For the first time in its history, the George A. Fox Conference let its focus venture away from the friendly confines of the East Coast of the United States to spend part of the one-day conference looking at projects from around the globe. With a record-setting attendance of 377 people, the conference, titled ?Tunneling: An international perspective,? opened with a keynote speech from special guest In-Mo Lee, professor, Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He is also the president of the ITA-AITES. In a sweeping presentation, Lee walked the packed audience through some of the most fascinating and challenging projects in his home country. Among the projects he spoke about were Korea?s longest railway tunnel, the Solahn Tunnel and the Inje Tunnel, a freeway tunnel that is 11.94 km (7.4 miles) long.

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

A computer software package, named CFIRE, for the general ventilation network analysis and fire control, mine fire and/or coal spontaneous combustion, has been developed at Xian Mining Institute in China. It is a multipurpose package with adequate capacities of ventilation map drawing, ventilation network analysis, gob fire simulation, steady state ventilation simulation and transient state ventilation simulation. It was written in a user-friendly style, driven by menus, facilitated by on-screen messages and supported by the allowance of user interferences. CFIRE has used up-to-date research findings focussing on the practical needs of coal mines. This paper discusses briefly also the relevant theoretical principles on which this package has been perceived.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) operates the Betze-Post openpit and the Meikle and Rodeo underground mines. Because the majority of the orebody is located below the water table, mining at BGMI requires a significant dewatering program. BGMI has a comprehensive dewatering and water management system that experienced a peak dewatering rate of 4,400 L/s in the mid 1990s. Changes to the hydrologic/hydrogeologic system caused by the mine dewatering have been monitored by an extensive network of groundwater monitoring wells and surface water monitoring stations, which cover about 1,550 km2. In addition to the monitoring program, a new tool, called Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), has also been used to enhance the evaluation of changes. Finally, a groundwater flow model has been developed that successfully simulates and predicts aquifer responses in the mine area and region. The well-calibrated flow model has served as a reliable tool to develop dewatering and mining plans, and project post-closure hydrologic conditions in the region. This paper introduces the BGMI dewatering and water management system and the means used by BGMI to evaluate and anticipate hydrologic responses in the region. The water management and analysis system has been and continues to be an integral part of managing ongoing operations, planning and pricing out future activities and evaluating the long-term effects of mine water handling.

In 2004, Rio Tinto started a major project to implement Mine Monitoring and Control (MMC) systems worldwide. A detailed selection processes was undertaken and migration to a standard system was started. Today systems are operating around the world and serve as the core of to many business processes. Implementations include highly union areas, large mines, centrally managed mines, and remote areas. Each implementation has unique challenges but all are working towards the common goal with common systems. This paper reviews two projects that Rio Tinto has deployed in diverse conditions. The projects are the Rossing Uranium upgrade from the original Wenco system to the common standard and Iron Ore of Canada?s general technology upgrade. Also discussed is the future of mining at Rio Tinto, specifically the drill automation projects, and how it is utilizing the common standard MMC systems.

"Molybdenum is a very important rare mineral resources, which exists largely in oxidized ores and sulphide ores in nature. About 99% of metallic molybdenum comes from molybdenite. The talcose molybdenum resources are abundant but the resources utilization is low, because the talc is naturally hydrophobic and the floatability of talc is similar with molybdenite, which lead to difficult separation by flotation. Talc is easy entry into concentrate in flotation which can cause the content of MgO overhigh, therefore the molybdenum concentrate grade can not meet the industrial requirements. Thus the utilization level of talcose molybdenum resources has been restricted greatly.The adsorption of water on talc and molybdenite surfaces and natural floatability of minerals were studied by density functional theory method. The results showed that molybdenite and talc were layered minerals which exhibited similar surface wettability and H2O molecule prefers to stay with water rather than the minerals surfaces. N2 is adsorbed on talc and molybdenite surfaces more easily than H2O. The interaction and flotation behavior were studied by SEM and flotation experiments. The reason why talc interferes with the flotation molybdenite has been revealed. The agglomeration between molybenite and talc was caused easily in neutral or acidity solution, and it was dispersing between molybenite and talc particles in alkaline solution. The flotation results showed that good floatability of talc was the key factor causing a low grade of concentrate in alkaline solution. Thus, it is the key factor to enlarge floatability difference between molybdenite and talc.INTRODUCTIONMolybdenum is a kind of important rare metal and strategic reserve resources (Zhitao Y et al, 2016a). Due to excellent characteristic, such as high melting point, good thermal property and et al, it’s widely used in metallurgy, machinery, chemical, aerospace, and many other areas. It has become an indispensable metal in modern industry. Molybdenum generally exist in the form of molybdenite which is a kind of mineral with excellent natural floatability. Talc is a kind of typical hydrous and layered magnesium silicate minerals (Beattie D et al,2006a), which is one of the most common gangue mineral of the platinum group metal ores and metal sulfide ores (Tao L et al,2011). Due to its good native floatability, talc is easy entry into the concentrate product with foam in the process of sulfide ore flotation (Kelebek S and Smith S, 2006b), which resulted in decreasing concentrate indexes. Not on that, the high-content MgO of concentrate will also produce a series of adverse impact to the subsequent smelting (Lotter N O et al, 2008). Therefore, it is difficult to separate talc from sulfide ore concentrate effectively."

