Due to deposit shape and dimension, narrow vein makes reserve modeling, geological control, stope design, drill and blasting more challenging. It needs high standard quality control as errors can be created easily, which could cause significant amount of ore loss or dilution. From channel sampling, survey control, reserve modeling, drill hole design, blasting, communication with underground drillers to backfill, this paper illustrated every step and its quality control of a long hole stope mining. Compared to other narrow vein mining methods (cut and fill and shrinkage), long hole stoping means higher production, less labor, and significantly lower cost when deposit characteristics allowed.

A method for the chemical differentiation of oxidized cobalt from sulphide cobalt in complex mine and concentrator products is of considerable interest to a number of mining companies throughout the world. At Rhokana Corporation, in Northern Rhodesia, for instance, cobalt is found chiefly in the sulphide form, as carrollite, but a cobalt oxide mineral also occurs irregularly underground, and relatively small quantities in the mill feed from time to time are difficult to detect visually at the concentrator. The oxide cobalt is not amenable to the sulphide flotation process used at Rhokana and nearly all of it passes into the tailing. The occasional period when high tailing losses occur with no appreciable change in the cobalt content of the mill feed has naturally been disturbing to the concentrator staff, who had no means of determining whether an influx of cobalt oxide ore or laxity on the part of the mill flotation operators as responsible for these results. A procedure for determining oxidized copper minerals, based on their solubility in dilute sulphuric acid saturated with SO2, has been used for many years in the copper industry. In the presence of cuprite the procedure fails, but otherwise it gives results quite satisfactory for control pur- poses. Empirical methods for determining oxidized forms of zinc and lead have been proposed, but they are generally unsatisfactory except in isolated cases of a very simple ore. No published procedure for determining oxidized forms of cobalt or siinilar elements has come to the authors'notice. Experimental Procedure There are obviously two alternatives in attacking a problem of this nature. One is to employ a solvent for oxide cobalt that will not dissolve cobalt sulphide. The other is to find a substance capable of oxidizing the cobalt sulphide to sulphate, which of course is water-soluble and can then be leached from the water-insoluble oxide cobalt. A representative sample of Rhokana cobalt oxide ore was secured, ground to minus 200-mesh, and carefully rolled to furnish a standard sample for this work. The analysis of this material gave the following percentages: Co, 0.55; Cu, 1.64; Fe, 2.98; S, 0.08; SiO2, 41.42; Al2o3, 11.20; CaO, 13.82; MgO, 3.80. As a source of cobalt sulphide a similar large sample of carrollite was prepared, analyzing Co, 23.36 per cent; Cu, 27.32; and S, 31.13. This sample of course was not pure carrollite, but was the best obtainable in quantities sufficient for a standard intended for considerable work. It was a pure sulphide sample, microscopic examination showing only carrollite, a little bornite, and gangue, with no visible sign of oxidized ore present. Discussion of the paper of WALTHER MATHESIUS, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 99, March, 1915, pp. 539 to 555. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, So. Bethlehem, Pa.-This paper answers. partly the difficult questions which have come up as to why it is not economical to use higher blast temperatures in the smelting of Mesaba ores, such as the high temperatures used in European practices, and the answer is very plain that the ores will not stand the higher temperature. But the paper does not go into detail as to what special difficulties were found with the higher temperature of blast, and I would ask the author to kindly specify them. W. A. FORBES, New York, N. Y.-A large part of the troubles that furnace men experienced in using high-blast heats in smelting Mesaba ores in the early days of using Mesaba ores, was clue to the attempt to use these soft ores on furnaces having the same lines as the furnaces used in smelting the hard Old Range ores. As the result of observation and study, the dimensions of the lower part of the blast furnaces have been changed and the difficulties of the blast-furnace men in operating with a large percentage of Mesaba ore and high-blast temperatures have been largely overcome. The changes I refer to in particular are: (1) steepening the angle of the bosh; (2), decreasing the height of the bosh; (3) increasing the diameter of the hearth. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS.-Mr. Forbes's answer is quite satisfactory, and the moral which it points is that when the furnace is run with a higher temperature in the smelting zone, the furnace lines which were adapted for the lower temperatures are not necessarily those best suited for the higher hearth temperatures. If. enriched blast were used in a furnace, and higher temperatures run, it would be found necessary to further modify the lines of the furnace to meet the new conditions and to get the maximum output with economy. J. E. JOHNSON, JR., New York, N. Y.-It seems to me this is one of the few papers which could well have been a little longer. The data which Mr. Mathesius has given us, I think should be considered in connection with the paper which Mr. Brassert read before the American Iron and Steel Institute last spring, in which he described how they had obtained remarkable results with furnaces with steep but very short boshes; the angles have been raised to 80°, and the boshes made so short that they no longer appear as a conspicuous part of the shape of the furnace.

