In its geologic sense the term marble is applied to rocks consisting of crystallized grains of calcite or dolomite or a mixture of the two. Although limestone has the same chemical composition as marble it differs in that the component particles of calcium or magnesium car- bonates are granular and noncrystalline. In marble the crystals may be intimately intergrown, whereas limestone is an aggregation of unrelated particles cemented together into a solid mass. In its commercial sense the term marble has a much wider applica- tion. As susceptibility to polish is one of its chief commercial assets, all calcareous rocks capable of polish are classed as marbles. Lime- stones that show little crystalline structure may, if they take a good polish, be classed as marbles. Furthermore, serpentine rocks, even if they contain little calcium or magnesium carbonate, are classed as marbles, as they are commercial substitutes of true marbles.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Flute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. Merle F. Schofield is president of the company and maintains an office at Hike, Nev. These claims were leased by H. P. "AbstractThe uraninite-bearing deposits in the Charlebois Lake area of northeastern Saskatchewan are unusual and important concentrations of uranium. They were first discovered in 1949 and preliminary development work to the end of the 1951 field season indicates the probability that this will become •another uranium producing district. The deposits are in zones bordering granite masses. These zones are of migmatite (mixed rocks) composed of calcium-rich meta-sediments intruded and replaced by a fine-grained white pegmatite. Locally this pegmatite is replaced by an end fraction which is relatively rich in fine-grained disseminated uraninite; it is these occurrences that constitute the bodies of economic interest.The fine-grained white pegmatite contains plagioclase feldspar more lime-rich than that in the granites of which it is an end differentiate. This extra lime, evidently derived from the intruded sediments, would result in the raising of the temperature of crystallization of the pegmatite-forming magma, thus consolidating it rapidly near the granite contacts as a fine-grained pegmatite. The end liquor containing uranium was evidently locally concentrated in minor fracture zones in these pegmatites. Where no lime sediments were present. the coarse-grained alkaline pegmatites were formed. Their crystallization would not be accelerated and the uranium would tend not to be localized in the pegmatite but to migrate and consolidate at lower temperatures with the end products, possibly in some instances as pitchblende veins."

This paper summarizes the research effort that was conducted as part of a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Company. The objective of this investigation was to further the understanding of the floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is both economically and structurally undesirable. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with an underground opening. This redistribution of stresses may cause roof or pillar problems that otherwise would not have occurred. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley coalbed is not cons1dered to be caused by "squeezing" or plastic flow of the materials involved. The "squeezing" type floor heave is normally associated with relatively weak floor members that contain significant amounts of clay mineralization. The floor members in the Beckley coalbed are competent, relatively strong materials which fail in a manner that can best be described by the term "buckling." This buckling-type failure is indirectly related to the time-dependent deformation properties of the materials involved, but is considered to be more of a slender column, or panel, type failure than a "squeeze" or "flow"-related failure. The Beckley coalbed has had a history of floor heave ground control problems. The Glen Rogers mine, which opened in the 1920's, experienced extensive floor heave. In a report dated April 1929, James P. Keatley of the West Virginia State Department of Mines described the floor heave in the Glen Rogers mine. Several observations listed in the Glen Rogers report that appear to be consistent with current observations follow: 1. Water plays no apparent part in the floor heave process. 2. No evidence of gas has been found in the floor. 3. The thickness of the overburden, which varies from 183 to 396 m (600 to 1300 ft), has no relationship to the floor heave. In the conclusions of the 1929 report on the Glen Rogers mine, Keatley states, "A statement in brief as to the cause (of floor heave) would lie that an undetermined natural condition doubtless augmented by former and present mining methods causes the bottom to heave." As this report will show, Mr. Keatley's insight into the problem was most accurate. The "undetermined natural condition" is the existence of a biaxial, horizontal, compressive stress field. This stress field is in excess of that which would be expected from gravity loading. This stress field and the material properties of the floor rock combine to cause the floor heave that has been experienced. The floor heave that occurs in the Beckley seam generally occurs as arching, with a tension fracture, near the center of the floor span or as a break near the rib followed by vertical deflection (of the floor) at the rib and sloping of the floor across the entry. Examples of the floor heave are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The two types of floor heave are merely different manifestations of the same basic failure mechanism. When the entries experiencing floor heave were identified on a map of the mine under investigation, it was apparent that there was a relationship between the floor heave and the direction of the entries. The main entries, which are used for ventilation and haulage, experienced the majority of the floor heave. This directional relationship suggested a directionally related loading mechanism, or more specifically, a biaxial, horizontal stress field that exceeds what would be expected by gravity loading. Since the main entries were oriented at a bearing of N25oW, it was hypothesized that the maximum compressive component of the horizontal stress field was at 90° to these entries or at a bearing of N65oE. An in Situ testing program was developed to test this hypothesis and investigate the floor heave problem.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH), together with employees from The Doe Run Company, are monitoring and evaluating the stability of a pillar retreat section at the Fletcher Mine, a lead/zinc, room-and-pillar mine near Bunker, MO. Cemented rockfill is being used to provide roof support as high-grade, remnant ore pillars are mined. Earth pressure cells and deformation meters placed in backfill panel pillars monitor stress change and vertical deformation, respectively, as nearby ore-bearing pillars are extracted. Similarly, biaxial stressmeters and borehole extensometers are used to monitor mining-induced stress change and deformation, respectively, in long-term support pillars. Data from these instruments indicate that when ore-bearing pillars were mined, stress was redistributed from support pillars to a backfill panel pillar. The data also indicate that the backfill and support pillars have remained stable for two years after pillar extraction was completed in the area. This research demonstrates the importance of using reliable instruments to document the geomechanical behavior of pillars and backfill. Gaining a better understanding of roof support and stress redistribution mechanisms is a fundamental part of NIOSH's goal to reduce and/or predict rockfalls, which are still among the leading causes of injuries in metal/nonmetal underground mines.

