World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

The Schaffer linear kimberlite complex and Aultman kimberlite diatremes comprise a major part of the State Line kimberlite district of Colorado and Wyoming, which encompasses approximately 200 sq mi (500 km2). The district is located along the eastern flank of the northern Front Range and is underlain prin- cipally by Precambrian granites (approx. 1.4 b.y.) which have been intruded into an older (approx. 1.75 b.y.) metamorphic complex. The kimberlite occurrences are Devonian in age and are related to older Precambrian linear structures. The Schaffer kimberlite complex is a dike or fissure system with enlargements or blows developed at the intersections of cross faults; the two Aultman occurrences are diatremes. Kimberlite within the Schaffer complex is predominately grey to green phlogopite-calcite kimberlite breccia and tuffisitic breccia. Carbonate is abundant in some phases. Inclusions of host granite are common and locally abundant. Upper mantle peridotite, pyroxenite, and eclogite and lower crustal granulite xenoliths are present at many localities. Four phases of tuffisitic kimberlite breccia occur in the Aultman diatremes. These breccias are characterized by high carbonate and serpentine contents. Xenoliths of upper crustal granite, lower crustal granulite, and upper mantle assemblages are abundant locally. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rock xenoliths are also abundant in the Aultman diatremes but are absent in kimberlite of the Schaffer complex. From 1979 through September 1982, Cominco American, Inc., conducted geologic mapping, petrographic studies, geophysical surveys, geochemical surveys, and auger drilling in the Schaffer-Aultman project area as part of an extensive evaluation program of kimberlite occurrences. Forty bulk samples (approx. 8,000 metric tons) were excavated from the occurrences and then were processed for diamonds at Cominco American's heavy media separation and diamond recovery test plant at Fort Collins, Colorado. Indicated grades from the Schaffer and Aultman kimberlites range from approximately 0.5-1.0 carat per 100 metric tons and as such, the occurrences do not appear to approach economic viability at this time.

Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

The mining industry continues to be a major driver of the Australian economy generating over A$130 billion in export earnings in 2008/2009. However, the industry has been cited as a significant contributor to green house gas emissions. Australia's proposed carbon trading scheme, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) will financially impact on mining operations; this calls for a holistic planning approach for mining operations taking into account the impact of the emissions trading scheme. Since carbon trading is a new area of study, particularly within Australia, the quantitative effect of the CPRS on the mining industry is uncertain and current mine planning practices do not directly consider emissions. This paper presents results of the study into the impact of the CPRS on a hypothetical large scale open pit operation, using a spreadsheet model based on linear programming and simulation. By varying the production rates, life of mine (LOM), carbon price and ore grades among other variables several scenarios were simulated to determine the impact of emissions trading scheme on the net present value of the project. This study found that the adoption of the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme could impact mining operations in Australia by a three per cent to six per cent reduction in net present value, for carbon credit costs of $25/t to $50/t respectively. While the six per cent reduction in net present value for a mining operation is significant, rising fuel prices have had a similar effect in recent years. The most energy-intensive processes are the milling circuit and the flotation concentrator circuit. These processes are jointly responsible for up to 60 per cent of the total emissions, depending on the production rate and the level of offshore processing conducted. Clearly, the introduction of the CPRS makes it is imperative for mining companies to assess the impact of carbon emissions on a mining project during mine planning.

The time and amplitude statistics necessary to adequately describe electromagnetic (FM) noise in mines are illustrated through computer software techniques. They are 1) Allan Variance Analyses (AVA), 2) Interpulse Spacing Distributions (ISD), 3) Pulse Duration Distributions (PDD), 4) Average Crossing Rates (ACR), and S) Amplitude Probability Distributions (APD). These statistics are illustrated using data taken from a rather large store of raw analog data recorded in operational mines. The curves generated for the illustrations characterize the noise environment in the mines from which the corresponding data were taken, and should aid in the design of reliable communication systems for such mines.

