This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research projects programmed for fiscal year 1984 by the Bureau of Mines under its Conservation and Development activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties to gain insight into projects of the Bureau's Conservation and Development research program. The objective of the Conservation and Development Program is to provide the technological advances needed to stimulate the mining of domestic deposits containing critical, strategic, and other essential minerals in compliance with existing regulations and at costs sufficiently low to be competitive in world markets. Research efforts are directed toward improving the fundamental understanding of processes and procedures involved in the production of minerals. The overall goals will be accomplished by investigating alternative mining methods to increase domestic production of critical and strategic minerals from low-grade deposits; expanding the technology for the economic and efficient extraction of minerals consistent with cost-effective compliance with environmental regulations; and advancing the technologies needed to insure an adequate supply of coal.

Currently produced zinc-enriched blast furnace dust is stored on site at CORUS IJmuiden. To end this practise, a research program was started in 1996. Four technologies were studied: oxidative autoclave leaching in a chloride medium, fluid bed pyrohydrochloridisation (pyrohydrolysis) to yield lead-zinc-free (hematite) calcine, EAF (plasma) smelting/zinc fuming, and incorporation of the dust in 'iron foundry cupola charges. All aim to remove zinc and lead, recycle the iron residue internally, and produce a saleable zinc-lead product.

"Summary: Fibroblast proliferation and enhancement of collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The current investigation presents a fibroblast proliferation assay to detect the release of competence factors from pneumocytes. The specific objective of this study was to define cell culture conditions for fibroblasts that would allow selective detection of competence factors in test media. The results indicate the following: (a) fibroblasts should be cultured for 2 days in plasma-free medium rather than 2% plasma to assure complete quiescence; (b) 1% plasma was optimum for producing progression activity for the bioassay of a competence factor, while 0.5% plasma did not produce sufficient progression activity (yielding false negatives) and 2% plasma often contained significant competence activity (yielding false positives); and (c) fresh plasma should be used since the progression activity of plasma was adversely affected by freezing and thawing. Under these conditions, this bioassay can be employed with either rat or human lung fibroblasts to detect competence factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), at levels as low as 25 ng/ml.Fibrotic lung disease, as a consequence of occupational exposure to silica dust. is characterized by the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung and the progressive loss of pulmonary diffusion capacity. Proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and enhanced synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis ( 1 ). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (2). Some cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation by activating specific phases of the cell cycle (3,4). In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (G0 ) cells into the G1 phase of the cell cycle (5). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P). on the other hand, regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from G 1 into the S phase (5,6). These two classes of cytokines have been termed competence and progression factors, respectively. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which quiescent fibroblasts are exposed to culture supematants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum (FCS), which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (7-9). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using platelet-poor .plasma [lacking competence factor(s)] as a substitute for FCS bas been described (I 0, 11 ). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors."

Iron containing leach residues like jarosite and goethite from electrolytic zinc production contain many valuable metals and harmful substances. These metals and substances should be removed in order to obtain an acceptable, stable and reusable product, and maximize economic feasibility as well as minimize environmental footprint. In this work, the processing of jarosite leach residue was studied in laboratory scale experiments under oxidizing and reducing conditions at high temperatures. First, the pretreated material was melted and oxidized to produce a melt of metal oxides. Second, the oxide melt was reduced in CO–CO2 atmosphere. Target after the reduction step was to obtain a clean slag and a liquid metal or speiss phase that collects the valuable metals, such as silver. The kinetics of the thermal processing were studied for determining optimal times and conditions for the aforementioned process steps. The preliminary results show that the process is thermodynamically feasible, and the desired phases can be obtained in the experimental conditions investigated.

"INTRODUCTION The surface areas of the finest fractions of a pulverized material are disproportionately larger than their weights. For instance, Pesrott and Kinney 3/ showed that, in a sample of minus 200-mesh coal, particles that are about 2 microns in diameter represent 15 percent of the entire surface area but only 1.5 percent of the total weight. Because the sur- face area is the dominating factor in the behavior of finely divided materials in many practical processes, the role of the finest particles is of great importance. The oxidation and combustion of pulverized coal, both in the dry form and in suspension in oils, and the hydrogenation to fluid hydrocarbons of mixtures of pulverized coal and heavy oil are reactions in which the surface area of the coal particles has considerable influence. This investigation of the size distribution of fine coal particles was conducted with the hope that such processes would thereby be better understood. The results should also be of value in the study of the crushing and fracture of coal."

