The reduction and nitridation of preoxidized ilmenite pellets were investigated with the prospect of creating grain refiners containing titanium oxides and titanium nitride dispersoids. All the reduction and nitridation reactions were conducted in a furnace with a thermogravimetric analysis system under a H2-N2 gas mixture of 5 L/min. The ilmenite pellets were reduced at 1100°C for 4 hours under 80%H2-20%N2 gas mixture, and then respectively nitrided at 700°C, 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C for 12 hours under 10%H2-90%N2 gas mixture. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and analyzed by Energy Dispersive Spectrometers (EDS) and Electron Probe Mapping Analysis (EPMA). Iron oxides were reduced into metallic iron, and oxides of titanium were found, but titanium nitride particles were not identified in the products under the prevailing conditions.

An EAF dust generated in a Swedish steel mill has been leached in hydrochloric acid at The solution obtained has been subjected to purification by cementation followed by precipitation of zinc with sodium carbonate. The thermal decomposition of the precipitate was studied using thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The results show that during the calcination of the precipitate three different reactions occur. The decomposition of the solid phases Zn5(CO3) (OH)6, CaZn(CO3)2 and CaCO3 occur completely at 370°C, 560°C and 940°C respectively, yielding a final product containing 61.9% ZnO and 38.1% CaO. Methods to minimize calcium and manganese in the final product are discussed.

A literature review concerning dredging hazards and dredge safety practices and an examination of MSHA accident and injury statistics on dredge mining in the United States provided the background for an analysis which was completed by visiting 31 dredge operations, dredge manufacturers, and dredging experts. The principal hazards are discussed and countermeasures are suggested in several areas. Drowning is the single largest fatal injury category. Special emphasis is given to the design, care and use requirements of personal flotation devices.

Data concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as " grindability-index numbers," but grind-ability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pull'erized product by a method comparabLe with- commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulvcrizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation,it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-¾-inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horsepower-hours." The channel-roller pulverizer hereinafter described is believed to meet these requirements. Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.

CalMat Co. is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the United States. The CalMat Reliance plant is located in Irwindale, California, and is situated on an alluvial fan formed by the San Gabriel River. The fan deposits are of Quaternary age and were derived from granitic and metamorphic bedrock exposed in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The sediments are poorly sorted and range in size from large boulders to clay size particles. The coarse material is hard and durable and consists of quartz diorite, granodiorite, granitic gneiss, schist and minor amounts of volcanic rock. The matrix is comprised of silty sand with varying amounts of clay. Thin silt and clay lenses occur sporadically throughout the deposit. The clay content of the matrix and the degree of weathering of the coarse material increases with depth. Based on seismic data, the alluvial fan varies from 200 to 400 feet thick and overlies crystalline bedrock. The Reliance plant was constructed in 1971 and 1972. It has a nominal capacity of 1200 to 1400 tons per hour, and typically produces more than three million tons of aggregate products per year. Alluvial fan sediments are mined from a gravel pit situated adjacent to the plant. The material is fed through a mobile, 48- by 60-inch, in-pit jaw crusher, then transported by conveyor to the main plant to be processed. The plant is modern and highly efficient. It has a typical wet and dry circuit and is capable of producing a wide range of aggregate products. To extend the life of the plant, a 9,000 foot conveyor system is being constructed to connect it to a granite quarry operated by Azusa Rock Inc. The quarry is located north of Irwindale, and is 50 percent owned by CalMat Co. The conveyor will be used to export crushed rock from the quarry to Reliance. The existing plant will be modified to process the crushed rock.

WE are living in a mineral and technological civilization. The Encyclopedia Britannica defines civilization as follows: "It is the final test of a progressive civilization that a given effort shall produce a larger modicum of average individual comfort, and the pursuit of this ideal has been from first to last the impelling force which drives civilization onward". This "individual comfort" demands labour-saving machines and devices such as motor cars, radios, and thousands of other inventions, most of which require minerals and metals in vast quantity for their manufacture. In fact, more minerals and fuels have been used in the last third of a century than in all previous world history. Since 1800, the world's production of metals has increased more than a hundred fold (1). Scientific discovery is now advancing on a wide front, thanks to the research work that is being carried on in progressive countries. The world's work is now being done with very much less human drudgery than in the past. We do not have to toil for our living as our ancestors did, even if we follow their occupations. The average man has had many years added to his life-span, but, apparently, little to his spiritual stature and less to his common sense.

