NMBGMR has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills, geochemistry, photographs, and bibliography. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential, and other data. The NURE stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses for water samples. ArcMap includes location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production, and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e. hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point-sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

AMERICANS like engines, but more than anything they like powerful engines, and next to that they want them quiet, silent, smooth; perhaps a slight purr might be permitted, but they must not knock. To provide a gasoline to fit all these requirements, American petroleum technologists have experimented for years, and mounting octane numbers of the gasolines the refiners have produced both before and during the war bear witness to their success. The question on everyone's mind now is what may we expect in the way of engine fuel in the postwar period? The gasoline drouth during the war rationing, the inconvenience of doing without a car were major annoyances to all motorists, but they put up with them pretty cheerfully for the most part. However, now that the war is over, and the jalopies are all out and the better cars have been taken off the jacks and brought out on the road, the call is for "Some of that good gas-fill her up, if you please."

Placer mining is the mining and treatment of alluvial deposits for the recovery, of their valuable minerals. The method has been used principally for mining gold, but a large proportion of the world's production of tin, platinum, and diamonds and other gem stones and minor quantities of other heavy minerals have been won in this manner. In the United States, as in the world at large, gold has been the principal mineral obtained by placer mining. Minor quantities of metals of the platinum group are recovered with the gold in some localities. Important quantities of sapphires have been produced at placer mines in Montana, and tungsten minerals have been obtained on a commercial scale from placer deposits in California and Colorado. Other heavy minerals or gem stones, however, have not been mined to any important extent by this method in the United States. The search for placer gold and the working of the deposits when found have had much to do with the early development of the West. Placer mining has been gradually overtaken and surpassed in importance by lode-gold mining, until in 1932 less than a quarter of the country's total gold production was from placers or about an eighth, excluding Alaska. In 1932 about 76 percent of the placer gold produced in the United States was recovered by dredging. Although other forms of placer mining still are important, they have been declining for many years, as the richest and most readily mined deposits of gravel along the stream courses have been exhausted. During 1931 and 1932 there was a revival of small-scale mining, but few new deposits were discovered.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. This information circular is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines in which the methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau are discussed. This report describes the three largest company-operated uranium mines of Climax Uranium Co. - the G-1, the Mineral Joe, and the Frank No. 1. Climax Uranium Co., a subsidiary of American Metal Climax, Inc., was [corporated] May 11, 1950, just 2 years after establishment of the domestic uranium program by the Atomic Energy Commission. Twenty-five years earlier Arthur H. Bunker, now chairman of the board, American Metal Climax, Inc., organized and operated the U. S. Vanadium Co. at Rifle, Colo.3/ Soon after Climax Uranium Co. was organized, it entered into a contract with the Federal Government to build a uranium-vanadium processing mill in Grand Junction, Colo. Under the contract Climax leased from the Federal Government certain uranium-bearing lands that had been withdrawn from public entry in 1948. From Minerals, Engineering Co. on June 12, 1950, Climax acquired other uranium-vanadium properties on Calamity, Outlaw, and Monogram Mesas in Colorado and on Polar Mesa and in the Yellow Cat area of Utah. To house the milling equipment, Climax leased the old Grand Junction sugarmill building of the Holly Sugar Co. Milling facilities, based on a then new process developed for treating both uranium and vanadium, were completed, and the plant went into production in 1951.

