The processing capacity, ease of use, and reliability are featuring Metso?s state-of-the-art cone crushers. Crushing is a complicated process affected by numerous parameters. The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Metso has launched a new series of cone crushers HP3, HP4 and HP5 that are all able to work in high density crushing applications The test results and evidence from over 300 installations clearly prove the effectiveness and importance of high density crushing. The efficient and safe design of room-and-pillar coal mines still remains as one of the pressing problems facing the mining industry in the United States. Although much research has been directed to stability of mine roofs and coal pillars, no generally-accepted design method has been formulated. This paper presents a concise procedure for an improved design of room-and-pillar coal mines. Developed as a result of a three-year research effort, the methodology includes essentially three aspects: (i) determination of stable roof spans; (ii) determination of the strength of coal pillars; and (iii) determination of safety factors for room-and pillar coal mining in the United States. It is shown that the presented approach will lead to a greater recovery of coal by a more economical, yet safe, mining operation. Design charts and tables are presented and a step-by-step design procedure for practical mining engineers is explained. Several examples are included demonstrating the use of the proposed design procedure for room-and-pillar coal mines.

INVESTIGATION of the methods of analyses for magnetite and ilmenite in the Otanmaki iron-titanium ore and respective mill products has resulted in certain improvements in the methods conventionally employed. The outcome of the investigations is summarized as follows: 1—Development of a diamond-drill core analyser for the determination of magnetic susceptibility of drill cores containing magnetic minerals. 2—Development of a magnetite-ilmenite analyser for pulverized products. 3—Development of a potentiometric method of chemical analysis for the determination of iron, vanadium, and titanium in succeeding steps from one test sample. 4—Proposal for a continuous and automatic magnetite assay method. Diamond-Drill Core Analyser The conventional method of assaying diamond-drill cores consists of splitting the cores, pulverizing them and running chemical analyses on representative samples. The physical properties of magnetic minerals, however, offer an entirely different approach to obtain similar final result by the measurement of respective magnetic susceptibilities in a properly designed instrument. This instrument is shown in Fig. 1. Essentially it consists of a magnetic unit, A, and of a meter unit, B. On top of A is a slot where a piece of diamond-drill core C is visible. The magnitude of disturbance in the original magnetic field caused by the magnetic minerals in the drill core can be observed from the microammeter. This reading is a function of the combined susceptibilities of all magnetic grains in the magnetic field. The magnetic unit is built of E-sheets of a shell transformer, as shown in Fig. 2. The primary coil and two identical secondary coils are wound around the central leg and end legs, respectively. The drill core under examination is placed into one of the air gaps as shown in Fig. 2. The number of ampere-turns of primary coil excited by 50 or 60-cycle ac give a maximum induction of about 600 gauss in the air gaps. The secondary coils are connected in series in the opposite direction. Thus their voltages compensate each other if no drill core exists in the air gap or if the susceptibility of the drill core is equal to zero. As soon as the susceptibility becomes greater than zero, the balance of the magnetic circuit is disturbed, resulting in increased voltage in the terminals of coil 1 and in a respective decrease of voltage in the terminals of coil 2. The voltage difference thus produced is a function of the effective susceptibility of the drill core. If the magnetic grains in the drill core are unevenly distributed, the voltage difference varies as the core is rotated around its own axis. The voltage difference is measured with a Bren-tan0 tube voltmeter. If extreme sensitiveness is desired, the established symmetry of the magnetic circuit does not allow reduction of the 0-voltage difference far enough. Biooxidation of an ore heap containing only a few percent of sulfide minerals requires insertion of a very large amount of oxygen either by natural air convection, forced air ventilation or gaseous diffusion. While shallow heaps, those with lateral distances much greater than their height, are of great interest for many heaped ore processing operations, natural convection is often ineffective for oxidizing them because of inadequate lateral flow into the heap's interior. Oxygen can diffuse into a shallow heap from its upper, horizontal surface in contact with air. Oxygen diffuses through the air-filled void space within the heap, driven by the oxygen concentration gradient resulting from internal oxygen depletion caused by mineral oxidation. Oxygen diffusion, coupled with the chemical reaction kinetics oxidizing the sulfide minerals, is analyzed for conditions of rapid mineral oxidation kinetics, requiring small mineral grain sizes, and for typical ore heap biooxidation parameters. Practical limits on heap heights are presented for effective biooxidation of the sulfide minerals within times of interest for heap biooxidation of refractory sulfide gold ores, one to three years.

