In the early nineties it was observed by several European investigators and by C. S. Rice4 that an explosion could be checked and would not propagate in the parts of a mine where shale or other inert dust was present in large amounts.5 After the disastrous Courrieres explosion in France that killed 1,100 men, coal-dust explosion tests were made in France in 1907 and in Great Britain in 1908 which resulted in the conclusion that if enough incombustible dust were properly spread throughout passageways charged with coal-dust, the propagation of an explosion by the coal-dust could be prevented. In 1908 the Federal government authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and of possible methods of preventing them, with the result that during 1911 the United States Bureau of Mines, after making several tests, suggested that rock-dust be used in gassy or dusty bituminous coal mines. Since that time, experiments and investigations6 have proved conclusively that widespread explosions can be prevented in coal mines by efficient rook-dusting.

SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

THE Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company's underground mine at Flin Flon, Manitoba, has in the past been serviced by two working shafts-the North Main shaft, and the No. 3 shaft. The North Main shaft is used to hoist the total production from under-ground, and handles the greater part of the mine supplies and crews. The shaft is five-compartment design, rectangular in cross-section, and is equipped entirely with steel shaft sets from the surface to the finished depth of 2,210 feet. Hoisting equipment in the surface plant will not permit the North Main shaft to be extended below its present finished depth. The No. 3 shaft, located approximately 2,300 feet from the North Main shaft, is used primarily as a ventilation shaft, and for hoisting lower-level development waste to the 390 level, where this material is used as mine fill. The No. 3 shaft is of standard rectangular design, timbered with 8-in. by 8-in. creosoted fir sets, hung on 6-foot centres. From the surface to the 1,430 level, the No. 3 shaft consists of three 5 ft. by 5 ft. compartments, and below this level to the completed depth of 2,300 feet, the shaft is increased to four compartments. To service the mine and to expedite development below the 2,210 level, a one and one-half compartment winze was sunk from the 2,210 level to a depth of 766 feet, or approxima tel y the 3,000 level.

The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. "INTRODUCTION Mining at its best is not a clean occupation for either surface or underground employees; and this applies alike to coal, metal, and non-metallic mines. The employees are handling minerals that have been blasted, or broken by some means and are subjected to mineral dust, whether it is coal, quartz, or talc. The employees usually wear clothes specifically adapted to the work in which they are engaged, and frequently these clothes are not suitable for use away from the mine. Many mines are wet, and employees must wear rubber boots to remain at least partly dry, and even on relatively dry mines, some parts of the mines usually have water falling from overhead, there are accumulations of water, or the floor or other surfaces are wet or muddy, Some mines are dusty, and the air-borne dust quickly settles on the clothes and body of the miner, especially, when he is working in confined areas, or in places that are hot, humid, or poorly ventilated. Most occupations around a coal tipple, anthracite breaker, or a mill at a metal or nonmetallic mine have their own problems of cleanliness as to skin or clothes or both. Mining in any of its phases is inherently dirty work, and the employees dress accordingly while at work.In the early stages of mining it was the custom or workers to wear their dirty clothes home and change there. This necessitated their going home after work in dirty clothes which were usually damp from perspiration or from contact with wet or muddy matelials or surfaces, and, in addition to being inconvenient this was a frequent cause of colds, pneumonia, other pulmonary diseases or, possible skin ailments. Men working in very wet mines found that it was more satisfactory to change into dry clothes in the boiler room at the mine after work and allow their wet clothes to dry overnight. The mining companies later provided the first of the so-called ""dry-houses"" which were heated but had, few, if any, conveniences, such as showers, lockers, or latrines. The miners changed into dry clothes after work, but would not bathe or ""clean up"" until they reached their homes. Later, progressive mining companies provided bathing facilities for the employees, and eventually the present modern wash and change houses were evolved. Unfortunately, many mines, still have no bathing accommodations, and many have only makeshift accommodations."

