This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. The time-dependent volumetric constitutive relation for a San Andreas fault gouge and a consolidated kaolinite are experimentally determined at confining pressures to 200 Mpa, under creep condition and at ultrasonic frequency. At any given pressure, the bulk modulus determined at 1 Mhz frequency is identical to the "elastic" modulus determined at a stepwise change of pressure. After the pressure change, there occur a time-dependent change of volume and thus the effective bulk modulus. The constitutive relations may be modeled by a standard linear viscoelastic medium with pressure-dependent moduli and viscosity. For the San Andreas fault gouge, viscosity increases from 2x10 13 poise, at 17 Mpa, and 10 14 poise, at 100 Mpa. For kaolinite sample, the corresponding values are 3x10 12 poise and 10 13 poise. These results imply that both stress and pore pressure in fault zones may show time-dependent variations in response to a change of state of stress, such as that occurring after an earthquake.

Tailings and/or wastewater generated from gold extraction plants employing cyanida­ tion must often be treated to remove the cyanides and heavy metals for environmental reasons and/or gold extraction inhibition reasons, due to the presence of heavy metals like copper, which have a detrimen­ tal effect during cyanidation. In recent years, the treatment of effluents contain­ ing cyanides and heavy metals has been widely studied, Among chemical treatment methods, the use of hydrogen peroxide has been universally employed as a viable option. However, in some cases, effluents containing high concentrations of heavy metals and/or solids decompose the hydrogen peroxide, an undesirable side reaction. The addition of stabilizers or other peroxygen compounds together with hydrogen peroxide can, however, considerably reduce the rate of decomposition and thus result in detoxi­ fication costs, which are considerably less than the standard detoxification process using hydrogen peroxide. In some cases, the reaction rate can also be increased, resul­ ting in lower investment costs for new detoxification plants. This paper deals with the results of developmental work performed in the recent past and introduces some new processes with the aim of optimizing reagent consumption and costs.

I have used for about two years, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Company, a rapid method for the determination of phosphorus in iron, steel, and ores, which possesses one or two features sufficiently novel to warrant description. In general, it is the method described by Mr. Benjamin B. Wright (Transactions, vol. x., p. 197), involving the precipitation of the phosphorus by means of molybdate solution, and its estimation in the yellow precipitate by reduction of the molybdic acid, and titration of the resulting oxide with a standardized permanganate solution, according to the principles laid down by Werncke (Fres, Zeit., vol. xiv., p. 1). In the use of this method, I had difficulty at first in obtaining a yellow precipitate of reasonably uniform composition. It is a well-known fact that, to secure this result, the conditions of precipitation must not vary. The principal condition is temperature; and acidity, concentration, proportion of nitrates and chlorides, and time, are important elements. "Micro-piles are small diameter (5 to 10 inches), cast-in-place piles which can develop high load capacities by bonding with soil or rock. Micro-piles are particularly well-suited for moderate to heavily loaded structures requiring deep foundations in difficult subsurface conditions, such as karst, bouldery mine spoil, or unsuitable fills with concrete debris or other obstructions. Attempts to install conventional deep foundations including driven piles, drilled piers, or auger-cast piles are likely to be fraught with construction difficulties and disputes, delays, cost overruns, and may be unfeasible in some cases. Micro-pile installation equipment is very effective in installing foundations through such overburden or rock materials.This paper presents case histories of Micro-pile installations on two projects with difficult soil/rock materials. The project sites are located in Charles Town, West Virginia and Masontown, Pennsylvania.Charles Town, West Virginia ProjectThe Charles Town project entailed construction of a four-story pre-cast concrete garage. Triad Engineering, Inc. performed a geotechnical investigation for this project (Triad, 2001). The carbonate rocks at the site were characterized as ""moderately solution-prone, highly calcareous and weathers differentially to produce a pinnacled or ""sawtooth"" top of rock profile. Different materials are used for manufacturing various parts of a cellular phone. Considering that a great number of mobile phones are being discarded every year, it is important to recover these materials and then recycle them in order to save resources. The primary objective of this work is therefore to find and suggest ways on how to recover various materials from discarded cellular phones for recycling. Much effort, for example, has been put in recovering and recycling tin oxide (ITO), a mixture of indium (III) oxide, (UI2O3) and tin(IV) oxide from the discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Here we report a simple and cost-effective process, which includes a HC1 treatment process for altering the structure of the indium (III) compound into a chlorideinduced indium compound, in order to facilitate the vaporization of indium at a relatively low temperature. The experimental results indicated that 96.2 % of indium can be recovered from ITO, when the sample was heated at 973 K for 90 minutes. In addition, some thermodynamic calculations were also carried out in order to better understand the mechanism for chlorideinduced vaporization of indium.

