In this paper, the effects of matte grade, flux grain size, blast flowrate and blast O2 content on the process of silica flux melting in a copper converter were investigated. The results showed that the blast flowrate and the blast 02 content were not significant factors in the melting process. However, with an increase in grain size of flux and grade of matte, the amount of the flux molten decreased. The data on the melt rate of process correspond well with the mathematical model which simulates the chemical reactions occurring at the interface. The kinetic equations of melting are as follow:

THE metal iron has physical arid chemical properties which are some- what different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 769 C (1416 F), the metal becomes nonmagnetic, and at the "A3 point," 911 C (1672 F), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. 111 the range 769 to 911 C, it is sometimes called beta (ß) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 1392 C (2538 F), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or nonmagnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in an inert atmosphere) at 1536 C (2797 F); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PHYSICAL AND THERMAL PROPERTIES OF IRON Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures.1 For example, in heating through the A3 point, a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 16-1 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly with the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always true. For ex- ample, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point al- though no transformation occurs. (See Fig. 14-1.) Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. Liquid iron is capable of dissolving most of the other metals and many nonmetallic elements as well. Of the metals that are liquid at the melting point of iron, only lead, silver, and bismuth refuse to dissolve to an appreciable extent. Table 16-2 contains a list of the common elements classified with respect to their solubility in liquid iron. Those which are very soluble or practically insoluble require no further discussion, but several of the nonmetals that are gases and exhibit limited solubility are of considerable importance to us and merit more detailed consideration.

Australian wheat belt agriculture is causing a decline of its natural resource base. The major problem, salinity, arises from a small reduction in water consumption by agricultural crops compared to what prevailed under the prior native vegetation. This causes groundwater accumulation which, in the low relief landscapes of the wheat belt, is leading to extensive surface saturation in low landscape positions and dramatic, destructive change in the hydrological behaviour and habitat of streams and rivers. The ability of agriculture to invest in salinity control is severely limited by its long-term decline in its terms of trade. Extensive planting of perennial vegetation has the potential to increase water use and arrest the salinisation process. If these perennials were also commercially attractive, the cost of salinity treatment could be minimised. Given the difficult commercial position of food commodities, it is logical to develop ænon-foodÆ perennial crops, in particular woody crops suitable for industrial products. This paper looks at the example of Sweden, where there has been a generation of investment in developing forest harvest residue recovery, and short cycle woody crops for bioenergy, but with only limited success. In contrast, secondary residues (processing wastes) from forestry industry are readily saleable for low value uses like bioenergy. This suggests that the model woody crop must have a higher value fraction to facilitate delivery and commercial use of its lower value fractions. This model is being emulated in the development of native mallee eucalypts as short cycle woody crops in Western Australia. Some $50 million has been expended on mallee development in the past decade and this has culminated in an engineering demonstration of integrated processing. The putative high value products are activated carbon and eucalyptus oil and the residue (plus waste heat) will be converted to electricity. The potential scale on which crops of this type would be required to achieve salinity control means that many more high value and residue products will have to be developed. Metallurgical charcoal appears to be a promising product option.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Reno Research Center investigated, developed, and patented a high-temperature cyanide leaching process for recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from automobile catalysts. A batch pilot plant was constructed at the center and operated to demonstrate this technology to industry. Approximately 1,600 kg of used pellet, monolith, and metal support catalysts containing 1,700 g (54 tr oz) of PGM was processed. Forty-five-kilogram batches of used catalysts were leached with sodium cyanide solution at 160°C for 1 h in a countercurrent processing sequence. This selectively dissolved the PGM. Average extractions from the used pellet catalyst were 96 pet Pt, 95 pct Pd, and 73 pct Rh. Average extractions from the used monolith catalyst were 84 pct Pt, 81 pct Pd, and 66 pet Rh. Heating the pregnant leach solutions to 275°C for 4 h destroyed the PGM-cyanide complexes, causing over 99.7 pct of the PGM to precipitate from solution. The PGM precipitate was predominantly a metallic powder concentrate, typically analyzing greater than 50 pct PGM. Heating destroyed the cyanide to less than 0.2 mg/L free and total cyanide. Both the pellet and monolith residues were evaluated for disposal using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Major-element data for unaltered, unmineralized felsic host rocks from a number of stratigraphically simple, massive volcanogenic Zn-Cu(-Pb) sulphide deposits of low metamorphic grade have been compiled. The petrochemical affinities of these host rocks have been determined (by standard means and by discriminant analysis) and compared. This comparison indicates that volcanogenic deposits in felsic terrains are not restricted to the classical calc-alkaline rock association as previously thought, but can actually be hosted by rocks showing a range of iron content. There is a positive correlation between differentiation trend and are tenor. Zn-Cu ores usually have iron-rich felsic hosts (most Canadian Shield deposits); Pb-Zn -Cu ores have iron-poor felsic hosts (Japanese, Iberian and Tasmanian deposits). This parallels the antipathetic relationship between iron content and background lead levels evident in young, unmineralized, island arcs as well as in many older belts. Correlations between differentiation trend on one hand and massive ore mineralogy and the relative proportions of various rock type (including rhyolite, quartz-porphyry and coarse pyroclastic rocks) on the other are also evident. It is concluded that the recognition of a calc-alkaline differentiation trend cannot be used as a prospecting guide, as has previously been proposed. However, in view of the above correlations, the recognition of a given trend may aid in the formulation of an effective exploration philosophy.

