The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

Many industries, including mining, are experiencing an increase in the use of robotic and other artificial intelligence (AI) systems to improve efficiency, productivity and precision. For example, a 2023 survey showed that mining industry executives wanted to integrate more autonomous equipment to improve productivity and alleviate workforce shortages (Haas, 2024). This feedback was coupled with an increased appetite to advance the types and uses of automation and AI in the workplace. However, there is also an increasing concern about the ways that robotic applications may unintentionally affect worker safety. Humanmachine interaction poses potential risks, especially when industrial robots operate near workers in specific environments (such as drilling, handling and transporting materials, equipment inspection and lifting heavy loads). Research has explored the unintended consequences of introducing new technologies or processes in the workplace to include incidents such as being struck by equipment and challenges around data privacy (Lööw et al., 2019; Khurram et al., 2025; Haas and DuCarme, 2015; Almeaibed et al., 2021; Zio and Miqueles, 2024). More recently, the use of digital twin technologies and simulations (hereafter referred to as digital twin systems) has been boasted as a tool that can help prevent unintended consequences around worker safety by identifying and mitigating risks before a worker completes a task in tandem with a robot or other new technology. Digital twin systems produce a virtual replica of a physical environment or process (Almeaibed et al., 2021; Zio and Miqueles, 2024; Saes, 2024). To this end, this article explores the potential role of digital twin systems in enhancing safety within mining and other similar environments. It will primarily focus on environments where robots and human workers may interact, although digital twin systems can be useful with other technology applications. First, we define digital twins and digital simulation as components of a system. Then, we highlight possible applications of digital twin systems in mining to replicate real-world processes, followed by potential benefits of their use and where more research may be needed.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014. "The Porcupine area is in northern Ontario at the intersection of N. Lat. 48° 30' and 81° W. Long. It is 125 miles due north of the Sudbury nickel range. Practically all the mineral production of this area has come from the townships of Tisdale, Deloro, Whitney, and Ogden, in order of importance. The accompanying map of the Porcupine area and its extensions to the east and west (Fig. 4) has been included to show what I consider to be an essential objective of this paper, a perspective for exploration.The discovery of gold ore in the Porcupine area at such an early date resulted from the extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway and exploratory survey lines north into unexplored territory, for the early history of Porcupine is inextricably tied to the exploration along Niven's survey lines and the extension of the railway north from Cobalt to Nellie Lake. The following are the more significant events leading to the discovery of gold in Porcupine.1896-E. M. Burwash, employed by the Ontario Bureau of Mines, examined the country along Niven's base line and noted quartz veins that carried traces of gold. He was attached to Niven's survey party.1899-The late W. A. Parks reported on the geology of the portage route from Mattagami river to Night Hawk lake, for the Ontario Bureau of Mines. He noted the occurrence of gold in quartz veins and reported “I regard the region south of the trail to Porcupine lake as giving promise to the prospector"". He also was attached to Niven's survey party.1901-Charles Camsell, while prospecting for the Algoma Central railway, did some work on a vein occurrence carrying low gold on ground now known to be part of the Hollinger mine (3).1907- Extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway to Nellie Lake.1909- Bannerman followed up Indian story about occurrence of coal, and found iron formation. He remained to prospect and found the gold-bearing vein of the Scottish Ontario property."

WHAT proportion of the national wealth is represented by' the producing mines of the country?' Or by the- mining and metallurgical industry-as a whole, for it is impossible to make-an economic distinction between the mines that produce the ore and the plant that is used to get the metals from it. The total national wealth in fixed property is about $270,000,000,000. How much for the mines? I do not know that any one 'else has ever tried to furnish answers to these questions. In making such an attempt I am conscious that the result can be nothing more than a rough approximation. Yet even that will give an idea of relative values. No separate valuation for the mines of the country has appeared in any inventory of the national wealth previous to that which I compiled and published for 1916. -In earlier census estimates mines were supposed to be included under the head of real estate. However, an examination of the laws and practices of the several states with respect to mine taxation will make it evident that no good idea of the value of the mines of the coun¬try is obtainable from the assessment rolls. In my previous estimate for 1916, I computed the value of the mines at $8,000,000,000, which was approxi¬mately 10 times their net income as reported to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In making that estimate I fell grossly into error, for several reasons that it is unnecessary to explain, but chiefly because the net income of the mines of the country in that year was exceptionally large. The whole subject of valuing the mines of the country en bloc is extraordinarily difficult At the best, no one can hope to arrive at, anything more than a rough idea about it. However, elements of reason may be introduced and may be made to serve as chief bases.

