Drillability of rocks by mechanical means is closely related to the physical properties of the respective rocks, Various approaches by previous investigators on rock drillability are presented, as well as recent techniques studied by the Bureau of Mines. The studies show drillability concepts based on (1) theoretical drilling equations derived from laboratory drilling experiments extended to field drilling results and on (2) a statistical method where multiple regression analysis is used to develop a prediction equation for drillability.

Carbonaceous gold ores containing gold dispersed in sulfides are refractory to cyanidation because: ( 1) the carbonaceous materials adsorb gold during cyanidation; (2) a portion of the gold is so finely dispersed in the sulfide mineral lattice as to preclude contact with cyanide solution; and (3) a portion of the gold is chemically combined with carbonaceous material. Techniques which have been used to treat these ores are: (1) roasting or chemical oxidation to decompose sulfides and carbonaceous materials; (2) flotation to reject carbon; (3) the use of kerosene or other reagents to passivate the adsorptive carbon compounds; (4) carbon or resin in pulp; (5) flotation of a bulk concentrate which is treated by one of the above methods; and (6) the use of chelating agents which have a stronger affinity for gold than the activated carbon in the ore.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized a central composite experimental design to investigate leaching kinetics of pure chalcopyrite in the sulfuric acid-oxygen system. The six factors studied were oxygen pressures of 150, 300 and 450 PSI, leach temperatures of 35O, 65O, and 95O C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16 and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g H,SO,/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. Chemical analysis and oxygen consumption measurements indicatedthat leaching occurs through three consecutive reactions. Temperature was the primary determinant of leach rate and solution acidity was the primary determinant of oxygen consumption, sulfur oxidation, and activation energy.

This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State's refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State's petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation; (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

"Abstract The wet type and dry type of deep mixing methods have been developed and widely applied for on-land and marine constructions in Japan. The quality assurance (QA) of the methods has been usually carried out by unconfined compression test on field stabilized soil sampled by core boring in Japan. In some other countries, stabilized soil excavated by the wet grab sampling instead of core sampling is often subjected to unconfined compression test for quality assurance. There are several merits and demerits in each method, but few studies have been carried out to compare the stabilized soil strength of these two types of specimens to discuss their applicability to practical construction. The author has conducted a series of field and laboratory tests to compare the stabilized soil strength and discuss the applicability of wet grab sampling to QA for wet and dry types of deep mixing method.In this study, the wet grab sampling was carried out at two road embankment construction sites where the wet type and dry type of deep mixing were applied. The cement stabilized soil was excavated at the three depths by a wet grab sampler soon after the DM column construction. The test result is compared with the other test data in the previous study to discuss the applicability of the web grab sampling method for QA of cement stabilized soil.IntroductionThe Deep Mixing Method (DMM), an in-situ soil stabilization technique using cement and/or lime as a binder, is often employed to improve soft soils (Kitazume and Terashi, 2013). A variety of factors and their interactions affect the eventual strength of a deep-mixed column, while some of which are controllable (e.g. binder type and dose) by engineers while the others are not (e.g. soil types, ground temperature, etc.; Babasaki et al., 1997). In addition to laboratory mix tests, which in essence are a parametric study to estimate the influence of these factors on a particular soil’s strength, the quality assurance (QA) practice in Japan usually involves unconfined compression test on sampling cores from the stabilized columns after a given curing period. It has been recognized, however, that the ‘field strength’, or the strength of the retrieved core, quf is on average lower than the ‘laboratory strength’, qul, evaluated by laboratory mix test. Also allowing for the inevitable variability, existing guidelines (for example, PWRC, 2004 and CDIT, 2008) recommend the design quf /qul values of, for example, 0.5-1.0 for the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing; a wet-type technique, in which binder is added as slurry) and 0.2-0.33 for the DJM (Dry Jet Mixing; a dry-type technique, in which binder is added as powder)."

