Longwall mining has historically been considered an application for only deep reserves. This has changed in the recent past as longwall has become competitive with surface mining. Many resources marked for stripping now he in the domain of longwall. Today, the best longwall mines compete with strip mines operating in even the lowest stripping ratios. Longwall mining has become more widely applicable than it ever has been in the past and it is now generally considered the method of choice in situations where high levels of coal production are required. But the best way to use longwall mining has become less certain with the opportunities that highwall access provides. Wall-to-wall mining is the use of retreating longwall developed from and retreating toward a highwall. As a surface mine reaches its ultimate highwall, the opportunity for longwall punch mining or wall-to-wall mining is obvious. There are several clear operating advantages to operating a longwall in this way and where highwalls are available, the best economic decision will generally favor planning a direct approach. Yet wall-to-wall is not applicable in every situation even when highwalls are available. Moreover, the advantages of wall-to-wall mining do not always justify the cost of trenching or box cuts to access coal . However, many tactical advantages of operating from the highwall can be realized with the use of specially equipped blind drilled or raised bored shafts. This paper discusses novel techniques for a shaft assisted mining system which permits the addition of conveyor structure and mine systems from the surface to the face for advance and retreat mining with longwall, shortwall or room and pillar panels.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been gaining a significant edge in the construction industry over the last decade. BIM allows gathering all building information in one shared database that can help all construction entities better understand, integrate and visualize all work progress from inception to operation of the building. The main purpose behind BIM is to bring all project participants together (Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultant) since the initial stages of a project allowing them to cooperate and work as a team in the promise of an increased productivity, reduced cost, enhanced quality and faster delivery. However, a full-fledged implementation of BIM tools and benefits is not yet achieved in the construction industry and remains a debatable issue for researchers and practitioners in the construction field. This paper aims at assessing BIM awareness and usage in the Lebanese construction industry through conducting interviews with contractors, architects and consultants that are key players in the Lebanese market. A comprehensive literature review about BIM adoption in some developed countries and in the surrounding region is also provided in order to better evaluate the Lebanese industry status in comparison with foreign industries. This research sheds the light on BIM awareness of the different construction parties in the Lebanese market, assesses the extent of its current use, identifies the pertaining implementation challenges, and provides recommendations to enhance BIM role in the Lebanese construction industry.

A theoretical analysis of steam stimulation is presented for single sands. The analysis includes the effect of steam production and most of the effects of heat conduction. The results show the effects of a number of important variables on the performance of an idealized well under steam stimulation. Calculated responses are presented which indicate the effects of steam production, amount of steam injected, water production, formation thickness and formation damage. Results indicate that steam production can cause large reductions in the heat contained in the formation. This effect can be eliminated by drawdown control. Water production reduces the amount of oil produced during stimulation. The optimum amount of steam to inject depends on economic factors as well as the well response. In many cases, the increased temperature resulting from stimulation reduces oil viscosity near the well sufficiently to overcome the effects of formation damage even if the damage is not removed during steam injection. Calculated responses for thin sands are more favorable than anticipated. INTRODUCTION Little has been published on the theory of steam stimulation'-' despite the interest it has created and the wide variation in well responses. The results of the present analysis provide an insight into steam stimulation, and the methods employed provide a foundation for future work. Analyses presented in Refs. 1 and 2 are very limited and apply to gravity drainage conditions. Ref. 3 contains an analysis similar to the one presented here. The idealized models used and the assumptions made in Ref. 3 are different from those used in this paper. The analysis assumes that after steam injection has heated a small portion of the volume within the radius of drainage of a single uniform sand, a shut-in soaking period is allowed before returning the well to production. The effects of gravity, capillarity, transient pressure and water-sensitive sands are neglected. The injection and soaking times are assumed short compared to the stimulated production time. The initial temperature is assumed uniform; thus, the results apply primarily to first-cycle stimulation. The effects of gas production other than steam are neglected, and the water-oil ratio during production is assumed constant. Steam stimulation involves the simultaneous variation of the temperature, pressure and saturations. General mathematical equations for these variations are complicated and can be very difficult to solve. Simplified equations based on idealized models are used to reduce the mathematics sufficiently to allow approximate solutions to be obtained. DISCUSSION INJECTION An idealized model for which heat conduction is neglected is used to represent the behavior of a well during steam injection. The mathematics for this model is presented in Appendix A which also contains an approximate solution for the behavior of the no-conduction model. SOAKING During soaking, the well is shut in. Only the temperature, pressure and saturation distributions at the end of soaking are needed in the analysis. During soaking the heat is considered to be conducted in a uniform medium from an initially uniformly-heated circular cylinder confined to the producing interval. At the end of soaking the saturations and pressures are assumed to correspond to the cold zone. Analysis of the heat flow during soaking is included in the next section. The radius of the heated cylinder is calculated from the following heat balance (for constant quality steam injection). At the end of the soaking period it is assumed that little or no free gas is present near the well, and that the soaking period has been sufficiently long that the steam zone has had time to expand and the steam has condensed. The condition where there is no soaking is considered in the next section. PRODUCTION In this section, an approximate method is presented for solving the equations of heat and fluid flow associated with the production of oil and water during steam stimulation. Where initial pressure drawdowns are sufficient to cause steam to flow into the wellbore, steam production is assumed to occur within a short initial adjustment period (Appendix B). The production practices followed soon after the well is returned to production can have a large influence on the amount of oil produced during the stimulation cycle. Under most conditions, there is a period of time in which some or all of the water in the heated zone is converted into steam and produced. Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. (San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) INTRODUCTION IT is rather gratifying that in the field of the manufacture 'of refractories, in which, as a whole, foreign practice has surpassed us, the United States stands pre-eminent in the making of silica brick. In some instances European manufacturers have refused point-blank to credit the possibility of making to such specifications as are common with us, until the actual 'completed shapes were shipped for inspection. But both the manufacturer and consumer in foreign lands are now frankly learning from us, and benefiting by our advanced practice in this field, as is evidenced by the orders placed here and the efforts put forth abroad to come up to the standard of American-made material. In no metallurgical operation has the employment of silica brick spread with. such leaps and bounds as in the building of plants for the carbonization of coal, particularly in the byproduct coke oven. Today, in practically all types of oven, the structure above the floor level (except the facings) is of silica, while in the recuperative and in some regenerative types, its use is extended to that portion of the oven below the floor as well. By reason of the fact that there are a number of classes of refractories of higher silica content than the usual so-called fire-clay brick, there is sometimes a misunderstanding as to the class of material referred to as "silica" brick. We here refer only to a brick having a silica content of 94 per cent. or more and made usually from quartzite rock with a small percentage of lime as a binder. The term "silica" brick is sometimes rather loosely applied to brick front highly siliceous clays, or to a quartzite refractory of mingled fire-clay and quartz rock; but such products are not considered in this discussion.