Atmospheric processing of nickel lateritic ores with low costs has been encouraged. In this work the kinetic of atmospheric acid leaching of a northern- Brazilian ore with 1.63% Ni and large amount of fine particles (d50 ≈ 0.075 mm and 40% below 0.038 mm) is presented. Chemical analysis showed a trend of Ni and Fe concentration in finer fraction (−0.075 mm) and Si and Mg in the coarsest one (−0.500 + 0.150 mm) associated to distinct mineral phases. Nickel is widespread in the mineral matrix. Distinct behaviors were observed as a function of particle size associated to the distribution of silicates and iron oxides in the ore. The kinetic modeling indicated that leaching is controlled by porous layer diffusion at 65 °C, but at 95 °C exhibits a mixed control by porous layer diffusion in initial minutes (60 min) and by chemical reaction or diffusion through the pore layer in final minutes (60–240 min) depends on metal evaluated.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Otago Schist belt of southern New Zealand hosts widespread orogenic gold deposits. Erosion of these orogenic gold deposits has led to the formation of numerous placer deposits distributed across and beyond the host schist belt. Numerical modelling of crustal scale deformation and geomorphic evolution has defined the key tectonic features that have controlled the severance of detrital gold deposits from their sources. Tectonic activity over the past 20 million years, during development of the modern Pacific-Australian plate boundary, has severed links between some placers and their sources. Detrital gold was transported south from the Otago Schist source region in two different river systems in the Miocene. Mesozoic orogenic gold deposits shed gold into rivers that flowed to the south. These rivers were terminated by the rise of north-west-trending basement ridges at the boundary between weak schist crust and strong greywacke crust, and the ridges were controlled by pre-existing faults at that rheological boundary. In contrast, rising mountains close to the developing plate boundary in the Miocene were the locus of new orogenic gold deposits hosted in extensional faults. These gold deposits were rapidly exhumed and contributed detrital gold to orogen-parallel Miocene rivers that flowed to the south-west. Pleistocene deformation on mainly north-west and north-east orientations, and associated river capture, has severed the links between these Miocene orogenic deposits and downstream detrital gold.CITATION:Craw, D and Upton, P, 2015. The diamond industry is no newcomer to High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) as it has used the technology for more than 20 years, predominantly in secondary crushing and recrushing roles. In fact it could be argued that the diamond industry has led the way for the wider minerals industry to consider its application. In existing conventional secondary cone crushing applications, large valuable diamonds are" won" through meticulously managing the recovery process within defined particle size ranges. Conventional crushers operate with relatively large closed side settings, but have the potential to damage diamonds by making direct contact with the sides of the crusher. Cone crushers also result in steep product size distributions that run a high risk of losing many of the smaller, unliberated but more abundant diamonds from the rock. This current comminution paradigm of particle size reduction management results in recrushing processing applications or plants where HPGRs are often used.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio 2. Triaxial compressive strength 3. Brazilian tensile strength 4. Modulus of rupture 5. Kuroko deposit is a stratabound massive sulphide and sulphate deposit associated with Miocene submarine volcanics and has been considered to be a prototype of meta- morphosed Palaeozoic and Precambrian equivalents. Since the discovery of Uchinotai deposit of the Kosaka mine in 1959, Dowa and other mining companies have conducted intensive exploration work in the Hokuroku district of northeastern Japan. Dowa has been placing its first priority on the exploration of Kuroko deposits and made a series of remarkable successes in finding the Kuroko deposits, i.e. Uchinotai, 1959; Matsumine, 1963; Uwamiki, 1966; Fukazawa, 1969 and Ezuri, 1975. It is emphasized that our successes have resulted from the proper application of exploration technologies accumulated through our experiences. Firstly we defined the Kuroko horizon and favourable felsic volcanism based on the detailed structural and volczno-stratigraphic study of the Hokuroku district, and then delineated the promising areas by means of the quantitative evaluation of geophysical, geochemical and mineralogical parameters such as the magnetic susceptibility and contents of alkaline and alkaline earth metals in the foot wall dacites and clay mineral assemblages of both hanging and foot wall pyroclastics and dacites. Practical application of these techniques is essential to our routine Kuroko exploration.