New underground coal mines have become increasingly expensive to open. A simple drift mine producing a raw coal product can cost as much as $50 million while a new shaft mine producing a washed coal product can cost up to $200 million. As a result, few if any speculative new mines are constructed. Normally, a long term coal supply agreement is needed to justify new mine projects. Negotiating a supply agreement prior to production start is difficult. Pricing must be based on estimated rather than historic costs and coal quality must be estimated from core hole samples versus actual shipments. Further in todays competitive coal markets, there is little margin for error in either price or quality.

Investigation of a variety of mines to determine efficiency for rare- earth extraction has resulted in a solvent extraction technique wherein Primene 81-R,4 N-benzylheptadeeylamine (BHDA), and Primene JM-T give favorable extraction from sulfate solutions. Extraction from chloride, nitrate, and perchlorate solutions is negligible. Distribution coefficients for 10 rare-earth elements with Primene 81-R establish an extraction sequence beginning with lanthanum and proceeding through lutetium according to atomic number. Yttrium and ytterbium are exceptions in the extract ion sequence.

IT is with sincere appreciation and a deep sense of responsibility that I accept the honor of delivering the Howe Memorial Lecture. In our time metallurgical research has delved into phenomena ever more complex in character, so that much of this work must be done by organized teams. We, of the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories and the Electro Metallurgical Co., are truly a team and the lecture which is to follow is due largely to a few of the outstanding members of that team here cited and well known to you in their own right: John Lamont, whose work deserves special recognition, Walter Crafts, William Forgeng, William Binder, Robert Fowler, and David Swan. Thus it is a fitting pleasure to accept this honor for the research institution which I represent. Henry Marion Howe was truly inspirational and his breadth of view was such that he could use either the method of rigid proof or implied mechanism to further the broad understanding. But perhaps his outstanding characteristic was his sound judgment and his ability to weigh observations. The following is replete with observations and judgment as to their implication. We would like to feel that it is the type of dissertation which Howe, himself, would have enjoyed. Chromium carbides in stainless steel have, in a sense, been a key to the progress of the stainless steel industry. Brearley's first stainless steel, containing approximately 0.30 pct C, was successful because it differed from previous Fe-Cr alloys in that the carbides were present in such amount and form as to provide the stainless and cutting properties. Again, the 12 pct Cr die steels with a carbon content of 1.5 pct or more achieved their properties by virtue of the form and distribution of the chromium carbides. In the straight chromium steels with from 12 to 25 pct Cr, chromium carbide amount and distribution are once more the determinants with respect to physical properties and corrosion resistance. In each of the cases just cited the role of the carbide is in essence similar to that of iron carbide in carbon steel and this story is so well known that we need not dwell on it. In the austenitic stainless steels, the chromium carbide plays only a minor positive role with respect to mechanical properties, and for corrosion resistance the objective is to achieve maximum homogeneity. Thus the tendency has been to ever lower the carbon and correlatively the chromium carbide content of the austenitic steels. Today stainless steels with carbon less than 0.03 pct are beginning to find their true place, and this is being aided in major degree by our Company's introduction of a new type of ferrochromium having negligible carbon. The role of carbon in these austenitic steels has long been recognized, and a truly enormous amount of research has been devoted to the subject. Much has been learned about corrosion resistance, but the attack on the problem from the point of view of carbide precipitation and the nature thereof has left much to be understood. Because of its fundamental importance to the future of stainless steels, further study of the mechanism of carbide formation in austenitic steels is of interest. In the 18-8 Cr-Ni steels, which are typical of the austenitic class of steel, carbon is soluble in the aus-tenite to the extent of approximately 0.15 pct at 1832°F (1000°C). The solubility becomes less with decreasing temperature, so that at 1652°F (900°C) the solubility limit is approximately 0.06 pct, at 1472°F (800°C) it is about 0.03 pct, and at 932°F (500°C) it is approximately 0.01 pct. Obviously this is the ideal situation for the classical precipitation phenomenon. It is true that, in a sense, 18-8 austenite resulting from annealing is in a metastable state, and the phenomenon of ferritic precipitation from this austenite should be considered. However, in a so-called fully austenitic 18-8 steel this is secondary with respect to the carbides and can be neglected. A wide variety of chromium carbides is known. Only one chromium carbide, Cr,,C,,, frequently referred to as Cr,C, has been found in unmodified low carbon 18-8 steel. This, fortunately, simplifies the study of the precipitation phenomena. For this study an A.I.S.I. type 304 stainless steel of commercial quality was selected. Analysis showed C 0.07 pct, Mn 0.49 pct, Si 0.33 pct, Ni 9.34 pct, Cr 18.91 pct, and N 0.033 pct. As expected with this composition the steel was homogeneous after annealing except for a few pools of ferrite, which were disregarded in that their location was not coincident with subsequent carbide precipitation areas. On corrosion testing the steel was normal and typical of good commercial quality. Specimens 1/2xlx4 in. were annealed and subjected to precipitation heat treatment for 100 hr at 100" temperature intervals from 1000° to 1500°F and for ten selected intervals ranging from 5 min to 64 hr at 1300°F. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, ferrochrome, smelting, investment, Zimbabwe Four smelting plants currently make up the ferrochrome smelting capacity in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco represent more then ninety per cent of Zimbabwe?s ferrochrome smelting capacity, while Maranatha and Oliken contribute the difference. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.

