Carbon sequestration in planted forests provides an immediately available, low cost option to address the greenhouse impacts of coal mining and coal utilisation in a carbon constrained world. In addition, planted forests also offer the opportunity to address other environmental issues, particularly salinity and loss of biodiversity. Given salinity is characteristically associated with agriculture in the 500 to 700 mm rainfall belt, then where such forests can also produce commercial timber products, they offer the additional opportunity to establish new, diversified rural employment in both timber growing and processing. In the majority of Australian catchments affected by salinity, where rainfall is generally less than the 700 mm limit to conventional forestry, and where groundwater reserves are often saline, the objective of achieving economically viable forestry production presents a significant challenge. In 1996, Saltgrow commenced a collaborative breeding program to combine the salt and stress tolerance of E camaldulensis, with the growth rate, stem form and wood properties of the commercial species, E grandis and E globules. This program aimed to produce trees with the potential for commercial rehabilitation of saline landscapes. Results covering a range of site conditions from SaltgrowÆs network of over 100 trials around Australia are presented. The opportunity for commercial plantations integrated with agriculture in low to medium rainfall areas to address salinity and sustainability will be discussed. In addition, the significant potential for partnerships between land-rich, cash-poor farmers, catchment management authorities seeking to invest in public good projects that enhance environmental sustainability, and major carbon producing industries with either mandated or voluntary requirements to curtail net emissions will also be discussed.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of southern Louisiana and southern Texas is the seventh in a series of preliminary chapters of a bulletin covering the producing districts of the United States. Preceding reports* may be obtained from the Bureau of Mines on request. The details of the methods used in this survey in collecting samples and making laboratory tests have been discussed in the first three papers. A method of summarizing and interpreting the laboratory data has also been given, but most of the crudes included in the present report differ so radically from those previously reported, that it has been found advantageous to adopt a somewhat different method in making summaries. This method is described in detail later. If any errors or omissions are noted by readers, it is hoped that these will be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, for correction before the appearance of the final bulletin.

In this work we assessed the geochemical behavior of concentrator tailings deposited at the abandoned mines of Zeida and Mibladen (Upper Moulouya, Morocco), using physico-chemical analyses, mineralogical characterization, acid base accounting and weathering cell tests. The aim of the study was to evaluate mine drainage quality and to assess metal mobility from these concentrator tailings. Chemical analyses show that the Upper-Moulouya abandoned tailings contain relatively high quantities of lead (0.261 to 0.594 % wt). Mineralogical analyses reveal the abundance of neutralizing minerals (calcite, dolomite, ankerite, and aluminosilicates) which influence mine drainage and metal mobility in mine tailings. Leachate analyses from weathering cell tests show alkaline conditions, small conductivity values, and low solubility of Pb-mineral phases. According to these results, abandoned mine tailings in the Upper-Moulouya district have very low potential for generation of contaminated mine drainage and for leaching of heavy metals. However, the inhalation of tailings exposed to winds generate dust problem facing the local population and may cause health consequences.

"The flow of molten metal entering complex two-dimensional foundry molds has been modeled using the Simplified Marker and Cell (SMAC) and Solution Algorithm (SOLA) techniques. The molds were for a series of four and three-spoke wheel designs. The computer calculations were compared to physical experiments in which molten cast iron was poured into C02-bonded sand molds. The metal was photographed with a high speed motion picture camera focused through a Pyrex glass window on one face of the mold. To get good agreement between the calculations and the experiments, it was necessary to accurately represent the velocity through the ingate. This was calculated by application of the Bernoulli equation to flow through the feed system. Some difficulties were experienced with mathematical instability, expecially in the three-spoke design with a narrow ingate. This was overcome by using 100% upwind differencing, and over relaxation parameter near 1.0 (i.e. no over relaxation), and variable mesh spacing.IntroductionModeling the flow of molten metal entering molds has the potential for making significant contributions to the design of feed systems. It will supply information to the computer-aided-design systems of the future that will enable the designer to optimize the placement of gates, dimensioning of passages, and designation of casting speeds. Such design criteria have generally been based on application of energy balance (Bernoulli equation) principles to flow in the sprues, runners, and gates. Indeed, this is the easiest way to determine the proper dimensions to give a suitable filling time for a casting of a given size. A number of computer programs, including one by some of the present authors, have integrated such calculations into CAD systems. l Modeling the flow of metal inside the mold cavity requires other techniques that will handle free-surface transient flow. Stoehr and Hwang reported on the application of the Marker-and-Cell (MAC) technique to mold filling problems at the previous conference in this series at Hennicker, N.H. in 1983. 2 Although considerable progress has been made since that time in improving the accuracy, stability, and convenience of these techniques, the shapes to which they were applied remained limited. Also, physical verification of the results of the calculations was limited to water models.The work to be reported in this paper was undertaken with two objectives: (1) to apply these techniques to more complex and realistic shapes, and (2) to verify the results by comparison with flow patterns observed in molten metal poured into actual sand molds."