Neste trabalho, foram obtidas estruturas compósitas constituídas por camadas alternadas de epóxi com mantas de nanofibras de nylon 6. As nanofibras foram produzidas pela técnica de eletrofiação. O comportamento mecânico destas estruturas sob tração e sob impacto pendular IZOD foram estudados. A incorporação das nanofibras na matriz epoxídica permitiu aumentos no módulo de elasticidade (6%), na resistência a tração (7%) e na energia de impacto (2%), ou seja, houveram ganhos de resistência mecânica sem sacrificar a resistência ao impacto, ao contrário do que ocorre na quase totalidade dos micro ou macromateriais modificadores do epóxi.

Introduction Spontaneous combustion in coal mining is recognized as a major hazard in terms of safety and economics. A survey by Olaf (1979) revealed that 80% of coal mine fires were caused by spontaneous combustion. Modern mining methods demand a high capital investment. Closure of a working face may then result in a huge loss. Even a short production interruption can prove expensive. Spontaneous combustion may also produce lethal amounts of carbon monoxide, thus posing a serious threat to the health and safety of underground miners. The worldwide recession in the early 1980s resulted in a number of mine closures and production cutbacks. So large stockpiles at mine sites were common. Experience has shown that stockpile fires are difficult to extinguish. Critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion There is no simple method of predicting whether a particular mining method applied to a specific coal seam will result in spontaneous combustion. Under favorable conditions of heat accumulation, spontaneous combustion can occur with any type of coal. It is known that subbituminous coals are more susceptible compared to low volatility bituminous coals, and that a high ratio of exinite increases the risk. However, the inherent moisture content of the coal and the exposed surface area may be more significant. Actual mining and ventilation conditions also strongly influence susceptibility. In practice, the experience gained with the mining method applied to a particular type of coal seam must be carefully evaluated with respect to the factors responsible for spontaneous combustion. Feng, Chakravorty, and Cochrane (1973) summarized the critical factors influencing spontaneous combustion in coal mines (Table 1). Prevention methods and strategies Mine layout is the most important factor preventing spontaneous heating. Working districts should be designed so that a particular section can be isolated on short notice without affecting production in others. Sites for preparatory seals should be identified and marked during planning. With coal seams that are highly susceptible to spontaneous combustion, the retreat method of working is preferred. This is because the gob is not subjected to a large difference in ventilation pressure. Coal pillars should be designed to resist excessive crush. The panel system of working is preferred, particularly for mining coals susceptible to spontaneous combustion. The size of each panel is calculated based on the incubation period and the rate of extraction. Controlling air leakage is also important for controlling spontaneous combustion. This is usually achieved by minimizing ventilation pressure difference, proper siting of doors, and avoiding unnecessary stopping and starting of fans. Air leakage is also reduced by sealant coating, injection of cements in cracks and crevices, and by maintaining good gateside packs. Application of inhibitors to control spontaneous combustion met with limited success. Chamberlain and Hall (1973) concluded that borate solution or Montan powder sprayed in the gob area or infused into a low rank coal would reduce the possibility of spontaneous combustion. Early detection of heating Significant research is being conducted worldwide to develop methods for early detection of heating. Monitoring combustion products during the early stage of heating is the most suitable method for detecting spontaneous combustion. The major gaseous products resulting from low temperature oxidation of coal are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. In mining operations, carbon dioxide monitoring is considered unsuitable because there are sources other than spontaneous heating from which this gas may originate. This report contains Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 20 samples from5 areas on the arctic slope of Alaska. Two samples were condensates from the South Barrow gasfield, Barrow Lakes area. The remaining 18 samples were crude oils from the following areas: Barrow Lakes, 1 seepage sample; Umiat, 10 well samples; Cape Simpson, 1 seepage sample and 3 well samples; Fish Creek, 2 well samples; and Wolf Creek, I well sample. Table 1 summarizes information on the origin of the crude-oil samples, and table 2 summarizes characteristics of the samples. Item numbers in both tables correspond to item numbers of the analyses at the end of this report, and the samples are referred to by these numbers throughout the text.