The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

The split-lining structure was newly developed for the air-tight lining of the underground compressed air storage cavern. This structure consists of separated reinforced concrete (RC) segments and air-tight membrane. It is most important for the Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine (CAES-G/T) system to develop the economical lining. In order to verify the applicability of split-lining structure, CAES-G/T pilot plant was constructed and operated for 6 months. We confirmed the practical usefulness and safety of this system through the operation. This paper presents the mechanical behaviour of surrounding rock mass and the lining structure observed through the operation of CAES-G/T pilot plant. Nous avons mis au point une structure de revêtement modulaire pour le revêtement des cavernes souterraines hermétiques à pression. Ce revêtement est composé de segments de béton armé et de membranes hermétiques. Il était très important, pour le CAES-G/T (Compressed Air Energy Storage Gas Turbine), de développer un revêtement économique. Afin de vérifier l’aptitude d’application de notre revêtement modulaire, nous avons construit un système pilote CAES-G/T et nous avons effectué des essais de fonctionnement pendant six mois. Ces essais nous ont permis de confirmer l’utilité et la sécurité du système. A travers le présent rapport, nous rendons compte de la structure de ce nouveau type de revêtement et du comportement mécanique de la masse rocheuse environnante que nous avons pu observer au cours desdits essais. Als luftdichter Druckbehälter wurde eine gegliederte Belagsstruktur für tief unterirdisch liegende Felshöhlungen entwickelt. Diese Struktur ist aus Stahlbetonabdeckung und luftdichter Plane aufgebaut. Bei der Entwicklung des Pressluftgasturbinen – Stromerzeugungssystems (CAES-G/T) war es die wichtigste Aufgabe, einen wirtschaftlichen Belag zu entwickeln. Deswegen wurde zum Nachweis der Effektivität der gegliederten Belagsstruktur eine Pilotanlage errichtet und 6 Monate lang betrieben. Durch den Betrieb konnten wir die Praktikabilität und Sicherheit des Systems bestätigen. Dieser Aufsatz ist ein Bericht über das Verhalten der durch Betrieb der CAES-G/T Pilotanlage beobachteten Belagsstruktur und umliegenden Felsmasse.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

The Bureau of Mines conducted compressive strength tests on model pillars of selected rock types with each pillar containing a critically oriented plane of weakness. The objective of these tests was to determine if a significant increase in the strength of the model pillar could be obtained by either (1) installing tensioned rock bolts through the pillar and normal to the plane of weakness, or (2) wrapping tensioned steel wire ropes around the pillar at uniformly spaced intervals along the pillar. Equations based on Coulomb's failure criterion are developed to predict uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars that are either rock-bolted or wire-roped. Laboratory compressive strength tests on unbolted and bolted model pillars of sandstone, marble, Indiana limestone, and oil shale containing a plane of weakness oriented at 45° showed that the bolted pillars are stronger than the unbolted pillars by 84, 31, 52, and 28 pct, respectively. Laboratory compres-sive strength tests on nonroped and roped model pillars of Texas limestone, sandstone, and granite containing planes of weakness showed that the roped pillars were stronger than the nonroped pillars by factors ranging from 1.01 to 2.41, depending upon the angle of the plane of weakness and the rock type. Rocks with a low Young's modulus benefited most by the wire-roping technique.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona Project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Perú, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, Project development occurred against the backdrop of a Presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are outlined and discussed in the context of an evolving strategy.

