Red lake is a body of water some thirty miles in length lying about forty miles northwest of the outlet of Lac Seul. It forms one of several large lake expansions on a river which enters the English river from the north, twenty miles below Lac Seul. Before the construction of the National Transcontinental railway a long canoe journey was necessary to reach that part of the English river, and Red lake, two days travel beyond, was one of the furthest outposts of the trading companies in that difficultly accessible triangle of country between Lake Winnipeg, James Bay and the English and Albany rivers. The Hudson's Bay Company post at Red lake is said to be one of the earliest established in the district but there are no records at the post, and as the English and Albany rivers never were used to any great extent as travel routes there is no mention of the place in the diaries of any of the early explorers. Dr. Bell passed through Red lake on his excursion to the Berens river country in 1883, and a brief note mentions that Huronian rocks were seen. To Dr. Dowling, however, belongs the credit for the first thorough description of this basin of sediments and basic volcanics. In 1893 he followed the course of Dr. Bell's trip, of ten years previous, through Red lake to the upper part of the Berens river.

"IntroductionAlthough iron formations were recognized in western New Brunswick about 1820, commercial production was not achieved until 1848. The Jacksonville deposits near Wood stock were developed first, and ore was treated at a blast furnace constructed 5 km to the southeast on the Saint John River. Several charcoal burners were also constructed. Pig iron was produced sporadically until 1884, when operations were finally suspended. There was little further interest in the area until 1953, when Stratmat Ltd. initiated an ambitious exploration program. At the same time, the company carried out research on an electric-reduction process to produce metallic iron and ferromanganese. The technical feasibility of this process (Udy process) was confirmed, however the high energy costs were prohibitive and work ceased in 1957. Some metallurgical research was carried out by Mandate Refining Ltd. about 1970 and more recently by the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council.The Years Prior to 1848New Brunswick became a separate province in 1784, shortly after the influx of a large number of Loyalists from the United States. Man y of these people sett led along the Saint John River, including the area of excellent farmland near the present town of Woodstock.There were indication s that some of these earl y settlers recognized iron formations in the vicinity of Woodstock about 1820, however the nature of the deposits was not known until 836 when Dr. C.T. Jackson, a geologist commissioned by the Stat e of Maine, investigated the mineral potential of the area. Jackson (1836) described the ""ore"" as compact red hematite yielding 44 per cent pure metallic iron, and suggested that sizable tonnages may be present. It was about this time that an extensive limonite deposit was found in north-central Maine, near Mt. Katahdin. Other iron deposits were found in the Nictaux area of Nova Scotia, and a few years later at Londonderry."

The transformation of an open pit coal mine to a horizontal-punch underground mine is subject to a number of challenges. These include scheduling the operation of various sizes of trucks over a long period, as well as updating delivery routes and dump site locations as the mine transformation progresses. In this process, rock is excavated from a quarry through earthworks. The bulk earthwork and quarry material delivery were initially drawn from traditional planning and experienced issues in their early phases. As a result, a traffic simulator was developed in order to validate schedules and predict achievable throughput, likely delays or blockages in the long term. The dynamic traffic simulator was also used to provide traffic density and vehicle arrival data at selected intersections in order to identify possible safety and efficiency issues.

Approximation of Surface Area of Fines in Blast Induced Fragmentation The surface area of fragmentation, especially in the finer size fractions, is a useful property to characterise the mechanisms of rock breakage. In the past, researchers have made assumptions with regard to the shape of fragments in order to estimate surface area, such as that all fragments are the same shape or all fragments are spheres. Often these assumptions were developed with inappropriate measures and returned considerable variability and error for the calculation of surface area. This paper reports a model to estimate fragmentation surface area from sieve sized raw data and a density measurement, with experimental validation down to a size fraction of -45 + 38 ?m in a range of rock types. After characterisation of particle shape, a range of fragment shapes was found to be in each size fraction. Nevertheless, in the ?2 sieve series the average fragment mass, volume and the size fraction standard deviations could be predicted reasonably accurately. Ellipsoid geometry was used to describe particle shape. Using these parameters and the number of fragments (also predicted) in each sieve size the individual surface area of each fragment was simulated.

