Simon (until March 1972). Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of nineteen, and the standing committees held 27 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts which are attached to this report show an excess of income over expenditure of R21 519. It is very gratifying to be able to report that Council's efforts to stop the depletion of our accumulated funds are meeting with success. The most important contributors to our surplus this year are symposia and colloquia, sales of publications, Company Affiliate subscriptions and the profit on the journal. While we do not expect continued profits from all these sources in the future we do feel that we are now in the process of accumulating a substantial financial foundation. This will give the Council the necessary confidence to initiate the new developments in the activities of the Institute which are now under consideration. The decision to create a new grade of membership, Company Affiliate, is dealt with elsewhere in this report. There has been a generous initial response from companies and this is the cornerstone of our improved financial expectations. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R91 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 502. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year from R9 160 to RH 331, which is R2 134 in excess of the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to RH 529 compared with R23 010 a year ago. MEMBERSHIP Sixteen Fellows, twenty Members, six Graduates, nine Associates, twelve Students and twenty-four Company Affiliates were elected during the year. One Member and two Associates were reinstated. Twelve members were admitted to retired membership. Transfers: Member to Fellow, three. Graduate to Member, seven Associate to Fellow, one. As recorded above, 24 companies had joined by the end of the year and many further applications have been received since. We extend a hearty welcome to all our new members. Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. Equilibrium studies on the extraction of nickel and cobalt with kerosine solutions of naphthenic acid have shown that an exchange extraction reaction occurs at pH 5.5. The nickel/cobalt separation factor is constant at 1.8 for constant total metal molarity and varying nickel/cobalt ratios. The separation factor decreases with increasing total metal molarity in the organic phase beyond 0.2 M and also decreases with increasing temperature. From the equilibrium data, it has been possible to derive a mathematical model for the separation of nickel from cobalt by exchange extraction in multistage systems. Experimental data from a continuously operated multistage mixer/settler apparatus has shown a reasonable correspondence with computer-calculated data. The effective separation of nickel and cobalt in sulfate solution remains a problem in hydrometallurgy and the hope that this would be solved by solvent extraction has not yet been fulfilled. With chloride solutions, advantage may be taken of the ability of cobalt to form anionic complexes with the chloride ion. It can then be readily separated from nickel, which does not form stable chloro complexes, by extraction with a suitable long chain amine. However, in hydro metallurgical operations, sulfate solutions are generally obtained in which no extractable anionic species are present. Thus, the possibility of using cationic extractants must be considered, and in this paper attention is directed to the use of carboxylic acids. The method of separation studied has been termed exchange extraction, which involves replacement of a metal in the organic phase with a more acidic metal in the aqueous phase. Thus, (BR2).+ (Az+)aqt=(AR,).+ (B2+)aq (I) where metal A is more acidic than metal B, R represents the acidic radical derived from the acid RH, and the subscripts e and aq refer to the organic and aqueous phases, respectively. Ashbrook and Ritcey' have used this method for the separation of cobalt from nickel using the sodium salt of di-2 ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid, which preferentially extracts cobalt. Some nickel is coextracted, and this is removed by exchange with cobalt ions in the feed solution by suitable countercurrent operation in a pulsed column. Much work has been carried out by a number of workers in Russia on the general use of exchange extraction for the separation of metal ions using car-boxylic acids. Gindin et aL a have demonstrated that this technique could be applied to the separation of nickel from cobalt using a C--C. carboxylic acid and have applied the technique to the production of high purity cobalt solutions for electrolysis. Further worka was concerned with the development of a process for the separation of nickel from cobalt in a pulsed column. This system permitted the separation of iron and copper from nickel and cobalt in one system. The procedure involved center feeding with acid backwashing at the top and alkali addition lower down the column. Thus the system operated under a pH gradient and the metals were distributed in the column in the order of their basicities. A similar application was studied by Gel'perin et al,4,5 for the removal of copper and iron impurities from a nickel anolyte by means of a C10-C,12 fatty acid fraction. Ginden et al,' and Fletcher and Wilson' have studied the effect of pH on the extraction of a number of metals with carboxylic acids. These studies showed that metals such as iron, copper, lead, zinc, nickel cobalt, and manganese are extracted at pH values close to the pH of hydroxide precipitation. Nickel is extracted at a slightly lower pH than cobalt and thus the nickel/cobalt separation factor has a value not much greater than 1. More basic work on complex identification has been reported by Fletcher and Flett: by Tanaka; and Jay-cock and Jones." These studies have suggested that at low loadings in the organic phase, the nickel and cobalt carboxylates appear to be dimeric and solvated by free carboxylic acid molecules. As the concentration of metal in the organic phase increases, the complex changes and larger polymeric species are formed. "In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

