About 1973 the abrupt decrease in crude oil shipments due to political action by Middle Eastern suppliers, caused a shortage and a steep price rise. In response, Canada had to develop strategies of diminishing consumption and increasing production in both traditional and environmentally friendly resources. To clarify the situation in Canada, there are brief histories of energy (discovery, pipelines), manufacturing and science development, 1800-1970. Energy strategies, both nationally and in Quebec, succeeded in curbing consumption and in expanding production while fostering research in renewable sources. The industry-sector committees provided free exchange of conservation techniques through the federal energy ministry, with progress reports issued annually. Pipeline history in North America is reviewed along with manufacture and construction plans in Canada. Considerable success in all the aspects provided long lasting benefits, but after the embargo was lifted, many research initiatives were gradually abandoned for political reasons. Sustainability is the goal; society must conduct conserver analysis, legislation and action to enhance it.

"This paper discusses the unique design and construction circumstances of the cantilevered dual sheet pile walls and the Accordion Sheet Pile Wall for the repair and upgrade of the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel in Huntington Beach, California that was concluded in 2014. It also describes the 2008 Emergency Sheet Pile Project for the same channel. Both projects utilized the Press-in Piling Method for its low noise and almost no vibration advantages.BackgroundThe East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel is part of the Orange County Flood Control District (OCFCD) and is operated and maintained by OC (Orange County) Public Works (see Figure 1 for its location). The channel, referred to as OCFCD facility # C05 (C05), had suffered significant toe undercutting and slope erosion of its levee due to a series of storms. These began after the facility was constructed in the 1960’s and culminated in 2005. Consequently, the levee was deemed significantly deficient and was eventually declared as a local emergency in 2007. C05 was an incised channel and its levee was constructed primarily from native materials. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) personnel notified the design staff at OC Public Works to be aware of major consequences associated with the dilapidation problem in the most downstream reach of the channel in the vicinity of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Restoration Project. In 2007, the Orange County Board of Supervisors declared a local emergency to fix the levees with sheet piles to be driven by the Press-in Piling Method, hydraulic pushing piles into ground by holding onto previously installed piles. The project that ensued represented the first in-tandem use on the West Coast of the United States of the Press-in pile driver with its GRB System (Press-in pile driver, a support crane and pile transporter travel on top of already-driven sheet piles). This is further discussed in this paper in the sections titled “Press-in Piling Method” and “GRB System”, respectively. The project repaired approximately 3,800 feet of erosion on the north levee of C05 with 45-foot long cantilevered sheet piles. The sheet piles design constraints are discussed in this paper in the section titled “C05 2008 Emergency Sheet Pile Project (Phase 1)”. Between 2012 and 2014, another mile’s worth of levee reach was improved with the Soil-Mix-Sandwich (SMS) Method. This concept consisted of deep soil cement mix (DSCM) columns sandwiched within the dual rows of sheet piles. Additional details on the SMS, its DSCM construction, and its hybrid geo-structure design concepts are well beyond the scope of this discussion, which is primarily focused on sheet piles. Instead, the interested reader is referred to two papers on the SMS and its DSCM metrics (Fayad, 2015; and Arora, et al., 2015). These were presented and published in the Proceedings of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) 2015 Conference on Deep Mixing. Hence, in the section of this paper titled “C05 SMS Dual Sheet Piles Project (Phase 2)” only the sheet pile design constraints of the SMS are covered. Finally, in the area where the project traversed the Alquist-Priolo zone of the Newport-Inglewood tectonic fault, an expandable and deflectable sheet pile wall was used to isolate the flood channel from the Bolsa Chica wetlands. Its details are addressed in the section titled “C05 Accordion Sheet Pile Wall (Phase 2)” of this paper."

The use of drilling rigs to increasingly mechanize stope drilling has been acknowledged as important for the S.A. mining industry in it ís efforts to tackle the challenges of low productivity, AIDS and an ageing driller workforce. The spin-offs of increased safety, cost-effectiveness and better mining performance provide advantages to all?from the driller to the shareholder. However, implementation or product rollout has varied from outright success to dismal failure. A study of various cases by Novatek and Anglogold TDS showed clear reasons for these differences. Whereas the successes were characterized by clear objectives, accountability, user buy-in, a commitment to make the technology work and no-nonsense reporting, these were typically absent in failed implementations. The attitude at unsuccessful mines was to ?trial? the equipment?even subconsciously, a ?trial? is a test where failure becomes an acceptable outcome. During the study it became clear that mining management are not adequately trained to manage the often-tricky rollout process. They are often also not empowered or clearly mandated to deal with the organizational, human and technical issues that must dovetail to create a success. The output of the study was to develop a basic rollout process that could be used to formally manage the implementation of new drilling technology. Creating an alignment between the mine, workforce and supplier promotes a win-win situation that will not otherwise spontaneously arise.

