The Ashanti mine, located in Obusai, Ghana, West Africa, has been in production for over 100 years, and is currently the second largest single gold producer in Africa. The mine covers a concession area of 434 square kilometers with four main ore types: the quartz vein type, disseminated sulphide type, supergene sulphides and transition ore, and granitoids stock works (visible gold and quartz veinlets). Various mining strategies and methods have been employed for the mining of the narrow-vein ore at Ashanti. In recent years, the mine owner: Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. has embarked on a mine-wide expansion program to boost production to a target of one million ounces per annum. With the rapid depletion of its high-grade ore, a suitable mining method was required to produce a high tonnage at low cost to meet production objectives. This paper discusses how the Ashanti mine applied Canada experiences in mining technology to boost production, and the impact that the differing geological settings between the two countries had on the stope performance at the Ashanti operations. Experience developed at the Ashanti mine led to innovative modifications for stope layout and design methods in relatively poor ground conditions.

In order to secure good results in the prevention of accidents, it is generally recognized that the desire for such accomplishment, as well as the aggressive and constructive action to achieve it, must emanate from the Top Management and permeate successively down through the "Chart of Authority" to the workmen. Several years ago, with the above as a basis and with full support of the Top Management, the Mining Department started a program of selling the foremen and bosses the idea that safety could be achieved and that it was desired and required. Using psychology, persistence and numerous other methods, the foremen and bosses were finally impressed with the idea that "It can be done" and "It will be done." With this in mind, new ideas were brought forth by the foremen and bosses regarding the caving operation and the specific jobs in the operation. These new ideas were taken up in round-table discussions and resulted in certain changes in the undercutting method and the actual drawing of the blocks. These changes resulted in increasing fragmentation of the blocks which prevented the usual hang-up areas in the blocks. With the rock smaller in size and within reasonable reach from the tapping drifts, accidents were prevented in the tapping section. At the same time, an enforced campaign of housekeeping throughout the mine was undertaken with very beneficial results. The foremen and bosses then, in turn, educated and trained the workers themselves to become safely conscious. In so doing, a constant re- minder was given on all jobs assigned that the job was to be done safely as well as efficiently. No man is assigned a job who is not qualified for the type of work required. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand.

For over a century, the Sunshine Mine in Idaho has been a major producer of silver. An estimated 335,000,000 troy ounces of silver has been mined. This has established the Sunshine Mine as the largest single source of silver in the world. Because the dominant silver containing mineral is tetrahedrite, a copper and antimony sulfide, normal metallurgical treatments to recover the precious metal are not practical. Thus, over the course of the company's history, novel, hydrometallurgical technologies have been developed on-site to handle complex, precious metal containing materials. Recently, the use of Sunshine technology has been extended to the recycle of secondary materials. As well, the use of Sunshine technology by other organizations for treatment of both primary and secondary feedstocks containing precious and base metals is an area of growing interest. This paper will provide an overview of Sunshine hydrometallurgical technologies including the applicability of Sunshine technology to the recycling of precious and base metals.

