Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature, and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68 °C and 141 °C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system, and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature, and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

A continuous flowing paper electrophoresis cell was used to separate petroleum and petroleum extracts into characteristic patterns. The electrophoresis of Bachaquero, Lagunillas, Boscan, and Gibson petroleums in nitro-benzene and acetic acid-based electrolytes was investigated. The extent of separation in the patterns was studied by measuring the metal and porphyrin contents of the effluents. Qualitative separations were achieved in some systems, whereas either system demonstrated only a high degree of electrophoretic migration.

There are huge benefits for mining operations that have a well-defined maintenance program that is understood and followed across the total operation. But for operations lacking a quality maintenance program, there is equal assurance that nearly every major maintenance problem can be traced to this omission. Few problems will be permanently corrected until such a program is implemented. Definition The maintenance program re-quires the interaction of all mine departments. Initially, the production department will request work and the maintenance department will identify work, principally through preventive maintenance inspection and testing efforts. Maintenance will then classify the new work to determine the best way to respond. Maintenance will plan selected major jobs to enable its crews to carry them out more effectively. Maintenance will schedule the planned work with operations. Supervisors will assign all types of work to their crews then, control the work through effective supervision. As work is completed, maintenance will measure the work using an accurate information system. Next, it will assess overall accomplishments against goals such as performance standards or budgets. In addition, the pro-gram would prescribe a means to evaluate every aspect of the operation as it affects maintenance so that necessary improvements or changes can be identified, prioritized and acted on. Such evaluations should be part of a mine-wide continuous improvement effort. A well-defined maintenance program is one of the best investments a mining operation can make to assure its profitability. Educating the total operation on the pro-gram assures long-term dividends from the investment.

In recent years, concern about environmental issues has become a parameter to consider in the projects in engineering. In order to reduce the impact that the tire improper disposal may result for the environment, we sought a solution to this problem. This article proposes the use of rubber scrap tires as fine aggregate in concrete production. The material produced was analyzed by a bending test, resulting in product quality, in particular for application in situations requiring a more ductile material.

This case history for three major additions to a tire manufacturing plant in north Georgia discusses the impact of highly variable Karst (sinkhole) geology on both foundation design and construction. For Phase 3, alternatives were considered for a heavily loaded mixing tower with up to 2,000 kip column loads. A non-traditional approach of using auger cast piles was adopted. To satisfy a risk-averse Owner, a pile load testing program including strain gauges was conducted. One test pile was cored full depth to demonstrate effective bearing on steeply inclined rock. For Phase 4, similar methodology was used at another critical mixing tower structure associated with that phase and the installation procedure was refined to reduce grout take. In Phase 5 construction, another mixing tower and the equipment pits were supported on auger cast piles. After pile installation, a sinkhole opened up between two equipment pits. Remedial grouting was performed. Development also required construction of a R&D building over a 96 inch diameter RCP storm sewer. Auger cast piles were used to support the building to avoid overstressing the existing pipe and risk separating joints. This case history outlines lessons learned while constructing auger cast piles in Karst and proving quality was built into the foundations.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX, indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and alack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for the low PGM recoveries experienced. Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. Evaluations were made on former block caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia (IOZ, GBT Area I and II) in order to design a more appropriate support system. As a permanent support, the thread bar bolt support system is widely used in the DOZ mine. The advantages of this system are ease of operation, quality control and high bond strength. The main problem of this system is the curing time of about 28 days to achieve maximum strength, necessitating the installation of a temporary support for its implementation. In this instance, the system was inefficient in operation and studies were required to find an alternative grouting system. This paper examines the evaluation of thread bar bolt support system and compares the performance of two types of grouting (resin cartridge and cement cartridge) with cement grouting performance. The evaluation is conducted with a pull out test. The advantages and disadvantages for each grouting method, comparison of cost estimation and grouting application in mine scale are presented in this paper.

Banded iron-formation (BIF) and iron ores were measured using the CSIRO developed TIRHyLogger ™ to assess its ability to map quartz, carbonates and riebeckite. The TIR-HyLogger™ measures continuously spectral refl ectance data from diamond drill core or drill chips with a high spatial and spectral resolution. Samples from twelve BIF, bedded iron deposits (BID) and channel iron deposits (CID) have been analysed. The spectral data were processed with two different approaches. The first approach, focused on the identifi cation of the major minerals, was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). It identified four minerals (quartz, ankerite, riebeckite and goethite) and provided pure spectra called end-members. The second approach included a mineral diagnostic spectral feature extraction involving wavelength position, relative peak heights and relative depths of absorptions. Quartz has a diagnostic absorption at 8.625 µm and ankerite shows a refl ectance peak at 11.275 µm. In addition to the identified end-members, two carbonate populations (calcite and siderite) and two silica species (quartz and amorphous silica) were identified.

