Pressure oxidation tests have been conducted by Sherritt for a refractory gold-silver project located in China. The feed contained 39 g/t Au and 970 g/t Ag; the major gold-bearing minerals were pyrite and arsenopyrite. Since the feed contained a significant amount of silver, which can be refractory to cyanide leaching after pressure oxidation due to the formation of argentojarosite, the test program included investigation of methods to enhance silver recovery. The "lime boil" process proved successful and was incorporated into the flowsheet. Gold extraction from the lime boil product solids was 95 to 98%; silver extraction was up to 94%.

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well. One of the major rubber companies has been promoting a two-way belt system, in which the conveyor belt is given two successive 90" twists at each end to enable it to carry material in both directions simultaneously. For many years the flat belt transmission industry has installed quarter-turn and half-turn twists in countless numbers of instances. While quarter-turn and half-turn twists in transmission belts is a familiar application, the 180" twist apparently has never been previously attempted with a conveyor belt. About a year ago, two officials of the National Iron Co. of Duluth, Lester and Lewis Erickson, proposed twisting the return run of a conveyor belt on an installation that they were designing for one of the major iron ore producers. Since then the soundness of the idea has been demonstrated, both in theory and by practical test, with the result that the installation of two conveyor belts involving the twisting of the return run is now under way. These two installations are designed to have the return run of the conveyor belt twisted 180" as it leaves the snub pulley at the head drive. The clean underside of the belt is thus placed against the idlers on the return run as well as on the carrying run. Just before it enters the tail pulley, the belt will be twisted an additional 180°, restoring it to its normal position. Because this twisting of the return run of a conveyor belt is a radical departure from accepted practice, an elaborate and extensive test was conducted early in 1950 to demonstrate that this twisting of the return run could be done successfully, also to establish application data for accomplishing this twisting, and to determine if any special equipment would be required. In studying this concept of twisting the return run of a conveyor belt, a number of problems need to be solved, primarily the ones brought about by deliberately introducing an unequal distribution of stress across the conveyor belt and controlling that maldistribution of stress, while confining it to the return run portion. The tension conditions existing in the return run of a conveyor belt are clear to all designers. First, the return run carries the initial or slack side tension of the conveyor belt, the tension that must be supplied to the return run to provide proper frictional contact between the belt and the driving pulley so that the necessary power can be transmitted from the driving pulley to the belt without slippage. This slack side tension is supplied to the belt by means of takeups, either of the gravity type, which can be vertical or horizontal, or by means of the screw type. With inclined or declined belt conveyors the slope tension also must be considered, which is the tension imposed by the weight of the belt hanging from the top pulley. This slope tension frequently can furnish part or even all of the initial tension required. The maximum value of the slope tension will be at the top pulley, and it decreases in direct proportion to the length. In addition to the foregoing, it frequently is desirable to impose arbitrarily additional slack side tension to provide sufficient tension at the loading point at the tail, so that the belt will adequately support its load between the carrying idlers. Design Conditions for Twisting A number of design conditions exist, which must be satisfied successfully to accomplish the twisting of the return run without exceeding normal working limits in any portion of the conveyor belt. It is obvious that the belt edge, in its relation to the center of the belt, must stretch in making a twist, because as the twist is accomplished, the belt edge travels through a longer path than does the center of the belt. It is further obvious that if the edge of the belt is stretched, a redistribution of stress in the belt is required to allow this edge stretching. Moreover, this stress will be unequal across the width of the belt, having a maximum value at the edges, with a minimum value at the- center