The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

The smelting of calcium carbide has always been plagued by eruptions, too often with serious injury y or loss of life. To find their causes, the author calculated an internal energy balance using 1992 data for CaC2 and CaO, and older data for the remaining items. The heat content of the charge, and that of the hot gases formed at the reduction temperature, showed that only a fraction of its heat content can be supplied by these gases. Laboratory data on the electrical resistivity of fine mixtures of coke and non-conductive solids were extrapolated to a commercial carbide charge, and then used to calculate the heat produced by current flowing through the mix from the electrode surface to the hearth, which, under favourable conditions, sufficed to bring the charge to 1900 K and higher, at which temperatures reduction could take place.

Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.

Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956. The mining operations are located in a primitive area of Idaho among salmon spawning grounds and crystal-clear mountain trout streams. To avoid involvement in a very controversial issue, it appeared advisable for the company to develop water treatment procedures exceeding those requirements stated in the Idaho Dredge Mining Protective Act. Operation: The company operates one 6 cu ft continuous bucketline dredge and one 4 1/4 cu ft continuous bucketline dredge on the property. The dredges are jig-equipped, with feed being screened to 3 in. by trommels. The screening and gravity concentration methods satisfactorily separate the heavy minerals from companion clays, sand, and gravel. However, this separation of the heavy minerals requires water from the dredge pond with a minimum content of silt and colloids; therefore, water for dilution is added continuously to the dredge pond to suppress solids buildup. Discharge of this highly turbid water to maintain the proper pond level would ultimately result in an excessive silt load in Bear Valley Creek. To prohibit the turbid pond water from flowing directly into Bear Valley Creek, it was necessary to isolate the dredging area. Main by-pass canals were constructed along each side of the dredge pond and numerous secondary canals were dug for diverting seepage and snow runoff. One by-pass canal, extending more than two miles along the west side of the valley, diverts the main stream as well as tributaries entering from the west; a canal east of the dredge area diverts streams entering from that direction. At the beginning of operations in 1956, the dredge pond effluent was filtered through tailings and settled by use of coagulents in a series of lagoons. The filtrate was then discharged directly into the stream. Although this procedure gave satisfactory results in conformance with the state law, ice buildup and lagoon freezing hindered the efficiency of the process during periods of low temperature. For this reason, testing began in 1956 on a water treatment process that would operate efficiently under the extreme weather conditions encountered in Bear Valley. Development of Water Treatment System: Porter Bros. Corp. established the following requirements for effective continuous treatment of dredge pond effluent to the stream which, at low flow conditions, effluent to the stream which, at low flow conditions, would not result in a turbidity exceeding 25 ppm in the stream, 2) produce a sludge sufficiently dense to minimize disposal area requirements, 3) be semi-portable to follow dredge movements, 4) be capable of operating at low temperatures, and 5) be capable of handling a variety of capacities and turbidities.

The amplitudes and frequencies of vibratiolls of a four-story stucco building were measured by specially developed electrocapacitive seismometers. Records were made on three floor levels with as many as 10 seismometers recording simultancously. Sources of vibration were: (1) an electric motor with unbalanced pulley, maximum speed 1800 r.p.m., maximum centrifugal force 90 lb., (2) truck traffic (both solid and pneumatic tires) moving over inequalities in the street in front of the house, (3) falling weights dropped on the street pavement from different heights, (4) miscellaneous sources, including a man jumping on the floor of the house and slamming doors. Tests were made to determine the natural frequencies of floor and wall panels by varying the speed of the unbalanced motor and by exciting the panels with a single impulse. The vibrations recorded were compared to records of vibrations from quarry blasts and it was observed that the vibrations from truck traffic were comparable to those recorded from quarry blasts and in no instance was there any damage to the building. As the tests were all of a negative character as far as damage was concerned, no index of destruction is formulated. Instead, the records are presented simply as vibration measurements obtained in an ordinary house under typical conditions.

