Pima Mining Co., managed and 50% owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., with Union Oil of California and Utah Construction and Mining Co. sharing equally in the remaining 50%, is a medium-sized open pit copper mine situated in the very active Twin Buttes mining district, 22 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. In 1965, a three-part paper described Pima's growth from 3,000 tpd (tons per day) in 1957 to 18,000 tpd nine years later. Within months of the completion of the last stage of this sixfold expansion, studies were being wound up on a further major expansion, this time to 30,000 tpd. This expansion is now a reality. Details of the enlargement of the crushing and concentrating plant have already been covered in a recent paper, and the present paper will cover pit engineering studies, equipment selection, and current operating practices. Key factors in top management's decision to go ahead with the latest expansion were: (1) a substantial increase in ore reserves coupled with an appreciable decrease in grade, (2) a generally favorable outlook for copper prices, and (3) better than expected performance by mine and mill equipment purchased for the expansion to 18,000 tpd. For the pit design studies, particular attention was paid to pit stability, a problem area at times in the past, and to the location and grades of the final ramp systems. In drawing up the long-term mining schedule, the attitude of the ore, with the higher grade material lying deeper, was a critical factor and considerable stockpiling of lower-grade material in the early years had to be accepted in order to keep the annual grades close to the average of the orebody. The expansion called for major purchases of mine equipment in order to gear up the mine for delivery of 30,000 tpd to the concentrator. Mine closure planning integrated into life-of-mine (LOM) planning during the operational phase consists of many subcategories. One of these subcategories that needs to be fully integrated into the LOM planning is that of water management planning. Issues arise when mine water management infrastructure, which is required post-mine closure, is only considered closer to the end of LOM. Once the mine is closed monitoring is focused on water quality as an indicator of closure performance, hence inadequate upfront post-mining water management planning or integration into operations will result in environmental harm. The lack of considering post-mining water management is not uncommon in LOM planning. Poor mine site water management and planning are a wide reaching problem for the mining industry. Numerous active mines have been issued with environmental notices and penalties for contaminated water discharge; including issues with abandoned mines now being cared for by governments all over the world.Mitigating sources of water contamination caused by existing and closed mine sites that are leaching pollutants might be impractical, due to inaccessibility to the contaminants or final landform topography. The opportunity to consider and introduce post-closure required mine water management infrastructure is lost once the waste facilities are constructed. Mitigating contamination is made more problematic with mines located in remote areas, serviced by dedicated roads, water supply, electrical supply, etc. It is expected that these services will be decommissioned or drastically reduced, once closure is reached making remedial work much harder. Inadequate planning, to ensure access and easily maintainable water management infrastructure, could lead to erosion and contamination going unnoticed. There are numerous examples of poor mine water management practices in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. In the United States more than 23 000 km of streams are affected by pollution sourced from some 50 000 abandoned or mature mine sites (DeGraff, 2007).CITATION:Boshoff, H J J, ?2014. The value of iron ore depends on the grade of the contaminants. Scheduled iron, and the associated contaminants, provides mine planners with a measure of stockpile feed and blending requirements. Blending at the stockpiles is one approach to optimising iron grade, while minimising the variability of contaminant grades. These schedules are typically based on resource models incorporating geology and iron and contaminant grades. Resource models reflect best estimates of trends for each of the elements rather than the potential variability, which is critical for accurate short-term blending. Conditional simulation provides a tool to describe the likely variability of each element. Only recently has conditional simulation technology allowed the inherent correlation between elements to be incorporated into the process. This paper presents the stepwise co-simulation process used to simulate and describe multi-element variability for effective mine planning. A case study using the multi-element conditional simulation and the subsequent uncertainty in the schedule and stockpile planning is presented. This process supports proactive mine planning to minimise unexpected fluctuations in the final product.