The outstanding event in the California petroleum industry during 1931 was the continuance of curtailment of crude oil production, which directly reduced drilling and well repair activities. Although all objectives were not attained, a very close balance between supply and demand was maintained during the period of maximum requirements, but the decline in intercoastal and export shipments caused an overproduction during the last half of the year, which indicated that California production would necessarily suffer further curtailment after the end of the year. A new peak in potential crude oil production of 1,187,600 bbl. per day was reported in August and at the close of the year the California potential was 1,069,000 bbl. per day, the shut-in light oil amounting to practically 425,000 bbl. per day and the shut-in heavy oil amounting to about 150,000 bbl. per day. Fig. 1 depicts these conditions and also shows the production and curtailment situation since the inception of proration in California. The December, 1931, potential figure of 1,069,-000 bbl. per day was arrived at after the most careful deliberation by a number of committees, selected to check the potential of practically every well in the state. Continued overproduction in the first three months of 1931 and the inadvisability of building more storage, together with the inability to obtain the proper amount of curtailment in town-lot fields, such as Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs and Playa del Rey, prompted the major oil companies to inaugurate a price reduction in crude oil. This cut caused prices to reach the lowest levels since 1915, and instigated the formation of an oil sales agency, composed of independent operators, which is known as the Oil Producers Sales Agency. The purpose of this organization is to procure a market for its members at reasonable prices, advise them of market conditions and aid them in controlling the amount of oil available for sale. Marketing of oil produced by members began on June 1 and independents controlling" about 160,000 bbl. per day of production had become members by the end of the month.

Neste estudo, caracterizações morfológicas e mecânicas foram utilizadas em fibras de coco brasileiras na condição como recebida e tratadas superficialmente (por NaOH, aquecidas e por NaOH seguido de aquecimento) e em mantas de fibras de coco fabricadas por compressão. Para a análise morfológica foi utilizada a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e para a análise mecânica foi utilizado o ensaio de tração uniaxial. As análises por MEV apresentaram que as fibras tratadas por NaOH possuem paredes celulares externas mais nítidas e partículas circulares com diâmetros de aproximadamente 10 µm. O tratamento químico alterou a parede externa das fibras de coco; em uma das amostras foram vistas microtrincas da ordem de 7 a 60 µm em virtude do tratamento seguido de aquecimento. O módulo inicial (módulo de elasticidade) e a tensão de ruptura diminuíram com o aumento de diâmetro nas quatro condições de fibras de coco estudadas. A geometria e a massa da manta de fibra de coco influenciaram no seu comportamento mecânico.

A longterm overburden removal plan can be realistic and optimum only when the cost and capacity profiles off the equipment assigned to the operation are taken into consideration. Therefore, the planning should involve the proper assignment of equipment capacity by insuring a timely investment and a timely replacement policy throughout the mine life. A dynamic solution algorithm has been developed, by which all possible truck fleet alternatives are evaluated for each year off the operation. Cumulative cost off the operation is carried throughout the analysis. The optimum solution is obtained by selecting the minimum cumulative cost at the last year and tracing backward the best fleet alternative for each year. The solution provides: 1. the optimum amount of overburden to be removed each year; 2. the best fleet to be assigned to the job; and 3. the best equipment replacement policy.