ABSTRACT: Determining tunnel stability is a key issue during preliminary site investigation. In contrast, problems of excavatability have been largely ignored. While the choice of an economic tunnelling method is admittedly a clear priority in the planning stage, special investigations focus-sing on rock fragmentation (e.g. drilling or cutting performance, rock mass blastability or tool wear) are rarely carried out. This paper explores possibilities to quantify key parameters for rock mass excavatability in drilling, blasting and cutting by TBMs and roadheaders. RÉSUMÉE: La détermination de la stabilité du tunnel est une question clé lors des études prélimi-naires. En revanche, les problèmes d'excavabilité sont souvent en grande partie ignorés. Tandis que le choix d'une méthode de percement économique est évidemment une priorité claire dans l'étape de planification, des investigations spéciales se concentrant sur la fragmentation de la roche (par exemple le comportement de la roche au forage, à l’excavation ou au dynamitage et l’usure des outil) sont rarement effectuées. Cet article explore les possibilités pour quantifier les paramè-tres clé de la roche lors d’excavation par forage, dynamitage, au tunnelier (TBMs) ou à l’excavatrice. Während der Wahl einer wirtschaftlichen Vortriebsmethode während der Planungsphase meist noch eine gewisse Priorität beigemessen wird, werden spezielle Untersuchungen zur Gebirgslösung (Bohr- oder Schneidbarkeit, Sprengbarkeit oder Werkzeugverbrauch) nur sehr selten durchgeführt. Diese Publikation zeigt Möglichkeiten der Quantifizierung von Schlüsselparametern für die Gebirgslösbarkeit auf, also der Bohr- und Sprengbarkeit, der Fräsbarkeit mit Teilschnittmaschinen und der Schneidbarkeit mit TBMs.

Wet beneficiation of iron ore fines less than 1 mm typically involves a desliming stage ahead of the fine gravity separation such as spirals. The desliming is achieved using a bank of cyclones. The reject ultra-fines emerge in the overflow stream at relatively low pulp density, contain high proportions of low-value slimes, but also well-liberated iron ore ultra-fines below 0.045 mm in size; however, recovering the valuable iron ore ultra-fines from this overflow stream presents a significant challenge due to the need to remove such a large amount of water and slimes.The REFLUX™ Graviton consists of distinct 3D-printed modular units, based on REFLUX™ Classifiers, which are rotated at high speed in a large centrifuge. This system has previously been investigated under semi-batch conditions, demonstrating the potential for precision separations with significant capacity. It has been shown that the throughput advantage of the inclined channels and G forces multiply. This is the first paper presented showing the performance of this system under continuous steady-state conditions. Ultra-fine silica in the size range of 0 to 0.045 mm was fed to the Graviton at different volumetric rates, fluidisation rates and pulp densities ranging from 2 wt per cent to 30 wt per cent, in order to develop a fundamental understanding of the system’s performance. "INTRODUCTION This paper will discuss the topics in the recently released Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association’s (CEMA) Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 7th edition, that deal with safety and maintenance. The most effective way to improve conveyor safety is through designing out hazards in the earliest stages of a project. When the safest way to perform maintenance is also the easiest, mechanics will naturally take the obvious and least hazardous approach. IMPORTANCE OF ACCESS Studies have shown that mechanics spend almost one-third of their time accessing the components to be serviced and approximately 25% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur during maintenance1. Chapter 2 of Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials deals with design considerations. In Chapter 2 there are recommendations for access at the various sections of a typical conveyor for cleaning, inspection and maintenance. While, in some cases, providing access will increase the cost of the conveyor system there can be significant paybacks in reduced injuries, faster maintenance and easier cleaning. Piping and Conduit One of the significant recommendations in Chapter 2 for access is to restrict the mounting of piping and conduit to the conveyor structure in the Loading and Discharge zones of a conveyor. Piping and conduit are more permanent fixtures than maintainable components and should be located out of the way of components needing frequent maintenance. If electricians and pipe fitters are given convenient locations to make their runs they will natural use them. Flexible conduit and hoses can be used to connect to components from pipe racks and cable trays which further enhances maintenance. Access for Cleaning Another critical aspect of access is for cleaning. Approximately 33% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur while cleaning spillage and carryback under and around conveyors2. In the loading zone having sufficient height under the conveyor for cleaning increases the cleaning interval and allows for safer cleaning. In the discharge zone having adequate access for belt cleaning installation has a direct effect on the ability to install a proper cleaning system and perform maintenance."

Constant-volume charges of precipitated PETN (pentaeythrite tetranitrate) at three specific gravities (0.50, 1.00, and 1.50) were used in laboratory tests to examine the effects of changes in explosive properties on free-surface displacement pulses and on crater dimensions. The tests were performed in large blocks of cement-mortar. The values for the detonation velocity, detonation pressure, specific energy, energy density, and energy release rate were calculated from the explosive loading density. Calculated explosive properties were correlated with free-surface displacement pulse measurements, strain energy, and measured crater dimensions. Increases in explosive properties resulted in increased free-surface displacement pulse parameters and crater dimensions. The loading density, detonation velocity, energy density, detonation pressure, and energy release rate were found to be best indicators of explosive performance. Simple acoustic relationships involving impedance ratios were examined and could not be used to predict peak displacement amplitude or strain energy. Data are presented in the customary English units as well as the International System of Units (SI).

