One of the gravest problems of the iron foundry today is the accumulation of sulfur in commercial scrap and its effect on the castings made therewith. The ordinary jobbing castings today show a sulfur content of 0.18 per cent;, and occasionally as high as 0.22 per cent. The product of the foundry during the war is undoubtedly to blame for this rapid increase and conditions will become worse as the millions of tons of gray-iron castings of the war period return to the foundry in the form of commercial scrap. In the ordinary cupola remelting of pig and scrap, at least 0.02 per cent. sulfur is taken up; often double that amount. The high cost and difficulty of obtaining pig iron during the war period compelled the use of considerable scrap in the mixtures; frequently charges containing 90 per cent. of bought scrap were melted. Naturally the sulfur content of the castings increased. Until the advent of the basic-hearth electric furnace, the only method of holding the sulfur within reasonable limits was to use high percentages of pig in the foundry mixtures. Pig iron seldom contains over 0.05 per cent. sulfur, if well made. With pig iron forming 60 per cent. of the charge and the gates, runners, rejections, and bought scrap the other 40 per cent., the sulfur content of the castings can easily be held down to 0.10 per cent. Pig iron, however, costs more than scrap even when melting loss differences are considered, hence as small a percentage as possible will be used. The recent advance in knowledge of rational melting and the consequent reduction in losses directly due to oxidation of the metal and cold iron, has permitted the acceptance of castings with a much higher sulfur content than formerly. The steel industry also is seeking to determine how high sulfur may go with safety. In the iron foundry, however, there is the danger of a low cupola bed or an unduly retarded air-furnace heat, with the consequent raising of the freezing point of the metal and segregation effects resulting from high sulfur with insufficient manganese. IT is not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill- hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in- the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Be- cause of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results ' of doubtful value.

Department of Pathology, British Post-graduate Medical School, London:The experiments here recorded were devised and carried -out during the last two years in an attempt to corroborate the important work of Denny, Robson and Irwin (1939) in which they found that experimental silicosis could be prevented by means of metallic aluminum. By causing rabbits to inhale powdered quartz for several months they induced experimental silicosis. These animals then served as controls for comparison with another group which were dusted with a mixture of quartz and aluminum. In the second group silicosis failed to develop.Our experimental procedure was somewhat different. We resorted to intratracheal insufflation instead of simple inhalation, and we used rats instead of rabbits: otherwise the essential features of the original experiments were carefully duplicated.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES.A single dose of dust was delivered into the lungs of each animal. The dust was suspended in a fluid medium and injected by means of a syringe directly into the trachea in known quantity (technique of Kettle and Hilton, 1932). The suspensions were autoclaved before use and were injected with aseptic precautions. Having had a long experience of this technique we employed it with confidence and usually secured a fairly uniform dispersal of dust throughout both lungs. To carry out injections successfully one requires, above all, an even suspension of dust which will flow smoothly and quickly from the syringe. This is not difficult in the case of quartz, for, though it tends to settle out rather quickly, this can be avoided by constantly agitating the suspension. The syringe containing the inoculum may be shaken gently right up to the moment of injection and then emptied quickly to prevent sedimentation. Powdered aluminum is more difficult to handle, for the particles tend to flocculate and are not readily made to disperse evenly in saline, even by violent shaking. For this reason an emulsifying agent may be used to advantage, provided it does not complicate the experiment, a point to be mentioned again presently.THE EXPERIMENTSExperiments with quartz alone: Extensive silicotic lesions were produced in 23 out of 26 rats by the administration of pure quartz dust in doses of from 50 to 200 mg. per rat. The dust was so finely pulverised that the particles averaged about 1-p. in size: none was larger than 5 p. and 99 per cent. were under 2.5 p.Eight of these animals survived for seven months and were then killed...

The effect of water infusion on the flow of methane and on the production of dust was investigated at an active face in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The average total flow of methane at the face decreased by approximately 79 percent, whereas the flow from the ribs increased about 24 percent after infusion. On the day after infusion, dust concentrations appear to have been reduced; however, the presence of large quantities of rock dust obscured the results on the following days.

"INTRODUCTION The Bankhead mine of the Cane Creek Coal Mining Co. is in the central part of Walker County, Ala., 4 miles south of Jasper. The Mary Lee bed in this part of the State yields a practically free-burning coal which is marketed as a. steam-raising and domestic fuel. As mined, the coal ordinarily contains ash-forming impurities to an extent that makes it necessary to treat the coal by some washing process before it is marketed. At present the Bank-head coal coarser than 3-1/2 inch is hand-picked and the coal finer than 3-1/2 inch is washed in two single-compartment jigsThis paper contains the result of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests on a representative sample of the run-of-mine coal and the results of tests made to show the amount of coal liberated from impurities by crushing the coarser sizes. .This report is one of a series on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama.SAMPLING AT THE MINE'The Mary Lee bed at Bankhead consists of two benches separated by a rock parting which varies in thickness from place to place in the mine. The top bench has a very uniform thick-nest; throughout the workings and yields about 65.0 per cent of the output. The bottom bench varies greatly in thickness and in nary places becomes too thin to work at a. profit. The sample for the washability study was taken underground at a place which was typical of the mine as a whole. In taking the sample the working face was squared up and a representative section out from each bench. Care was taken to secure a, quantity of coal from each bench proportional to the quantity contributed to the mine output. The rock parting as gobbed in accordance with the usual mining practice. The total sample taken weighed 3 tons."