Solidification experiments were conducted with the objective of testing the theory of eutectic colony formation. Appropriate control of variables in tests on a series of high-purity aluminum-copper specimens of eutectic composition resulted in the observation of three types of eutectic microstructures, these being a unique structure consisting of lamellae essentially parallel to one another, a banded structure, and the colony structure. Lamellar faults, which are morphologically similar in many respects to edge dislocation models in crystals, produced a complex substructure in these specimens. SOLUTE rejection at the advancing solid-liquid interface of a unidirectionally solidified single-phase metal can cause the liquid immediately in front of the interface to become constitutionally super-cooled below the equilibrium liquidus temperature. Constitutional super-cooling occurs if the solidification rate, R, is too rapid, or if the thermal gradient in the liquid at the interface, G, is too low. 1 This constitutionally supercooled layer in turn stabilizes a cellular rather than a planar interface.&apos; A similar cellular interface has been observed when lamellar and other types of eutectics were unidirectionally solidified, and it has been shown that the cellular interface led to the formation of eutectic colonies.&apos; The lamellar structure is fan-shaped at the edges of colonies (which correspond to valleys or grooves in the cellular interface) because the lamellae grow normal to the local interface. One of the possible mechanisms which might cause the formation of the cellular interface, in the case of solidifying eutectic alloys, is constitutional supercooling of the liquid with respect to a third component rejected by both phases of the eutectic.3,4 On the basis of the analogy between the solidification of single-phase metals and binary eutectics, a eutectic alloy should solidify with a planar interface if the ratio of G/R is sufficiently high to compensate for any impurity which might be present and causing constitutional supercooling. The fan-like microstruc-ture of eutectic colonies should not occur under these conditions and the lamellae should be parallel to one another and to the solidification direction for extended distances. The experiments conducted in this investigation were designed to test these ideas. Following a resume of the experimental procedure, the various microstructures observed during the study are described, and their relationship to the growth conditions which produced them is discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The eutectic between an aluminum solid solution and 0 phase (approximate composition CuA12) was chosen for this work for the following reasons: it was known that a lamellar structure forms, the eutectic temperature is low enough to facilitate experimental work, and the components can be procured commercially in a very pure form. High-purity copper (est. 99.999 pct Cu, obtained from National Research Corp.) and spectrographic aluminum rods, having impurities other than copper estimated to be Zn-15 ppm, Mg-10 ppm, Fe-3 ppm, Na-2 ppm, Cd-1 ppm, and Mn < 1 ppm, were melted in a stabilized zirconia crucible in a vacuum induction furnace at a pressure of 10 pof Hg. The melt was superheated to about 1000°C to assure mixing, cooled to 780°C and cast into an investment mold which yielded sixteen cylindrical specimen blanks 1/2 in. in diam and 5 1/2 in. long. The casting was allowed to solidify under vacuum. This master heat had an analysis of 32.6 wt pct Cu and 67.4 wt pct A1 by difference. It is no longer satisfactory to assess the value of a coking coal on its intrinsic properties alone; its value depends upon its behaviour as a component in a blend. No single test can be used to make this assessment, it can only be made by carrying out a suite of tests. The quality parameters which are considered desirable, and which have widespread acceptance, have been discussed and their application to the blending of coals from New South Wales and New Zealand has been reported and discussed. Blending can be utilised to offset deficiencies, or capitalise on advantages, of the individual coals making up a blend. Coals can be blended, which alone are poorly, Coking, but which have compensating features. Blending also allows better exploitation of coking coal reserves. Several applications of blending have been reviewed with regard to coal producers and exporters, as well as coal users. The possibility of extracting a coking coal fraction from fuel coals is discussed. Blending systems and the coking of coal are also briefly reviewed.

IN an ideal mill, with perfect milling operations, the mineral extraction would be 100 per cent, the, concentrate would be 100 per cent mineral, the tailing would assay zer.0 mineral and the milling cost would be zero dollars. Such an operation can, of course, never be attained. We can only strive to approach it as nearly as possible and in doing so most recognize .the fact that the three primary factors in milling: assay of concentrate, assay of tailing, and cost of operation bear a definite economic relationship to each other. This relation will change from time to time and will be different for different mills, depending on milling equipment, character and quality of feed, market conditions, and other factors. It is granted that for a given operation there is an economic point, but the location of this point is difficult. It is for the purpose of making some of these economic points a little more tangible that this paper has been prepared.

The principal dirnensions of the chimney were fixed as follows: Height from formation to coping, 328 ft. 8 in.; inside diameter concrete shell, 13 ft. Gin.; inside diameter of the 4~-in. brick lining. 11 ft. (j in. ; shell thickness above flue inlet at a point 39 ft. above formation, 1 ft. 8in.; shell thickness at coping, 6 in. That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.

ANDES, lying south of Chuquicamata and north of Braden on the western slope of Chile&apos;s cordillera, can best be described as a big well-managed copper-mining enterprise without any peculiarly outstanding features. In point of copper produced, since output started in 1927, it ranks fifth among the Porphyries, being exceeded only by its two Chilean contemporaries and by Utah Copper and Morenci in the United States. Even so, there is little to distinguish it from other properties. It does not have the phenomenally rich ore (better than 2 per cent copper) that characterizes Braden; and it is not in the same class as Chuquicamata whose ore has the excellent tenor of around 1.7 per cent, nor has it Chuqui&apos;s immense tonnage of proven ore reserves and potential ore resources. One might say the operations are standard in that there are no basic or radical departures from established practice. A letter from New York supplying me with sundry pertinent facts for which I had asked, makes this comment regarding the answer to one inquiry: "omitted because it is the ordinary equipment found in any well-run mine." The substance of that remark applies generally to the other operations, plants, and facilities. One interesting fact that helps explain this situation should not be overlooked. Until the "new" Morenci in 1942, Andes was the last of the Porphyry copper mines to come into production. It did not do much pioneering because other companies had, of necessity, charted the way in many particulars. Alumina precursor powders can be precipitated from aqueous solutions, using hydrothermal decomposition of urea to deliver base homogeneously to the system. Primary particles agglomerate early in the process, generating a wide size distribution. The presence of a polymeric surfactant such as polyacrylate can suppress or delay agglomeration, reducing particle size and narrowing the size distribution. The stabilization of commercially available a-Alp03 powder with polyacrylate was studied, investigating the effects of polyacrylate molecular weight, ionic strength and temperature. The effect of aluminum concentration, polyacrylate molecular weight and urea concentration on the precipitation of alumina precursors in a sulfate- urea system in the presence of polyacrylate/polyacrylic acid was then studied. The hydrolysis kinetics were followed, and particle sizes were determined. Precipitates were further characterized using energy dispersive spectroscopy. The particle characteristics are discussed in terms of the process conditions.

