A blasting project was undertaken at the Teck Alaska Red Dog Mine in 2005 to 2007 to determine the extent that using electronic detonators could increase Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill throughput. The results of that project were reported at the 2010 ISEE Annual Conference. This paper is a postscript to that project and provides the fragmentation resulting from the implementation of a 15% pattern expansion using electronic detonators.

THE solubility of graphite in y-iron has been determined by several workers'12 with reasonable agreement. With the increasing use of more complex steels, it is necessary to understand more fully the thermodynamics of the austenite phase. The activity of carbon in a number of alloys is known but the maximum solu- bility of graphite has only been measured by Sohnchen and piwowarsky3 for Fe-Ni and Fe-Si alloys. Recently, Chipman and Brush reviewed the published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite and also obtained expressions for calculating the solubility of graphite in Fe-Ni, Fe-Co, and Fe-Si alloys. On comparing the theoretically derived solubilities with the limited results of Sahnchen and Piwowarsky, it was found that the agreement for Fe-C-Si was excellent but there was considerable discrepancy for Fe-C-Ni and no data for Fe-C-Co. It was therefore decided to measure the solubility of graphite in a series of Fe-Ni and Fe-Co alloys. The alloy samples were made up by induction melting a high-purity master alloy under an inert atmosphere in an alumina crucible and drawing the molten metal into four-bore alumina tubes. Using this technique, it was possible to form alloy rods approximately 2 in. long and 1/18 in. in diam. Sixteen lengths of fine rod could be made without solidifying the master alloy. These were then allowed to cool under the inert atmosphere before being sectioned. The samples were packed in a graphite crucible with spectroscopic graphite powder, together with a piece of pure iron foil. Dry hydrogen, which had been saturated with isopropyl alcohol at room temperature, was passed over the crucible at 1000°C for 72 hr. At the end of the 72 hr argon displaced hydrogen in the reaction tube and the crucible was quickly pushed to the water-cooled end. "This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

The publication of the report by Mr. F. L. Ransome1 was welcomed by many engineers who had mined in the heart of the San Juan country, braved its long and snowy winters, climbed its lofty peaks, run the gauntlet of its snow-slides, and studied its problems of geology, while making dividends for their English or American clients. This report helps one to understand why the bonanzas occurred, and why the inevitable " borrasca " presents itself where least expected. The Red Mountain district of Ouray county, a very productive section from 1884 to 1893, occupies considerable space in the report mentioned. The character of the ore-occurrence.

Conditions in the oil and gas industry in Indiana were about the same in 1935 as in 1934. This is especially true of the old Trenton area and the Harrison County area where production was steady and almost no exploration and development took place. The past year has seen an increase in drilling activity and a decrease in oil and gas output in southwestern Indiana. In the state, 224 wells were completed in 1935, of which 48 were oil wells, 61 gas wells, and 115 dry holes. A few of these were old gas wells deepened to oil horizons. Twenty-six wells started during 1935 were not completed by Dec. 31. Approximately one-half the wells drilled were within proven areas. A relatively large number of wildcats, especially in Daviess, Pike and Gibson Counties, were in search of new gas supplies to supplant the diminishing resources in those counties. The decreased production of gas was due largely to the fact that existing supplies declined more rapidly than new fields could be brought on. The Alford field, in Pike County, which produced the bulk of the supply in 1934, was called on to do likewise in 1935, but was unable to respond sufficiently to keep up the yearly production for southwestern Indiana. During the last half of the year, the Oaktown field, Knox County, was connected with one of the principal pipe lines of the state, which helped to keep gas production above an unusual low. The decline in oil production was due almost entirely to proration during the first eight months of the year. The proration affected Daviess, Pike, Gibson, Sullivan and Vigo counties, which produce about three-fourths of the total for the state. After proration was lifted, the wells never quite reached the conditions existing before proration. The average daily production per well in Indiana is less than two barrels. The outstanding development in Indiana in 1935 was the drilling in the Oaktown field immediately before and after the laying of the 6-in. pipe line to the field. Results for the first underground test of the ventilated drum in a U.S. coal mine are presented. Tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines through a contract research program with Foster-Miller, Inc., to evaluate dust control effectiveness in a western mine and for gas control in a full scale laboratory facility. The ventilated drum is designed to reduce the amount of dust from cutting by drawing dust-laden air from the cutting zone through twelve water- powered "dust capture" tubes built into the shell of the shearer drum. High pressure water up to 1 12.48 kg per cm2 (1,600 psig), released from sprays, induces maximum airflow of 1.89 m3/sec (4,000 cfm) from the face side of the drum and provides cleaning for respirable dust and improved methane dispersion. At the gob side of the drum a deflector plate, attached to the cowl arm, turns the water spray and a proportion of the cleaned air back into the cutting zone. More than 50 ventilated drums have been installed to date in England, and their tests carried out on fixed height and single-ended ranging drum shearers have shown reductions in respirable dust of 60-80 pct, as compared with conventional wet cutting. The U.S. test on a double drum shearer showed slightly lower reduction.

