The United States has never attained importance as a producer of asbestos, the domestic output being only 1 to 3 percent of the quantity required to supply raw material for its extensive asbestos-product manu- facturing industries. Production is centered in four principal countries-- Canada, Rhodesia, Union of South Africa, and the Soviet Union. Since asbestos first became an important commercial commodity the Province of Quebec, Canada, has led in tonnage produced, but a large proportion of the output of this province is shorter, nonspinning grades. Since 1916 the Union of South Africa and Rhodesia have become increasingly important as sources of the higher-grade spinning fibers. Before the World War Russia ranked next to Canada as a producer of asbestos, but during the revolution- ary period the industry in that country was almost at a standstill. In 1926, however, activity was revived, and each year since then production and exports have increased greatly. Minor quantities of asbestos are produced in Cyprus; Australia, Finland, and several other countries. Chrysotile is the leading product in all the producing countries, but substantial quantities of both blue (crocidolite) and brown (amosite) asbestos also are produced in the Union of South Africa. Minor quantities of anthophyllite and similar amphibole varieties are mined in the United States, Italy, Bulgaria, Finland, and several other countries.

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safety studies revealed that investigators use a wide range of statistical techniques for the analysis of mine injury data. Researchers have addressed the various issues of accident causation and prevention through analysis of mine injury data collected from mines. These studies are generally based on historical accident/injury data without considering the injured person/population at risk. In this paper, a public health approach, based on scientific methods of epidemiology, is presented to address mine safety issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of disease and injury patterns among populations in time and space. Originally, epidemiology was concerned with epidemics of communicable diseases. Then it was extended to non-communicable diseases. Safety researchers found that epidemiologic methods are the best tools for injury research, because the occurrences of injury and the occurrences of disease are quite similar. As a result, some researchers started applying this concept to injury research. This paper presents some of the techniques used in epidemiologic studies and illustrates the application of a case-control study design to evaluate the role of some risk factors associated with injuries in underground coal mines. In this study, the injured persons were identified and, simultaneously, interviews were conducted to find the significant risk factors responsible for occupational injuries in coal mines.

Considering the two most important issues the ironmaking industry faces today, i.e., energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, it would be advantageous to utilize the concentrate-size raw materials directly without pelletizing or sintering, especially without the use of coke. This plenary lecture describes two such processes developed at the University of Utah. One is the Flash Ironmaking Technology (FIT) and the other is a moving-bed process for continuous ironmaking with gaseous reduction of iron ore concentrate (MBIT). These technologies are designed to produce iron directly from iron concentrate without requiring pelletization/sintering and cokemaking in two significantly different temperature ranges. They take advantage of the high reactivity of the concentrate particles and will considerably reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared with the current processes. The process of the development from the conception of the idea, to kinetic feasibility establishment, to laboratory flash furnace, and finally to the operation of a prototype facility for the development of the FIT is discussed. The development of the MBIT also started with the formulation of the process concept, followed by kinetics feasibility establishment, and the design of a potential industrial reactor. The results of economic analyses on the FIT are briefly described.

Effective management of ore loss and dilution is essential for successful grade control and short-term mine planning due to their significant impact on the economic, environmental, and technical aspects of open-pit mining operations. Factors influencing ore loss and dilution fall into two categories: (i) controllable factors like mine equipment selectivity and blast design and (ii) uncontrollable factors such as spatial heterogeneity of ore and waste blocks on a bench. This paper focuses on the second category by applying spatial entropy concept to capture heterogeneity at the scale of selective mining units. In this paper, global spatial entropy is used to assess the impact of spatial heterogeneity between ore and waste blocks on the magnitude of ore loss and dilution, while the local spatial entropy can guide the allocation of blast movement monitoring balls pre-blast. High values of the global spatial entropy indicate increasing potential of ore loss and dilution, which reduce profit. Furthermore, the study investigates the relationship between spatial entropy, cut-off grades, blast movement, dig-limits optimization model running time, and profit through a number of case studies. The results show that changes in cut-off grade and blast movement can significantly affect spatial entropy post-blasting and increase ore loss, dilution, and profit reduction, revealing the need for controlled blasting at specific bench sections. Additionally, the results demonstrate an exponential increase in profit reduction due to ore loss and dilution with a rising global spatial entropy.

