"The rocks of Notre Dame Bay form part of the Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt (Williams, 1964) of the Newfoundland Appalachians. The Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt of the northern part of the island consists predominantly of Lower and Middle Ordovician rocks overlain by Silurian elastic and volcanic sequences and underlain in the marginal zones of the belt by polydeformed metamorphic rocks of the Gander Lake Group (Kennedy and McGonigal, 1972) in the northeast and the Fleur de Lys Supergroup (Neale and Nash, 1963; Kennedy, Phillips and Neale, 1972) in the northwest. The Ordovician rocks of the Central Mobile Belt have been subdivided into a number of local groups in different parts of the region. The Lush's Bight Group was first defined by MacLean (1947) . Recently Marten (1971) has revised the definition of this group, as shown in Table 1 and his revised definition is accepted in the present paper. Plate tectonic models that have been proposed for the development of the Newfoundland Appalachian System have indicated that the mafic volcanic rocks of western Notre Dame Bay represent oceanic crust (Bird and Dewey, 1970; Dewey and Bird, 1971; Church and Stevens, 1970) which marks the remnants of the proto-Atlantic Ocean first proposed by Wilson (1966) . Such models infer that the mafic volcanic rocks constitute the upper part of an ophiolite sequence. Analyses of the lavas show that they are tholeiitic and support this conclusion (Papezik and Fleming, 1967; Smitheringale, 1972) . A complete ophiolite sequence, consisting of peridotites overlain by gabbros, overlain by a sheeted diabase dyke complex which passes upward into pillow lavas, occurs at the base of the Snooks Arm Group (Upadhyay et al., 1971 ) . Sheeted diabase dykes are known to underlie the lowest mafic pillow lavas of the Lush's Bight Group at several localities in Notre Dame Bay (Strong, 1972, and pers. comm.) . However, several conflicting points about the geology of this region suggest that although a typical oceanic crustal sequence of Lower Ordovician age is present, older rocks occur within the ophiolite terrane in several places (Williams, Kennedy and Neale, 1972) ."

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."

JUST as 85 per cent of the total ore produced annually in the United States comes from the Lake Superior region, so does one of its six producing districts-the Mesabi --dominate that region both as to production and total reserves; also in ore Treatment, Mesabi practice is dominant. Therefore, in discussing future reserves or ore treatment one may visualize one big district with five smaller districts as so many satellites. In considering the future less thought need be given to processes than to, economic policies. For thirty years experimental work has now been in progress and every possible ore-treatment process now known has been given attention. This work was started when there was no recognizable danger of running short of ore because of rapid consumption. Thirty years ago the annual production had just progressed beyond the twenty-million bracket for the first time. Today fifty million tons is considered a small production, and last year the aim was for 65 million. At the recent rate of production the life of the estimated reserves of good ore is about 35 years. All who know the local terrain are convinced that, unlike thirty years ago, the chances for discoveries of new big deposits are nil; treatment of lean ores obviously is to become an all-important topic.

December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." 'If these blue sky Ph.D.'s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn't make a lot of the suggestions they do."

Introduction As the Sherritt Gordon property is still in the development stage, . it is rather difficult to write a proper account of the mining methods and milling practice that will be used. While the general scheme of operation will remain the same, there will undoubtedly be many minor changes to meet special conditions which we cannot forsee at the present time. Most of the work accomplished to date has followed the usual routine of preliminary development in the Canadian North. However, we have learned a few things which might be of use to others operating under similar conditions. The most important of these is the saving in power cost made possible by the use of Diesels as against steam power when using wood fuel, and the movement of freight by tractors when rail transportation is not available. Location The property i6 located about 90 miles north of The Pas, or 40 miles northeast of the Flin Flon mine. A branch line from Cranberry Portage, on the?C. N. railway, between Flin Flon and The Pas, connects the property with the outside.