The study of microbial sulfide oxidation and oxidation rates of tailings requires the use of sterile control samples in laboratory experiments for comparison purposes. The need for sterile tailings sand is also apparent in the study of microbial communities and processes. This study compares six different methods with regard to sterilisation efficiency and investigates chemical and mineralogical changes in the samples as the result of sample treatment. In addition, the effect of sterilisation on mineral weathering rates is also studied. The efficiency of the different methods with regard to sterility is estimated by most probable numbers (MPN) of both sulfur and iron oxidising bacteria. The sterilisation methods that were compared are: washing with sterile water, washing with ethanol, applying antibiotics, repeated heating to 70¦C, autoclaving, and γ-irradiation. There are several possible drawbacks with the different methods, including the risk of an applied chemical acting as a substrate for micro-organisms in the system, and the risk of altering the tailings. The results show a substantial difference in sterilisation efficiency between the treatments. For example, autoclaving, repeated heating, ethanol and irradiation efficiently kill micro-organisms, rendering an undetectable amount of bacteria after one month of incubation, whilst washing with water exhibits virtually no microbiological effect, with a bacterial content comparable to the control. The use of antibiotics for sterilisation ranks intermediate: the lag-phase was twice as long in the antibiotics treatment compared with the controls. X-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, M÷ssbauer spectroscopy, and mineral magnetism indicate no significant change in the bulk mineralogical composition. However, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses show that with some of the treatments, sulfides are partially oxidised, as indicated by the formation of sulfate and partially û oxidised sulfur species at the tailings surfaces. Aerated batch weathering experiments performed on sterilised tailings samples and untreated controls indicated that while the initial rates of element (S, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mg, Na, K, Ca) release may differ between the samples, over the course of ~100 days of experiment at pH 2 and room temperature, the rates declined toward a similar value for all samples. To conclude, there does not appear to be one perfect method for tailings sterilisation. Autoclaving and heating damage the mineral grain structure and oxidise the sulfide surfaces. Ethanol, antibiotics and rinsing greatly alter the pore water chemistry through the washing procedure. In addition, ethanol and denatured antibiotics might serve as a substrate and also, in the case of antibiotics, adhere to mineral surfaces thus obstructing chemical reactions. Irradiation seems to be the preferable method on an overall basis, although the formation of surface Fe3+ was suggested by M÷ssbauer spectroscopy.

The mining industry is in the midst of dramatic change. Mining activities are moving from industrialized first world countries (Canada, Australia, and the United States) to the third world. This shift is occurring due to depleted reserves, tough environmental standards, and expensive labor in traditional mining countries. During a recent trip to South Africa, I was asked, owing to my educational background in economics and an international involvement in drilling and blasting, what changes could be anticipated in third world blasting practices as labor costs increase. It is from that beginning that this presentation has evolved.

Isothermal reduction kinetics of CF2 by 30% CO and 70% N2 at 1123, 1173 and 1223 K was investigated by TGA in this study. The reduction rate analysis indicated that reduction of CF2 comprises three stages during the whole reduction process, Apparent activation energy of samples CF2 reduction is 34.37 kJ/mol. The ln-ln analysis implied the reduction of CF2 was expressed initially by a 2D subsequently by 3D shrinking layer reaction.