In the near future, Bong Mining Company (BMC) will start mining a new deposit known as Zaweah II which is a narrow iron orebody requiring multiple row blasts with the bench floor as a free face. This called for the development of a new blasting technique. The article delineates the problem and its restrictions related to blasting. It also describes the approach which was taken for developing this new blasting technique which is essentially an application of the cratering theory with near spherical charges. Basic crater tests were conducted using various combinations of hole sizes, explosive strengths and delay patterns. From the results obtained, several alternatives were considered for production blasts and the most promising ones were evaluated.

Various rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two three2 five, an indefinite number, and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: 1. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only—not translation, inversion, nor others—is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal close-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. The fine coal fraction of a coal stream is that fraction which contains particles essentially in the -28 mesh size range. This fraction will normally first appear, in a coal preparation process, as a result of classification to segregate raw coal into various size components for beneficiation. More specifically, it could appear in desliming screen underfiow, classifying cyclone overflow, and in other process circuit components. It&apos;s recognized that the top size of this fraction has been determined more by secondary reasons, such as desliming screen area for the heavy medium cyclone circuit, the dewatering equipment for the fine clean coal, or even the stability of the refuse thickener circuit. Benefits, both economic and environmental, gained by beneficiating the fine coal fraction of a raw coal stream are increasing in number, until today, fine coal beneficiation is a necessity in most coal operations requiring any degree of preparation. This is due to some of the following reasons: • In the past it was frequently more economical to discard -28 mesh raw coal sizes than to recover the coal values from them. Today, mining costs have escalated to the point where all coal values leaving the mine should report to the finished product if possible. • Today&apos;s mining methods are producing run-of-mine coals containing higher percentages of -28 mesh sizes. This heavily weighs the economic balance in favor of beneficiating this fraction. As much as 25% of the run-of-mine coal from some mines is in the fine coal fraction. Beneficiation is recommended so that clean coal contained in the fraction can be recovered to reduce the loss of coal values. • Existing and pending environmental regulations mandate that solid fuels now consumed in power station boilers contain almost no pyritic sulfur. This form of sulfur appears in raw coal in the fine coal fraction, but can be removed by coal beneficiation. Environmental considerations dictate that every year, more of the fine coal produced for steam generating purposes in the US be beneficiated. To deliberately discard any portion of the fine coal can only add to this cost, not only in the sense that fewer tons will be recovered but, more importantly, additional tonnage will be diverted to the most capital- and labor-intensive section of the entire preparation plant-the fine refuse dewatering section. It is apparent to preparation engineers that dewatering and ultimate disposal of the fine refuse derived from this beneficiation step is certainly the most difficult technical problem presented in the entire plant design. Therefore, any beneficiation procedure which increases the fine coal recovery, or in any manner decreases the tonnage of fine refuse to be dewatered, is going to be cost effective. Since the -28 mesh fraction contains both coal and refuse particles in their finest particle sizes and thus presents the greatest degree of liberation, one would immediately infer that the highest degree of beneficiation would be achieved. The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents. HISTORY OF BLASTING WITH EXPLOSIVES At one time workmen obtained stone blocks for building by grooving the rock with crude picks, driving wooden wedges into niches in the rock, and pouring water on the wedges; the swelling of the wood forced out the blocks. As late as the 17th century, fires were placed against the face of rock to crack it, and water was sometimes dashed on the heated rock to shatter it by sudden cooling. The Chino mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant County in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership two-thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one-third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The Chino Ore Body The Chino ore body is a widely varied deposit of rock types and contains intrusive stocks and sediments. The stocks contain chalcocite in a matrix of quartz, mica, and feldspar. Much of the feldspar is altered to clay. Some of these stocks are enriched with native copper. The sediments contain chalcopyrite associated with gangue minerals including magnetite, pyrite, garnet chlorite, and epidote. The contact of the stock and sediment is heavily altered to chlorite and clay. The stock ores contain economic quantities of molybdenite. The operating work index of Chino ore varies from 5 to 20 kwh/ton and averages 8.5 kwh/ton. The ore head to the concentrator averaged 0.81% copper and 0.010% molybdenum. Fifteen percent of the total copper head exists as nonsulfide mineralization.