During the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in the number and size of experimental ovens used for carbonization research. Although many were originally intended principally for studies of coal expansion, current practice usually includes determinations of the properties of the experimental cokes. With respect to size and shatter characteristics, the cokes from the larger experimental ovens closely approximate those from duplicate charges carbonized in commercial ovens; however, they are consistently lighter and frequently less resistant to degradation by abrasive forces. To minimize these differences, some operators dry the experimental charges before carbonization. The resulting higher dry coal charge densities do, in fact, yield cokes with gravities closely approximating those produced commercially from the same coal or blend but without drying. The drying of the experimental charges may be criticized on the grounds that it represents a departure from commercial practice and may result in oxidation of the samples; for these reasons, the practice has not been universally adopted.

The setting of tasks for the process control of coal cleaning, and in this connection the requirements for instrumentation can be classified into the following three fields: - Monitoring the operation of individual units, or process steps, - Control of units or process steps, - Control of the entire coal cleaning process with the intention of optimizing the operation and the profitability of the process. Instrumentation is affected by the type of cleaning processes. For introduction Figure 1 shows the simplified flow sheet of coal preparation which is usual in the German Ruhr District and in which desirable places for the measurement of ash, moisture and sulfur content are marked. The preparation plant is supplied with run-of-mine coal from the shaft via a homogenization facility. In a first step of primary classifying the raw feed coal is screened at about 10 mm. The raw coarse coal ( = 10 mm) is sorted by jig washers or heavy-medium separators. the raw fine coal (< 10 mm) at first is pneumatically sized at about 0.5 to 0.75 mm. The fines, the aspirated dust, are a finished partial product which will be added to the final metallurgical or steam coal. The material 10 to 0.75 mm subsequently is sorted in fine coal jigs and dewatered in centrifuges. The sludge obtained with the wet cleaning processes is dewatered in thickeners and fed to the flotation. Concentrate and tailings are dewatered by filters or bowl centrifuges and by chamber filter presses or belt filter presses, respectively. The partial products coarse coal, fine coal, flotation concentrate, aspirated dust, and middlings are blended to result in the sellable products metallurgical and steam coal.