By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

Polish coal mines are characterized by severe geological conditions and the co-occurrence of natural hazards. These hazards are associated with methane and dust emissions during mining processes which can provide methane, dust or methane-dust explosions. Besides, there are such natural hazards as gas and rock outbursts, rock bursts, spontaneous combustion of coal and environmental heat load. The mutual influences of various geological conditions, as well as the natural hazards, intensify the increase of the methane explosion hazard. The occurrence of methane explosions in the Polish mining industry between 2013 and 2108 are analyzed. Fatal accidents are compared with similar events in the global mining industry. The methods of preventing the explosion hazard as well as methane emission control in the Polish coal mining sector are presented. Methane hazard prevention should be adapted to levels and other natural hazards, especially those related to ventilation of underground mine. The methods of preventing methane emissions into mine excavations are often contrary to the means of preventing other ventilation-related hazards in the underground mine, e.g. the prevention of spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf of longwall panel. Therefore, the design of longwall panels should be preceded by a detailed analysis of the results of both methane emission prediction and forecast of other ventilation-related hazards.

"Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the installation and use of such a device on a SAG mill at the Holt-McDermott Mine. Comparison to measured static volumetric load and bearing pressure and inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed. INTRODUCTIONWhile the measurement of load is very important in all kinds of grinding applications, the biggest benefits are expected from AG and SAG milling. This is what motivated Holt-McDermott to take a closer look at this problem, with a view to optimizing SAG mill performance.In many cases, the SAG mill control problem can be stated as maximizing throughput while avoiding a volumetric overload, with the other constraints (e.g. power, grind size, upstream/downstream equipment constraints, etc.) playing a less important role. This is certainly true at Holt-McDermott where the SAG mill is the production bottleneck about 90% of the time, and anything that can be done to increase SAG mill throughput will have a significant impact on operating profit.Although the goal of maximizing throughput while avoiding volumetric overload is simple to state, it has proven to be much more difficult to achieve. The mineral processing industry has expended a great deal of time and effort to devise control strategies in the pursuit of this objective. While much progress has been made, there is still room for considerable improvement. Across the industry it is probably fair to say that overloads occur relatively infrequently, but the real losses accrue as a result of the tendency to run rather conservatively."

The Upper Freeport coal in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles, Pennsylvania, varies from a bony streak to a thick coal deposit often exceeding ninety inches, the "Double" or "Thick Freeport". Distinctive basal partings, a central bone layer, and a canneloid top bench may be present. The appearance of a sandstone roof, sandstone rolls, and bony coal at the top of the main coal bench can be anticipated in thin Freeport areas when basal partings are absent. When the two basal partings are present, a shale roof is normal. These effects are correlated with the original topography upon which the coal was deposited. The original depositional high areas tend to coincide with present structural highs. Preliminary data indicate that coal quality, in part, is affected by the deposi-tional setting. In "high" areas, a tendency exists for the main coal bench to contain higher percentages of fusain and mineral matter. Within limits, some-what higher ash fusion temperatures appear to correlate with paleotopographic highs. As a result of these findings, critical examination of the paleotopography and related sediments is indicated in other areas and other coals. The Upper Freeport coal is quite variable both in thickness and composition in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles of Pennsylvania (Figure 1). The coal horizon in these quadrangles is marked either by a thin carbonaceous shale bed or by a single bed containing a variable number of partings (binders). The complex coal zone known locally as the "Double" or "Thick Freeport" contains the Upper Freeport Coal Bed at the base; but in addition, it has an overlying bone layer and an upper coal bed occasionally capped with a canneloid layer. The "Thick Freeport" often exceeds 90 inches in thickness, whereas the normal Upper Freeport coal usually varies between 34 and 50 inches.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! "Exploration and development of mineral resources in developing countries by Canadian-based multinational mining companies is becoming increasingly common. One problem being encountered is that the objectives of the governments of developing countries can differ from those of developed countries. These objectives are not always consistent with maximizing returns from the projects, which can create conflicts between the mining company's responsibility to its shareholders and the desire to be a good corporate citizen. This article discusses how a mining tax regime can be designed to make the social goals of a government consistent with the economic goals of the company.IntroductionAt the recent International Seminar on Mining Taxation organized by CIM and the United Nations there was considerable discussion about the role of international mining companies operating in developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the diversity of backgrounds of individuals attending the Seminar, there were different opinions about what this role should be.Government PositionRepresentatives of governments pointed out the strong desires of their countries for technology, high-level technical training of their workforce, increased employment, and development of social infrastructure. They pointed out that, to a large extent, these objectives could be more efficiently met by mining companies operating in the country than by the governments themselves. For example, a multinational mining company (""MMC"") would have extensive knowledge of the various technologies available, and would have performed a detailed evaluation of the mineral resources before choosing the most cost-efficient technology for that project. They would, therefore be in an ideal position to assist the country in importing and developing such technology. Similarly, the company could provide opportunities for hands-on training, both at the technical and managerial levels, which would otherwise be unavailable to the government."