"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. Alveolar macrophages (AM) exposed to cytokines or bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produce the free radical nitric oxide (NO·) by an inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). They also release reactive oxygen free radicals following exposure to silica dust. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether NO· is produced by rat AM and/or recruited leukocytes following the intratracheal (IT) instillation of silica. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (175 to 225 g) were IT instilled with either silica dust (10 mg/100 g body wt) or LPS (0.25 mg/100 g body wt). After 24 h, bronchoalveolar lavage cells (BALC) and lavaged lung tissue were assayed for iNOS mRNA. Cell counts of BALC and iNOS-dependent (Nw-nitro-Larginine methyl ester [L-NAME]-inhibitable) chemiluminescence generated by AM were also determined. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the steady-state levels of BALC iNOS mRNA were significantly increased by 3-fold following IT silica and by 7-fold following IT LPS. Partially enriched fractions of either AM or leukocytes from silica-treated rats both exhibited significantly elevated iNOS mRNA in Northern analysis. iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence was significantly increased in AM by 36-fold following IT silica and by 89-fold following IT LPS. Differential counts of BALC showed that AM numbers did not change in any of the treatments; however, red blood cells increased by 30-fold following IT silica and by 23-fold following IT LPS. Total leukocytes (polymorphonuclear leukocytes plus lymphocytes) increased by 58-fold following IT silica and by 274-fold following IT LPS. The results demonstrate that AM and neutrophils iNOS steady-state mRNA levels, AM iNOS-dependent chemiluminescence, and lavagable red blood cells and leukocytes all increased following IT silica. These findings suggest that NO· production in rat AM and neutrophils is increased in response to silica. NO· has the ability to then combine with superoxide and form a highly reactive toxic species, peroxynitrite, which may be responsible in part for silica-induced lung damage.

Underground mining in the gold industry is gaining popularity in Nevada, and with it the use of cemented rockfill is becoming mainstream. Even with today?s high metal prices, however, mining companies are very sensitive to the margins they realize, and are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs or improve efficiencies. Given that the backfill is one of the largest cost centers in underground mining, mines are constantly under pressure to reduce backfill costs. This paper will present an overview of the factors that impact cemented rockfill quality in Nevada mines based on the authors many years of consulting experience. Cemented rockfill quality can be linked directly to binder consumption, hence programs aimed at improving quality generally result in lower binder costs, better performance in the fill (hence less dilution), and improved safety. The paper will conclude with the key elements of a comprehensive program of backfill quality assessments and backfill QA programs. Comparative laboratory and minesite data from a number of operating and proposed mines will be presented.

THE Workmen's Compensation Ace defines Silicosis as "a fibrocic condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust sufficient co produce a lessened capacity for work". This fibrocic condition muse exhibit a specific appearance in the X-ray picture of the chest-an appearance which is not characteristic of several lung conditions which can cause lessened capacity for work and which are not due co silicosis. The layman is sufficiently familiar with this subject co know chat, as far as our knowledge goes, quartz is one of the principal objectionable factors in the production of this condition. He should also know that silicosis respects neither geographical nor industrial boundaries. It is as much a factor in some industrial processes (e.g. foundry work, sandblasting) as it is in mines handling ores containing quartz. Its development co a recognizable stage is usually a matter of many years. As yet, its cure is unknown. Its prevention is possible in varying degrees. The layman should also know that the development of fibrosis may be accelerated by breathing in, or living in, any atmosphere containing dust. Few normal adults, particularly those above a certain age, have clear lungs, and fibrosis in varying degrees is noted in the farmer, the steel worker, the clerk, and many others in varied occupations. It is not restricted to miners. Medical and industrial journals, and at times the press, are crammed with data pertaining to this subject, much of which is misinformation. This is particularly true of certain !laces where the preventive and compensation measures for the good o those earning their livelihood in an industry in which silicosis may be contracted are not so far advanced as in our own Province. A great many of these publishings are alarming to the layman. They leave him with the impression that he is taking his life in his hands if he elects to work underground, particularly in a gold mine-that he has at once sold his heritage of health and chat sooner or later he will succumb to the ravages of this ailment. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, under present conditions in Ontario mines, a very small percentage of the men employed ever become impaired by silicosis to the extent chat they must withdraw from the industry. I propose to tell you briefly something of this subject as it affects our mines.

Coal and coal mining is no longer the mighty king of industry and in our daily lives and homes that it once had the privilege of commanding. Many of you will remember that one of the chores of your youth was to bring in the scuttles of coal, morning and night, to feed the heater or stoke the furnace in the morning and bank it at bedtime. Growth of gas and oil have displaced coal in home furnaces and commercial buildings, and have taken over some segments of industrial markets. The coal burning locomotives have virtually disappeared in favor of the more efficient diesel engine. However, coal as a prime mover still holds its strategic position as is evidenced by act that the electric power industry almost entirely depends upon coal for its generation.

Este trabajo presenta un modelo de simulación dinámica para validar resultados obtenidos de un ciclo de minado en una mina subterránea, con la finalidad de que modelos complejos sean construidos rápidamente y con precisión, de manera que se reduzcan costos de estudios en las fases de proyecto y se posibiliten reducciones considerables en los costos de implementación y operación del emprendimiento. En esta simulación dinámica, que se realizó con el software Arena, se tuvo cuatro escenarios; cada uno con un grupo de equipamientos (Scoop, Jumbo, Bolter, Jackleg, personal cargador de explosivos). Se utilizó como herramienta computacional el MiniTab para realizar pruebas de normalidad para cada operación unitaria y calcular las distribuciones estadísticas para cada proceso del ciclo de minado (ventilación, desatado de rocas, acarreo, sostenimiento, perforación y carguío). Esta metodología permitirá un mejor planeamiento al utilizar mejor los recursos de equipos y personal en base a los KPI de mantenimiento de los equipos en mina, a la vez que se utilizan indicadores tales como MTBF, MTTR y confiabilidad (%).