Caissons hand dug to a depth of about 100 feet were used to underpin three important structures at an industrial site in the State of Utah. The caisson shafts extended through 30 to 40 feet of coarse, granular soils and 25 to 60 feet of sands and clays to bear on a very dense, coarse gravel and cobble stratum near the water table. The shafts were belled to 12 feet square at their bearing elevation. Bearing pressures of 20 ksf were assigned. The shafts were lagged with timber. The use of hand-dug caissons allowed continuous operation of the facility during underpinning. Settlements after underpinning have been minor and well within the estimated magnitudes. Instrumentation was placed in two of the caissons with varying degrees of success.

Low metal prices and environmental restrictions are always a challenge for copper smelters operation and its productivity. Thus, in order to reduce production costs and control gas emissions, improvements of the Teniente Converter (CT) operation were made at 110 Smelter Plant of Southern Peru Copper Co., 110, Peru, and the main objective was to increase its capacity for smelting copper concentrates without affecting normal operation. The present work corresponds to a recent study conducted during the normal industrial operation of the Teniente Converter in this plant and, it shows the effect of increasing air oxygen enrichment from 28 to 34% on its productivity. The results show an increasing of concentrate smelting rate from 800 to 1370 tpd and hence a notorious improving in copper production, and practically no effect on the refractory consumption. The increment of the concentrate throughput, increases also the SO2 concentration and the sulfuric acid production, showing the effort done by this operation in order to accomplish the environmental Peruvian regulation.

IN 1925 the writer undertook a detailed statistical study of all producing areas in the Joplin district as a basis for evaluating programs and measuring objectives. For this purpose, the published figures in the yearly volumes of Mineral Resources were used, supplemented for earlier years by publications of the Missouri Geological Survey and other local and less official sources. When all else failed, the available data were projected backward to hazard a reasonable guess as to the unrecorded early output of important areas. Fortunately, the proportion of such prehistory production is not a large factor in any of the totals. These results were used during the next few years to measure the relative importance of various producing areas and to predict the peak period of development of the all-important Picher field. For the purpose of this review, the charts have been completed to the end of 1950. During World War 11, the U. S. Bureau of Mines became interested in a similar study and issued comprehensive statistical tabulations of data up to 1945 ( Info. Circular 7383), which have been checked against the figures used herein. This tabulation, however, does not include all the earlier data used by the writer nor does it offer any estimates of the wholly unrecorded era in the beginnings of the earlier camps.

"Statistics show3 that in 1927 the United States consumed 60 per cent of the world's production of chromite and produced none. The uses of chromium are rapidly expanding, and a dependable supply is essential to our industries. Since the political and commercial control of our supply of chromite is now in foreign hands it is prudent to determine how this nation can best prepare to supply its need for chromium if the imports were cut off or restricted and whether it is now possible and desirable to stimulate production of chromium from domestic deposits. We have only small amounts of chrome ore of high enough grade to meet present trade requirements. Therefore the Bureau of Mines is making a study of methods for beneficiating our low-grade ores.Chromite (Cr203.Fe0), is the only commercial source of chromium. For refractories, a minimum of 40 per cent Cr203 and a low silica content (5 to 8 per cent) is usually specified. In most instances bricks or lumps having a physical structure that will not crack when heated are required. The only way an inferior ore could be adapted to this use world be to concentrate it and develop a satisfactory binder to make bricks out of the concentrates.For making ferrochrome the requirements are a minimum of 45 per cent Cr203 and an iron content not exceeding one-third of the chromic oxide. On some low-grade ores gravity concentration will give a product meeting these requirements; other ores yield concentrates containing too much iron or other impurities to be saleable."

