An optical probe for burner monitoring in copper flash smelting, first developed at the University of Concepcion, is being industrially tested in a collaboration between Kingston Process Metallurgy, Aurubis AG, and Queen’s University. The sensor uses fibre-optics and optical emission spectroscopy to analyze the light emitted from combusting particles in the furnace reaction shaft. Information that can be extracted from the emission spectrum includes the temperature and brightness of the flame, as well as emission lines or bands from excited atomic and/or molecular species. Laboratory proof of concept testing of the sensor was first completed in a continuously fed drop tube reactor using O2/S stoichiometric ratios between 0.8–4.0. These O2/S stoichiometries capture the industrial operating condition, which is typically less than 1. The results from lab testing justified a plant trial of the optical probe, which was done in the Aurubis Hamburg flash furnace in September 2018. From this trial, approximately 31 hours of spectral data were collected and synchronized with furnace operating data. The results from both drop tower test work and the plant trial are discussed with implications for process monitoring in the commercial furnace. INTRODUCTION Flash furnace smelting is a continuous feed, batch tap, pyrometallurgical process. It is used to treat copper sulphide concentrates and small amounts of secondary materials, such as dust generated by the process. O2 enriched air and the concentrate blend are fed into the furnace reaction shaft through the concentrate burner. As the particles fall through the reaction shaft, they heat up and ignite, causing rapid, exothermic reactions that oxidize the iron sulphide, some copper sulphide and impurities in the feed. Reacted particles fall into the settler of the furnace, melt and separate into a matte and slag, while the SO2 enriched off-gas is carried out of the furnace for heat recovery and H2SO4 production. Operation of the furnace is achieved by adjusting a limited number of control variables. The main variables are the blast feed rate, blast oxygen enrichment, SiO2 flux feed rate and CH4 combustion rate (CH4 is used when the chemical energy of the concentrate is low) all measured relative to a set feed throughput. (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 1987; Davenport, King, Schlesinger & Biswas, 2002) The batch tapping nature of flash furnaces makes operation difficult because these control variables impact each other, and product quality can only be measured when matte and slag are tapped from the furnace. This means that operation of a furnace is based on feedback control from matte and slag assays. Because of the time-delay associated with understanding product quality, there is interest in using technology to monitor the combustion reactions that happen in the furnace reaction shaft.

Existing geological structures such as faults or shear zones can greatly influence the interpretations of amplitude or energy attenuations of measured blasting vibrations along both affected and unaffected orientations. Mineralisation in conjunction with large faults or shears is commonplace in the geology of steeply dipping metalliferous deposits, such as those found in the goldfields of Western Australia. Better understanding of the influence of faults or shear zones on blast-induced seismic waves can lead to more effective blast vibration monitoring programs and interpretation of the results measured along affected orientations.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

Utilizing the principles of elastic-brittle fracture mechanics, stress-displacement relationships are derived for an elastic solid containing a slip plane consisting of various configurations of collinear arrays of cracks. These models take into account the heterogeneous nature of slip planes as observed in the lab and in the field, and are relevant to the behavior of rock containing faults, joints, bedding planes, and fractures. All of our models exhibit slip weakening behavior, and show regimes of both stable (aseismic) and unstable (seismic) deformation. For given configurations of cracks and applied boundary conditions, our results show explicit ly the energy released through unstable crack growth. For instance, it is found that two equal length cracks growing together release more seismic energy than, say, a large crack growing into a small crack. Also, by allowing cracks to coalesce, our models show multiple stick-slip events without crack healing or other geochemical means.

The rebound phenomenon, which occurs during rockfalls when a rock block impacts with a slope surface, is influenced by several parameters related not only to the slope material but also to the block and the kinematics. The paper presents a small-scale testing campaign undertaken at the LMR (EPFL) to better understand and quantify the bouncing of blocks on granular slopes. The influence of some factors related to the ground material, the block and the kinematics is examined. The Channel Tunnel is an outstanding example of an undersea tunnel and its design illustrates most of the unique features of this type of tunnel. The marine site investigation was partic- ularly vulnerable to adverse weather conditions. To minimise this interference the time the drilling vessel was required to remain on station was kept to a minimum by expediting the drilling and the insitu tests as far as was practicable. To avoid additional unforeseen costs the contract documents were framed to take particular account of marine practice. The limited access at the coast line meant that for economy, maximum tunnel advance rates had to be attained. Ground excavation, handling and disposal methods and the provision of the lining were optimised and equipment specified in detail to ensure that no one com- ponent was delayed by a lack of capacity or mechanical failure in any other.