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted. Rock bolts are commonly used to reinforce ground in underground mining and civil tunnel environments. Rock bolts serve two main functions: i) they suspend large, loose blocks of ground, and ii) provide a protective pressure arch to restrain the deformation in an excavated void. Automated and precise tracking of rock bolt positions can assist with the operational success of ground support by reducing the amount of labour required in current manual practices. A point cloud is a large list of x, y and z coordinates in three-dimensional space, that when visualised, show a precise 3D representation of a physical environment. Point cloud data can be collected using accurate LiDAR scanners. These scanners can be mounted on a stationary tripod or on a moving vehicle. A key way point cloud data is used is in the bolt detection project being completed in conjunction with UNSW Sydney, which aims to provide an automated location of underground rock bolts from LiDAR scans. The immediate challenge with identifying rock bolts is that they constitute a very small portion of the data set amounting to approximately 0.01 per cent of some of the collected civil tunnel data. The process of detecting rock bolts from point clouds therefore requires a quick elimination of large background data while still preserving the bolt data. A further challenge is that the geometry of underground environments can often be very complex and non-uniform. To overcome these challenges, a two-step coarse to fine deep learning approach is taken. The first step is a coarse background elimination step aimed at removing as much of the background data as possible. The second step is a finer classification method, which uses deep learning to further segment the bolts from the remaining background. Additionally, a computer vision module is being implemented, which is expected to increase the detection rate by adding another dimension to the training data set.

PT Indo Muro Kencana (PT IMK) is a surface gold and silver mine located in Mt. Muro area, Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The mining operations of multiple open pits using combination of excavator and haul truck is operated. This operation is performed in two shifts in a day. The articulated dump truck (ADT) with capacity of 40 t and 60 t deliver ore to the mineral processing plant and discard waste material to the waste dump area. Overall, PT IMK’s mining operation department is consisting of two sections, namely mining operation section and drill and blast section. Firstly, mine operation section is responsible to manage loading, hauling, pit service (mine dewatering, earthwork, road maintenance) and mine operation engineering. Secondly, drill and blast section is in charge to manage drilling and blasting (blast engineering, blasting operation, explosive permit and magazine or explosive storage). Additionally, conventional blasting method (ore-waste blasting) with non-electric initiation system is used and sleep blasting is undertaken as bulk explosive is buried for maximum two days. The first purpose of this paper is to elucidate about role of mining engineer in mining operation department (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer). At this point, mining operation engineering practice (fleet management system, production control and mining manpower management) and also blasting daily practice will be elucidated. Daily blasting practice is consisting of surface blast design, explosive engineering, sleep blast practice and the concept of scaled depth of burial to ensure a safe work environment in blasting activity. Next, the second purpose of this paper is to explore workforce evolution and future skills for mining engineer in surface mining operation. Furthermore, strategy to advance future skills such as mining continuous improvement program, training and skills development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer) in order to develop their skills is also discussed. It is expected that in the future, these future mining leaders will become new mining leader, for instance mining superintendents, D&B superintendents and mining managers. In conclusion, it is clear that awareness about workforce evolution, professional development, training, skills development, mining economics awareness and mining continuous improvement program are essentially required as professional development for mining engineer (mining operation engineer and D&B engineer), in order to be commercially competitive in their future career and in order to be adapted with future workforce evolution in mining.

"A laboratory froth flotation experiment was conducted on a low-grade carbonatite copper ore sample obtained from Phalaborwa in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The sample was a homogenous hydrocyclone overflow which serves as the feed to the flotation cells at Palabora Mining Company (PMC). The sample has an average copper assay of 0.59% with predominant copper-bearing minerals being chalcopyrite, bornite and cubanite. The carbonatite nature of the ore comes from the high content of calcium (28.85%) and magnesium (6.84%) minerals. Collectors used were sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate and potassium ethyl xanthate alongside Senfroth 38 supplied by Senmin. The results showed that at 200 g/t mixture of collectors (50:50), an optimum grade of 8.03% Cu in the rougher flotation concentrate was achieved at 74% recovery, while during the second flotation, 24.65% Cu was obtained at 74.4% recovery using a Senfroth 38 dosage of 6 L/t with 100 g/t mixed (50:50) collectors. The particle size and pH value of the pulp played a significant role in that the mixed collectors performed efficiently at pH above 8.3 and at room temperature while particle sizes greater than 53 µm were well concentrated when compared with those of less than 53 µm. INTRODUCTION The need for copper ore concentration research is on the rise as a result of the depletion of deposits and the advent of low-grade copper ores. Although most copper ore deposits have other valuable minerals that support their economic extraction, the increase in technological innovations as regards copper usage and applications has increased the demand for copper. To create conditions for economic rates of mineral recovery in a deep, hard rock mass, enhancement of naturally occurring permeability is necessary, and may be achieved through explosives detonated in boreholes. Previous theories of explosively created permeability are reviewed and found to relate permeability solely to the degree of fracturing, neglecting porosity. A theory is presented that includes both fracture density and porosity, and its results are applied, together with a knowledge of explosive behavior, to derive design parameters for in-situ mining.

