Experience has shown that, since the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, over-compaction of spoil during the reclamation process has severely limited tree growth on reclaimed land. Researchers at the University of Kentucky have conducted a ten-year investigation at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky that monitored the changes in selected spoil physical characteristics for various reclamation and compaction alleviation methods. More specifically, research plots were developed for reforestation that employed three different levels of compaction and two different methods of ripping for overly compacted spoil. Each year measurements were made in the field of dry bulk density, using a nuclear density gage, and maximum penetration depth, using a recording cone penetrometer. In addition to good correlation between tree growth and selected spoil characteristics, the data demonstrated a gradual convergence of the measured spoil characteristic data over the study period.

This paper describes a case history of geochemical prospecting. An area of known mineralization was available for an orientation survey which led to the selection of elements and criteria for a reconnaissance survey in the area offsetting the known mineralization. Certain anomalies were found which were then made subject of confirmation sampling and of rock geochemical investigations. Inasmuch as the geochemical prospecting technique specifically led to a detailed area which now serves as a target for drilling and other exploration efforts, the geochemical prospecting part of the program is considered successfully concluded and, therefore, reported on here. Whether the target area will turn out to host the deposit or not is, of course, of utmost importance to the Company, but is of less importance to this paper. We will describe the concepts, the planning, the execution, the analysis and the interpretation of this typical geochemical prospecting case. A number of people on the staff of International Oil & Gas, Inc. have participated in this prospect, as have students from Southeast Missouri State University and their professor, Gary M. Lowell. In addition, the Missouri Geological Survey has been most helpful with records and letters on the century-old prospecting and mining in the general area. Many valuable discussions have also been held with geologists from the industry who, from time to time, have visited the area, examined the property and reviewed the status of the project. The support and interest from all these parties has made it possible to pursue and expand this exploration concept from one of being just "more of the same kind" to the most chal-1enging and exciting with which this author has ever been involved, namely the prospect for tin porphyry deposits in the mid-continent United States.

"Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open-pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as laser scanning (LiDAR) and photogrammetry surveying devices have become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely and safely, rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing. This article specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. Point clouds. The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open-pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Fig. 1).LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device.Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles and even in a mobile backpack shown in Fig. 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds,” but this article does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility."