Lieutenant Gorman was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1888, and after preliminary education at Ottawa University and the Ottawa Collegiate Institute, he graduated from McGill University in 1913, as a mining engineer. After graduation, Mr. Gorman spent several months in a tour of Europe. The year 1909 was occupied at one of the Canadian graphite mines, and the summer of 1911 he spent with the Granby Mining, Smelting & Power Co., Ltd. At the time of his admission to the Institute, in 1914, he was sampler with the Dome mines at South Porcupine, Ontario. His next engagement was at the Creighton mine, Ontario, but in 1916 he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and went to England. A letter written by Major Ritchie, commanding the Second Tunnelling Company, to Lieut. Gorman's mother, contains the following words. Tommy was lulled at our headquarters by a nine-inch shell which struck the officers' quarters. The Hun had been shelling a small village close to the camp with a long-range gun and a shot fell into our camp. Tom was killed instantly by the concussion. He mas buried this morning with Military Honours in the military cemetery close to our camp. Tommy was an efficient officer and a good soldier and his loss is very keenly felt by the officers and men of this unit. Lieutenant William Hague William Hague, First Lieutenant Co. F, 116th Regiment of Engineers, and a member of the Institute since 1906, died of pneumonia in France, on Jan. 1, 1918. Lieutenant Hague was born in Orange, N. J., Mar. 31, 1882, the son of the late James D. Hague, a distinguished mining engineer and a life member of the Institute, and Mary Ward (Foote) Hague, of Guilford, Conn. He attended Milton Academy, Milton, Mass., and was graduated from Harvard in the class of 1904. He was a nephew of the late Arnold Hague, of the United States Geological Survey. Seven years ago he married Elizabeth Stone, of Milton, who with their son, James D. Hague, six years old, survives him. Lieutenant Hague's mining career began immediately after his graduation from Harvard, when he went to Bisbee, Ariz., to be a surveyor's helper in the mines of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. In 1905, he became an instrument man, being engaged on the construction work of the Copper Queen smelting plant at Douglas, Ariz. Twelve years ago, the Director of the United States Geological Survey addressed to the Secretary of the Interior a letter calling attention to the government's need for liquid fuel for naval use and pointing out that the rate of increase in demand was more rapid than the increase in production.' This letter, in a way, inaugurated the policy of public oil-land withdrawals, which was well founded in its primary purpose of protecting the oil industry and highly desirable in its immediate effect of checking the over-development of that day in California. Unfortunately, however, through delays in legislation, this policy may be regarded now as having outlived both its intent and its usefulness. In 1908, the country's production of oil was 178,500,000 bbl., and there was a surplus above consumption of more than 20,000,000 bbl. available to go into storage. In 1918, 10 years later, the oil wells of the United States yielded 356,000,000 bb1.—nearly twice the yield of 1908—but to meet the demands of the increased consumption more than 24,000,000 bbl. had to be drawn from storage. Nor is this all of the brief comparison. In 1918, our excess of imports over exports of crude petroleum was nearly 33,000,000 bbl. whereas in 1908 we exported 3,500,000 bbl., which was net, as we had not begun to import Mexican oil. In this period, the annual fuel-oil consumption of the railroads alone has increased from 16,871,000 to 36,714,000 bbl.; the annual gasoline production from 540,000,000 gal. to 3,500,000,000 gal. This record may be taken not only as justifying the earlier appeal for Federal action, but as warranting deliberate attention to the oil problem of today. Need of Future Supply The position of the United States in regard to oil can best be characterized as precarious. Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco represent more then ninety per cent of Zimbabwe?s ferrochrome smelting capacity, while Maranatha and Oliken contribute the difference. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

