In underground coal mining, the specification and control of belt and bunker capacities are complicated by (1) stochastic and intermittent conveyor loading, (2) a limited ability to reduce surge at the mine face, and (3) occasional overlapping of loading from two or more mine faces on the conveyors. Recently, because of longwall mining and other factors, the capacity requirements of most mine conveying systems have risen substantially; as a result, efficient capacity design and control have become important mine planning issues. This paper reviews these design issues and their associated modeling procedures. Design considerations and modeling difficulties are also examined.

The first industrial applications of roller presses at the comminution were in 1984 in the cement industry. Since then, the equipment has taken more space in the mineral industry. However, many challenges are still present in this equipment, more specifically regarding to ore breakage predictability. The application of this equipment in the pellet feed preparation is fundamental to increase the surface area (blaine index) of the mineral using reduced energy consumption. However, even after several pressing steps, it is still challenging to achieve granulometry in percentages required for the pelletizing process. Currently these levels are reached in wet milling processes, typically carried out in wet ball mills. For the of pellets formation in pelletizing plants, both pelletizing and the firing processes requires finer granulometry. The motivation of this work is to study the pelletizing process, comparing the physical quality of the pellets produced only through comminuted ore in roller press the pellets produced in conventional comminution using circuit with ball mill.

The adsorption of heterocyclic collectors such 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO), 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and their derivatives on pyrite form a basis in understanding the flotation reactivity that may be applicable in a wide range of sulphide minerals. This study uses a computational and experimental approach to determine the heat of adsorption of MBT, MBO, MBI and modified MBT collectors onto pyrite surfaces. Computational calculations found that the adsorption energies were in the order: MBO > MBI > MBT. The heterocyclic collectors were adsorbed in their thiolate form on the surface. In the case of the pyrite (100) surface, the MBT adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur atom, while MBO and MBI adsorbed through the exocyclic sulphur and N atoms onto the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The (111) surface was found to be more reactive and different adsorption mechanisms were predicted, where the MBT exocyclic sulphur atom bridged on the 5- coordinated Fe and surface 2-coordinated sulphur atoms, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. In the case of MBO and MBI, dissociation of the exocyclic sulphur atom from the collector occurred with subsequent interaction with the surface 5-cordinated Fe and 2-coordinated S atoms. This resulted in the collector carbon atom adsorbing on the surface 2-coordinated S atom, while the N atom adsorbed on the 5-coordinated Fe atom. The adsorption of the modified MBT was found to be more exothermic than the MBT, which showed that introduction of a –CS2 group on the exocyclic sulphur atom improved the affinity of MBT on the surface, and was thus a better flotation collector. The computational results were supported by experimental enthalpy of adsorption measurements and microflotation tests. The chemistry of the heterocyclic thioamides is complicated by the fact that they can exist in a number of tautomeric and ionic forms at different pH’s. This is discussed in relation to the flotation and calorimetric data.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. Electrowinning and solvent extraction are crucial steps in the production of high-purity copper. However, safety concerns have been raised regarding the acid mist generated from the electrowinning process. The mist generated results in health risks to workers and damage to machinery and infrastructure. Currently, chemicals and pellets are used to control acid mist. However, the effectiveness of these controls may vary depending on the type of organic solvent used in the solvent extraction process, which can influence the generation of acid mist. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of organic solvents and surfactants on acid mist suppression. In this study, an electrolyte is contacted with organic solvents to simulate the solvent extraction. The electrolyte is dosed with 20 mg/L of surfactant at each contact. Acid mist testing is performed on the electrolyte separated from the organic phase at the end of the solvent extraction step. The mist collected is analyzed to determine the level of acid mist generated. The results of this study indicate that organic solvents and surfactants showed significant acid mist suppression, but with somewhat different suppression efficiencies. After first contact, Licorice and the organic, for instance, showed a suppression efficiency of up to 69.7% but its efficiency gradually decreased as the number of contacts increased.