The dissolution of low-iron sphalerite, (Zn,Fe)S containing 0.08% Fe, in ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid media was investigated using closely sized fractions of crushed sphalerite crystals and sintered disks made from the crushed crystals. Linear kinetics are observed, and the predominant reaction products are ZnSO4, FeSO4 and elemental sulphur. The leaching rate increases systematically with increasing temperature, and the calculated apparent activation energy is 56 kJ/mol for the sized sphalerite and 54 kJ/mol for the sintered disks. The relatively high apparent activation energy suggests that the rate is chemically controlled, a conclusion supported by the insensitivity of the rate to the disk rotation speed. The rate increases as the 0.22 power of the Fe(SO4)1.5 concentration, and as the 0.22 power of the H2SO4 concentration. However, in the absence of ferric ions, the rate increases more significantly with increasing H2SO4 concentrations, and relatively rapid rates are observed in solutions containing >0.5 M H2SO4. In 0.1 M Fe(SO4)1.5-0.3 M H2SO4 media, the measured rate decreases with increasing sulphate concentrations, added as Li2SO4. The rate of dissolution of low-iron sphalerite is promoted by dissolved copper concentrations as high as 800 mg/L. In contrast, dissolved silver, even in the 0-2 mg/L concentration range, significantly retards the dissolution of the low-iron sphalerite.

THE development of the natural resources of any district of any magnitude, inevitably gives rise to many problems off title, usually due to the greatly enhanced value of the land. The development of the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency has been no exception to this general rule. Our problems, how-ever, have not been many or particularly serious. The Quapaws were allotted and patents issued by the United States Government in 1895. These patents contained a restriction against alienation for a pe-riod of twenty-five years. The effect of the restric-tion was to prevent the Indian from selling, leasing, or in any way encumbering his land. The Govern-ment, in a paternalistic spirit, sought to teach the Indian thrift and industry and to insure him a place of residence. This is evidenced by the first Leasing Act passed by Congress, which permitted only incom-petents and those physically disabled to lease their land for either agricultural or mining purposes. The able-bodied Indian was denied the right to lease. It soon became apparent to the Government, how-ever, that this was a mistaken policy, and in 1897 a General Leasing Act was passed by Congress and it was under this act that the mining industry in the Quapaw Agency was developed. The act, reads as follows: "That the allottees of land within the limits of the Qua- paw Agency, Indian Territory, are hereby authorized to lease their lands, or any part thereof, for a term not ex-ceeding three years, for farming or grazing purposes, or ten years for mining or business purposes. And said al-lottees and their lessees and tenants shall have the right to employ such assistants, laborers, and help from time to time as they may deem necessary: Provided, That when-ever it shall be made to appear to the Secretary of the Interior that, by reason of age or disability, any such allottee cannot improve or manage his allotment properly and with benefit to himself, the same may be leased, in the discretion of the Secretary, upon such terms and conditions as shall be prescribed by him. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this are hereby repealed." It was the interpretation of this Act that gave rise to our first serious problems. It will be noted that the Act says that "allottees of land" within the limits of the Quapaw Agency are authorized to lease their land. Thus, the first question was presented by the use of the term "allottee," and the question was as to whether or not Congress intended to limit the Quapaw Indian to the leasing of his own allotment or did Congress mean that the term "allottee" was synonym-ous with "Indian" and intend to give the Indian a right to lease both his allotment and his inherited land and was an Indian without an allotment an "allottee" even though he was a member of the Qua-paw tribe and the owner of the Quapaw land by in-heritance, and not being an allottee, could he lease his inherited Quapaw land under the authority granted in this Act?