Unknown geotechnical conditions are a major source of risk. Unexplored places vastly outnumber the sampled and tested ones, and widely spaced boreholes with intermittent tests and samples are the norm. Sometimes site-specific planning and thought goes into locating these special, tested places, such as basing them on the geologic understanding or anticipated key locations for the structure; more often they are simply evenly distributed. We demonstrate a holographic model that allows viewers to see real data in real space, scaled or not, and to visualize where measurements are taken, what those values are indicating, and where there exists more unknown and more risk. The holographic model shows in an intuitive way, values from Standard Penetration and Cone Penetration tests, and surface geophysics. The mixed reality of this future is that a wide audience – owners, designers, project managers, contractors, and stakeholders interact together in a real space where they see and talk to each other, while at the same time are individually looking all around below or above ground, like a gopher, in a virtual one. Risk in the future will be better managed through more thoughtfully designed investigations and better communication of 3D data in a world of augmented reality. INTRODUCTION This paper explores the use of augmented reality to convey understanding of the subsurface conditions of a bridge site. This is in contrast with the current state of practice where this information is contained in a geotechnical report, and the ideas are also applicable to other structures, earthworks, and excavations. “Augmented reality” describes a situation where a 3D holographic model is displayed for users in such a way that the users experience both the model and the real environment of their setting- such as at a desk, in a meeting room, or in an open space at a project site (Figure 1). The 3D holographic model is used to directly visualize underground features, to see through the earth to the actual locations where explorations are made, samples are obtained, or measurements are taken, design values are assigned, or construction is planned. The Silica (SME) Technology has been utilized on three separate projects focusing upon the stabilization of mercury-contaminated materials: at the Mother Lode Mine in Oregon, the Sulfur Bank Mercury Mine in California and at a former chloralkali plant in British Columbia. Each of the projects relied primarily on the results collected via EPA Method 1311 TCLP, with additional tests such as SPLP, humidity cell tests and other supporting tests employed as well. Both technical and economic performance of the silica-based technology was evaluated as well as that of competing technologies in some cases. Results established that in each of the three projects an SME chemical dosage rate of 3% chemical by weight of soil/sludge was the optimal ratio required to achieve project treatment objectives, TCLP test results exhibited a reduction in the leachable mercury from the treated materials ranging between 75% and 99% as compared to untreated material, satisfying the technical objectives for each project, Project costs ranged from $l5.00 - $18.26 per metric ton.

AN acute current shortage of copper, with the prospect that conditions may become worse, indicated by Office of Production Management information. Present estimates of copper requirement for defense indicate that nearly all the available metal will be required in the future for this purpose. Severe dislocations are, expected, but the objective is to distribute the copper available for civilian use in such a manner as to minimize these dislocations. The advisory committee on metals and minerals has been asked for a suggestions which may be helpful in meeting this situation.\

INTRODUCTION A major segment in a successful heavy equipment maintenance and repair program is the provision of well-laid out and well-equipped shop and service facilities The facilities described here will be those required for a large, high tonnage hard rock open pit mine utilizing rotary drills, shovels, haulage trucks, support equipment, and service trucks. The term support equipment covers the equipment required to support the drill, shovel, and truck operations, these are crawler tractors, road graders, front-end loaders, water trucks, rollers, rubber-tired tractors, etc. Service trucks are the automotive type consisting of rubber-tired over-the- road equipment. The primary structures generally involved in the total maintenance effort are as follows. (1) the main shop with an attached warehouse (the structure could also house the tire and lube shops plus the equipment cleaning stalls), (2) a service station with bulk petroleum product storage tanks, (3) a heating plant, (4) a security station (lf this is a corporate requirement), (5) operating department and employee assembly buildings, and (6) an electrical substation. Under certain conditions, many of these facilities with the exception of the substation could be combined In one or several structures. This arrangement could have a great advantage especially in areas where the heating of the structures is extremely critical.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