Carbon anode cells were studied by two-dimensional computer simulation to evaluate their suitability for alumina electrolysis at high superficial current densities. The most efficient anode arrangement was needed to overcome the electrochemical disadvantages of alumina's low solubility in chlorides. Cells with packed-bed anodes might provide practical superficial current densities greater than 0.67 A/cm2 when the granule size was less than 1 cm, but in the process of electrolysis the granules within the active zone would be consumed and become smaller, affecting alumina concentration transport. For zones of very small granules a concentration-dependent model should be considered; for more complete consideration a time-dependent model can be introduced to describe the variation of granule size and its influence on mass transfer and polarisation

"Hydrometallurgical recovery of metals from printed circuit board waste typically involves multiple leaching stages; conventionally, base metals dissolution by mineral acids is followed by leaching of gold using cyanide or halide based lixiviants. Alternative lixiviants for gold leaching can reduce the potential hazardous nature of operation. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using thiosulfate as lixiviant for gold leaching from waste printed circuit boards. Batch leaching tests were performed to investigate the effects of thiosulfate concentration (0.1 – 0.2 M), ammonium concentration (0.2 – 0.4 M), pH (9 – 10.5), solids content (25 – 50 g/L), and copper content of the feed material on the gold leaching behavior. The concentrations of metals in liquid samples were determined by means of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and high pressure liquid chromatography was used to evaluate thiosulfate degradation/consumption. The ratio of thiosulfate to ammonia was found to have the most significant effect on the extent of gold leaching, with the best gold extraction observed at a ratio of 0.5 mole thiosulfate per mole ammonia. The lower pH range of 9 – 9.5 generally produced better Au leaching, while low copper extraction during the first stage base metal leaching stages has proven to be detrimental to gold leaching from the residue. Thiosulfate degradation/consumption increased and gold extraction decreased with higher residual copper in the feed. An optimum gold extraction of 78.5 % from base metal leach residue was achieved with 0.2 M thiosulfate, 0.4 M ammonia, and 0.02 M cupric ions at 25°C in the pH range 9 – 9.5.INTRODUCTION Background and Aim The recycling of e-waste is becoming increasingly important as it provides certain economic benefits apart from the obvious environmental benefits. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are found in most forms of e-waste and contain especially high concentrations of base and precious metals. Hydrometallurgical processes are often considered for the recovery of valuable metals from PCBs; these processes normally implement several leaching stages to selectively recover certain metals."

The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

The layout and efficiency of the degasification system is heavily dependent on the distribution of and the methane migrating mechanism in the mining induced fractures in the overburden strata In this paper, physical modeling and numerical simulation are employed to study the mining-induced fracture zones and the stress distribution in these zones. The physical models show that both the fracture and compaction zones form a parabolic shape in the over- burden strata along the panel transverse direction. When this is generalized to the panel longitudinal direction, the shape of the mining induced fracture zone over the longwall gob can be represented by a 3-D elliptic paraboloid function. Through the observation of bed separation, fracture density and distribution pattern in the physical models, it is believed that the development of the parabolic fracture zone can be divided into three distinguishable phases. The expansion characteristics and sizes of the fracture zones can be estimated. The numerical stimulation studies can be used to estimate the extent of the stress release zones. The stress release zones can be also divided into a high compressive stress - fracture closure zone, stress relieved - fracture expansion zone, and intact zone. The methane desorption model is then used to analyze the methane migrating pattern in the fracture zone. The developed model has been verified by the results of a longwall gob degasification tests at a coal mine in Yangquan, China with a fair agreement. Such studies show that the model can provide a reasonable accurate tool for designing the gob-well degasification system for longwall mining operations.