Mica is a generic term that applies to a group of complex aluminosilicate minerals that have a sheet or plate-like structure and with different chemical compositions and physical properties. All micas form flat six-sided monoclinic crystals with remarkable cleavage parallel to the direction of the large surfaces, which permits them to be split into optically flat films; as thin as 1µm in thickness in some cases (Rajgarhia, 1987). Some micas are more easily split than others. For example, muscovite mica found in pegmatites is more easily split into thin films than is phlogopite. Mica found in mica schist is not as easily delaminated as mica found in weathered pegmatites. According to Dawson (1 949), the commercially important mica minerals are: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless to pale green and ruby) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (dark brown to black) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (pale yellow to dark brown) Vermiculite-hydrated biotite or magnesium-iron-mica (bronze yellow flakes) Lepidolite-potassium-lithium mica (pale lilac to deep purple) Some micas of less importance are: Zinnwaldite-lithium-iron mica (gray to smoky brown) Roscoelite-vanadium-potassium-magnesium mica (various shades of green and brown) Mica, principally muscovite, is widely used for industrial applications because of its exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties (Table 1). Phlogopite and vermiculite follow muscovite in importance. Biotite finds very little commercial application at the present time. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms. These forms and their description follow: Sheet mica refers to books of mica either mined from hard rock (pegmatites) or from loosely consolidated clayey material formed from the weathering of pegmatites and alaskites. These books can be readily split into thin film or splittings with specific thicknesses ranging from 0.0031 to 0.10 mm (Davis, 1985). Quality sheet mica is graded into 10 quality classifications (Tables 2 and 3). Books of mica that are flawed with excess inclusions, cracks, or folds (A mica) are called scrap mica and are either ground into commercial products by a dry or wet process. Built-up mica was developed in 1894 as a result of the cost and scarcity of sheet mica, and because many satisfactory electrical parts could be made from it (Preston, 1971). This type mica is formed by layering pieces of mica splittings upon one another and binding them together with inorganic or organic binders. These sheets are then pressed together under high temperature. Mica for this process is produced from pieces of sheet mica too small to be punched into electrical parts (Davis, 1985). Reconstituted mica is mica paper produced by forming a mat of very thin delaminated flakes of scrap mica. This mat is usually impregnated with an organic binder, but is also available unimpregnated. It is dried at 110°C. The mica for this process is either produced from the trimmings of a sheet mica operation or from blocks of A type mica (Davis, 1985, Chapman, 1983). Ground mica constitutes by far the largest use of mica, both quantitatively and application wise. It is produced by grinding and sizing scrap mica (also mica concentrate) obtained from five sources, 1) trimming from sheet mica, 2) A type mica blocks, 3) as a byproduct of spodumene and feldspar mining, 4) weathered pegmatites and alaskites, and 5) metamorphic schists. Synthetic mica is produced by crystal growth in a slowly cooled melt of accurately proportioned chemical oxides. Extended cooling times at a specific viscosity result in larger crystals. Many different micas have been formed by this process; however, fluorophlogopite is the most common.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for electrodepositing titanium diboride from a molten salt bath. Initially, the electrolyte is a mixture of LiBO2, NaB02, Na2 Ti03 , Li2Ti03, and Ti02? The cell is operated at 900° C in a dry, inert atmosphere with consumable anodes of titanium or hot-pressed titanium diboride (TiB2) powder. Agitation of the electrolyte is essential. Current densities may be 6 to 9 amperes per square decimeter (amp/dm2) with titanium anodes and 9 to 30 amp/dm2 with titanium diboride anodes. A current density of 6 amp/dm2 is equivalent to a plating rate of about 35 micrometers per hour. The adherence of the TiB2 deposit varies with the substrate material. It is most adherent on molybdenum and on 4130 steel that has been preplated with copper and nickel, less adherent on nickel, and still less adherent on Inconel and on 4130 steel without the preplate. The problem of preferred orientation has been considered in quantitative phase analysis by X-ray diffraction techniques. The average intensity of a diffraction peak can be obtained by integration over the whole pole figure, or by random rotation of the specimen in the X-ray beam, or by a combination of both. For rod or wire, where the pole figure shows rotational symmetry, the intensity is measured along a radius of the pole figure. Where no symmetry is present, rotational symmetry is imparted by rapid rotation of the sheet around its surface normal during measurement. These methods are applied to the determination of aus-tenite in an Fe-31 pct Ni rod and Fe-28 pct Ni sheet. X-RAY diffraction techniques are frequently used for quantitatively determining the relative amounts of two or more phases present in a structure.1,2 Briefly, the method requires a measurement of the intensity of a Bragg reflection for each phase. The method is based on the principle that the intensity of a Bragg reflection, IA, is