SAG Mill Grinding Design Versus Geometallurgy - Getting it Right for Competent Ores Smarter processing for the future, in the area of SAG mill design involves accurate grinding test data, completing final mill design in less than three months, and at a cost of less than US$80 000. More detailed variability testing on the other hand takes longer, is more expensive, and is used for throughput optimisation for an existing or newly purchased mill. This paper shows that SAGDesignTM testing is excellent for new SAG plant design due to relatively low cost per test and the ability to do more testing for a limited budget on larger projects. It also briefly examines a way to develop proper geometallurgical ore hardness information on every block in the mine model, from the more detailed analysis data.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.

The Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential. A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch Joint Venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

Potassium, is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is found throughout the world in both soluble and insoluble forms. It is only the soluble forms that are economically attractive to process, primarily chlorides and sulfates, with potassium chloride by far the most important potash salt. Sylvinite ore, a mechanical mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is a natural mineral of potassium. This ore is found in commercial quantities in the Permian sin region near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Vast tonnages of high-grade de, low-clay-content ores have been mined and concentrated during the past 40 years; however, these deposits are rapidly being depleted leaving high-clay, low-grade ore reserves of over 135 million tons. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 8 percent clay slimes; cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods. The present concentration processes for potash minerals in Carlsbad relate mainly to ores containing 1 percent or less of clay-slimes with a K20 content of 20 to 25 percent to yield products to meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95 percent KC1 equivalent to 60 percent K20. Discoveries of potash ore in Saskatchewan, Canada, have shifted the emphasis on expansion outside the United States. Presently, the American companies are looking to Canada for future growth, expenditures, and expansion. Four of the seven companies operating near Carlsbad are produces of Canadian potash despite the large investment sons required for shaft sinking and milling installations.

In the Evraz Highveld production process, iron ore is prereduced in rotary kilns prior to charging into submerged arc furnaces (SAFs). Owing to the highly aggressive slags that are formed within the combustion zones of these kilns, chrome-oxide-containing lowcement castables have been used for some years in the kiln lining. Due to concerns around the potentially harmful effects should Cr(V1) be present in the spent linings, Highveld and its suppliers of kiln castables devoted time to developing alternative chrome-free lining materials. Such materials needed to be cost-effective and ensure good performance and improved kiln availability. This paper discusses all the parameters surrounding this development. Effective chemical grouting represents a technical and economic solution to many challenges related to soil stabilization and blocking the flow of water. Chemical grouts are facing increasing demands in durability, environmental impact and value. To better meet these challenges, a novel and cost effective process was developed to produce a sodium silicate that increases the ratio (i.e. silica to alkali) beyond what has been used in traditional silicate-based grouts. The move to a lower sodium form of silicate was anticipated to have two desirable performance enhancements; a reduction in leachable sodium and improvement in the durability of the silicate grout. An in-depth study was performed at the University of Western Ontario Geotechnical Research Centre to quantify improvement in durability as well as other performance properties such as compressive strength. The study began by first modelling the gelation time and reaction kinetics of the high ratio sodium silicate over a range of silicate concentrations using two different setting agents as well as with/without a hardener. As expected, reducing the level of sodium produced a much more water resistant grout. These same formulations also showed a four order magnitude reduction in permeability. Somewhat surprising, test results showed the higher ratio silicate having much higher compressive strength. At the time of this abstract, the high ratio silicate was moving to the trial stage for geotechnical applications while the petroleum industry was further along with several successful field trials for water blocking as well as cement remediation. This paper will review the chemistry, testing and features of this next generation form of sodium silicate. Introduction Sodium silicate based grouts have been used for decades for soil stabilization and water control. Over the years, several silicate-based systems have been tailored for specific application conditions to maximize performance and reduce cost. Past research has also focused on the selection of setting agents and hardeners for silicate grouts. A constant in the development effort has been the grade of sodium silicate. The vast majority of chemical grouts have been formulated using a ~3.2 ratio sodium silicate. As a very brief overview on the meaning of “ratio” and why it is so important to performance properties. The ratio describes the proportion of sand to alkali or SiO2:Na2O used to make different grades of sodium silicate. Comparing a 2.2 ratio to a 3.2 ratio, it is easier to polymerize and set the 3.2 ratio. Upon setting and forming a silica gel, the system has higher compressive strength values and improved durability with a reduced level of syneresis (i.e. shrinkage). This leads to the question if 3.2 is better than 2.2 why not go to 4.2 or higher?

The effects of operating variables on water transport to the over- flow, classification of hydrophilic particles and the recovery of copper and molybdenum from a low-grade porphyry ore are presented. Recoveries of copper and molybdenum exceeding 90 percent at a grade of 8 percent Cu and 0.2 percent Mo were realized for minus 100 mesh (1 49 µm) material at retention times of less than 500 milliseconds. The rapid rate of flotation and the effective separation of fine particles for an air sparged hydrocyclone appear to be due to directed interaction of particles in a high force field with numerous freshly formed small bubbles. This interaction occurs in the swirl flow developed by the system and is analyzed in terms of collision and induction time phenomena.

Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. "The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."