Early History Probably the first use of nickel by man was in the fashioning of implements, and later swords, from nickel-bearing meteorites, masses of metal that have fallen from time to time at many points on the earth's surface and which consist normally of iron carrying substantial amounts of nickel. Meteorites were perhaps the first metal known to man. The falling star, sought out with fear overborne by curiosity, was found to be a better stone than the earth-given, truly a boon from the gods. Archeologists tell us there is good evidence that the ancient oriental peoples learned at an early date to make these stones into useful implements. The invincible blades of the great warriors of old in China, Persia, and in northern Europe, were Heaven-sent, a fable which sounds significant of meteoric iron. Probably some of the ancient swords of Khorassan and of Damascus were of meteoric nickel-bearing iron (1). Fifty centuries were to pass before men learned to isolate nickel and add it to iron to produce the same alloy for much the same purpose. Meanwhile, man had found another natural alloy of nickel, known first to the Chinese as paktong, or 'white copper.' It was obtained from complex copper-nickel sulphide ores of Yunnan in southern China. This metal was brought by caravan through India into Bactria, a country north of the Hindu-Kush mountains, in what is now known as Russian Turkestan. The earliest specimen extant is a Bactrian coin attributed to 235 B.C. The rough reddish-white metal was also sent in the form of triangular rings to Canton, where zinc ores were added and the whole smelted to a more malleable alloy, also known later as paktong. This alloy was the forerunner of German-or nickel-silver. Specimens of this alloy, wrought into ornamental candlesticks and boxes, were brought from Canton to Europe by the East India Company in the early days of the China trade. Paktong was highly prized for its beauty as well as its eastern origin in far-away China. By 1760 the unwrought metal was imported into England for domestic manufacture.

Introduction Tin continues to be as much a strategic metal as it was during the war. This situation is due to the fact that the tin mines in the major producing areas of Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies have not yet reached their pre-war production. Moreover, the world requirements for tin in certain fields, particularly in the food pack industries, are steadily increasing. At present, tin is still under International allocation by the Combined Tin Committee, of which Canada is a member nation. This Committee reviews periodically the availability of refined tin for export from the producing countries and makes allocations of tin to ensure equitable distribution to the consumer countries. In 1947, availability permitted an allocation of only 70 per cent of stated requirements. From 1935 to 1938 the price of tin in New York averaged 49 cents a pound and during the war the price in Canada was controlled under a subsidy programme at levels from 60 to 70 cents per pound. Just recently, this price has been raised to 96 cents. The value of the Canadian production amounts to about half a million dollars annually and the whole of this is obtained as a by-product of the lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine in British Columbia. In 1947 Canada's imports of tin were 3,961 long tons valued at over $6,000,000. In addition, tin plate to a value of $8,000,000 was imported from the United States; the tin content of this is estimated to be from 650 to 700 long tons. An increase in domestic production would, therefore, be of great national importance, and the present high price may make the search for and development of tin deposits more attractive than it has been in the past. Although no one can foretell what future prices will be, there is reason to believe that, unless there is a drastic downward revision of production costs, the price will be maintained at present levels for some years. A number of tin occurrences are known in Canada, but none of these have been developed for their tin content alone.

The results of designing, constructing, and laboratory testing of a modular, distributed, microprocessor-based mine monitoring and control system are presented. A standard computer communications protocol (DDCMP) was utilized throughout the system. Tests were performed on the utilization of a high-level language for programming mine monitoring and control systems. Laboratory tests were run on a combined air velocity/methane sensor.

The scope of this paper is such that it was deemed advisable to group the contents into several main sections. They are: Section 1. Geography and Geology. Section II. Historical Review. (a) Mining and Smelting in Alabama. (b) Milling. (c) Summary of Milling Research. These two sections are primarily a bibliography and summary of the research on the Birmingham Red Mountain ores up to the middle 1040's. Section III. Status of the Birmingham Iron Industry. This sect ion points out the extent to which the findings of the iron-ore research have been applied on a commercial scale. Also, a very brief description of the dependent and allied industries is included. The value of the Birmingham iron ore is greatly enhanced by the proximity of coal and dolomite. Thus the coal and coke industry and the dolomite industry are closely allied with and to a large extent dependent upon the possibilities of economic utilization of the Red Mountain iron ores. Section IV. Beneficiation Investigations of the Red Mountain Iron Ores. This is a record of the most recent, hitherto unpublished work of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the chemical and physical composition not only of the Big seam but of most of the iron-bearing rock strata of Red Mountain.

Mining of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district, Alabama, has _gone on energetically for the past 50 years and has created a large iron and steel manufacturing center, the only important one in the South. The district produces about 10 per cent of all the iron ore mined in the United States and 80 per cent of the Alabama output is red ore ; moreover 43 of the 419 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham and produce 7 per cent of the pig-iron output. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible by investigations that have led to radical changes in furnace practice; studies of methods by which the low-grade, highsilica ores may be treated by concentration 1 will give still greater impetus to development. The· mode of occurrence of the ore has made mining practice comparatively simple, but with the rapid extension of the workings underground and the disturbed condition of the ore bed some distance from the outcrop, conditions tend to become more difficult. Stoping, handling, support, drainage, and ventilation are all affected, sometimes favorably and sometimes adversely, by the extended workings and increased depth of cover. Should beneficiatioil make available the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam, mining practice must necessarily be adapted to the new conditions and will be rendered more difficult as the weight of cover increases at long distances from the outcrop. The support of workings will require more attention as the weight of cover increases, and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely upon improvements in mining and handling the ore.