of the belt. With correct initial tension in the return run of a conveyor belt, the existing slack side tension will be unequally distributed when a twist is introduced. The structure and morphology of thermoelastic and burst type martensitic phases that form upon cooling in Cu-Zn-Si p phase alloys have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The martensitic phases are composed of a lamellar mixture of two close-packed structures with different stacking sequence, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Striations within thermoelastic martensite are most likely produced during interaction with impinging burst-type martensite and not as a consequence of secondary shears. In a study of the martensitic transformation in ternary Cu-Zn based 0 phase alloys1 the dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, M,, with composition shows variations for elements within a constant valence subgroup and between different subgroups. Such variations are not reflected in a change in habit plane, which is approximately the same for each ternary alloy, namely in the vicinity of (2, 11, 12 Ip. The fact that the habit plane remained constant, despite large differences in M, temperature and electron concentration, suggested2 that the crystal structures of the martensitic phases could be nearly the same. Crystal structures of ternary Cu-Zn based martensites have been determined recently for alloys containing the three-valent elements gallium3, 4 and aluminm. The present studies have been made to examine the structures and morphology of the martensitic phase in ternary Cu-Zn based alloys containing a four-valent element, silicon. I) PROCEDURE Two alloys were prepared by melting and casting weighed quantities of the component high-purity metals in sealed quartz tubes under half an atmosphere of argon. They were subsequently remelted by levitation under a protective atmosphere of argon. After allowing for losses of zinc as determined by the difference in weight before and after casting, the compositions in atomic percent of both alloys were established to be Cu-33.5 Zn-1.8 Si and Cu-27 Zn-5.0 Si. These alloys were homogenized in the P-phase field for 2 days at 800" C. Bulk samples consisted of a martensite phase at room temperature, the M, temperature being approximately 30' and 200" for the 1.8 and the 5 pct Si alloys, respectively. Thin disks were cut from the ingots using a spark machine, and they were heated for 5 min at 800' and quenched into water in order to obtain martensite. These slices were thinned chemically at room temperature in a solution consisting of 40 parts HN03, 50 part H3PO4, and 10 parts HC1 and thinned further electrolytically by the Window technique, using a voltage of 15 to 25 v and a mixture of 1 part HN03 and 2 parts methanol, which was kept at a temperature near -30° c. Foils were examined by transmission electron microscopy using a Philips EM 200 electron microscope. 11) RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Structure and Morphology. Fig. 1 shows the martensitic phase in the alloy containing 1.8 at. pct Si. This phase is composed of contiguous platelets, each containing striations. The direction of the striations changes at the boundary between individual platelets. These internal markings resemble the striations that are usually identified as stacking faults, as for example in Cu-A1 martensites6-a or the lamellar mixture of two close-packed phases in Cu-Zn-Ga marten-sites.3p '9 lo In the present alloys, selected-area diffraction experiments have been obtained in order to determine the nature of the striations. Figs. 2(a), (61, and (c) are electron diffraction patterns of an area inside a single martensite plate. Fig. 2(a) contains diffraction spots which correspond to two close-packed structures with different stacking sequences, namely ABCBCACAB (orthorhombic) and ABC (fcc). Spots belonging only to the fcc structure are indicated by arrows. By tilting the foil either the orthorhombic structure, Fig. 2(b), or the cubic structure shown in Fig. 2(c) may be obtained. When the foil is oriented so that only the diffraction spots of the orthorhornbic structure are present, bright-field illumination shows small lamellae, as seen in Fig. 3. In this figure the lamellae that belong to the fcc structure are bright bands inside the dark extinction contours of the orthorhombic structure. The boundaries of the lamellae are parallel to the basal planes of the orthorhombic structure and to the {Ill} planes of the cubic structure, the close-packed directions of both structures being parallel. The 5 pct Si alloy shows similar features as those described for the 1.8 at. pct Si alloy.

