Successful evaluation and exploitation of resources and reserves relies on the collection of high quality sample data. The quality of the sample data must be maintained through the application of a robust quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) program, including documentation of sampling procedures, training of sampling personnel and the regular monitoring of control samples. However, the application of QAQC programs in the minerals industry is often poor and the purpose misunderstood. It is all too common to have good quality control data collected, but no analysis work carried out until after drilling is completed. In a lengthy drill program, this can lead to problems not being discovered and corrected as they happen. Moreover, rectifying problems afterwards will be costly in terms of time and money, if not impossible. The consequences of poor quality sample data are many and include such effects as over- or underestimation of block grades, misclassification of ore and waste, and lower confidence in the resource/reserve models. The purpose of this paper is to highlight, using case studies, the importance of good QAQC practices to monitor the quality of sampling and laboratory sample preparation and analysis.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with phosphate companies in the Florida land-pebble area, made a comprehensive study of the waste clays, or "phosphate slimes," produced in the mining of phosphate rock in Florida. These slimes represent a significant ecological problem and a major deterrent to effective land recovery in the phosphate-mining areas. Physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies were made of slime samples submitted by 15 of the 16 plants in Florida in an effort to identify factors that prevent successful consolidation of the slimes and subsequent recovery of the mined lands. Results of these studies indicated that the clay mineral attapulgite, a hydrated magnesium silicate, was primarily responsible for the very poor settling characteristics of the slimes, and that the quantity of attapulgite in the slimes effectively controlled the settling rate, pulp density of terminal solids, viscosity, percent solids of filter cake, and flocculant requirements.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. With sophisticated process control techniques, supervision of the mill line is reduced to an occasional inspection by the shift supervisor. When the variables in the grinding circuit are stabilized using the sensors and controllers as discussed, the over-all grinding circuit is maintained at its optimum grinding load level, with ample protection against under-and overloading."

"Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting is a novel technology which combines vertical direct-chill (DC) casting with a high shear device directly immersed in the sump for in situ microstructural control. In this paper, the solidification mechanism of DC casting under varying conditions is discussed. The temperature profiles in the sump were measured under the steady state casting conditions by using sacrificing thermocouples. Detailed comparisons of the derived thermal condition are made. The individual role of grain refiner additions, natural thermosolutal convection and forced convection in the sump and the interplay of these factors in determining the solidification structures of DC cast billets are discussed. The MC-DC casting technology can be used to control microstructural constituents and casting defects in DC cast billets/ingots by in situ manipulating of the thermal and fluid flow conditions.INTRODUCTION Direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium, has been the essential commercial process for producing feedstock suitable for subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling or forging. Fine and equiaxed grain structures in the as-cast billets/ingots are required to enable a fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and microporosity. This leads to higher productivity, more cost-effective homogenisation and more efficient downstream thermomechanical processing. The addition of chemical inoculants has been the standard industrial operation prior to casting for grain refinement of Al alloys. However, it has been established that less than 1% of the grain refiner particles added actually act as heterogeneous nuclei to refine the grain structures, showing a very low grain refining efficiency (Greer, Bunn, Tronche, Evans, & Bristow, 2000). Moreover, the remaining particles from the grain refiner addition in the final casting may cause surface defects during downstream processing. A major issue of the metallurgical quality of large sized ingots/billets is the non-uniformity of microstructures even with chemical grain refiner additions. This is due to the fact that the grain structure formed in the different zones of the billet depends on the local chemical composition and local cooling rate. The local cooling rate can vary from 0.4~1 K/s at the centre of the billet to around 10–20 K/s at its surface zone (Nadella, Eskin, Du, & Katgerman, 2008). The large thermal gradient along radial direction between billet surface and interior of the melt during conventional DC casting induces thermal stress and cold cracking even with grain refiner addition. Therefore the control of casting defects, such as macrosegregation, porosity, cold/hot cracking and distortion of the billets/slabs, etc., is still challenging in industry, causing high scrap rate of DC cast ingots/billets even with grain refiner addition."

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of various underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine (RBM). After the removal of coal or rock, the remaining strata may be subject to fall, either from overhead (the roof) or from the side (the rib). One method used in underground coal-mines to prevent failures requires the installation of roof bolts. The roof bolting machine operator trams the machine to the required location, drills a hole into the strata, and then installs a roof bolt, supporting the roof or the rib, as the case may be. Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel radiates a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH is developing bit and chuck isolators to reduce vibration, and thus noise radiation of the drill steel, with the longer-term goal of reducing roof bolting machine operator noise exposure. Laboratory testing has shown that operator ear sound pressure levels may be reduced by 3 to 7 dB(A), depending upon the test configuration and drilling media.

