The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

The applicability of this earlier chart was limited by the fact that it was based on the work of Burke and Keyes² and Kvalnes and Gaddy3 whose experiments were conducted with pure methane, the adjustments suggested for natural gases of higher specific gravity were unsatisfactory except within limited ranges of temperatures and pressures, and precise interpolation was difficult. The extensive work of G. G. Brown, D. L. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. This paper describes studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to achieve its goal of developing methods for increased recovery and utilization of valuable constituents in a wide variety of domestic and industrial wastes, In this particular study, 36 units of obsolete electronic equipment from military aircraft were disassembled into their modular components by hand to determine materials distribution. Further modular disassembly into individual parts was used to identify metal composition. After identifying the metals in some of the more difficult to dismantle modules, similar modules were grouped together, shredded, mechanically separated, and using metal composition data from hand separation, classified along with the hand-separated materials. Although this equipment is normally classified as law-value iron-bearing aluminum, data were obtained that indicated the potential for moderately higher value classification. The electronic units were classified as to precious metals, copper, iron, and aluminum contents, and scrap values were estimated.

Sendo assim, para tornar este estudo mais amplo, serão obtidas curvas J-R de um aço estrutural com o objetivo de elaborar um roteiro metodológico para obtenção de curvas J-R. O ensaio de tenacidade à fratura para obtenção da curva J-R foi conduzido utilizando a técnica do corpo de prova único (single specimen) empregando o método da flexibilidade no descarregamento (unloading compliance), segundo a norma de ensaios ASTM E1820. Para este estudo, foram utilizados corpos de prova compactos C(T) de espessura B=10,0 mm, largura W=2B e uma relação aproximada entre o tamanho de trinca (a) e a largura, a/W=0,5.

Cementation rates ulere studied by rotating an elec-tropolished or etched copper strip in aqueous solutions, of either perchloric acid or alkaline cyanide, containing silver ions. The rates of cementation were more rapid in acidic media than in cyanide media. In both, the rates varied with the rate of rotation of the copper strip. The deposits formed in the acidic solutions were finely divided, loosely adhering powders. Those formed in the cyanide solutions were dense and adherent. The presence of the deposits influenced the cementation rates. In the acidic solutions the rate was enhanced, possibly because of the increased cathodic area. In the alkaline solutions the rates were decreased in the presence of the deposits. This has been attributed to restricting the diffusion of the copper ion from the rnetal outward into the bulk of the solution. In an earlier paper1 the authors described a kinetic study of the cementation of palladium on copper in perchloric acid solutions. That work indicated that there were two stages in the palladium cementation process. The first, more rapid stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of Pd11 ions to the copper surface and/or by chemical reaction at the surface. The second stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the copper surface, through the deposit, out into the main body of solution. The effect of the type of deposit on the rate of cementation is of particular interest because it may be one of the primary features involved when large quantities of metal are to be cemented from solution. No substantial investigations of the effect seem to have been made. Accordingly, an extension of the previous work was arranged to study the cementation of silver on copper. This system was selected because of the convenience of the analytical methods, the previously established technology with copper, and the fact that the system could be studied in both acidic and alkaline media. By selecting perchloric acid and alkaline cyanide solutions as the media, it was hoped that some assessment might be made of the effects, on cementation, of having the silver ion present in a virtually uncomplexed state and in a highly complexed state. EXPERIMENTAL The cementation rates were studied, as previously described,' by rotating a copper strip (1.0 by 23.2 cm) clamped to the peripheral surface of a lucite cylinder. The solutions were kept at constant temperatures (±0.05°C) under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, and samples were taken periodically for analysis. The initial solution volume was 1000 ml and the sample volume 5 ml. The initial silver(1) ion concentrations were made low (0.5 to 1.0 x 10-4 moles per liter) to minimize the influence of the cemented deposit on rates. The solutions were prepared by dilution of suitable aliquots of silver perchlorate and silver cyanide stock solutions. Both stock solutions were prepared from purified silver powder (Johnson, Matthey, and Mallory Ltd.) with redistilled deoxygenated water, and they were kept under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. To prepare the stock solutions, weighed amounts of silver powder were dissolved with nitric acid. For the AgC104 stock solution the silver nitrate solution was evaporated twice to near dryness with perchloric acid and then made up to volume: For the NaAg(cN)2 stock solution, the silver ions were precipitated with sodium hydroxide solution. The precipitate was filtered, washed thoroughly with redistilled water, dissolved with 1.1 times the required stoichiometric amount of sodium cyanide solution, and made up to volume. The small amounts of free perchloric acid and sodium cyanide present in the stock solutions were disregarded in the preparation of the solutions. The copper strips were cut accurately from 0.025-in. sheet (American Metal Climax OFHC brand) and annealed for 1.5 hr at 470°C in a stream of nitrogen. Analyses of the solution samples for silver and copper were done with a Techtron Model AA-3 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Calibration standards of the same composition as the experimental solutions were prepared and analyzed simultaneously with the samples. No difficulty was experienced in the analyses, and the reproducibility was within 1 to 2 pct in both alkaline cyanide and perchloric acid solutions.

