Explosives are used in the entertainment industry in a wide variety of applications. Live performances such as automobile races, air shows and the like have incorporated the use of explosives into their programs. Even art work has been created employing explosive materials and techniques. The primary entertainment use of explosives, however, remains in motion pictures, television, theater and related fields where it comes under the auspices of special effects. Much of it falls roughly into the category of demolition, though the object being demolished may range from a cigarette in a person's mouth or clothing worn by actors to large objects such as automobiles, aircraft, or boats. This paper will attempt to provide an overview of the materials and methods by which these special effects are created as well as highlight the unique problems encountered in this field and their often equally unique solutions.

This paper, under the title of "The Genesis of Auriferous Lodes from a Chemical Point of View, Illustrated by Analyses of Samples Taken from the Chief Auriferous Area of New Zealand, Victoria and Queensland, by John R. Don, D.Sc., M.A., Lecturer on Geology in the University of Otago, N. Z.," was submitted by the author with the frank confession that its length, covering several hundred printed pages of the Transactions of the Institute, would preclude its acceptance for publication in full. But the great value of the original work which it records rendered its rejection on that ground highly undesirable ; and, after correspondence with Dr. Don, it was agreed that the Secretary should condense the paper, subject to the author's approval, omitting what was not essentially connected with the original work reported. In the discharge of this laborious and difficult duty, the Secretary's chief trouble has been his regret to cut out the acute criticisms and admirable theoretical and historical summaries of Dr. Don on the general subject of the science of ore-deposits. It should be added, that the original paper has been returned to the author, with full permission to publish it through any other medium (due mention being made of the first publication by the Institute of portions thereof), and a cordial expression of the hope that the treatise, as a whole, may be thus published, to the advantage of science. The Secretary begs to add, that many of the portions necessarily omitted from this condensed version would constitute, in his judgment, interesting and valuable separate contributions. In attempting to condense this paper, it was necessary at the outset to cut out the tint three chapters, of which the following brief outline is therefore given. Chapter I., introductory in character, indicates the importance of chemical analysis in the investigation of the genesis of ore-deposits, emphasizing the value of Prof. Posepny's Institute paper, and especially of the discussion which it aroused, and stating in general terms the theories of "lateral secretion" and "ascension." Chapter 11. describes the scope of the investigation undertaken by the author, the chief purpose of which was to determine which of the above-named theories was favored by the evidence obtained. This evidence consists chiefly (though not wholly) of analyses of the country-rock taken at various distances from the auriferous "reefs," (a) on deep mine-levels; (b) in the surface or "vadose" region : and also (c) of underlying, neighboring or connected crystallines (granite, gneiss, etc.). In addition to these investigations, there is a separate inquiry into the question of the deposition of gold in marine basins, suggested by the fact that most of the gold in the lodes of Australasia occurs in stratified deposits. Chapter 111. discusses the principles and methods followed by the author in the examination of country-rock for the purpose described. The temperatwe and grain size dependence of the mechanical avoperties of ordered and disordered Fe-49 pct Co-2 Pct V were investigated. The yield and flow stresses obeyed the Hall-Petch relationship u = ai + kd-&apos;I2. Ohdering reduced the intercept stress cjj and raised the Petch slope, k, at all temperatures. Ordering also increased the temperatwe dependence of k. The ductile to brittle transition temperature increased with order and grair~ size. Cleavage fracture was nucleation limited and the fracture stress did not zlary linearly with d-&apos;". A quantitative test of the Cottrell-Petch fracture theory (and recent modifications which consider the influence of slip mode), demonstvated that this theory is not applicable to FeCo-V. COTTRELL&apos; and etch&apos; independently suggested that a criterion for cleavage failure at the yield point, a,, based on dislocation pileups at a grain boundary or other obstacle to dislocat.ion motion, is: aYYkd&apos;I2 1 opy [ll or, equivalently, aikz,d112 +k:)bpy [2] where a, and ky are the Hall-Petch intercept and slope, respectively, 2d is the grain diameter, P is a geometric factor dependent on the macroscopic ratio between shear and tensile stress, p is the shear modulus, and y is the true elastic surface energy. When the product of quantities on the left side of the