Blast fragmentation, determined using image analysis was correlated to drill monitoring parameters in an open pit operation. Average fragment size and 80% passing size showed strong correlation with specific energy of drilling as well as with torque, while the same passing sizes did not correlate well with the rate of penetration. It was also determined that the uniformity of fragmentation decreases with the specific energy of drilling. Thus drilling monitoring parameters appear to be valuable in determining the blastability of the rock mass, enabling adjustment of blast loading to respond to changing conditions in the rock mass.

"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test®), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. It also outlines the results of field tests carried out by an objective third party mining group and compares the results with those from current industry standard tests conducted on the same material.Citation:Kojovic, T, 2016. The process of flotation separation and recycling of spent potlining (SPL) was described. On the basis of the laboratory investigations, the effects of influencing factors in froth flotation process, such as grain size, flotation agent dosage, pH value, pulp density, and dissolved components concentration, etc, were carefully studied. And the influence on environment of the process was also discussed. It was found that flotation separation can be used as an environment-friendly method for treatment of SPL residue. Carbon and other compounds (include cryolite, sodium fluoride, calcium fluoride and diaoyudaonite, etc.) from SPL were separated and recycled as flotation products respectively.

In September of 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) published final regulations that effect owners and operators of underground storage tanks (USTs). These regulation include stringent technical requirements for owners and operators of USTs containing petroleum and certain hazardous substances. The technical requirements effect both new (those installed after December 1988) and existing USTs and include notification; performance and operating standards; release detection, reporting, investigation; release response and corrective action; and closure requirements for out-of-service USTs. The USEPA also published final regulations regarding financial responsibility requirements for owners or operators of petroleum USTs in October of 1988. These regulations require owners or operators of petroleum USTs to demonstrate financial responsibility for the costs of corrective action and compensating third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by releases from petroleum USTs. Like thousands of other industries, the mining industry must become thoroughly familiar with these new regulations in order to properly manage their UST systems, ensure compliance, and understand other ramifications imposed by these regulations.

From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

The mineral suspensions do not present a newtonian behavior as their continuous phase; they can be pseudoplastic, dilatant, or both. The viscosity becomes as the most important rheological variable because the different industrial processes involve a wide variety of rheological scenes, with a specific rheological behavior for each one. Some authors have tried to model the viscosity of suspensions considering the volumetric fraction of solids and others have also kept in mind the size of the particles (Einstein, 1906; Batchelor, 1977; Jinescu, 1974; Krieger and Dougherty, 1959; Tangsathitkulchai and Austin, 1988). Others consider the shear rate (Cross, 1965; Hershel-Bulckley, 1926; Bingham, 1916, etc). However, none of the models is able to simulate the viscosity involving the physical, chemical and mechanic factors at the same time for crowded suspensions. A new model based on Neural Networks is presented, taking into account all the variables of ceramic clay suspensions and chemical additives. THE name engineer makes a very strong appeal to one who appreciates the mechanism underlying the fabric of our civilization. Engineers are scouts of civilization. We send them ahead into the lone 'places-the wilderness, the jungles, the great watery expanses, to build the highways necessary for civilized man. The engineers must deal with Nature, with that mysterious dynamic thing we call "force," with materials. It is their function to direct the human activity necessary to coordinate these forces and material in order to make them serve the needs and aspirations of men. Because of my high conception of the engineering profession I was glad to accept the invitation to address The American Society of Mechanical Engineers to voice my understanding of the possibilities of your work as engineers of industry, and to suggest what seems to me the responsibility of the-engineer to the whole modern industrial system.