"This project is the upgrading of a commuter line of approximately 76 km to improve the railway system in Istanbul metropolitan area. Railway tracks have been connected between Asia and Europe through a tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait. The length of these underground structures sums up 13.6 km. In this paper, the observational construction management based on field measurement performed at large scale underground railway station (Sirkeci station) constructed by means of New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is described and the mechanism for generation of ground surface settlement above this station is discussed.Buildings above Sirkeci station are overcrowded. About 60% of the buildings are made of reinforced-concrete (RC) and others are of brick. Based on the investigation into the predicted settlement and inclination, necessary actions such as structural reinforcement and soil improvement have been conducted for dilapidated buildings.Rock mass around Sirkeci station consists of alternative strata of sandstone and mudstone. It is overall soft rock with an elastic modulus of 150 MPa, partly including fractured zones. Overburden is about 30 to 40 m. The thickness of unconsolidated sand layer distributed on the bedrock is about 10 m. As a result of in-situ permeability tests, the coefficient of permeability of the sand layer is about 1.0x10-3 cm/s. Fill layer of about 10 to 25 m in thickness covers the sand layer at the ground surface. The fill layer contains a lot of artificial waste like splinters of wood, brick chips and mortar chips, etc. in addition to gravel, sand, silt and shells. The coefficient of permeability of fill layer is estimated to be 1.0 x10-2 cm/s, which is one-order greater than that of the sand layer. Fill layer consists of ancient city ruins of ages respectively from the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire and has a lot of gaps.The underground part of the Sirkeci station was excavated through a ventilation shaft. Ground surface settlement occurred more than predicted. Therefore, back analyses were performed in order to precisely predict the next-step settlement. However, back analyses with elasto-plastic models could not simulate the actual phenomena and hence, an anisotropic-damage-parameter model developed by Sakurai (1999) was adopted for the back analysis. Furthermore, as the excavation of tunnel proceeded, the ground surface settlement exceeded the predicted value again. Based on the monitoring results, it seemed that pore water pressure decreased by the tunnel excavation resulted in the soft rock and soil to be contracted due to the increase in the effective confining pressure. A coupled hydraulic-mechanical analysis was applied to explain the relationship between decreased pore water pressure and ground surface settlement. The settlement due to drainage from tunnel wall was well-estimated in the coupled hydraulic-mechanical analysis.However, further settlement occurred more than predicted again and again. Though it was very difficult to clarify the reason of the large settlement, it was recognized that the unexpected ground surface settlement resulted from the existence of the large gaps in the fill layer that was greatly compressed. The final settlement reached up to 327 mm."

More¬over, industries, such as space, medicine, and defense, which require stringent: design and perfomance specifications in highly competitive world markets, increasingly demand these new materials. The definition of advanced materials used here is one that has been adopted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines: Those materials which have been developed over the past 30 years or so, and which are being developed at present, that exhibit greater strength, higher strength-density ratios, greater hardness, and/or one or more superior thermal, electrical, optical, or chemical properties, when compared with traditional materials.

In order to meet the stringent market requirements for high purity cobalt, ZCCM commissioned the VIR plant in December 1982. The plant comprises a 4.1 tonne/heat vacuum induction furnace with a rated annual capacity of 2,500 MT of barstock. In the VIR furnace, molten cobalt is held under vacuum at 1600°C resulting in the removal of more volatile impurity elements by distillation. Operations todate have demonstrated that Pb, Zn and Cd have good distillation rates in excess of 95%, leading to cobalt containing 1 ppm or less of the above elements. Removal of other impurities such as Se, Bi is about 65% with the finished product still assaying around 1 ppm of each of these elements. Vacuum refining of cobalt offers an economic route for producing higher grades of cobalt from the type of concentrates and treatment processes available within ZCCM. The consistency of VIR cobalt quality has been confirmed by ZCCM and some of its alloy customers.

Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

"The computational modelling of extrusion and forging processes is now well established. In this work a novel approach is described which utilises finite volume methods on unstructured meshes. This technique can be used to solve simultaneously for fluid flow, heat transfer and non-linear solid mechanics and their interactions. The approach involves the solution of free surface non-Newtonian fluid flow equations in an Eulerian context to track the behaviour of the workpiece and its extrusion/forging, and the solution of the solid mechanics equations in the Lagrangian context to predict the deformation/stress behaviour of the die. Some preliminary examples of this approach will be discussed.IntroductionThe computational modelling of extrusion and forging processes is now well established. Within the last 20 years the finite element method has become the most commonly used technique to simulate metal forming processes [1]-[4]. The Lagrangian and Eulerian type of formulation have been the two major approaches to this problem.Lagrangian methods are efficient and suitable for handling non-linear problems in which small strains prevail, boundary conditions do not change with the course of deformation, and where mesh distortion is not a critical factor in the analysis. Unfortunately, the above points are essential to any accurate metal forming analysis. The problems of mesh distortion and element entanglement pose a serious drawback on the use of such methods. Some automatic remeshing techniques have been developed for Lagrangian finite element analyses of metal forming problems [5]-[7]. However, these methods are not robust and efficient enough to remedy the mesh distortion problems in general. An alternative is to update the mesh manually but this is not always possible, and even when it is feasible it involves major interaction by the user. In addition, remeshing is usually applied to the whole domain which is not necessary and increases CPU time. The complexities associated with remeshing also affect the ability to parallelise the code."