"Respirable high-silica particles from four coal mines. a clay mine and a tunnelling site were analysed for silicon vs aluminum composition by performing scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS) at electron accelerating voltages of 20 kiloelectron volts (keV). The same particles were analysed at 5 keV to determine possible differences in surface vs bulk composition. In some cases high-silica particles exhibited a decrease in the ratio of silicon to aluminium K-alpha line intensities with decreasing electron beam accelerating voltage. This behaviour is consistent with aluminosilicate surface contamination or occlusion of a silica particle. Some 20 high-silica particles were analysed from each of 10 samples. Powdered aluminosilicate glass was used as a control for the behaviour of silica with a homogeneous distribution of aluminium in the particle. Significant differences were found between the control and sample means for an Illinois bituminous coal mine dust, two western and one central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. and a clay mine and mill dust sample, but not for an anthracite coal mine dust and two central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. INTRODUCTIONRESPIRABLE dust quartz content commonly is measured on bulk samples by using i.r. spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction. For research purposes, individual particle-by particle SEM-EDS analysis at 20-30 keV electron beam accelerating potential may be used also. Such measurements have not provided an unambiguous association of quartz content with occupational pulmonary disease prevalence in exposed workers (WALTON et al., 1977). Rather, there is evidence that coal rank modifies the relationship between dust exposure and pneumoconiosis development (WAL TON et al., 1977; ROBOCK and BAUER, 1990; ATTFIELD and MORRING, in press). SEM-EDS analysis was performed to measure the silicon fraction, Si/(Si +Ai), at 20 and at 5 keV on high-silica particles to determine if some respirable quartz particles generated by mining exhibit heterogenous composition with depth (WALLACE et al., 1990), which might affect the bioavailability of the quartz surface."