A proposed method of drilling utilizes sequential detonation of two types of explosive charges delivered to the hole by a conventional drilling fluid through pipe. A shaped charge first produces a long thin hole. A second charge, called a gauging charge, is pumped into the thin hole, explodes, and enlarges it to full gauge. In one suggested configuration, the explosives are contained in cylindrical capsules 4- to 5-ft long. A drilling head is positioned 2- to 3-ft off bottom. When a capsule is pumped to the bottom of the hole and stops, pressure inside the drill pipe increases and differential pressure detonates the explosive. Primacord along the length of the capsule disintegrates the capsule. The debris circulates out of the hole with the drilling fluid. The gauging-charge action was examined using 2-ft cubes of Berea sandstone. The sandstone (18 per cent porosity) was vacuum-saturated with water and surrounded by concrete. To prevent reflected tensile pulses, the acoustical impedance of the concrete matched that of the sandstone. A 750-psig pressure was applied to a drilling fluid within a shaped-charge-formed hole before detonating the gauging charge. In these tests, 190 gm of rock were removed for each gram of explosive detonated. A similar series of experiments on low-porosity (0.40 per cent) metamorphic limestone provided a more rigorous test. Extensive fracturing from the gauging-charge action prevented an estimate of the volume of the expanded hole. The diameter of the hole was irregular, ranging from about 2 to 4 in, or about fivefold larger than the hole created by the shaped charge. INTRODUCTION In the past, explosives have found a varied but somewhat limited use in the oil field. An early well stimulation technique, still in use today, in vo lves shooting ni troglycerin to en large the borehole and to increase matrix permeability near the wellbore. Bullets and jets are now the conventional method of perforating casing and tubing. Detonations are frequently used to "back off" or "shoot off" stuck pipe and, of course, seismo-graphic work has long depended on explosive-generated pulses to find attractive earth structures. Efforts to use explosives in drilling operations have received limited examinations1-3 which, in one respect, is surprising because explosives offer one way to transmit large amounts of energy directly to the bottom of the hole. Recently, Ostrovskii l described a Russian method of drilling with explosives that utilizes small capsules containing explosives which are pumped into the mud stream to the bottom of a borehole. As the capsules leave the end of the drill pipe, a detonation mechanism is armed. Impact detonates the explosive. In another configuration, two liquids (an oxidizing agent and fuel) in the capsule are separated by a frangible membrane. Separately, the liquids are nonexplosive. Near the bottom of the drill pipe, the capsule passes through a narrow constriction which ruptures the membrane. The mixing of the liquids produces an explosive. Impact is again used to detonate the explosive. About the time Ostrovskii was developing his method, Humble Oil & Refining Co. was independently doing research on another explosive drilling concept based on the sequential detonation of two types -of explosive charges. The proposed technique consisted of alternately pumping a shaped charge and then a "gauging charge" down a well. The shaped charge should drill a long, tapered hole, and the gauging charge should expand it to full gauge. This paper presents the visualized drilling concept and gives results of laboratory work which showed that sequential firing of charges can form hole at an attractive charge-to-rock removal ratio. An important finding was that increased environmental pressure, which is to be expected in wells, increases rock removal efficiency of the gauging charge.

Conventionally low carbon ferromanganese is manufactured globally by refining high carbon ferromanganese in liquid state. This process is an expensive and lengthy technique. Hence, the present work was undertaken with the objective of understanding the feasibility and kinetics of the solid state refining of ferromanganese. The process involved transformation of carbon rich carbides viz. Mn3C2, Mn7C3 into metal rich carbide i.e. Mn15C4, Mn23C6 by subjecting the alloy powder to a flowing stream of carbon dioxide. Effect of the process governing parameters such as time, temperature, particle size, pressure on the extent of decarburization was studied. Without any loss of manganese in the form of fumes or slag, it was observed that, there was substantial reduction, viz. 65 per cent in the total carbon content, by this technique. Subsequently, the process was investigated to find out the mechanism of carbon removal. Depending upon the temperature and the particle size, it was found that the rate controlling mechanism changes from chemical reaction control to product layer (ash) diffusion control. The activation energy for each of the aforesaid mechanism was computed. The values thus obtained substantiated the aforesaid mechanisms.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1300 tpd by October 1, 1964. Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1400 tpd and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1100 tpd due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January 1968, was mainly massive sulfides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, Copper, zinc, and minor amounts of lead sulfides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (average specific gravity of 3-8). From January 1968 until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulfide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite with some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. THE ceramic group of industries is comprised of those engaged in the manufacture of cement, glass, artificial abrasives, whiteware, including earthenware, stoneware, porcelain tableware, porcelain sanitary ware, electrical porcelain, floor and wall tile, porcelain enamel on metals, refractories of all kinds, sewer-pipe and structural clay products, such as terra cotta, brick, and hollow tile. The various sub-divisions of the industry produce a wide range of articles on which we depend for our creature comforts from day to day, perhaps to a greater extent than we generally realize. The industry, in turn, depends on a great number of minerals, and chemical products derived from minerals, and it is the object of this brief paper to present a list of these with notes indicating the particular applications. In order to bring home the importance of the industry to your daily life, stop and consider the many things around you accepted as a matter of course. Cement provides the smooth surfaces of many of our highways, city streets, and sidewalks. It enters into nearly all types of construction, alone or in combination with other clay products. Glass we hardly appreciate because we can see through it so easily, but it is there to serve us in windows, doors, and other light-transmitting structures. Glass is the universal means of transporting liquids and beverages, our beverages are usually served in it, and, with the recent development in fine spun glass textiles, there is a possibility of glass clothing in the future. Chinaware, a general term for table dishes, may be earthenware (not vitrified), semi-porcelain, or bone china, but it is before us three or more times a day ?and we seldom think of the minerals that have made these products possible. Floor tile, wall tile, and other ceramic specialties for interior and exterior use and decoration please the eye and provide sanitary surroundings.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) can be used to monitor electrostatic charges on the surfaces of materials. In this paper, we describe the use of KPFM to evaluate the electrostatic effect induced by silver nanoparticles incorporated as clusters in diamond-like carbon (DLC) films, before and after scratching. The results are compared to those obtained for DLC films without silver nanoparticles. Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the DLC signature, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to confirm the presence of silver in the film. The morphology of the DLC film containing silver was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The findings suggest that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in amorphous materials could offer new options for electrostatic energy storage on the surfaces of these materials.