Historic medical isotope production at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) in Chalk River involved the dissolution of irradiated isotope targets prior to extraction of Mo-99. This process generated liquid waste that was cemented in 5-gallon containers and transferred to an outdoor waste-management facility for intermediate storage. Research was undertaken to develop an innovative method for uranium, mercury and cesium recovery from the radioactive cemented waste (RCW). Regulations prohibit the removal of active radioactive waste from the Chalk River facility. Thus, CanmetMINING produced surrogate material following the same procedures and conditions to those used at CNL. The selective recovery of the uranium from the surrogate radioactive cemented waste (SRCW) could offer CNL more disposition options for the resulting wastes. Leaching tests were performed using four different SRCW at 1 kg scale. Different conditions, operating parameters, and the presence of plastic and corrosion products were evaluated on solubilization. The research investigated the use of potassium iodide with the sulphuric acid leach to increase metals recovery. Iodine improves the solubilisation of metals and the U dissolution reached 99%. The increase of leaching time reduces the U solubilization due to silica gel formation. Therefore, it will be important to control leaching time to avoid the loss of U during the pilot scale experiments. For Hg, the solubilization ranged from 60 to 80% due to the presence of metallic mercury and mercury sulphide found in SRCW cured at 60°C and/or aged for 30 months. Ion exchange (IX) was found the best method to separate the uranium from the impurities and produce a purified and concentrated uranium solution suitable for yielding a uranium product (yellow cake).