"In an attempt to address the issue of rising labour costs, and to improve productivity, a laser-based system to guide underground LHDs and trucks has been developed. This comprehensive system is known as the Opti-Trak system.Essentially, the vehicle is equipped with front and rear-mounted lasers which scan a reference strip mounted on the drift back. The vehicle follows this reference strip and in addition, based on reflective bar codes mounted beside the reference strip, initiates certain functions (i.e. dump cycle, speed change, brake check, etc.). Any programming that is drift-specific is handled by the positioning of the reference strips and bar codes. Consequently, the vehicle can easily travel to many different haulageways or branches, providing the reference strip and bar codes are in place.The advantages of this system are an immediate elimination of haulage operator costs and an increase in available hauling time to 7 hours out of an 8-hour shift as compared to the typical 5Y2 out of 8 hours that a manned haulage system offers.This paper describes the Opti-Trak system and the benefits to be realized from automation of mine haulage requirements."

In 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of 68,458 acres of the Clan Alpine Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-030-102) which covers 196,128 acres in Churchill County, NV. Most of the area studied is underlain by Tertiary volcanic rocks. In the northeast corner of the study area, an upthrown block of Triassic sedimentary rocks partially extends into the area. The study area is probably part of a large eroded caldera. No major mines or active claims are within the study area. Field investigations included examination of workings in Starr Canyon, historical and recent mining activity near the mouth of Florence Canyon, other mining claims, and anomalous zones delineated by data from Great Basin GEM Joint Venture studies. No mineral resources were identified, but sample results indicate one significant mineralized zone situated along a northwest trend between the head of Starr Canyon and the head of Cherry Creek may contain precious metal resources. Further investigation of this zone is warranted.

THIS paper will present a review of the mining operations of one of Canada's most lately established gold mining districts (1). The history of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas is interesting in view of the fact that, although they have long been the scene of a certain amount of mining activity, they remained little more than an uninhabited wilderness until 1933, since which time ten producing gold mines and mills have been established in permanent operation, eight of these having entered production since the beginning of 1937. As complete a background as possible will be given concerning the major influences having a bearing upon living and economic conditions in the mining communities. The object, here, is to show the diversity of problems which demand the attention of the operator starting up and operating a new mine in present times, and to indicate the ways in which these problems are successfully met in this district. A description of the power facilities and plant equipment will be followed by a summary of the problems encountered and methods applied in exploration and development. This is to aid in forming a background showing the circumstances which influence the mining methods and costs of the various operations. The paper will conclude with a description of the mining methods used and the costs of the operations, including summarized analyses of the stoping methods and mining conditions. The various phases of operation will be dealt with separately, in so far as this is possible, in order to present clearly the salient features. It is necessary, however, that the reader bear completely and constantly in mind the fact that in actual operations these phases arc, to a large extent, intimately related and greatly affect each other, as well as being, in turn, affected by other circumstances beyond the control of the operator. A few of these circumstances are: capital available during the development period and early stages of productive operation; strength of rock comprising the ore and its boundary walls; grade, size, shape, and location of ore-bodies; and many other natural items which must be carefully weighed in relation to the details of operation.

Spirals have become one of the most popular methods for treating fine coal. Unfortunately, spirals tend to produce an undesirably high specific gravity cut-point and often misplace significant amounts of coal and/or rock. In the present study, a process-engineering tool known as linear circuit analysis was used to identify problems with traditional spiral circuits and to suggest alternative configurations. These analyses indicate that a modified rougher-cleaner circuit incorporating a middlings recycle stream offers the best option for improving performance while maintaining a reasonable circulating load. In light of this finding, a full-scale test circuit was installed and evaluated at an existing preparation plant. Data obtained from the plant tests indicate that the new spiral circuit can simultaneously reduce cut-point and improve separation efficiency. Preliminary economic analyses show that the new circuit provides an attractive payback on the capital investment.

