A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the US Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Geotechnical mapping was performed in 2010 in large excavations of the Davis Campus at the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine. LIDAR mapping included laser scanning using a red light laser scanner and 288 Mpixels 360° still camera. The resulting vector map with the photographs digitally draped over the model, was used to create an accurate, virtual model of the excavations. For model verification, the laser scanning was accompanied by surveying and manual mapping of the geology and rock structure. The immediate use of the model was to perform structural analysis and interpretation of geology needed for the design of the DUSEL?s super large excavations. The second round of scanning, after the application of shotcrete to the excavations walls, will be used as a technical blueprint to assess the effectiveness of shotcrete application.

O controle do processamento térmico por programas computacionais tornou-se uma prática cada vez mais frequente no meio industrial. Utilizando ferramentas como o controlador PID (Proporcional-Intergral-Derivativo), o sistema SCADA (Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition) e um protocolo de comunicação industrial, é possível configurar os parâmetros de entrada, acompanhar o desenvolvimento do processo, visualizar seus valores em cada instante do ciclo e valores finais (de saída), obter gráficos do processo em tempo real, comparando valores, aumentando a confiabilidade do processo, e por tanto, do produto final. Foi desenvolvido um sistema livre que, além de auxiliar na configuração dos parâmetros, exerce funções de monitoramento, de controle e de registro dos dados nos processos de tratamento térmico. Esse sistema poderá ser empregado em fornos na indústria e nos laboratórios de pesquisa.

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. The Caribou sulfide deposit near Bathurst, New Brunswick (Figure 1) is illustrative of one variety of strata-bound sulfide deposits. It consists of numerous near-vertical sulfide lenses which are concordant to the foliation and lithologic layering of low-grade metamorphic host rocks. Pyrite is the chief mineral in these lenses, but appreciable quantities of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and galena are also present. Rocks in the Caribou mine area belong to the Tetagouche Group of Ordovician age. They consist chiefly of (1) quartz-sericite and quartz- sericite- feldspar schists, (2) greenschists, and (3) slate and phyllite. The trends of these steeply dipping rocks define the trace of a tight, steeply plunging fold structure, the Caribou fold (Figure 2). This fold plunges approximately 750 to the north-northwest; its axial plane strikes N.20°E. and dips steeply westward. Sulfide lenses of the Caribou deposit are associated spatially with the Caribou fold. The deposit is located in the fold along the contact between quartz-sericite and quartz-sericite-feldspar schists on the hanging wall and quartz-chlorite-sericite phyllites and graphitic schist on the footwall (Figure 3). Genesis of the Caribou deposit is ambiguous because its strata-bound form suggests syngenetic sulfide deposition, whereas its location within a fold suggests structurally controlled epigenetic mineralization. Acceptability of a particular genetic model rests on establishing the time of mineralization relative to deposition, deformation, and metamorphism of the associated rocks. To establish the timing for Caribou mineralization, the deformational histories of rock and sulfide, respectively, were compared. Epigenetic and syngenetic models can be tested against this interpreted structural history of the Caribou deposit.

"Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. This paper reports on research examining disclosures from mining companies regarding their water usage in the Macquarie and Lachlan catchment areas, both parts of the Murray-Darling Basin in New South Wales, Australia. The objective of the research was to assess whether this disclosure is sufficient to allow communities to determine whether mining companies are complying with mining conditions of consent and abiding by the requirements of their water licencing agreements. These requirements are then compared to the water reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Water Accounting Framework for the Minerals Industry (WAFMI). Communities are concerned about whether the mining industry?s use of water will have impacts on their livelihoods and lifestyle and thus require information concerning the quantity of water that will be extracted, how much water will be left for other stakeholders and whether the mining will affect water quality. This is an archival study. It has involved examining relevant publically available information released by mining companies and government regulators and determining if this is sufficient to meet the needs of the local communities. Additionally, it has involved looking at information indirectly provided by mining companies, via the use of intermediaries. Further, information availability concerning basic water accounting and regulatory breeches and whether such information is available at the mine site level has been considered. It is found that while NSW legislation places very little reporting requirements on mining companies, the development consent conditions for new projects and extensions to existing projects are quite significant and should be sufficient to meet the needs of local catchment residents though such information is not always easily accessible for the layperson.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

The objective of metrology in mineral exploration is to derive unbiased confidence limits for masses of metals contained in reserves and resources. Sets of test results for gold and silver determined in pairs of interleaved bulk samples give unbiased confidence limits for the central value of each metal. The same sets of test results show how to verify spatial dependence by applying Fisher?s F-test to the variance of a set and the first variance term of the ordered set. A significant degree of spatial dependence gives a higher degree of precision for the central values of gold and silver. Plotting variance terms of an ordered set against the variance of the set and its lower limits of asymmetric 99% and 95% confidence ranges gives a sampling variogram. Sampling variograms put in plain view where spatial dependence in sampling units or sample spaces dissipates into randomness. The application of statistical methods to test results for sets of ordered core samples within boreholes, and for sets of ordered ore volumes within profiles, plays an important role in defining reserves and resources.