Geothermal Brines are a significant potential source of valuable minerals and metals. These brines are water that is heated by the natural heat flow from the depths of the earth. Hotter brines, typically with temperatures greater than 120°C, are used to generate electricity. Lower temperature brines are directly used to supply thermal energy to applications such as agriculture, aquaculture and process/domestic heat. The geothermal waters have had intimate and lengthy contact with the layers of the earth?s crust that they flow through, resulting in dissolution of minerals and metals from the rocks, and solution into the hot water. These aqueous solutions can be processed to recover minerals and metals. Some potential products include silica, zinc and lithium, along with other materials. Recovery of minerals and metals from geothermal brines can be viewed as ?solution mining by nature?, followed by application of known or new hydrometallurgical techniques for isolation and purification. This paper discusses the opportunities, the processes, the challenges, the current status, the economics and the potential for recovery of minerals and metals from geothermal brines.

The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

Throughout the years, research studies have reached a consensus in acknowledging the relevancy of surface chemistry phenomena on minerals separation and metals extraction. Many techniques, and notably, scanning electron microscope-based technologies have revolutionised the entire mineral processing industry. Nevertheless, the comprehensive understanding on how surface chemistry properties influence the performance of many processes involving ores is still a challenge, a matter of controversy. The latter is mainly due to the fact that all interfacial processes do not necessarily require stoichiometric and well defined atomic structures. This is particularly true in the case of sulphide minerals which are well known to be superficially unstable in aerated media. When trying to measure any variable related to mineral-mineral or mineral-aqueous solution interfaces, there are too many unknowns regarding how sensitive the interface is when facing sampling protocols and sample handling. The aim of this research work is to make a case for improving future concentrators? survey protocols. It suggests a methodology to study effectively chemical changes at the outmost mineral surface layer at different stages of a mineral processing operation. The sampling protocol and sample handling is presented in details and it is applied to the regrinding stage of an industrial plant.

"Under the 4-in-1 recycling system, Taiwan producers and importers who using packaging containers have responsibility to pay the recycling fees for recycling the waste packaging containers they produced or imported; while the collectors/recycling plants who collect/sort/recover waste packaging containers receive subsidy for conducting recycling. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is a way for sustainability of the recycling. The objective of this study is to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes. This study employs a regression analysis and cost adjusting model to link the factors used for calculating product charge and recycling subsidy on recycling waste packaging containers with socio-economic indicators, raw material prices, wholesale prices, and secondary material prices. Study results provide estimated models to EPA in Taiwan for amending product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes.IntroductionUnder ""4-in-1"" recycling system in Taiwan, waste packaging containers are officially announced to be recycled. The waste packaging containers announced to be recycled include iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs. In order to compensate the recycling system, EPA charges associated manufacturers and importers for recycling fee and subsidies recyclers to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance. Basically, the budget for subsidy recyclers is from the recycling charge. That means if we want to increase recycling efficiency by increasing subsidy to recyclers then the manufacturers and importers have to pay more for reaching financial balance of recycling foundation. The benefit of recyclers and fee payers are always conflicted. The recycling charge and subsidy is thus argued by fee payers and subsidy receivers all the time. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is the only way to keep the recycling system sustainable. Moreover, a suitable mechanism has to be changed along with the changing social economic condition. The recycling performances and effectiveness of this recycling system is also highly dependent on the pricing mechanism. This study intends to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic change. Related previous studies about recycling system in Taiwan with its performance include Hsu and Kuo (2002, 2005), Bor, Chien, and Hsu (2004) and Hsu (1999). Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values."

This Bureau of Mines report presents the initial development of a two-dimensional method of analysis for inclusions in plates in which the deformed shape of an open hole and the separate structural behavior of inclusion and plate with hole are used to obtain the stresses and strains in the inclusion only. In this report the solution for a circular inclusion is presented because a direct verification of the results with previous solutions was possible. The numerical results were in exact agreement with those obtained with the equations of Sezawa and Donnell. The equations developed are less complex than those of Sezawa and more general, for a circular inclusion, than those of Donnell. Stresses and strains in the inclusion are in terms of the elastic constants of the inclusion and the plate and the biaxial stress field applied far away. The elastic constants can be all different. An important conclusion from this work is that a difference in Poisson's ratios between inclusion and plate may be as important as a difference in Young's moduli between inclusion and plate in producing the inclusion effect. Many problems in mining and rock mechanics can be treated as inclusion problems. The understanding of inclusion behavior on a physical basis should provide the solutions to some of these problems.

A seismic monitoring network has recently been installed in the North Fork Valley coal mining region of western Colorado as part of a NIOSH mine safety technology transfer project with two longwall coal mine operators. Data recorded with this network will be used to characterize mining related and natural seismic activity in the vicinity of the mines and examine potential hazards due to ground shaking near critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, and steep slopes. Ten triaxial strong-motion accelerometers have been installed on the surface to form the core of a network that covers approximately 250 square kilometers (100 sq. miles) of rugged canyon-mesa terrain. Spread-spectrum radio networks are used to telemeter continuous streams of seismic waveform data to a central location where they are converted to IP data streams and ported to the Internet for processing, archiving, and analysis.