During 1982 and 1983, the Bureau of Mines concentrated its fugitive dust control research on haulage road dust suppression by newer chemi-cals relatively unknown in the mineral industry, innovative dust control designs for haulage trucks, chemical tailing basin stabilization, and combined chemical and vegetation tailing basin stabilization. Relatively unknown dust suppression chemicals and innovative aerodynamic modifications to haulage truck fender designs were tested on a Minnesota sand and gravel operation haulage road. Magnesium chloride salt at 95-pct control efficiency and a petroleum derivative at 70-pct control efficiency were effective in suppressing dust generated by haulage vehicles; however, none of the fender modifications were successful. Commonly used dust suppressant chemicals were tested on a Minnesota taconite tailing basin to reduce the dust lift-off during the spring and fall dry seasons. The most successful chemical was lignin sulfonate with a seasonal cost of less than $200 per acre to achieve 90-pct dust control. When chemical treatments for immediate dust control were com-bined with revegetation for permanent control, the most promising chemical treatment based on vegetation response was lime-neutralized lignin sulfonate.

The Ernest Henry Mine is currently a copper-gold open pit operation situated in north-west Queensland, Australia. It is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper with a current throughput of 11 million tonnes per annum; however, open pit operations are scheduled to cease in late 2011. The deposit dips at approximately 45¦ and extends for at least another 400 vertical metres below the final 530 m deep pit design. Resource drilling from 2002 until mid 2008 has enabled an Indicated Mineral Resource to be established to 1000 m below surface. Scoping and prefeasibility studies (PFS) have been completed toward determining if this resource is suitable for underground mining and a feasibility study is currently progressing with a sublevel caving (SLC) concept. This paper briefly describes the process by which the SLC method was selected, conclusions regarding the non-selected methods, and then discusses the optimisation process used to derive the mining plan. The key optimisation parameters include the production drive spacing, level spacing, draw strategy, cut-off grade and production rate. Key risks will then be assessed and economic sensitivities studied. Final sensitivities will use Monte Carlo simulations to improve the transparency of the projectÆs risk profile. The feasibility study (FS) began in March 2008 and this paper describes the main optimisation steps at the time of writing and outlines the plan for study completion through to March 2009.

Large room and pillar mines are characterized by numerous and widespread working places. Ventilation requirements are high since each panel employs men and equipment that work simultaneously in multiple headings. Also, it usually is not feasible to redirect airflow from idle to active panels as the demands of each shift vary so every panel in the mine is fully ventilated at all times. Ventilation requirements will be even higher for mines that are classified as gassy. As a result of these considerations, ventilation systems for room and pillar mines are generally designed to handle large quantities of air. But as mining progresses and the mine be- comes larger, greater demands will be placed on the ventilation system. To insure that adequate ventilation is maintained at these times, ventilation engineers must anticipate problems and plan how best to deal with them.

Electrolytic reduction followed by the addition of sulfuric acid and the application of heat can be used to selectively crystallize uranous sulfate from solution. This approach, when coupled with downstream thermal decomposition, forms the basis of a process for primary uranium recovery and purification where much of the sulfuric acid value can be recovered and recycled. In this process, a purified uranium (VI) leach solution is first electrolytically reduced to uranium (IV) in a membrane electrolysis cell. Sulfuric acid is then added to the solution which, in conjunction with the input of heat, causes the crystallization of uranous sulfate tetrahydrate. The precipitate is then dried and thermally decomposed to U3O8, which releases a mixture of high-purity SO2, SO3, oxygen, and water vapour. This gas can be recovered as sulfuric acid in an existing acid plant, processed through a new wet sulfuric acid process, or absorbed directly into the upstream electrolyte as a substitute for fresh acid in the crystallization step. This process has been shown to be practical, efficient, and cost-effective on the laboratory scale, and could be practiced on the industrial scale using commercially available equipment. This paper focuses on the thermal decomposition process and options for acid recovery.