All Dust Center activities are focussed to be responsive to this mission which is shared by several federal agencies closely associated with the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust such as USBM, M,SHA, and NIOSH, and the mining industry. While significant progress has been achieved in making mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier, respirable dust disease remains the nations worst industrial hazard. GOALSThe goals of the Respirable Dust Center have been formulated to recognize the diverse scientific, engineering and medical aspects of respirable dust as well as the need to enhance the interaction, education and technology transfer in the respirable dust area.The Center goals are to:1. Enhance the understanding of the scientific, engineering and biological characteristics of fine and respirable mineral particles, fibers, organic aerosols, and complex particles found in the mining and milling atmospheres.2. "On the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, in Quebec, are located orebodies of low-grade titaniferous magnetite. The Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM), who have an interest in the deposits, believed that beneficiation of the could generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility. A joint research project of SOQUEM and CANMET investigated alkaline roasting of a magnetic concentrate, followed by leaching of the calcine and separation and recovery of Cr and V by solvent extraction. Aluminum was recovered by precipitation.The present paper describes the roast-leach bench-scale and pilot-plant work leading to the development of the optimum conditions f or the integrated process.A plant flowsheet was developed for the treatment of 5 x 106 tons of magnetic concentrate per annum. Estimates of capital and operating costs were made.Based on a recovery of approximately 90% V, 85% Cr and 75% AI, the total hydrometallurgical plant fixed capital costs, including mining, concentration and shipping, are estimated at $1.021 x 109; the operating costs are estimated at $131.92/ton concentrate. Annual revenue from the Na2CrO4.H2O, V2O5 and A12O3 produced is calculated to be $421 x 106.IntroductionThe Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM) acquired in 1968 an interest in four titaniferous magnetite orebodies located in Eastern Quebec. 85 miles north of Mingan on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The Mingan deposit, with an estimated tonnage of one billion tons, has a reported average grade of 43% Fe, 6.3% Ti , 1.60% Cr, 0.19% V and 6.1% Al with minor amounts of nickel. SOQUEM, on the basis of previous bench-scale data, believed that the recovery of chromium, vanadium and alumina by alkaline roasting would generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility on the coast. One of the approaches selected by SOQUEM for beneficiation of the ore consisted of a combination of magnetic concentration followed by alkaline roasting of the calcine."

The somewhat misnomered "continuous" face section is in most mines today still far from perfect continuity. Achieving uninterrupted flow of coal from the mining machine to the outside has been a long sought for goal. Clearly, the largest problem to be solved in continuous mining today is one of increasing the cutting time of the miner. Full machine utilization can never be achieved with the new high capacity miners, as long as their performance is tied to that of the shuttle car. Figure No. I illustrates the point at which shuttle car haulage distance determines unit productivity rather than the productive capacity of the miner. Continuous mining is never realized. A recent development has proven, however, that truly continuous mining and haulage is possible. The Bell & Zoller Coal Company working with the Research and Development Department of Hewitt-Robins Inc. developed and perfected a new mining system which offers advantages in terms of increased productivity at reduced mining costs and enhances the safety of personnel at the face. This new system involves the use of two pieces of equipment that form a unbroken link, at all times, between the mining machine and the mine belt haulage system. These pieces are a Mobile Bridge Conveyor, and an extensible panel conveyor. The following areas of discussion will be covered during the review of this development. I. Rotary kilns are used for a variety of mineral processing operations. Hatch makes use of a kiln model developed from first principles to evaluate designs for its clients. This tool has been applied to a variety of pyrometallurgical applications. This paper illustrates the application of numerical optimization techniques in combination with the kiln model in the interrogation of a generic iron-ore reduction process. The fundamental modelling concepts are explained, followed by a description of the optimization approach. The results show how the combination of the two methods, with modern computing power, can generate a large number of viable design and operating candidates.

Refuge Chamber Expectations Training was created by a multidisciplinary team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to inform miners of what to expect psychologically and physically if it became necessary to use a refuge chamber in a mine emergency. The presentation can be used either for one large group or for individual miners. The training is a multimedia Adobe Flash presentation containing pictures, audio, video, and interviews with miners who have used a refuge chamber in an emergency. It must be run on a computer with Adobe Flash Player installed (refer to the computer system requirements section).

Planning today for what hopefully will never happen is one of the surest ways to decrease the chance of it happening. As Napoleon proved and Ian Mitroff wrote, "The heat and stress of battle is the worst time to make decisions of strategic importance." Mitroff also wrote, "The value of a plan is not that it will ever perfectly match reality, but going through the process of planning speeds the process of recovery. It allows the organization to emotionally work through the worst before it actually happens." This paper concentrates on things miners must consider; on the need for plans to be like a belt conveyor strong enough to carry the load, flexible enough to stretch a little; on the criticality of throwing away fax machines and telephones, and having certain officials at the scene rather than back in head-quarters; on the training of fire brigades and mine-rescue teams; on having company-controlled chromatographs; on having people who can look at trends rather than numbers. Some of the things in this paper might anger some readers; for that, I can only ask them to consider first the problem not their position.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of some clays and shales and other materials in North and South Dakota to determine the feasibility of lightweight -aggregate manufacture in the two States. The background of the light - weight -aggregate industry, on a national basis, and results of preliminary laboratory testing of samples of North and South Dakota clays and shales from various localities are presented herein. The countrywide search for lightweight aggregates was necessitated toward the end of the 19th century by the change in building design from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls to a framework of structural steel .beams and columns with thin walls, followed shortly by the use of reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the load-supporting frame. Ordinary concrete, with sand and gravel aggregate, weighs about 150 pounds to the cubic foot. A lighter concrete was needed to relieve the dead load and make it possible to construct higher buildings or add stories to existing buildings.