equation is equal to or exceeds that on the right, cracks should be able to nucleate and propagate at the yield stress, as shown schematically in Fig. 1. Therefore a high intercept stress, high Petch slope, or coarse grain size favors brittleness. petch3 associated the existence of a ductile to brittle transition in ferrous alloys with the temperature dependence of ai. One of the earliest modifications of the Cottrell-Petch theory was presented by ~rmstrong,~ who derived an expression for transition temperature in terms of several measurable flow and fracture parameters. The latter paper was able to rationalize situations in which the transition temperature increases with decl-easing grain size, as in the case of molybdenum,&apos; and also suggested that Ppy should be a function of grain size as well as temperature. More recently Johnston et a1.6 and Smith and worthington7 have suggested that the temperature or composition dependence ol&apos; ky must also be taken into account if there is any cha.nge in deformation mode, as from wavy to planar slip, or wavy slip to twinning, with change in temperature or solute content. The purpose of the present investigation was to critically test the modified677 Cottrell-Petch theory of fracture in the superlattice alloy Fe-49 pct Co-2 pct V, by studying the grain size dependence of the yield and fracture stresses over a range of temperatures, in conjunction with an investigation of slip mode and fracture behavior. Previous work has shown that long range order results in a sharp decrease in flow stress, a small increase in work hardening rate and a drastic upward shift in the ductile-brittle transition temperature of F~CO-V.~&apos;~ The only comprehensive study of slip character in this alloy has been reported in a preliminary account of the present investigation.10 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental work was carried out on material produced from a 10 lb vacuum melted ingot, of composition 49.32 wt pct Co, 2.09 wt pct V, balance Fe. 30-mil thick sheet samples with a 1; in. gage section were machined from cold rolled stock. The degree of cold work ranged from 85 pct for the finest grained samples to 5 pct for the coarsest grain size. Details of ingot fabrication are reported elsewhere." Equi-axed grain sizes in the range 12.7 to 75.4 p were obtained by annealing for varying times at 850°C. (Re-crystallization annealing time, rather than temperature , was varied to control grain size to insure that samples of all grain sizes contained equivalent quenched-in vacancy and interstitial concentrations.) Grain sizes were measured by the line intercept method on several specimens of each grain size. Following recrystallization, all samples were disordered by quenching into iced brine.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree Engineering refers to the application of mathematics and other sciences to logically develop solutions to problems. However, in opencast mining, due to the randomness of operations, the use of mathematics is often neglected. Instead, practices that have proven successful elsewhere tend to apply. At the other end of the scale, mathematical models have been developed to identify and quantify all the operational parameters involved in the loading and haulage of ore. These are then used to optimize the operation. Optimization in this context, refers to the reduction of cost through effective utilization of the available time and resources. Considering these mathematical models, the loading and transport system at SMC (Catoca Mining Society) will be assessed with a view to its optimization. The discussion will be introduced by considering the mine background and other general information, which will highlight the main operational variables.

Supercritical water (sew) Is being tested for commercial use 1n several organic extraction systems but little work has been done on the extraction of metals from minerals. This lack of information prompted Bureau of Hines (BOM) research into the sew treatment of minerals. As a result, this research project is intended to serve mainly as a starting point for further experimentation. A simple flow-through reactor was built out of high pressure tubing and used to treat minerals with SCU at 400? C and 3500 to 7000 psi. The research produced four main conclusions: (1) carbonates of copper, iron, and lead convert to oxides; (2) most iron minerals showed alteration to oxides with some iron dissolution; (3) valuable trace elements including nickel, chromium, and others leached to some extent from sea minerals along with some calcium, iron, silicon, and sulfur; and (4) treatment of sulfides extracted elemental sulfur and resulted in several alteration reactions, though with the exception of cinnabar and the iron bearing minerals, the metals in sulfides were mainly insoluble. Surface alterations on many of the minerals show significant changes have occurred in the minerals even when only minor extractions were detected. These surface effects may be very important when used in conjunction with flotation processes since the sew treatment may selectively enhance or suppress a mineral&apos;s floatability.