Rockburst prediction is crucial in deep hard rock mines and tunnels to make safer working conditions. Due to the complex interaction of many factors involved in rockburst prediction, such as multi-variable and multi-interference factors, three hybrid support vector machine (SVM) models optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO), Harris hawk optimization (HHO), and moth flame optimization (MFO) are proposed to predict rockburst hazard level (RHL). The RHL is determined according to four kinds of microseismic characteristic parameters including angular frequency ratio, total energy, apparent stress, and convexity radius. Then, six types of microseismic characteristic parameters are taken as input variables in 343 sets of data, including angular frequency ratio and total energy, etc.. And the RHL is taken as the output target of rockburst prediction. The classification performance of PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM hybrid models is evaluated by accuracy (ACC), precision (PRE), and kappa coefficient. Findings reveal that the MFO-SVM model performs best in terms of accuracy, with ACC, PRE, and kappa coefficients reaching 0.9559, 0.9063, and 0.9094 respectively, while PSO-SVM and HHO-SVM have similar performances. However, the PSO-SVM, HHO-SVM, and MFO-SVM all perform better than the unoptimized SVM model. This confirms that the three optimization algorithms significantly enhance the rockburst prediction capacity of the SVM model to help mine practitioners apply machine learning methods to rockburst prediction problems appropriately.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted ground pressure analysis of a wide abutment-type chain pillar in a two-entry gate road of a Western U.S. coal mine with an extremely weak immediate roof. About 15 m of fragile, low-strength mudstone lies between the seam and the lowest competent roof member. Three-and two-entry gate road designs with several pillar sizes and various secondary support systems have been employed to improve tailgate-entry stability, with varying results. This report discusses gate road layout and performance and secondary support effectiveness. The results of the pillar pressure study are compared to pillar loading predicted by a widely used pillar design method and to similar studies in other mines. A stability evaluation of the most recent longwall headgate, using the USBM Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) method, indicates marginal stability in first-panel mining and instability in second-panel mining. The ALPS method and the USBM Coal Mine Roof Rating system are used to evaluate tailgate-mining stability of the previous gate roads and to determine pillar and entry width and top coal thickness criteria for tailgate stability in future panels.

The porphyry copper province of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, is the largest copper producing region in the world. Most of the deposits occur in Arizona which now produces over 54% of the newly mined copper in the United" States. As the many recent discoveries are brought into production, Arizona's share of the nation's copper production will increase. The term "porphyry copper" as used in this paper includes all deposits of generally low grade disseminated copper mineralization amenable to bulk mining techniques. Therefore, copper deposits such as Pima-Mission, Twin Buttes, and Vekol where the copper mineralization occurs principally in the intruded rocks will be considered as "porphyry copper" deposits. Most of the deposits have been discovered since World War II, consequently, the southwest, and particularly southern Arizona is perhaps the most intensively explored area for copper deposits on earth. Most of the major natural resource companies in the United States and Canada maintain exploration offices in southern Arizona. To illustrate the success of exploration efforts, the location of porphyry copper deposits either known or producing prior to World War II are shown on figure 1 and the deposits discovered since World War II which are either in production or in the exploration and development stage are shown on figure 2.

Mining is a major global industry that requires the moving of considerable volumes of earth and rock (overburden) to win the valuable ore prior to mineral extraction and processing. As a result of this process, new landscapes are created, both extracted voids and overburden piles, as well as infrastructure for management of mine operations, wastewater, tailings, other raw materials, transportation and extreme rainfall events. Resource companies must develop and obtain regulatory approval for detailed plans that manage this displaced material through all phases of the life-of-mine and rehabilitate the site at the time of closure (including landform stability, revegetation and ongoing management).Individual mine sites operate in long time frames (ten to 50 years), with several mines often operating in the same region, generating cumulative overburden volumes and heavily altering the original landscape. These impacts are universally framed as a negative consequence of the industry, especially by modern society that values natural (and some agricultural) landscapes as pristine and almost sacred. Overburden and tailings are also seen as a problem, and are a significant business cost to mining practice.This paper looks to investigate perceptions of mining and post-mining landscapes, questioning the aesthetically driven emphasis on the ‘natural’. It proposes instead an opportunity to reframe the way we look at overburden and landscape impacts from mining, exploring the possibility of imagined post-mine landscapes unburdened by traditional aesthetic expectations. These landscapes, to be conceived by regional stakeholder roundtables, have the capacity to be built by regional mining consortia as a foundation for sustainable post-mining economies.Post-mine regeneration offers both the motivation and the basic materials to create an altogether new environment from a blank slate. The Bureau of Mines is operated to assist in promoting economic development through increased efficiency in the mining, preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to aid in conserving mineral resources through preventing waste; and to help the mining industry improve health conditions and increase safety. Accomplishment of those ends is sought through investigation of scientific, technologic, and economic problems of the, mineral industries and dissemination of resulting information. Building materials of mineral origin constitute an important product of mining, and the Bureau makes studies of these in the various fields mentioned. The following commodities come within this classification: Asbestos, anhydrite, asphalt, cement, clay and clay products, diatomite, dolomite, glass and mineral wool, granite, greenstone, gypsum, lightweight building materials, lime, limestone, magnesite, marble, sand, sand and gravel, sandstone, sand-lime brick, slate, soapstone, and trap rock.