. In this work, samples of the alloy with composition of 50.9 % at. Ni were machined and were subjected to hot tensile test, after the machining all the samples were solubilized so that all were in the same condition during the hot tensile test. The hot tensile tests were performed between the temperatures 350-650°C and the yield stress were between 800 and 597.1 MPa and area reduction between 17 and 75% with respect to the initial area. The test at 350°C shows a fragile fracture characteristic while the hot tensile test above this temperature showed a predominantly ductile fracture. The fragile fracture is evidenced by the river marks that are characteristic of this type of fracture, because in this condition does not promote much plastic deformation. The higher temperatures present ductile fracture, because present the dimples that also characterize this type of fracture. This work shows the temperature relationship in the mechanical properties, more specifically the hot tensile test, in the NiTi alloy.

The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. This paper presents the dilution-based stability graph concept, the initial results and future plans to account for other critical factors and increase confidence in its application with the addition of more data outside Australia.CITATION:Suorineni, F T, Papaioanou, A, Baird, L and Hines, D, 2016. The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

Cyanidation tailings which are disposed in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural degradation, frequently reducing the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of pond geometry, local weather conditions and feed solution chemistry has been largely empirical though in many cases mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or an effluent limitation. To permit a more quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, WAD and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared against data collected for a North American tailings impoundment during 1998.

"In this paper, we have studied efficiency of different chemical structures of frothers on copper ore Majdanpek. The goal was to find out the best suitable chemical structure, which allows good bubble formation, size and interaction, forces on mineral surface. The particle size distribution was between 10 and 100 µm. Our research was oriented on three groups of frothers: alcohols, poly glycol ethers and poly glycols.We also used different collectors based on similar or less similar alcohol group in chemical structure as in frothers, expecting higher stability of air bubble in contact with copper minerals. Minimal potential energy was determinate in the hydrodynamic conditions for different particle sizes. It was founded that it is proportional to air bubble volume on 0.88° and contra proportional to the kinematics viscosity of pulp.Analyzing the results, we find out that poly glycols decreased surface tension the most. Also, it increased amount of coarser particles to the top of pulp. This group is less sensitive to pH value compared to the others too.From the class of frothers with higher efficiency in flotation process, we pointed OrePrep X-75 and X-133 as frothers with expressive frothing characteristic in the alkaline and low alkaline circuits. Special suitability of those frothers for floating copper minerals makes their hetero polar molecules with more than one hydrocarbon radicals connected to one polar group. However, those froters have no nether high or low solubility and are non-ionization. Those froters indicate some small collecting characteristics too. In dispersion systems, those two frothers make two types of bubbles: smaller di < 1.2 mm; V = 0.0008 cm3 and middle di < 16 mm; V = 2.2 cm3 (di – Bubble diameter, V – Bubble volume). Transportation speed of air bubbles it is possible to calculate based on equation: ?s = 27.5 * di 1.4 cm/s. Distribution of free surfaces for chalcopyrite is average 80% in the class –74µm +10µm and 20% in the class -10µm. The diffusion of carbon in Co-5% Fe alloy was studied in a belt-type pressure system at temperatures of up to 1330°C and press loads or nominal pressures of 7 020 tons or 42±3 kbar. Under these conditions, this alloy is in the solid state. Discs of graphite and prealloyed Co-5%Fe were used to make up the diffusion couple. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing press load due to the tendency of the low density graphite to dissolve in the metallic phase reducing the overall volume and increasing the density of the system. Furthermore, inhomogeneous plastic deformation may have promoted diffusion by creating defects in the alloy. Diffusion couples treated at atmospheric pressure exhibited graphite particles in the metal, while those treated at high pressures exhibited carbide in the form of Widmanstatten laths. Carbon analyses indicated increased carbon solubility with increasing pressure. This was confirmed from calculated high-pressure phase diagrams.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m&apos; black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