INTRODUCTION The selection of trackless equipment for underground mining can be a complex engineering problem due to the wide range of equipment sizes and operating modes. Computer simulation is particularly useful in estimating the performance of different systems for specific rock- handling problems. A hybrid simulator, incorporating some of the features of deterministic and stochastic simulation, was developed in order to handle not only queuing delays at loading and dumping points, but a1 so traffic interferences. Any number of vehicles can operate in any one of four basic modes (LHD, LAF, FEL, HFC) in parallel or in series. If the units use common roadways, loading and dumping points, certain operating delays will occur and be registered by the simulator and thus give a better evaluation of the marginal productivity of each additional unit. Based on a typical layout of drawpoints and ore passes for the sub-level stoping method, productivity and operating costs of different rock-handling systems will be examined. 1 . COMPUTER SIMULATION Numerous applications of computer simulations are reported in the 1iterature for various mining problems. Depending on the complexity of the system to be studied, simulation models were conceived with different degrees of sophistication. Three different types of simulators are generally recognized: stochastic, deterministic, and hybrid. Stochastic or Monte Carl o simulation randomly generates items, transactions, or events from some population defined by a frequency distribution and produces some expected future situations. Because this type of simulation is governed by the input of probability distributions, it requires a detailed knowledge of the system to be simulated; it implies expensive and time-consuming studies and reports to gene- rate this input information. A major short- coming of stochastic techniques is in new equipment evaluation, where the lack of data is unavoidable, and in new system design where the conditions are outside the range of the known historical behavior of the equipment. However, probabilistic simulation is almost essential for the study of cyclic queues and traffic problems. Deterministic simulation studies a system by generating performances on the basis of the mechanical capabilities of the vehicles and the physical limitations of the mining scheme. It is based on the engineering principle that the engine converts its energy into a rimpull at the wheels, which is in turn opposed by the rolling resistance and the grade of the ground; the machine is accelerated or decelerated until the tractive and resistive forces are in equilibrium, at which point it moves at constant speed. The information required by this technique, such as rimpull charts and equipment weight, is readily available from equipment suppliers. However, equipment performance at the mining site is also dictated by human and environmental conditions and changes with time and usage. For this reason, deterministic simulation generally overestimates the system capabilities; these must then be adjusted by efficiency factors based on observation and experience. Recently, hybrid simulation models, using both stochastic and deterministic techniques, have been built with some of the events generated stochasticly and others being deterministic. This compromising approach originated at the Pennsylvania State University. O&apos;Nei1 (1966) designed a simulator for truck-and- shovel operations that allows for transportation from multiple faces to mu1tiple destinations. Each truck performs according to its mechanical capabilities while its loading and dumping time and its load fluctuate according to specific probability distributions. A major advance in the simulation of mining systems is due to Sanford&apos;s model (1969) of underground coal mining operations. The originality of the model is in the use of an Executive System Control which sets up the initial system, de- fines the operation conditions , and instructs continuously four sub-assemblies representing shuttle cars, trains, continuous miners , and conveyors, which in turn generate a feed-back of their movement to the Executive Control System for further instructions. The model has enough flexibility to simulate simultaneous and sequential jobs that characterize any dynamic system. Sanford&apos;s early work evolved slowly to what is known today as the Under- ground Materials Handling Simulator for coal mining (Manula, 1974).

"INTRODUCTION The property of the Silver Spot Mines Co. is in the Boston Hill area within and adjacent to the southwest corner of Silver City, N. Mex. The area was visited by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ in 1941 and 1942 during the investigation of possible sources of manganese. The area was visited again in November 1944 4/ to study the possibilities of geophysical exploration of the manganiferous-iron deposits. This geophysical work was performed in 1945 5/, confirmed the existence of known deposits of manganiferous-iron ores, and indicated the probable extent and situation of others.The Silver Spot property was churn-drilled from 1926 to 1929 during exploration for manganiferous-iron ores. The sludges from a number of the holes indicated low-grade lead-zinc mineralization. Lead and zinc minerals also were found on the dumps of some of the old shafts when the property was visited by D. H. Mullen, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines late in 1946. A diamond-drilling project was proposed. It was started in April 1947 with the intention of investigating the best of the known ore indications as shown by the old churn-drill holes and thus gathering new data upon which to base future work. Only one hole was drilled before the project was terminated because of lack of funds and time."