The mine of the Miami Copper Co. is in the Miami district, Gila County, Ariz., approximately 7 miles west of Globe. In 1906, the General Development Co. secured the ground now owned by the Miami Copper Co., and about a year later discovered ore in a prospect shaft at a depth of 220 ft. The Miami Copper Co. was organized in 1907, the claims held by the General Development Co. were transferred to it, and an active development campaign was inaugurated. The railroad was extended from Globe to Miami in 1909, a concentrating plant was constructed, and the company began producing early in 1911. The unit size of mineral tract in the district is the standard lode claim 600 ft. in width by 1500 ft. in length. Ownerships of land are held in fee. The geology of the district has been described by F. L. Ransome.' The formations of local importance are: The pre-Cambrian Pinal schist, which consists mainly of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks and is commonly of a thinly laminated sericitic variety; the diabase, which is thought to have been intruded in late Paleozoic or early Mesozoic times; the Schultze granite and granite porphyry, considered early Tertiary; the dacite of late Tertiary time; and the Gila conglomerate of early Quaternary. General Items Influencing Mining Methods The bodies of disseminated ore in the district are flat lying masses of irregular outline and variable thickness. As a rule, these masses lack definite boundaries; the orebody follows a curve along one of the main ridges, approximately 5500 ft. in length with a maximum width of 1600 ft. The minerals occur as finely divided and uniformly disseminated chal-cocite in the Pinal schist and Schultze granite. The typical overburden or capping is a barren rusty brown, very friable, highly siliceous, leached schist, or granite-porphyry. The topography of the district is fairly rugged and irregular; the altitude ranges from 3400 ft. above sea level, at the town of Miami, to 3900 ft. on the hills above the Miami orebody. The climate is mild; the mean annual temperature is 63.°F.

Bacteriophage (phage) are viruses that infect bacteria. Protein coatings on the surface of the phage particle can be genetically engineered so that they bind to inorganic molecules. The filamentous phage particle is about 930 nanometres in length and 6.5 nanometres in diameter and consists of a single-stranded molecule of DNA surrounded by five different coat protein molecules denoted P3, P6, P7, P8 and P9. Peptide sequences in the P3 coat protein that bind to sphalerite and chalcopyrite have been identified. The binding is selective; phage with specific P3 peptide sequences bind to minerals but do not bind to silica or to pyrite. Two peptide sequences in the P8 coat protein that bind selectively to chalcopyrite and pyrite have also been identified. The amino acids in the P8 binding sequences are hydrophilic and thus a coating of a mineral particle with phage having these peptide sequences may render the particle hydrophilic. Experiments are underway to confirm this. Phage are relatively easy to grow and are not living organisms requiring an energy source to maintain life. Phage can also tolerate a range of pH and temperatures. Given this, and the ability to indentify phage coat proteins that bind selectively to a variety of inorganic molecules, phage have the potential to be useful tools in mineral processing and waste treatment.