Perhaps this is the first time that an analysis of the industrial minerals panorama has been made in Mexico for that type of commodities. Because the non-metallic minerals lack the glamour of the metallic minerals and are usually of less unit value than metallics, a comparative study of these commodities has seldom been attempted. Sulphur, fluorite, barite and few others are an exception. Consequently, the statistics on the lowest per unit value industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, gravels, sands, etc., are usually scarce and not always accurate. The following, then, will be an attempt to show a general status of the industrial minerals in Mexico with due reservations regarding volumes and values. According to Kruger (1971), this group of minerals surprisingly very little known, and called non-metallics because the lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom. It constitutes perhaps 75% of all the mineral varieties. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of common acids, sulphides, hydroxides and two elements carbon and sulphur. The list of non-metallic minerals is therefore very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and less commonly arsenates, chromates, molybdates, sulphides, tungstates and vanadates. The latter group and many of the oxides are sought usually for their metal content.

Despite of significant cost advantages and the positive expierence roof bolting is limited up to 15-20% of all workings at the Cuzbass mines. The low level of application of the technology is the result of specific mining and geological conditions and defects of organization and technical support. When analysing mining and geological conditions of development working maintenance and geomechanical aspects the necessity of changing of technological schemes of preparation and extraction of mine sections is obvious. The prospects of large-scaled transferring from frame support to roof bolting are connected with introduction the technology of support with the help of non- expanding bolt classes including bolts with mineral filler fixation. The design of bolters with mineral filler fixation is given here. The results of testing of bolt load characteristics in artificial holes and in situ are proved the technology efficient. For increasing of drilling works efficiency it is necessary to master the production of oilless compressor and heading machines with the manipulator. For bolt dimension forecast it is recommended to use the relations of measured parameters of "dome" to roof shifts. Effective monitoring of rock pressure in the junctions is connected with the use of support of conventional bolts together with bolts of deep installation with simultaneous supporting of face ends with special mechanical sets, which compensate face length change.

"Center Hill Dam is a critical part of the infrastructure controlling floods at the Caney Fork River and reducing flood levels at the Cumberland, lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation Project was necessary to address Karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress of the dam. From 2011 to 2014 BAUER Foundation Corp. (BFC) performed deep foundation works for this project. The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall extends throughout the clay embankment into the underlying rock to provide encasement during the construction of the second wall. Its width of 7.4 feet makes it the widest diaphragm wall ever installed. The second wall is the actual seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2- feet wide wall. It extends through the first wall into the underlying rock and is up to 300 feet deep. The paper introduces the project, the requirements specified by United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for encasement and barrier wall and the approaches taken by BFC. It discusses the ground conditions and describes the excavation equipment as well as the excavation methods used. A special focus is put on the steering capabilities of the hydrocutter equipment and the verticality performance.PROJECTBeginning in 2011, BFC was tasked by the USACE with the installation of a seepage barrier/cutoff wall at the Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation project under a partially performance based specification. The remediation was necessary due to karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress, which led USACE to rate the dam with the most critical dam safety action classification (DSAC I). The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall, an encasement wall, extends vertically through the clay embankment and is embedded minimally into the underlying bedrock to provide embankment stability during the construction of the second wall, the barrier wall. The encasement wall is constructed of overlapping panels 7.4 feet (2.25 m) wide, which is the widest diaphragm wall ever installed, and up to 210 feet (64 m) deep. The second wall is the seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2 feet (0.6 m) wide wall consisting of overlapping panels. It extends through the encasement wall into the underlying bedrock and is up to 307 feet (93 m) deep. BAUER BC40 and BC50 hydrocutters mounted on MC96 and MC128 foundation cranes were used to perform the majority of the works (Figure 1). Excavations were performed under bentonite slurry (encasement wall) and water (barrier wall) and concrete was poured with the tremie method. Adding to the challenges, the project had to be executed in an environmentally sensitive area. Based on the high risk, a special focus was put on monitoring, quality control and geometric accuracy. The WallTracker information management system was used to share all relevant data between BFC and USACE (Roff et al. 2014)."

En este sentido, el presente texto describe las ventajas de reutilizar dicha biomasa, tales como el bajo costo de operación y la elevada capacidad de remoción de metales pesados, sobre los métodos de remoción convencionales.

A short history of PLATO development; as a training system is presented with reflection on the major training trends being used to improve training effectiveness. A discussion is offered to describe the benefits of using a system for individualizing instruction. An introduction; is offered showing how one can recognize' individual differences, with an explanation of how the strengths of a computer are used to deliver and manage the training. Simulations of hazardous processes are shown to be one of the most effective uses of the computer for training.