THE geometrical interpretation of transmission electron micrographs of hcp metals is more complicated than the equivalent interpretation of cubic metal for two reasons: firstly, prominent zone axes are not in general normal to prominent planes, so that a simple diffraction pattern often corresponds to a nonra-tional foil plane; and secondly, the Miller-Bravais sys-tem of indexing directions is not easy to visualize. In this, the indexing is referred to the Bravais four-axis system, and the direction is labeled [hkil], chosen so that and I are shown in Fig. 1. Methane is recognized as one of the prime causes of underground mine disasters around the globe. A cost-effective mine ventilation system and methane control is required to ensure a safe and productive environment in an underground mine whilst keeping energy usage and operating cost at minimum. Typically methane enters a mine environment or tunnel from localized distributed sources at high initial concentration. Hence, an understanding of its dispersion from discrete sources is important to design a methane management system via effective ventilation. This study employs computational fluid dynamics to model methane dispersion in an underground tunnel which has a number of discrete sources of methane and effective ways to dilute and or disperse it. Air flow distribution within the tunnel as well as methane dispersion is simulated by solving the governing transport equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions. First, the effectiveness of ventilation duct placement is examined. Several possibilities are explored and investigated. It is found that the common configuration utilized in underground mine performs best as compared to other configurations in maintaining the concentration of methane below permissible levels. Next, a novel intermittent airflow ventilation system is proposed and evaluated via simulation with the goal of reducing the energy cost whilst maintaining methane level in the mining face below the allowable level. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various factors influencing the effectiveness and performance of this novel intermittent ventilation system. This study will provide some new ideas for designing an efficient and effective underground mine ventilation system by lowering the net average amount of air that needs to be circulated in the tunnel for a safe operation. "Abstract - The Minas de Oro Cu-Au skarn and replacement deposits are located in the highlands of central Honduras, 90 km north-northwest of the capital of Tegucigalpa.The deposits formed in Cretaceous volcano-sedimentary rocks following the emplacement of an early Paleocene granodiorite to dacite intrusive complex. Three types of skarn (Type IA, IB, and IC) and a low-temperature replacement mineralization (Type II) are recognized. Type IA skarn consists of massive brown-green andradite and lesser magnetite and pyroxene. Type IB skarn has magnetite + hematite as the main constituent and garnet <50%. Type IC skarn comprises >50% pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite with interstitial garnet or pyroxene. Au and Cu occur in potentially economic concentrations in all skarn types while other metals such as Ag, Pb, Zn, and Mo are locally present in significant quantities. The highly variable distribution and nature of the skarn deposits is controlled by: (1) intrusive activity, (2) composition of host rocks, (3) faulting and fracturing, and (4) attitude of host carbonates.Type II Au-Cu-As mineralization occurs in calcareous sandstone and conglomerate 2 km distal from skarns and comprises clots of Cu sulfides hosted within a zone of brecciation and quartz flooding. Garnet and/or magnetite skarn is not present and the mineralizing event appears to have been a low-temperature replacement type.The similarity of coeval Au-Cu-Fe skarns in central Guerrero, southern Mexico to Minas de Oro skarns, and the similar local stratigraphy is consistent with the generally accepted theory that the Chortis block originated from southern Mexico and during the Tertiary moved southeast to its present position."

A Monte Carlo simulation technique has been used to study dynamic recrystallization in polycrystals. A continuum microstructure of the polycrystal is modeled employing a discrete lattice. The response of the material to hot deformation is simulated by adding stored energy and recrystallization nuclei continuously with time. The experimentally observed nonuniform character of deformation substructures is modeled by employing a phenomenological expression for inhomogeneous distribution of the stored energy. All simulations were performed on HP-Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstations. A program written in FORTRAN with use of PHIGS graphics library calls was used to interactively monitor the current state of the matrix and all relevant parameters: deformation stress, average grain size and effective nucleation rate. Visual analysis of the simulated microstructure allows a better understanding of the data developed by averaging over a number of very long Monte Carlo runs. Since the essential features of dynamic recrystallization are accurately reproduced by the model, it is used to discuss the role of the controlling mechanisms of the dynamic recrystallization in real polycrystal.

The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing suphide concentrates is reviewed along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information, which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte isdiscussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

The teaching of courses in geology, mining and extractive metallurgy in Australian universities is undergoing significant change largely as a result of the initiative taken by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA). This has resulted in a major program aimed at developing national under- and postgraduate courses in selected areas with the aim of making these available to a consortium of participating universities. Murdoch University, together with the A J Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy has been commissioned to develop the course in hydrometallurgy. Progress in the development of this course will be discussed in terms of overall philosophy, content and mode of delivery. Aspects of the extension to a Web-based course will also be summarized. Murdoch University has also established a hydrometallurgical pilot plant on the campus and the results of the first continuous operation for several months using under- and postgraduate students as operators will be discussed from the point of view of practical training and providing an interface with the local industry.

This case history describes the foundation design and construction for the New Mississippi River Bridge, presently under construction in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1,500 ft (457.2 m) main span of the cable-stayed bridge is supported by two delta tower pylons in the river, with anchor piers on each bank. The final foundation design was completed as a part of an Alternate Technical Concept (ATC) proposal by the winning construction team, and utilized drilled shafts up to 11.5-ft (3.5-m) diameter that were socketed into very hard limestone. As part of the ATC foundation design, a full-scale, bi-directional static load test was performed to verify the design and allow use of higher resistance values. This paper presents the results of the site exploration, construction of the load test shaft, details of the load testing, and a comparison of the test results with various design parameters.