"The concentrator at Brenda Mines Ltd. treats a copper - molybdenum porphyry ore with current head grades of 0.185% Cu and 0.036% Mo. The consistently low head grades provided the driving force to explore methods of improving plant productivity. Computer based process control was recognized as one means of addressing this objective. Over the period from 1974 to 1982 a control system evolved which now extends to every area of the mill. Control strategies are built on elements of classical, modern and rudimentary expert control. In addition, the control system has often served as a catalyst for other technological developments. The economic returns associated with the system are very significant and it has played an important role in the mine's survival in times of poor metal markets. This paper presents an overview of the computer control system at Brenda.PreambleOne can scarcely avoid picking up a trade magazine or newspaper today without seeing some reference to technology and its potential impact on North American business. _A recurring theme is the need to apply technology to raise our standard of plant automation in the manufacturing and process industries. The general thesis of these articles has been concisely captured in the mutually exclusive set:AUTOMATE or EMIGRATE or EVAPORATEProcess control is one form of automation that has been successfully exploited by various sectors of these industries. In minerals and metal processing the wide scale adoption of process control technology has, until recently, been largely limited to a few companies - most of whom have a history in the area dating back to the early 1970’s. However, there is definitely an increased and much broader interest in process control as a technology which can improve performance, productivity and profit.The economic hardships that were visited on the mining industry in the early 1980's are not easily forgotten. It is the authors' conviction that the mining industry must move to implement proven technology, in particular process control, in order to be well postured for the next (inevitable) down cycle.In pursuing the technical and trade literature, one can discover a number of example of the successful utilization of process control systems in mining and related applications. Mine reconciliation is the art and science of comparing predictions and real-world outcomes with the intent of revealing the true quality of performance of models, planning, mining, and mineral processing. When mine reconciliation is conducted in a systematic, transparent and sustainable way it can play a central role in the governance of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimation and reporting. The core processes of modelling, planning, mining, and processing need to be transparent to be able to demonstrate that MRMR are reliable predictors of mine performance and value. Transparency is also necessary for mine technical staff to generate meaningful analyses, conclusions, and business improvement actions that demonstrably maximise value for all stakeholders. Most mines have some form of mine reconciliation practice, however because there is no agreed industry standard, and because mine reconciliation is difficult for a variety of reasons, it is often unsustained and/or ineffective at delivering the required transparency of performance. To deliver true governance of MRMR and business value, mine reconciliation must be sustainable. There are two categories of issues that combine to make mine reconciliation extremely difficult to sustain, these are technical, and people related. Technical issues include defining standard terms, accurately tracking material flows, data availability/adequacy/quality, calculation of key performance indicators and tolerance limits, analysis, and interpretation of results, understanding limitations of modelling techniques, and defining appropriate actions that can deliver value. These technical challenges are non-trivial, however compounding these are a range of people issues that include personal agendas, scepticism, lack of knowledge and experience, poor teamwork, absent leadership, toxic workplace culture, staff turnover, ineffective communication, siloed organisational structure, and lack of deliberate change management. All these problems can be solved with clarity of purpose, definition of the process of mine reconciliation, discipline in following the process, appropriate resourcing, and commitment to success across the entire organisation. Outlined in this paper is a management system that delivers sustainable mine reconciliation by addressing both the technical and people issues described above. This approach can deliver significant value for a mine and adds a robust, defensible governance over MRMR estimation and reporting.

About 80 years ago the mining industry saw an advertisement of a machine manufacturer: ?One man ? one machine?, meaning the productivity gain by using a pneumatic rock drill instead of manual tools. Mechanization in mining had started. In the 1950's and 1960's when mechanization progressed the word could be transformed into the meaning of ?one man ? one drill rig?. During the 80's automatic functions were added to the machines. Automation started. In the 90's, the first autonomous machines were seen, transforming the advertisement from the 1920's into ?one man ? multiple machines? operated from a remote control room. Soon, the productivity gain achieved by pure automation will also be flating out meaning that the margin cost of further productivity gain will be inefficiently high. What next? In mining operations there is still a high potential of unused productivity lost by ?trivial? things like organization, logistics and operational management. Changing the focus from mechanization and automation towards optimizing the overall mining process will unleash another big potential for cost cuttings and for enhancing efficiency of production. Optimizing an overall process is a task of much higher total complexity compared to an isolated machine automation focus. And a successful process integration requires the collaboration of machine vendors, infrastructure suppliers, IT services and the mine itself. It requires a number of of important preconditions to be fulfilled: ? Integrated IT systems with seamless interfaces between all components and peripherals involved ? Real time information access in all locations ? Real time overview of all operational aspects A crucial aspect for all of these issues is a seamless communication both above and also under ground and IT interfaces which are easy and price efficient to implement. This paper highlights ways to achieve productivity gains by process optimization. It also discusses needs for industry wide activities in order to enable cost efficient performance of mine process optimization projects.