A conceptual approach to the bioremediation of uranium mill tailings (UMT) is presented., This approach focuses on, biosorption to remediate the. effluent solution and bioleaching remediate the. solid fraction. Comparative biosorption studies were performed with synthetic single metal solutions using a commercially available biopolymer. The maximum rate of metal sorption by calcium alginate was found to be 5.43, 6,39, 6.48, and 9.74 mg dm-3 min-1 for U022*, Ba2+, Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively. Activation energy (AEa) for barium uptake by calcium alginate beads was determined to be 11.5 kJ, indicating a diffusion controlled reaction mechanism. Thermodynamic values (AG+ AH+ and ASt) of the metal-alginate activated complex, as reported in the literature, were found to be in agreement with those calculated from this research. Results show that this biopolymer can be effectively applied in the removal of select metals prevalent in uranium mill tailing effluents and associated waste streams.

The epizonal Ag-Pb-Zn vein deposit at San Bartolome is characterised by a base-metal sulphide assemblage containing the spectacular development of interpenetrating, bladed networks of pyrrhotite which have been replaced by marcasite and pyrite. A similar assemblage displaying the same crystal habits and textures are also a diagnostic feature of the Sn and SnAg deposits ofBolivia. On this basis, it is reasonable to conclude that both deposits were formed from fluids of similar nature and origin. Although no economic accumulation of Sn is known in San Bartolome, further comparison of the geologic setting, age, mineralogy, fluid inclusion data and magmatic association of this deposit with the Bolivian systems has highlighted additional similarities consistent with a hypothesis that more extensive Sn mineralisation might exist in the San Bartolome area.

"Over the last 10 years, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has had a very active program of replacing many major bridges, large structures spanning the Mississippi River. The deep foundations for these new structures include both drilled shafts and large diameter open-ended driven steel pipe piles. Most of these projects included load tests, both axial and lateral.The geology of this area of Minnesota includes some interesting foundation challenges, including highly organic and compressible very soft silts and clays to very dense sand and gravel overlying sedimentary bedrock. In some cases scour requires embedment into rock, and the bedrock formations may range from very soft sandstone to very hard dolostone. Artesian groundwater conditions can sometimes complicate drilled shaft construction, but the rock is otherwise very favorable for drilled shafts. Experience with the open-ended driven steel pipe piles (typically 42 and 48 in, 1.07 and 1.2 m diameter) suggest that these piles most often penetrate even dense granular materials to achieve bearing on rock. Experiences with drilled shafts socketed into the soft sandstones demonstrate that these rocks provide very favorable conditions for drilled shafts, so long as suitable construction practices are followed. Here we present several recent case histories regarding the foundation design and construction of major bridge projects in the vicinity of Minneapolis, Minn., including the Wakota Bridge, the I-35W replacement, the Lafayette Bridge, the Hastings Bridge and the St. Croix Bridge. Some lessons learned from construction and load testing of both types of foundations are described along with implications for design in similar soil and rock conditions."

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

CURTAILMENT of the mineral industry as a whole undoubtedly will follow world peace, but the output of certain minerals should pursue a course well above the average on any curve of probable output projected beyond the trends exhibited through 1939. Without speculating on industrial conditions in the pending recomversion period, demand for fluorspar should be greater than before the war because of these factors, introduced by or resulting directly from military necessity: (1) Discovery and development of new deposits. (2) Improved technology in benefication. (3) New and expanded uses for fluorspar and its derivatives. The steel industry has been and continues to be the greatest consumer of fluorspar, and it wag largely to meet the wartime needs for steel that the domestic fluorspar industry has been expanded so greatly. Not only were the search for and development of new deposits of this mineral considered esstinal but the marginal nature of some of the,c- domestic deposits made it necessary to improve mineral dressinc and processing techniques to utilize them

A two-stage froth flotation technique was developed in the laboratory to separate fine-size pyrite from coal. The process consists of the initial flotation of a 15-percent solids coal slurry with a minimum of frother; the coarse, free pyrite and other refuse are removed in the tailings. The froth product from this first stage is then repulped and treated with a coal depressant, a pyrite promoter, and a frother to float the remaining fine-size pyrite or pyrite attached to coal particles. With the two-stage process, the pyritic sulfur content of a Lower Freeport bed coal sample was reduced from 1.78 percent to 0.75 percent in the first stage, and from 0.75 percent to 0.27 percent in the second stage with good clean coal recovery.

