Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. Evaluations were made on former block caving mines at PT Freeport Indonesia (IOZ, GBT Area I and II) in order to design a more appropriate support system. As a permanent support, the thread bar bolt support system is widely used in the DOZ mine. The advantages of this system are ease of operation, quality control and high bond strength. The main problem of this system is the curing time of about 28 days to achieve maximum strength, necessitating the installation of a temporary support for its implementation. In this instance, the system was inefficient in operation and studies were required to find an alternative grouting system. This paper examines the evaluation of thread bar bolt support system and compares the performance of two types of grouting (resin cartridge and cement cartridge) with cement grouting performance. The evaluation is conducted with a pull out test. The advantages and disadvantages for each grouting method, comparison of cost estimation and grouting application in mine scale are presented in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines recently investigated dust generation and methane liberation during half-and full-web cutting at a double-drum shearer longwall face. This study was conducted to ascertain the health and safety aspects of wider web shearing at longwalls. Results from these underground tests showed that deeper web cutting reduced dust generation and methane liberation per ton of coal mined, while significantly improving shearer production rates. When cutting with the airflow (head-to-tail cut pass) full-web cutting decreased dust generation per ton by 16 pct at the shearer and 6 pct at the tailgate, with an increase in shearer production rate of 72 pct. Methane liberation per short ton also deere~sed by 36 pet at the shearer and 22 pct at the tailgate. Full-web cutting against the airflow (tail-to-head cut pass) decreased dust generation per ton by 41 pct at the shearer and 37 pct at the tail-gate over half-web cutting, with an increase in shearer production rate of 61 pct. Methane liberation per ton also decreased by 35 pct at the shearer and 41 pct at the tailgate. These improvements for full-web cutting are a reflection of improved cutting efficiency (less dust and methane produced from cutting) and less new face area exposed per ton of coal mined (less methane liberated from face per short ton of coal mined).

"Design standards" tend to create differences between countries while fostering uniformity among products of competing manufacturers. "Performance requirements," on the other hand, tend to eliminate differences between countries while encouraging competitive development of better products. Examples of regulations from the U.S., Canada. Great Britain. Australia. South Africa, etc., are used to illustrate differences in the design and certification of diesel equipment for underground coal mines.

"In 2005, Messer Group established a technology competence centre for metallurgy in Gumpoldskirchen (Austria), with the aim to develop oxygen burners which satisfy today's and upcoming standards of legislation as well as customer requirements. With the assistance of the Development Sponsorship Fund (FFF) of Austria, cooperation with the University of Leoben was agreed on. With the long term experience of the Gas-Warme-Institut ""GWI"" in Essen (Germany) and the University of Leoben, different new burners have been developed.The efficiency of industrial combustion processes can be increased in two ways (which can be seen in Figure 1 ), either by preheating the fuel and combustion air or by adding oxygen. Due to the high 79 % Nz ballast in air combustion, only low flame temperatures can be reached. This results in high heat loss in the exhaust gas, caused by the low combustion efficiency. Oxygen can be introduced into the combustion chamber using different techniques:• Oxygen fuel burners• Direct oxygen injection into the fuel air flame• Underlaying of the fuel air flame• Enrichment of the combustion airIn Figure 2, the theoretical flame temperature for the stoichiometrical combustion of natural gas is plotted as a function of oxygen enrichment. Therefore, it can be concluded that even low enrichment values produce higher flame temperatures and result in higher combustion efficiency."

Rare earth element (REE) data are reported for ores, sul?de-bearing rocks and host rocks from massive sul?de deposits and barren sul?de facies iron formations in Proterozoic volcanic rocks of the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, Manitoba. Some of the rare earth elements (e.g., Eu), are selectively leached in zones of intense alteration and redeposited together with the sul?des and silicatesin the uppermost parts of the alteration zones and at the rock-water interface. Chondrite normalized REE pro?les of layered sul?de ores and exhalites proximal to the deposits typically have positive europium anomalies and are enriched in light REE. In contrast, barren sul?de facies iron formations exhibit negative or ‘normal’ Eu pro?les. REE data are useful to explorationists in determining the presence of ‘off-hole’ metal-bearing sul?de zones, in distinguishing metal-poor sul?dic layers related to ‘economic’ hydrothermal activity from barren sul?de facies iron formation and in some instances as a means of establishing ‘ore-equivalent’ strata.