The surface tension of lead-tellurium alloys (in the range 0 to 6.70 at. pct Te) ad lead-arsenic alloys (in the range 0 to 10.53 at. pct As) has been examined by the maximum bubble pressure method. The surface tension of high purity lead can be expressed over a range of temperatures (M.P. to 750°C) by the relationship = 512 — 0.133t. Arsenic and lellurium were both found to be surface active in lead. The surface excess concentration at 700°C was .found to be constant at 0.74 x 10-10 moles per sq cm for tellurium. The surface excess of arsenic at 700°C varied between 0.26 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 0.16 at. pct to 1.5 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 8.3 at. pet. The surface tension of lead has been investigated sporadically over the last 90 years. The first recorded study was made by Quincke1 who used a rather crude application of the drop-weight method. Hogness2 obtained the first reliable value for the surface tension of lead by measuring the pressure necessary to force the liquid metal from the end of a small capillary of known radius. Hogness gives the empirical formula: ?(surface tension)= 444 - 0.077 (l-327) which describes the relationship between surface tension and temperature ("C); This work was followed by that of Bircumshaw3 who applied the two-capillar maximum bubble pressure method of Sugden.4 The values published by Bircumshaw are in good agreement with those found by Hogness. Matuyama5 examined the surface tension of lead by the drop weight method. However, the values found are somewhat higher than those previously reported. More recent investigations by Greenaway6 and by Melford and oar' have resulted in data which are not in close agreement, but which are well within the expected range at most temperature levels. The study of the surface tension of lead alloys began with Drath and sauerwald8 who examined the lead-bismuth system. They found that the surface tension values of the alloys in this system deviated only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. Matuyarna5 examined the lead-antimony system. Bircumshaw the lead-tin, and the lead-indium system was studied by Hoar and Me1ford.10 The results of these investi- gations are summarized in Fig. 1. It may be seen that the data vary only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. As none of the metals studied and reported in the literature has a very interesting effect on the surface tension of lead,*the next logical step might be to examine the effect of metals of low solubility or nonmetals having some liquid solubility. Baes, and Kellogg11 have pointed out that the elements most likely to be surface active in liquid metals are ones of limited solubility in the liquid state and possessing weak intermolecular bonding forces in the solid state. Therefore, Group V, VI and VII nonmetals are most likely to be surface active. It was decided to examine the effect of a borderline metal, arsenic, and a nonmetal tellurium. Arsenic forms a eutectic with lead having a melting point of 290°C and a composition of 6.9 at. pct As.13 Pure arsenic sublimes when heated above 610°C. Even though alloying with lead lowers the vapor pressure, fumes containing arsenic are evolved at a very noticeable rate when lead-arsenic alloys are heated above 650°C. Tellurium raises the liquidus temperature of lead sharply to 904°C,14 the melting point of PbTe (lead-telluride). The solid solubility of tellurium in lead was determined by Greenwood and worner15 to be 0.0007 at. pct at room temperature. Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Although the geotechnical block model proved difficult and complex to construct, the resultant product has seen successful integration of geological and geotechnical data into mine planning providing higher resolution of critical parameters for local mining areas.CITATION:Clark, J M, Passmore, M and Poznik, N, 2017. The southeastern region of the United States is becoming more important as a petroleum-producing area, and it is receiving increasing attention from oil operators. In 1948 total production of crude oil from six southeastern States - Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia - was 55,244,000 barrels, which represents 2.7 percent of the Nation's output during that year. Kentucky and Tennessee have produced crude oil since the early days of the industry, but the remaining four States have had production only few years. Data on annual production of crude petroleum in the six States are given in table 1.