The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

When assessing the safety of a tailings dam, the constant weight method (CWM) is one of the most commonly used methods. However, when the evaluation indicator value suggests serious defects, the evaluation value is often inconsistent with the actual situation. To address this issue, the variable weight method (VWM) is introduced to assess the safety of the tailings dam. Initially, a three-layer indicator system for dam failure safety assessment is built, and individual indicator values are divided into four grades. Then, an appropriate state variable weight function is constructed and relevant parameters are determined. Finally, a case study is illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the model. The assessment results of the VWM more closely represent the actual situation than that of the CWM, which is more helpful for decision makers and technicians to take scientific and reasonable precautionary measures, thereby improving the safety management of the tailings pond.

Renewed interest in olivine refractories has led to efforts to characterize them employing modern techniques of experimentation and data analysis. Initial studies have focused on determination of physical and thermophysical properties. Special equipment for the determination of thermal shock resistance and creep behavior have been constructed. Optimal compositions for maximizing various properties are being identified using appropriate statistical techniques. The overall goal is to develop response surfaces for each of a selected group of engineering design and use properties. Development of ?olivine Refractories? in the United States The term "olivine refractories" is used here because it does appear that domestic deposits of this rock will be the focus of renewed interest and "olivinell is the preferred term in this country. There are extensive deposits of high quality olivines extending through parts of Georgia. North Carolina and in the state of Washington. The eastern olivines are much more localized and extensively altered compared to the western materials. The Washington olivines exist as massive rock deposits in the Twin Sisters mountain area northeast of Seattle and their inaccessi-bility has slowed efforts to develop them. The North Carolina olivines have been used in steel plant applications since the 1930's. Geologists use the term "olivine" to describe assemblages of ortho-silicates. 2RO.SiO2, wherein the RO may be MgO. FeO. MnO. etc. When the RO consists essentlally of MgO and FeO. the material is called dunite and. as such, is synonymous with "refractory olivine." Refractory olivines utilizing North Carolina materials were developed for brick products by Birch and Harvey in this country around the mid-1930's. (I) Their work was completely independent of that of V. M. Goldschmidt and co-workers who used massive dunites located in Denmark. Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, more commonly known as soda ash, is the most important of the alkalies. Sulfuric acid is the only heavy chemical, Soda ash enters the market either as the natural product or as a manufactured derivative of common salt. Notwithstanding their common occurrence in closed basins of the Western States, natural sodas are produced at present by only four firms, all in the same California area, and satisfy only 4 percent of domestic demand for soda ash; soda ash made from salt supplies 96 percent of the requirements. The impossibility in wartime of routing all westbound American shipping through the Panama Cami.l has curtailed Pacific Coast receipts of soda ash and-increased the importance of local resources of natural carbonates. One of the most promising of ·these is the recently discovered trona (sodium sesquicarbonate)· deposit 2o·mnes· west of Green River, Wyo. Reserves are likely to run into hundreds ·of million·s of tons, and the deposit probably could be worked by the room-and~pillar· system of mining, like common salt or coal. • • Raw materials ·ne·cessary for manufacturing synthetic soda ash occur closely associated in m·afiy parts· bf the United 8tates. Almost unlimited resources of salt in brines and in rock-salt depbsits are located near limestone quarries in many areas. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Gays in which- the policies of the U.S. government, mining companies and third world countries affect each other with regard to the availability of minerals. The interaction involves U.S. policy towards the mining industry, the policies of the companies themselves, and the policies of third world countries towards the U.S. and multinational companies. It is assumed in this discussion that U.S. policy will continue to be to seek certain minerals from abroad rather than attempt to develop domestic sources for all its requirements. This would seem to make sense both from the standpoint of cost, and for preserving what domestic resources there are so as to maintain some degree of market leverage. In today's jargon, this means greater dependency on the "third world", which, for this discussion, includes virtually all the nations in Africa, South America and Asia. Concern for availability raises the important distinction between dependency and vulnerability, and as the Director of the Bureau of Mines has pointed out, the two are not the same. Dependency is not neccessarily a bad thing; it is vulnerability that counts (Norman, 1980)