In recent times, with rare exceptions, most economically viable ore discoveries have been large, low-grade and located in remote parts of the world. Mining companies have often shown to be incapable of mitigating their social and economic impact on local communities. Sustainable development and relations can be achieved by implementing bottom-up methodologies to the top-down tools already in use by mining companies. In order to magnify the importance of enterprise facilitation as a primary method for community development, data from 25 years of community based work around the world was used. Results highlight the need for a grassroots approach to local economic and community development, which focuses on the creation of a parallel economy in communities. Using solely top-down methodologies for developing community relations is shown to be a limited resource for mining companies. There are fundamentally two dangers for mining companies: alienating the local population, resulting in militancy and lengthy legal battles to obtain a license to operate; and, being accountable for building social and economic infrastructure that are not the company?s responsibility.

Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines has undertaken a research project to develop the mechanical roof pulling technique as a method for evaluating the effectiveness and the comparative advantages and disadvantages of various roof bolting systems for underground coal mines, based on the characteristic responses of bolted mine roofs to a prescribed external loading system. Two preliminary experiments of the test method were conducted in the Bureau&apos;s Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) at Bruceton, Pa., and further trials are underway. The fundamental concept of the test method, the design of test rigs, and the experimental results are summarized in this progress report.

Historically, research organizations have made significant contributions to the development and commercialization of new chemical products for the mining industry and examples of commercial results are cited With the recent demise of research organizations within the mining industry and dynamic changes in the industry, the supporting role of R&D groups has become limited or non-existent. Cat- reduction requirements and new raw-material sources offer future opportunities for R&D organizations to continue their effective participation in the commerical development of new chemical products. Potential areas of interest for future process applications are reviewed.

