In due course, new smelters will have to be installed in order to meet the increasing worldwide demand for copper. This paper presents the results of a study made for the purpose of identifying the most desirable countries in the world in which to locate a new smelter. Both sociopolitical and economic factors were taken into account. Criteria developed and methods used to assess each possible location are described. The study indicated that the most interesting potential locations are Canada, -Chile, Portugal and the USA for new copper smelting complexes.

WHAT is written here features some of the things that I would say if I were to de- liver a Presidential address during the Annual Meeting to be held this month in New York. I am aware that custom favors written rather than vocal delivery of such a discourse; and, as this accords exactly with my own preference, I assure readers that they will never be called upon to hear these remarks spoken- anyhow, not by me. My year as President is drawing to a close. As I look back I like to classify and analyze the impressions that have been left with me. It has been a delightful and fascinating experience to me personally; I have appreciated the courtesies and aids, and have been deeply gratified at the honors accorded me. Perhaps the source of greatest satisfaction is the opportunity I have had to sense more about the provinces of this Institute and about the useful functions of the profession that it represents. For 38 years I have been a member. I served two terms as Director-one in 1914-'16 and again in 1927-'29. I have been honored by selection as a Saunders Medalist. I thought I was reasonably familiar with the functions, the ideals, and the activities of the Institute. But the things that I have discerned during the past year have dispelled that conceit. I still think that, a year ago, I was as well informed as most members; but since then I have had the rare privilege of executive service and insight. That has given me a perspective that I feel can be obtained in no other way-as I think the illustrious engineers who have preceded me in office will agree. I wish that I had the power to translate to every member somewhat of the feelings of pride in our organization that a year as President cannot help but instill.

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

The current commodities super-cycle has seen an explosion in the number of mining projects demanding human resources throughout the world. The demand for key personnel currently far outweighs the international talent pool and will take several years to subside. A highly effective project team can be the difference between a successful project and a bad public relations exercise. In Japan, the emission standard of selenium in effluent was set at a maximum of20 mgll in Feb. '94 for the first time, and it is scheduled to be further decreased to a maximum of 0.1 mg/I from Feb. '97 due to tightening of the Water Pollution Prevention Act. Selenium (IV) and (VI) are generally found in effluent from precious metals refineries. Although selenium (IV) can be easily eliminated by some reducing agents, selenium (VI) is more difficult to be reduced. Therefore, many smelters are having difficulty in complying with the new emission standard. At Mitsubishi Materials' Naoshima smelter, the behavior and the elimination of selenium in effluent have been extensively investigated. As a result, it was found that two strategies were particularly effective. One of them is improving the overall operation of precious metals refinery, that is, feeding uniformly the effluent to the waste-water treatment plant, reducing the effluent volume by recycling and recovering more selenium (IV) in the effluent. The other is eliminating selenium (VI) in the effluent from the precious metals refinery. It was found that selenium (VI) can be effectively reduced by using hydrazine under high? sulphuric acid concentration and high temperature conditions. By using these measures, it is considered that Naoshima Smelter will be able to comply with the new emission standard.

Blindagens contra armas de fogo são de grande importância para proteção do homem, no contexto atual de violência urbana e conflitos armados. Destacam-se os sistemas de blindagem multicamada (SBMs), constituídos por materiais diferentes, pelo seu bom desempenho e menor peso. Um SBM típico é constituído de uma camada cerâmica frontal, uma segunda camada de compósito e uma camada posterior de metal dúctil. Apesar de serem tipicamente fabricados em materiais sintéticos, uma alternativa é a utilização de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais como segunda camada. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a eficiência de SBMs que utilizam compósitos de poliéster com 30%vol. de fibras ou tecido de sisal. Foram realizados ensaios balísticos com munição 7,62 mm, e verificou-se que os SBMs com fibras e tecido de sisal se enquadram no critério da norma internacional (NIJ 0101.06), de resistir ao impacto balístico e imprimir deformação menor que 44 mm no material de referência (plastilina), além de manterem sua integridade após o impacto.

El sostenimiento con pernos de roca requiere de estudios que determinen cuáles son los factores que influyen en el proceso de acción recíproca entre la roca y sus elementos. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente trabajo es mostrar los resultados de las investigaciones realizadas, basadas en el principio de deformación y compresión sobre la roca en el mismo campo de trabajo. Para ello, es necesario considerar que el desconocimiento de las propiedades físico-mecánicos de la masa rocosa y de instrumentos de investigación, limita el estudio a la determinación del anclaje y la pérdida de tensión de los pernos.

A investigação do comportamento de um mandril com diferentes diâmetros ao longo de seu comprimento no forjamento incremental em matriz aberta de eixos vazados para aerogeradores é estudada. Tem-se por finalidade a fabricação de um mandril que se adeque à peça forjada e atinja o formato proposto. Através do uso de simulações numéricas computacionais com o software Simufact.forming 12, e simulações com o material modelo plasticina, possíveis geometrias de mandris foram estudadas, variando a angulação na região de troca de diâmetros ao longo do comprimento. Foram estudados ângulos de 0º, 30º e 60º, analisando o comportamento da fluência do material na região.