Underground mining of stone in the US is increasing, as is the depth of overburden above the mines. Data gathered from mine visits, maps, discussion with operators and numerical simulation have been used to investigate pillar design and recommend safe practice. Many pillars have slender shapes with relatively large adjacent mine openings: width-to-height ratios range from 0.54 to 3.13 and extraction ratios from 0.56 to 0.91. The pillar material is often very strong and average overburden only 80 m, but occasional failure due to excessive local stress has occurred where pillar size had been unintentionally reduced, overburdens were greater than 200 m, width-to-height ratios were less than 1.25 or extraction ratios were greater than 0.83. Pillars with width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail under excessive stress. When width-to-height ratios fall below 1.0, defects such as through-running discontinuities can have a significant influence on stability. Dip, orientation and material properties are also important

Coal is found in every major geographic region throughout Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852 over 100 small mines have opened and closed. Last years production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly the utilization of Alaska&apos;s abundant coal resources presents political, economic and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure one illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and western United States. The Arctic region of Alaska generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The Central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of western United States. The Southcentral and Southeastern regions has a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the west coast of the United States.

"The cathodic kinetics of aluminum deposition from aluminum chloridealkali chloride melts was studied by use of electro-cnemical transient techniques at 700 °C. Aluminum deposited as an insoluble product on a glassy carbon electrode and as a partly soluble product on a tungsten electrode. The deposition was found to be a simple diffusion controlled process involving the exchange of three electrons. The diffusion coefficient of aluminum chloride was calculated - 4.sx10-s cm2 ·S-I in AlCl3 -NaCl-LiCl melts and 2.6x10-s cm2 ·S-' in AlCl3 -NaCl-KCl melts. For AlCl3 -NaCl-CsCl system the diffusion coefficient exhibited some uncertainty due to nucleation. The determined rate constant of aluminum deposition reaction was on the order of 10-' -10-2 cm'S:' Constant potential electrolysis was carried out. TiB2 was well wetted by aluminum. The species of melts penetrated into graphite and glassy carbon but not into tungsten. The diffusion coefficient of species in glassy carbon was evaluated.IntroductionAluminum chloride electrolysis is attractive for its power saving of 30%. Different process to circumvent the conventional chlorization to obtain aluminum chloride economically, such as directly chlorizating mixture of Al~03 and C in a cell with A-shaped laminated bipolar electrodes by rising chlorine (1), or by use of a composite anode (2), will promote the electrolysis technology to be realized industrially. With the appearance of the Alcoa process periodically there are studies on the kinetics of aluminum deposition. Some discrepancies seem to exist on the mechanism of aluminum deposition. Borne studies (3,4,5) showed that the deposition of aluminum was hindered by diffusion process in the melts. M.Gabco et a1. (6) claimed a preceding dissociation of a complex being the rate controlled step. This paper presents our results on the mechanism of aluminum deposition from the study by use of transient techniques and some results from constant potential electrolysis."

Blastholes fired in a pattern with a constant initiation delay create a frequency in the ground vibration similar to that from a percussion instrument, such as a drum, in the air. A constant firing delay generates a prime or forcing frequency into the ground motion. The forcing frequency may then be modified by ground transmission characteristics into subharmonics of the forcing frequency. The moving vibration source between blastholes also creates a frequency shift because of a Doppler effect. Other wave interactions may form beats. The effects are exacerbated by the accurate firing times of electronic detonators. This paper demonstrates how observations of wavetraces and frequency spectral analysis were used to recognise:Doppler effect and frequency ellipsoidssubharmonics (and sub-subharmonics) of the forcing frequencybeat formation that may double or triple peak particle velocity (PPV) levels.Recognition of beats permitted techniques to be used to control ground vibration from coal overburden blasting to limits deemed to cause no further instability in a slip failure.
