THE failure, or disintegration, of concrete in structures, even when the cement, sand, and coarse aggregate used have passed satisfactorily all tests and inspections, is not uncommon. Such failures occur even when proper methods of mixing and placing have been used and where, weather conditions were correct. In these cases, the origin of the trouble must be sought in the cement, therefore some additional mode of determining the quality of cement must be employed. The problem is to find a simple, usable; easily applied method that will supplement the standard tests. The solution of this problem in-volves a knowledge of the chemical composition of Portland cements, also of their constitution (or componental composition), as the behavior of a cement, when gaged, is dependent on the physical and chemical characters of the compounds of which it is composed, the proportions existing between them, and the fineness of grinding. It is likewise essential to know the character, behavior, and composition of the hydration, products of Portland cement. The most promising method of attack makes use of chemical, mechanical, and petrographic methods. Chemical, by determining quantitatively not only the usual constituents, but the carbon dioxide and water. Mechanical, by determining the fineness with the air analyzer,1 which separates into fractions of various grain dimensions all of that portion, which in the ordinary sieve test passes the 200-mesh sieve and constitutes at least 75 per cent. of the total cement. These fractions may be further studied chemically and petrographically and micrometric measurements made of the grains. Petrographic, by the method of immersion, and by making thin sections from test pats of both neat cements and standard` mortars.

From the early 70?s, ?Centre de Recherche Minérale? (CRM) has conducted and co-ordinated Research and Development activities for the mineralurgical and metallurgical industries. Since 1999, CRM has continued its mandate through COREM which is a consortium of 13 members that uses the benefits and advantages of collaborative pre-competitive industry / university research. In particular, COREM?s ?In-Situ Optimization Group? is involved in the implementation of modern optimization and control tools. The POP Project was launched in order to increase and consolidate the use of modern optimization and control tools and methods for mineralurgical and metallurgical processes. To ensure a successful transfer in the industry, there are a number of essential activities that have to be undertaken. These activities have been identified by COREM?s members and are grouped into three main modules: - R&D Module: Research and Development in universities, research centres and other partners; - Technology Transfer Module: integration of new tools and methods into the POP Software, industrial applications and technical support; - Training Module: education of new engineers in universities, continuing education of plant personnel through on-site workshops and resource networking by specific information exchange tools. This paper outlines the opportunities that led to the definition of the POP Project and describes its main modules. The main features of the POP Software are presented, the first application is described and finally, future developments are discussed.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines evaluated mineral resources of the 34,043-hectare Caribou City and 41,943-hectare Stump Creek study areas in southeastern Idaho. No resources were delineated. The areas had been proposed for wilderness. Rocks underlying the study area are part of the Idaho-Wyoming Thrust Belt. At Caribou Mountain they have been intruded by diorite-monzodiorite. Where the intrusive rocks contact calcareous members of the thrust belt, skarn bodies have formed that host metal deposits. Gold, both placer and lode, occurs in the Caribou City area, and salt occurs in the Stump Creek area. Production records show 73.5 kg (2,363 ounces) of placer gold were produced; however, field studies indicate more than 2,000 kg (67,000 ounces) probably were recovered. Minor amounts of lode gold, silver, and copper were recovered from the hard rock mines. Production of salt from the Stump Creek study area in the 1860's was used by emigrants on the Oregon trail and also shipped to various mining districts for use in silver recovery. Oil and gas were drilled for, but all holes are plugged and abandoned. There are no current leases. Examined workings consisted of 25 adits, 3 shafts, 50 prospect pits, and extensive placer workings all in the northern tip of the Caribou City area, Current BLM records show 168 placer and 146 lode claims; 14 claims are patented.

Para tal, foram utilizados cilindros cromados para laminação de chapas de cobre, com amostragem da técnica de réplica epoxy. A compreensão da correlação entre microestrutura e propriedades do material é objeto de grande interesse e, ao mesmo tempo, necessário para aplicação prática na laminação a frio, combinando revestimento e produtividade. O objetivo da pesquisa atual é comparar as propriedades tribológicas do cobre antes e depois da laminação, no cilindro de trabalho e chapa, com e sem revestimento de cromo.

The results of wear on marked balls, 4, 31/2, 3, and 2 in. diam are given. All balls were forged steel of practically the same chemical analysis and hardness. The results indicate that balls in a given mill for a given length of time will have equal diameter losses, regardless of size.