"INTRODUCTION The wartime demand for iron ore and alloy steel on the west coast revived interest in iron reserves in western United States and Alaska. Magnetite was known to have been the most abundant metallic mineral at some of the old copper mines on Prince of Wales Island. In the summer of 1942, the Bureau of Mines began a program of preliminary investigation followed by core-drilling two magnetite deposits on the island.The Poor Man iron deposit on Kasaan Peninsula, Prince of Wales Island, Southeastern Alaska, was examined in August 1942 by Robert L. Thorne, associate mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, and John C. Reed and B. N. Goddard, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey in September 1942 the area was mapped geologically and a magnetic survey was made by the Geological Survey. In October and November 1942, a more thorough preliminary examination, which included cleaning out and sampling old adits and trenches, was made by thesenior author, Robert L. Thorne, and Aner W. Erickson, engineers of the Bureau. J. G. Shepherd, a consultant of the Bureau, spent two weeks in March and April 1943 investigating the Poor Man and other deposits on Kasaan Peninsula. Core drilling was completed in June 1943.L. A. Warner, of the Geological Survey, examined all cores and interpreted structural data revealed by the drilling."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. More than 11 Moz of Au and 50 Moz of Ag have been produced from epithermal deposits in New Zealand, almost entirely from 50 deposits in the Hauraki goldfield. Since the 1980s, new deposits have been discovered at Waihi (Favona, Trio, Correnso) and nearby at Golden Cross. Feasibility studies into reopening the Talisman mine at Karangahake are continuing, and advanced projects with preliminary inferred resource estimates are reported at Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Muirs. In the Taupo Volcanic Zone, 11 prospects have been drilled, resulting in the definition of large but low-grade Au-Ag resources at Ohakuri. In Northland, several Au, Ag and/or Hg prospects are known, and small quantities of Ag and Hg have been mined. Six prospects have had some drilling, with the most advanced exploration at Puhipuhi. The application of Taupo Volcanic Zone geothermal systems research to the modelling of former hydrothermal mineralising processes in some epithermal prospects has enabled better targeting of exploration.CITATION:Christie, A B and Barker, R G, 2015. "South African mining operations depend on the skilled professionals produced through the tertiary education sector. In geoscience courses at the University of the Witwatersrand, which lead into the mining sector, there has been a significant increase in student intake over the past 15 years. This increase has been characterized by a radical shift in demography: in classes where white male students once formed the majority, black female students are now in the majority. This demographic shift appears closely linked to policies addressing issues of social justice and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. We document this change and consider the role played by employment equity legislation (as in the Mining Charter) and corporate social investment strategies in the mining industry, notably through bursaries offered to black female students. We also look at the changing needs of the industry, where the critical need for managerial skills, not just technical knowledge, is highlighted through data from surveys of past students and industry managers. Our findings indicate the need for a curriculum adjustment to meet these changing requirements, as well as more rigorous selection criteria for bursars than simply gender, race, and appropriate matric results. IntroductionThe South African economy has historically been linked to mining and the exploitation of mineral resources. South African mining operations are dependent on the professional labour that is produced through the tertiary education sector, with critical thinking, teamwork, and the art of negotiation having been identified as the crucial skills required for this industry (Sideropoulos, 2014). Over the past three decades the South African system of education has gone through a period of dysfunction that it is struggling to rectify (Maphai, 2014). This has impacted on the levels of academic preparedness of students applying for places in higher education. Concurrently, government and university policies have widened access to higher education in response to the need to address issues of social injustice and transformation related to South Africa’s history of apartheid. As a result, the number of students admitted to universities has increased dramatically. In the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the increase in student numbers has been accompanied by a significant change in demographics: classrooms which in the past were dominated by white males have given way to classrooms in which black females are often in the majority. This demographic shift is related to legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broadbased Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, developed to reshape the socio-economic and equity frameworks of the country (Botha and Cronje, 2015). Requirements aimed at transformation in terms of management, skills development, and employment equity, together with corporate social investment (CSI) requirements, have resulted in bursaries being made available to attract students from designated groups, which in turn has increased the number of black students, and notably black female students, taking courses in geosciences. However, due to the economic downturn, instability in the mining industry has recently resulted in the downsizing of some mines, with international investors pulling out of South Africa. This instability resulted in devastating strikes across all sectors of the mining industry (Stewart, 2013) and in Marikana, an important platinum mining area, the strike culminated in a deadly shoot-out between miners and police. The resulting tensions spilled over into the gold mining sector, resulting in further strike action, shaft closures, and retrenchments. These challenges have implications not only for the mining industry in South Africa, but for the tertiary education providers whose graduates would have been absorbed into the mine-related workforce."

There are two major gold recovery methods: the hydrometallurgical technique, which employs cyanide solutions, and amalgamation method, which involves mercury (Hg). These methods present considerable health, safety, and environmental concerns. Past applications of alpha-cyclodextrin (α-CD) on gold scraps show that α-CD is not only inexpensive, but is also environmentally friendly. This research work used α-CD to recover gold from gold ores instead of gold scraps. The gold ore was sourced from Shanono gold deposit site Kano State,Nigeria. The gold ore was characterized by fire assay (FA) for the precious metal. The concentrate was digested with aqua regia (AR) for 24 h. Modified AR, where hydrochloric acid was replaced with hydrobromic acid, was used for the gold digestion due to the good match in molecular recognition between gold bromide ion (AuBr)− and α- CD in a second sphere coordination complex. The digestate was characterized using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Gold recovery using this technique is pH sensitive, and five pH values (2.0, 3.6, 4.0, 5.4, and 6.0) were investigated. FA analysis showed the Shanono gold ore deposit contains an average of 4.71 ppm of gold, AAS analysis showed highest gold recovery of 69% at pH 4.0, which is lower than recoveries from the metal scraps. This could be due to the presence of other gangue minerals closely associated with the ore. However, gold recovery using α-CD on Shanono gold ore has shown to have a higher yield of 69% compared to 35.5% yield obtainable by Artisan Small Scale Miners using mercury.