"Fiber-reinforced spayed concrete has been used for several years in civil and tunneling operations. Research conducted to reduce cure times and increase compressive and flexural strengths resulted in the development of Tekcrete Fast®, a cementitious product capable of obtaining 41 MPa (6,000 psi) compressive strength and 8 MPa (1,200 psi) flexural strength in only 3 hours and reaching 7 day strengths of 62 MPa and 11.7 MPa (9,000 and 1,700 psi), respectively. A single bag product that uses conventional shotcrete and gunite application systems make it a natural crossover product for mining applications. The discovery of incredible adhesion properties and high resistance to chloride permeability helps ensure long-term stability and increases the ease of application. Project results from Disaster City® in Texas and the application for rehabilitating a coal mine belt entry are presented. The case study illustrates the effectiveness of the product in stabilizing a coal mine beltway and adjacent cross-cuts that were subjected to progressive sloughage due to humidity and cyclical loading. INTRODUCTION Original research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite that had structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading, allowing ingress into damaged structures minutes after applying the mix formulation. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was discovering that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and can be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing because water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus a low water-to-cement ratio can be achieved. However, since there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. Minova offers a commercial version of this material, Tekcrete Fast®, a product that has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction, and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize lose ground in metal, nonmetal, and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results, and applications and describes a case study to stabilize a coal mine beltway."

In many ways, conveyors are the lifeline of mining and processing operations. Like arteries in the human body, they continuously supply materials to and carry finished products and waste away from vital on-going operations. And like arteries, when the conveyors are running with less than maximum efficiency and productivity, it spells serious trouble for the operation's overall health. Inefficient conveyors suffer carryback, leading to the build-up of materials on idlers and other expensive components. They spill and leak material at loading zones and conveyor transfer points, causing accumulations that can damage the belt, wear moving components, and increase both clean-up labor and maintenance expense. They wander or mistrack, spilling material and endangering personnel and conveyor components including the belt itself. And through these inefficiencies, they multiply the operation's hidden costs. These added expenses are created in lost production, increased downtime for service and maintenance, and the cost of the replacement of prematurely worn equipment. In addition, the attitude that inefficiency is "good enough" is recognized elsewhere in the organization; as a result, other departments relax or operate at less than peak performance. Quality goes down and with it employee morale.

The Trixie mine is located in the East Mining District. Since production began in 1970 over 450 000 tonnes of ore grading 239 grams of silver, 6.9 grams of gold, and 1.2% Cu have been mined from veins in Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Detailed geologic mapping and extensive sampling are essential for compiling the data base required for efficiently developing and mining known reserves as well as planning exploration and development work. Although the basic techniques used by the geology group at the Trixie were developed many years ago, the reduced activity in underground precious metal mining in the U.S. have made these techniques less familiar to many presently active geologists. The increased activity in precious metals search and exploration again offer cause for the application of these techniques as a prerequisite to efficient exploration, development and production.

"As conventional underground deposits are continuing to be depleted, mining operations have been forced to produce at greater depths and in more geologically and geometrically challenging conditions. Over the past decade, there has been a global increase in the application of cemented paste backfill (CPB) material as a means of ground support in open stope mining operations. Although CPB has been extensively used within the industry, there are many fundamental factors affecting the design of safe and economical fill structures that are still not well understood. A critical design issue with respect to backfilled stopes is determining the stress state within the fill material as well as the surrounding rock.This paper details the development of a reliable numerical model for the simulation of stress distributions around the excavated stope area, as well as through the backfill material. Through discussions on modeling parameters and output results, one is provided with insights into the mechanisms of stress redistribution allowing for further accuracies in simulating the behavior of the CPB material as well as its interaction with the surrounding rockmass.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDModern technological innovations with respect to material processing, cementitious composition and chemical additives, and material transportation have provided the mining industry with a ground support material that greatly reduces mine waste costs, while, when used appropriately, increases reserve production and mine stability. As mining operations continue to produce in more complex geologic and geometric conditions, cemented paste backfill (CPB) has become commonly employed within primary-secondary excavation-support sequencing allowing for total extraction of the mining reserve. As shown in Figure 1, primary stopes are initially excavated and then backfilled in a two-staged pour: plug and final pours. The plug (initial pour), is initially placed at the bottom of the stope with a CPB material of heightened cementitious material. While the plug provides a strong foundation on which to build the rest of the CPB structure, it also provides protection against barricade breakthroughs (Li and Aubertin, 2009), as well as providing operations a means of underhand stope-and-fill mining through the use of an artificial sill pillar (Hughes, et al., 2011). Following placement, the plug is allowed to cure to a designated design strength. Upon completion of the plug, a less cementitious “final” pour material is used to backfill the rest of the excavated area."

Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes on, like some writers, talking about `the former' and `the latter', `he', `she', `it', and `they', through !clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a' feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear `the former' and `the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be dis¬dained. When you must use `the latter', do not confuse it with `the last'. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is best. I "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. `Prevented! is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means `checked' or `corrected'.