The thermodynamic of nickel production from laterite ore and from sulfide concentrate can be analyzed using PO2 - PS2 diagram of the Ni-Fe-S-0-SiO2 system. The procedure of the diagram computation is suggested and the diagrams for various temperature and Fe/Ni ratio are calculated. Three-suffix Margules equations are used for the calculation of the thermodynamic properties of three solutions: liquid matte, liquid slag and solid Fe-Ni alloy. The diagrams are used for the considerations about direct one-stage metallic nickel production.

This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

In December 1977, a large pillar was removed by blasthole mining methods at lnco's Creighton No. 3 mine. Although the 2,363.000-ton blast was not a size record for a single underground blast at Inco, it did represent a significant departure from conventional blasthole mining. In terms of the application of nominal 6-inch-diameter boreholes underground, coupled with bulk slurry explosives, the magnitude of the blast is considered a first and very important development. The application of large-diameter boreholes in underground operations was first tried successfully in 1973. Since that time over 13/4 million feet have been drilled in this adaptation of an open-pit technique to underground operations. The blast, which required 708 holes, totalling 131,500 feet of drilling, was loaded in a six-week period, using special slurry handling techniques developed jointly by Inco and CIL. Inco operating and engineering personnel consider this application of large boreholes and slurry explosives for blasthole mining a very important milestone in modern mining technology.

In pursuit of innovative methods to improve mining productivity, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of inorganic salts as drilling fluid additives for penetration enhancement. Laboratory diamond drilling tests were performed on Westerly Granite with aluminum chloride solutions and on Sioux Quartzite with aluminum nitrate and aluminum, calcium, sodium, and zirconium chloride solutions as drilling fluid additives. These drilling results were compared with the average drilling performance using distilled, deionized water on Sioux Quartzite (12 replicate tests) and Westerly Granite (3 replicate tests). Maximum in-creases in penetration per given time and bit life were obtained when drilling with zero point of charge (ZPC) concentration solutions of each additive. For Sioux Quartzite, maximum increases in penetration and bit life ranged from 96 to 115 pct and 64 to 99 pct, respectively. For Westerly Granite, maximum increases in penetration of 155 and 165 pct and bit life of 109 and 136 pct were obtained at or near ZPC aluminum chloride concentrations of quartz (7.3 x 10-7 mol/L AIC13) and alkali feldspars (1.1 to 1.5 x 10-6 mol/L AIC13), respectively. This simultaneous increase in penetration per time together with extended bit life should result in increased productivity and reduced bit costs.

The first step in the quarrying of granite, following removal of any overburden material, involves the freeing of large blocks from the formation. For many years the use of explosives was the accepted method of obtaining these blocks. Even today there are operations where this is considered to be the most economical method even though it does result in a high percentage of damaged stone. In more recent times the preferred procedure at most quarries has been to produce a continuous vertical cut or slot completely around the block to be separated. Originally, this was done by drilling a series of closely spaced holes around the block and breaking the web between the holes with a chisel-like tool known as a broaching bar. The machine used in this mechanical method of producing the relief slot is known as the channel bar. The modern day approach to the production of continuous channels was introduced to the industry around 1955 by the Linde Division of Union Carbide Corporation. The method employs a small rocket - jet burner producing a high temperature, high velocity exhaust flame which when directed against the granite causes it to disintegrate. This method, which has come to be known as "Jet Channeling", is now used by practically every major granite producer in the United States and Canada.

In these days of intense competition for the domestic fuel market much is heard of the low efficiencies with which solid fuels, and most particularly bituminous coal, are burned in domestic heating equipment. In contrast to the every-day operating efficiencies of 85 and 90 per cent in large, central, electric-generating stations, efficiencies of 50 per cent and lower are cited for the hand-fired home furnace. Just as the miles per gallon of gasoline is only one of the factors that determine the cost of operation of an automobile, so the thermal efficiency is only one factor in the cost of domestic or other heating. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the total costs of domestic heating by various fuels and types of equipment, to determine the relative importance of efficiency and other factors, and to discuss what this signifies relative to the future of the use of fuels in the home. Factors That Govern the Choice of Fuel and Burning Equipment A rational, intelligent selection of fuel and equipment for heating the home would consider two groups of factors: Cost Factors Convenience Factors 1. Cost of potential heat in fuel 1. Attention 2. Efficiency of combustion and heat transfer 2. Dirt 3. Fixed charges 3. Noise a. Interest b. Depreciation c. Repairs 4. Power costs 5. Cost of handling ash and refuse. As just stated, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relative importance of the five cost factors and not to discuss particularly the relative total costs of different methods of heating. Dynamic Load Test (DLT) on driven piles has been performed routinely all over the world. In several recent projects, even 100% testing has become a norm where every single pile is dynamically load tested. In these cases, most piles are of uniform sections, making the field analysis (CASE method) straight forward. The CASE method, which has been used for the last 50 years, however, is only applicable to uniform piles to monitor pile driving stresses as well as pile capacities. Signal matching analysis can handle different configurations. However, the analysis used to require user inputs (i.e., non-automatic). Manual signal matching analysis, which can solve non-uniform solutions, traditionally takes hour(s) to complete for one blow. As such, the real-time pile driving stresses and resistances had traditionally been relying upon the CASE method, using typical range of CASE damping (JC). Until 2021, due to the lack of a rigorous instant signal matching analysis for non-uniform piles, no tool was available to help engineers evaluate non-uniform piles in real-time. An inexperienced field engineer may overlook this shortcoming when evaluating peak driving stresses. Furthermore, ultimate bearing resistances for non-uniform piles may require further evaluation to account for the non-uniformity of piles if relying on the CASE method. This paper highlights recent advances in instant Signal Matching Analysis on non-uniform piles, allowing field engineers to monitor stresses and resistances of non-uniform piles during driving.