The subsurface investigation for the Reach 4 Tunnel was expected to be completed in a single phase. This assumed that data from two nearby previous tunnels, combined with limited new subsurface information and surface mapping would be sufficient to characterize the rock behavior. Unforeseen rock conditions and complex faulting led to the recommendation for a second phase. This decision was not reached easily, as much of the follow-on work required helicopter support, and associated costs. The second phase of drilling found significantly more variability than the first phase and led to a very different and better understanding of the geologic and geotechnical conditions, and rock characterization.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong Operational Readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.The road blocks encountered are often from systems that one assumes will operate without trouble such as air-conditioning, or design assumptions that were taken years earlier in feasibility process stages, namely the capacity of existing systems that will connect the new plant to the existing facilities. The challenges associated with rectifying these issues in addition to the requirements to properly start-up and operate a new plant without impacting production are great, and it is imperative to have the necessary resources to react quickly to any problems.IntroductionCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary by-product of the process."

An optical and electron microscope study was made on a commercial 302 stainless steel heat treated for massive carbide precipitation. Convincirg evidence was obtained that the grain boundary precipitate does not grow away from the grain boundary into the matrix, but grows as a network of large thin dendrites in between the grains. IN austenitic stainless steels the carbon in supersaturated solution precipitates when the steel is heated in the temperature range 450" to 1000°C. During such heat treatments the chromium-rich carbide occurs primarily at the grain boundaries and has adverse effects on the corrosion resistance and low-temperature ductility of the material. It has been shown that the morphology of the precipitated particles differs widely depending on the time and temperature of the heat treatment, the nature of the boundary, the misfit between the grains, and so forth.1"5 It was assumed by Mahla et al.,' Streicher,' and Mc Nutt' that the carbide particles which nucleate in the grain boundary grow in various geometric or dendritic forms away from the boundary into the matrix. However, Kinzel,' Hatwell et a, and Plateau et aL4 found that the particles nucleate in the grain boundary and grow as a network of thin dendrites in the grain boundary interface. We have made a comprehensive studyg of the precipitation occurring in a commercial 302 austenitic stainless steel heat treated for times ranging from 0.15 to 1500 hr at various temperatures from 480" to 1065"~. This study was made to elucidate the influence of heat treatments on both the mechanical and the corrosion properties of this steel. Part of this investigation which is pertinent to the morphology of the grain boundary carbides referred to above is separately reported here. We found that the particles which nucleated in the boundaries grew in the interface of these boundaries, thus supporting the viewpoints of Kinzel,' Hatwell et al.,3 and Plateau et al.4 Furthermore, when carbide particles nucleated in the matrix very close to the boundaries, they possessed a morphology distinctively different from the particles growing in the grain boundaries. MATERIAL A study of metallographic samples and of fracture surfaces of a 302 stainless steel is reported in this paper. The composition and heat treatments are listed in Table I. Polished and etched samples were examined und813r the optical microscope, and carbon extraction replicas of etched micrographic samples and various fracture surfaces3'8'9 were examined under the electron microscope. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A representative optical micrograph of the 302 steel, condition A, is shown in Fig. l(a). Particles can be seen on the grain boundaries but no traces can be found of particles which grow from the grain boundaries into the matrix. A carbon extraction replica of this sample shows numerous large thin dendrites, Fig. l(b). The lateral dimension of such carbide particles vary up to 100 p, and their thickness estimated from the amoun! of electron penetration i:; between 500 and 1000A. Such large dendrites are extracted from almost all grain boundaries and, if they had grown into the grains, they would definitely be revealed by etching traces in the matrix, Fig. l(a). The reason why