"In order to study the influence of MgO-C refractory on steel cleanliness and inclusions during steelmaking process, and to understand the reaction mechanism deeply, laboratory deoxidation and equilibrium experiments were respectively performed in MgO crucibles at 1873K. In the former experiment, after Al addition, steel samples were taken at different holding time. In the latter experiment, different slag components and different contents of carbon and aluminum in steel were considered respectively. The inclusion characteristics of each experiment were analyzed. The results showed that with the increasing of holding time after deoxidation by Al, MgO existed in the small inclusions firstly, and then in the large ones such as the clusters. The MgO content in the inclusions increased with the increasing of holding time, indicating that the MgO in crucible could be individually reduced by the aluminum in the molten steel. The reaction could occur within nine minutes.IntroductionNon-metallic inclusions would have positive or negative effect on steel quality depend on the quantity, size and composition of inclusions. Large inclusions are always detrimental. From the point of view of inclusion property, plastic inclusions are required by steel cord, while hard inclusions are preferred by pipeline steel. One of the most important ways to increase the steel quality is reducing the inclusion size and controlling the inclusion composition in steel. Nowadays, MgO based refractory is used as ladle glaze material with more and more frequency, which results in different inclusion characteristics in molten steel, for example, the inevitable generation of MgO contained inclusions during ladle treatment of steel. In other words, the inclusions in this type ladle will influence on the steel cleanliness and the product property. Thus, keeping an eye on the inclusion formation behavior in the steel with MgO-C ladle glaze is important for the steel industry. There have been a few studies in this regard. Li et al[l] studied the reactions between MgO-C refractory, molten slag and metal using a high temperature X-ray radiographic apparatus. They found that the local corrosion was regarded as due to the cyclic dissolution of MgO and graphite in the refractory into slag and metal phase. The gas bubbles formed according to the reaction of (FeO)+C(s)=Fe(l)+CO(g) greatly influenced the corrosion. On an industrial scale, Du[2] found that ladle glaze is a major source of inclusions in the ladle. An experimental study has been performed by Lehmann in order to estimate the importance of the reaction between a MgO-based tundish refractory and an Al-killed steel[3]."

This report describes the development and application of a rail haulage simulator that is readily adaptable for the analysis of a wide variety of operating problems. Various gaming, options have been integrated into the model structure which permit trial and error solutions from a computer terminal prior to capital committment in the actual operation. The high level of information retrieval available allows engineers and managers to develop production data which fit individual needs. In this report, emphasis was placed on the problem of organizing and performing the sequence of operations that are necessary to accomplish a complete mine materials handling simulation. Here, the Rail Haulage Sub-assembly was linked to the Production Sub-system to mine and move coal from seven operating sections to the intermediate and main-line track. The analysis was devoted to the problems associated with how the operating system performs and what alternatives were available to minimize idle times and hence increase productivity. In order to have some objective means of evaluating which of the alter- native methods for production was most appropriate, the choice was to replace the intermediate track with belt conveyors. Since the attempt here was to demonstrate model flexibility and not to establish the goals or trade-offs between computing objectives with which systems judgement must contend, no further alternatives were tried. This is left to management with the data and a problem to solve. Rail haulage simulation is not new, and several, operationally tested models are being used in practice (Bucklen, et. al., 1968).

