The term ball clay is applied to plastic sedimentary clays that have a high content of kaolinite and that possess white firing properties and high green strength (Mitchell and Stentiford, 1973). However, the name ball clay is not derived from any specific property of the clay. Instead, it comes from the original method of production in southwestern England (Scott, 1929). From open pits, the clay was cut into cubes with hand tools. The sides of the cubes were about 220 to 250 mm (9 to 10 in.) and weighed 14 to 16 kg (30 to 35 lb.). The eventual rounding of the corners with handling before sale gave rise to the term ball clay. Ball clays provide the workability and green strength required by the whiteware section of the world's ceramic industry. The main applications are in the sanitaryware, tile and tableware sectors. Each, though, requires particular technical properties in the ball clay component. The clay has to be as white firing as possible for all applications. However, for sanitary-ware, the rheological properties are most important. For tableware, fired whiteness and freedom from specking are the main criteria. Tiles need a reasonable green strength but the clay also needs to be cost-effective. The technical properties of the individual clays in any deposit depend on the clay mineral assemblage. This, in turn, depends on the geological formation of the deposits. Hence, it is the latter that largely determines the market sector for which the clay blends from a particular deposit are suited. Formation of ball clays Ball clays are formed from three main components - kaolinite, micaceous minerals and quartz - while carbonaceous material is also often present. The crystallinity of the kaolinite and mica varies. There are also occasional minor occurrences of feldspar, chlorite, montmorillonite andmixed. layer minerals. Marcasite, siderite and anatase also occur in small amounts. The properties of the clay depend on its mineralogical composition and its particle size distribution, particularly in the lowest size ranges. The original source rocks and the environment of deposition of the clay are the controlling factors. The importance of weathering processes in the formation of ball clays has long been recognized (Bristow, 1968). The diversity of source rocks produces considerable variation in the clay minerals formed. Therefore, each deposit is unique, with time-related variation within it. The greatest development of a weathering mantle takes place in a tropical climatic environment. Plant remains confirm that most ball clay deposits were formed under hot and wet conditions. Sedimentation of the clays had to be in fresh or low salinity water or clay minerals detrimental to whiteware manufacture would have been formed. Fresh water traps for the ball clay, sand and lignite sequences depended -on tectonic features, such as basin development along fault zones or lakes and lagoons on the edge of a large scale embayment. In order for Philippines Associated Smelting and Refining Corporation (PASAR) Corporation to remain a leader in the copper smelting and refining industry, continuous improvements in plant technology are required. Reliable performance of plant equipment is essential for a competitive smelting operation. PASAR is constantly searching for the best equipment and technology to allow us to manufacture products more efficiently. When the Smelter was commissioned in 1993, the Flash Furnace off-gas treatment system was a constant source of problems. There were frequent shut-downs of the electrostatic precipitator due to material buildups on the discharge electrodes and collecting plates. In 1998, the precipitator was successfully upgraded to eliminate the buildup problems and to increase the collection efficiency. The upgrade greatly reduced down time and maintenance, and the enhanced collection efficiency also eliminated pluggage problems and material losses in the Acid Plant. This extensive precipitator upgrade was accomplished during a 30-day Smelter turnaround.

A systematic study of groundwater conditions at eight underground mine sites exhibiting a wide range of groundwater qualities throughout Australia has been completed at the WA School of Mines. This has resulted in a new corrosivity classification for groundwater driven corrosion processes for cement grouted cable strand used in the Australian underground mining industry. The new corrosivity classification is simple to use and corrosion rates may be predicted from readily obtained in situ measurements of groundwater dissolved oxygen.

In January 1989, Western Mining Corporation (WMC) acquired the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward orebodies and associated infrastructure from the Agnew Mining Company (AMC). AMC had closed the operation in August 1986 and it had been on care and maintenance since that time. To return the operation to full production as quickly as possible it was planned to mine the Rocky's Reward orebody by opencut mining and treat this ore whilst the underground Perseverance workings were rehabilitated. Removal of overburden from Rocky's Reward thus commenced immediately with a target of April 1989 for delivery of the first ore to the concentrator. Extensive rehabilitation and upgrading of the concentrator commenced in late January, and continued in stages for an 18 month period. The first stage consisted of overhauling all existing equipment and completing a crusher upgrade commenced by AMC prior to the mine closure. During this period, it was necessary to recruit a workforce and re-establish all the required support structure. In late April the plant commenced commissioning trials on mullock. The first ore was crushed on the 11th May 1989 and concentrate produced the following day. From May 1989 to June 1990 the plant was producing nickel concentrate whilst further upgrading continued. During this period, the flotation capacity was tripled by installation of a bank of eight Wemco 144L flotation cells in rougher-scavenger duties and two 12 metre by 2 metre diameter columns in cleaning duties. The existing vacuum drum filters were replaced by two Larox PF32 pressure filters, eliminating the need for solar drying and allowing the flash drier to be fed direct from the filters. These, along with a major borefield expansion and further work to the crusher increased the nominal plant capacity from 600,000 to 1,000,000 t/yr. The plant achieved the 1,000,000 t/yr rate in April 1990.