"This paper compares the behaviour of gold and ore in the grinding circuit of Hemlo Gold Ltd. Particular attention is given to grinding kinetics, classification behaviour, and liberation. For grinding kinetics, laboratory grinding of gold flakes and silica, 840-1200 um in size (14/20 mesh), was also performed to provide a standard for comparison and to study in a controlled environment the mechanisms of breakage, folding, smearing and impacting.Grinding kinetics were characterized at laboratory scale with breakage and selection functions. The breakage function showed that 75% of gold disappearing from the 840-1200 um class reported to the 600-840 um; this figure is much higher than for silica ( 46%) or most other minerals, and implies that comparatively fewer fine fragments are produced from the breakage of gold flakes, on account of gold's malleability. The selection function of silica was four times that of gold. At plant scale, the ratio of the selection function of ore and gold increased from 6 for at 50-100 um to 20 at 500-1000 um.Observation of original flakes and their fragments with the scanning electron microscope showed that the main mechanism of ""grinding"" from the 840-1200 um to the 600-840 um class was folding rather than actual breakage. This was confirmed by a measure of individual flake weight. The postulated breakage cycle is that relatively globular flakes become increasingly serrated through grinding; they can then regain their original shape through folding and reflattening into cylindrical and spherical shapes, as the majority does; however, some fragments will at this point undergo actual breakage. Photographic evidence is presented to support the proposed mechanisms.Smearing of gold unto silica was observed when silica was ground after a gold, and embedding of silica into gold flakes when gold was ground after a silica. Both mechanisms occur whenever gold and harder minerals are jointly ground, and result in ""unliberation"" of gold. It is postulated that smearing of gold onto other minerals plays an important role in explaining how gravity recovery can increase overall gold metallurgy, especially when used ahead of flotation.Classification of gold in the primary hydrocyclones takes place at a much finer cut-size than ore, 20 vs. 57 um. This and the slower grinding kinetics result in high gold circulating loads in the primary loop, 6700%, and a gold content in the primary cyclone underflow (PCUF) is twenty four times that of the ore. The gold size distribution for primary cyclone overflow is much finer than that of the ore, although they are essentially similar in the PCUF.Liberation, or more accurately ""gravity recoverability"", was assessed with a 7.5 cm (3"") Knelson concentrator. It varied between the thirties for the primary mill discharge and two cyclone overflows, to highs of 89 to 92% for the PCUF and secondary mill discharge, 89 and 92%, respectfully."