Fengning ilmenite ore is a magnetic deposit in gabbro containing high phosphorus and low titanium, the main minerals in which are ilmenite, magnetite and apatite. The dissemination size of magnetite is so fine that even the percentage of -0.010mm level is up to 36.50%. The fine and vein magnetite are distributed in gangue and ilmenite, so the majority of the magnetite is difficult to be separated from the gangue. Ilmenite is difficult to be recovered by low-intensity magnetic separation even through fine grinding. In high-intensity magnetic separation of ilmenite, the gangue inter-growth with the magnetite and the Fe-containing silicates may be enriched in the concentrate, and the ilmenite of the concentrate will be reduced. Based on the processing mineralogy research, combined gravity-flotation process is suggested to recover the ilmenite. The method is also good to reduce phosphorus in the ilmenite concentrate.

A common problem in the mining industry is that company geologists can operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company (Jones and Moorhead, 2011). This may result in poor knowledge transfer and often priority conflicts with geology, operations and project departments. This problem is amplified by the acquisition of mineralogy capabilities and other metallurgical (met) test work undertaken by many companies in order to solve for complex orebody problems. Met data is often not located and viewed in 3D space so that geologists and engineers can create and work with geometallurgical (geomet) models (Bye, 2006). Visualisation of data in an interactive graphical 3D model provides a bridge enabling met professionals to collaborate with engineers and geologists to provide a common understanding of the relevance of geomet data.In recognition of this problem, Newcrest has undertaken an effective collaboration strategy to improve internal and external engagement through the use of large visualisation displays (Jones, 2009). The displays are underpinned by IT systems and information management practices that recognise the needs of underlying disciplines. Today it is generally understood within Newcrest that this is required to improve decision-making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies has been generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions (IBM, 2008). However, the science and engineering process that are used to structure modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are now known to be simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in disciplines such as geology and mining.CITATION:Jones, J and Moorhead, C, 2013. Lead in environment often causes a serious health hazard. The removal of Pb2+ from aqueous phase is a beneficial project. In this paper, deposited Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S.c.) was chosen as adsorbent, Pb2+ ions as adsorbate, and the process of biosorption was studied. The dynamics of the adsorption was investigated. The adsorption mechanism of Pb2+ by S.c. cells was also investigated by detecting microstructure, zeta potential under different pH value, FT-IR spectra of the S.c. particles before and after biosorption. It was shown that the biosorption of Pb2+ by deposited S. c. is a rapid process, and the adsorbing equilibrium is reached within 10 minutes. The Zero point of zeta potential of S.c. cells is pH=3.3. When 2.0<pH<3.3, there exists biosorption (biosorption rate 76%~88%), which means static bio-sorption been not the only kind of biosorption. FT-IR spectrum analysis showed that groups on bacteria surface were mainly characteristic groups of protein and amylase; oxo-groups and nitric-groups on S.c. cell surface could chelate with heavy metal ions. Chemical adsorption might exist in the process.

This paper applies geostatistical tools in Measure While Drilling (MWD) data to estimate the probability distribution of values in all the points of the studied domain in order to assess the continuity of rock classes between boreholes. The analyses carried out by Ghosh et al. (2018) and Navarro et al. (2019) have been used as starting point of this work to classify the geotechnical rock condition in four classes: solid rock, fractured rock, cave- in rock and cavity. From it, an application for the geotechnical rock condition of orebodies have been developed, aiming at characterizing the rock before the charging the holes to minimize unexpected rock conditions and to address issues associated with charging and blasting operations. Such problems are closely related with non-optimal rock fragmentation after blasting.

The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in -1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys. In the last century&apos;, several widely separated bodies of chromite with some magnetite had been exploited in a &apos;serpentine belt near its contact with schist. At one time this district held a virtual monopoly on the production of chromite. Known ore bodies now are exhausted. Owing to the relatively high specific gravity of chromate compared to normal rocks, a gravitational survey was run to determine which magnetic anomalies were worthy of diamond drilling. Linear feet of trenching totaled 1,710 feet. Ten holes were diamond drilled, which totaled 2,272 feet. The log of the drilling is shown in the text in a tabulation of drill-hole data.