Densities of melts 0f the lime-iron oxide-silica system in contact with solid iron have been measured by the maximum bubble pressure method in the temperature range 1250° to 1440°C and the composition range 0 to 40 mol pct lime, 15 to 100 mol pct iron oxide, and 0 to 55 mol pct silica. Densities range from 4.65 g cm 3 for wustite at 1440°C to 2.75 g cm-&apos; at 1350°C for a melt containing 30 mol pct lime, 20 mol pct iron oxide, and 50 mol pct silica. The results are interpreted in terms of a postulate that the melts can be regarded as a random array of oxygen ions in which regions of local order exist to satisfy the coordination requirements 0.f the cations. An understanding of the nature of metallurgical slags is basic to the development of a sound theoretical description of heavy metallurgical extractive and refining processes. Because these liquids are complex, direct measurements of their properties has not thrown much light on their structure. This has led to the approach of measuring the properties of simpler liquids, and building up their complexity until slag compositions are reached. In this way the density of liquid iron silicates was measured in a previous study1 and the present work represents a further stage in this synthesis. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of density was the maximum bubble pressure method. Details of the apparatus and procedure were similar to those previously reported,&apos; with the exception that a constant voltage transformer was used to supply the power input to the furnace and six silicon carbide resistance elements were used in place of the molybdenum winding. With these modifications melt temperature could be maintained within 1 centigrade degree during the course of a run. The silica used to prepare the melts was washed natural quartz ignited at 1000°C; wustite was prepared by air-melting A.R. grade ferric oxide in an iron crucible and lime was prepared by air ignition, at 1000°C, of weighed quantities of A.R. grade calcium carbonate, previously air-dried at 110°C. The finely ground constituents were intimately mixed in a glass ball mill prior to melting. Temperatures quoted are accurate to * 5°C and the standard deviation of the density values, calculated by the method of least squares, ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pet. However, replicate determinations of density on different melts of the same nominal composition at the same nominal temperature did not vary by more than 1 pct, Table I, and this figure has been taken as an estimate of the accuracy of the density results. The density of carbon tetra-chloride was also measured as a check on the absolute performance of the experimental method. At 20°C a value of 1.593 * 0.002 g cm"3 was obtained; this compares with the literature value2 of 1.595 g cm"3. Results of experiments designed to measure the dependence of the density of lime-iron oxide-silica melts, in contact with solid iron, on composition and temperature are shown in Table I. Because iron sometimes precipitated in the sample during quenching, the Fe203 chemical analyses were only poorly reproducible and should be taken as a guide rather than as absolute values. Fig. 1 shows the data from various sources for the density of liquid iron silicates and Fig. 2 shows isodensity contours at 1410°C for lime-iron oxide-silica melts, calculated by graphical interpolation of smoothed curves drawn through the experimental results, together with the 1400°C results of Adachi and ogino3 and Pope1 and Esin.4 Fig. 3 shows the isothermal variation with composition of the volume of melt per gram ion of oxygen at 1410°C and Fig. 4 shows regions in which the temperature coefficient of this volume is negative, positive, or negligible (<0.005 cm3 deg-I). DISCUSSION a) Disparity Between Reported Density Results. Consider the system iron oxide-silica, the results for which are summarized in Fig. 1. Although there is some difference in the temperatures at which the various densities apply, this difference is not sufficiently large to account for the observed discrepancies. The reliability of the present results for the low-silica region has been confirmed by measurement of the density of liquid wustite by three different techniques. At 1410°C the density measured by a balanced-column method was 4.55 g cm"3, by a combination balanced-column and gas-densitometer method 4.59 g emd3, and by a pycnometer method 4.53 g cm"3. Schenck, Frohberg, and Hoffermann&apos; have also reported a value of 4.55 g cm"3 for the density of liquid wustite at 1400°C. It must be concluded, therefore, that neither Pope1

Many gold ores which are not only submicroscopic but also rich in arsenic and organic carbon, for example Dongbeizhai Mine, have been found in china. These ores belong to the most refractory ores The key to the recovery of gold from these ores is preoxidation. Dongbeizhai ores have been tested with biooxidation, chlorination, double oxidation, acidic and alkaline pressure oxidation, catalytic oxidation, NITROX and roasting. To date it appears that either roasting or pressure oxidation is optimal. It is suggested that the flotation-roasting (or pressure oxidation)-CIL process should be used to treat this type of ore.

Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

The present discussion focuses on the developmental directions of eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock dump, by using acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain as an example. Based on the analysis of site factors, the current slope ecological restoration technologies of domestic and international and local practices have been integrated into the eco-restoration of acid mine waste rock in Shuilong Mountain. A set of suitable slope Eco-restoration technologies have been formulated locally for acid mine waste rock of Shuilong Mountain, which include establishing green barrier, implementing ecology buffer zones, selecting suitable plant species and combined seeding and tube-stock planting. As with many new technologies, the rapid growth in solution mining for uranium has created uncertainties regarding the environmental impact of mining operations. In solution mining, the largest area of concern is the impact of the process on the quality of ground water supplies. As a result, a rapid and reliable technique of detecting lixiviant excursions is desirable. Such a method would replace the periodic sampling technique and should provide a more or less continuous monitoring method. To this end, resistivity techniques were evaluated as an alternate means of tracking lixiviant movement. A program was devised which had five specific tasks. These were: (1) evaluation of the techniques, (2) development of the most promising technique or techniques, (3) field testing of the techniques, (4) testing of the BuMines probe, and (5) reporting. The result of the analytical and field work is that various resistivity/ resistance techniques do provide a means of detecting lixiviant movement in Northern Wyoming. Surface and downhole galvanic surveys and controlled source audio magnetotellurics (AMT) were evaluated. All three techniques showed some degree of success.

"Pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field have been applied to the bainite transformation of Cr5 steel. Three groups of experiments were conducted. In the first group, ordinary resistance furnace was used for heat treatment. The Cr5 specimens were rapidly heated up to austenitization temperature 940 °C, held for 20 min, air cooled to bainite transformation temperature 350 °C, held for 10, 20, or 40 min and then air cooled to room temperature. The second and the third group shared the same temperature-time curve with that of the first group, but their heat resources came from the Joule heat produced by pulsed current. 1.5 T pulsed magnetic field was exerted on the third group specimens when they were held at 350 °C, but the second group specimens did not undergo the treatment of magnetic field. It was found that both pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field obviously retarded the bainite transformation. The phenomena were discussed in terms ofliterature results.IntroductionApplying pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology are very pronnsmg ways to change the microstructure of materials by affecting the phase transformation process. People had found that pulsed current dramatically influences the behaviors of materials, for example, electromigration effect [l], the solidification of metals and alloys [2, 3], electroplasticity [4, 5], crystallization of amorphous alloys [6], healing of metal materials [7] and so on. As to pulsed magnetic field technology, a lot of effort had been spent on grain refinement in solidification of metals [8, 9], recrystallization of cold-worked metals and alloys [10] and Fe-based alloys solid-state phase transformation [11, 12]. Though application of pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology have proliferated in recent years, investigation on their effects on solid/solid phase transformation, especially bainite transformation, is lacking. The mines in the eastern part of the now active region of the Tri-State zinc district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma have unusually acid water, which during periods of moderate or no rainfall is used in the mills to replace losses from evaporation, seepage-, and tailings disposal. Its use has caused difficulties by corrosion of equipment and by interference with flotation. The growing importance of flotation, which requires good water, and the increasing troubles caused by the corrosion of the milling equipment have prompted the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation With the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo., to investigate the action of the waters on flotation and to undertake to develop means of obviating their harmful effects. The Government of Canada recently passed a new regulation to control the liquid discharges from metal mines in Canada. The Metal Mining Effluent Regulation of the Federal Fisheries Act will come into force within the next six months. As a result the Ontario Regional Office of Environment Canada has developed a compliance promotion program to accompany the new regulation. How the mines implement the regulation will be key to its success. This paper will briefly outline the components of this regulation, including the reporting structure, the discharge parameters and limits, as well as the requirement for the mines to conduct long-term environmental effects monitoring on their effluent discharge. The presentation will give a brief account of the compliance promotion program, and then focus on the spill trends from Ontario mining operations. The province of Ontario has the largest concentration of metal mining operations in the country with approximately 40 active mines.

The 26th Peruvian Mining Convention (Convención de Ingeneieros de Minas del Perú) was held Sept. 15 through 19, 2003, in Arequipa. The convention was sponsored by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (Instituto de Ingeneiros de Minas del Peru). The Institute has been organizing these events since 1954. They are now held every other year. The conventions spotlight Peru’s mineral resources and have contributed to the tremendous growth of the Peruvian mining industry. This year’s meeting consisted of technical sessions, forums, field trips and social activities. It was held at the Tecsup Institute of Technology of Arequipa. More than 3,000 mining professionals attended. As always, the meeting was well organized, and participants expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for another successful meeting.

This appendix documents the mathematical approach to deriving the components of change presented in this report. The formulation closely follows that contained in Chapter IV of the documentation for the BEA 1977 Input-Output Tables.&apos; The basic elements for the calculations include the "use" matrix (U), the "make" matrix (M), and any of the ten columns of final demand (generically represented by the symbol y). The use matrix contains information about changes in the technological processes of production, while the make matrix describes the nature of secondary product production in each industry. We adhere to BEA conventions in maintaining careful distinctions between commodity output (c) and industry output (x). The industry-by-industry 1-0 tables supplied by NYU for use in this analysis are square matrices, with the number of commodities and the number of industries both equal to 85. The BLS table for 1982 (commodity by industry) was aggregated and adjusted to be consistent with the earlier tables. The three basic steps for estimating components of change proceed as follows for each column of final demand. 1) Calculate the actual change in output of each commodity for each of the four time periods: 1963-72, 1972-77, 1977-82, and 1963-82.