Traditionally, stratigraphic deposits have been represented by a large number of gridded surface and product analytical models, related to each other by naming convention. This approach, though suitable for structurally simple stratigraphic deposits, does not lend itself well to addressing the complex style of stratigraphic deposits which are becoming more prevalent. In addition, the sheer number of individual gridded models involved makes it very difficult to keep a consistent audit trail of the overall deposit model. Recently, a new enhanced block model structure known as Horizon Adaptive Rectangular Prism (HARP) models was introduced to address these issues. An HARP model is specifically designed to allow stratigraphic units to be represented with virtually no loss of structural integrity, by allowing the tops and bases of the individual HARP blocks to ‘bend’ in concert with the input surfaces. By bringing together the best of grid modelling, triangulation modelling, block modelling and grade estimation, the HARP model opens up many exciting new opportunities for the stratigraphic geologist or engineer to take their model further than was previously possible. Examples of improvements in modelling methodology using a HARP model include: the ability to represent complex normal, reverse and thrust faulting; the ability to store thousands of additional analytical, geotechnical or calculated variables in each individual block; advanced visualisation, manipulation and plotting capabilities; and the ability to calculate volumes and resources against complex, three-dimensional (3D) solid pit designs. Finally, several ‘real world’ scenarios, illustrating how this advancement in modelling technology can benefit a wide range of mining professionals are detailed. These examples demonstrate how productivity gains can be made in both long-term resource modelling and short-term ‘week by week’ geological modelling as an adjunct to mine planning.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. INTRODUCTION SOONER or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and. conduct of the development work must be governed to some extent by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. The separation of iron values from a typical Indian iron ore slimes containing 57.2% Fe, 5.81% SiO2 and 7.05% Al2O3 by wet magnetic separation and selective magnetic coating is investigated. The iron phases, which are mostly paramagnetic in nature, have been coated with magnetite or colloidal magnetite in presence of surfactant by manipulating the surface properties of the minerals. The studies have indicated that an iron concentrate containing 62.32% Fe with 66.5% iron recovery can be obtained at medium magnetic intensity of 7.8 kG which is much less compared to normal magnetic intensity of 13 kG to14 kG required for hematite-goethite separation. The performance of this technique with respect to both grade and recovery is superior to conventional magnetic separation or flotation of iron ore slimes.

Microseismic monitoring has become standard practice in the mining industry as a ground control monitoring tool at depth. Translating the information into practical hazard assessment tools for the rock mechanics practitioner is the focus of research jointly conducted at Creighton Mine by INCO Mines Technology Centre (MTC) and the Geomechanics Research Centre (GRC) in Sudbury, Ontario. Rock mass damage mechanisms are typically related to stress and the presence of geological structures. Due to well executed de-stress blasting practices at the mine, stress related problems are minimized. However, structurally related damage mechanisms associated with shear zones, faults and joints pose a substantial hazard. Identifying active structures from the dataset of seismic and microseismic events is generally problematic. We propose a new methodology that uses a combination of spacetime event density, hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis to identify planes of microseismic activity, termed active planes (APs). Once identified, the presence and intersection of active planes can be used to provide a hazard ranking for nearby excavations. The ranking is based on the standard Q rock mass classification system, with emphasis on the joint set number (Jn) and stress reduction factor (SRF) parameters. If the rock is treated as a fractured continuum, then, the Jn indicates the degree of freedom for blocks to move and hence, increased potential hazard. An increased hazard can also result if the APs are larger-scale and discrete (faults) rather than ubiquitous (joints). In this case the SRF is used as a measure of the degree of looseness in the rock mass.

In the last four decades significant effort has been devoted to designing piles in expansive clay soils. Nevertheless, only a scant effort has been devoted to the elimination of heave forces acting on the upper part of lightly loaded piles. For this purpose, an investigation site was established in Karmiel in Northern Israel. On this site sixteen unloaded cast-in-situ piles, both uncoated and coated, were installed in a moderately expansive clay soil in the end of summer 1996. The piles were executed to different depths ranging between 2m and 7m and were observed over a period of 27 months. Another nine unloaded cast-in-situ bored piles were installed at the end of summer 1998 for carrying out pullout tests. These piles were embedded two meters from the ground surface. Results obtained from observations and from full-scale static pull out tests showed that separating the piles from the surrounding clay in the active zone by a twin walled sleeve eliminated the heave forces significantly. The scope of the work is, determining of the elimination degree of the heave forces due to the provision of the above sleeve.