Computer technology was applied to solve three problems in the selling of certain industrial minerals to the glass and foundry industries. The computer solutions provide for better service to customers and have helped increase sales. II. Summary Electronic data processing techniques were applied: 1. To automatically and continuously "trace" rail car shipments of bentonite. 2. To aid our sales people in recommending to glass plant purchasing agents which of several possible feldspathic materials is the best value at any of about 100 glass plants and to give guidance on the amount of value difference. 3. To help in locating plant sites for three blending or pre-mixing stations to serve the foundry industry at minimum cost and with maximum tonnage and maximum profitability.

The average heat requirement per barrel of crude processed in the United states rose from 555,000 B. t. u. in 1939 to 579,000 B. t. u. in 1940, although crude runs increased from 1,237,840,000 barrels to 1,294,162,000 barrels in that period. Thus the almost invariable rule that the average amount of heat needed to refine a barrel of crude oil declines when total crude runs to stills increases was broken. (See fig. 1.) The reasons underlying the apparent loss in fuel efficiency in 1940 are quite obscure. There is little question but that the principle of heat exchange, the most important fuel saver, was used as extensively in 1940, as in 1939. A few companies replaced purchased power with electricity made at their plants, but for the country as a whole purchased electricity increased 7 percent, as compared with a 5-percent gain in crude runs to stills. Furthermore, the premise -the more complex the products the more fuel required -does not hold, as the yield of ?complex" products, including gasoline, declined in 1940.

"Hydrometallurgical processes used for metal recovery from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) typically involve dismantling, shredding and physical separation prior to successive leaching stages for selective dissolution of different metals. The principles of the physical separation units are well understood, but valuable metal losses of more than 30 % can be incurred during these processing steps. The impact of the physical separation units’ performance on downstream leaching operations have not been defined; this prevents the development of a well-integrated process. The objective of this project was to determine to what extent the base metal leaching behavior depends on the physical separation pre-treatment. PCBs were shredded to 100 % passing 2 mm before physical separation by dense medium separation (DMS) as well as magnetic separation. Batch leaching tests using various concentrations of sulfuric acid were conducted on three feed fractions: (1) shredded PCBs without any physical separation, (2) heavy fraction recovered from DMS, and (3) non-magnetic fraction recovered from the DMS heavy fraction. DMS increased the metal content in the feed from 48 % to 75 % on a mass basis, but 70 % of the gold and 20 % of the copper reported to the light fraction. The application of magnetic separation to the heavy fraction produced by DMS removed 67 % and 61 % of the iron and nickel, respectively, while negligible amounts of non-magnetic metals were removed. Although DMS successfully concentrated the feed and magnetic separation removed the majority of iron and nickel, these steps did not result in any improvement in the rate or extent of copper leaching. Metals generally leached faster when the sulfuric acid concentration was increased from 1 M to 2.5 M; this effect was seen to be more pronounced for pretreated feed. INTRODUCTION The fast rate of technological development has led to a decrease in the service life of electronic devices. This is resulting in an increased rate of electronic waste generation. The recovery of metals from electronic waste is of environmental and economic interest. The majority of these metals are typically located on printed circuit boards (PCBs) within electronic devices (Tuncuk, Stazi et al., 2012). Hydrometallurgical processes are considered a viable option for small scale metal recovery from waste PCBs, and generally involve the following steps: disassembly for removal of hazardous and reusable parts, size reduction, physical separation, successive leaching stages for metal dissolution and finally recovery of metals from leach solutions."

En este sentido, el presente texto presenta una alternativa de explotación mecanizada donde el cuerpo mineralizado tolere los niveles altos de temperatura a través de un nuevo block que se aplique en la profundización del ore-body y puede minimizar los costos operativos que esto conlleva.