"One of the major commercially viable secondary sources of rare earths elements (REE) are the ion-adsorption ores, containing 0.05-0.3 wt% rare earth oxides physically adsorbed on the surface of clay minerals formed during weathering of lanthanide-rich rocks. Although ion-adsorption deposits are substantially lower grade than other types of rare earth sources, this is offset by the easier mining and processing costs and the low content of radioactive elements. The conventional extraction route involves ion exchange leaching with monovalent cation solutions (usually ammonium sulphate) under ambient conditions; during the process, the lanthanides are desorbed and transferred into solution, being replaced by the exchange cation. While ammonium ions are known to perform best, there is increased environmental motivation to investigate alternative lixiviants in order to minimize ammonium sulphate impact via reducing its use without considerable loss in rare earth recovery.The objective of the present research was to screen various cations salts (alkaline and alkalineearth metals present as sulphates, chlorides and acetates, respectively) in order to comparatively evaluate lanthanide desorption levels and provide a theoretical base of the observed behaviour. The overall aim is to gain a better understanding of how both cation and anion may affect the overall REE recovery from ores in order to provide alternative processing routes. The distinct exchange capabilities of cations were explained in terms of differences in cation hydration enthalpy within the same group, i.e. Cs+ > NH4 + > K+ > Na+ > Li+ and Ba2+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+. For the same cation, it was determined that REE extraction efficiency follows the order sulphate > acetate > chloride, based on dissimilarities in constants of formation values. Various process implications scenarios will be described based on using mixed cations and anion matrices."

Con­tractors, engineers, suppliers and equipment developers, and especially owners, each can contribute and benefit from a revaluation of attitudes and contacts from planning to final payment. The Deep Foundations Institute was initiated with this as its major purpose. The help of educators is essential to promote this with the next generation. The Association of Soils and Foundations Engineers has developed guides for "Mediation Arbi­tration of Construction Contracts."

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States continued to decline during 1950, and according to the Bureau of Mines annual refinery capacity survey there were 357 refineries January 1, 1951, compared with 367 a year ago. The total throughput capacity increased 267,344 barrels daily during the year to 6,963,644 barrels daily as of January 1, 1951, continuing the trend of the past several years to increase the throughput capacity of the refineries and decrease the number of plants. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1950 from 18,246 barrels daily to 19,506. The Indiana-Illinois refinery district accounted for 110,175 barrels, or 41 percent of the total crude-oil capacity increase, the Oklahoma-Kansas district, 17 percent, the California district, 14 percent, the East Coast district, 13 percent, and the Louisiana Gulf Coast district, 12 percent. Slight declines ill crude-oil capacity were reported in the Texas Inland, Texas Gulf Coast, New Mexico, And Appalachian refinery districts. The 160,100 barrels of additional crude-oil capacity that was building January 1, 1951, represents an increase of 10 percent over the year earlier figure. The only completely new refinery listed as under construct ion at the beginning of 1951 is located at Superior, Wisconsin. Other new construction involves enlargement of existing refineries. Plans for at least five additional new refineries are under consideration, and construction is expected to begin during the current year.

Flow field hydrodynamics of serpentine flow channels was investigated numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The velocity profile simulated by the CFD model was evaluated with respect to experimental results from the literature. Rectangular and tapered flow channels were compared with respect to mixing and water management capabilities, and pressure drop. The CFD model was further developed to account for electrochemical reaction on the cathode side to determine which channel configuration was most effective in reactant conversion. The velocity profile differences between the channels were found to impact reactant conversion, as the rectangular channel had the highest conversion. With respect to water management, although the tapered channel was found to have a higher overall pressure drop, the rectangular channel was found to have higher shear and pressure forces acting on simulated liquid water droplets in the channel.

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is an inhalation health hazard for mining and industrial work environments and must be monitored. We provide theoretical analysis of real-time measurements for determining RCS mass concentration without the use of filters by using photoacoustic spectroscopy. The suspended dust in the mine air can be continuously sampled by the photoacoustic instrument. A tunable quantum cascade laser is the light source, allowing for determination of interferences such as kaolinite, coal dust, and water vapor. The most useful spectral region is found to be between 11 and 13 μm. Absorption by water vapor, and, to a lesser extent, carbon dioxide, in this spectral region has gaps that allow for quantification of the aforementioned dust species as well as a convenient check on the calibration of the instrument. This work brings photoacoustic measurement of aerosol to the mid infrared range where spectrally dependent light absorption can be used to quantify dust composition and mass concentration.

In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. (24" C.), while the average temperature in some of the drifts and crosscuts is 92" I?. (33.5" C.). As the orebodies lie at varying distances from the hoisting shafts,
