than one revolution. See Figure 1. When the cover is screwed back in. it be-gins engagement within one eighth turn because the screw design has eight separate threads. To prevent Its unauthorized opening, the port cover has a bolt guarded by ears which accept a padlock. This study was aimed at determining the effects of industrial action on profitability in the South African platinum mining sector. We compared companies where employees engaged in industrial action (affected companies) to strike-free companies (competing companies). Industrial action refers to strikes by rockdrillers, as these strikes typically result in the shutdown of production at the mines affected. A t-statistics analysis of significant differences in revenue and earnings of affected and non-affected platinum companies was conducted using data from platinum mining companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange from 2011 to 2015. Contrary to international studies, which suggest that the spillover effects of industrial action positively affect competing companies, our findings show that profits in the platinum sector decrease significantly during strike periods for both affected and competing companies. The results indicate industrial action is a threat to the profitability of all companies, and that employee demands should be prioritized and negotiated before they result in industrial action. Improved dialogue between management, labour unions, and employees in the platinum mining industry is recommended. The study contributes to the scanty literature on the effect of industrial action on the profitability of mining companies in a developing economy.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia&apos;s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for more than 20 years. Mortality from coal workers&apos; pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in X-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among U.S. coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above noted differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not illuminate the issue. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. If quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of pneumoconiosis in the United States, more effective dust control measures, as well as an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, should be implemented to reduce this potentially disabling condition.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. In recent years the widespread problems of air and water pollution generated by both population and industrial expansion have become a major public concern. Therefore, many municipalities are striving to achieve more efficient wastewater treatment processes so these wastewater&apos;s can be reintroduced into the waterways of our nation with little or no detrimental effects on the future beneficial use of that water. With this, improved treatment comes an ever increasing volume of wastewater sludge which must be disposed of in a manner of minimal impact on the environment. Furthermore, with demand for energy continually accelerating in this nation, our concern over high oil prices and our increasing dependency on foreign oil sources, there has been an ever growing interest in the largest energy source that are nation has, coal. However, surface mining of coal can cause many environmental problems when adequate precautions are not faithfully adhered to. These problems include water pollution from silt and/or clay erosion and acid runoff, produced by oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite; i.e., FeS2 + 3/02 + H20 + FeSO4 + H2SO4. One method of wastewater sludge disposal which can utilize large volumes of sludge for a beneficial project that may not compound our environmental problems is spray irrigation, to either depleted farmland or to abandoned strip-mined soils. Sludge is characteristically high in organics, as well as having near neutral to alkaline pH properties. With these two qualities it possesses a potential for neutralizing acid strip mine spoils, which would enhance the establishment of a vegetative ground cover. "Darcy's law is widely used to describe the oil and gas flow characteristics in the multi-pore media reservoir. However, the low-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media reservoir under low permeability conditions. Meanwhile, the high-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media near the wellbore. The gas flow velocities in coal in different deformation stage under different gas pressure gradient were tested and the relationships between gas flow velocity and gas pressure gradient were discussed, which can help us to investigate the transformation conditions of gas linear flow and gas nonlinear flow in coal. The results showed that the gas flow in the coal under low effective stress environment can be described by Darcy's law. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas gradually occurred and the start-up pressure gradient increased in the coal as the effective stress increased. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas also occurred in the coal at the yield deformation stage, however, the start-up pressure gradient decreased as the effective stress increased in this stage. In post-peak stage, the highvelocity non-Darcy flow of gas occurred in the coal under low effective stress environment. The gas flow in the coal gradually returned to be Darcy flow as the effective stress increased. The mechanism of the phenomenon is discussed based on the experimental results. The research results can be used to guide well test analysis and prediction of oil-gas production. INTRODUCTIONThe oil and gas flow in original multi-pore media reservoir are usually regarded as steady and linear processes and can be described by Darcy’s law. However, the low-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media reservoir under low permeability conditions. Meanwhile, the highvelocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media near the wellbore or workface. The gas flow in the multi-pore media even may be unsteady under some conditions such as gas emission and outburst.The phenomenon of underground water low-velocity flow in clays was deviated from Darcy’s law was found in the end of the nineteenth century (King, 1898). The deviation from Darcy’s law was later reported and investigated more (Swartzendruber, 1962; Miller and Low, 1963). These researches revealed that the start-up pressure gradient exists under low permeability conditions. Klinkenberg (1941) proposed that the permeability constant as determined with gases is dependent upon the property of the gas, and is a linear function of the reciprocal mean pressure. This effect can be explained by taking into account the phenomena of slip, which are related closely to the mean free paths of the gas molecules."