The Ravensthorpe Nickel Project (RNP) flow sheet provides for the upgrading of Ni & Co in a size based beneficiation process prior to leaching. The upgrading effect on Ni and Co makes the beneticiation process a powerful addition to the flow sheet. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis based on 351 individual batch tests, 52 large scale composites and 21 pilot plant tests has been used to successfully model beneticiation product grade, recovery, upgrade and mass recovery. Statistically, 83% and 96% of the variability in nickel recovery and nickel product grade respectively was accounted for. Algorithms have been developed for Ni, Co, Mg, Al and Fe, which represents the revenue and operating cost factors for the process. The algorithms have subsequently been applied to the resource model, allowing prediction of elemental grade and recovery for the development of the mine schedules based upon these parameters and not head grades alone. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models plays an important role in revamping planning, maintenance planning, and preparation for dismantling during the lifecycle of industrial plants. Recently, the 3D reconstruction of existing industrial plants was conducted using laserscan data to make surveying processes more efficient. However, the current 3D reconstruction process from laser-scan data is still limited due to the need for significant human assistance. Although a great deal of effort has been made to efficiently reconstruct 3D as-built industrial plant models, the presence of objects?such as equipment, pipelines, and valves of different sizes and shapes?in existing industrial plants significantly increases the complexity of laser-scan data and makes automating the reconstruction process more challenging in practice. The purpose of this study is to propose a knowledge-based approach for the 3D reconstruction of as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. First, pipelines were extracted from laser-scan data based on surface curvature information and knowledge about pipelines' sizes from existing piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). Once entire pipelines were extracted, they were modeled based on skeleton features. Then, the remaining objects were clustered and grouped separately via the region grouping process. Afterward, clustered objects were retrieved and modeled based on global feature-based matching from the 3D database. Finally, the resulting model was checked to ensure that it was well-reconstructed according to the information regarding the relationships among objects abstracted from the existing P&ID. The preliminary results on actual industrial plants show that integrating knowledge into the reconstruction steps played an important role in the proposed approach and that this approach obtained accurate as-built industrial plant models from unstructured laser-scan data. The proposed approach could be successfully utilized to assist in many applications during the lifecycle of industrial plants.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

"ForewordTHE Arctic Archipelago and northern Greenland contain an orogenic region that is as much as 300 miles wide and over 1,400 miles long. It occupies much of what was formerly classified with the Arctic Plains and grouped with other plains and lowlands of Canada as one main geological division. It is proposed that this folded region be designated the Innuitian Region and be recognized as one of the main geological divisions of Canada.Canada's main geological divisions (see Geological Survey of Canada, 1947) have been considered as consisting of a central shield, largely surrounded by plains that separate it from eastern and western mountains. The plains include the Interior Plains, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Arctic Plains or Low-lands, and the Hudson Bay Lowland, which is in the central part of the Shield. Plains and mountains are, strictly speaking, physiographic terms, but because mountains are generally folded regions and plains are generally made of undisturbed strata, such terms are useful vehicles to express the fundamental make-up of the land. Nevertheless, it is preferable to use the terms Appalachian and Cordilleran 'Regions' rather than 'Mountains', as those geological divisions are not exclusively made of mountains.Because of the lack of more definite information, the 'Arctic Plains' have included, in the past, regions with plateaux two to four thousand feet above the nearby sea, mountain ranges reaching approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, and regions of folded strata."