The oxidation of Cu2S in oxygen and the sulfating of Cu2O in oxygen-sulfur dioxide atmospheres was carried out under a variety of conditions. The oxidation of Cu2S was found to be retarded by entrapment of SO, and O2, which stabilized internal sulfates for long periods of time. The course of the reaction was followed by measuring weight changes and also by SO, evolution. Sulfating of Cu2O was a maximum at ratios of SO, to O2 approximating maximum SO, production. At elevated temperatures SO, was found to increase the rate of oxidation of Cu2 O to CuO even though sulfates did not form. All sulfating reactions followed the parabolic rate law indicating diffusion. MANY studies of the roasting of copper sulfides have been reported in recent years. Diev et al.1 investigated the roasting of chalcocite (Cu2S) in air, and oxygen enriched air. Lewis et al.2 also studied the oxidation of natural and synthetic chalcocite in air and oxygen atmospheres and their studies indicated that the maximum formation of water soluble sulfates occurred at approximately 450oC. Ashcroft3 reported that oxide production during the roasting of chalcocite resulted only from secondary decomposition of sulfates which were formed as primary products. peretti4 refuted this claim by showing that a layer of Cu2O appeared directly adjacent to the Cu2S during roasting of cylindrical briquettes of cupric sulfide, CuS. The linear advance of the Cu2S-Cu2O interface was used as a measure of the kinetics of the roasting reaction. The reactions proposed were: 2 CuS—Cu2S + 1/2 S2 [4-1] 1/2 S2 + O24 SO2 [4-2] cuzs +3/2 O2 4 Cu2O + SO2 [4-3] cu2o + 1/2 O2—2 cuo [4-4] At temperatures above 663oC, CuO was the only final solid phase reported. Below 663" C increasing amounts of sulfate were found mixed with the CuO. McCabe and Morgan5 investigated the roasting of discs of synthetic chalcocite and reported the following sequence of products beginning at the sulfide surface: Cu2O, a mixture of Cu2O and CuSO4, Cum,, CuO . CuSO4, and CuO. The principal reactions were reported to be: Cu2S + 3/2 O2-Cu2O + SO2 [5-1] CU2O + 2 SO2 + 3/2 O2—2 CUSO4 [5-21 2 CUSO4— CUO . cum, + SO3 [ 5-31 cuo . cuso4—-2 cuo + SO, [ 5-41 Eq.15-11 supports the claim of Peretti, Eq. [4-31, that CuzO is formed directly from Cu2S rather than as a secondary product from a sulfate as suggested by Ashcroft. On the other hand CuO was found to form as a secondary product from the decomposition of copper sulfate and basic copper sulfate, Eqs. [5-31 and [5-41. The formation of sulfates was explained by McCabe and morgan5 to be a direct reaction of Cu2O with 0, and SO, or SO, at distinct regions in which the partial pressures of each were such as to form the sulfate. Thornhill and pidgeon6 roasted both natural and synthetic chalcocite grains in air at temperatures between 420" and 550° C. They found a dense primary oxidation layer in contact with the sulfide. A secondary layer of porous oxidation products was found to expand with roasting time. The oxide products were leached away and the remaining core was studied by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns showed an increased conversion of chalcocite to digenite with time. Digenite,7 a defect structure of cuprous sulfide, occurs naturally as Cu,-,S where x = 0.12 to 0.45, with an average analysis of Cu, ,S. The mechanism of digenite formation was proposed as: Cu2S + oxygen—Cu1-8S + 0.1 Cu2O [6-1] Cuj.eS + oxygen—0.9 Cu2S + SO2 [6-2] It is apparent from the above studies that the oxidation of Cu2S, ultimately ending in CuO, may be divided into ihree general stages (all of which may occur simultaneously): 1) primary oxidation to Cu2O; 2) secondary sulfate formation; and 3) sulfate decomposition. Consequently reactions of O2 and SO, with Cu20 constitute important aspects of the roasting of chalcocite. Virtually no studies have been made regarding sulfating reactions involving Cu,O. Mills and Evans8 noted the effect of sulfur dioxide on the oxidation of copper at low temperatures and low SO, partial pressures. They reported a measurable increase in the oxidation rate of copper when SO2, was present. The hot ductility behavior of different microalloyed steel chemical compositions was examined simulating the thermal and strain conditions through the straightening or unbending section of the continuous casting machine. All samples were obtained from industrial slab casters ranging from 200 to 300 mm in slab thickness from steel mills throughout the world including China, Brazil, North America and Europe. The slabs were crack-free and hot rolled into prime quality products. No laboratory heats were tested. Although these microalloyed steels exhibit inherently lower hot ductility behavior, as measured by percent reduction in area at elevated temperature, these steels still exhibit sufficient ductility to satisfactorily meet the unbending stress and strain gradients existing in the straightening section of most casters. The majority of the published hot ductility data, as measured by % reduction in area (%RA), were based on laboratory heats and hence, are inaccurate in accessing the propensity for slab cracking on an industrial caster. This situation then results in invalid conclusions for different chemistries. This research has determined the minimum required %RA for crack-free casting is significantly lower than results based upon previously published laboratory generated data. For example, the literature quotes 40% RA minimum for Nb-bearing steels when in fact as low as 10% minimum RA is more than sufficient to assure crack-free casting based upon the extensive testing and analysis performed in this study. Instead of %RA, the measurement of strain energy has been introduced to evaluate hot ductility behavior. It is concluded that strain energy is a better measure of hot ductility behaviour than %RA. There is considerable value in the evaluation of the hot stress and strain curves, process metallurgy parameters and their relationship to slab quality instead of just basing hot ductility decisions on simple %RA measurements.