BEFORE entering into the statistical part of this article, some general comments may be ln order. Each important war seems to introduce a new atmosphere and a new epoch. The Civil War led to the period of great interior development in North America, of the transcontinental railroads, and of large-scale manufactures. The first World War introduced the general use of the automobile, the building of a huge network of highways, the radio, and household engineering. Now I expect World War II also to introduce some new ways of living. Transocean aviation will become a commonplace; we shall probably have much more of an eye to our military and naval establishments and be more conscious of Eastern Hemisphere affairs instead of thinking so exclusively of the Western. Each war has also multiplied government expenditures and taxes; and to this rule the present one will certainly be no exception.

Others are associated more closely with the basic sciences, as for example, geological engineering or engineering physics. Still others tend toward the border line of business, such as administrative engineering or general engineering.

In several investigations the correlation has been studied between the fuel consumption and the reducibility of the charged material in the zone of indirect reduction in the blast furnace (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). It has been found that increased reducibility allows greater gas utilization which accordingly lowers the fuel consumption. In direct reduction units this relation has not yet been fully established partly owing to the lack of accurate test methods and experience with different materials as regards reducibility. However, since the production rate in a direct reduction unit is closely related to the time required to reach high degrees of reduction, the reducibility must be regarded as one of the most important properties of the material.

"Everyone has a general idea what mixing means, but describing the mixing process is not so simple. The objective of any mixing process is to distribute and blend the materials with different characteristics, different quantities as evenly as possible resulting in a homogenous mixture. Introducing proportional movement with the optimal intensity into the materials achieves effective homogeneous mixing results. A simple one directional movement with inadequate acceleration of the materials would obviously not achieve the same mixing results. This would be more like stirring than mixing. The amount of relative movement that is introduced is a decisive factor. Circumstances for successful mixing involve distribution of all materials, and achieving the highest probability that all recipe particles located in a specific position at the beginning can be found at any random location in the mixing chamber at the end of the process. This is the only way to ensure that a consistent result is achieved every time mixing is repeated.THREE-PART CYCLE The mixing cycle occurs in three phases; charging the mixer, the mixing process, and discharging. The sequence in which the individual materials to be mixed are filled into the mixer can have a huge impact on the efficiency of the mixing cycle. The mixing cycle overlaps the charging process and the discharge cycle follows the mixing cycle. To achieve optimum results, effective discharging methods should be taken into consideration to avoid risks of segregation. Costs for energy and wear should be as low as possible and finally, it is very important that the mixing cycle takes place as quickly as possible. In concrete or paste backfill production, selecting the best mixing technology is crucial for both the quality of the final product to be blended and the efficiency of the production process. The optimum mixing system is one that rapidly disperses all ingredients evenly throughout the mixing trough and completely surrounds all the course or fine aggregate particles with the slurry cement particles. Specific for paste production it’s the mixers job to also break-down unconditioned tailings to achieve consistent paste viscosity or measured spread. Many paste and concrete formulas also involve small quantities of chemical additives which also must be evenly distributed effectively. The time required per mixing cycle as well as the costs of energy, wear and maintenance will determine the economy of the concrete production."

