In this study a generalized specification and costing model for high tonnage coal carrying conveyor belts of 3.5 to 100 miles is presented. These belt systems, in modular units or flights, of up to 9 miles in length can be considered in terms of gathering systems. The study format is sufficiently open to allow users to insert their own requirements and parameters. A specific case study is provided. Because conveyor belts are feasible almost anywhere, this study has not investigated any specific route or geographic location. Rather, it has concentrated on setting up an heuristic programming model for conveyor belt facility optimization and cost minimization. The analysis starts with the principle factors involved in the design of the system and their optimization for various cases. This is followed, in Section 5.4, with a factor by factor cost analysis based on industry data and the preceding optimization. The next step is the development of both facility and costing models suitable for computer analysis. Logic flow diagrams are presented at each major analytic step.

MORE than thirty members of the Coal Division attended the Coal Land Valuations Round Table on Monday morning. Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. After a lively discussion on the desirability of inclusion of some questions in the agenda of the Committee, the following outline was adopted :

This work reports on applying iron oxide coated sands media in an experimental permeable reactive barrier to remove uranium species from uranium containing water. A field experiment was conducted at the legacy Gunnar uranium mine & mill site that was abandoned in the 1960s with limited to no decommissioning. The flooded Gunnar mine pit presently contains about 3.2 million m3 of water contaminated by dissolved U (1.2 mg/l), Ra-226 (0.4 Bq/l), and minor concentrations of other contaminants (As, Se, etc.). The water is seeping over the pit rim into Lake Athabasca posing environmental and health concerns. Iron oxide coated sands can be used to immobilize uranium species through an adsorption process. Methods for preparation of hydrous ferric oxide sorbents and their supported forms onto silica sands are described. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD) were used to characterize the physical-chemical properties of the sorbent. The monolayer uranium uptake capacity (Qm) was estimated through the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Adsorption kinetic experiments were performed in a lab environment before moving to a field trial. Based on these lab results and the input on field-scale appropriate geometries, a pilot permeable reactive barrier was fabricated and a field test conducted near the Gunnar pit in June 2019. This pilot test provided technical data and information needed for designing a full-scale permeable barrier based on the iron oxide coated sands, which may be applied for in-situ water treatment at Gunnar and other legacy uranium sites.

The potential of rockfall at open-pit mines presents a continuous hazard to mine workers and is typically mitigated by designing catch benches at empirically determined widths. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is working in conjunction with industry and academia to revisit and update current catch bench guidelines to better match acceptable risk tolerances for modern mining practices. To begin this process, a rockfall testing program was designed to gather empirical runout and bench catchment data at partnering mine sites in the Western United States. This paper presents a detailed description of each component of the rockfall testing program, including scouting and safety plan development, equipment requirements, synthetic rock development for uniform testing across varying bench configurations, local rock collection for testing of mine-specific geology, data acquisition during testing, and data processing. Additionally, this paper describes how the program has been updated over time according to lessons learned during initial rockfall testing.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

Fatigue failure and accompanying brittle failure occurs frequently in heavy mining equipment. This paper discusses how fracture mechanics can be applied as a tool for crack control and crack management. Information is provided to determine if particular components are prone to brittle failure. By using existing fracture mechanics formulae, an estimation of the critical crack size can then be made. It is explained that for a successful application of fracture mechanics, both the actual engineering stress in the component and the mechanical properties of the applied material must be known. The importance of toughness at low temperatures is quantitatively illustrated by calculating critical crack sizes at room temperature and at below-zero temperatures. Understanding the possibilities of fracture mechanics will also produce a climate in which the purchaser of equipment can more precisely analyze the relative quality of components with respect to crack tolerance and failure prevention. In this manner, communication between the user and manufacturer of equipment may also become more precise and effective, leading to improved design.

The recent discovery of large amounts of helium-3, a valuable thermonuclear fuel, on the surface of the Moon has prompted engineers and scientists to examine the commercial attractiveness, thetechnological feasibility, and the environmental features of this important resource. The main feature of this fuel cycle is the low (˜ 1%) fraction of energy released in neutrons. Such low neutron fluxes result in important reductions in the amount of radioactivity, afterheat, and radiation damage in a fusion power plant. On the other hand, the high fraction of energy in charged particles and synchrotron radiation can be directly converted to electricity, resulting in very high efficiencies of electricity production (˜60.70%). It has been shown that there is 10 times more energy in He3 on the Moon than there ever was in fossil fuels (i.e., coal, oil, and gas) on the Earth. The techniques and equipment needed to extract the helium-3 have been examined and internationally acceptable mechanisms for the industrial development of this resource have been outlined. This paper expands on the financial, environmental, and technical aspects of the recovery of helium-3 for use in the 21st century.

