"INTRODUCTION The act of Congress establishing the Bureau of Mines in 1910 delegated to the Bureau, as one of its principal duties and functions, the study of health and safety in the mineral industries with a view to devising and putting into operation means of conserving the health and safety of persons employed in the industries. One of the first health and safety activities of the Bureau of Mines was therefore organization of a trained force to promote instruction in first aid in the mineral industries. First-aid training has been an important activity of the Bureau of Mines since its establishment. The standard first-aid course requires a minimum of 15 hours of instruction and practice work. A person completing the initial training course is issued an engraved certificate and pocket card certificate; thereafter, only a pocket card certificate is issued for additional training.From 1910 to 1926 first aid was taught by trained Bureau of Mines employees; consequently, only a comparatively few persons were trained. In 1926, however, cooperative first-aid training was initiated, which provided the means to train the entire personnel of mines or plants within a short time in a single campaign. Many mines and plants have taken advantage of the cooperative plan, whereby keymen in a mine or plant, in addition to the initial training received, are given intensive training in first aid by a Bureau of Mines instructor. Those men who show an aptitude for teaching are selected as tentative provisional first-aid instructors. In order to qualify as a provisional instructor, a tentative instructor must, under the supervision of a Bureau of Mines instructor, train a class of at least six persons employed in the minerals industries in the standard Bureau of Mines course in first aid. After it has been determined that the class has been trained properly, a provisional first-aid instructor's pocket card certificate is issued to the class instructor. The first-aid instructor can renew his pocket card certificate each year by training or retraining at least six persons connected with the mineral industries to satisfactorily pass an examination given by a Bureau of Mines representative. After five yearly renewals of a provisional instructor's pocket card certificate, an engraved, permanent instructor's certificate and a permanent instructor's pocket card certificate are issued to the instructor."

The present paper represents a preliminary investigation of the ultimate structure of iron-bearing materials which have been subjected to heat treatment for the purpose of agglomerating the fines, or for chemical changes, or for both. Primarily, the object of this inquiry was to determine the relation of the microstructure of each of these materials to its specific susceptibility to the action in the blast-furnace. It is hoped that this small contribution will serve as a nucleus to a line of research that will throw some light upon the debated questions involved in blast-roasting. Thus far the investigation has been conducted along lines of analogy of known principles, rather than through the application of any well-defined system of microscopic petrography. This is obviously due to the fact that we are dealing with ma-terials which are the artificial products of a new art, rather than with the natural materials from which the essence of the pure science has been evolved. In the limited time allowed for this research, it has been conducted upon those materials the chemical content of which allows of their use commercially in the blast-furnace. The following microphotographs are arranged in the order of the degree of complete fusion to which the mass in question has been subjected, in effectively binding the particles together. A very notable fact here clearly demonstrated is that the degree of fusion to which the material has been subjected is inversely proportional to the reducibility of the product. The characteristic of the material under consideration to which reducibility is almost universally attributed call be progressively traced in the following arrangement, through the identity of the obvious microscopic constituent. The laboratory-scale reduction of fixed beds of iron ore pellets has been investigated over a range of experimental conditions. The effects of reduction temperatures, gas compos- itions and flowrates on 1) the rate of reduction and 2) the physical properties of the metallized products after reduction are being studied as part of a general programme aimed at the evaluation of the use of gaseous reductants for the direct reduction of Australian iron ores. This paper deals primar- ily with the effects of temperature on the rate of reduction using a H2/CO gas mixture. The physical properties of the metallized products such as strength after reduction, abrasion resistance and porosity are presented as functions of the reducing temperature.

Current control practice is reviewed for agglomeration processes, including pelletising, sintering and induration; and for smelting processes, including blast and reverberatory furnaces, flash smelting, the intensive bath smelting processes together with converting. The importance of sensors for on-line control and the status of mathematical modelling is discussed.Future progress in automatic control will require improved component specific sensors and the use of validated mathematical models running in parallel with the process. The possibilities in both these areas are reviewed in light of the trends towards more intensive smelting processes.

IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 30c0 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H, Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles.

Extraction of Al(III) from aqueous sulfuric acid solutions into organic Cyanex 272®-carbon tetrachloride systems was investigated from a multi-component mixture containing aluminum, cobalt and nickel. Al(III) extraction efficiency was quantitative with 1.0 M Cyanex 272® in two stages at an aqueous: organic (A:O) phase ratio of 1:1 and an equilibrium pH of 3.2. The stripping of Al(III) from the loaded organic (LO) with different acids indicated sulfuric acid to be the best stripping agent. More than 99% stripping of Al(III) from the LO was achieved using 2 M H2SO4 at an A:O phase ratio of 1:1 in a single stage. The stoichiometry of the extracted species of Al(III) was determined by the slope analysis method. The extraction reaction proceeded via the cation exchange mechanism and the extracted species was assumed to be AlA3?3HA, where HA refers to the dimeric and A the anionic form of the extractant, Cyanex 272®. The extraction of Al(III) was studied in the presence of various ions to ascertain the tolerance limit of individual ions.

"INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The lower ore grades [2] in the past couple of decades have demanded an increase on power size and efficiency of process machines to maintain a competitive plant throughput; Hydro-cyclone feed pumps to control both under and over milling or grinding are not the exception; Fig. 1 shows a conventional drive train [3] comprising an (1) asynchronous motor (also known as squirrel cage induction motor = SCIM), a high speed coupling (2), a gear reducer (3) and a low speed coupling (4) attached to the shaft of the pump (5), to accommodate the motor rated speed (typically 1800 rpm) to the process requirements (in the range of 250 rpm to 350 rpm), requiring additional components related to the gearbox: instrumentation, maintenance, disposable lubricants and filters, spare parts, thus reduces the overall system efficiency ultimately reflected into CAPEX and OPEX.WHY VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES FOR CYCLONE FEED PUMPS Hydrocyclones or commonly referred as “cyclones” are one of the most important devices in the minerals industry [4]; almost universally used in close-circuit grinding because of their high capacity and relative efficiency, the evolution of Power Electronics made affordable the use of Medium Voltage - Variable Frequency Converters (VFC) for Cyclone Feed pumps in combination with induction motors larger than 500hp (373kW) to gain multiple benefits: - Soft start with minimum electrical utility disturbance = inrush current mitigation - Full Torque available at zero speed for overload startup with pulp solidification after long still stand periods, superior to any other reduced voltage starting method. - Optimum and constant pump speed (independent of the electrical network or load condition), compared to across the line SCIM operation - Flexible Motor Voltage and Speed regardless of the power distribution Voltage and Frequency - Improved Power Factor (close to unitary), over the entire operating speed range"

The first operating unit of the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany was rated 185 tpd and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are under construction or on order. Sizes range from approximately 100-330 tpd, however, units of over 500 tons are in the design stage. The ring shaft kiln is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping (Fig. 1). Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc., are mounted at the kiln top and at the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger. Mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

Porphyry copper ores are frequently a source of low-grade gold ore, but gold in these ores is often associated with significant levels of cyanide-soluble copper. Cyanide leaching of such ores increases flowsheet complexity and operating costs, and requires thorough planning to satisfy environmental requirements for tailings disposal and mine closure. This paper presents a review of the chemistry of cyanide leaching of gold-copper porphyry ores, carbon adsorption phenomena and means of removing base metals from leach solution. The primary economic drivers behind the processing of such complex ores are also analyzed.

iV preliminary X-ray and metallographic survey of the ternary system Bi-In-Te revealed that the following isopleths could form quasibinary systems: InTe-Bi, InTe-InBi, InTe-BizTe3, and InzTe3-Bi2Te3. The nature of the InTe-Bi phase diagram was established by Bologna and Peretti.' This article presents the results of an investigation of the InTe-InBi system by thermal analysis, X-ray methods, and metallographic examination. The bismuth and tellurium were bought from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The tellurium had the following spectrographic analysis: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Si, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0002 pct Al, and 99.999+ pct Te (by difference). The bismuth assayed: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Pb, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0001 pct Cu, and 99.999+ pct Bi (by difference). The indium was obtained from the Indium Corp. of America and contained 0.002 pct Cu, 0.006 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Sn, 0.01 pct Zn, and 99.97+pct In. The classes of ore deposits in the mountain province of Colorado that have been the most productive in the past and that offer the greatest promise for the future are: (1) disseminated or stockwork molybdenum deposits associated with Tertiary stocks; (2) combination precious- and base-metal veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks; and (3) base-metal replacement deposits and veins in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Veins in Precambrian rocks, including precious metal-bearing sulfide veins, gold-silver telluride veins, and tungsten veins, have been mined extensively in the past, but their aggregate output has been far subordinate to that of the groups named above, and the outlook for major output from them in the future is poor. Principal ore deposits of south-central Wyoming are sedimentary iron ores of Precambrian age and uranium deposits in Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Precambrian deposits of several kinds are scattered through the mountains of both states. The most promising of these, based on present indications, are vanadiferous titaniferous magnetite in southern Wyoming and southwestern Colorado and thorium-niobium rare-earth deposits associated with alkalic intrusive complexes in Colorado. Most of the mining districts of Colorado are in the Colorado mineral belt, a generally narrow but somewhat irregular belt that extends northeastward across the north-trending mountain ranges and the north-northwest trending geologic grain of the state. The belt is characterized by intrusive rocks of Laramide and younger age and by ore deposits, and it occupies environments ranging from Precambrian crystalline rocks through Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks to Tertiary volcanic rocks. Two ages of intrusion and ore deposition recently have been recognized in the mineral belt. One is Laramide (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary), and the other is Oligocene. As interpreted herein, the major replacement deposits and most of the sulfide vein deposits in Precambrian and sedimentary rocks are Laramide in age, and the molybdenum deposits, the tungsten and the gold telluride veins in Precambrian rocks, and the precious- and base-metal veins in volcanic rocks are Oligocene in age. In general, the Laramide deposits are mesothermal in aspect, and the Oligocene deposits are principally epithermal. The existence of two mineralization stages, in considerable part characterized by different suites of metals, has many applications in exploration.