Barge traffic on the Nation's inland waterways over the past 15 years has been increasing at a rate much faster than intercity freight traffic by all modes, largely due to the growing consumption of mineral commodities, development of more powerful towboats and large and more specialized barges, improvements to loading and unloading facilities, and competition among bargelines for contract shipment of bulk commodities. The Bureau of Mines, in a study to determine barge traffic projections for inland waterways in the South-Central States to the year 1980, gathered data on origin-destination patterns by commodity, quantity moved, equipment used, and rates charged; the trend of each of these factors over time; and the extent of competition between water trans-port and other means of transportation. The Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which together carryover half the Nation's barge traffic, are major carriers of coal, crude petroleum, steel, marine shells, sulfur, salt, cement, and alumina. Greater quantities of these products will be transported by barge; however, oil pipe-lines and unit trains for coal are expected to limit increased barge traffic of these two commodities. Increasing quantities of fertilizer materials will be transported upstream. Although congestion at certain locks is a current problem, the Mississippi River below St. Louis and other open-river stretches have the capacity to handle the increasing number of barges for the foreseeable future.

Modem civilization is indebted to that most ancient of the skilled crafts - the art of stone working, as the one consistent means whereby the dim un-recorded past has conveyed to our modem schools of science volumns of facts, written in characters of imperishable stone. Although left, centuries ago, to ruin and decay, architectural examples of the ancient building crafts still remain to the glory of the old master-builders, whose accomplishments in that remote age continue to influence and inspire their modem successors. Present-day architects and builders will leave to posterity just as faithful a record of our modes of living and of the methods now adopted for protection, as if it had been made by written word; and our craftsmen have profited greatly, in meeting modem requirements, by taking advantage of the indurance and utility of stone. Stone in all ages and stages of the world's civilization and development has been the material chosen by the masterbuilder, the one material possessing qualities that render it most desirable in affecting the artistic ideals of each period. It perfects the science of architecture through its durability and thus renders possible the study of man's workmanship in stone throughout periods of civilization of which we have no specific written account. Other materials have been used for the construction of man's habitations, but none have withstood the test of time, nor have established the credit of designer and builder so well as stone. _All other materials fall into ruin and decay, leaving neither mark nor monument for the enlightenment of mankind.

Inertisation is used to enhance the safety of underground mine areas either to avoid the potential for a combustion event or to stabilize a situation after an ignition, fire or heating. The primary objective of a recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study was to review coal mine inertisation and in particular to focus on use of the Polish mine fire simulation software Ventgraph to gain better understanding of how various inertisation units interact with the complex ventilation behavior underground during a substantial fire. Critical aspects targeted for examination under the project grant included location of the unit for high priority fire positions, size of borehole or pipe range required, time required for inertisation output to interact with and extinguish a fire, effects of seam gases on fire behavior with inertisation present and main fan management. A major accomplishment of the project has been to take findings from the simulation exercises to develop inertisation related modifications to the Ventgraph fire simulation program in conjunction with the Polish program authors. Selected mines were ?evaluated or audited?as to the ability to deliver inert gases generated from GAG units to high priority underground fire locations .A coding system has been developed and many potential underground mine fire sources cannot be successfully inertized with the GAG docked at the current specified point; this is particularly so for fires in extended areas of workings or in panels. There is a limit to the ability of the GAG jet engine to deliver exhaust down smaller dimension borehole. There is a need to examine the use of the GAG for production or proactive uses in a wider application in Australian mines responding to recovering from mine fires, spontaneous combustion heating?s, elimination of the potential explosibility of newly sealed gobs or inert mines or mine sections on closure. Some of the current uses of low flow inertisation facilities could be more effectively undertaken with the GAG unit.