A comprehensive flotation study has been carried out on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University. The results are compared with that of a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4-S% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity content than that produced by up to six stages when a conventional mechanical cell is used. The results also show that the packed column flotation process is particularly suitable for recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

A significant portion of Outotec's business relates to the application of fluidized bed for processing a wide range of industrial materials, including gold ore and gold concentrate. As part of the former Lurgi and Boliden organization, our division constructed the first industrial reactor for roasting sulphur-bearing materials in 1950, based on the principles of fluidized bed technology. This process, when combined with efficient heat recovery and off-gas treatment and its conversion to sulphuric acid, became the standard for processing sulphur-bearing ores. In the last 60 years we have delivered more than 265 plants and developed (in addition to the standard fluidized bed solution) variants of the fluidization technology, such as the circulating fluidized bed and the bubbling fluidized bed. This paper describes the different options of the fluidized bed technology for gold roasting reflecting on main process design criteria.

"The beneficiation and upgrading of pyrochlore from its ores is carried out through flotation. In industrial practice, upgrading is conducted in a two-stage flotation process in which pyrochlore flotation is carried out after gangue mineral pre-flotation (carbonate, silicate, sulphide or phosphate reverse flotation). In this study, the flotation of pyrochlore from a low grade carbonatite ore was performed at the laboratory scale following a two-stage flotation process in which carbonate minerals were floated in advance of niobium minerals. In parallel, a simplified flotation process was developed in which pyrochlore was floated directly from gangue minerals at increasingly acidic pH. Laboratory results indicated that both two-stage and direct flotation provided similar results in terms of niobium grade-recovery. Based on these results, a large scale, integrated pilot plant was conducted using a direct flotation flowsheet. While the elimination of reverse gangue flotation resulted in flowsheet simplification, the dissolution of carbonate minerals and the subsequent effect of dissolved cations on the floatability of pyrochlore added an element of complexity. A comparison of results from locked-cycle laboratory testing and pilot plant testing highlights the challenges of scaling up a complex flowsheet. A case is made for the direct flotation process and the key parameters to achieving success in large scale direct flotation of pyrochlore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore (Ca,Na)2Nb2O6(OH,F) is a niobium bearing mineral which has been the primary global source of niobium since the first pyrochlore mine commenced operations in the late 1960s (Gibson et al., 2015a). REVIEWING the events of the year in mineral industry education, a certain amount of either amusement or irritation, depending upon one's viewpoint, can be derived front the section dealing with mining engineering in Walter B. Pitkin's "New Careers for Youth" which appeared during the summer. On p. 102 Prof. Pitkin says "The mining engineer is disappearing .. . because . . . the profits of mining decline rapidly with the age of the mine." In his "Are Too Many Students Taking Mining Courses?" published in the May issue of this journal, W. B. Plank presents statistics showing that there was some decline in student enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses in 1932-3 and 1933-4, compared with 1930-31, but that the decline was proportionate to that in all lines of engineering study combined. Informal reports from Institute officials that have visited tinning schools during the fall indicate that nearly all schools showed an increase in enrollment for the current school year. Pre else statistics will be made available by Prof. Plank at the Annual Meeting. His study last year provided, for the first time, accurate and complete information on the enrollment in mining schools, as well as the number of various courses and the degree granted, and it will be interesting to have comparable figures for this year. Prof. Pitkin's views on the future opportunities for mining engineers were discussed at some length - on pages 439-4.40 of the November issue of MINING AND METALLURGY.