ELECTROSTATIC methods are used to separate and concentrate or purify granular particles derived from ores or various synthetic and agricultural products. Compared with other separation methods that require many technological refinements, the electrostatic attraction of fibers, grass, and seeds to charged surfaces clan be accomplished under the most primitive circumstances, and the early development of this method of beneficiation seemed very promising. Precise application of the method to provide high selectivity, however, is a complex procedure, and interest in this method declined. During this period Mr. O. C. Ralston initiated a Bureau of Mines research program oil electrostatic separation. It is the purpose of thins publication to describe the development of the electrostatic method of particle separation from the early beginning to the present resurgence of interest. Most of the information for this description bas been derived from references, a few of which were not available for thorough review. Much information has been drawn from the investitions of the Bureau. Acknowledgments Mr. O. C. Ralston, former Chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines, began the research program on the subject and did research on the mils literature. Both Mr. Ralston and Mr. H. B. Johnson, former president of the Huff Electrostatic Separator Co., furnished patent references. A critical review by Mr. F. D. Lamb, Research director, and Mr. M. J. The burning of coal without smoke is a problem that concerns the Government directly because of the advantages of smokeless combustion both in public buildings and on naval vessels. In addition, smoke abatement is a factor in conserving the fuel resources of the United States. Hence, as part of its general investigation of the best methods of utilizing the coals of this country, the Bureau of Mines, which is in charge of the fuel-testing work formerly carried on by the United States Geological Survey, has made extended tests to determine the conditions necessary for the smokeless combustion of bituminous coal in boiler furnaces. Bulletin 39,a a preliminary report, treats the smoke problem from a theoretical point of view, detailing the steps that are being taken by . municipalities, manufacturers, and citizens to abate smoke, also showing the possibility of a clean city. The present bulletin not only shows that bituminous coals high in volatile matter can be burned without smoke, but also that large plants carrying loads that fluctuate widely, where boilers over banked fires must be put into service quickly and fires forced to the capacity of their units, can be operated without producing smoke that is objectionable. Proper equipment, efficient labor, and intelligent supervision are the necessary factors.

This project, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Division of Environment, addresses two major subjects: refuse removal and subsidence monitoring. The refuse removal task consisted of developing a methodology for selecting the most economical combinations of coal mine breaker refuse and rock banks, disposal sites and material moving systems (trucks, trains, belt conveyers and pipelines). To prepare plans for moving refuse in the Lackawanna Valley of Northeastern Pennsylvania, refuse banks were inventoried, underground disposal sites identified and unit cost data prepared for the various material moving systems. The subsidence monitoring task consisted of defining the phenomenon of coal mine induced surface subsidence, establishing operational requirements, cataloging sensors and techniques to detect and measure subsidence and testing of the most promising techniques (photoelastic patch, tiltmeter, strain gage, microseismic and precise surveying). A preliminary system for a 700 acre area in Scranton utilizing 267 grid sensors, seven microseismic sensors and precise surveying techniques was designed with initial and annual operating costs determined. Two minor tasks supported both main subjects: zoning in the Northern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania and Technology Transfer of subsidence vulnerability prediction techniques.