Ideal iron ore sinter is produced by optimising the balance between coarse (+2 mm), stable ore nuclei and a reactive matrix consisting largely of fluxed -1 mm fines. The authors have previously published work evaluating the matrix melting behaviour of a number of fine ores, using techniques developed by CSIRO. The focus of that work was to demonstrate the contribution of the matrix to overall sinter quality, with the results showing a direct correlation between melting point, matrix porosity and strength. CSIRO has also developed a complementary test to study the behaviour of coarse ore nucleus particles in contact with the sinter matrix and provide an evaluation of their reaction and assimilation properties. This test provides valuable fundamental information that can be used to better understand the role of specific ore types and optimise blend composition.The CSIRO laboratory-scale assimilation test is carried out by embedding particles of ores of specific sizes into a fluxed matrix of known sinter blend composition, using real ores and fluxes, in a laboratory test that directly relates to pot-grate and plant sintering conditions. Samples are fired under controlled conditions in a tube furnace using a standard heating profile and a constant, low-oxygen potential atmosphere. These conditions simulate the actual sintering process while removing the effects of the many locally-variable parameters (eg temperature, oxidation potential and localised chemistry) that exist in the actual process, meaning that trends in behaviour can be more clearly seen. Designed as a compromise between the industry-standard pot-grate sintering test and a more fundamental test using chemical reagents, the aim is to isolate and evaluate the nucleus behaviour of an individual blend component to allow an improved understanding of the role that an individual ore plays in a specific blend. Measured cross-sections of the resulting fired samples provide a semi-quantitative measure of reactivity, while accompanying photomicrographs allow a qualitative assessment of assimilation properties (eg volume and distribution of secondary porosity generated during reaction).In this paper, to complement the previous work published on melting behaviour, nucleus particles were selected from hematite, hematite-goethite and goethite ores and embedded in a simulated plant sinter matrix. Drilled core particles of two sizes were tested at fixed temperatures simulating low- (<1300°C) and high-temperature (>1300°C) sintering conditions. The resulting assimilation properties are compared and discussed as a function of particle size, temperature and ore/sinter mineralogy. The implications for the contribution of each component to the prediction of blend sinter quality are also discussed.CITATION:Ware, N and Manuel, J, 2015. "MgCl2 brines present a number of potential advantages for the processing of saprolite ores for nickel production. With a chloride system it is economically requisite to recover hydrochloric acid, which can be performed in a more energy efficient manner by precipitation and subsequent decomposition, as compared with conventional pyrohydrolysis. In addition, concentrated MgCl2 solutions enhance the activity of acid used, allow atmospheric leaching at elevated temperature and inhibit magnesium dissolution, which reduces acid consumption and increases metal selectivity. Leaching and iron control experiments have been conducted in concentrated MgCl2 brines, up to 4.5 m, to determine the most amenable process conditions. INTRODUCTIONChloride metallurgy has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years, especially with respect to the treatment of nickel laterites. Although the limonitic fraction can sometimes be economically treated by High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL), acid-consumption problems are encountered with the higher magnesium content of the saprolite fraction. As magnesium does not hydrolyze under HPAL conditions, as iron and aluminum do, any sulphuric acid used to leach magnesium is subsequently neutralized and wasted. In addition, this magnesium must later be disposed of in some fashion, further complicating the process. The most common method used to process saprolite is the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace (RKEF). This uses a kiln to dry and preferentially reduce nickel, before sending the calcine to an electric furnace. Although nickel recoveries are high, and the problems of acid consumption are avoided, the capital and energy costs associated with this process are high (de Bakker, 2011).The problems outlined above have led to the investigation of an atmospheric chloride process for the treatment of saprolite ores. The use of a chloride system presents a number of advantages, but also a few limitations. Metal chlorides tend to be very soluble, with a few notable exceptions (silver, mercury and lead), allowing for smaller processing equipment through more concentrated solutions. This solubility also serves to reduce the potential for scale formation. In addition, a hydrochloric acid leach is more aggressive than a comparable sulphuric acid system, and the activity of the hydrogen ion can be augmented by further chloride addition (Peek, 2011). This activity augmentation in concentrated chloride systems, first reported by Jansz, has repeatedly been referenced as a motivating factor behind chloride hydrometallurgy (Jansz, 1983; Harris and Magee, 2003; Harris et al., 2004; Demopoulos et al., 2008; McDonald and Whittington, 2008; Demopoulos, 2011; Peek, 2011; Verhulst and Lakshmanan, 2011). This activity increase allows a similar amount of acid to perform more in a concentrated solution than in a dilute solution, decreasing overall acid requirements. As such, much focus has been placed on leaching in concentrated chloride systems, or brines, using calcium, magnesium or sodium as the cation (McDonald and Whittington, 2008)."

The information is derived by making use of the magnetic properties of borehole cores which must show visible representations of bedding or fault planes. Complete knowledge of these factors aids greatly in the successful exploitation of both ore and petroleum deposits.

In deep strip mines the job of moving overburden may be so much bigger, and more costly than the removal of coal or ore that the operation is often called dirt mining. Constant improvement in stripping machines and techniques of using them is needed to offset rising costs and to increase production in mines that are now operating, and to make it economically possible to work deeper or thinner deposits.