There is general understanding of hoisting systems throughout the mining industry. However, the relative importance of the various parameters influencing hoist selection and utilization is not completely understood. In order to determine if these parameters can be identified and prioritized, data covering 613 hoist installations were compiled. The 613 installations represent hoisting systems in 30 countries on six continents. This study compares data to historical trends, correlates design parameters in an attempt to identify underlying selection criteria, and comments on the apparent trends in recent developments in hoist design.

West Virginia, although having adequate solar insolation, has witnessed very little actual solar development to date. The reasons for this lack of development are varied, but the primary obstacles to future development appear to be the absence of state-level policies and regulations promoting growth in the solar industry. West Virginia possesses large tracts of under-utilized land throughout the state created by previous mountaintop mining operations that could theoretically be re-purposed for solar farm development. Accomplishing this task will require not only revisions to the current legislation, but also acceptance by utility companies, landowners, and mining companies. Solar developers will need confidence that they can secure revenue from the electricity and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by solar projects. Additionally, solar companies will need assurance they will be protected from any non-related environmental liabilities that could arise in the future. The primary avenue in bringing significant solar development to West Virginia will come through large corporate clients demanding or partnering with utility companies for incorporation of solar options into their energy portfolio to help meet established sustainability goals. This scenario has been witnessed in other states where a large client demands renewable options. Solar development could also represent a means through which mine operators might alleviate some of their reclamation and bonding obligations; where the landowner could supplement income from their underutilized land holdings; and where displaced miners could be repurposed in solar installation/maintenance jobs. Utilizing data from the West Virginia Permit Database, this report identifies several mine sites that hold potential for solar development in the future. INTRODUCTION The diversification of energy sources in the United States (US) has seen major shifts during the past decade resulting from: • A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques. • Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy. • The emergence of renewable energy sources, proliferated by state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs. Coal was once the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the US for most of the last century, providing approximately 50 percent of the total production capacity. However, within the past decade lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and renewable sources have steadily grown to account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.

Financial risk analysis provides the tools to examine the uncertainty of capital decisions in new mining ventures. This paper explores the methodology by which financial risks can be studied and quantified. The most commonly used risk evaluation methods, such as sensitivity analysis and discount rate adjustment, are presented as an introduction to a more comprehensive discussion of stochastic methods of discounted cash flow analysis using Monte Carlo sampling. The discussion is illustrated with examples of a stochastic discounted cash flow. The advantages of Monte Carlo sampling in risk analysis are discussed together with its problems, particularly those originating from the correlation amongst the variables that determine the economic output of a mining venture, and the difficulties created by insufficient data, imperfect knowledge and complexity. The paper also surveys the most commonly used software used in risk analysis.

"Upon completion, the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (National Radioactive Waste Repository - NRWR) will provide safe final disposal for low and medium-level radioactive waste from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary. The waste emplacement is in progress and one of the main concerns related to the development is ensuring a feasible plan is in place for permanent repository closure. Detailed hydrogeological observations and safety assessments revealed that the clay filled fault zones penetrated with the access tunnels play determinant role in the long-term confinement performance of NRWR, so they need to be plugged. Detailed mechanical analysis and numerical modelling of the tunnel constructed through a fault zone is presented here to gain a better understanding of the rock mass and rock support behavior. The effect of stress reflection is demonstrated and its consequences are described in detail. A recommendation is given for tunnel support design in such conditions. INTRODUCTION Crossing fault zones is a challenging task during tunnel construction and can lead to failure if not properly accounted for during design and construction. These failures are can be caused by high water inflow or stability loss of the rock mass surrounding of the tunnel (examples can be found in CEDD, 2015). The prediction of the magnitude and development of displacement has a considerable impact on issues during tunnel construction. Changes of rock mass stiffness or structure ahead of the face, to a great extent influencing stresses in the vicinity of the tunnel and thus deformations (Steindorfer, 1998). Further research with numerical simulations was carried out, and the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of displacement vector is presented in (Grossauer et al, 2005). The concern associated with crossing fault zones was considered during the design of the Bátaapáti deep underground radioactive waste repository complex (NRWR) in Hungary. In the case of NRWR project, the fault zones have an impact on maintaining the stability of the surrounding rock mass as well as the final sealing of the repository. As part of the final closure design, a complex numerical modelling program was completed to gain a better understanding of the mechanical behavior of the rock mass and the monitoring observations during construction. Even though the need for the presented study is closely related to the NRWR project, the results can be used in any project related to fault zone crossing. The methodology used to better understand the impact of crossing fault zones for the NRWR project is presented in this paper. First the project background is introduced including an overview of the underground facilities, the aim of the repository, and the construction experience gained from the first crossings of the fault zones. After that the in-situ and laboratory testing is summarized. The numerical modelling methodology is detailed in the next section. Not only the outcome of the model is presented, but the results are compared with the experience and observations made on site. Since a good agreement is found between the actual and the modelled behavior, the conclusions are based on the validated result. To fulfill the aim of the paper, the stress reflection concept is introduced to explain the mechanical behavior of the fault zone and the rock support; furthermore straightforward suggestions are made for rock support design."