directly proportional to the volume fraction of the given phase present, CA: T KRACA/2µ [1] where K is a constant independent of the diffracting phase, RA can be calculated and depends on the Bragg angle ? and the particular reflection measured, and µ is the linear absorption coefficient of the mixture.' For a mixture of two phases A and B, IA = RAcA [2] IA/IB=RAcA/Rbcb and CA+ CB = 1 [3] This allows the volume fraction of a phase to be calculated directly from the measured integrated intensities of the two phases present. This method is frequently used for quantitatively determining retained austenite in steels, but can be used for the quantitative determination of in titanium alloys, as well as phases in other alloy systems. The intensities are generally measured by diffracting only from planes whose normals are perpendicular to the specimen surface, with the implicit assumption being made that this intensity is typical of reflections from planes whose normals lie at other angles to the surface. If the specimen contains a texture or preferred orientation of the crys- tallographic planes by virtue of previous mechanical working, however, this measured intensity is correct only if the intensity level fortuitously is one times random. Examination of pole figures for actual rolled sheet shows that the intensity level at the center of the figure is seldom at the random level, and can very easily differ by a factor of five or more, leading to a commensurate error in the calculated amount of the phases. Textures have been commonly found in materials which are cold-rolled or recrystallized after cold rolling. This problem is becoming of greater importance since structural materials in use today, such as the high-strength stainless steels, frequently are further strengthened by cold rolling, and hence contain textures. Although high-strength carbon-containing alloy steels generally do not contain textures, some of the newer thermomechani-cal treatments will impart a texture even in these cases. In the case of hexagonal metals, such as titanium, probably every wrought sample will show some anisotropy. Since the standard X-ray techniques are inapplicable in all these cases, there is a clear need for some method of taking this anisotropy into account. The specific problem is to obtain the integrated intensity of a Bragg reflection for each phase, averaged over all orientations of the sample with respect to the X-ray beam. Beryllium-base alloys have been successfully p7.-epared by the liquid-phase sintering technique. Depending orz the composition and amount of the intended liquid please, microstructures either single -phase or duplex in feature with randomly oriented grains have been obtained. Qualitative and semi-qualitative determination of distribution of alloying elements md microsegregations in some experi)uzental alloys haue been made by electron-micro-probe analysis in conjunction with microliardness testing and standard metallography. Tensile tests reoealed that some conzpositions possess attractive elastic properties with Young's mot1uli greater than 40 X 10' psi. In powder metallurgy, liquid-phase sintering is a process or phenomenon that has proven to be of practical value. For example, the heavy metals such as tungsten-copper-nickel, high-strength heavy gyro alloys,' heavy-duty electrical contacts,' and tungsten carbide tool materials are all products of liquid-phase sintering. Mechanisms involved in liquid-phase sintering, however, are not completely understood. Questions regarding the exact roles played by rearrangement of particles, liquid/vapor surface energy, solution and precipitation, and so forth, have not been completely answered. Evidence has been cited3 that at least volume shrinkage in the densification process is diffusion-controlled. It is possible that the predominant mechanisms for the complete densification and grain growth in a liquid-phase sintered system depend primarily on the alloy systems involved, in addition to processing conditions. Despite the lack of sound understanding of the mechanisms of the process, liquid-phase sintering has been and is being used to advantage either to synthesize microstructures for their special properties or to prepare alloys which are difficult to form by fusion process. Liquid-phase sintering of beryllium alloys was first attempted by Jones and Williams.4 They first tried infiltrating beryllium with magnesium, and then succeeded in preparing the alloy by sintering Be-Mg powder compact in molten magnesium bath. This investigation resulted in the identification of some Mg-Be intermediate phases. Crossley et a1.5 also used liquid-phase sintering technique in an attempt to produce ductile beryllium alloys for structural applications. The major liquid-phase components investigated by Crossley et al. were aluminum and silver with minor additives of germanium, calcium, lanthanum, cerium, and yttrium. The lack of wetting and the bleeding out of liquid phase were the difficulties encountered during experimentation. According to Hodge,6 the two compositions investigated by Crossley, which showed some promise based on compression tests, involved large amounts (over 35 wt pct) of silver, thus making them too heavy to be of practical interest to the aerospace industry and military users. The present investigation was prompted by the search for light-weight (density less than aluminum) beryllium alloys exhibiting small anisotropy in physical properties for precision inertial navigation instrument applications. In addition to isotropy, good structural properties such as high elastic modulus or desirable combination of mechanical and