IN a previous publication1 1200°C isothermal phase diagram sections were given for the Cr-CO-Ni, Cr-Co-Fe, Cr-Co-Mo, and Cr-Ni-Mo ternary systems, in which the a phase formed narrow, elongated solid solution fields. The present investigation is concerned with the 1200°C isothermal sections of the Co-Ni-Mo, Co-Fe-Mo, and Ni-Fe-Mo ternary systems. A prominent feature of these systems is the presence of narrow, elongated µ phase fields. The crystal structure of the phase designated as µ both here and in the previous publication1 was determined by Arnfelt and Westgren.2 For the (CO, W)µ phase, named by them Co,W, (and also frequently designated as a), these authors found that the crystal system is hexagonal-rhombohedra1 and the space group is D53d — R3,. Westgren and Mag-neli3 later found that isomorphous phases exist in the Fe-W and the Fe-Mo systems (these phases are often referred to as < and E, respectively). Henglein and Kohsok4 stated that the phase described by them as Co7Mo,; (otherwise frequently designated as c) is also isomorphous with the above three. The Co-Fe-Mo system was investigated at 1300°C by Koester and Tonn,5 who found a continuous series of solid solutions between (Co, MO)µ and (Fe, MO)µ Koester6 also indicated similar uninterrupted solid solutions in the Ni-Fe-Mo system. However, since the Ni-Mo binary system does not have a phase isomorphous with F, Koester&apos;s diagram is expected to be erroneous. No data appear to be available in the literature concerning the Co-Ni-Mo system. The face-centered cubic (austenitic) solid solut,ions of iron, nickel, and cobalt, which are quite extensive in all three systems at 1200°C, are here designated as the a phase. The body-centered cubic (ferritic) solid solutions, based on iron, are designated in this report as the ? phase, in conformity with the nomenclature used previously.&apos; Experimental Procedure The alloys were prepared by vacuum induction melting in zirconia and alumina crucibles. The lot analyses for the metals used have been given.&apos; The number of alloys prepared was 46 for the Co-Ni-Mo system, 65 for the Co-Fe-Mo system, and 113 for the Ni-Fe-Mo system. The compositions of these alloys were selected with due regard to maximum usefulness in locating phase boundaries. The alloy specimens were annealed at 1200°C in an atmosphere of purified 92 pct helium and 8 pct hydrogen mixture. Alloys consisting almost entirely of the face-centered cubic austenitic a phase, or of the body-centered cubic ferritic c phase were double-forged with intermediate annealing. The double-forged specimens were then final annealed for 90 hr at 1200 °C and quenched in cold water. Alloys containing considerable amounts of any of the other phases could not be forged. Such specimens were annealed for 150 hr at 1200°C and quenched. Microscopic specimens of all alloys were prepared by mechanical polishing, in many cases followed by electrolytic polishing. Description of the polishing and etching procedures used and tabulation of the intended compositions of the alloys prepared are being published in two N.A.C.A. Technical Notes.7,8 , Many of the alloys were analyzed chemically and, in general, the results are in excellent agreement with the intended compositions. X-ray diffraction samples were prepared by filing or crushing homogenized alloy specimens and by reannealing the obtained powders in evacuated and sealed quartz tubes. After annealing for 30 min at 1200°C the tubes were quenched into cold water. X-ray diffraction patterns were made with unfiltered chromium radiation at 30 kv, using an asymmetrical focusing camera of high dispersion. X-ray diffraction and microscopic methods were used jointly to identify the phases present in each specimen. The amounts of the phases in each alloy were estimated microscopically. The phase boundaries were located by the disappearing phase method. The results were used to construct 1200°C isothermal sections for the three ternary phase diagrams. The accuracy of the location of the phase boundaries determined in this manner is estimated to approximately ±1 pct of each component. The portion of the three phase diagrams lying between the µ, P, and 6 phases on the one hand, and the molybdenum corner on the other, has not been investigated. Recently Metcalfe reported0 a high temperature allotropic form of cobalt on the basis of dilatometric results and of cooling curves. In the present work no attempt was made to search for the new phase in the cobalt corner of the Co-Fe-Mo and Co-Ni-Mo systems. No alloy was prepared with more than 80 pct Co; the alloys used were intended to locate the boundary of the a phase saturated with cL. The microstructures of the quenched a alloys near the cobalt COrner gave no suggestion of an in-suppressible transformation On quenching. The location of the boundaries of the a + ? two-phase fields in the Fe-Ni-Mo and Fe-CO-MO systems was determined entirely by the microscopic method. I. EXPERIMENTAL FLOTATION CONCENTRATION INTRODUCTION EARLY in 1914 it was decided to test, on a fairly large scale, the treatment by flotation of Anaconda slime and mill tailing. For this purpose a standard-type Minerals. Separation machine was installed at the Washoe Reduction Works during May and June, 1914. This was followed by the. installation of a full-size Callow pneumatic machine plant. Experiments were also made, on a smaller scale, with the Froment, the Towne, the Fields, and the Anaconda flotation machines. The last-named machine was developed at this plant. In addition to the tests made in the standard-type Minerals Separation machine some tests were made using a Minerals Separation machine of the sub-aeration type. During the series of experiments a large variety of oils was tested. Experiments were also conducted using both round-table feed and tailing to determine whether it would be better to displace the round tables by flotation for the treatment of the slime, or to supplement the round tables by flotation of the round-table tailing. A series of tests was also made on the treatment of the mill tailing by grinding followed by flotation to determine the relative merits of flotation and leaching for the treatment of this product. In addition, flotation tests were made on mixtures of mill tailing and slime. The round-table feed referred to above is the total slime from the mill. It contains about 35 per cent. colloidal solids and approximately 90 to 95 per cent. of the total solids will pass through 200 mesh (0.067 mm.). It assays from 2.3 to 2.6 per cent. Cu. The mill tailing referred to above is the total discard from the mill, exclusive of the slime. It is all finer than 2 mm. and about 90 to 95 per cent. will remain on 0.25 mm. It assays about 0.60 per cent. Cu. A brief summary of the experimental flotation results follows:

Two career employees of the US Dept, of the Interior, in a recent study, indicated that by the end of 1974, 73% of all public lands had been entirely or partially closed to exploration and development of essential resources for leasable minerals and 67% had been similarly restricted for locatable minerals.1 This has come about because of the lack of coordination within the executive branch and between the executive and legislative branches of the federal government and without regard for the cumulative, depressing effect on future domestic mineral production. Much of the withdrawn land is felt to have great potential for discovery of significant mineral deposits.