The majority of the regulations in Part 75 for underground coal mines have been in effect since March of 1970, almost nine years now. Although there have been some additions each year in specific areas where the need became apparent or the statute required some action, the bulk was promulgated on March 28, 1970 for the purpose of clarifying the statutory provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Many of those regulations were derived from the Federal Mine Safety Code, or from experience gained by the Bureau of Mines in the enforcement of Public Law 552. Upon passage of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, these same regulations remained in effect and the statutory requirements of the Act placed a responsibility upon the Secretary of Labor to promulgate additional regulations in specific areas not previously covered. The Federal inspectorate has received formal training at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in the proper application of the regulations, as well as routine retraining and special training courses subsequent to the promulgation of new regulations. With some exceptions, the vast majority of these regulations are nothing more than good mining practice. Basically, the regulatory problems are two-fold. There are a few specific regulations that, under certain circumstances, compliance is nearly, if not actually, impossible. There is non-uniform application of enforcement of regulations by the inspectorate based on opinions developed from personal experience of inspectors or lack of experience. The record is replete with examples of overzealous inspectors applying regulations that either do not exist or have been stretched far beyond the intent of the regulations.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the efficient operation of a tailings dewatering circuit comprising a thickener and filter press through proper control and automation. It is common to see thickeners and filter press circuits each with their own control systems. This can cause multiple issues when trying to increase efficiency and reliability of the tailings management process. By automating the thickener and filter press controls, you are eliminating any delays and inconsistencies caused by human error and process variations. When done properly the system can maintain a consistent product as the feed characteristics change. Previously, operators would have to monitor the process parameters and adjust the system accordingly. This can now be accomplished using state of the art process control equipment that continuously monitors and adjusts critical variables using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) loops. The paper will detail the control theory used to maintain these systems, highlight other benefits of having a fully integrated plant such as predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics as well as present examples of how these have been implemented in field examples.CITATION:Baxter, M, Cunningham, R, Williams, R and Zink, D, 2018. It is estimated that substandard ground support installations and elements cost the Rio Tinto Copper Group millions of dollars between 2000 and 2014. These issues have also created significant safety and financial risks in Rio Tinto mines. As a result, Rio Tinto Copper has developed CaveCAD, an integrated system to collect, store and analyse all ground support-related data. The CaveCAD system stores geotechnical data and has the ability to automatically import data, collect data through tablet applications, report processed/analysed data and present this data through 3D visualisation software.The CaveCAD Ground Support module closes the design–implementation–verification loop by providing a method of verifying the compliance of all installed ground support, recording manufacturer specifications, recording quality control test compliance and rectifying any non-conformant areas. The module uses innovative technology to create value through cost saving, safety improvements and data collection efficiency. Cost savings will be achieved by a decreased need for excavation rehabilitation, less ‘waste’ due to faulty installation and quality assurance checks reducing the likelihood of substandard support units being used. This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

Mining operators are faced with complex information delivered by technology-centric rather than user-centric systems. The ability to achieve high situation awareness (SA) in the face of this data overload is a key challenge for effective decision making and information exploitation. Incidents that result in loss of revenue and even life, and compromise safety that are attributed to human error are often the result of system designs that overload human cognitive capabilities. This paper focuses on defining SA as it relates to mining operations and presents methods for improving SA through a scientific approach for electric shovel operator user interface development.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

The prospect of obtaining high-grade concentrates from Canadian pyrochlore ores is rather unlikely, and experimental beneficiation pro-cesses ?appear to have yielded products in the range of 3 to 20 per cent N'b205? A possible solution of the problem is to find an economical chemical method for recovering high-purity Nb2?05 from such concentrates. A technically feasible but economically unproved process is outlined in this paper, in which the concentrate is decomposed by an acid attack and the oxides of niobium and tantalum are isolated and then separated by liquid-liquid extraction. The solution of the ore is adjusted to 7 M HF-5 M HNO3 and the niobium and tantalum are extracted from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone. The mixed oxides of niobium and tantalum are recovered from the oxdanic phase and dissolved in 0.5 M HF-1.0 M HNO3. Tantalum is extracted preferentially from this solution with methyl isobutyl ketone, leaving niobium in the aqueous phase. By the use of this process it is possible to produce niobium pentoxide and tantalum pentoxi.de in 99.5 per cent purity with a recovery of approximately 95 'per cent, under lab-oratory conditions.

The purpose of this project was to compare two underground, batch coal haulers ? battery haulers and shuttle cars ? in order to determine the more viable machine to implement. The specific standards for battery haulers were investigated and compared to the requirements of shuttle cars in order to identify the unnecessary expenses related to the legal requirements that are attached to the machines. Costs such as running costs, capital costs, and maintenance costs were researched and compared over a typical life of machine. Average production rates and breakdown times were obtained and used to determine which machine would be more reliable in achieving the required annual production.