A President, soon after he is appointed, sees looming ahead of him the Presidential Address; and in something approaching despair wonders what he can possibly talk about which might hold the interest of his audience. After various casts about, it occurred to me that perhaps prospecting, and more particularly prospecting in Australia, might provide a subject. This is because, 'in the first place, 'prospecting is passing from the stage of chance surface discovery to that of systematic search applying scientific methods to theproblems involved, and in the second, it is the section of the industry with which I have been concerned through much of my: working life. As it makes an address of this sort more interesting if it includes specific reference to actual experience, I hope you will bear with me in such references to actual prospecting as I may use to illustrate the argument. Prospecting has always carried the glamour of sudden wealth. The picture of the prospector engaged, perhaps for years, in fruitless search suddenly coming on riches beyondhis hopes is, deeply etched in the Australian imagination. In few other places has the fervour of prospecting run higher than it did in Victoria in the generation beginning little more than a century ago following the discovery of gold.People arrived from overseas in great numbers. Most of them proceeded to: the goldfields. They moved in thousands from new find to new find. In 'so doing' they determined much of the course of the State's development. The experience of prospectors led them to formulate all sorts of theories little impeded by awkward facts, to account for the apparently unpredictable occurrence of gold.The ideas which men followed, occasionally to success, and which they were prepared to back with all they had were strange and, various, many stories are told of them.

The first mention of gold in Western Australia was in 1848 when some specimens of copper ore, which are believed to have come from the Murchison district, were sent to Adelaide for assay. Gold was present in these specimens, but no particular interest seemed to be attached to this fact as the search at that time was mainly concentrated on base metals and coal. Interest appeared to be shown in gold in 1852 when several parties moved out eastwards from York looking for goldbearing country. Though these parties inmany cases were very near to what is now known as the Yilgarn Goldfield, nothing was found.The next record of gold was reported in some specimens which were brought in from Cardup, some 25 miles from Fremantle. Though this area was investigated, it would appear that all the gold had been contained in the specimens and nothing further was found, though the report had been the cause of a small rush of people interested in gold.From time to time specimens had been brought in by various people from the district east of Northam, and in 1861 a reward emanating from private sources was offered for the finding of gold within a radius of 150 miles from Perth. The Government at this stage took an interest in exploration for gold and in the same year supplemented this privately offered reward on a £ for £ basis. The Government also, about this time, commissioned a practical miner, with prospecting experience in the Eastern States, to examine the country between Albany and Northam with a view to the possible existence of goldbearing veins in that area. "An ideal procedure to determine the limits of flotation-based separation, as is the case with washability analysis for density separation, does not exist. Therefore, a procedure called release analysis, considered to be the counterpart of the washability process in density separation, was developed to evaluate the flotation characteristics of coal fines. Since flotation is a complex process it is necessary to know the maximum recoverable yield that could be achieved at a target ash level and what could be obtained by release analysis. Due to a number of limitations in the initial procedures, modifications were recommended by various researchers to generate an optimum separation curve. This paper presents a review of, and a discussion on, the chronological evolution of release analysis methodology over the decades. Notwithstanding the availability of a standardized release analysis procedure, such as BS 7530, the paper highlights the critical parameters involved in the procedures, such as coal type, feed characteristics, choice of reagents and dosage, operator bias, and design features of the flotation cell IntroductionCoal is a heterogeneous substance consisting of various combustible constituents (macerals) and associated mineral matter. The kind and abundance of the various macerals present in the coal, such as vitrinite, semivitrinite, exinite, and inertinite, determine the type of coal. As macerals are formed by biological degradation of different parts of the plant material, they have different properties based on their original composition. Coal cleaning processes are dependent on the differences in physical properties between the coal components (the macerals) and also between the macerals and the mineral matter. Thus the cleaning characteristics of the coal might vary from one type to the next. The cleaning processes influence the distribution and the concentration of macerals in the various size and density fractions of the cleaned product."

Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels).