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

FOR the use of workmen and employees, the company should establish a dispensary and a -hospital where workmen who suffer accidents or professional diseases may be taken care of; and at suitable places in the mine or metallurgical plant it should install first-aid stations. Workmen have a right to receive 75 per cent of their wages while they are unable to perform their work as result of a professional disease; but some companies pay full wages and in the case of natural disease, with the exception of venereal, alcoholism, injuries from fights, and chronic illnesses, 50 per cent of their wages up to a period of two months. The number of diseases the Law considers as professional is large and increases almost daily. Among the professional diseases, the one which has caused greatest harm to the miners and expense to the companies is silicosis. To avoid its propagation, companies should take every possible precaution that the working atmosphere is free from dust, abating this by frequent sprinkling of the workings using, wet drills and furnishing the workmen adequate protective apparatus such as respirators.

"The evolutional process is always about solving existent problems in order to provide further achievements. But the more something evolves, the more challenges it faces towards greater evolution. Industrial automation systems in Mining have also evolved a lot in the past decades, but they now face new challenges about integration: how to integrate different locations and systems, in a way to reduce costs and increase overall mine efficiency and safety for the operation. This paper compares conventional mining process automation architectures vs. a state-of-the-art, completely integrated system using Electrical Integration based on IEC 61850 standard for Substation Automation Systems. Emphasis is placed on the benefits to manage the entire mining plant as a whole, not only looking at the production rates, but also at the energy consumption for each part of process. In addition, it is discussed how an integrated system approach unlocks safety and productivity gains such as overall process optimizations, improved operator effectiveness, increased plant availability, and reduced maintenance costs. INTRODUCTION The world is constantly changing, and evolution is a natural part of mankind history. The role of evolutional process is to solve existent problems, but usually these solutions create new issues that need to be addressed. This scenario is also applicable to the industrial environment, in which the demand for higher profitability and efficiency on their processes requires solutions with more productivity using less resource. This is not different when it comes to energy consumption: how to optimize production rates and reduce energy costs at the same time? Regarding automation systems, the trend for the industries is to focus on four main challenges: how to provide safety for personnel; how to reduce initial investment for new plants; how to connect remote and in harsh locations; and above all how to deal with the lack of integration between several systems."

"The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence at hand concerning the earliest centuries of cast iron in Europe, from roughly 1400 A.D. until the second half of the sixteenth century. For the most part it is concerned with the relationship between two technologies which emerged first in China and then later appear in Western lands, gunpowder weapons and iron founding. We should not assume, as I hope to show later in this discussion, that weapons constituted the only product for which the iron founder had any market, but it is clearly true that attempts to produce weapons constituted the most severe technical challenge for the early founder. Firearms appear for the first time in Europe in the 1320s and develop into significant weapons on the field of battle by the end of the century. Theirs is a complex history, subject neither to easy summary treatment nor to simplified models of development. I hope to be able, through the analysis of the evidence concerning cast iron, to show that one important strand in the fabric of gunpowder's history concerns the materials from which cannon could be made. This question is subject to a number of shades of meaning, because ""cannon"" can be made for many purposes under a profusion of different names, and under sharply varying conditions of use. As a result, the question of materials is frequently really a question of competing materials, and involves a complex set of factors, of which production costs and the ultimate safety of the user seem the most important. Judged in this manner cast iron was an important but unsatisfactory metal for weapons purposes until 1543, at which time English founders learned to make iron muzzle-loading cannon which could rival bronze ordnance in most important performance criteria, but which cost much less to produce. With that event, the history of cast iron and the history of weapons entered into the close relationship that persisted until the advent of rifled artillery made of steel in the middle of the nineteenth century."

Since the late 19th Century, scholars have been concerned about finding proper methods of managing business. The search seems to be taking us full-circle to the time and motion studies of Taylor (Horn, 1987). It wasn't until the late 1970's, however, that systematic investigations were made in the mining industry. One of the first was a study by Sanders, Patterson, and Peay (1976). That project explored the relationship of attitudes and safety. Peay, Atkin, and Goodman (1977, then reviewed the whole area of Organizational Development, including the so-called Rushton experiment.

The purpose of this paper is to describe several methods that have been employed in successfully recovering roof bolts in Indiana, Illinois, and western Kentucky coal mines, the States where successful roof-bolt recovery was started. As far as is known, the first bolts were recovered in a mine in western Kentucky in January or February 1951. In April 1951 a meeting was held at that mine to discuss the recovery of roof bolts. The meeting was attended by A. D. Sisk, former Chief, Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals; and L. W. Kelly, Federal Bureau of Mines; and officials of the coal company. Inasmuch as roof bolting was in its infancy, the thinking regarding roof bolts at that time was on the problem of getting them in, not getting them out; consequently, the thought of recovering them was revolutionary. The subject was discussed at length from all angles, and it was finally agreed that, if certain safeguards were taken, no agency represented at the meeting would oppose the practice. That this decision was sound has been proved, as thou-sands of bolts have been recovered in the Middle West without a lost-time accident. Recovering roof bolts is a simple operation; consequently, no complicated equipment had to be designed or built for this purpose. However, about 5 years ago, officials of the Traux-Traer Coal Co. conceived the idea and constructed a mechanical device for recovering bolts that has been very successful and has been copied widely in this area. This device will be discussed in detail in part II of this paper.