It is always necessary to expand existing buildings, so that they could meet the growing societal needs. Compared with demolishing them and then constructing new ones, the expansion of existing buildings could not only reduce project cost, but also save the use of energy and raw materials in projects. Therefore, it is widely adopted in most under-developed countries. However, the expansion of existing buildings is not an easy task. It has been involved with a lot of issues in defining the scope of work, planning landscape, managing construction activities, etc. This paper investigates the potential challenges in expanding existing buildings. The project of expanding the Al-Agoza Hospital, one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in Cairo, Egypt, is selected as a case study. In the case study, the project documents have been carefully reviewed. The project engineers and the health-care professionals working in the hospital have been interviewed. This way, the point of views from the owner, the architect/engineer, and the contractor have been taken into account. Several lessons are learned through the discussion with these people. The results from this paper are expected to provide pieces of useful advice and suggestion for the expansion of existing buildings in the future.

This paper presents design considerations for the major underground elements of the pending BCRUA Phase 2 Raw Water Delivery System Project. These elements include two Lake Taps; an 8,800 LF, minimum 10-ft OD intake tunnel; a suction chamber with 6 Pump Shafts; a 30-ft diameter, 300-ft deep Main Shaft; a 2,600 LF Transmission Tunnel with 78-inch steel liner; and a 130-ft deep shaft on the Transmission Tunnel. The tunnels and shafts will be excavated through the Glen Rose limestone. The design development included consideration for technical requirements, easements, third party commitments, previous local project experience, and constructability based on contractor outreach.

A special committee on the Classification of Surface Mining Methods was appointed by the A.I.M.E. Board of Directors on Nov. 17, 1939. The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. The following form of classification was reported to the Board by the Committee on May 16, 1940, as its unanimous recommendation. Bank Mining is distinguished from Pit Mining by its situation. In Pit Mining the ore is taken from an operation below the level of the surrounding surface. In the secondary classification, Bottom Benching is an operation in which a bench is attacked from below, but the material mined might be hauled up out of the pit or moved out horizontally or downward.

A special committee on the Classification of Surface Mining Methods was appointed by the A.I.M.E. Board of Directors on Nov. 17, 1939. The committee was headed by Gerald Sherman, and the members were Chester A. Fulton, C. F. Jackson, Earl E. Hunner and Arthur Notman. The following form of classification was reported to the Board by the Committee on May 16, 1940, as its unanimous recommendation. Bank Mining is distinguished from Pit Mining by its situation. In Pit Mining the ore is taken from an operation below the level of the surrounding surface. In the secondary classification, Bottom Benching is an operation in which a bench is attacked from below, but the material mined might be hauled up out of the pit or moved out horizontally or downward.

"When selecting an impact hammer to drive a particular pile, the decision is often based on local experience. In those cases, the contractor falls back on previous experience or draws on the experience of the hammer manufacturer to select the hammer that will be able to do the job. Obviously, a more scientific approach would be to perform a pile driving simulation using one of several commercially available software packages (e.g., GRLWEAP, AllWavePDP or PDPWave).However, this type of analysis requires quite a bit more effort. First, an accurate model of the pile driving process has to be developed, which includes a model of the soil profile at the job site and input into the analysis program. Then, the model must be analyzed to assess whether the combination of hammer, pile and soil model work.Over the years, numerous individuals and organizations have tried to develop something that would fit nicely in between these approaches: something more advanced than a gut feeling yet something that could be done on the back of an envelope; in other words, a “Goldilocks” approach — not too simple, not too complex, but just right.Screening Tool CriteriaThe goals of the approach are twofold: (1) select the appropriate impact hammer to drive an open toe steel pipe or H-pile, and (2) then use the model for the subsequent high strain dynamic testing (HSDT). The Goldilocks approach centers around five different criteria.1. Maximum Driving StressTo minimize the risk of damage, the maximum driving stresses are generally limited to 80 to 90% of the yield stress (fy) of the steel section. This approach does not consider issues such as hammer alignment, initial imperfections, denting and/or elastic buckling, and pile material fatigue history. However, even when these issues are not applicable, limiting average stresses to 0.9fy or even 0.8fy does not necessarily mitigate the risk of pile damage (Mostafa, 2011)."