Reliable measurement and control of the pulp-froth interface (froth depth) in the flotation columns is critical to achieve the desired metallurgical performance. Shallow froths result in a reduction of grade because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery because of the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone. The cleaner circuit at Miduk copper concentrator consists of three parallel MicrocelTM flotation columns 4 m in diameter and 12 m in height. The interface level of the flotation columns is measured by two pressure sensors located at 1.4 and 2.4 m from the cell lip (in the collection zone). In this study the performance of the level detection system at different operating conditions was evaluated. A calibrated float-ultrasonic location system was used for measuring the actual froth depth. The results indicated that the existing level control system was subject to considerable error. The absolute error was found to be 33.27 cm. This was mainly attributed to the constant set-point value assigned to the froth density (ρf=0.3 g/cm3), which actually varies with the operating conditions. The actual froth density at different conditions was calculated and its average value (ρf=0.12 g/cm3) was re-set in the control system. This resulted in substantial reduction in the level-detecting error. Recommendations for more accurate measurement of the interface level were presented. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a complicated process because of many involved variables. One of the most significant controlled variables in the flotation process is the pulp-froth interface (froth depth). The froth depth has a profound influence on the metallurgical performance parameters (i.e. grade and recovery). Shallow froths result in grade reduction because of particle entrainment and deep froths reduce recovery resulted from the drop back of entrained and weak hydrophobic particles to the pulp zone (Finch and Dobby, 1990). Various techniques have been developed for measuring the interface level of the flotation cells in the last few decades. These techniques can be classified as: Techniques based on hydrostatic pressure measurements (Finch & Dobby, 1990), Techniques based on the density gradient (float) (Moys & Finch, 1988), Techniques based on conductivity measurements (Uribe-Salas, 1991), Techniques based on temperature measurements (Moys & Finch, 1989).

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations require the injection of material into the annular tail voids as the machine advances ahead of the segmental concrete lining. This annular gap is created because the cutting diameter of the TBM has to be larger than the outer diameter of the concrete segments of the tunnel lining. Fundamentally, the two basic types of annular grout are thick, concrete like mortars and thin, mobile, two-component grouts. While some European countries seem to still favor the concrete like mortars, from a global perspective it is now the two-component type grouts that dominate the industry. Two-component type grouts are comprised of an “A” component grout (typically cement, flyash, bentonite and a retarder/stabilizer) and a “B” component accelerator (sodium silicate or water glass as it is sometimes known). They are thus sometimes referred to as A/B type or bi-component grouts and were pioneered by the Japanese over 30 years ago. They offer a host of operational benefits over thick mortars, such as reduced settlement (Feddema et. al., 2001), effective penetration of the void space, with less energy, and reduced strain on the segmented linings (Robinson et. al., 2007). Two-component grouts are highly mobile and can be pumped many kilometers. The use of a retarder/stabilizer can also extend the shelf life of the “A” component grout for several days while the early strength of the accelerated grout stabilizes the ground and supports the segmental liner almost immediately. The batch plants that prepare the two-component grouts use one of two possible mixing methods for preparing the “A” component grout. The simplest plants use paddle type mixers and numerous tunnels worldwide have been successfully grouted using this technology. However, a superior type of mixer is available, namely the high shear colloidal mixer. Keller Colcrete successfully pioneered the development of the colloidal mixer back in 1937 and for over 75 years colloidal mixers have been internationally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts (Houlsby, 1990). These mixers are used in grout preparation for radioactive waste encapsulation, hydro dam grout curtains, soilcrete jet grouting, soil nailing, and numerous other geotechnical applications. In tunnelling, these mixers are also used for ground treatment, compensation grouting and for the preparation of bentonite lubrication for pipejacking. It has been only within the last decade however that these high-shear colloidal mixers have been adapted for use in the preparation of two-component grouts."

