Uniaxial compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens, 10mm in diameter and 15mm in height, machined from an extruded AZ31B magnesium billet. The tests were conducted under isothermal conditions to a true strain of 0.5. The study compares macroscopic flow anisotropy between the extruded (ED) and transverse (TD) directions in the temperature range of 300°C to 500°C, and strain rate range of 0.001s-1 to 1s-1. Compression of ED specimens at low strain rate (0.001s-1) exhibited axisymmetric flow, and no significant differences were observed between geometries of specimens deformed above 350°C under the same strain rate. Deformation of TD specimens at low temperature and/or low strain rate resulted in elliptical cross-sections, with the anisotropy of flow being less significant at higher temperatures. Other studies performed using rolled plates have proposed that pyramidal slip and cross-slip at higher temperature eliminate the effects of initial texture, while the dominance of prismatic slip at lower temperatures will result in anisotropic flow. It is believed that the initial fiber texture common among extruded HCP-structured materials plays a role in the anisotropic deformation behaviour observed in the extruded specimens

The heats of the glass-crystal transformation of nepheline (Na0.7794K0.2206AlSiO4) and wollastonite (CaSiO3) and the heat of formation of nepheline at 298.15° K were determined by solution calorimetry. For the glass-crystal transformations, the heat values were -9.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole for nepheline and -8.1 ± 0.2 kcal/mole for wollastonite. The heat of formation of nepheline was -34.8 ± 0.6 kcal/mole from the oxides and -501.0 ± 0.5 kcal/mole from the elements.

This paper reports the anodizing voltage, gas evolution and sparking behaviors of an anodized coating formed on AZ91D in a silicate containing solution. According to their responses to an anodizing current, a four-stage anodizing mechanism is proposed. At the same time, the formed coating is characterized in terms of its microstructure, composition, thickness and corrosion performance. It was found that deposition of MgSiO3, Mg(OH)2 and MgO as well as dehydration of Mg(OH)2 are involved in the anodising process; the vigorous gas evolution accompanied by intensive sparking and the corresponding negative anodising efficiency in the later stage of the anodising process are closely associated with thermal decomposition of water due to the high temperature resulting from the intense sparking on the surface of the anodized alloy; the thickness, porosity, and composition of the anodised coating on a magnesium alloy depend on the final anodising cell voltage; and the corrosion resistance of a thick but porous coating containing more silicates appears to be more corrosion resistant than a thin but compact coating containing less silicates.

The effect of metalliferous grains on electrical comminution efficiency was investigated by comparative experiments using natural rocks and synthetic samples. The result indicated that the existence of metalliferous grains affects the breakage probability and product size distribution of electrical comminution. On average, metalliferous grains increased the breakage probability of particle in the first pulse discharge by 55% and generated finer product at the coarse end. As a result, particles with metalliferous grains exhibited higher energy efficiency than that without metalliferous grain in electrical comminution. A positive linear relation between product fineness and specific energy in electrical comminution was observed. With the assistance of numerical simulation on the electrical field distribution of ore particle, the role of metalliferous grains in electrical comminution is confirmed and the mechanism of metalliferous grains effect is elucidated. Understanding of the effect of metalliferous grains on electrical comminution is important to evaluate the feasibility of applying electrical comminution to ores with different mineral composition, and to understand the breakage behavior in electrical comminution.

Methane is increasingly considered as a promising reductant for metal oxides, including chromite. To assess the possibilities of such reduction route, the gas-solid reactions between Ar–CH4–H2 gas mixtures and synthetic chromites are studied between 950 and 1050 °C. The influence of Mg and Al additions on the reduction-caburization of (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4 solid solution is investigated thermodynamically, structurally and kinetically. The product phases are examined by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The reaction rate is derived from real-time exhaust gas measurements and post-reaction product analyses such as oxygen analysis. Kinetic models are proposed based on the product phase morphologies and confronted with the empirical data.

"The Northconnex Project is a twin nine kilometre tunnel in Sydney, Australia, linking the M1 PacificMotorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. Access to the tunnels will befrom portals at either end and from three vertical shafts spaced along the length of the motorway. These shafts will provide access for equipment, plant and personnel, removal of spoil during construction,ventilation, and emergency egress points during tunnel operation. The three shafts have a 12 m x 16 m (39 ft – 53 ft) cross sectional area and depths ranging from 45 m to 91 m (148 ft – 299 ft). The vibration limit for the shaft blasting was set at 10 mm/s ppv, with residential properties as close as 31 m (102 ft) and the existing M1 motorway 80 m (262 ft) away. The traffic volume for the M1 is 80,000 vehicles per day and Northconnex will provide an additional 100,000 vehicle capacity. "