YOU can place an exclamation point after the "and How" if you want to, but the way it stands it sum¬marizes the Mining Geology sessions quite nicely; "Why" in the morning, "How" in the afternoon. It is altogether fitting that Prof. McLaughlin and Reno Sales, who have themselves achieved enviable reputations in company work, should have led the program by presenting informally a chapter from the volume dedicated to the beloved dean of all economic geologists, Waldemar Lindgren. In opening the morning session, over which Sydney Ball presided, Donald McLaughlin emphasized the continuous role mining geology should play in operating technique. He pointed out the importance of structural relations in a broad sense, and the preponderant role they play in developing the manner of ore occurrences. He illustrated this by an account of the work at Homestake, using slides to show the stratigraphic sequence, the folding, and the orebodies of that camp. An interesting piece of detail was the distinction they found could be made be¬tween the chlorite near the ore masses, and that in the country rocks. Whether the cummingtonite, characteristic of the rock in which the ore is found, is of regional or of contact metamorphic origin caused some discussion. Dr. Lindgren inclined to the belief that it was contact, but L. C. Graton replied that they had found the weight of evidence was for a hydrothermal origin. D. F. Hewett raised the question as to whether, in the advancing development of the mining industry, there was still a place for the U. S. Survey geologist, and the consensus seemed to be that there should be. His role is changing from that of mapping mining districts in detail, now the task of the companies, towards a more general serving of the industry through the wider perspective his work gives him in contradistinction to the greater detail of knowledge accumulated by the resident geologist.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a procedure for the design of an arch canopy for use in rehabilitating a high-roof-fall area. Only dy-namic line loading of an unbackfilled arch canopy at its crown is considered, and the procedure does not account for an asymmetrical loading condition. The evaluation of whether an arch canopy is suitable for a particular installation depends on many variables, including in-mine conditions and the engineering properties of the structure. However, a general evaluation can be based on a comparison of the arch's maximum crown deflection and a prescribed allowable crown deflection. The design procedure is based on the concept that when an arch canopy is sub-jected to impact loading at its crown and deflects from its unloaded state to maximum crown deflection, the structure absorbs strain energy, both elastic and plastic. As a result, this strain energy can be calculated from a static load-displacement diagram for the structure. The significance of this design procedure is that it gives mine personnel an analytical tool to select an arch canopy to meet the dimensional and functional requirements of a mine entry and a prescribed allowable crown deflection.

Wheel loaders are currently being used in many mining applications for a variety of reasons. While they sometimes provide the lowest loading cost, a primary advantage of the wheel loader versus other loading systems is the increased versatility and mobility inherent in a wheeled vehicle. The advent of large wheel loaders with much greater digging capability enhanced wheel loader usage in severe loading applications. To match these severe conditions, machines offered today were designed to work in these rocky conditions. Soon after the introduction of large wheel loaders into rocky conditions, however, it became apparent to many users that tire costs could at times account for up to 50% of total hourly operating costs on large wheel loaders. In some applications, tire costs alone pushed wheel loader economics beyond the economic feasibility for these jobs, prohibiting their use. In an effort to combat high tire costs, several attempts have been made to put fast moving steel around the tires to provide a strong interface between vehicle and ground. Some earlier attempts involved wrapping tracks around tires. Mechanical difficulties with these systems limited their customer acceptance. Subsequently, the development of protective tire chains came into favor. While tire chains offered added protection to the tires, the cost and maintenance of the chains remains a problem in 1972, the Dystred arrangement was announced for usage on a 6 cu yd wheel loader from Caterpillar Tractor Co. (See Figure 1). The Dystred offered the advantages of greatly increased tread life over conventional tires, as well as resistance to tread puncture in most situations. The arrangement basically employed a track system similar to that used on track type loaders. Pin and bushing wear often caused high hourly operating costs and excessive machine downtime. In addition, the connection of shoes through the use of links, pins, and bushings forced a limitation on too speed of the vehicle.