India is targeting to boost its electrical capacity from 100 GW to 200 GW within the next 10 years. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided in2001 to take execution of the 800 MW Stage-II of the prestigious 2,051 MW Parbatihydrol electric project in Kulu district of the northern province Himachal Pradesh. Two parallel 30° inclined underground pressure shafts of 1.542m in length each will be excavated in different geological formations and lined with hexagonal concrete segments by a hard rock double shield TBM. That kind of heading will be a novelty to India and an innovative method for inclined pressure shafts. The 4.88m Mitsubishi DSTBM will be assembled underground on a swivelling steel platform especially designed for the launching as well as for the acceptance of the TBM in the upper cavern of each shaft. The hexagonal segmental lining system causes a significant higher job safety than an open TBM with conventional support. Each ring consists of four honeycomb segments with 20 cm thickness. After finalisation of the excavation a steel liner will be installed and concreted. The Joint Venture Jäger-Seli will perform the two pressure shafts as a sub-contractor for the Indian company Gammon India Ltd.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey are responsible for the evaluation of the mineral resources and potential of further planning areas included in the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program. The Bureau of Mines primarily evaluates mineral deposits and prospects within the areas. The Geological Survey naps the area's geology and conducts geochemical sampling. Evaluations are in conformance with the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The Hauser RARE II area, which consists of 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) within the Cleveland National Forest, is in southern San Diego County, California. The area, which forms the north slope of Hauser Canyon, ranges between 1,600 and 3,919 ft (490 m) in elevation. It is sparsely to densely covered with desert shrubs. The area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Peninsular Ranges batholith.