The choice of which mining method to use at many large surface coal mines is often dicated by what machinery is available or what experience the mine management can offer. One of the most significant surface coal mines in Turkey is owned and operated by the Turkish National Coal Board, located to the west of the city of Kütahya. The Seyitömer Lignite Enterprise (SLE) extracts low quality coal, the majority of which is supplied to an adjacent power station. The coal seems at SLE contain bands of ash which under normal mining conditions are extracted with the coal. This increases the ash content of the run of mine coal and results in lower efficiency at the power station and financial penalties for SLE. In this paper, therefore, selection of the best possible equipment and production method was identified to achieve high selective mining at SLE. The research found that two different high selective mining methods were suitable for selective excavation of the B3 seam, which were hydraulic excavator and truck and surface miner and truck combinations. It was also found that high selective excavation could provide the desired coal quality at 52% lower costs when the whole process (excavation, transportation, processing, etc.) was considered. "Valuation methods are well established for mineral properties with production or imminent production, and include discounted cash flow and comparable transactions. Valuation methods for non-producing mineral properties, however, are more subjective. Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the prefeasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. Different valuation methods may be appropriate for different types of mineral properties.Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage. The market approach is generally appropriate to all types of mineral properties, although it is difficult to find good comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions. Cost approach methods, such as appraised value and geoscience factor, are commonly used for exploration stage properties.Canadian standards and guidelines for valuation of mineral properties are in the process of being finalized by a Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIMVal Committee). The CIMVal Standards are intended to be consistent with National Instrument 43-101, which sets regulatory standards of disclosure for mineral projects, and with International Valuation Standards. The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuation be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be disclosed."

The Powderhorn complex as a source of perovskite (calcium titanate) containing about 1.5% rare earths has been examined in several recent feasibility studies. Much promising exploration and process research has been done in recent years. This paper is presented with cautious optimism and with the acknowledgment that there may be some technical and economic areas yet to be explored. The Powderhorn carbonatite and alkalic stock in Gunnison County, Colorado, lies about 203 airlines km southwest of Denver at an elevation of 2450 to 2750 m (see Figures land 2). All of the mineable ore bodies are owned by Buttes Resources Company of Houston, Texas.

Industry views will be crucial in the preparation of the Guide that will assist proactive & predictive planning and maintenance regimes and the availability of the asset. The Guide will enable changes in current working practices, share updated recommendations and provide a route map to implement future requirements for tunnel asset management. The generic content of the Guide would be applicable to North American practice.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

Pre-cambrian scheelite deposits in Northeastern Brazil are widespread in a high grade metamorphic terrain. Previously these deposits had been interpreted as contact-metasomatic. In this paper, a volcanigenic model is invoked based on the volcanic setting (proximal to distal) and the absence of associated felsic intrusives and spatially associated metasomatic skarns. The tungsten was introduced into sediments by volcanic- exhalative processes and subsequently remobilized and further concentrated by heat and metamorphis fluids associated with high-grade metamorphism and migmitization. An alternative syngenetic - diagenetic model is discussed which requires the transport of tungsten by heteropoly acids and deposition of the tungsten as a function of Eh and Ph conditions and different clastic depositional environments. While such stratabound tungsten deposits are considered rare in North America, the hypotheses developed in this paper may open new areas for exploration.

"With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

"The meaning of the term ""process control"" has evolved significantly since its widespread use began in the manufacturing industries in the 1940s. Further, the scope of process control applications has drastically increased both in terms of the breadth of industries using process automation technologies and the vertical integration of these technologies within a single industry. This evolution and integration of process control technologies within the manufacturing industries has proceeded to such an extent that process automation is an integral part of modern business practices.This paper will examine the current status of process control technology from simple process regulation through process performance optimization to business planning. Each layer of the operations automation hierarchy will be discussed both in. terms of the current state-of-the-art and the directions in which these technologies are evolving. The key tools and tasks necessary for success at every level of the automation hierarchy will be introduced.