The '(author's edition" of the following paper, "subject to re vision," was received by him, and copies sent to Professor Geikie and others about two weeks before the date of the meeting at which it was to be read. A telegram, and subsequently a letter (both of which unfortunately arrived too late), apprised the present writer that the Director General objected to certain views ascribed to him as the reverse of those which he really held. These views, however interesting, had no very important bearing on the object of the fol lowing notes, which, as must be evident, are devoted to the conside ration of the close analogies between the Welsh and American rocks. Without being able, therefore, to account for the circumstance which Professor Geikie has mentioned, it is thought better in the present revised edition to omit all allusion to Professor Geikie, or Mr. Peach, or their views, except in this place, where I desire to thank them for their courtesy during the time which I had the pleasure of spending in their society. It appears sufficiently throughout the body of the paper that the writer had not the slightest intention of entering the controversy, which was about to commence, concerning the proper horizons of the St. David's rocks, for many reasons; and amongst others because he did not feel that a sojourn of a few days in a difficult region, which had been already studied by many of the foremost geologists of England, would warrant him in adding to the literature on the sub ject. The discussion of the analogies between these rocks and those of the Eastern Appalachians, which he has studied for twelve years, of which eight were spent in the service of the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, was much more to his taste as it was more within his ability, and if he has added anything to the evidence of these analogies, the paper, however imperfect, will not have been written entirely in vain. Right or wrong, he assumes the entire responsibility of what follows.

The McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, Canada, is operated by Orano Canada Inc. and has been in production for the last 20 years. The tailings preparation process at the mill has been designed with decommissioning in mind, to produce tailings that are geochemically stable over the long-term within the site’s tailings management facility. Twenty years of study have contributed to a detailed understanding of geochemical and geotechnical properties of the McClean Lake tailings. Validation of the tailings properties has occurred through in-situ sampling campaigns conducted initially every year, and later every five years. Each sampling campaign has applied the same rigorous sampling procedure to provide data with useful correlations year over year. Each campaign result compares elements such as the inherent variability of the tailings, consolidation of the tailings and variations in the tailings placement methods. We will discuss lessons learned from seven sampling campaigns over 20 years and present data to show the reliable tracking of geochemical evolution of the in-situ tailings over time; providing opportunities for continuous improvements.

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. A evolução microestrutural que ocorre durante o processo de laminação a quente pode ser modelada em termos dos tamanhos de grão da austenita e de suas frações recristalizadas ao longo dos passes. Este artigo apresenta uma metodologia que permite a análise da cinética de recristalização e precipitação durante a laminação, com base na composição química do aço e parâmetros do processo. Essa metodologia pode ser utilizada na criação de modelos computacionais. Neste trabalho, as simulações apontaram para a alteração do teor de Nb e da temperatura de reaquecimento da placa como solução para otimizar o processo, resultando em melhorias no produto, ganho de produtividade e redução de custos.

Chapa de desgaste revestida com metal duro tem ampla aplicação na indústria, principalmente no segmento de mineração. Usualmente, o revestimento é aplicado em chapas de aço de baixo carbono. Estes aços são os mais comuns devido à sua boa soldabilidade. Paralelamente ao emprego das chapas revestidas, foi desenvolvido um aço de baixo carbono e de elevada dureza (350 a 600HB), com a finalidade de se tornar uma boa opção como chapa de desgaste. Em função da escassez de informações técnicas quanto à aplicação de revestimento em chapas de alta dureza, este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a influência do ciclo térmico de soldagem sobre as propriedades mecânicas do aço Hardox® 450. A metodologia experimental consistiu no revestimento do aço Hardox® 450, com dureza da ordem de 450HB. Para o revestimento foi utilizado o processo de soldagem FCAW. Após a soldagem, foi feita análise do perfil de dureza na seção transversal dos corpos de prova. Para avaliação da resistência ao desgaste, foi feito o ensaio de abrasão conforme recomendações da norma ASTM G65-04. De acordo com os resultados obtidos foi possível confirmar que a aplicação do revestimento duro influencia diretamente nas propriedades mecânicas do material.

JUDGING by the progressive atmosphere prevailing in the nonmetallic mineral industries during the past year, postwar conditions were healthful though inflationary. Demand for most industrial mineral products has been exceptionally high and many new production records were attained. Severe shortages of some commodities existed, especially building materials and fertilizers. Production costs and prices increased and profitable operation was general. Under these conditions expansion programs were the order of the day. Ample funds were available to finance the purchase of good equipment; and, as wages and other operating costs were increasing, primary emphasis was placed on attaining maximum efficiency in new installations. These efforts were hampered by shortages and slow delivery of desirable equipment, so compromises in design were often necessary. However, on the whole, production practice improved.

The modified in-situ process is one of the methods being considered for extracting oil from oil shale. One of the questions to be answered for this approach is the environmental consequence of underground retort abandonment. This report outlines a study which addresses the question in terms of a grouting solution. It covers the development of a spent shale ash based grout which will fulfill the environmental requirements in terms of strength, stability, and impermeability. In addition, it will allow the reinjection of up to 50 percent of material mined and surface retorted as part of this process.

The use of a single pile, group of piles with pile cap, piled raft foundation system, etc., are prevalent in transferring the superstructure load from the soft soil layers to the firm underground layers to reduce the settlement and improve the bearing capacity. The recent development of disconnected piled raft foundation has gained greater importance in improving the load transfer mechanism among the pile, raft, and subsoil by reducing the vulnerability of the greatest axial force on the pile head which leads to pile failure. The present study aims at analyzing the performance of unreinforced and Geogrid reinforced disconnected piled raft foundations under vertical loading using the commercially available finite element software PLAXIS-3D. A parametric study was conducted on unreinforced and reinforced disconnected piled raft foundations to explore the effect of varying pile stiffness as well as the inclusion of Geogrid layer on the load vs settlement, the load sharing ratio of piles and raft, and the distribution of axial load and bending moment along the length of the pile. The Mohr-Coulomb model was used for the granular cushion layer while the Modified Cam Clay model was used for soft clay underlain the sand layer. Raft and piles were assumed to be rigid and linear elastic. The results showed that axial force taken by piles with higher stiffness was maximum while settlement at the bottom tip of the pile with higher stiffness was maximum in both reinforced as well as unreinforced disconnected piled raft systems.