Comprehensive utilization of the copper associated with the complex lead and zinc sulphide ore is a recognized and difficult technical issue in ore dressing field. Qi Baoshan lead-zinc mine is a typical complex copper-lead-zinc polymetallic ore deposit and difficult to process. The application of the. traditional process is not able to make the substantive progress. According to its mineralogical characteristics, the association of copper minerals with lead minerals is very close, and their particle sizes are very fine, and the copper and lead minerals are partially oxidized. Based on the laboratory tests and comparison between different process flowsheets, preferential flotation of copper minerals, being suitable for this ore, was chosen to recover copper. The separation of copper from lead applies the following technology: regrinding middlings with cyclones to classify, which improves copper lead mineral liberation, and increases copper and lead recovery; using new high-efficient collector with good selectivity, which is able to float copper minerals; and non-toxic combined depressant which depresses lead minerals. The above technical innovation, optimizing the process flowsheet, overcoming the complex traditional process flow with high production cost, obtained good technical and economic indicator. The difficult technical problem of copper lead separation was solved smoothly. After successful performance of the bench-scale experiment, commercial-scale test was carried out. In industrial trial, a copper concentrate containing Cu18.60 %, Pb7.40 % and Zn2.50 % was obtained with copper recovery of 58.49%, lead concentrate quality improved largely. The process opened up an unique path for the comprehensive recovery of Cu from similar lead and zinc non-ferrous metals mineral to comprehensively recover copper.

"Purification of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) by the plasma-arc zone melting method (PZM) has been examined. The process consisted in the horizontal displacement of a molten zone heated by Ar- and 10%H2+Ar- plasma-arc under atmospheric pressure. This technique, especially using hydrogen plasma-arc, promoted the segregation of impurities from the head to the tail of the bar and the vaporization of impurities of higher vapor pressures. Metallic impurities such as Fe, Ti, Cr, Mn,. Cu, Al and Ca were reduced to less than 1 mass ppm at the head side of the Si bar. Non-metallic impurities such as boron, phosphorous, carbon and oxygen were also reduced by the zoning effect and, furthermore, by activated hydrogen atoms dissociated in the high temperature plasma-arc according to the following reaction: Q (in liq.Si) + 2H = H20. Plasma-arc zone melting with hydrogen plasma has been recognized to become an effective purification technique of MG-Si for the production of a low cost solar grade Si (SOG-Si).IntroductionDemand of high-purity Si for solar grade silicon (SOG-Si) is supposed to be further growing in the near future. The purity of SOG-Si required for the photovoltaic cell is more than six nines. An expensive semiconductor grade silicon (SEG-Si) with the purity of around eleven nines has been used to satisfy the demand. Development of techniques and processes for the production of a low cost SOG-Si is therefore necessary [l]. Although many purification techniques, such as directional solidification, plasmaarc melting and electron beam melting [1-6], and processes, such as carbothermic reduction of high purity silica [7], have been examined and proposed for this purpose, a more efficient and practical purification technique is still required.In the present work, the purification of MG-Si has been investigated using a plasma-arc zone melting (PZM) technique developed by the authors. Plasma-arc melting, which is well· known as a useful melting method for various metals and alloys, has been recognized to be efficient for refining and degassing several metals if hydrogen is added to the plasma generating gas, resulting in the so-called hydrogen plasma-arc. For example, deoxidation of Fe, Co and Ta [8,9], decarburization of Fe [9] and removal of metallic impurities from Zr, Ta and Fe [10-12] have been reported. This excellent refining effect is considered to be caused by dissociated and activated hydrogen atoms formed in the high temperature plasma-arc."

INTRODUCTION Grinding mills have been used in the minerals processing industry for over 100 years. Their dimensions have grown continuously during this time. Besides increasing throughput rates of grinding plants due to the depletion of high grade ores, the lower specific in- vestment costs, as well as reduced operating and maintenance requirements are major reasons for this trend. When selecting new plant equipment one must consider that design principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today&apos;s equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger size of equipment. Modern calculation methods as for instance the Finite Element method already contribute considerably to the safe design of the huge equipment being built today and are a standard tool of the design engineers. More recently, modern computer programs are also being used in order to size the equipment to meet the process requirements. Today, two design principles are on the market - one which supports the weight of such a unit on trunnion bearings through cast conical endwalls and one which is supported through slipper pad bearings arranged at the circumference of the mill shell (Fig.1). The reason for the development of this alternative grinding mill design can be found in the past. During the sixties and seventies the growing sizes of ball mills with high LID ratios caused