"The Reflux Flotation Cell (RFC) consists of an inverted fluidized bubbly bed, located above a system of parallel inclined channels. This novel arrangement enhances the hydrodynamics of flotation in a number of ways. Firstly, the free-surface of the flotation cell is enclosed via a fluidized bed distributor, ensuring uniform application of wash water to promote desliming. Secondly, foams can be variable in their stability and lack permeability. Hence this system is preferably operated in the absence of foam, instead opting for a bubbly zone of high bubble volume fraction through the use of a very high gas flux and/or wash water flux. Discharge of the product proceeds upwards through a central port of narrow cross-sectional area. Thirdly, the system of inclined channels increases the segregation between the bubbles and the water, ensuring the bubbly zone remains contained within the upper vertical zone, and the liquid flux reporting to the overflow is low. The expanded operating regime of the RFC was investigated by covering a very broad range of gas fluxes, up to 5.5 cm/s, and wash water fluxes, over 2 cm/s. Both laboratory and pilot plant performances were quantified by the recovery of hydrophobic particles and rejection of the hydrophilic particles, using model and industrial coal feeds. The new system hydrodynamics was found to offer significant advantages in flotation kinetics, desliming, and particle recovery across a broad particle size range. Bubble interfacial flux reached as high as 600 m2/m-2s-1. The upper system consists entirely of a high volume fraction of bubbles, which provides a "safety-net" to protect against the detachment of coarse particles, and a highly permeable zone for counter-current washing of the flotation product. Under relatively extreme conditions selective stripping of the product is observed, resulting in grade recovery values beyond those achievable using the tree flotation method."

"Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

"Cerium is the most abundant rare earth metal and is often found in deposits along with small amounts of more valuable metals such as neodymium and gadolinium1. As a result, the production of cerium oxide often exceeds market demands, thus in some cases it would make more sense to remove the cerium from the process solutions before further purification. A common method of cerium removal is to precipitate CeO2 from the acidic leach liquors by raising the pH to oxidize cerium(III) to cerium(IV). This study investigates the oxidation kinetics using three oxidants; hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, and potassium permanganate. The effect of oxidant, pH, cerium concentration and temperature on the oxidation kinetics will be discussed. Cerium oxidation in solutions with pH ranging from 1.0 to 4.0 was investigated at cerium concentrations ranging from 2.0 g/L to 16.0 g/L. A cerium recovery of 40% can be achieved at different conditions with each oxidant at room temperature, with higher recovery at 60°C.INTRODUCTION Over the last 70 years, the rare earth elements (REE) have become crucial components of modern technology. These metals are categorized as light rare earths (LREE) or heavy rare earths (HREE) by governments and miners based on weight, abundance, and therefore value. The minerals bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime compose the majority of the world?s exploitable sources of these metals (Binnemans, 2013; Parker and Baroch, 1971). Geologists classify the LREE ores as „cerium group? minerals, approximately 50% cerium oxide by weight. The cerium group minerals monazite and bastnaesite compose the majority of world production, leading to an overproduction of cerium relative to world demand. This ratio of light to heavy REE in deposits has led to a phenomenon referred to as the balance problem (Binnemans et al., 2013). As an example, to produce 1 tonne of europium oxide from a bastnaesite deposit 450 tonnes of cerium oxide must be processed. This means that any push to increase production and access the value of the HREE metals will drive down the value of the LREE metals leading to diminishing returns (Zepf, 2016). These ores also contain measurable levels of thorium, subjecting them to complex radioactive waste regulations. During the 20th century, the USA was the largest producer of rare earth metals (REMs), primarily sourced from the Mountain Pass mine in California. However, due to a combination of market dynamics and regulations, China has dominated the market for the last two decades. The largest Chinese REE mine, Bayan Obo, produces rare earth (RE) concentrate as a byproduct of iron mining, decreasing their relative production costs (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 2005). This mine alone represents about half of world bastnaesite production (Zhi and Yang, 2014). Rising demand for high-tech products has forced Chinese producers to commission other large mines, climbing to 90% of world production in the early years of the new millennium (Mancheri, 2016). This presents the west with a looming supply risk of these critical metals in the future."

THIS REPORT presents methods and principles useful in designing underground mine openings and pillars in competent rock formations. Two types of formations are considered: (1) Massive formations, in which openings are generally mined with an arched roof, and (2) bedded formations, in which openings are generally mined with a flat roof. Design principles for openings and pillars in massive formations are obtained by considering the maximum tangential stresses developed around single and multiple openings for stress fields of various types. Design principles for openings and pillars in bedded formations are obtained by considering the average stress in pillars and the maximum stresses in roof layers. Experimental procedures for making stress, strain, and in situ physical-property measurements in underground mines to check design calculations are outlined and the results discussed.

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."