"Several copper projects exclusively utilizing in-situ recovery methods are currently under development in Arizona. Favorable conditions for In-Situ Copper Recovery (ISCR) include a saturated orebody, fracture hosted mineralization, hydraulic conductivity sufficient to effectively inject and recover solutions using wells, and a relatively flat background hydraulic gradient. Safe operation of an ISCR project requires that the operator have the ability to induce and maintain localized hydraulic gradients, thereby controlling the movement of injected and recovered solutions. Benefits of ISCR include reduced initial capital, and a greatly reduced environmental footprint. THE ISCR METHOD EXPLAINED The method chosen to extract a mineral from a deposit is driven by characteristics such as its size, grade and depth of burial. Large lower grade deposits that require significant excavation to access using surface methods are potential candidates for in-situ recovery. ISCR may also be ideal for smaller deposits due to the lower initial capital. However, regardless of the size of the deposit, certain hydrogeologic conditions must be present for ISCR to be successful. In-situ recovery methods do not require excavations of rock from the surface or underground, resulting in a dramatic reduction in surface disturbance when compared to conventional mining. With the ISCR method, what is visible above ground is the processing plant, well heads, piping, process solution impoundments and evaporation ponds. There are no waste rock piles, tailings impoundments, leach pads, or impacts associated with blasting and hauling. Other benefits include reduced initial capital, reduced dust and noise, and lower water use. Early testing of the in-situ copper recovery method by Occidental on the Van Dyke deposit east of Phoenix and by Kennecott at Safford Arizona in the 1970s produced encouraging results, but the permitting regime for a large-scale operation was not yet in place. Additional testing and commercial application of in-situ copper recovery techniques have expanded since the 1980s, most commonly in conjunction with open pit or underground mining operations. For example, several operations in Arizona (San Manuel, Miami East and Tohono) have used in-situ techniques to extract additional copper following conventional mining from parts of the deposits adjacent to open pits or underground workings. Where the rock has been broken up by conventional methods, the method is called “in-place” leaching. The US government has also been involved in assessing in-situ techniques. For example, joint research was conducted by the US Bureau of Mines and industry on the Santa Cruz deposit in Arizona; and both federal and state agencies have been involved to establish the comprehensive permitting regime that exists today. Currently there are several projects in Arizona being evaluated as stand-alone ISCR operations."

To comply with the California Mine Safety Orders pertaining to transportation of mine workers over mine railroads, the management of the New Idria mine in San Benito County, Calif., designed special man-cars. The new regulations, dated October 1958, make it mandatory for mine man-cars to be designed for carrying five or more men to and from the mine workings. At the New Idria mine, largest single producer of mercury in the U.S., each shift normally employs about 70 men. However, with the possibility of a future increase in the work force, seven man-cars were constructed with a total carrying capacity of 84 men. The general design of the mine man-cars was dictated by safety regulations plus the physical characteristics of the mine-low headroom, limited side clearance in haulageways, and track irregularities due to ground swells. The cars measure 10 ft long, 44 in. wide, and 50 in. high and were built at an average cost of $450 per car. All assembly work was done at the mine site.

Quality assurance and quality control of drilled shafts has become a concern due to difficulties in accurately locating construction anomalies and determining load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts. Various non-destructive evaluation techniques have been developed to estimate the integrity of the concrete in drilled shafts. While these techniques have been widely accepted, variables and unknowns can affect the measurement results. Results are typically difficult to interpret, leading to unnecessary construction delays and possible litigation over shaft integrity. In addition, influences of surrounding ground materials, stress states under different load conditions, and crack and residual stress development during concrete curing further complicate determination of shaft performance. This paper focuses on the evaluation of load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts under various conditions by numerical analysis and modeling.

Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.

Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

"By testing the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor of concentrated Dahongshan, mill scale, anthracite and light-burned dolomite in different frequency and temperature, and by studying the temperature-rising characteristics of the materials in the microwave field of 2.45GHz in frequency, the research in the paper shows that to reach at 1250°C under the same condition -2KW the microwave power and 30g the mass --the time concentrated Dahongshan takes is 330s, whereas the millscale is 855s and the anthracite is 820s. About the last one, the higher the temperature is, the stronger the absorptivity is. After the temperature has rose to 400°C, the anthracite's absorptivity increases dramatically. The result of the research would serve as the foundation of the further study on making direct reduced iron by microwave heating.1. IntroductionUnder the microwave fields, materials' dissipation of dielectric bodies would generate thermal effect. Therefore, the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor are closely related to materials' ability of absorbing microwave energy-the larger the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor are, the stronger the material's ability of absorbing microwave energy is, and the better the thermal effect would be[1-2]. In order to research how to make reduced iron from iron ore fines by microwave heating deeply and systematically, the test of raw materials' dielectric constants and dielectric loss factors are of the essence. What's more, because a mineral' conductivity is influenced by its components and crystal structure[3], it is necessary to study different materials' different temperature-rising characteristics; hence such studies would provide theoretical foundation of further research."

As a result of strategic analysis in respect of the needs for air quality management a new advanced and holistic approach to air quality management process was introduced in the North West Province (NWP) of South Africa. The process is based on the principle of co-operative management. It involves both active participation of all Interested and Affected Parties (I&AP) and the holistic approach to solving problems with the underlying principles of shared ownership and sustainable development. The process consists of the followings phases: ? Industrial process quantification ? Quantification of impacts ? Formulation of the required control measures ? Definitions of certificate conditions ? Implementation of an adequate compliance management system at company level ? Ongoing co-operative air quality and system management with the strategic objective of continuous improvements The system has been successfully introduced in the North Province and proved to be an effective management tool and aids assurance of sustained environmental ability to cope with the pressure of industrial developments. The benefits and effectiveness are discussed using Hernic Ferrochrome as an example. Hernic Ferrochrome is one of the first companies, which successfully implemented this system.