CONDITIONS at the properties of the Consolidated Coal Co. had reached a point where improvements were almost impractical. The mines, sunk years ago, had shafts and entries so small as to preclude the use of large mine cars. A radical change was necessary in the type of mining and also in the type of mine to accommodate such haulage units. After due consideration, the company decided to enter the field of trackless mining, utilizing belt conveyors and chain-flight conveyors, the belt conveyors to take the long haul, and the chain-flight conveyors to be used for gathering. It was decided not to sink a shaft, but to drive a slope on an inclination of 17 1/2°, which the company believes to be about the limit on which coal can be carried on a belt without rolling back unduly.

The apparent small effect of skimming on desulphurization is somewhat misleading because the data was collected during the first months of use on the skimmer. During this period of time, the operators were, of course, just learning to use the equipment and, consequently, in many cases a so-called skimmed heat may have only been partially skimmed. In addition, during this period, the percentage of sulphur in the blast furnace slag was gradually increasing because of the increasing oil injection rates being employed at the blast furnace. An additional factor that cannot be disregarded is the apparent slower slag formation rate obtained in the BOF when the blast furnace slag is removed. This is evidenced at our shop by a much stronger tendency toward sparking and related lance skulling problems with deslagging, in spite of satisfactory manganese levels in the hot metal. Naturally, slower slag formation could account for poor desulphurization which would partially offset the beneficial effect of a lower sulphur input.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. "The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

In the last decades, the Chilean copper mining and metallurgical industry have had to modify their technological processes to meet the environmental regulations implemented by the Chilean government, and also to support the pressure of the public opinion. Thus, air quality standards for sulfur dioxide and particulate matter (primary and secondary), plans for reducing emission of arsenic by the Chilean copper smelters, effluents discharge limits, among others regulations were applied by the environmental agency. Additionally, agreements on cleaner production were carried out by mining sector and government. Now, a draft law on mine closure, and another on environmental mining wastes (abandoned mines) are being discussed by the authorities and the mining sector. In the context, production and environmental impacts in different ways to produce copper in the Chilean mining industry are reviewed and regulatory tendencies as well as abatement technologies today used are exposed and discussed in this presentation. Pyro, hydro and electrometallurgical processes employed and their current effluent and contaminants are presented showing various alternatives of treatment in the copper industry. An update of regulations established in Chile vis a vis copper production, with an especial attention to mine closure are also presented.

"The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."

"The design of conveyor belting for use in mines poses problems to the manufacturer that are unique. The challenge to be met is that of the production of a conveyor belt which can withstand use and misuse in an environment that may differ vastly from one country to another, and even between one mine and its neighbour.The development of a product to meet such varying requirements necessitates a protracted program of trials, both in the laboratory and in the field; a new successful development, the only criterion, can be said to have been achieved only after very long-term usage under actual, deliberately chosen, arduous mining conditions.New developments in conveyor belt construction can never stop, no more than can developments in new and advanced mining techniques. A new problem is set-an answer must be found. Some of the problems are noted here, and answered where possible, in what must after all be little more than an excursion into a very comprehensive and detailed subject."

During the past quarter century, coal mine geologists have evolved from providing a qualitative description of drill core and coal reserves into quantitative geotechnical specialists who bridge the gap between geology and engineering. In the late 1970?s and early 1980?s, hazard prediction mapping was in its infancy. At best, hazard maps identified rudimentary structures and conditions such as stream valley locations, sandstone/shale transition zones, and lineaments. A ?technical disconnect? had existed between geologists and mining engineers as each profession operated largely independent of each other. Engineers did not readily integrate geology and geologic conditions, with the exception of coal thickness, into mine planning. Geologists were relied upon for reserve estimates and did not participate in mine planning or design. The employment and market slump of the 1980?s and 1990?s combined with mining more challenging reserves mandated that this gap be bridged and forced geologists to learn to speak more ?numerically? to engineers so they could be understood. The purpose of this paper is to describe the procedures and thought processes used by coal mine geologists when determining various mineability and reserve extraction feasibility issues. The paper will also address underground geologic hazard mapping and prediction techniques. To achieve these objectives, the opinions and experiences of leading coal mine geologists, geotechnical and strata control specialists across the United States were solicited.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.