physical properties are also objectives of this investigation. The technique of liquid-phase sintering was chosen for its versatility in producing either duplex or homogeneous microstructures. This report is concerned with the use of copper and aluminum, with or without silicon addition, as the intended liquid phase, and the resultant micro-structures and some physical properties of the beryllium alloys. Qualitative and semiquantitative electron-microprobe analyses of some of the alloys are presented to illustrate the usefulness of this microanalytical technique for the identification of microconstituents and their distribution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The beryllium powder used was -200 mesh Brush Beryllium Co. QMV NP-50 grade. Typical chemical analysis of the powder is shown in Table I. Commercial high-purity copper, aluminum, and silicon powders all screened to —100 mesh were used as additions. Mixed powder compositions were ball-milled in ceramic jars for 1/2 hr to ensure thorough blending. Milled powder was loaded either in 3/4-in.-diam button die or in Metal Powder Association flat tensile specimen die and compacted under top and bottom pressure. No lubricant or organic binder was used. Sintering was carried out in a quartz tube under a vacuum of 50 to 100 µ pressure. Continuing tantalum alloy development studies have been concerned with a more detailed investigation of promising binary, ternary, and more complex tantalum alloys containing Groups IV-A, V-A, VI -A. VII-A, and VII-A metal additions. A primary objective of these studies was to improve the elevated temperature strength of tantalum with minimum degradation of fabricability and low-temperature ductility by alloying. Several alloys were found to exhibit hot tensile strengths in the excess of 25, 15, and 10 ksi at 2700°, 3000°, and 3500°F, respectively, combined with excellent cryogenic toughness and ductility. Particularly outstanding in this respect are alloys in the system Ta-Mo-W. Ternary parameter curves describing hot-strength, low-temperature ductility, recrystallization temperature, weld ductility, and fabricability are presented for the Ta-Cb-V, Ta-Hf-W, Ta-Mo-Hf, Ta-Mo-V, Ta-Mo-W, and Ta-V-W systems. At present, only four metals qualify for large scale structural applications at temperatures above about 1800°F. These are tungsten, tantalum, molybdenum, and columbium. Research and development work on these refractory metals has progressed to the point where efforts are now primarily directed toward the improvement of high- and low-temperature mechanical properties through alloying. High melting point combined with excellent low-temperature ductility, fabricability, toughness, weldability, and high solubility and tolerance for both substitutional and interstitial solutes are important attributes of tantalum. Conversely, its high density and relative scarcity compared with other refractory metals are the major deterrents to the use of tantalum. Early studies in the Battelle alloy development program established base line data on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of high-purity tantalum.' These studies were extended to include a preliminary investigation of the effects of various alloying elements on the established base properties.2,3 Recent studies involved a more detailed investigation of promising binary alloys containing Cb, Hf, Mo, Os, Re, Ru, and W, and ternary Ta-Cb-V, Ta-Hf-W, Ta-Mo-Hf, Ta-Mo-V, Ta-Mo-W, and Ta-V-W alloys. Results of major importance obtained are given in this article. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electron-beam-melted tantalum (Wah Chang) and high-purity alloying elements were consolidated as 150-g ingots by multiple nonconsumable arc melting under a partial atmosphere of helium. Homogeneity of the button ingots was checked radiographically. Alloy buttons measured about 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 in. in diam by about 0.35 and 0.50 in. thick. Nominal alloy compositions were checked on each alloy button by weighing after arc melting. In most instances, weight losses were within 3 pct of the total weight charged. Subsequent chemical analyses on a number of selected alloys showed interstitial contents to range as shown below: Range of Interstitial Content, ppm 0 C N H 25-75 50-100 10-50 1-5 Metallic alloying additions were found to agree well with nominal compositions based on weight change data. Fabrication directly from the cast button to sheet was conducted at low (75° to 900°F), intermediate (1800° to 2000°F), or high (3000°F) temperatures, depending upon alloy content and hardness. Evacuated stainless steel or molybdenum packs were used for fabrication at intermediate and high temperatures, respectively. The temperature required to complete recrystal-lization in one hour was determined by hardness measurements and metallographic observations (longitudinal test sections) after vacuum annealing at 180°F intervals in the range 2010° to 2910°F. All mechanical property evaluations were conducted on recrystallized sheet, nominally 0.04 in. thick. Weldability of the various alloys was screened using manual TIG welding techniques. Bend ductility (bend axis perpendicular to weld axis) was the criterion used for evaluation. Tensile specimens employed 0.200 by 1 in. gage lengths, and bend test specimens measured about 1 by 1/4 in. Low-temperature tensile tests were conducted using a crosshead speed of 0.02 in. per min up to the point of yielding, and 0.05 in. per min to fracture. High-temperature tensile tests were conducted in vacuum using a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min