A series of organic collectors has been developed which successfully float synthetic secondary uranium minerals, such as autunite, carnotite, and torbernite. Recoveries up to 97 pct have been obtained. With cleaning of rougher concentrates, ratios of concentration as high as 15:1 are possible on head assays of 0.10 to 0.50 pct U 3 O 8. Additions of certain base metal salts aid in recovery and materially increase the rate of flotation and selectivity of the collectors for the synthetic minerals. Flotation tests on natural uranium minerals have not yet equaled results obtained on the synthetics, although these collectors do give better results than conventional collectors for nonsulfide minerals. RAPID increase in mining and milling uranium ores during the past seven years and the discovery of large tonnages of uranium-bearing material too low in grade to stand the cost of leaching have developed considerable interest in possible methods for beneficiating these marginal ores. Such ores are generally classed as those containing less than 0.10 pct U3O8. Development of a beneficiation method that would give both high recovery and high ratio of concentration would also make possible the beneficiation of higher grade ores and would provide higher grades of feed to existing leaching plants. Although considerable research and testing on physical or physico-chemical beneficiation of domestic uranium ores has been done in the past, to the best knowledge of the authors only a single application of physical beneficiation is now in operation on a commercial scale. Flotation has been attempted on the basis of mineral association rather than by direct concentration of the contained uranium minerals. Flotation studies conducted on this project on certain ores gave recoveries of 60 to 70 pct of the uranium by the use of conventional flotation agents such as oleic acid, but ratios of concentration were in the order of 1.5:1 to 2.5:1. Subsequent cleaning to upgrade the concentrates rapidly increased losses in the cleaner tailings, which were not later refloated in the rougher flotation. Selection of Collector: In selecting desirable organic collectors for these oxide systems, a thorough study was made of the relationship between structural characteristics and collector activity by an examination of the behavior of a number of different functional arrangements present in a variety of organic molecules, (see Fig. 1). It is generally accepted that a collector must have a relatively long-chain hydrocarbon radical and a chemically reactive elec-trophilic center. Such a requirement could be met by a large number of compounds, but steric effects at the uranium mineral surface, solubility, compat-ability with aqueous systems, air avidity, bond strength at the mineral surface, interfacial concentration of the collector, and diffusion rate of the formed complex from the air-water interface eliminated many as unsuitable for this purpose. Preliminary investigations were completed of possible collector designs consisting of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon radicals attached to stable combinations of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and halogen electrophilic centers, Fig. 1.Tests were made to determine melting point spans, solubility of mineral-collector combinations in various solvents, reactions with soluble uranium salts, contact angles, and floatability by semi-quantitative beaker methods.' Contact angle determinations were not too useful because of the fine particle sizes of available mineral samples. From the foregoing study it appeared that nitrogen-sulfur electrophilic centers coupled with straight-chain saturated alkyl hydrocarbon radicals would hold the most promise for floating secondary uranium minerals. As the dithiocarbamate compounds can be made to combine these attributes they were selected for further study. INTRODUCTION In ore beneficiation one of the simplest methods of mineral concentration is hand picking to remove either the ore or the waste material from a moving table or conveyor belt. Ore Sorting Equipment may be defined as equipment for mechanized picking. This type of equipment has been used successfully over the past thirty years or so to beneficiate ores of various types in particle mesh sizes between 1mm and 200mm.. at throughputs of up to 150 tonnes per hour. In general for ore sorting to be a consideration the ore and the waste material must be well liberated in the feed to the sorter (that is into practically discrete particles of ore and waste). The larger the liberation size the more likely sorting is to be cost effective. Correct selection of ore sorting equipment is most important and often special machine features are developed for an individual application. Sorter performance can be best determined by extensive testwork of representative ore at design tonnage on prototype or preferably on production model sorting machines. ADVANTAGES OF SORTING ORE The four main advantages of sorting ore are: Reduced milling cost. Reduced processing cost. Higher overall recovery. Reduced transportation costs. Reduced Milling Cost With sorters installed the milling plant following the sorter is generally smaller and hence less costly to install and operate as it only has to handle the sorter product. However this benefit is somewhat offset by the increased cost of the screening and washing plant prior to the sorter and the cost of the sorting plant itself. Reduced Processing Cost As there is less material of higher grade presented to the concentrating plant following the sorter, this plant will generally be smaller and less costly to construct and operate than a plant treating the total quantity of material. A RESIDENCE of 14 years in the Republic of Colombia, spent in almost continuous traveling and prospecting-trips, has given me an intimate knowledge of the resources of that wonderful country. The man who best knows Colombia is unquestionably General Rafael Reyes, President of the Republic for the past three years, and with seven years more to serve in his present term. Such is the strength of his personality and the wisdom of his policies that his term of office will no doubt endure as long as he is willing to serve. The vastly improved economic situation and the brilliant outlook for Colombia are so directly due to the influence of President Reyes that a few lines concerning him. will not be amiss, if they serve towards a better understanding of his personality. Born of a distinguished ancestry in the mountains of Boyaca, he is now 57 years old, just the age of his friend Porfirio Diaz when be began the work which has placed Mexico in the rank of great modern nations. It was Reyes who came to Washington to protest against the action of the government of the United States of America in reference to the establishment of the Republic of Panama, and, without entering into a discussion of this affair, it can be fairly said that there was not an American in Colombia whose feelings of justice were. not outraged at the government action and subsequent refusal to submit the matter to the impartial judgment of the' Hague. President Reyes is an accomplished linguist, speaking English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. He has a remarkably. powerful voice, which can readily be heard by a large assemblage. This paper describing the mining practice at the Spring Hill mine of the Montana Mines Corporation, Helena, Mont., is one of a series issued by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts. Its purpose is to summarize improved methods whereby lower costs have recently been obtained. These improvements are principally the adoption of a modified sublevel stoping method of mining the use of grizzlies underground improvements in haulage, and rage bonuses. The Sprint Hill, Trine is situated in Grizzly Gulch, 3 miles southwest of the city of Helena. Helena is on the links of the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern Railways; and the East Helena smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co. to which the concentrates from the mine are shipped, is but 6 miles east of Helena. The mine is probing 150 to 200 tons of gold ore per day, with an underground crew of about 40 men.

POSSIBLE postwar trends of the more important world minerals will be determined in part by their present world position and by the acts and forces that have operated during the war period, so it is desirable first to review briefly what has been happening in the foreign field of metals and minerals. When we first entered this war we of the mineral profession were all acutely conscious of our lack of strategic minerals and other materials, which had to be imported in great quantities-minerals such as manganese, chrome, tin, mercury, nickel, and antimony. But we realized also that we had to acquire vast quantities of those minerals of which we had thought we were bountifully supplied. Our assumed domestic abundances turned out to be woefully deficient, and demands also arose for new minerals never before produced in large quantities. Some threescore minerals entered the strategic list of our imports. Ores from new sources had to be sought, developed, and transported. Tonnages in the millions of such bulk materials as zinc, lead, copper, chrome, and manganese flowed to feed our war efforts. Sparsely distributed minerals such as tin, mercury, antimony, tungsten, cobalt, mica, and corundum had to be lured from their rock lairs in greatly increased quantities to feed the hungry maw of war industry, and the rare minerals such as tantalite, columbite, beryl, and quartz crystals had to be developed and procured in quantities never before dreamed of. New uses such as radio and radar created demands for many minerals formerly thought of only as adornments of museum collections and not as pressing industrial minerals. Such minerals were never before mined in quantity.