many mill failures due to cracked endwalls. The accuracy of the calculation methods as well as the quality standards for castings were not developed to a degree required for such kind of heavy equipment. One way to overcome these problems was the increase of the manufacturing quality standards as well as the introduction of the finite element method based on the analysis of the experience available. The biggest grinding mills being built today are large size SAG mills with cast conical endwalls and trunnion bearings (Fig.2). This is due to the fact that mill manufacturers who had come from the conventional ball mill design adopted these principles as well to their SAG mills. These grinding mills perform well without special concern to the operators. Other manufacturers overcame the problems as mentioned above by eliminating completely the heavy castings and trunnion bearings and the problems associated to it (Fig.1). This design was originally applied to ball mills for the mining and other industries. Due to the success of these shell supported ball mills, this design principle was also applied to SAG mills(Fig.3). Despite of the fact that the majority of today&apos;s grinding mills are built to the conventional design it is also interesting to have a look at this alternative. Principles which have proven their reliability on sizes of today&apos;s equipment do not automatically warrant a successful operation on the ever larger equipment if bigger mill sizes are realized only based on the pantograph principle. With growing grinding mill sizes, the mass and volume flows through the equipment increases rapidly. Thus it is very important not only to concentrate on the safe design of the structural components of the equipment but as well on the process requirements. The influence of the design on important process parameters of dry and wet grinding plants are discussed thereafter. It shall be shown how modern computer programs can assist in the optimization of the design of components in order to fulfil the operational requirements of such large size equipment. PROCESS REQUIREMENTS OF LARGE SIZE GRINDING MILLS Dry Grinding Mills The world&apos;s biggest ball mill is a dry grinding ball mill having a diameter of 6.2m and an overall length of 25,5m with a drive power of 11,200 KW or 15,000HP. This grinding mill dries and grinds gold ore at a rate of 500 tons per hour at a moisture content of up to 9,5%. As shown in Fig.4 this mill was built as a shell supported unit. In fact only this design principle allowed to meet the process requirement. This mill could hardly be built with cast conical endwalls due to the constraints of the trunnion bearings limiting the mill inlet. The following case shows how modern computer programs can help to meet the design criteria of the air system of large size dry grinding plants. The only economically important mineral currently produced in Bangladesh was natural gas. Bangladesh was not a world? ranked producer of any mineral commodity, but the possibility of producing and exporting commercial amounts of liquefied natural gas (LNG) was being examined. Proved reserves of natural gas were sufficient to supply most of the country&apos;s industrial and domestic heating and electric needs and still support an export-oriented LNG plant. Other mineral production was of virtually no significance to the economy, although there were a few prospects for nonmetallic mineral development. Bangladesh continued to make economic progress during 1978 and into early 1979. Gross domestic product (GDP) at current prices rose from $6.6 billion in 1976-772 to $8.2 billion in 1977?78 and $9.3 billion in 1978.79.2 In fiscal 1979, the economic conditions were favorable until a severe drought hit most of the country. It W88 reported that conditions were the worst in 40 years, and 88 of July 1979, substantial crop losses were predicted. The agricultural sector accounts for over 53% of the GDP and about 75% of all employment. The poor weather will cause economic problems in the form of slower growth, larger trade deficits, and a higher rate of inflation. The 1978.79 statistics showed that real GDP increased just 4%.

The objective of the paper is to develop a material balance calculation procedure for a production unit involving two plants separated by a pipeline. The case study is taken from the oil sands industry. The raw sands are first mixed with water in a conditioning plant, then transported through a pipeline to an oil extraction plant. The combination of pipeline dimensions and nominal throughput creates a significant variable time lag between the two plants. As usual, mass balance calculations required for the evaluation of plant performance indicators, such as bitumen recovery, are inaccurate due to measurement errors. In addition, in the present case study, the time lag of the pipe creates an additional source of uncertainty, which may lead to misinterpretations and wrong decisions. Raw data are usually reconciled through steady-state mass balancing, to correct for measurement errors. However, because of the significant pipeline dynamic lag, standard steady-state daily mass balance may fail at giving an appropriate picture of the operations. The proposed solution to the data reconciliation problem includes the use of a pipeline plug-flow model in the mass balance calculation. To fulfil the industrial constraint that current data reconciliation must not modify past reconciled values, while still satisfying dynamic constraints, a daily one-step method, i.e. a unitary filter-ing horizon, is recommended. The method is illustrated with simulation data, and the results com-pared to those of standard data reconciliation methods.