Nonliving waste biomass consisting of Aspergillus niger attached to wheat bran was used as a biosorbent for the removal of copper and zinc from aqueous solutions. Copper and zinc uptake by the biomass obeyed Langmuir isotherms. The binding capacity of the biomass for copper was found to be higher than that for zinc. The metal uptake, expressed in milligrams per grain of biomass, was found to be a function of: •the initial metal concentration (with the uptake decreasing with increasing initial concentration), •the biomass loading (with the uptake decreasing with increasing biomass loading) and •pH (with the uptake increasing with increasing pH in the range of L5 and 6.0). The metal uptake was significantly affected in the presence of a co-ion. The uptake of copper by the biomass decreased in the presence of zinc and vice versa. The decrease in metal uptake was dependent on the concentrations of metals in the two-component aqueous solutions. The effect of copper on zinc uptake was more pronounced than the effect of zinc on copper uptake.

Over the last decade heap leaching with a cement binder has allowed the economical leaching of low grade gold ores of less than 2 grams/tonne. Despite the continued use of cement as an agglomeration aid, numerous leaching operations continue to experience channelling and blinding problems. This paper describes the development of polymeric agglomeration aids, Extract Ore 9760 and 9960, which when used as a partial cement or lime replacement can result in a higher rate of and/or a higher total gold recovery in plant evaluations. Extract Ore in combination with cement acts to produce a stronger agglomerate which results in reduced fines migration during leaching and helps prevent blinding of the heap. Both of these changes will give a more even flow of cyanide solution throughout the heap and improve solution contact efficiency within the ore. Polymeric agglomeration aid programs are now being used by heap leaching operations in three different countries. A summary of benefits identified at some of these operations are presented in this paper.

Two types of ore deposit provide the bulk of the world nickel production. They are the hypogene magmatic massive sulfide deposits and the supergene lateritic deposits. Platinum group elements (PGE) are also extracted from magmatic sulfide deposits. Recent sky-rocketing price of palladium has prompted the mineral industry to seek alternative resources. In such a manner has emerged the Lac-des-Iles type of target, a very low sulfide-bearing bulk tonnage type of deposit. Furthermore, unconventional (e.g. non-magmatic) types of deposit are now sought more intensively (Wilde et al., 2003). Considering both this trend of the PGE Industry, and that only a few magmatic deposits account significantly for the world nickel production, someone may wonder if a diversification of the hypogene nickel resources base would not be needed in the near future. Laterites are residual deposits developed on ultramafic rock under wet tropical climate. Are all ultramafic protoliths equal to generate high-grade lateritic deposit? Are some preweathering processes important to generate favourable ultramafic protoliths? The mineralogical heterogeneity of some ?dry? lateritic nickel deposits renders their ore beneficiation difficult. Is the type of nickel-bearing mineral found in the protolith a significant factor influencing the laterite heterogeneity? To contribute to answer all these questions, we have undertaken a research project on the nickel occurrences of the southern Quebec serpentinite belts. Why choosing this specific region for such a project? First because, due to continuous mining of asbestos ore since 1870, the serpentinite belts of this region are among the best exposed and studied in the world. Secondly, this region host a complete spectrum of nickel deposits that have been described before in the scientific literature. Furthermore, this region is slightly to moderately metamorphosed which make it perfectly suited to study the departure from magmatic nickeliferous paragenesis through various metamorphic conditions. As a matter of fact two orogenic events affected this region, the Taconian, in Ordovician time, and the Acadian during the Devonian. The magnitude and the timing of these dynamo-metamorphic events vary considerably through the region (Gauthier et al., 1994). These variations are now well constrained due to precise age dating.