Surface deformation monitoring is required all over the mining industry. For example oil and gas companies need this information to support exploration and production activities and to detect impacts from surface subsidence of existing hydrocarbon fields. Also opencast mines require large area information of subsidence due to dewatering of the overburden. Because of this, a lot of surface deformations measurements with GPS or traditional geodetic measurement techniques have been conduced during the last decades. This paper presents the actual capabilities to analyze GPS data using the state of the art Bernese GPS Software for GPS post processing. A new way of monitoring subsidence is a combination of GPS and satellite InSAR data. Considering this it is hoped that a combined strategy will permit receiving overall more information by integrating high point density of InSAR and accuracy of GPS. DMT is one of the leading actors on GPS services especially for monitoring surface movements from underground activities e.g. mining, water pumping or oil and gas exploitation. The paper will discuss preferences and problems of this approach on results of a current project of DMT.

Springvale Colliery is an underground longwall mine situated approximately 10 km north-west of Lithgow in the western coalfields of New South Wales. Following a full-scale review of the mineÆs ventilation system in mid-2010, it was clear that the mine by early 2013 would become ventilation constrained as a result of the increasing size of the mine workings, the predicted worsening tailgate conditions and plans to introduce a fourth continuous miner unit. This realisation led Springvale to embark on a major upgrade of the mine ventilation system that would meet short-term and life-of-mine (LOM) requirements.Included in the upgrade project was the installation of a new high pressure centrifugal main exhaust fan that is capable of overcoming the high resistances imposed frequently on the circuit by restrictions in the tailgate airway. The new fan featuring a 2.5 MW motor is designed to be capable of operating at a quantity of 250 m3/s at a pressure of 7.9 kPa, a substantial improvement over the previous system, which had an operating duty of approximately 145 m3/s at 1.9 kPa. The new fan is of a centre hung design and features a backup diesel motor to maintain ventilation in the event of a power outage.Structural engineering analysis determined that under the operation of the new main fan the existing standard of ventilation control devices (VCDs) at Springvale would not be adequate to withstand the increase in differential pressures. As such, an upgrade of critical VCDs was undertaken utilising a novel high flexural strength (9 MPa) shotcrete and thin spray-on liner, which help serve to safeguard the structural integrity of the appliances and prevent increased leakage as roadway conditions at VCD sites deteriorate over time (a serious problem in many areas of the workings at Springvale).In addition to the main ventilation system upgrade, a separate upgrade focusing on improving development face ventilation was also undertaken. This upgrade included the purchase of two high capacity (22 m3/s) variable inlet vane (VIV) auxiliary fans to facilitate comfortable development face ventilation.The upgrade of the mine ventilation system at Springvale has been three years in the making, but has removed a major business risk in that it has afforded mine planning and operational flexibility (a fourth unit can now be introduced) for the LOM, and importantly provided unprecedented levels of comfort to operators at the working faces where previously ventilation and heat issues were frequently reported. "This paper reflects on the author’s experiences in undertaking mining studies and reviewing mining projects and technical reports, particularly over the past five years, and the impact of recent changes in reporting standards and listing requirements pertaining to mining-related evaluation and valuation exercises. It also discusses contemporary changes in the expectations of the investment community and the implications for the role of the technical specialist in providing advice to such stakeholders.Not for the first time in history, the resources industry has experienced a significant downturn after a period of strong, sustained growth in line with the traditional view of the cyclical nature of commodity markets. The resource industry is currently faced with