It is essential for a. mining company to determine an optimal mining strategy which will maximize the return on investment. In the case of Placer Development Ltd., the Lerch-Grossman three-dimensional optimization technique has been implemented on a digital computer to assist in the determination of such a strategy. It is the purpose of this chapter to explain and illustrate the methodology of the Placer Development Ltd. computer system with emphasis on the feasibility phase of a mine's development. In the Placer Development Ltd. strategy determination process, it is essential that certain objectives be considered: 1) There must be some means of constructing a realistic computer model of an ore body which gives a significant weight to geological constraints. 2) Data must be accurate and quantifiable. 3) Computer solutions must be unique, i.e., approximation or iteration methods of determining optimal solutions are undesirable. A method must be used which, when given fixed parameters and data, yields a mathematically sound unique solution. The following material is a presentation of how these objectives have been implemented. The flow of this outline will be from the general to the specific, with an example application.

Between 1966 and 1976, Australia moved from being a non-producer to a position of meeting more than ten per cent of world nickel demand. New mine developments beginning the early-1990s have the promise of more than doubling the country's world market share - from around eight per cent to perhaps close to 20 per cent. This new surge in activity - the so-called `second nickel boom' - has led to several developments which seem likely to have similar economic impacts to those of the late- 1960s and early-1970s. There are, however, some notable differences this time around. The impact of long distance commuting over the past 30 years has changed the regional development scenario. The gold industry is much stronger in Australia than it was in the late-1960s and this helps to place the importance of new nickel discoveries in a more realistic perspective. As potential players have jockeyed to complete feasibility studies and move into construction and production phases of new long-life mines, established suppliers clearly seem to be taking actions to discourage the newcomers. In what appears to be a classic oligipolistic market situation, the heightening of perceived entry barriers to the industry appears to be a particularly visible strategy undertaken. In the current scenario as well, greater vertical integration among producers appears a significant influence on market power.

THE leaching method that was first widely used with the cyanide process consisted of percolation leaching of crushed ore in vats or leaching tanks. It was frequently necessary to separate the sand for cyanide treatment and discard the slimes, because only granular material allows the necessary amount of solution to percolate through it in a reasonable time. Later a slime process consisting of agitation followed by thick-ening and filtration was developed, and is extensively used to the pres-ent day. Even though the agitation-leaching slime process is considered satis-factory, the cost of plant and of operation are both greater than for a percolation-leaching plant of equal capacity. This situation has been recognized in the hydrometallurgical treatment of copper-bearing slimes; and a considerable amount of j work has been done at the Southwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in an effort to develop a percolation method of treating slimes. Experimental work on the copper-leaching problem was started by H. E. Keyes1, and later tests were made by J. D. Sullivan and A. P. Towne2. The Bureau of Mines work resulted in the development of a process by which slimes were moisture-agglomerated with sand and crushed ore, to form a permeable mass through which solution could be trickled without breaking clown the glomerules. The agglomeration trickle-leaching method was devel-oped on a small scale and finally tried out in a 12-ton vat. Successful results were obtained as long is the leach solution was added slowly, so that the agglomerated charge was never flooded. If the leach solu-tion flooded the charge, the glomerules broke down and, the charge became impervious. Different parts of the world in which mineral separation by flotation is practiced experience vastly different natural temperatures, and in some districts there is a big difference between summer and winter temperatures. It will be shown in this paper that the temperature is of considerable importance where it is desired to separate pyrite or arsenopyrite from other minerals. It is probable that some of the differences obtained in the flotation of these minerals at plants working under otherwise similar conditions are due to temperature variations. The influence of temperature on the flotation of galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite by xanthates is less marked than its influence on pyrite flotation. Experimental Method The methods used have been described previously.l-4 In each test the clean mineral specimen was immersed in a solution prepared by adding the reagents in the following order: (1) sodium carbonate and hydrochloric acid as necessary to buffer the solution and to give approximately the pH value desired, (2) sodium cyanide, (3) copper sulphate, (4) ethyl xanthate, followed by (5) a final adjustment of pH value. After ½ hr. the mineral was tested for a xanthate film by bringing a bubble of air into apparent contact with the submerged polished surface. If true contact (spreading) was not obtained within ½ min. and after cleaning the surface by wiping with a small linen pad, it was concluded that the adsorption of a xanthate film had been prevented. Following the method already described (ref. 2), curves have been constructed such that for a solution composition corresponding to any point below the curve, contact between mineral and air is possible, whereas for a solution composition corresponding to any point above the curve, contact is impossible.