Exploration activities in 1980 felt the effects of unstable economic conditions and oscillating metal prices. In the cyclical, boom-or-bust precious metals and uranium markets, precious metals activity flourished and uranium was definitely in a slump. By November last year, the price for vellowcake was down nearly $20 from two years earlier. Many mining and milling operations closed, particularly in Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado. Decreasing emphasis on nuclear power continued to impact the market, as did the Three Mile Island accident of 1979. Earlier forecasts estimated that 10 to 12 reactors would be ordered per year by US utilities throughout the 1980s, but current forecasts suggest that it may be 1983 or 1984, or even later, before any new US plants are ordered, according to Thomas A. Boyden, vice president of Nuclear Exchange Corp. "Without those new plants, the consumption loss to industry is 4 to 5 million pounds (1.8-2.3 kt) of uranium per year. The cumulative loss to the industry is currently estimated at 25 to 30 million pounds (11.3-13.6 kt)," Boyden said in a May 1980 presenta¬tion. Despite the plunging market, there were a few notable uranium explora¬tion programs: •Exxon expanded uranium exploration in New Mexico, where the company reportedly took preliminary steps toward acquiring mineral rights to a 22-km2 prospect, 19 km south of Santa Fe. • Mountain States Resources began the second phase of an exploratory drilling program on its Sinbad/ Solo prospect in Utah. • Also in Utah, Cotter Corp. drilled its first exploratory hole in the Dirty Devil River district. Exploration for precious metals in 1980, however, appeared to tend toward the opposite extreme. High prices sparked near feverish searches in Alaska, California, Colorado, and Nevada. Numerous mines abandoned years ago were revived with some signs of success. Significant gold finds were reported in California and Nevada: • Homestake Mining Co. announced a gold discovery in California estimated to contain over 5 Mt with an average grade of about 5.8 g/t. Because the deposit consists of finely disseminated particles not visible to the eye, many speculate that prospectors bypassed the area during the 1849 California gold rush. • Newmont Mining Corp. discovered two gold ore bodies-Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry. Maggie Creek reportedly contains an estimated 13.7 t of gold in 4.3 Mt of ore, and Gold Quarry contains about 31.1 t of gold in 9 Mt of low grade ore and 2.3 Mt of higher grade ore. Highlights of this year's exploration review include articles on the modest growth recorded in geophysical activity, technical developments in exploration geochemistry, the variety of new instruments being tested or made available for exploration, and a state-by-state exploration review for the year.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. In understanding the consequence of existing law, and the likely implications of its reform, it is necessary to comprehend the logic of the situation that the law provides individual decision makers and how that situation would be adjusted by reform. In particular, the way in which natural resources, including minerals, are used and managed is influenced by the definition and structure of property rights that the law provides. Property rights are enforceable claims to use or to benefit from resources. An example is a mining licence that allows its holder to extract minerals in a specified area. Property rights establish the structure of incentives, opportunities and constraints within which resource use decisions are made, ie the logic of the situation, and hence influence the use and management of resources. The extent and type of mining in New Zealand, for example, reflects the rights that miners have to extract minerals, and their rights to benefit from mining as against their duties to compensate landowners and pay royalties. This paper describes the characteristics of minerals that are relevant to the definition of property rights, analyses the implications of alternative property right arrangements and describes the existing situation.

Conway’s Law states that unless we intentionally design automation tools around what we need, we will simply replicate our existing processes. While we may achieve some savings this way, there is an opportunity for greater benefits if we re-imagine the way we, as an industry, perform design. This paper examines current technology and shows how even small departures from merely encoding what we currently do could reap significant benefits. From these examples a framework is developed for a new and innovative approach tvo automation that will allow us to design more quickly, to a higher quality, and communicate outcomes more effectively.