A soldagem com elevado aporte térmico é uma das alternativas adotadas pelos estaleiros para aumento da produtividade nas operações de união de materiais. No entanto, os ciclos térmicos gerados durante a soldagem podem provocar transformações microestruturais prejudiciais à tenacidade na zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Este estudo teve como principal propósito realizar a caracterização microestrutural e avaliar as propriedades mecânicas da ZAC do aço naval Sincron EH36 produzido na Usiminas por laminação controlada seguida de resfriamento acelerado em comparação com um aço de mesma classe de limite de escoamento produzido convencionalmente, ambos soldados pelo processo ao arco submerso em dois níveis de aporte térmico: 76 e 130 kJ/cm. Foi observado que a presença de uma microestrutura mais refinada nas diferentes regiões da ZAC, associadas ao menor tamanho de grão do metal base e ao menor carbono equivalente, foram os principais fatores que contribuíram para a excelente tenacidade da ZAC do aço Sincron em comparação ao aço convencional. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que é possível obter juntas soldadas com excelentes propriedades mecânicas ao se empregar aço Sincron para a soldagem com altos aportes de calor, e sua utilização pode ser uma estratégia para otimização dos tempos e custos de fabricação na indústria naval.

The use of the quasi static (Dutch) Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is described as a tool to predetermine the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile point. An analysis is given why a purely theoritical approach does not meet with success. A practical method is explained of extrapolating the cone resistance to predict the pile point resistance. The method has been calibrated against the result of 32 selected high standard loading tests on pile points in the Netherlands.

The Bureau of Mines developed a rapid test method for predicting the stability of motor gasoline during long-term storage. The amounts of gum and inorganic residue formed in 13 gasolines during a l6-hour oven test at 200° F were compared with the amounts formed in the same gasolines stored at 110° F, and analyzed following 8-, 16-, 32-, 44-, and 52-week storage periods. Satisfactory methods were developed for predicting gum and inorganic residue formation during fuel storage periods as long as 32 weeks at 110° F, the approximate equivalent of 5.7 years at 80° F. The only data required to apply the methods are the amount of gum and inorganic residue formed, and the amount of oxygen that reacted, during a l6-hour oven test. A direct relationship existed between inorganic residue formed during the oven test and during 110° F storage. Statistical treatment of the data showed predicted values were as reliable as determined values. By use of a modified Arrhenius equation, the 110° F storage time can be extrapolated to equivalent time at any temperature below 110° F. Thus by combining the stability prediction method with the mathematical extrapolation, the storage performance of motor gasoline for extended periods can be estimated at any temperature up to 110° F.

Today, arsenic has become a much greater problem than before because of the limitations introduced by WHO and USEPA that are lowered from 0.05 ppm to 0.01 ppm. In the nature Arsenic is mostly found as inorganic compounds in the forms of arsenite (As+3) and arsenate (As+5) in aqueous solutions. Arsenic contamination in ground and surface waters has been encountered in almost every country. This element has a carcinogenic effect and can occur in natural sources and anthropogenic sources such as metal mining, groundwater usage and industrial activities. In this study adsorbing colloid flotation was applied in the presence of aluminum sulfates. In the experiments SDS and K-Oleate were used as collectors while MIBC was the frother employed. The effects of collectors and aluminum/arsenic ratios on the removal of arsenic were examined under various pH values. It was found that arsenic removal enhanced with increasing aluminum concentration. Furthermore, it was observed that pH was a very critical parameter in all experiments. The best results were obtained when initial As: SDS: Al concentrations were 10:40:40 ppm at pH 5.5. At this concentration, the efficiency of arsenic removal found to be 99.9%. I AM-glad to have the opportunity at this time to say that I consider it a very great honor to be elected President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. It fulfills the proudest hopes of my ambition. There is, ,however, one drawback to my personal gratification-a feeling of unworthiness to have my name placed on the list with former Presidents of the Institute, with the brilliant Raymond who guided our society for so many years, with the versatile and lovable James Douglas, my first employer and my friend, a most generous benefactor of our Institute, with the skilful Holley, who gave to the manufacture of steel in this country, its first great impulse, to mention only three of the accomplished men who have preceded me. I assume that the honor of my being elected President of the Institute is not merely a personal one but that it should be considered a tribute to the wonderful progress in the art of mining, both underground and in open pits, and in the beneficiation of native copper and iron ores, which have been shown in the Lake Superior District and also a recognition of our members there and elsewhere who are living at the mines and directing the operations, upon the success of which the whole mineral industry depends.