Objective of the ittvestigation was to determine the electrokinetic differences, if ally, of anthracite lithotypes and thus establish the feasibility of making a coqlstituent separation by froth flotation or other surface-dependent processes. The elec-trokinetic properties were determined by streaming potential methods. In addition, chemical and physical analyses of the lithotypes were made to establish nonsubjec-tive parameters for their diflerentiation. Electrokinetic results indicate a difference in the characteristics of the lithotypes. The isoelectric points of 4 anthracites and 12 lithotypes were obtained. It was suggested that the relative flotation rates of the lithotypes were pH dependent and that the maximum flotation rate of anthracite occurs in an acidic circuit. Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal,' research on the subject is still in an early stage of development."' To the authors' knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes, particularly anthracite litho-types. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods. It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface-dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published.? The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results; however, the result? are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation. Experimental Procedure Prior to discussing the experimental work per se, it would be of value to establish an understanding of anthracite lithology. Anthracite Lithology: Coal seams display two different modes of variation, rank and type. A coal's position in the continuous series ranging from peats through anthracites determines its rank. The rank of the material under consideration is anthracite. The different bands of coal which constitute a coal seam are distinctly contrasted in regard to physical properties and chemical composition. These megascopic bands are the coal types and are termed lithotypes., A megascopic examination of 11 anthracites revealed three distinct, homogeneous, lithotypes. The classic description of bituminous coal lithotypes as proposed by Stope" was found to be quite adequate for recognizing the three lithotypes in anthracite, namely vitrain, durain, and fusain. The term vitrain describes the brilliant constituent of coal; durain describes dull coal; and fusain is the term applied to fossil charcoal. The anthracites studied were generally found to contain 60-80% vitrain, 10-30% durain, and 1-10% fusain. A complete description of the physical characteristics and chemical composition of the studied lithotypes can be found in a previous publication.' Sample Preparation: Nine of the anthracites used in the investigation were from Pennsylvania, one was from Russia, and one from Wales. Table 1 shows the various designations and sources of the employed anthracites. The letter V, D, or F added to the whole coal designation indicates respectively the vitrain, durain or fusain lithotype of that coal. The samples were carefully collected to avoid contamination. To insure against oxidation, the samples were obtained as fresh as possible and stored under nitrogen or water. Generally a representative sample of the seam and samples containing high concentrations of one or another of the petrographic constituents were secured for each coal. Pure lithotypes were prepared by manual separation and selection. The pure lithotypes and representative samples were ground to —35 mesh and screened to 35 x 48 mesh. The problem of good engineering practice and. of good conservation practice in oil production is that of keeping gas in solution. This can best be done by producing a field as a water-drive field. Some degree of water drive is believed to be present in most fields but in the past most fields have been produced too rapidly to allow water drive to be effective. Ultimate recovery should be So per cent greater for fields produced by water drive over that from gas-expansion fields. Wide spacing will permit fields of low-degree water drive to be produced effectively as water-drive fields. INTRODUCTION NEGLECTING all the complicated scientific and technical argument that leads to the conclusion, the solution of the problem of good production practice, of good engineering practice, and of good conservation practice in oil production is to keep gas in solution. This can best be done by producing fields at a rate low enough to make effective the water drive, which exists, it is generally believed, to a degree great enough to be made effective in more than 80 per cent of the fields of the United States. Oil is being so produced in the Ten Section field of California; the Hobbs field of New Mexico; the Yates, Hastings, Friendswood, Anahuac fields and the main sand of the Conroe pool, in Texas; the Magnolia pool in Arkansas, and doubtless in many other pools. The measures of success in the efforts to achieve the solution of the problem are the maintenance of bottom-hole pressure and the prevention of an increase in gas-oil ratio. Some decline from the original bottom-hole pressure and the production of some gas are essential. A pressure gradient from the reservoir to the well is necessary and at least as much gas must be produced as that in solution in a barrel of oil. Once the optimum pressure and the gas-oil ratio have been established, they should be maintained. How common is water drive in oil and gas pools? General opinion is that some degree of water drive is almost universal. Theoretically, this conclusion appears to be a sound one. According to our present understanding of the processes of sedimentation, we would expect to find all sands or sandstone charged with connate water unless it had been displaced by some other fluid, such as fresh water percolating into the beds at the outcrop, or oil and gas, or gas only, in reservoirs. The fact that the original pressure of the fluid system in most reservoirs is approximately that of the hydrostatic head of water for the corresponding depth indicates that the sands are charged with water, and common experience in drilling into the extensions of the porous zones beyond the reservoir is to find them watercharged. Doctor Manning has been connected with the Department of the Interior for 34 years, having been civil engineer with the Geological Survey, from 1885 to 1910, previous to his connection with the Bureau of Mines which was organized in the latter year. Iron is a key detrimental impurity in silica sands that determines their contribution to high-technology industries. Herein, a simple ecologically sound approach is investigated for iron removal from a silica sand sample obtained from the El-Zaafarana area-Egypt. The sample was subjected to a detailed microscopic mineralogical study supported by XRD and XRF characterization. The sample was beneficiated using distilled water attrition scrubbing and screening over a 25 μm sieve followed by leaching using a mixture of equal amounts of phosphoric and oxalic acids. Leaching experiments were designed and analyzed using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) methodology. A model was developed and evaluated using the analysis of variance technique to map the relationship between the residual iron oxide in the produced concentrate and selected variables such as leaching temperature, oxalic acid, and phosphoric acid concentrations. XRD and mineralogical analysis reveal that quartz is the most dominant constituent of the studied sand and other minerals such as kaolinite, iron oxide, rutile, and zircon exist in trace amounts. The head sample shows a silica and iron oxide content of 95.69% and 2379 ppm, respectively. Attrition and separation over a 25 μm sieve increase the silica content to 97.05% and decreases the residual iron oxide to 455 ppm. The final product after leaching under optimized conditions shows 99.82% silica and 55 ppm iron oxide.

Frontier/Traylor Joint Venture is presently constructing a section of the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon's (TRI-MET) Westside Light Rail system. This new section will extend Portland's existing transit system to the western suburbs of Beaverton and Hillsboro. The drill-blast excavations at this project include 10,000 feet of 20 foot tunnel, 18 cross passages, three shafts, an underground railway station, and a U-wall open cut. From a blast designer's perspective, this job has been extremely challenging. Blast vibration is limited to 0.5 ips at 200 feet or at the nearest structure, and airblast is limited to 129 dB -- linear peak and 96 dB -- C scale. The tunnels pass under heavily built up areas and have top of tunnel to surface cover distances as low as 70 feet. Surface blasting in the 26,000 cubic yard U-wall excavation was limited to five short nighttime periods due to its proximity to the very busy highway 26.