The objective of this study was to assess the health and environmental impacts of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) of coal, specifically as applied to baseload generation of electrical energy by utilities. The study* was a short-term effort that based its analyses on information derived from the experience of the group or quickly obtained from the literature. The approach was to compare Atmospheric Fluidized-Bed Combustion (AFBC) and Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion (PFBC) with two current technologies: low-sulfur coal combustion (LSC) and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) used with high-sulfur coals. A wet-limestone process was selected as the FGD technology. The impacts compared involved not only health and environment but also sociology, resource use, and dollar cost. Conditions for comparison were centered around a nominal date of 1988, when initial operation of commercial AFBC plants may occur. The PFBC has a later introductory date, a nominal 1995 (its impacts relative to other competitive technologies now in the R&D stages were not compared.)

Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property. "An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an Intensive Leach Reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in Dec 2007.There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every 10% of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1% to 1% additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall 4% gain in plant recovery.With total gold recovery of 12% in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600g/t in the concentrator feed to the in-line reactor. The recovery of gold in the in-line reactor is in excess of 98.5%.This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory testwork prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefits of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulphides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONBesides picking nuggets off the ground or out of riverbeds, gravity concentration is arguably one of the oldest methods of recovering gold. In circa 6000BC people discovered that gold can be found behind the rocks and in depressions of creek beds. By placing rocks in a stretch of channel with the proper slope the first sluice is built, probably around 4,000 BC, and this method is still practiced today."

"In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The object of the engineering study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the tonnage hoisted from the No. 1 Shaft complex by adding a service cage compartment and service hoist. This would permit utilization of the existing hoisting plant solely for production hoi sting. The main operation of obtaining zinc from sulfide raw materials by hydrometallurgical technologies is the oxidation roasting of zinc concentrates in fluidized bed furnaces. The technical-economic parameters are determined by the parameters of the roasting process, which depend on the composition of the initial raw materials, the temperature of the bed and on other factors. The predetermined roasting temperature is maintained due to the change of specific efficiency as well as to the quantity of the heat removed from the bed. The efficiency of caissons depends at a high degree on the composition and the thickness of the accretion formed on the surface of the caissons. Forecasting the roasting results is impossible unless we know the mechanism of the accretion formation. The aim of the present paper is the thermodynamic analyses of the behavior of the charge compositions under roasting and the determination of the potential mechanism of the accretion formation. The thermodynamic analyses show that under conditions of the oxidation roasting the thermodynamic probability of the formation of zinc sulfate is higher than the probability of the oxide formation until a temperature of873 OK is reached. The thermodynamic probability of the formation of the lead sulfate is higher than the probability of oxide formation in the entire temperature range of roasting. The probability of formation of ferrites and silicates of zinc decreases only insignificantly the sulfate stability. The results of the investigation of the accretions composItion formed under roasting of concentrates with particle sizes less than 0.02 J..lm (60%), containing 65% of sphalerite (ZnS), 12% of pyrite and chalcopyrite (FeS2 and CufeSz) each, 3% of galenite (PbS), 7% of silica and other non-ore minerals, have shown that the composition of accretion varies depending on the depth of the accretion layer. The accretions on the caissons and the thermo-siphons consist mostly of zinc sulfate (more than 50%). The accretions of forehamber consist mostly of zinc oxide. They also contain ferrites and silicates. The formation of the sulfate zinc accretion in the cold parts of the fluidized bed furnace (the caissons and thermo-siphons) may be explained by a lower temperature on the surface and probably by a catalytic influence of the present oxides in the formation of S02 and sulfates. The nature of the structure of the accretion in the hotter parts of the furnace may supposedly be explained by the formation of elemental vaporous zinc during roasting.