O presente estudo visa avaliar a resistência à corrosão de dois aços alto manganês com relação ao aço 9% Níquel em solução eletrólito 0,001M de H2SO4. Para esta pesquisa foram utilizados dois aços com teores de manganês de 22% e 26%, e a liga de aço 9% Níquel que é amplamente utilizada na indústria petroquímica. Os ensaios realizados para comparação da resistência à corrosão foram o monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto (OCP) e polarização linear anódica. Foi escolhida a solução de H2SO4 pela presença do enxofre, oriundo dos campos de produção como impureza no gás natural. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS) para a caracterização dos produtos de corrosão. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os aços alto Manganês apresentaram valores similares de resistência à corrosão, mas ainda inferiores em relação ao aço 9% Níquel.

Existing measurements for the steady-state permeation of hydrogen in a iron above 100°C have been examined for contribution of determinate errors. The analysis leads to a recommended equation for the permeability of hydrogen in a iron: o= (2.9 ±0.5) x 10-3 exp - (8400 ± 400)/RT cu cm (ntp H2) cm-1 sec-1 atm-1/2 THE permeability of a iron to hydrogen has been the subject of numerous investigations over the past 40 years, and at present there are thirteen sets of published results for the rate of steady-state permeation of hydrogen in a iron above 100°C. The numerical values in each set of results are entirely self-consis-tent, but the spread among the sets is too large to be attributed solely to experimental error, i.e., to error other than in the specimen itself. Several reasons have been advanced to explain the disparities, but to date the relative importance of experimental inaccuracy to the spread remains uncertain. The purpose of this report is to examine in detail the sources of determinate errors inherent in the experiments and to assess as far as possible the contribution of the errors to the results. The ultimate goal is the selection of values for the permeability and heat of permeation most nearly representative of hydrogen in a iron. The analysis is limited to those experiments in which the permeation rate was observed at steady state—a condition in which traps for hydrogen within the metal are filled to a fixed level15 so that the trapping mechanism is not reflected in the rate of passage of the gas. Furthermore only data are examined in which surface processes are judged to have little or no influence on the flow. It is hoped with these restrictions to obtain values of the permeability and the heat of permeation which will be as closely related as possible to the mechanism of lattice diffusion. I) DEFINITION OF TERMS; UNITS In this report the data for permeation are given in terms of a coefficient oj permeability, ?, which is defined by the equation: jt=?A/?x{p1/2-po1/2) [1] where jt is the total flow of gas normal to the surface of a membrane of planar geometry, e.g., a disc, of area A and thickness ?x; pi and po are the pressures in the input and output sides, respectively. For flow radial to the walls of a membrane of cylindrical geometry, e.g., a tube, the corresponding equation is: where 1 is the length of the cylinder, and ri and ro are the inner and outer radii, respectively. The flux normal to the surface is given by Fick's law: j= -D(dc/dx) [3] At steady state the concentration gradient will be constant, and integration of Eq. [3] gives for the total flow through a disc of area A and thickness Ax: h =-DA(co - ci) [4] where c, and ci are the concentrations of solute at the output and input surfaces, respectively. When surface control is absent, co and ci are given by Sievert's law c = Kp1/2, and substitution therewith into Eq. [4] gives directly Eq. [I] where ? = DK. Integration of Fick's Eq. [3] in cylindrical coordinates will give Eq. [2] where again ? = DK and is thus shown to be independent of geometry (provided that surface control is negligible). The coefficient of permeability, or simply the permeability,* must be expressed in proper units. A work roll thermal crown model has been developed for a wide range of hot and cold rolling mill applications. The model is extremely fast, robust and accurate to determine the evolution of thermal crown all along the rolling campaigns. It has also ability to consider work roll shifting, multiple segmented cooling zones along the length and circumference of the roll as well as composite rolls properties (e.g. different thermal properties between mandrel and core of the roll). Moreover, the model includes simultaneously fast and slow temperature evolution calculations, respectively near roll surface (skin area) and at a certain distance below the roll surface (bulk area). This gives to thermal crown predictions a higher accuracy than conventional thermal crown models from literature that consider only the slow temperature evolution regime. An optimization procedure together with roll surface temperature and roll thermal profile measurements have been used to tune the model. The tuned model applied to hot rolling conditions has shown a significant influence of roll shifting and composite rolls properties on the prediction of roll temperature distribution and thermal crown during rolling. The tuned model applied to cold rolling conditions highlights the importance of mill operators practices to modify cooling distribution across roll barrel length with the segmented cooling zones to adjust the thermal crown and to get better strip shape control.