The purpose of the work leading to this report was two-fold: (1) To determine the properties of cemented tungsten carbide modified by the addition of one, two, and five percent of titanium diboride, and (2) to compare the properties of these mixtures when sintered, hot-pressed, and flash-welded (resistance-sintered). Minor additions of titanium diboride to mixtures of 94 percent WC and 6 percent Co decrease mechanical strength but increase oxidation resistance in proportion to the amount of the addition. One percent of titanium diboride increased the hardness by 2 Rockwell A units. Hot-pressing produced compacts with the highest density and the best mechanical strength, but losses of cobalt were high and grain growth was pronounced.

MUCH has been published on the general subject of metal mine ventilation but, so far as I can discover, few specific data on selection of fan equipment to meet the requirements of a given mine ventilation problem are available. This article is intended to point out some of the more important considerations which influence the selection of such equipment. It will be assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the quantity of air which is necessary in the various parts of his mine to produce the required results and the pressure in inches water gage needed to circulate this quantity of air through the mine. There may be instances in which this assumption is not justified, but the fact remains that, with proper engineering talent, these data can be approximated sufficiently close for practical purposes.

Drilled shafts for many situations offer an economical alternative to driven piles. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has spent considerable time and money in research and developing design and construction guidelines for drilled shafts. However, the full potential of the technology may not be realized because of the uncertainty of the effects of construction on the actual service behavior and the lack of either reliable quality control tests to check for or evaluate defects, or inexpensive load test procedures. Static load testing is very expensive and it is not feasible to load test each shaft on a project. Therefore, other means are necessary to confirm or evaluate the integrity of the completed drilled shaft or to determine the capacity of the completed shaft.

"The Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (ToF-SIMS) is unique in that it measures the outermost atomic layers of any material. The technique is particularly suited for determining surface chemical composition of mineral particles. It is most commonly used as a diagnostic tool to measure mineral surface chemical variability in plant and bench top flotation separation processes. Recently, research towards understanding the full capability of the instrument has resulted in the development of new diagnostic applications related to various Au extraction technologies and the development of the ToF-SIMS as a predictive tool for assessing the chemical reactivity of the ore.In this paper we will present a brief review of the ToF-SIMS technique with recent advances in instrumentation and methodologies including:•,?recent developments and advances towards a semi-quantitative approach to the evaluation of mineral surface modifiers (ex. Cu),•,?flotation case studies investigating activator, depressant and collector loading variability within a flotation process,•,?the recently developed chemical reactivity test which we believe has the potential to predict the behaviour of minerals in a flotation test in response to chemical transfer during grinding,•,recent applications for determination of surface Au preg-robbed in carbonaceous materials.A portion of this material has been recently presented at the COM 2009 meeting and at SIMS XVII (see Dimov et al 2009 and Hart et al, 2009).INTRODUCTIONIn flotation seperation surface chemistry is the principal determinant for selective separation of the various mineral phases (Ralston, 1994, Smart et al, 2003). Determination of this hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance by particle therefore requires correct identification and selection of the particular mineral phase(s) followed by a statistical analysis of the surface chemical characteristics of the particles with an estimation of the spread of values (Smart et al, 2003)."

The nickel laterite industry is divided into two camps when it comes to the grade of the ferronickels produced. One group, led by Falcondo and Cerro Matoso, markets high-grade ferronickels in the range of 35 to 40% nickel, while another group, led by SLN and the Japanese smelters, favour lower grades in the range of 20 to 25%. Because the ores processed by these smelters vary widely in terms of nickel content and iron to nickel ratios, it is probably more accurate to classify these smelters in terms of their iron recovery: Falcondo and Cerro Matoso smelt at lower reduction potentials and thus recover only 15 to 30% of the iron in their ores, while SLN and the Japanese smelters are very reducing and recover 45 to 65% of their iron. Low reductions generally imply higher slag losses and lower nickel recoveries, but also lower power and reductant requirements; higher reductions, the reverse. The question is, therefore, whether an economically optimum ferronickel grade exists for processing any given ore. This paper proposes a methodology for determining this optimum grade and concludes that nickel laterite smelters should favour low reductions and production of high-grade ferronickels.