capital austerity in the wake of projects ‘failing’ (not delivering to expectations). In response, the industry has experienced changes in investment behaviour (slowing of investment) and an increasing regulatory burden as stakeholders seek a greater understanding of mining project risks.This paper discusses this response and uses case studies to highlight the key learnings (perhaps re-learnt) by the industry. It also discusses the challenges faced by technical specialists in communicating the results of technical and valuation studies to the investment community.As investors seek to take advantage of the current stage in the investment cycle, the key challenge of the technical specialist is to effectively communicate the uncertainty in technical assumptions, risks and opportunities that drive project value.CITATION:Fairfield, P J, 2016. "The meaning of the term ""process control"" has evolved significantly since its widespread use began in the manufacturing industries in the 1940s. Further, the scope of process control applications has drastically increased both in terms of the breadth of industries using process automation technologies and the vertical integration of these technologies within a single industry. This evolution and integration of process control technologies within the manufacturing industries has proceeded to such an extent that process automation is an integral part of modern business practices.This paper will examine the current status of process control technology from simple process regulation through process performance optimization to business planning. Each layer of the operations automation hierarchy will be discussed both in. terms of the current state-of-the-art and the directions in which these technologies are evolving. The key tools and tasks necessary for success at every level of the automation hierarchy will be introduced. Finally, the critical challenges that must be faced in accomplishing the goal of complete Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) will be described.Finally, although this paper addresses issues of practical importance to any manufacturing company, the discussions will be framed in terms of the particular challenges facing and the opportunities available within the materials manufacturing industries."

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of production stoper drills and results of their field tests, it is shown that underground stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using these pneumatic drills. The design concept of these drills is a radical departure from the standard valved rifle bar type drill machine design to a drill featuring a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and a shroud tube. Six drills were manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

Many of us who have interacted with senior executives from leading oil and gas companies over the last few years on the subject of HSE performance have observed a marked shift in their engagement on this aspect of their business performance. There seems to be a shared impression that HSE performance will have markedly increased impact on their businesses going forward. On the back of this very real concern, many are taking material actions to secure a step change in their safety and environmental performance: hiring respected mainstream operational personnel to lead their HSE function; investing in capacity/skills development for HSE professionals to increase their effectiveness in addressing the needs of the business; taking a hard look at the efficacy of established management and audit programs (too much paper, not enough results?); investing in information management systems so they can have access to real time reliable performance indicators; and, critically, initiatives to reduce accident statistics (especially focused on fatalities and contractors? activities) and deliver meaningful reductions in their environmental footprints. Underpinning all of these actions is a clear sense that substantial, very well-intentioned activity and investment in HSE aspects of the business has not been hitting the mark and yielding too little return in terms of performance improvement. The very serious recent events on the US Gulf Coast and at a refinery in the US Pacific Northwest have added fuel to this fire. The need for approaches which will secure a step-change in performance on the front line in the global oil and gas industry has never been greater.