The disposal of tailings has become a greater issue due to the changing economics of mineral extraction. The processing of lower grade deposits and tougher environmental regulations has led to the selection process for tailings disposal options becoming more complicated. Current selection methods are too time consuming or too easily manipulated for inexperienced users to use successfully. This paper examines a different method for the initial selection of a tailings disposal system, using a numerical system that was introduced into the mining method selection field. The numerical method system was compiled by reviewing previous work done on the positive and negative aspects of the tailings disposal methods used by the coal and metallurgical mining industries. Assessing the common trends and design aspects of each of the methods was undertaken and a ranking was designed to explain how well suited the tailings disposal methods are to a situation. The tool successfully analysed sites using common data to indicate methods for disposal that would have provided minimal technical problems, low environmental risk and been practically possible. The tool also proved successful in identifying critical areas that would need further investigation. This new system was tested on some disaster case studies from around the world in order to show that it could have successfully selected a different method for tailings disposal that would have prevented the disaster.

DIFFERENT authors1 ' have been engaged in meas-uring the vapor pressure of pure cobalt. The results of their measurements satisfy the expected temperature dependence of vapor pressure and are in mutual agreement, with the exception of the results by De Dyk Man and ~esmejanov.~ The latter authors, by using the effusion method, have achieved considerably higher values than other workers. By using the isotope exchange method they obtained much lower values than other authors. The determination of thermodynamic functions of the binary Ni-Co system was carried out, as far as we know, only by De Dyk Man and Nesmejanov.4 This determination was based on extremely low values of vapor pressure over pure cobalt obtained by the isotope exchange method. Therefore we considered it useful to repeat these measurements. Furthermore, the reliable values of thermodynamic functions should complement the migration characteristics, the inner magnetic field data obtained by Miissbauer effect measurements, specific heat data, and the K effect and positron annihilation characteristics that have been achieved for the Ni-Co system in the Institute of Metallurgy of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno.5-9 The measurements in this paper were performed by the isotope exchange method. In this method, as has been shown by analysis,10-'3 the vaporization rate, w, can be calculated from the relation w = k/1oSw [1] i0Sw) [1] where L, is the activity per unit mass of the source, S is the area of evaporation, k is the tangent at the point t = 0 to the curve giving the radioactivity de-pendence of the target vs annealing time, t, and wis the probability for the tracer atom condensation on the target surface. The value for cc. can be obtained from the equation w = a + 2P(l-a) [2] where P is Clausing's coefficient and a is the condensation coefficient. In the present work the cylinder shaped containers for annealing the samples were used, characterized by the ratio 1:d = 1.06. Here 1 is the length and d the diameter of the container. For this ratio P = 0.514 and w =0.5, and w is independent of the condensation coefficient. The vaporization rate is related to the vapor pressure p by the relation where R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temperature, and M is the molecular weight of the component investigated. Measurements of the vapor pressure of the i component over the pure metal, p!, and the alloy, pi, at the given temperature and composition enable one to calculate the thermodynamic activity of this component from the equation ai=pi/pi [4] is and the activity coefficient ri=ai/xi [5] xi where xi is the molar fraction of the investigated alloy component. EXPERIMENTAL Evaporization rate measurements were carried out with pure cobalt and eight different Ni-Co alloys, which were kindly delivered by the Centre National de Recherches Me'tallurgiques Liege, Belgium. The composition of the alloys is given in Table I. The cobalt used in these alloys contained the following impurities: 0.016 wt pct Fe, 0.014 wt pct Cu, 0.01 wt pct Mn. Other elements were present in much lower concentrations. From the melts, samples in the form of small cylinders of 12 mm in diam were ma-chined. DURING the past year the iron and steel industry of the world as a whole operated on a satisfactory basis. No discoveries nor new processes of outstanding importance were announced either here or abroad, although rumors of such were persistent. In general, the efforts of operating and research men in the iron and steel industry seemed to be confined to improving quality and reducing cost, not a new aim, for the same efforts have been noted in nearly all of the annual reviews of the industry for at least fifty years. Most published papers on blast furnace or steel-making practice were of minor importance, at least when judged by the criterion of radical change in process or product.