Pitch from low-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal was hydrogenated at cracking conditions in a continuous bench-scale unit to produce low-molecular-weight oils and tar acids. The pitch contained 15.6 pct benzene-insoluble material, 4.0 pct hexane-soluble oil, and 80.4 pct asphaltene by weight. At 475° C, 7,500 psig, and 1.5 hours residence time, hydrogenation products, based on the weight of pitch, were about 36 pct oil boiling below 325° C, 24 pct hexane-soluble heavy oil, 17 pct asphaltene, 1 pct benzene insolubles, and 12 pct hydrocarbon gases. The yield of tar acids boiling below 250° C was 4.3 pct, and the yields of C6 to C8 paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics were each less than 1.0 pct. The yield of tar acids was within the range of yields obtained by hydrogenation or high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal (2 to 5 wt pct). Yields of oil boiling below 325° C increased with increased residence time or temperature. There was little or no effect of residence time on yields of alkali- soluble material which contained tar acids. Yields of hydro-carbon gases increased markedly with an increase in temperature from 475° to 500° C. Lowering the hydrogen pressure to 4,500 psig resulted in yields similar to those obtained at 7,500 psig.

Trinitrotoluene is made by the direct nitration of toluene by a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids . The exact procedure varies , but the product , where Grade I of TNT is desired , is similar , and consists largely of material that has a melting and setting point of 80.6 °c . The purification consists of draining off the liquid portions , including the acid and liquid nitro compounds . The mass is crushed and washed until the TNT is acid - free . It may still have a low-melting point due to the presence of material of lower nitration. Other isomers also have the same effect . The crystal mass may be washed with a solution of sodium sulphite , thiosulphate , sulphuric acid , or with an organic solvent such as alcohol , benzene , or carbon tetrachloride , Where a very pure product is desired , the TNT is separated by fractional crystallization from solution in organic solvents . The TNT is If it forms In some cases the material is melted during purification . agitated as it cools to prevent solidification in a solid mass . in a solid mass , this is broken up and screened . There has been some question as to the effect of the different methods of purification on the strength and sensitiveness of TNT , although all methods left a product that would give satisfactory tests .

There is recent evidence that high frequency screening can be a viable alternative to hydrocyclone classification for a wide variety of grinding applications. However, since high frequency screening is a relatively new development, the decision to use screens generally must be based on full scale screening tests of a slurry material of interest. In this paper the authors employ mathematical simulation models as an aid to evaluating the use of screens versus hydrocyclones for closed circuit fine grinding. This approach is validated in a pilot plant study and then demonstrated for the design of full-scale grinding circuit, including classifier cost comparisons. For the case of maximum production rates versus product size, without a constraint on fine product solids densities, results indicate that screening with Derrick sandwich type cloths can give higher grinding circuit production rates with more narrowly sized products than when hydrocyclones are used. These results are explained in terms of the bypass and Sharpness Index of the respective classifier partition curves. Classifier cost comparisons for the full scale circuit show that although the installed cost of screens is substantially higher than equivalent capacity hydrocylone operations, even modest increases in circuit capacity caused by screens; can significantly reduce total grinding costs.