This report describes the engineering work leading to the design of an underground coal mine piping system to transport approximately 2,000,000 cubic feet per day of methane gas to the surface from degasification holes drilled horizontally into the coalbed in existing coal mines. Safety instrumentation for detection of gas leaks and provisions for automatic emergency shutdown are included in the design. It also includes specifications for a safe system of handling gas, water, and drill cuttings during drilling of the horizontal holes and recommendations for compressor and metering facilities at the surface. The main pipeline is recommended to be constructed of polyethylene plastic pipe joined by a butt fusion method while lateral lines and separator and meter piping at the horizontal holes are recommended to be screwed steel piping. The materials used are to be resistant to the forces of impact exerted by falling rock. The pipelines are to be suspended from the ceiling with pipe hangers. All steel components are protected from chemical corrosion by applying protective coatings and the vertical casing to the surface is protected from electrolytic corrosion by a rectifier station. Methane gas detectors monitor the mine atmosphere to detect the presence of gas leaks and a pneumatic plastic tubing line provides for control of the safety shutdown system. Both the recommended design and the required construction procedures are in compliance with the applicable Federal codes for coal mine safety.

The Bureau of Mines conducted mineral investigations of the Peace Rock and Deadwood River roadless areas in Idaho, in 1992. Literature research was done by the Idaho Geological Survey. The study areas contain black sand placers (thorium, columbium, tantalum, titanium, uranium, and rare earth elements), gold, and molybdenum prospects. Except for unrecorded placer gold, there has been no mineral production from the areas. No mineral resources were delineated, but a multi-million tonne molybdenum resource is in the Big Pine Creek area and a 142 million m' black sand deposit is in the Stolle Meadows, Peace Valley, and Deadwood River areas. The Deadwood mine produced zinc, lead, and silver. There are six mining districts in and adjoining the areas; Warm Lake, Deadwood, Garden Valley/Lowman, Banner, Summit Flat, and Grimes Pass. Few claims, mostly placer, were active in the study area in 1992. The study areas are underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Most of the deposits are alluvial accumulations of heavy minerals weathered out of the Idaho batholith. Stockwork and narrow veins along shears account for the base and precious metal concentrations. Eleven prospects were examined. Workings consist of drill holes, pits and adits. Geothermal resources (hot springs) occur mainly along the Middle Fork Payette River; Vulcan Hot Springs is a designated Known Geothermal Resource Area. Sand and gravel resources are of local interest.

When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

The preparation and crystallization behavior of glass-ceramics were investigated with differential ther- mal analysis (DTA), physical and mechanical properties testing, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimal flexural strength exceeding 90 MPa were achieved in firing temperature zone of 1170–1200 °C. Anorthite (CaAl Si O ) and diopside [Ca(Mg, Fe)Si O ] can be identified in the 2 2 8 2 6 glass-ceramicsandCaAl Si O isthepredominantcrystalphase.Fineparticleswith 2 2 8 average diameter of 200 nm distributed uniformly in the glass-ceramics. Granular crystals are intensively interconnected and constituted a crystal skeleton soaked in theglassmatrix.LeachingtoxicitytestdetectedCr(VI)of0.016and0.010 mg/Lof the water-quenched frit and glass-ceramics, respectively. This method provides an effective and comprehensive technique for the detoxification and utilization of chromium slag at low cost and large-scale. (cid:1) (cid:1)