The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. "Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of recoverable reserves of solid minerals, and iron ore concentrates - in the processing and consumption. To obtain concentrates, three main methods are used: dry and wet magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even their integration into complex developed schemes with finishing operations often do not solve the problem of obtaining high-quality concentrates, which are necessary for powder metallurgy and electric steelmaking. Increasing the iron content in the concentrate by removing harmful impurities is the goal of this work. The possibility of reducing the operations of wet magnetic separation twice and completely eliminating concentrating operations in ball mills from the scheme of operations has been established. Selective leaching agents for each type of iron ores have been created, allowing to obtain concentrates with an iron content of not less than 68-69% and negligible concentrations of harmful impurities. Methodical recommendations for long-term storage of bioreagents in the active state, their immobilization and preparation in industrial conditions at the enterprise Nedropolzovatelja are developed. The proposed biotechnology, which allows to obtain high quality iron and conditional concentrates for harmful impurities, is protected by patents (RU 2537684 ""Method for fine-tuning of high-sulfur magnetite concentrate"" for magnetite ores and Pat. RU 2599068. For the industrial implementation of the new technology, organizational and technological measures have been developed in the system with Road maps for types of ores. The developed technology makes it possible to condition noble metal, tin, tungsten, nickel and other concentrates in harmful impurities such as arsenic, antimony, mercury, sulfur, copper, zinc, iron, phosphorus, manganese, in total 30 components that pass into solution under the influence of bioreagents.INTRODUCTION Consumption of various metals is steadily increasing every year, the volume of mining is constantly increasing. Ores of ferrous metals traditionally make up the bulk of the recoverable reserves of solid minerals. Enrichment technologies for iron-containing ores are reduced to the combination of three main methods: wet and dry magnetic separation, gravity and flotation. But even the use of complex advanced technological schemes often does not lead to the production of high-quality concentrates suitable for metallurgical processing. In this case, either lapping operations or effective technical and technological solutions are used in the main enrichment cycle. Widely used in practice methods for improving the quality of iron ore concentrates include the use of finishing operations (fine screening, reverse cation flotation), staging of concentrates, the use of more sophisticated equipment (separators with running magnetic field, magnetic gravity classifiers, column flotation machines)."

The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. In spite of the widespread interest in rock bolt research, relatively little is known about the critical region surrounding the bolt anchor. In analyzing the stress distribution around an opening resulting from rock bolt support, it is commonly assumed that the bolt is fixed at a point far enough from the surface so that the anchor does not influence the performance of the bolt. Furthermore, a bolt anchor is assumed to per- form satisfactorily if it will hold the design load with a minimum amount of load relaxation, commonly called bleedoff. From the standpoint of the design engineer both of these assumptions are reasonable, but they ignore the fact that the extremely high stresses in the region of the anchor are capable of generating fractures in the rock. Lang estimated the bearing stresses for a slot and wedge anchor on a one-inch-diameter bolt to be as high as 125,000 psi. This paper describes a more thorough analysis of the magnitude of the stresses around the anchor and the nature of the potential fractures that might result.

Chalk and marble are two extremes among a wide variety of carbonate rocks including limestones, marls, travertine and other calcareous materials. We will deal mainly with the purest types of natural calcium carbonates which are widely used today in many industrial applications.

Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

A graphical method has been developed for the evaluation of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Act Noise Exposure Index and the Equivalent Continuous Sound Level. The method makes use of a noise survey form and a mechanical integrator with two sliders, and is less tedious and susceptible to error than alternative methods. The graphical method is adaptable to various codes for noise exposure and may be used with any instrument that measures noise level. One example of its application to a practical situation in a Canadian mine is given to demonstrate the procedure .

Two case studies are presented in this paper. The first one discusses a roller compacted concrete water supply dam that was constructed in El Mauro in Chile to provide water for agriculture activities downstream of a copper mine during the dry season. The 23 m high dam used a bituminous geomembrane (BGM) as the low permeability upstream facing element on the dam to control seepage through the dam. This is the first time that a BGM has been used in this application. A deep cut-off trench was used to control seepage beneath the dam and through the abutments. This paper briefly presents the design of the dam, including selection of the concrete mix and maximum aggregate size that the use of the Coletanche BGM allowed, and provides details of the construction, quality control and assurance of the installation of the BGM. An ultrasonic apparatus was used as part of the quality control on the BGM seams.The second case study discusses a tailings dam in Cerro Lindo, Peru (near Chincha), where a watertight BGM was installed on the upstream face. Results are presented of the survey done by a consultant on the behaviour of the dam and in particular of the BGM following an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 in Chincha close to the site. These findings on-site were checked by trials in a laboratory in California. Test results are given and explained.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015. (4.5%).The Gresik Copper Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from 660,000 tpy of copper concentrates supplied 100% by 'Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport, Indonesia in West Papua (former Irian Jaya). Other by products are 600,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 30,000 tpy of gypsum, 509 tpy of precious metal slime and 400,000 tpy of granulated slag. These are sold to domestic and international markets.This project adopted the Mitsubishi Continuous Copper Smelting and Converting Process in the Smelter for anode casting, Contilanod process comprising Hazelett twin belt caster and a Mannesmann's travelling shear were selected. ISA stainless steel cathode process is applied in refinery. The combination of contilanod anode and stainless steel cathode ensured good cathode quality from the very beginning of start-up SO2 gas generated from Smelter is treated by Lurgi-Mitsubishi double contact/absorption acid plant. All contact. wastewater from the plant is treated in multistage wastewater treatment plant.Electricity and oxygen are ·supplied ""over the fence"" by a company which is located in the site of the Gresik Smelter and Refinery."

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

Wear mechanisms of two commercial aluminum alloys, namely a spray formed and extruded Al-25%Si alloy, and a sand cast A390 alloy (18.5 %Si) that are known to be successful in cylinder bore technology were studied to have a better understanding of the requirements for wear resistant aluminum alloy design. From durability point of view these alloys are known to be successful for engine bore applications. It is interesting to compare the wear mechanisms in these alloys because they have significantly different silicon content and microstructures, and were produced using different techniques. The wear tests were done using a block-on-ring configuration, in controlled air atmospheres (5 % relative humidity). In spite of the differences in silicon content and microstructure, the wear mechanisms were similar and consisted of formation and destruction of hard tribolayers that are either formed by either mechanical or chemical interactions on contact surfaces. The differences in the wear rates between the two alloys arose from the differences in the hardness of the worn surfaces, and the alloy's ability to sustain the tribolayers on the worn surfaces.