Proceeding from statistical data on the development of waste volume, an endeavour was made to characterise waste materials with regard to the applicability of treatments based on mineral processing. Many types of waste are characterised by a high heterogeneity. The separation processes used for processing raw minerals can also be used for separation of various waste mixtures. For some waste mixtures, differences in properties can be utilised for separation which are mostly less distinctive for raw minerals. State-of-the-art technology is illustrated with selected Examples.

The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. Calcium or hydrogen peroxide, collectively known as peroxygens, can be used. The choice depending on plant design and the nature of the ore. Laboratory test work and plant trials are included in this paper to illustrate the benefits of peroxygen usage in extractive gold metal- lurgy.

THE rate of elimination of carbon largely controls the time required to make a heat of steel by the basic open-hearth process and to an important degree determines the cost of refining. Practical experience has led to the generally accepted belief that the use of slags relatively high in iron oxide, such as are required to bring about rapid refining, leads to a certain sacrifice of quality in the product. As a consequence, a compromise must be made between the exceedingly slow rate of carbon drop which would correspond to the ideal case and the rapid rate which would best satisfy the condition of minimum cost. An increase in rate of refining necessarily implies an increase in the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. However, even for the infinitely slow rate that corresponds to slag-metal equilibrium, the metal would contain a certain definite concentration of dissolved iron oxide. It is a matter of great practical importance, therefore, to determine the quantitative relation between the minimum or equilibrium concentration of iron oxide in the metal and the higher concentrations which must actually obtain in practice. The present paper is devoted to the development of certain equations, derived from the established laws of physical chemistry, which will enable this relation between rate of refining and the degree of oxidation of the metal bath to be computed from operating data. No attempt is made to exhaust the possibilities of this general method of treatment. In considering rate of refining, attention is mainly confined to rate of carbon elimination. However, the equations are of a more general nature and their application may readily be extended. The results of the preliminary calculations given herein indicate that increased rate of refining may have a decided effect in increasing the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The uncertainty. which attaches to the calculated value for this relationship arises in part from probable errors in experimental data on which the calculations are based, and in part from the lack of complete or favorably disposed information on basic open-hearth practice.

For the past thirteen years, the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch have hosted an annual symposium to discuss topics relevant to mineral processing. Since 1987, this Symposium has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has become one of the main events on the national conference calendar. In 1989 and 1993, the symposia took the shape of international conferences. This year the 13th Annual Mineral Processing Symposium was organized by the two universities, the Cape Technikon, and the local branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay.