Manganese nodules on deep ocean floors have continuously received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and relatively higher metal concentrations (Mero, 1965; Cronan, 1980). Several registered Pioneer Investors have already identified promising sites in deep-sea regions for manganese nodule mining (ISA, 1998), and appropriate mining technologies have been developed during the last thirty years by the international consortium and several nations (Welling, 1981; Kaufman et al., 1985; Bath, 1989; Charles et al., 1990; Yang and Wang, 1997; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998; Hong and Kim, 1999; Muthunayagam and Das, 1999). The mining feasibility for manganese nodules, including an economic evaluation, has been examined in detail by some researchers (Andrews et al., 1983; Hillman and Gosling, 1985; Charles et al., 1990; Soreide et al., 2001).

Recent major floods have inundated Historic Ellicott City, Maryland, resulting in loss of life and property damage. Howard County, Maryland, has developed the Ellicott City Safe and Sound Plan to mitigate the risk of flash flooding in the Historic District, including a proposed stormwater conveyance tunnel. Challenges to overcome include thick zones of saprolite along the alignment, multiple near-surface structures, and minimal rock cover under an active railroad, while minimizing impacts to the public and historic structures. The project will also pursue recognition through the ISI Envision verification process.

An incremental analysis based stope design optimization method was developed at Exodus, an underground project located 30 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Traditional underground stope design methods, by manually drawing stope shapes, are typically very time-consuming and lacking of consistency and accuracy. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named '3D Incremental Analysis based Stope Optimization' was created for mine wide stope designs at Exodus. With this unique but practical method, multiple options of mine designs were completed within a short period time, which allowed us to select the optimal cutoff grade and best stope design option for the project.

Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. "The Siscoe gold mine is ranked as the fourth largest mine in the history of the Val d' Or mining district with a total production of 27.4 tAufrom1929 to 1949. Most of the gold mineralization occurred in quartz veins, hosted in a small (.69 km2) intrusion of altered quartz gabbro known as the Siscoe stock. The southern contact of the Siscoe stock is crosscut by a major shear zone (the ""K"" zone) trending 295/80 NE and from which gold mineralization was also exploited within the limits of the stock. Field and petrographic observations of the Siscoe stock combined with chemical analyses of major, trace and rare earth elements of the stock and its volcanic host rocks (Dubuisson Formation) suggest that:The Siscoe stock comprises four alteration facies formed from a homogeneous precursor: 1) the actinolite - Mg-chlorite facies, characterized by low FeOt,Na2O andTiO2 , and highAlp3 and MgO; 2) the albite- Fe-chlorite facies, containing high concentrations of FeOt and Nap; 3) the Mg + Fe-chloritefacies, which is transitional between the actinolite- Mg-chlorite and albite- Fe-chloritefacies; 4) the carbonate-chlorite facies, which consists of rocks that were subjected to extreme hydrothermal alteration, is spatially associated with mineralized veins and part of the K-zone. The first three facies are depleted in SiO 2, CaO and Au, and enriched in MgO, relative to fresh rocks of the Siscoe stock and the equivalent rocks of the Dubuisson Formation.Hydrothermal fluids introduced mainly along the K-zone ""channelway"" induced three types of element remobilization, resulting in the various alteration facies: 1) redistribution of elements within the stock from one facies to another (e .g., FeOt, Nap, Ti02 migrated from the actinolite- Mg-chlorite facies to the albite- F e-chlorite and Mg + Fe-chlorite facies); 2) remobilization of elements from the intrusive rocks into veins (e.g ., SiO 2 and CaO ); 3) introduction of elements by hydrothermal fluids in rocks of the Siscoe stock (e .g., Al2O3, MgO, H2O, CO2 and FeOt).The Siscoe stock and the Dubuisson Formation form part of the same tholeiitic suite. Similarly, the Bourlamaque batholith and the Val d'Or Formation belong to a single calc-alkaline suite. In view of this relationship, dissimilarities between the petrochemistry of the Siscoe stock and the Bourlamaque batholith suggest that the two intrusions are not co-magmatic.Finally, gold may have been leached from rocks of the Siscoe stock and remobilized into the quartz-carbonate mineralized veins. In order to account for the total production at the Siscoe mine, approximately 1.2 km3 of the Siscoe stock is thought to have been partially leached of its gold."