Storing natural gas in solution mined salt cavities appears to be one of the more promising methods being considered by some major gas transmission companies for meeting peak demands. Historically, these companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's position was further complicated because some of its offshore Gulf Coast gas supply wells may have to be shut in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution was to construct. solution mined salt storage caverns adjacent to its pipeline near Eminence, Mississippi. (See Figure 1.) In 1965, Fenix & Scisson, Inc., was engaged by Transco to evaluate the feasibility of storing natural gas in caverns dissolved from salt at selected locations along Transco's pipeline to the East Coast. In June of that year a report was submitted to Transco concluding that this proposal was feasible and recommending several potential sites for storage development. Additional engineering and geological studies followed and in March 1968 the Eminence Salt Dome site was selected and storage construction began that year.

The Bureau of Mines devised a procedure for selectively extracting platinum-group metals (PGM) and gold from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrate. The Stillwater Complex is the only major U.S. PGM resource. Development of a suitable extraction technique will contribute to its exploitation. The concentrate was roasted at 1,050° C to convert host base-metal sulfides to oxides and the PGM from sulfide minerals to their elemental states. The roasted concentrate was preleached with dilute sulfuric acid to remove easily soluble gangue minerals. After pre-leaching, the concentrate was slurried with 6M HCI and leached at ambient temperature and pressure with a strong-oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid, and a persulfate salt were the oxidants investigated. The two-stage leaching scheme ex-tracted up to 97 pct of the platinum, 92 pct of the palladium, and 99 pct of the gold from the roasted concentrate. The base metals were not solubilized and reported to the residue. No attempt was made to devise a procedure to recover the copper and nickel because they comprise less than 5 pct of the value of the concentrate. Viable techniques for recovering the precious metals from the pregnant solution were sulfide precipitation, cementation with nickel, or adsorption on activated carbon.

Two instruments have been constructed that extend microseismic data collection and processing capability for Bureau of Mines research in rock burst, coal bounce and outburst, and roof fall monitoring. The first instrument is a 13-channel tape-triggering system. This system allows better utilization of instrumentation tape recorders by collecting data digitally, turning the tape on only when valid data are present, and increasing the dynamic range of the recorder by using digital data. A digital-to-analog converter is used to provide analog output of the recorded digital data. The instrument records a much larger time slice of transient events than do current commercial devices. The second instrument is a microseismic energy measurement device. This device uses recent developments In integrated circuits to overcome the dynamic range and accuracy limitations of previous instruments. The analog signal is converted to a digital one, and then high-speed multiplication techniques are used to square the amplitude value in real time and integrate it.

THE prospecter and geologist in the field, in the search for gold, are very often faced with a real difficulty. The: mineralized rock _frequently contains gold which is so finely divided or associated with sulphides that it is not recognizable in the gold pan. In recent years, the practice has been to take samples, send them to an assay office, and sit down and wait for results. This paper describes a method of solving the difficulty of proving the presence of this fine gold. The investigation is still in an experimental stage; but certain results have been obtained which would seem to justify publication. We do not consider that the method outlined is quantitative, but we believe that qualitative results are assured. The procedure has the great merit of simplicity. A sample of approximately two pounds of the mineralized rock should be taken and powdered as fine as is practicable. This powder is theo panned and the heavy minerals concentrated. Approximately two grams of these concentrates are taken for the test (one gram can be roughly gauged in the field by heaping up the powder on a Canadian twenty-five cent piece). The material is placed in a test-tube and 6 c.c. of a 10 per cent solution of iodine in alcohol are added (one-third of a test-tube full is approximately equal to 6 c.c.). Heat gently for about ten minutes over a spirit lamp, but without actual boiling. Allow to stand undisturbed until the sediment has settled to the bottom. Remove the clear iodine solution with an eye dropper. Allow it to fall, drop after drop, on a warmed pyrex watch-glass (the drops should be of equal size), taking care that the successive drops fall in the same place and that each drop evaporates before the next drop falls. Heat is applied to the lower side of the watch-glass by means of a spirit lamp. If gold is present in amounts of $2.00 or more per ton, a gold mirror will be formed on the watch-glass. This process of dropping and evaporating should be continued until no clear solution remains. If no mirror has appeared when all the solution has been used, another 6 c.c. of the iodine solution should be added to the powder and the process repeated. The absence of a mirror after the double treatment denotes an amount of gold less than two dollars per ton at the present price, or that the ore contains no gold. The mirror obtained must be washed with nitric acid ( 1: 1) to remove any copper, silver, lead, zinc, and iron. The yellow mirror remaining is pure gold.