Mining activity around the world has increased significantly to meet stepped-up demand for various metals [1]. Apart from the target minerals, mining also generates huge amounts of unwanted minerals that exit the mines as overburden. Due to the active mining activity, high-grade mineral resources are being depleted, leaving inferior-quality ores [2]. The mining of low-grade ores further increases the amount of overburden/waste per ton of metal equivalent of ore mined. Currently, overburden and other mine waste is most commonly used in the construction industry and as feedstock for making cement and concrete, but the overburden can also be used as a source of valuable minerals and metals [3].

This paper presents a practical approach for determining the optimal spindle speed and the depth of cut in a milling operation within the ever-increasing economic and technical constrains. Analytical modeling and experimental work has been carried out to predict chatter in such operations. The stability lobes determined from this analysis were then used as a constraint in the optimization of the cutting process. The optimal cutting conditions are determined for two different objectives: maximum metal removal rate and minimum cost per unit. It is demonstrated that this approach can be generalized to impose multi-level constrains, e.g., surface integrity and machining accuracy. The approach presented in this work was examined and validated on three NC milling machines. The productivity improvement, cost reduction, while respecting part quality requirements, is demonstrated.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at this important conference attended by aspiring mining professionals, some of whom will become the leaders of the mineral resources industry that forms the solid foundation of AustraliaÆs past and that will fuel the exciting growth of AustraliaÆs future.I want to briefly touch on the history of our business, then look at the opportunities that exist in the contract mining industry and finally comment on what the educators need to consider in their curriculum to meet the needs of our business. Byrnecut started out as an idea in early-1987 developed by a group of four mining people. At the time the industry was on the high end of a mining boom, the era of the Bonds, Connels, Skases and so on. Riding on this wave of euphoria we borrowed $600 000 from the National Australia Bank and, without having enough knowledge to lose sleep over the potential risks, started business in mid-1987. The euphoria quickly evaporated with the 1987 October stock market crash. The bank pulled our overdraft, equipment finance rates increased to over 20 per cent per annum and my house was mortgagedseveral times over. The business learning curve was extreme for a young mining engineer who had developed his trade in the relatively sheltered environment of a large public mining house, namely WMC. We were somewhat bitter that the banks had done a runner. We were a private company, backing the business with personal assets with our shoulders to the wheel, whilst the Bonds of the world had theirnoses in the trough ripping off mum and dad shareholders. All of this had a sobering effect, namely keep your feet on the ground, stick to the knitting, work hard and worship cash flow. Since that stressful but adrenaline pumping beginning the company now employs over 600 people and is now working for major mining houses at over a dozen locations in Australia, east Africa and WesternEurope and the National bank is again our banker. On this basis I consider myself qualified for the subject of this speech.

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. It is common to use the gradation in collecting power of homologous series of xanthates, as well as the more specific effects of activators and depressants, to achieve the separation of sulphides.The original aim of the work was to ascertain whether sodium salts of fatty acids (anionic) and fatty amine aceta:tes (cationic) could be selected from a homologous series to achieve better selectivity in separation of nonsulphide minerals by flotation. "Milling operations commonly employ activated carbon to capture complexed gold from lixiviants in leaching processes. As the carbon moves through pipes, pumps, vessels, kilns and other processes in the gold leaching circuit, this consumable may experience losses by various mechanisms like attrition, breakage, and rupturing. Whenever possible, capturing the fine gold-bearing carbon portion of this stream could provide value to milling operations at low capital cost and manageable financial risk. Identifying, testing, and validating the successful payback of a low-tech flocculant system is described. However, the work more closely explores a Monte Carlo risk-based methodology for understanding the potential payback of this project at various confidence levels – an approach that many improvement projects can follow where some level of uncertainty exists.INTRODUCTION Gold milling operations commonly employ activated carbon to adsorb gold from solutions. Normal handling causes the carbon particles from this material to abrade, break, rupture to a size that becomes too small for further use in the process. Operations often concentrate on capturing the fine particles because gold is associated with the carbon and this metal content can be a valuable revenue stream for toll processing. However, the small particle sizes become difficult to separate from the process and can ultimately leave the facility in the waste stream. Hence, operations often place a great deal of care in capturing as much fine carbon as possible by a variety of methods including using screens, settling tanks, and chemical methods. Retrofitting a circuit to capture more carbon fines is common but can expose the operation to financial risk. Approaching this potential improvement by leveraging a Monte Carlo methodology can be effective in understanding the risk and the associated payback of a project at various confidence levels. This method provides a strong framework for capital go-no-go decisions and the structure to validate the potential project success before implementation."