In arranging the references the same general scheme has been followed, but as in those bulletins, several changes and additions have been made in the classifica.tion, the more important being in the classes " Development and production " and "Refining and refineries." German periodicals for 1917 were not procurable and references to articles in those and in other foreign journals that were not available have been credited to the sources from which they were procured.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

Professional engineers of today require a wide array of experience and knowledge. It is true that commonly engineering degrees do teach the technical requirements well, but do fall short in the way of teaching other non-technical issues of professionalism to the student. Today calls for an engineer who does not only have a high standard of the technical knowledge required for their degree, but also has a broad range of experience in areas that are becoming increasingly important in engineering. The importance of social responsibility, liability and interpersonal relations is high. Through the face of the changing world, it has become clear that there is a need for a new type of engineer, who has a broad range of expertise, as well as the typical technical abilities required. This paper will outline these non-technical issues and propose ways of combining these ideas into the mainstream engineering degree.

The emerging discipline of ‘geometallurgy’ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance behaviours. A key outcome is enhanced economic optimisation of mining and improved risk management tools.Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated research to support this emerging area resulted in commencement of a major ongoing initiative in mid-2005. The AMIRA International P843 ‘GeMIII’ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a cross-discipline collaboration involving a number of world-class research organisations supported by over 20 industry sponsors.The project is delivering integrated tools and methods which link intrinsic rock characteristics to prediction of mineral processing performance. These indices must be capable of spatial distribution in 3D resource models and incorporation into mine planning and optimisation. A key aspect is provision of new cost-effective tools and methods which can provide the large numbers of measured and estimated data points required to undertake effective modelling and spatial distribution. The integrated methodology and enabling technologies being developed through the ongoing AMIRA GeMIII project are outlined, together with implications for supporting industry best practice.

Insofar as prevention of mine explosions is concerned, it is apparent that the coal-mining industry has profited but little from experiences during the past 15 years. The fact that explosions can be prevented if well-known preventive measures are adopted and conscientiously carried out appears to warrant the conclusion that many coal-mining people are indifferent to the hazards that may result in explosions. Although the principal burden of preventing explosions is upon the management, and much of the evident carelessness in failing to place in effect and to enforce suitable precautions, is assessable directly against management, the worker also has a very definite responsibility, and numerous explosions have resulted because of his failure to carry out his part in accepted principles of safety. The record of fatalities from mine explosions during the past 5 fiscal years has been anything but encouraging or about which coal-mining people can take pride; more men were killed by explosions (673) than were killed from the same cause during the preceding eight years combined (577). During each of the fiscal years 1942 and 1943, 152 fatalities resulted from explosions, compared to 163 during the fiscal year 1941, 206 in 1940, and only 16 in 1939.

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

To solve the support stability control problem for a coal face with large angles along both strike and dip (CLSD), the ’support-surrounding rock’ mechanical model has been developed, which takes into account the impact of the dip angle of the seam on the stability of the support in the strike direction. The mechanical relationships of the critical topple angle and critical slip angle of the support along the strike of the coal face with large dip angle and the support height, support resistance, friction coefficient, and other factors have been derived through the mechanical analysis of support stability in the strike direction of CLSDs in the free state, the operating state, and the special state. The research findings were applied to a fully mechanized CLSD in Xinji Coal Mine. The maximum underhand angle and overhand angle in strike are 42° and 25° respectively, and the maximum dip is 39°. It is calculated that during underhand mining and overhand mining, the critical support resistances for avoiding support toppling are 3723 kN and 1714 kN respectively, and the critical support resistances for avoiding slipping of the support are 7405 kN and 6606 kN respectively. Thus, the selection of type ZZ7600/18/38 hydraulic roof support for the coal face is justified. Measures to prevent sliding of the support and the installation of a limiting stop maintain the support runs in good condition and ensure safe and efficient mining of CLSD.