As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using crosslinked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganrte, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The iminodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pryolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethano lamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating cross- linked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dupersing agent.

Although researchers have struggled to replicate Heinrich’s safety triangle findings (Heinrich 1931) for various reasons (e.g., no access to his original database and it is unclear if the database was of a single establishment/operation or for an entire industry), the occupational safety community has continued to adopt and expand the applications of this theory (e.g., McSween 2003). Within the mining industry, the potential exists for operations and companies to use concepts from the safety triangle as a way to inform or challenge the practices employed within their health and safety management systems (HSMS) to prevent incidents (Backlund 2016). This paper considers data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s databases and demonstrates the validity of applying the safety triangle theory at the mine level. The results support the use of this theory and demonstrate that lower severity incidents can predict fatalities in a subsequent year where significant nuances and caveats to applying the theory are identified and discussed.

Large amount of rare earth metals is stored in the used electric products. Hitachi has started to develop the environment-friendly process for rare earth metals recovery from used magnets. We report here the environmental impact of our process, in comparison with the conventional recycle process utilizing solvent extraction. As an evaluation method, Life-cycle Impact assessment Method based on Endpoint modeling ver.2 (LIME2) developed by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan is applied. It was found that the environmental impact of the new process was more than that of the conventional process. For further reduction of its environmental impact, minimization of energy consumption to operate the equipment was most effective. Decreasing the amount of magnesium, used as an extractant, and the improvement of the extraction rate of rare earth metals were also considered as specific options for reducing energy consumption in the plant development.

"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

It is practically fifteen years since stellite was first introduced into industry, and since then the progress made in its manufacture has been so rapid and the number of successful applications so varied that it was considered a review of the more important phases would be of general interest. Stellite is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy, containing approximately 2. 75 per cent carbon. The high percentage of carbon is necessary for the requisite hardness and resistance to wear at ordinary temperatures, whereas the tungsten is essential to impart hardness at a red heat. Chromium imparts hardness and strength, and cobalt renders the alloys more resistant to oxidation. The metals cobalt and chromium are completely soluble in all proportions, both in the liquid and solid state, the equilibrium diagram showing a minimum in the solubility curve at approximately 50 per cent cobalt and l,340°C. Cobalt and tungsten are completely soluble up to 40 per cent tungsten, which is beyond the limit of the; tungsten content of stellite alloys. In the presence of carbon, carbides are formed, which are essential in stellite possessing good cutting or wearing properties.

A novel rotary triboelectrostatic separator has been developed and patented recently at the University of Kentucky with unique features, including a high efficiency rotary charger, charger electrification, laminar air flow, etc. A parametric study has been performed with a coal combustion fly ash sample to investigate the effects of major operating parameters on the process performance. Most significant operating variables and optimum conditions were identified. Separation tests performed with four fly ash samples indicated that the rotary triboelectrostatic separator showed effective fly ash separation.

"In the Timmins area, a close spatial and chronological association exists between gold deposits and two major stratabound carbonate-rich members and related quartz-feldspar porphyries. Synvo/canic and metamorphogenic are the two main types of mineralization recognized. Synvolcanic ores include the stratiform quartz-ankerite ""veins"", pyritic carbonates and chert-carbonate-tuff sedimentary rocks and epigenetic ventrelated breccias and stringer zones. Metamorphogenic ores consist of quartz-carbonate fracture fillings in dilatant zones developed during various phases of regional deformation and metamorphism. They are classically epigenetic in character.The evidence suggests a primary syngenetic enrichment of gold on the ocean floor and in vent areas during submarine felsic volcanism and related exhalative-hydrothermal activity followed by further enrichment into quartz-carbonate stockworks during regional deformation and greenschist metamorphism.Although normally thin (a few hundred metres), carbonate members in Archean volcanic terrain represent intense hydrothermal activity which could have transported and enriched gold. They should be used to locate fossil vents and structurally favourable zones where economic concentrations of gold may be found."

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.