The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and model based 3-D control of work machines have increased a lot in new road construction in Finland as well as in other Nordic Countries. Up today, much less attention has been paid into the development of maintenance and rehabilitation processes. As a part of a large research and development program RYM PRE Infra FIN BIM in Finland, a focused research project of the BIM with experiments in total five (5) pilot projects has been performed. A main idea of the new BIM based process has been to utilize mobile laser scanning method for initial data acquirement, the use of novel 3-D analyze and modelling methods for point cloud processing, the use of new type optimization method for the planning of geometric and structural improvements needed for the existing uneven road surfaces, and further, through the creation of 3-D machine control models apply the newest 3- D machine control systems for continuous 3-D control of practical construction work using milling machine and asphalt paver. Finally, an evaluation is made between the new process model and the traditional way of working.

Mine planning processes are continuously evolving, increasing in complexity, and are required to be developed in shorter timeframes, often missing important steps in the process. Underground coal mines are also moving into more challenging environments, with the more favourable resources having been exhausted. In addition to traditional mine planning processes there is an increasing level of complexities associated with parallel systems including the preparation of Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant estimates (JORC, 2012 and Guidelines Review Committee, 2014) or seeking critical regulatory development consent to undertake mining. There is a clear link between geotechnical considerations and success of mining operations, and therefore it is essential that such considerations are elevated in both status and priority. It is obvious that geotechnical considerations are paramount in any mine, however it is imperative to accept that such considerations, and the collection of information relating to such, are undertaken from the onset of any mining project. The present study highlights the planning and design aspects of a well-known openpit copper deposit in India. The mine has been operational since 1982 and presently reaches a depth of 168 m below the surface. The present planning effort has been given due consideration in view of the recent upsurge of copper prices in the global market. The prime focus of the study has been directed towards examining the possible extent of final pit beyond the current pit outline and generating an extraction sequence of future mining operations. To this end, an orebody model of the deposit has been developed and the optimized pit has been derived using L-G 3D algorithm. A sensitivity analysis has also been performed to scrutinize the possible effects of the changing economic scenarios on the ultimate pit configuration. It has been observed that with the current production rate, mine life can be extended another 40 years. With a five-year production plan, these materials can be extracted in eight push-back schemes. The extraction sequence of these push-backs has been outlined in this paper.

Recycling has become an important part of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) life cycle due to the growing demand for energy storage in applications like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Recycling spent LIBs provides a secondary source for strategically scarce metals, like lithium and cobalt, helping to reduce the environmental impact of LIBs. Organic acids have been proven to be effective lixiviants with the benefit of reduced environmental impacts, amongst which citric acid has shown to exhibit similar extraction performance when compared to mineral acids. Leaching LCO and NMC batteries with 1.5M citric acid and 2 vol.% H2O2 at 95°C, 20 g/L for 20 minutes achieved 93% Al, 90% Co, 96% Li, 94% Mn and 94% Ni dissolution. The strong chelating property of citric acid affects the separation of the metals, providing unique extraction opportunities. The first extraction uses 12 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH of 2.5 and O/A ratio of 2 to separate 96.4% Mn and 100% Al from the PLS in two counter-current stages. Stripping the loaded organic with 1.25M citric acid at an A/O ratio of 3 allows for up to 91% stripping of the manganese in a single stage. The second extraction then separates 96.5% Li from the PLS in three counter-current stages using 20 vol.% D2EHPA at a pH 5.5 and O/A ratio of 5. The raffinate remaining after the second separation contains 48.4 wt.% Co and 50.3 wt.% Ni. Keywords: Hydrometallurgy, lithium-ion batteries, metal recycling, citric acid, solvent extraction