This study investigates nickel laterite porosity and its impact on geometallurgical modelling. We performed a detailed mineralogical study on a set of Ni-laterite samples originating from New Caledonia. Samples were analysed after heavy liquid separation by automated SEM (QEMSCAN®). Laboratory and QEMSCAN® modelling results do not correlate well. Ideal physical mineral properties such as mineral densities used in QEMSCAN® modelling do not match the actual physical densities of minerals. The presence of empty or water-filled pores can represent important amounts in minerals and change the overall density of a particle. An adequate modelling of real density separation of minerals and particles should consider the water-filled pores. The first step towards a better simulation was to integrate pores larger than 10 μm in diameter filled with water (density of 1 g/cm3) in the QEMSCAN® database. The results approached, but did not match the physical laboratory results. The second step was to identify nanometer to micrometer sized pores, which could not be identified by QEMSCAN®. It was possible to identify nanometric pores in enstatite, Fe-oxides, serpentine, talc and quartz, and radial aggregates of fibrous Fe-oxyhydroxides with high resolution SEM (HR-SEM). The quantification of those micro-sized pores was performed on 2D HR-SEM images using image-processing techniques developed in Python to calculate the nanometer to micrometer scale pores in each mineral. Despite the limitation of converting 2D imaging into 3D objects, in our case pore sizes and porosities, we were able to calculate a mean value of porosity for each mineral. The integration of this porosity in the calculation of particle densities yielded a good match between the QEMSCAN® model and the laboratory experiment results. Despite the complexity of a strongly weathered material, such as Ni-laterites, a good knowledge of the ore makes it possible to build reliable processing models. Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, processing high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form, from the Cameco operated Cigar Lake mine. This slurry is ultimately processed into the purified uranium oxide product known as calcined yellowcake. During the calcining process, sulphate (SO42-) entrained in the yellowcake undergoes thermal decomposition into sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a colourless gas that poses health and safety risks. Since 2016, an anhydrous ammonia dosing system was successfully added to the existing Venturi particulate scrubber system to provide efficient removal of SO2 from the calciner off-gas. Within the pH controlled scrubber solution, SO2 exists in a pH dependent equilibrium with sulphite/bisulphite (SO32-/ HSO3-). The presence of a significant fraction of reduced sulphite and bisulphite in mill solutions presents a hazard in downstream circuits. Should these solutions drop in pH, either through natural oxidation or inadvertent mixing with low pH solutions, the solution equilibrium will shift from SO32-/HSO3- in favour of SO2, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas from any liquid surfaces. In 2018, Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) and Orano implemented a design change in the calciner scrubber system. Blowdown from this system is now treated in an oxidation pre-step utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3) for pH control, in order to convert the residual sulphite/bisulphite present in solution to stable ammonium sulphate product. This paper will detail some of the challenges and actions undertaken to minimize SO2 risk, culminating in the recent introduction of a novel system designed to oxidize sulphite/bisulphite and prevent mobilization from the calciner scrubber solution into other mill areas where there is the potential for acidification and SO2 release.

"The Carswell structure, located in the western part of the Athabasca Basin, northern Saskatchewan, has been extensively explored since 1967. This exploration has been successful and lead to the discovery, in 1970, of the D sandstone-hosted unconformity related deposit. By the end of 1984, five additional basement-hosted unconformity related deposits had been delineated: the OP and N discovered in 1970, the Claude in 1971, the Dominique-Peter in 1981, and the Dominique-Janine in 1984. The D deposit has been mined out; the Claude open-pit has already produced more than 500 tonnes of uranium, the development of the Dominique-Peter underground mine (first phase) has been completed, and production from the latter started in 1985.All six deposits are located in the southern part of the Aphebian metamorphic core, 18 km in diameter, which has intruded at least 1250 metres of Helikian Athabasca Group sediments during a cryptoexplosion event at 480 Ma, unrelated to the emplacement of uranium mineralization. The metamorphic rocks, affected by the Hudsonian Orogeny, are divided in two lithostratrigraphic units: the Peter River gneiss, aluminous gneiss series, and the Earl River complex, mixed quartzofeldspathic and mafic gneiss series. A well developed regolith profile is recognizable in the south along the contact with the sandstone and inside the metamorphic core sometimes associated with conformable sandstone beds.Basement and sandstone-hosted uranium deposits show many similarities:-linkage to unconformity;-mineralogy and geochronology with a first phase mineralization characterized by a polymetallic sulphide-uraninite-brannerite assemblage dated at 1150 to 1050 Ma, a second phase characterized by a simple sulphide-uraninite assemblage dated at 890 to 820 Ma, and a third phase characterized by a pitchblende-hematite dated at 380 Ma; and,-linkage to early Hudsonian structures with remobilization of these structures during intense hydrothermal alteration resulting in Mg chlorite-illite halos."