Several empirical and semi-empirical laws of comminution, which describe the relationships between the cumulative grinding energy input and the degree of size reduction of brittle solids, have been rationally derived in the time-domain in a unified manner, starting with an integro-differential equation of grinding kinetics. The analysis leads to and provides explicit interrelationships between the energy-size reduction laws associated with Kick, Rittinger, Holmes, Bond, Charles and others, and gives useful estimates of their relative merits and validity. It is shown that Holmes' expression is, in fact, a solution to the grinding equation; consequently, this classical law is compatible with the modern theory of comminution based on population balance on particulate species

The effect of oxygen content in the anode metal on titanium electrorefining characteristics was studied. Increasing quantities of oxygen in the anode resulted in increased anode scale formation, decreased anode and cathode current efficiencies, lower titanium recovery efficiencies, and higher oxygen content of the cathode products. The titanium electrorefining process performed best when the anodes did not contain more than 0.5 percent oxygen, although anode dissolution was recorded for alloys containing up to 25 percent oxygen. Back emf affords a useful index of an alloy to electrorefining.

AMERICAN investment in foreign mining interests today faces its greatest task. U. S. dollars must make possible the. steady procurement of the minerals our defense effort consumes in huge quantities. The two most vital factors involved in foreign procurement are time and the continued good will of the nations from which minerals are purchased. The Point IV program was formulated to care for the second item, but it has failed to do the job. Its lack of success has not been from intent or from basic failure in formula. Foreign Investment, Four Eras Foreign mineral development, in so far as participation by private capital from the United States is concerned, may be divided into four main chronological categories: First: The period prior to the first World War when people, capital and products moved with relative freedom across international boundaries, and London was the recognized mining seat of the world. By the end of 1919 the United States direct investments abroad amounted to $3.9 billion of which some $900 million were in mining and smelting and $600 million in petroleum. Investment climate throughout most of the world was excellent. Second: The period between the end of World War I, when the international economy had been shaken from its foundations, and the beginning of the great depression of the 1930&apos;s, which still further disrupted the world economy. By that time the world mining center had moved across the sea and the United States direct investments abroad had increased to $7.7 billion of which mining and smelting accounted for $1.2 billion and petroleum for $1.1 billion. Investment climate was good in most parts of the world. Third: The period of the depression of the 1930&apos;s and the beginning of World War II during which foreign trade was still further disorganized and the international economy collapsed. Nazi barter agreements were initiated in many parts of the world, and Soviet propaganda commenced to make its, influence felt in many countries. During this period United States direct investments abroad decreased to $7.3 billion. Mining and smelting investments during the same period decreased some $200 million, though direct investments in foreign petroleum areas increased an equal amount. Investment climate became less and less hospitable in all parts of the world affected by economic nationalism. Fourth: The period since the beginning of World War II during which total direct investments abroad increased from $7.3 to $13.7 billion. Of this sum, at the beginning of 1950 investment in foreign mining and smelting is reported to have been $1.2 billion-back to where it was in 1929, and in petroleum to have reached $3.7 billion. Investment climate remained favorable in the countries respecting contractual obligations and fair in their treatment of invested capital. [ ] As noted above, the relative freedom of passage across international boundaries by people, capital and products ended with World War I and the situation remains unchanged in a greater part of the world. While this same war upset international economy, the depression of the 1930&apos;s caused the collapse of world trade, and exports from all countries fell to an alarmingly low figure. In order to meet the stringent market requirements for high purity cobalt, ZCCM commissioned the VIR plant in December 1982. The plant comprises a 4.1 tonne/heat vacuum induction furnace with a rated annual capacity of 2,500 MT of barstock. In the VIR furnace, molten cobalt is held under vacuum at 1600°C resulting in the removal of more volatile impurity elements by distillation. Operations todate have demonstrated that Pb, Zn and Cd have good distillation rates in excess of 95%, leading to cobalt containing 1 ppm or less of the above elements. Removal of other impurities such as Se, Bi is about 65% with the finished product still assaying around 1 ppm of each of these elements. Vacuum refining of cobalt offers an economic route for producing higher grades of cobalt from the type of concentrates and treatment processes available within ZCCM. The consistency of VIR cobalt quality has been confirmed by ZCCM and some of its alloy customers.