Boiler-Room Economy "Establishing and Maintaining Boiler-room Economy" is the title of a paper presented before the Ohio Society of Mechanical Electrical and Steam Engineers by Geo. H. Gibson, of which the following is an excerpt: Boiler-room economy depends less upon equipment than upon operation, i.e., it depends largely upon the condition in which the apparatus is maintained and how it is used. A given boiler may operate this week with an efficiency of 78 per cent., and next week with an efficiency of 65 per cent., while using the same fuel and developing the same rating. If there are variations ii; character of fuel and in load and other factors, the falling-off may be even greater, possibly to less than 60 per cent. The steam produced may cost twice as much per 1,000 lb. at one time as at another. Most steam plant managers know from their own experience that these statements are not exaggerated. It does not take much of a plant to run up a coal bill of $5,000 per year, many "spend $10,000 for coal, and fuel bills of $50,000, $100,000, or $200,000 per annum are not uncommon. As it call be shown in the majority of these plants that 10 per cent. of this amount may be saved, and in large numbers of them 25 per cent., while in some the expenditure can be cut in half, there is no disputing that we have here a subject worthy of attention. In the production of steam the greatest variable is the human factor. Before we can pass judgment, however, we must first have standards. This implies accurate quantitative knowledge of fuel consumption and steam production. We must measure the output and know how much the steam costs per thousand pounds, and how many pounds of steam are obtained from a pound of coal. We can then begin to analyze the problem, and find where and how methods and conditions can be improved, and how much. Many favor buying coal on a B. t. u. basis. This is advisable where the amount purchased warrants the considerable expense involved in systematically gathering samples that: are. truly representative and in having analyses made, of every carload. Coal analyses, combined with. an honest endeavor on the part of the miner to ship good coal, should insure the receipt of the heat units paid for. , It often happens, however, that the coal which is cheapest on a B.t.u. basis is not the cheapest or most suitable for producing steam, because of peculiarities of the plant in which it is to be burned, or conversely, the fuel which furnishes cheap B.t.u. may require special methods or equipment for its economic utilization.

The foundation solution for a data centre building in Sydney, Australia comprised two alternatives, the first of which incorporated the use of CFA piles founded in rock at approx. 27m depth to support column working loadings of approx. 7.5MN, and the second utilising rapid impact compaction with a raft foundation of 1.0m thick concrete slab. Soil conditions comprised 1m of fill over 3 to 4m of sands varying from loose to dense consistency, underlain by very stiff clays overlying the rock. A creative solution incorporating Rapid Impact Compaction to improve the loose soils in conjunction with a piled raft solution was proposed. Piles proposed under the raft were Atlas Drilled Displacement piles which offered advantages of displacement pile performance and savings in time and material costs. The piled raft solution was developed in consultation with the consulting structural engineer, combining the skills of the piling contractor and consulting engineer to the benefit of the project. This paper describes the development and design aspects of the piled raft solution adopted for the project.

A phenomenological model is presented for leaching silver from silver sulfide contained in mineral particles with ammoniacal thiosulfate solutions of copper in stirred reactors. Experimental results were used to adjust the kinetic parameters of the model, such as the reaction order and velocity. The incorporation of the cuprous sulfide-silver sulfide equilibrium at the reaction interface allowed the prediction of the conversion limits for different reagent concentrations. The information obtained from the reactor model was later integrated into a heap leaching simulation, whose results adequately describe tendencies observed in column tests, with respect to variations in copper and thiosulfate concentrations. The objective of this contract is to design, build, surface test, and evaluate a breadboard prototype of the Variable Wall Mining System so that data are available for the design of a production machine. The Variable Wall Mining System (VWMS) consists of a series of side cutting augers, connected end to end, and distributed across a panel. Supplying rotary power at the end of the string and anchorage from conventional longwall roof supports, the augers are sequentially thrust into the face and then lifted to the roof to extract the coal in a continuous manner. The augers not only cut but also transport the coal. The effort described in this report summarizes the operation characteristics of the VWMS, the design methodology used to develop various working models, the surface testing of a ½ -scale version of the VWMS, prediction of power requirements and performance potential of a full-scale system, and a critique of the VWMS concept, conclusions, and recommendations.