THE material improvements which have been made in the practice of exploiting oil and gas reservoirs in the United States during recent years may be attributed largely to: (1) The necessity for drilling deeper wells at costs not much greater than was formerly expended on shallower wells. (2) The necessity for producing oil at a lower cost per barrel. (3) A growing recognition of the importance of the nature of production practice upon ultimate yield of oil and gas. The first two of these factors result, to a large extent, from the fact that a greater proportion of new development has been deeper development, and these wells have been drilled in the face of progressively lower per well allowables. In California, for instance, maximum allowables have declined from 400 barrels per day in March, 1938, to 156 barrels per day in September, 1940, and during this same period some 125 wells were drilled to the deeper 10,000-foot producing horizons discovered during this time. The third item listed above results from our increasing knowledge of the basic factors which influence the amount of recovery we may expect from reservoirs. In addition to the longer-range planning now being undertaken by the more prudent operators, State proration and conservation laws have focused attention upon the importance of methods conducive to obtaining progressively greater quantities of the hydrocarbons in place. In a paper of this length it will be possible to discuss only a few of the recent advances. An effort has been made to select the more important of these and to indicate, where possible, the factors which have made these advances possible.

The second half of 2008 and the first half of 2009 brought up important anniversaries. My old passport from Czechoslovakia has a stamp with date 10-10-1968 at 10:00 AM, the exact time I crossed the border between the former Czechoslovak Republic and Austria. This date has an important meaning because I could not come back to my country for the next 21 years. The 40th anniversary of Soviet led invasion, which took place on the 21st of August 2008, revealed some unknown and long time kept secret news.

IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

The Chino open pit mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant county in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership, two- thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The concentrator, with a design capacity of 37,000 tons of copper-molybdenite ore per day, was commissioned in July, 1982. Further design modifications have resulted in an increase in throughput capacity to 42,000 tpd

MOST of us will, I think, agree that never before in the history of the coal industry has the human side of our business been so important as today. Since, even in wholly mechanized mining, labor cost is such a large percentage of out total cost we are all deeply concerned not only about the present attitude of our employees but particularly about the future, when the industry returns to a "survival of the fittest" basis. Many things could and should be done about our employee relations in the coal business. Failure to recognize these obligations and do something about them may lead to serious consequences, the least serious of which will be the loss not only of many of our better employees but a large portion of our potential employees, as they graduate from our schools to other in¬dustries. Some of these things should be handled by the industry as a whole whereas others should be done by individual companies. Due to varying conditions and size of organizations it would, at best, be necessary to vary a program to meet the individual needs of each operator.

Coal supply analysis has since about 1973 become a major activity of many scholars and consulting firms. The present paper is an effort to explain in as nontechnical fashion as possible the state of the art and what implications, if any, the research has for those actually engaged in producing coal or regulating the industry. l The discussion stresses the coal supply side of the models and makes limited comments about other elements in the analysis. To orient the appraisal, it is desirable to recall the features of coal supply that an adequate model should capture. The first considerations are the locational aspects of the industry. Transportation costs can, in some cases, exceed the production costs of coal, and thus any adequate model must incorporate a treatment of the economics of transporting coal from one location to another. A second major issue is that of the heterogeneity of coal; models should treat as well as possible such key differences among coals as their Btu and sulfur content. Third, we recognize that, with given technology and labor, capital, and supply costs, an expansion of the supply of a given type of coal in a specific region will occur only if prices rise. This is the familiar proposition of textbook economics that supply is an increasing function of price. Finally, over time, changes in technology, input cost, and depletion interact to cause changes in the price of given amounts of coal. Economics represents the net effect of this process by a shift over time in the supply curve. During the 1950s and 1960s, the trend was to reduce the production costs of a given output; subsequently costs rose sharply.

Recent trends in flotation technology are briefly reviewed. These show that considerable development has been made as the operators, suppliers and technologists have responded to the challenges of the industry. Most of these advances have been based on empirical and phenomenological methods. There is a considerable opportunity to make further advances through a more fundamental, scientific approach. Some of this work is discussed and, although progress is being made on this front, industrial uptake has been somewhat slow. A number of specific issues facing the industry are discussed.

This paper briefly describes the principal commercial and near-commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel and the important placer-mining operations in Lemhi County, Idaho. It is on of a series on western mining districts being published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper is based on a field survey of the placer-mining districts of Lemhi County in the summer of 1938. Available information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and claim owners; operators supplied the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.