Published correlations for the principal aspects of hydraulic fracturing were combined into a digital computer program to facilitate the study of interrelated variables. The computer program includes individual relationships for fracture width during pumping, fracture area generated, propping agent embedment, flow capacities of propped fractures and transport of propping agents in horizontal fractures. The effects of more than 20 treatment and formation parameters on the predicted results of hydraulic fracturing treatments were studied. The effects of these parameters were determined for (I) fracture width during injection, (2) fracture width after the overburden comes to rest on the propping agents, assumed not to be crushed, (3) generated and propped fracture area, (4) location and concentration of propping agents in the fracture when injection ceases, (5) flow capacities of the various propped sections of the fracture and (6) expected increase in the well productivity. The effects of propping agent, formation and fracturing fluid parameters on well productivity are discussed. The parameters that were found to have the most pronounced effects on hydraulic fracturing treat~nents are injection rate, treatment volume, fracturing fluid coefficient, size and amount of propping agent, spearhead volume, well drainage radius and formation capacity. INTRODUCTION Many correlations have been published for predicting effects of various parameters that are considered in the design of hydraulic fracturing treatments. The Carter equation&apos; can be used to predict generated fracture radius as a function of fracture width, fracturing fluid leakoff and other parameters. Fracture width can be determined by use of the Perkins and Kern correlation&apos; in which the fracture width is related to the fracture radius, fluid injection rate and certain formation and fracturing fluid parameters. Wahl and Lowe et aL4 have reported methods of predicting the location of propping agents in fractures when pumping ceases. The former study is applicable to the case where the ratio of propping agent diameter to fracture width is less than 0.1. The latter is applicable when this ratio is greater than 0.1. These studies showed that the propping agent placement in horizontal-radial fractures depends principally on how the individual particles are transported in the fracture by the carrying fluid. Particle transport in fractures is determined by local fluid velocity in the fracture, fluid and particle properties, and the size of the particle relative to the fracture width. The distribution of propping agents, effective overburden pressure and formation rock strength control the propped fracture width6 by controlling the extent to which the propping agent particles embed into the fracture faces. From the distribution of propping agents and the propped fracture width, fracture flow capacities can be calculated or the various regions of the fracture. The flow capacities and the radial extent of these regions can be combined with reservoir information to predict the productivity increases for fractured wells. In all these studies, the effects of certain treatment and/ or reservoir parameters on one facet of fracturing can be predicted only if other facets which the parameters affect are fixed. For instance, fracture width and radius are interrelated; that is, to calculate the value of one, the value of the other must be known. Also, some parameters influence more than one aspect of fracturing. For example, prop-pant transport is a function of both fracture width and fluid viscosity. but fracture width is itself a function of fluid viscosity. Since these calculations are complex and the parameters interrelated, it is not possible to write an equation with which the over-all effects of treatment parameters can be solved explicitly. For these reasons, the correlations for determining the effects of the parameters which are most significant in hydraulic fracturing treatments have been incorporated into a digital computer program. COMPUTER PROGRAM The program, which was written for an IBM 7094 computer, can be used to predict results of most of the combinations and values for the treatment parameters that are ordinarily considered for fracturing treatments. A spearhead of fracturing fluid and a propping agent-carrying fluid with different fluid properties can be taken into account. Also, the total volumes and relative amounts of the spearhead and carrying fluids can be varied. Two different propping agents (as used in tail-in operations) and a wide range of formation properties and injection rates are considered. The computer program (Fig. 12) consists of several sets of calculations. First, the final flooded fracture radius and average fracture width at the cessation of pumping are calculated. This is done by simultaneous solution of the Perkins and Kern fracture width equation and the Carter equation for flooded fracture radius (equations used in the computer program appear in the Appendix). The next step is to determine local fluid velocity in the fracture as a function of time and radius. BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, or BMA, is AustraliaÆs largest coal miner and exporter, and is currently responsible for around a quarter of AustraliaÆs total annual coal exports. BMA and its predecessors have been part of the Queensland mining scene for around 40 years, developing world-class mines, a port, overseas markets, and an international reputation for quality and reliability. From its production base in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin, BMA produces a broad suite of coals which are supplied to 73 customers in 24 countries. BMA was formed in June 2001 as a partnership between BHP Billiton and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd, under which the two companies share equal ownership and management of eight Central Queensland coal mines û Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Gregory, Crinum and Blackwater û and the Hay Point coal export terminal near Mackay. This case study focuses on Peak Downs Mine, which was the second largest open cut mining operation to be developed in the northern Bowen Basin for the original CQCA Joint Venture. The first coal was mined in April 1972 and today, Peak Downs has a production capacity of over nine million tonnes of coking coal per annum. The mine is located 30 km south of Moranbah and 195 km south west of the Hay Point port facilities. Coal is mined by open cut mining methods using six draglines and two truck/shovel stripping fleets for overburden removal. Coal seams are mined using excavators and front-end loaders and 210 tonne capacity coal haulers.