A new classification of eutectics is proposed, based on tlze entvopies of wzelting of the tuio eutectic phases. Experimental confir?nation loas obtained for the theovetical shape of the lamellar solid-liquid interface, fov the fault mechanisms of lanzellar spacing changes, and for the development of low-energy solid-solid boundaries between the lamellae. An explanation is presented to account jov the irvegular and coinplex regular structures zrhich are found in some eritectic systems. FrOM experimental observations, single-phase materials can be divided into two groups according to their solidification characteristics, those that grow as faceted crystals and those that do not. acksonl' showed from thermodynamic reasoning that the type of growth depended on a factor a which was almost thg entropy of melting. Most nonmetals have high entropies of melting (a greater than 2) and grow with crystalline facets. Most metals have low entropies of melting (CY less than 2) and grow almost isotropically with no facets. The authors propose that eutectics may be classified in a similar manner. There are three groups of eutectics, those in which both phases have low entropies of melting, those in which one phase has a high and the other phase has a low entropy of melting, and those in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Lamellar or rodlike structures are formed in systems in which both phases have low entropies of melting. In these alloys dendrites of either phase may be formed, when the alloy is rich in the relevant component. Examples are Pb-Sn, Sn-Cd, Pb-Cd, Sn-Zn, Al-Zn. Irregular, Fig. 14((), or complex regular, Fig. 14(b), structures are formed in alloys in which one phase has a high entropy of melting and the other has a low entropy of melting. Examples are A1-Si, Zn-MgzZnll, Pb-Bi, Sn-Bi. When the alloys are rich in the low entropy of melting phase, dendrites are formed; when the alloys are rich in the high entropy of melting phase, faceted primary crystals are produced. These crystals are sometimes called hoppers or pseudodendrites. In this work the term dendrite will only be used to describe nonfaceted primary crystals. Dendrites are not formed during solidification in high entropy of melting single-phase materials. The third group of eutectics includes alloys in which both phases have high entropies of melting. Each phase grows with a faceted solid-liquid interface. Since most metals do not have high entropies of melting, metallic examples in this eutectic group are rare. However they may occur between some intermetallics and semiconductors or semimetals such as silicon, germanium, and bismuth. Attempts have been made to study eutectic solidification visually by watching the growth process.374 Since metals are not transparent, the observations had to be made on external surfaces. This difficulty can be overcome by using transparent analogs of the metallic systems. As was mentioned earlier, most single-phase compounds have entropies of melting greater than 2 and so grow as faceted crystals. Recently organic materials with entropies of melting less than 2 were investigated.' These materials grow in exactly the same way as the low entropy of melting metals. When the materials are pure, they grow with a solid-liquid interface parallel to an isotherm; when they are impure, cells or dendrites are formed. Since these materials are transparent, have low melting points, and even have cubic structures, they should be ideal for making up transparent analogs of the metallic eutectics. The purpose of the present work was to investigate these organic eutectics and to see whether this quite different series of eutectics could be classified in the same way as the metallic systems. The observations made on the organic alloys are also discussed with reference to the current theories of lamellar growth. Explanations are proposed to account for the structures formed in the other eutectic groups. EXPERIMENTAL Thin cells containing the organic alloys were uni-direction ally solidified on a specially constructed microscope stage.' Uniform growth rates were obtained by moving the cells, with a motor drive, through a fixed temperature gradient, so that the solid-liquid interface remained stationary with respect to the microscope objective lens. The cells were made by fusing two microscope cover slides 7/8 by 7/8 by 1/100 in. together on three sides, leaving a gap of 1 to 3 mils between the slides, and these were filled by surface tension. A preliminary investigation of the phase diagram between two components could be made very rapidly. One side of the cell was filled with component A and the other side with component B. Since only a small amount of mixing could occur every composition from pure A to pure B was present in the cell. When the cell was placed in the temperature gradient a pictorial representation of the phase diagram was obtained. Eutectics, peritectics, "interorganics", and solid -solid transformations could be readily detected. Fig. 1 shows part of a eutectic phase diagram. The Sample was first grown slowly then stopped. Titanium and vanadium form a complete series of solid solutions at temperatures above 885°C. Below 885°C, vanadium is slightly soluble in a titanium (about 1.5 pct V at 650°C) and a two-phase a plus ß region extends to 18.5 pct V at 650°C. The alloys up to 15.0 pct V transform into a supersaturated a solid solution upon rapid cooling from the ß phase. Above 15 pct V the ß phase may be retained. The temperature at which the ß to a' martensite-type transformation takes place decreases steadily from 850°C for 0.5 pct V to 325°C for 12.7 pct V. IN the transition series of the periodic table, the six elements that have a body-centered cubic structure at all temperatures, namely chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, columbium, tungsten, and tantalum, fulfill the conditions required for the existence of complete series of solid solutions with the high temperature (ß) form of titanium. Up to the present time, complete solubility at temperatures above the a to ß transformation of titanium has been observed in the systems Ti-MO,1,2 Ti-Cb,2 Ti-W,³ and Ti-Ta.³ The two remaining elements, vanadium and chromium, have atomic diameters which are not as near that of titanium as the atomic diameters of the four other elements. Both are smaller than titanium and the difference, expressed in percentage of the titanium atomic diameter, is 12.3 pct for chromium and 8.2 pct for vanadium. On this basis, the least favorable conditions for solid-solution formation are therefore encountered in the Ti-Cr system. The early work on the Ti-Cr system4 revealed that up to about 1100°C the solubility of chromium in ß titanium is limited, and an intermetallic phase exists near the stoichiometric composition TiCr2. It was found later' that a continuous series of solid solutions extends across the diagram at higher temperatures, and TiCr2 forms by solid state reaction. It became apparent therefore that complete solubility would also be present in the Ti-V system. The present investigation confirms this possibility. The iodide-refined titanium used in this investigation was purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., New York. According to the manufacturer, a typical analysis of this product is 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb. The Vickers hardness number (10 kg load) of the crystalline bar varies between 55 and 80. The vanadium metal was purchased from the Westinghouse Electric Corp., Lamp Div., Bloomfield, N. J. The purity of this metal is probably above 99 pct V. The oxygen content must have been quite low, since a bar about 1/4 in. square could be cold rolled into a ribbon 0.020 in. thick. To prepare the various alloys on the titanium-rich side of the diagram, the titanium rod was machined into cups 1 cm in diam and about 1.5 cm high. Pieces of vanadium, of the proper weight, were cut from the square bars and placed within the cups prior to melting. 1. Introductory Some members may recall that at the Annual Meeting two years ago I read a paper, 'The Future of the Mining Industry in Canada." Discussing this large subject it was possible only to outline the facts and inferences leading to ?the conclusion that Canada is a country endowed with enormous mineral wealth, of which the fringes are yet scarcely touched. In the present paper, I wish to examine in somewhat fuller detail the evidence, both direct and inferential, concerning the mineral wealth of the greatest physical and geological feature of Canada-the Precambrian Shield. Many, if not most, of these facts are already familiar to you. But, since they will form the basis of the reasoning employed, they will be recalled for explicit reference. First, let us review very briefly the position and extent of the Shield. The area of the entire Shield is given in textbooks as 2,000,000 square miles, of which perhaps 10 or 12 per cent. is exposed in the south-easterly part of Canada's Arctic islands. The remainder occupies roughly two-thirds of the North-west Territory; the north-east corner of Alberta; one-third of Saskatchewan ;two-thirds of Manitoba; three-fourths of Ontario; and nearly ninety-five per cent. of Quebec.