The recent seismic events have shown that earthquakes have an immense destructive power. Chile was hit in February 2010 with a seismic intensity of 8.8 on the Richter scale, and had loss of about 700 killed persons, while Haiti was hit in January 2010 with 7.0 killing about 220?000 people. The event in Haiti showed that the seismic events can lead to a disaster if no preventive measures are taken. On the other side, the seismic event in Chile has hit a well-prepared country with moderate consequences. The earthquake with 6.6 Richter in Japan in March 2011, have further shown how severe the consequences can be if critical equipment is involved. Fortunately, the equipment in a mine has not the potential hazard as a nuclear power plant. Anyway, we are diligent and it is obvious that the seismic risk may lead to a real disaster even if the probability is small. The GMD is an important component in the grinding circuit of a mine. This paper maps out earthquake-prone areas including expected earthquake magnitude calculated according to relevant standards, focusing mainly on the building code IBC 2009. An overview is provided on how this standard is applied to mining equipment to minimize damage and aid large mills in operation to successfully withstand seismic effects. The differences in stresses and forces on the GMD and foundation are shown based on a turning and stopped mill simulation during an earthquake. The results demonstrate the need to maintain active and operating earthquake detection systems. Aside from detecting an earthquake?s magnitude, the sensor information can also be used to reduce the harmful effects that an earthquake has on mining equipment. As follows the earthquake requirements are defined. The last part of this paper explains how to fullfill these requirements.

Winter-time natural convection in gravel embankments has been suggested as a technique to provide passive cooling and thereby avoid thaw-settlement of roadways located in permafrost areas. Numerical simulation by finite volume method on the proposed model is perf9rmed using the software FLUENT. A gravels model, in which the embankment is composed of stones and air, has been adopted to investigate the temperature and velocity fields in embankment. Simulation results show that in summer, a weak clockwise circulation of the pore air extending throughout most of the embankment. The pore-air motion is very weak which results in relatively straight horizontal isotherm lines. And heat transfer is mainly maintained through conduction. But in winter, pore-air velocities are higher and multiple vortexes are formed in the embankment. Natural convection then becomes the dominant influence on the isotherm shapes within the embankment. As a result of low ambient temperatures exerted on the embankment surface during winter months, an unstable air density gradient develops within the embankment. This convection increases the heat flux out of the embankment. Therefore, the winter-time convection can further reduce the temperature of the foundation soil beneath the open-graded embankment. In addition, the effects of the size of the stones within the embankment have been analyzed and compared in the gravel model. It shows that in winter, 200mm stones lead to stronger vortexes in the embankment compared with those of 60mm stones. Consequently, the zone oflow-temperature beneath the embankment is extended.

As part of the development of processes for producing synthetic fuels from coal, the Bureau of Mines prepared a special jet fuel in a pilot plant for evaluation by the Air Force. This jet fuel had all the required physical properties, including the important specifications of high heating value and high density. However, the finished fuel did not pass the stability test specified by the Air Force and conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in a high-temperature research coker. The cause for this instability is being investigated because pure compounds of the type identified in this fuel are known to be stable. The tar acid oil used was a 230° to 300° C. fraction of low-temperature tar obtained by carbonization of a West Virginia bituminous coal in the pilot plant of the Consolidation Coal Co. Both the desulfurization at 400° C. and saturation at 300" C. were done in the vapor phase at 2,500 p.s.i.g. After catalytic treatment and distillation the final jet fuel had a boiling range of 194° to 247° C., a net heating value of 18,420 B.t.u./lb. and a specific gravity of 0.8463 60° F./60° F. It also had u pour point below -62° C., and at 0° C. its viscosity was 4.5 cs. The oil was virtually all bicyclic, 41 pct. noncondensed and 56 pct. condensed.