The ready solubility of gold in dilute aqueous solutions of the cyanides of the alkalies or alkaline earths provides a convenient method for the separation of the precious metal -from the large surplus of associated materia1. The finely ground ore is pulped with a weak solution of cyanide, agitated to dissolve the gold, filtered and washed. The lowgrade filtrate is then clarified and the gold precipitated by some electronegative agent, the most usual being finely divided zinc or zinc dust. The slight precipitate is collectedon some form of filter coated with a filter aid, the filter cake being then known as "gold slime".A typical analysis of this slime is given in Table 1.

The operations of the Copper Range Co. are located in the Michigan copper district at the southern end of the Keweenaw Peninsula, 8 miles southwest of Hough ton (the center of the district). All the producing mines are situated in a long narrow zone paralleling the peninsula and occupying the central portion. This zone is about 25 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide. The important mines, in their order from northeast to southwest, are, Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet & Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Isle Royale, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion; the last three are operated by the Copper Range Co. The existence of copper deposits in this district became known soon after the discovery of America. Many references by early explorers show that copper was found in the possession of many of the American Indians that inhabited the Great Lakes region. There is abundant evidence that exploration of these copper deposits extended into prehistoric times; and some indication that the American Indians carried on operations shortly before the advent of white men. An account of the finding of primitive mining appears in the Government publications of 1850-51 by Foster and Whitney. Although earlier expeditions by white men had been made to the Keweenaw peninsula, an attempt to commercialize the district was not made until after 1765, when Alex. Henry, a British subject, searched the shores of Lake Superior for mineral treasure. His first expedition took him to the Ontonagon River, where he found the famous mass of copper now on exhibition at Washington. In 1771, he started operations along this river with a crew financed by English capital; but after much difficulty and only meager success he found only detached masses while in search for a major deposit. There is no record of any cxploration from 1774 to 1820. In 1838, Dr. Douglas Houghton was appointed state geologist. At elevated temperatures the oxide of silver is unstable in the air at atmospheric pressure, consequently no external oxide scale forms upon pure silver under conditions of high-temperature annealing. When small quantities of certain alloying elements are present in the silver, the formation of a thin external scale is possible1 and in addition there may form a subscale composed of the oxide of the solute element precipitated within the body of the silver. Norbury2 and Leroux and Raub3 have reported internal oxidation (subscaleiormation) in alloys of silver with 2, 7.5, and 30 per cent of copper. The presence of the subscale is believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the objectionable "fire mark" in Sterling silver.4 Several other alloys of silver, after oxidizing heat-treatments, are known to exhibit undesirable polishing characteristics that may be the result of internal oxidation. Except for the absence of an external scale of silver oxide, it is to be anticipated that silver alloys will prove to be very similar in their oxidation behavior to the alloys of copper, the oxidation characteristics of which have been studied in some detai1.5,6 The present research confirms this anticipation. The oxidation of a series of 20 dilute alloys of silver has been studied metallographically; some types of subscale not encountered among the copper alloys have been found. Instances of internal oxidation in alloys of most of the metals of the 1-6 and VIII groups of the periodic system are on record, but evidence of this type of oxidation in alloys of the metals of the intermediate groups is lacking. A number of the metals of the intermediate group, among them cadmium, lead, tin, and zinc, appear to provide the conditions essential to subscale formation; i.e., they form oxides with a relatively low negative free energy of formation, they dissolve other metals that form more stable oxides, and, presumably, oxygen will diffuse through them. In a study of 40 alloys of these white metals only a few cases of internal oxidation have been found. The probable reasons for this difference in behavior will be discussed presently. MOIL Limited is operating 7 underground and 3 opencast mines in central India and producing annually more than 1.2 million tonnes of various grades of manganese ore. The underground mines are operating at shallow - 90 m at Munsar mine to moderate - 353 m at Balaghat mine below the surface with horizontal cut and fill (HCF) or its variant method of stoping with post filling by hydraulic sand stowing. The Munsar mine is being worked underground since 1903. The opencast mining is presently stopped. The ore body below the opencast quarry is geological continuity of the area excavated in past by opencast method of mining. The underground mining is done through the adit in three levels i.e. 270’L, 220’L, 170’L and by incline in western part of the property at 70’L. The horizontal drift development has been developed in the manganese ore body with sill drive of 5 m above the sill pillar in lower level at 70’L and barrier pillar of 5 m thickness is left for protection of upper level at 170’L. Valuable mineral has been locked in sill pillar and therefore rock mechanics investigations have been carried out. On the basis of study now the drift development has been carried out in footwall rock at 70’L, (-) 30’L and below levels and it has improved the mineable manganese ore by about 20%. In this modified HCF stope design, an alternative fill material in place of sand, which has been developed in house by use of overburden (OB) material after treatment, has been used for hydraulic stowing. The experimental trials find out that the alternative fill material of OB is more compact and forming a non expansion floor for the men and machines in the stope. This will certainly help in the introduction of mobile underground mining equipment for drilling in the stopes and mechanical mucking, transportation and loading of the ROM. The paper presents rock mechanics investigations and future use of alternative fill material of OB for better safety and productivity at Munsar Mine of MOIL. This paper will discuss the most efficient and effective way to use shape charges when considering standoff distances and the amount of an explosive to be used. For each shape charge test that was performed, a one inch diameter copper liner of 90o was used. Different standoffs for each shape charge were tested to see which one would penetrate the deepest into rolled homogenous armor steel (RHC 44). It was determined that a standoff of three cone diameters provides the deepest penetration. In addition to testing for optimal standoff distances, the effects of overfilling as well as under filling a shape charge with explosive was tested against a shape charge with the bare minimum amount of explosive for correct detonation. These “fill” tests were all performed at a standoff of three cone diameters. Overfilling has little to no effect towards penetrating deeper into a target while under filling a shape charge has an effect of shorter penetration. C-4 explosive was the main explosive for all shape charges.

Changes in magnetic properties with particle size are used to study the precipitation process in a Cu-Co alloy. In particular, the effect of a field during aging in producing anisotropy is shown to occur entirely during the growth of the particles, after precipitation is complete. HEAT-treatment in a magnetic field is done commercially to improve the magnetic properties of a number of materials. These can be divided into solid-solution alloys and precipitation alloys. The Permalloys are representative of the first type, and magnetic annealing greatly increases their maximum permeability. On the other hand, in precipitation alloys such Alnico 5 the important result is an increase in maximum energy product. The effect of the field in all cases is to bring about an additional magnetic anisotropy, uniaxial in nature, which makes the hysteresis loop more upright when measured in the direction in which the field was applied. The structural origin of the anisotropy brought about by magnetic annealing is not well understood. In the solid solution alloys, one possible explanation is based on ordering.' Another possibility is the orientation of like-atom pairs.' The precipitation systems known to respond to magnetic heat treatment are Alnico 2, in which the effect was first discovered," Alnico 5, cobalt ferrite (oxide),' and Cu-Co alloys.3 n these materials, the field affects the precipitation process itself in some way.