Since 1950, the traditional process has been dominating the production of lithium compounds from spodumene ores to sustain the lithium market because of its economic viability and the markets need for technical grade (99.5% purity) product. This traditional process includes thermal conversion, acid roasting and lithium leaching. However, this process has not been challenged and very few studies have tried to explain its limitation (95% lithium yield) or optimize the thermal treatment. Here, α to β spodumene conversion and lithium extraction were performed in a rotary kiln on a 2 mm to 2 cm spodumene concentrate instead of a micrometric one using a 1050 °C, 30 min conversion treatment and 250 °C, 30 min, 30% H2SO4 excess leaching treatment. X-Ray Diffraction analyses were performed on the converted material to determine the conversion rate by Rietveld analysis. It was observed after thermal treatment that the α-spodumene particles fractured and divided while the impurities remained compact. A sifting was performed after thermal treatment and it was determined that 65% of the initial mass became finer than 180 μm. X-Ray diffraction analyses and lithium content measurement were performed on both fractions and it was determined that the finer fraction had a very high lithium content of 3.24 wt%. Lithium extractions were performed on both fractions separately. While the coarser fraction’s lithium yield was only 61% the finer fraction’s lithium yield went up to 99% without any additional treatment. These observations may open more economical ways for the traditional process by potentially bypassing two third of costly steps such as grinding.

Rapid 3D characterization of multiphase mineral particles in a variety of mineral processing applications is described, including: mineral liberation analysis, grain size, mineral exposure analysis, particle damage, and pore network structure for fluid flow simulation in heap leaching. While micro X-ray computed tomography systems (microCTs) have been used for many years, industrial adoption is limited due to a variety of reasons, including insufficient resolution, the general lack of imaging contrast to differentiate different mineral phases within a multiphase mineral particle and the lack of automated 3D mineral processing software. For example, resolution with industrial CTs and desktop microCT is of the order of tens of microns to a few microns at best, depending on specimen size and CT configuration. We describe a novel lab-based X-ray microscope, XRM, which overcomes these resolution and contrast limitations, notably as the industry is going towards finer grains and more complex ore bodies. Using lens-based optics and detectors (similar to its XRM counterpart in synchrotron beam lines), resolution of the lab based system is in the submicron range with contrast better than conventional microCTs. Hence, visualization, differentiation and segmentation of most mineral phases of interest to the industry are now feasible. Coupling these high resolution and high contrast tomography images with a suite of customized 3D segmentation algorithms and analysis software, applications in mineral liberation analysis for process control, particle damage assessment and other mineral processing applications can be achieved. This non invasive 3D technique which requires relatively little sample preparation is currently being considered for coal, industrial minerals, and base/precious metal ores, complementing existing microscopy techniques such as QEMSCAN and MLA for a variety of applications

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

Interface levels in flotation columns are generally measured with the aid of a pressure-sensitive Instrument, e.g. a differential-pressure cell. This paper criticizes the use of this type of measurement, and discusses other methods that are claimed to give more accurate measures of interface levels. The paper focuses on the development of methods based on the measurement of conductivity across the froth-slurry interface. These are often sabotaged by variations in the conductivity of the feed slurry, particularly when the pH of the slurry IS being controlled, e.g. In sulphide flotation. Methods of improving the accuracy and reliability of this technique are described. The result IS a robust, easy-to maintain level-control scheme that successfully rejects large disturbances in plant operation (including a 5:1 change in slurry conductivity) while controlling levels to an accuracy of I 4 cm.

The U.S. is officially represented in ITA by UCA of SME. (Part one is in T&UC, June 2007, pp 39-42) Tunnel advances in 1960s and 1970s The 1960s and 1970s were active and productive times for the U.S. tunneling industry. During that time, federal programs, sponsored by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT) and the Advanced Research Projects Administration (ARPA), stimulated tunnel research and development. Also, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and SME collaborated to create the Underground Construction Research Council (UCRC) and the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) series.

"A numerical analysis and water model study of the mold region of a continuous casting apparatus was performed with a novel injection concept using swirling flow in the pouring tube, to control the heat and mass transfer in the continuous casting mold.As a result, the following results were found:1) By changing swirl strength, it is easy to control the flow pattern as well as the direction of the flow.2) Uniform velocity distribution can be obtained within a very short distance from the outlet of the nozzle.3) Heat and mass transfer near the meniscus can be remarkably activated compared with a conventional straight type immersion nozzle without swirl.4) Swirl helps the superheat in the melt dissipate.S) Penetration depth of nozzle outlet flow is decreased remarkably by the application of swirling.6) For the case without swirl, the peak of the flow moves near the mold-wall with flowing down from the outlet of the nozzle due to the Coanda-effect. On the other hand, peak of the flow moves near the mold axis with flowing down from the nozzle-outlet within considerable short distance, namely axi-symmetric velocity distribution can be obtained within very short distance from the nozzle-outlet.Those findings mentioned above are very useful to control the flow pattern in the billet and bloom continuous casters."

En este sentido, dicha Cordillera constituye una franja de yacimientos polimetálicos de zinc, oro, plomo, plata y cobre, los cuales se estructuran sobre yacimientos filonianos y tipo estrato ligado. Asimismo, los filones no tienen preferencia de roca para su minetalización, los mantos se ubican en horizontes calcáreos del Cretáceo. Asimismo se describe la extensión, fisiografía, estratigrafía y los yacimientos de contacto.