"IN A SHORT PAPER it is impossible to do much more than to list the industrial minerals found in Saskatchewan and to give a brief description of the activity associated with each. I will not attempt to discuss the geology. It is sufficient to say that the settled part of the Province is covered by glacial drift which varies in thickness from a few feet to several hundreds of feet, and that this has hindered the search over much of the Province.CLAYA notable exception to this is the Cypress Hills area in the southwest corner which did not suffer any glacial action and where we find some of the large exposures of Cretaceous clays. In this area, the majority of the deposits are of stone-ware clays which are •an excellent raw material for such products as face brick and sewer pipe. Although the clay cannot be transported over any great distance it is used extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the production of these products."

Since the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, mining has been at the centre of South Africa’s development. Although mining continues to contribute significantly to the country’s economy, it is a temporary land-use activity, and mine closure is inevitable. This paper reviews mine closure planning at Tshikondeni coal mine, which commenced in 2014 with the initiation of mine closure. The review presents the mine closure processes undertaken at the Tshikondeni coal mine as regulated by South Africa’s principal mining legislation, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002, and other relevant regulatory frameworks. To compile this review: (1) A desktop study was conducted; (2) empirical data was collected through one-on-one interviews with research participants at Tshikondeni coal mine; and 3) physical observations were made of the rehabilitation at various mine operations within the Tshikondeni coal mine complex. Research participants consisted of mine officials from different departments, i.e., human resources, and environmental, social, and business strategy, who were directly involved with the Tshikondeni coal mine closure. A questionnaire with semi-structured questions was developed. It was utilised to acquire a better understanding of mine closure planning at Tshikondeni coal mine and identify mine closure processes that aim to achieve post-mining land uses and align with Tshikondeni coal mine’s post-closure strategy, namely the Tshikondeni Legacy Project, with a post-closure strategy that has the potential to transition a mining economy to an eco-tourism economy that can preserve livelihoods and selfreliant communities.

THE electric motor has steadily replaced the steam and air engine for use in mine hoists, until today a new installation with other than electric drive is a rarity. Much existing steam-driven equipment has been changed over to electric drive. Driving power has grown in capacity since the initial electric unit rated 10 hp installed at Aspen, Colorado, in 1888, to 3000 hp and 4000 hp in the United States, and to 5500 hp in Canada-the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Electric installations now total in the thousands of units, a growth largely made possible by the development of large central electric-power stations and the extension of electric-power service to more mining areas.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated in laboratory tests that drilling with surface-charge-neutralizing concentrations of polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer solutions simultaneously improves penetration rates and extends bit life. The applicability of this additive to improve drilling performance in coal measure rocks was demonstrated under field conditions at an abandoned mine land site in Pennsylvania and a producing coal mine property in Ohio. Penetration rate improvements ranging from 15 to 50 pet were obtained when core drilling through a variety of coal measure lithologies. Drilling cost analysis indicates that the small added cost of using the polymer is more than offset by the savings that result from demonstrated increased drilling penetration rates, which translate into drilling cost savings of about 10 to 30 pct. This report also gives chemical analyses of a variety of coal measure rocks and some corresponding local drilling water samples, obtained from a wide geographical base, along with threshold concentrations of PEO required to effect the improved drilling performance in these rocks. From these data, the threshold PEO concentrations needed to ensure improved drilling performance can be estimated for any coal measure rock suite. Proper techniques for mixing PEO solutions are also presented.

Steel production process generates waste, among which is the electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). This waste has varying amounts of zinc, which is principally contained in the minerals zincite (ZnO) and franklinite (Fe2ZnO4). The presence of Zn is capable of economically motivating the recycling of this residue and facilitating the co-processing of the remaining material. The zinc content in EAFD and the presence of zincite, however, have significant influence on the application of hydrometallurgical recovery processes (economic alternatives to the Waelz process). In this study, based on the computational thermodynamic tool FactSage, theoretical considerations are made on the conditions for the formation of zinc-containing minerals found in EAFD. Through thermodynamic analysis, the best conditions for obtaining a high fraction of ZnO were analyzed, which favor the hydrometallurgical processes for EAFD treatment. A classification of dust depending on the phases present in the EAFD is suggested as a guide for the feasibility analysis for the use of a hydrometallurgical process.