Mineral hydration is known to result in low flotation recoveries and grades within primary platinum group element ores worldwide. This is because the phyllosilicate minerals derived from hydration reactions of silicate minerals (i) form electrostatic coatings on valuable minerals that in turn hinder collector adsorption, (ii) alter the viscosity of the slurry leading to poor gas dispersion and (iii) decrease the concentrate grade due to naturally-floating gangue. Sodium silicate was investigated because its dispersant, rheology modifying, and depressant properties could prove promising in combating the problems associated with these ore types. Quantitative evaluation by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed large quantities of serpentine and talc present within the ore sample used in this study, which led to a poor flotation response as indicated by batch flotation tests. Using sodium silicate improved the recoveries and grades at high dosages (>1000 g/t). The zeta potential experiments indicate that improved recoveries are, in part, as a result of the reversal of serpentine surface charge, creating electrostatic repulsion between serpentine and valuable minerals which prevents the coating of valuable minerals by serpentine slimes. Ore dilution and rheology tests indicated that decreased viscosity at high dosages also improved recoveries. Talc micro-flotation tests revealed that the depression of talc occurred at higher sodium silicate dosages, which improved concentrate grade. The processing of nearsurface altered ores is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and the use of sodium silicate proved valuable in mitigating the problems associated with the altered ore investigated in this study. Collector and frother molecules in sulfide mineral flotation are thought to have separate roles in the flotation process, where the collector selectively hydrophobizes the mineral surface and the frother adsorbs onto the bubble surface, inhibiting bubble coalescence. Molecular interactions have been observed between these molecules which allow them to co-adsorb at each of the respective interfaces, improving pulp phase recovery. This study investigated the molecular interactions between sodium diethyl dithiophosphate (SDEDTP) and hexanol, and the mechanism by which these interactions improve the recovery of galena. In this study each of the respective interfaces were investigated for the adsorption of SDEDTP. The adsorption of SDEDTP on galena was measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry. At the air-water interface foam stability and pulp bubble coalescence was used to quantitatively discern if there are interactions between SDEDTP and hexanol. Microflotation and induction time experiments were performed to determine the effect of SDEDTP, hexanol and their mixtures on mineral recovery and bubble-particle attachment. The results of all these tests were collated to determine if SDEDTP-hexanol mixtures synergistically improve sulfide mineral recovery. It was found that SDEDTP reduced bubble coalescence in the pulp demonstrating activity at the airwater interface. Together SDEDTP and hexanol synergistically enhanced foam stability. This indicated that there are attractive molecular interactions between these reagents. Even though DTP did not adsorb onto galena, DTP-frother mixtures synergistically improved the recovery and attachment probability of this mineral. Adsorption studies with aeration showed that DTP in the presence of a frother transfers from the air-water interface to the galena mineral-water interface during bubble-particle collision. It was proposed that the transfer of hexanol through the thin film enhanced the kinetics of film thinning between the bubble and the particle by destabilising the thin film thus improving pulp phase mineral recovery.