The modern economic geologist in Canada is well equipped to apply geological, geochemical or geophysical techniques in the exploration for ore. Recently, great advances have been made in geophysics and geochemistry, and a large number of new orebodies have been discovered by these methods. An attempt is made in this paper to show that there has also been a considerable advancement in geological knowledge and that the most effective application of geophysics and geochemistry often occurs in areas already considered geologically favourable for the occurrence of ore. Ali exploration methods sooner or later suffer from diminishing returns. Therefore, as time goes on, one can expect to see the application of some of the more subtle or refined geological techniques that are presently being developed.

The central Florida phosphate industry is not a recent development. The first phosphate mining occurred in approximately 1888 (1). Many of the original mining companies were "wildcat" operations operated with rapid phosphate extraction as the sole purpose and no long-term commitment to development. Many of the early pioneers were ill-equipped to mine phosphate at either a practical or economical level; as a result many of these early companies "folded" after only a brief period of operation. However, as these early companies went out of business, several large companies developed, expanded their mining territories bought up the folding companies and by 1903 (little more than 10 years after the first mines were started), approximately 37 of the original 60 mines were control- led by three major companies (1). In the early period, mining reclamation was nonexistent. The mined out areas were left to revegetate and reclaim "naturally" over the period of many years. Reclamation practices were only started relatively recently and the various reclamation techniques developed and used in the past have continued to be employed with varying degrees of success through the present time. The reclamation techniques used in the past and currently include land and lakes restoration, sand tailing reclamation, slime ponds reclamation and overburden fill.

Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau's study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds' method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds' method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. These departures are noted in the discussion which follows.

Minera Escondida, located in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile, is the world’s largest producer of copper as concentrate and SX-EW cathode. Projects to increase mill and flotation capacity began soon after start-up in 1990 to off-set decreasing copper grade. Subsequent projects had the objective to increase copper production through heap leach and SX-EW production and a second concentrator. The mine footprint concurrently expanded peripherally from the central high-grade enriched core of Escondida and then into the separate Escondida Norte deposit. Early in the mine life, metallurgical forecasting that was based on metallurgical composites of presumed ore types and historical plant production was adequate for operational planning, plant design, and project valuation. This approach became unreliable, however, as the increase in mine footprint was accompanied by an increased variability in key ore body characteristics such as hardness, copper-iron sulfide mineralogy, and sulfide liberation textures that were not reflected in the geological criteria used for ore type designation. The project study teams turned to small-scale physical and chemical tests to better characterize the spatial distribution of these key ore characteristics. Programs associated with capital growth projects were carried out through the mid-2000s to sample and construct a three-dimensional spatial model of hardness, copper sulfide mineralogy, and rougher flotation recovery from tests on 15-m drill core composites. Mathematical models were developed from the respective ore characteristic data to calculate throughput, flotation recovery, and concentrate copper grade. The spatial models were integrated with the concurrent mineral resource block model using standard geostatistical methods and the metallurgical process calculations were applied to the block estimates. The geometallurgical model, originally constructed on a project basis, is now managed by a dedicated team reporting to the manager of Geosciences & Resources Definition in the Escondida organization. The model has evolved with increasing complexity of the mine and processing plants and currently includes seven forecasting areas for three concentrators and four areas for two leach plants. Metallurgical forecasts of mill throughput, final flotation recovery, and concentrate copper grade still have the highest relevance to mine planning and optimization. Sample preparation, test procedures, and quality control methods are summarized for the ore characteristic tests important to these forecasts. Analytical results from recent annual sampling programs are presented for the hardness indices, rougher flotation recovery, and partial extraction copper analyses. Geostatistical analysis of the SAG mill hardness index is summarized as an example for the spatial estimation process. Mathematic models are presented for throughput (based on hardness indices), final flotation recovery (based on rougher recovery and plant calibration studies), and concentrate copper grade (based on sulfide mineralogy and empirical pyrite rejection studies).

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.