The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

A study has been made of the material balance-fluid flow method of estimating reserves and degree of water drive from pressure and production history data. By considering the effect of random pressure errors it is shown that in a particular example a standard deviation of three and one-half pounds in each of ten pressure survey? permits the determination of the reserves with a standard deviation of 8 per cent and the water drive with a standard deviation of 15 per cent, assuming that certain basic geologic data are correct. It is believed that this method of estimating reserves and water drive is useful and reliable in a number of cases. The method is particularly valuable when reservoir pressure data are accurate within a very few pounds, but may also be applied with less accurate pressure data if a relatively large reservoir pressure decline occurs early in the life of the field, as for example in an under-saturated oil field. INTRODUCTION A knowledge of the magnitude of reserves and degree of water drive present in any newly discovered petroleum reservoir is necessary to early application of proper production practices. A number of investigators have contributed to methods of relating reserves, degree of water drive, and production and pressure history. 1-8 Three types of problems of increasing complexity may be mentioned. If a reservoir is known to have no water drive. and if the ratio of the volume of the reservoir occupied by gas to the volume of the reservoir occupied by oil (which ratio permits fixing the overall compressibility of the reservoir) is known, then only one further extensive reservoir property remains to be determined, namely the magnitude of the reserves. A straightforward application of material balance considerations will permit this determination. The problem becomes very much more difficult if we wish to determine not only the magnitude of the reserves but also the magnitude of water drive, if any, which is present. In principle, a combination of material balance and fluid flow considerations will permit this evaluation. Finally, if neither the magnitude of reserves, the degree of water drive, nor the ratio of oil to gas present in the reservoir is known and it is desired to determine all three of these variables, the problem could in principle be solved by a fluid flow-material balance analysis which determines the overall compressibility of the reservoir at various points in its history. The change in compressibility with pressure would provide a means of determining the ratio of gas to liquid present, since the compressibilities of gas and liquid vary differently with pressure variation. However, in practice this problem is probably so difficult as to defy solution in terms of basic data precision apt to be available.' It is the purpose of this discussion to illustrate the second case, which involves the determination of two unknown variables, single phase reserves and degree of water drive, from pressure and production history and fluid property data, and to study the precision with which these unknowns can be determined in this manner in a particular case. Although an electric analyzer developed by Bruce as used in making the calculations to be described, numerical methods necessary in carrying out the process have been devised and have been applied for this purpose. Schilthuis,' for example, developed a comprehensive equation for the material balance in a reservoir. He combined this with a simplified water drive equation, assuming that the ratio of free gas to oil was fixed by geological data and that a period of constant pressure operation at constant rate of production was available to determine the constant for his water drive equation. On this basis he was able to compute the reserves and predict the future pressure history of the reservoir. Hurst developed a generalized equation permitting the calculation of the water drive by unsteady state expansion from a finite aquifer. He showed in a specific case how the water influx calculated by his equation, using basic geologic and reservoir data to fix the constants, matched the water influx required by material balance considerations. Old3 illustrated the simultaneous use of Schilthuis' material balance equation and Hurst's fluid flow equation for the determination of the magnitude of reserves and a water drive parameter from pressure and production history. He used this method to calculate the future pressure history of the reservoir under assumed operating conditions. As a basis for determining reserves, Old assumed a value for his water drive parameter and calculated a set of values for the reserves, using the initial reservoir pressure and each successive measured pressure. The sum of the absolute values of the deviations of the resulting reserve numbers from their mean value was taken as a criterion of the closeness of fit to the experimental data possible with the water drive parameter assumed. New values of the water drive parameter were then assumed and new sets of the reserves calculated until a set of reserves numbers having a minimum deviation from the average was established. "Leaching solution prepared from spent battery materials contains large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Ni, Co, Mn and Fe. Therefore, recovery of valuable metals from acidic polymetallic aqueous solutions is of great importance for every plant. In this work, a method is introduced of recovery of Ni, Co and Mn from polymetallic solution prepared by leaching spent battery material. The basic concept includes copper was removed through replacement by iron powder followed by iron precipitation in goethite method. The experimental results show that Cu can be removed 99% at least through replacement by Fe powder, and the removal of Fe can achieve 99% by goethite method. At the same time, the loss of Ni, Co and Mn are about 2%, 3 % and 2%, respectively. The process of differential removal of metals can be selected as the treatment alternative that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs. The purified solution which only contains Ni, Co and Mn can be used to prepare NixCoyMnz ternary system precursor.1 IntroductionNickel and Cobalt are very important metals which are applied in many fields, such as energy material and support material for some new material field. The world demands for such metals is progressively increasing, while raw resources are being depleted and with the constraints raised by the Law and related legislation assigned to protect the environment from hazardous wastes in the world. Nowadays study on reutilization of waste materials has great significance for achieving secondary resources recycling and preventing environmental pollution. There are many hydrometallurgy methods applied for dealing with these wastes, while they usually contain large quantities of valuable metals, such as Cu, Co, Mn and Ni, as well as impurities, such as Fe, Zn, and etc. Therefore, proper treatment of these leaching solutions prior to their discharge is of great importance, so that the contained valuable metals can be recovered.Separation and extraction of metals from leaching solution can use some methods through solvent extraction[l,2], ion exchange[3,4], precipitation with sulfide[ 5] or alkali[ 6] and electrolytic recovery[?]. Among the appropriate treatment alternatives, replacement and differential precipitation is the most attractive treatment that combines simplicity, efficiency and reliability with low capital and maintenance costs."