Age hardening response of a Mg-Th-Zr alloy has been studied at temperatures in the range 60° to 450°C. Transmission microscopy revealed clustering of thorium atoms at low aging temperatures, supporting a previous report of GP zone formation. Peak strengthening, which is observed at 325°C, is due to the formation of a coherent, ordered, DO19 type superlattice structure, of Hobable composition Mg3Th, as plates parallel to the matrix prism planes. These plates later reveal a Laves phase structure of composition Mg2Th. The equilibrium Mg4Th phase begins to precipitate in two different forms at an early stage, competitively with the Mg2Th plates. RECENT work on the Mg-Th system indicated that, unlike most magnesium-base alloys, complex precipitation phenomena may be occurring. The partial phase diagram of the Mg-Th system indicates that an equilibrium phase, Mg5Th, is the sole intermediate phase.' sturkey,' however, has reported, using X-ray and electron diffraction techniques, that a metastable fcc Laves phase, Mg2Th, precedes the formation of the equilibrium compound, which he identified as closer in composition to Mg4Th. Murakami et al.3 reported that the equilibrium phase precipitates preferentially on grain boundaries and dislocations in a Mg-1.7 wt pct Th alloy; Kent and Kelly4 aged a more dilute alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th, for 4 days at 220°C and found similar results. In addition, they reported that a platelike phase with a structure close to that of the magnesium matrix forms perpendicular to the basal plane and is probably ordered. Research on a Mg-4 wt pct Th alloy by electrical resistance measurements and transmission electron microscopy has suggested that GP zones may form at low aging temperatures.3 However, the electron micrographs purporting to show this phenomenon were not conclusive. In view of the fragmentary evidence concerning the nature of the precipitation processes in the various Mg-Th alloys, an aging study was undertaken to clarify the characteristics of the various precipitates which form and to correlate the mechanical properties of the system with the direct precipitate-dislocation interactions. The latter results are presented elsewhere.' The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to discuss the precipitation sequence in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sheet stock (0.060 and 0.010 in. thick) of a commercial Mg-3.93 wt pct Th-0.42 wt pct Zr alloy (designated HK3lA) similar to that studied by sturkey2 was supplied through the courtesy of Dr. S. L. Couling of Dow Metal Products Co. Zirconium does not enter into any precipitation reactions,' but is present primarily as a grain refiner. The alloy was chill cast, warm rolled to 0.090 in. thick stock, and then finally reduced by a combination of hot and cold rolling. The alloy chemistry is given in Table I. This material was solution treated at 580°C for 4 hr in a dry CO2 atmosphere, and then water quenched. Material in this condition was fairly clear of precipitate particles and was fully recrystallized. Aging at temperatures less than 200°C was accomplished by immersing the alloy in a silicone oil bath; for higher temperatures, aging was done in a salt pot. Age hardening treatments were conducted at 60°, 80°, 105°, 135°, 160°, 250°, 325°, 350°, and 450°C for times ranging from 5 min to 400 hr. Hardness tests were performed on chemically polished 0.060-in.-thick blanks of solution treated material which were aged at the various temperatures for increasing lengths of time. For aging temperatures above 150°C the Rockwell Superficial 30T scale was employed, while samples hardened at temperatures below 150°C were monitored with the 45T scale. Each data point consists of at least three separate readings. Yield stresses also were measured at room temperature on both 0.060 and 0.010 in. sheet specimens aged at 325°C. The aged foils were thinned by the window method in a solution of 80 pct absolute alcohol and 20 pct concentrated perchloric acid (70 pct) maintained at 0°C. A stainless steel cathode was used and the applied voltage was 10 to 15 v. Thinned samples were rinsed in distilled water and pure methanol. After the me-thanol rinse the thin foils were quickly dried between filter paper. Foils prepared by the above method were examined in a Hitachi HU11B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. RESULTS A) Hardness. The hardness data are depicted in Figs. 1 and 2. Peak strengthening occurs at 325°C after aging about 6 min, see Fig. 1. Significant strengthening is achieved also at 350°C, but aging at 450°C produces only softening. The stepped curve at 250°C indicates that a complicated precipitation process may be occurring at that temperature. Fig. 2 suggests that at least two hardening mechanisms exist since the lowest temperature hardness peaks are displaced to the left of the peaks obtained at 135° and 105°C. A great deal of scatter is observed at long times in all cases due to magnesium surface degradation caused by the silicone oil bath. B) Identification of the Strengthening Precipitates. The structure formed atlowagingtemperatures (c10O°C) was not clearly resolvable by transmission microscopy. The only bright-field evidence for a change in structure was a mottled appearance which could be observed at extinction contours, as shown in Fig. 3(a), and the disappearance of this effect when dislocations produced under the influence of the electron beam passed through the matrix, as noted in

Henty Gold Mine is an underground operation producing 100 000 ounces of gold per annum. The original mining method used was flatbacking with paste fill. However, a non-entry method û uphole benching û was introduced in 1998 to recover the deteriorating crown pillars. Initial challenges were encountered, including poor drilling accuracy, difficulty in charging holes and poor rise performance. These challenges were overcome by a Continuous Improvement Team, consisting of mining engineers, supervisors and miners. Following this, the Team implemented further changes aimed at reducing ore loss and dilution. A second area addressed by the Team was development blasting, where innovative detonator technology known as the ExelTM DevelDetTM was introduced and rapidly accepted by the operators. Continued use of the ExelTM DevelDetTM resulted in a number of benefits, such as easier bogging, less perimeter damage, faster charging and hook-up and decreased wastage. Finally, improvements were made in the area of explosive handling, where competency-based training of operators was conducted and manual handling of ANFO has been significantly reduced by the introduction of the MiniMoverTM into the underground magazine.

Magnesium-based alloys are of growing interest for many industrial applications due to their favourable strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability. Mass reduction has advantages in many industrial sectors for example, in automotive, a reduction in mass improves fuel economy and can lead to more efficient mechanical systems by reducing the weight of moving parts like wheels, gears, pistons. However, the relatively poor corrosion and wear resistance limits the use of magnesium and its alloys in many potential applications. The patented Keronite® plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process enables manufacturers to overcome such problems and, in its latest generation equipment has been developed to industrial realisation for high volume production. This paper presents microstructural characteristics and corrosion performance of two most widely used high pressure die-cast magnesium alloys AZ91D and AM6OB with a duplex corrosion protection coating system that comprised a thin Keronite pre-treatment followed by a subsequent automotive grade final powder coat.