Crystalline silica (quartz, cristobalite, and tridyrnite) is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) because of its potential for causing debilitating but nonmalignant lung diseases. In 1987, the International Agency for Research Against Cancer (IARC) conducted a review of the health literature and concluded that crystalline silica was a probable human carcinogen. As a result of this finding, OSHA was required to regulate crystalline silica under its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). The standard requires that all materials handled by OSHA-regulated facilities be labeled according to the requirements of RCS and that workers receive proper training on the handling of the material if the crystalline silica content equals or exceeds 0.1 weight percent (0.1 %). MSHA currently is considering enacting its own RCS. This will be similar to OSHA's RCS. If the standard is enacted, most mineral producers will have to determine the respirable monitor filter and bulk crystalline silica contents of their ores and products so that workers and/or customers will know whether they are in compliance with the 0.1% HCS and/or the OSHA permissible exposure level (PEL) of 50 µg for an 8-hour workday for respirable crystalline silica as determined from monitor samples. Two major concerns with the RCS are the widespread occurrence of crystalline silica in nature and the suitability of current technology for routinely determining crystalline silica concentrations at the 0.1 % RCS level. Most ores are extracted from silica-bearing deposits and it is a common constituent of rocks and soils. OSHA's RCS will have the greatest impact on the producers of crushed stone, diatomite, dimension stone, gravel, industrial sand, perlite, pumice, pyrophyllite, sand, and talc because these materials frequently are shipped directly from the mill to the customer. MSHA's RCS would affect nearly all mineral producers. Those producers that have crystalline silica present in concentrations near the 0.1 % cutoff point will have the most difficulty with the analysis. Crystalline silica can be quantified at the 0.1 % level by X-ray diffractometry in simple systems containing one, two, and possibly three minerals if (1) none of the accessory minerals has X-ray diffraction reflections that coincide or overlap with those of crystalline silica and (2) the standard has a particle size distribution and crystallinity similar to those of the sample. In some instances, it may not be possible to determine the crystalline silica content of a sample with any degree of certainty using the recommended regulatory protocol. In all cases, it is recommended that a qualified mineralogist identify the minerals in a sample prior to any regulatory analysis. Additionally, the uncertainty as to whether some silica polymorphs should be classified as crystalline or noncrystalline and the suitability of metastable high-temperature standards, such as cristobalite and tridyrnite, for regulatory analysis at ambient temperatures should be addressed further. This overview is written both to highlight these problems and to serve as a guide for analysts, regulators, and industry personnel who are involved in the crystalline silica issue. It also covers some of the difficulties and/or shortcomings in quantifying crystalline silica, such as the ubiquitous mineral quartz, in the workplace.