these large dendrites on the extraction replica appear to be grown into the grain is due to the mechanism of the extraction replica process. Thus, these dendrites are supported by the carbon replica film only at the edges originally along the grain boundary trace A-A, Fig. l(b), in the polished metal section and have subsequently fallen over onto the carbon replica film during handling. Although such dendrites generally fall only to one particular side of the grain boundary trace, one finds occasionally that parts of a dendrite have fallen to both sides, as shown in Fig. l(b). Further evidence for the growth of carbide in the grain boundary can be obtained from the appearance of fracture surfaces. This phenomenon has been pronounced in thick, highly permeable sand formations such as those of the wilcox zone in Oklahoma City. This observation has prompted considerable research directed toward the semiquantitative determination of the equilibrium saturation distribution of oil vertically throughout a formation at final depletion. In this paper, data are also presented showing the transient distribution of liquid at different stages of the depletion period. Other experimental results show the effect of temperature on the drainage rates of water, Wilcox crude oil, and a close-cut heptane fraction. Intermittent drainage of liquid produced saturation gradients that might well be expected from the flow theories involved, Yields of the various liquids varied from 50 to 75 per cent of the original fluid content of the sand-packed (4 in. by 8 ft.) vertical tube. Introduction In certain volumetric Oil fields the performance of the reservoir during the latter part Of its producing life is governed to a large extent by the downward movement of liquid due to the force of gravity. This is especially true of formations having thick or tilting beds of uniformly high permeability, free of shale breaks. Laverett4 and Katz3 have presented original data and discussed the theory relating to the capillary and gravitational forces acting On liquids contained in a sand body. These investigators have pointed out the importance of such studies in the estimation of future reserves as well as the original fluid content of a reservoir. In this previous work, no data have been reported showing the history of saturation distributions during the drainage period. Since a knowledge Of these transients is helpful in obtaining crude Oil from such a reservoir, the authors have obtained these data during this investigation. Experimental Apparatus The drainage tests were carried out in two vertical tubes, 8 ft. high and consisting of 2-in. and 4-in. standard wrought-iron pipe, respectively. Each tube was equipped with a water jacket, which could be kept virtually isothermal ( ± 1.0ºF.). A diagrammatic sketch of the 4-in. tube and its auxiliaries is shown in Fig. 1. At 6 in. above the base of the tube, and at every foot above this point, core nipples were inserted through the water jacket. These nipples were closely fitted with steel-plug inserts during each drainage run. At the end of the run, these inserts were removed so that cores could be obtained from the sand-packed tube.

This is especially true of formations having thick or tilting beds of uniformly high permeability, free of shale breaks. Laverett4 and Katz3 have presented original data and discussed the theory relating to the capillary and gravitational forces acting On liquids contained in a sand body. These investigators have pointed out the importance of such studies in the estimation of future reserves as well as the original fluid content of a reservoir. In this previous work, no data have been reported showing the history of saturation distributions during the drainage period. Since a knowledge Of these transients is helpful in obtaining crude Oil from such a reservoir, the authors have obtained these data during this investigation. Experimental Apparatus The drainage tests were carried out in two vertical tubes, 8 ft. high and consisting of 2-in. and 4-in. standard wrought-iron pipe, respectively. Each tube was equipped with a water jacket, which could be kept virtually isothermal ( ± 1.0ºF.). A diagrammatic sketch of the 4-in. tube and its auxiliaries is shown in Fig. 1. At 6 in. above the base of the tube, and at every foot above this point, core nipples were inserted through the water jacket. These nipples were closely fitted with steel-plug inserts during each drainage run. At the end of the run, these inserts were removed so that cores could be obtained from the sand-packed tube.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mime in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters--cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.