Mining dilution is one of the most important factors affecting the economy of mining projects. Ore losses and dilution are present at all stages of mining and while several models can investigate the influence of dilution it is its quantification that poses the most serious challenge (Pakalnis et al., 1995). This paper introduces a methodology to quantify dilution factor in open pit mines. The proposed approach makes use of general mining software available in most mining companies. Therefore it is amenable to most mining operations and provides a readily available tool for understanding mining dilution for operators and consultants. To illustrate the methodology the author uses an example from a hypothetical mine. Dilution increases the operating costs in the mill by increasing the tonnage of material to be milled. In addition to its direct impact on short term income of a mine, dilution causes significant changes in other factors that on the long term reduce the overall value of the project. For example, it prolongs the mine life by reducing mill?s effective capacity. It also reduces the feed grade. In most cases, lower feed grade means lower mill recovery. Dilution also increases the cut-off grade which in turn reduces the overall ore utilization of a mine. In some cases, to take advantage of economies of scale, mining operations tend to plan for higher mining rates. Moving to a larger scale of operation means less selectivity, hence more dilution. This is true for all kind of deposits. High level and uncontrolled dilution may ultimately defeat the purpose of increasing production rates. If not impossible in theory it is nevertheless extremely difficult and expensive to eliminate dilution in practice. Some amount of dilution is practically unavoidable in most mining operations (Scoble and Moss, 1994). Although completely avoiding dilution may be impossible, we can measure and control it. By better understanding the root causes of the dilution and planning accordingly, it can be controlled and reduced. While we do our best to identify and calculate all the other cost items of a project, no matter how small, it is common to make general assumptions about dilution instead of quantifying it. It is common to assume a general dilution such as 5% for massive deposits and 10% for tabular shape deposits. While these figures may be a good starting point in early stages of mining studies, it does not take in to consideration the complexity of the problem. Dilution factor varies within a single mine for different benches and zones. This is due to changes we see in grade distribution and shape of ore body. It also varies based on commodity price. It is necessary to make sure that these variations are taken into account when designing or evaluating a mine. Dilution varies in different mines based on the deposit characteristics, operational aspects and economic cut-off grade. For instance, shape of the deposit, bench height, equipment size, and market conditions will have an impact on the level of dilution in a mine. It is paramount for mining projects to have a better understanding of dilution right from the beginning. In times like today, where mining operations must operate at peak efficiency, it is even more crucial to be able to calculate and have a better grasp of all the parameters influencing the economics of a project including dilution. In order to produce better project evaluations, dilution studies should be an integral part of any project.

Kriged estimates are not typically calculated on blocks substantially smaller than the sample spacing (eg the Standard Mining Unit or SMU). Moreover, the sample spacing for quality variables is often much greater than the SMU size. For short to medium term planning decisions, the shorter term variability in the quality variables is a key economic consideration in defining, setting and meeting coal product specifications.Global uncertainties can be calculated using Drill Hole Spacing Analyses (DHSA). However, knowing the precision of a variable for a one or two year production volume is usually not adequate for variables with low spatial continuity that may fluctuate significantly over daily, weekly, SMU, or shipment volumes.Is there a feasible, reasonable and valid geostatistical method to model the uncertainty of coal quality variables on blocks substantially smaller than the drill spacing (say on the SMU)?The validity of using co-kriging variances, calculated on SMUs to characterise local uncertainty, was tested using a suite of conditional simulations generated for several quality variables for BHP’s Blackwater operation. The conditional simulation results were used as a benchmark against which the results derived from the kriging variances could be compared.The agreement between the kriging and simulation methods for thickness is excellent, with much closer correlations than for the quality variables. Typically, the kriging variances give very reasonable approximations to the simulation-based uncertainties, although there could be some systematic discrepancies which may become much more critical if a classification is to be based on a thresholding of the SMUs relative uncertainties.CITATION:Mawdesley, C, Barry, D, Bertoli, O and Saha, R, 2017.