The purpose of this study is to develop designs to facilitate and accelerate auger rotation stoppage (and auger rotation start up so as to promote auger disengagement during auger miner repositioning) and to provide a time delay and warning signal prior to auger start up to permit any miner s near the augers to get away from the augers before they start rotating. In the underground coal mines in the U.S., there are four auger miners that are currently in use. They are the Jeffrey 100L (see Figure 1-1) and 100M (see Figure 1-2), and the Wilcox WCM and the MK20A (see Figure 1-3).

Mining is essential for facilitating human development particularly as demand for critical minerals grows. However, over the mine life cycle, the environment is permanently changed. Once mining ceases, mine-affected land can leave significant legacy issues on the surrounding environment if not managed. Therefore, mine closure planning is critical. Mine closure occurs over large scales often with the aim of recreating resilient ecosystems over mined landscapes with mitigated negative impacts. The natural state of the landscape and the environmental risks over planning time-scales are largely driven by climate. Climate change is expected to impact different parts of the post-mining landscape, from stable landform design (soil erosion mitigation) to revegetation efforts and pit lake management. Consequently, mine closure plans may need to account for a non-stationary and uncertain future climate, that may be both different to the current climate and evolve during the mine life and post-closure. Here a new data-based approach is presented for incorporating climate change projections in mine closure planning, based on the recently released Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) climate data used in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment report. The approach: (i) characterises closure-related attributes of the future climate, and (ii) identifies the amount (and direction) of change expected to occur, and its uncertainty, focusing on five metrics for demonstrative purposes and initially describing changes in erosive potential below. This provides information on the type of future environment (ie the changing baseline) that mine closure should plan towards, and identifies rehabilitation options that may be susceptible to increased risks from climate change.

A review was made of two Russian books and a chapter from a third book dealing with pipeline transport of coal. Emphasis was placed on hydrotransport of coarse coal in underground mines or surface pipelines. The books reviewed were: "Means of Increasing the Effectiveness of Hydrotransport," by V. N. Pokrovskaya (1972), "Parameters and Modes of Hydraulic Transport of Coal" by V. V. Traynis (1970), and the chapter "Calculations of Hydrotransport of Useful Minerals and Waste Rock" from the book "Hydromechanization of Opencast Workings" by G. A. Nurok (1970). All three are unique and useful additions to the world literature on hydrotransport. The Traynis book reveals the development and results of circular wheel stand tests to simulate hydrotransport in horizontal pipes, which is a potentially outstanding contribution to slurry pipeline technology. Graphical data and equations are presented which suggest that headlosses for coarse coal can be predicted with good accuracy for pipe sizes up to 14 inches in diameter. Wheel stands permit tests for pipe wear and lump degradation without recycling coal through pumps. Recommendations are made for wheel stand tests and for correlation of existing data.
