Accurately modeling and predicting long term mill throughput is one of the challenges facing metallurgists, geologists and mine engineers in their quest to consistently deliver accurate life of mine business plans. Batu Hijau has systematically improved long and short term mill throughput predictions since feasibility and commissioning in 1999. This has been achieved through a combination of ongoing improvement to the geology ore hardness and grade characterisation model, drill and blast optimisation and, by application of these data to model mill throughput. Batu Hijau has demonstrated the ability to consistently estimate long term mill throughput within ±2% accuracy. Aside from reliably predicting expected production rates with the existing plant configuration, this predictive ability provides a solid foundation for identifying operating and design criteria for short term grinding circuit optimisation and future expansions. This paper discusses ongoing throughput prediction model development at Batu Hijau based on geo-metallurgical characterisation. Also discussed are tools used for day to day production performance management. This includes on line "Mine to Mill" variable monitoring to improve operations parameter ecision making and performance assessment.

"Mass stabilization (MS) is a ground improvement technique that can prepare areas of low bearing strength soil for subsequent infrastructure development. The technique involves mixing binding agents such as portland cement, fly ash, slag, or lime into the subject soil while the soil remains in-place (insitu). The binders “cement” the soil grains together to form a cement modified soil or a soil cement. The MS-treated area now has improved bearing capacity to support infrastructure or to prevent movement of the material such as landslides.The same insitu soil mixing technique can be used to address contaminated areas. Binders or reagents are mixed into soil. The treatment protects human health and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within the treated material. When used for the purpose of environmental remediation the technology is called Insitu Solidification/Stabilization (ISS).Both Mass Stabilization and ISS treatments require laboratory studies to develop a mix design of soil and binder(s) that produce the desired physical and/or chemical properties. The mix design is then transferred into the field. Successful MS and ISS treatments rely on reproduction at full-scale of the mix design and the thorough mixing attained at laboratory scale. Fifty to 70% of the cost of a MS or ISS project is in the cost of the binding agent that is to be mixed into the subject soil. Under-dosing, overdosing, non-thorough mixing, and mixing in the wrong areas all create cost over-runs.This paper will discuss recent innovations in mass stabilization systems that improve the cost effectiveness of the treatment technology. Specialized equipment can impart greater mixing shear thus improving the thoroughness of mixing. Dry powder pressure feeders can conserve the “drying capacity” of binder resulting in higher strengths at lower binder dosages. Global Positioning System (GPS)-based systems can guide the mixing operator for complete mixing coverage. An integrated tracking and feeding system can record that proper dosing and mixing was accomplished and generate construction QA/QC reports for the client.INTRODUCTIONNew or expanding infrastructure projects may encounter areas of low bearing capacity soil or areas where marginal materials such as waste, dredged material, or sediment have been placed. Mass stabilization is a geotechnical method that can be used to improve the bearing capacity or stiffness of soil. Mass stabilization involves mixing binding agents into soil subject to treatment while the soil remains in-place or insitu.Mass stabilization technique can also address contaminated soil therefore, the same technique can be used to attain both civil and environmental engineering goals. In this environmental application the technology is known as insitu solidification/stabilization (ISS). [Several processes for recovering manganese from low-grade ores have been proposed3/4/5/ in which an aqueous slurry of the ore is leached with gas containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur dioxide as obtained from burning sulfur or roasting sulfide ores. The manganese dioxide is dissolved, and most of the sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfate, but an appreciable quantity of dithionate is usually formed, together with acid from oxidation of the sulfur dioxide. To improve the sulfur-rejection capability of a coal-cleaning plant, it is first necessary to evaluate the performance of the existing circuit. This information can then be used to decide whether there would be significant benefits from improving the operation and control of the existing circuit, or whether further improvements would require more radical process changes. This paper describes a simple model for evaluating heavy-media separation circuits, and presents a case-study of such an analysis of an operating heavy-media coal cleaning plant. Efficiency curves were calculated and modelled using Lynch's method, and a simplified expression was derived for calculating the Ecart Probability value from the model parameters.

In general, this covers the period 1940-1958 and is merely representative of what is available. Numbers in •brackets refer to items in the bibliography.It may be desirable at the outset to give a few definitions covering those terms directly related to this subject. The following is a definition of permanent-mold casting as given by J. W. Meier in a paper, ""The Non-Ferrous Metals and Alloys"", read before the Ottawa Valley Chapt.er of the American Society for Metals:""Permanent Mold Casting is used where a large number of castings of the same part are required and higher mechanical properties, greater density and closer tolerances are essential. Since metallic mold s are very expensive, the number of castings must be sufficient to, defray, at least partially, the added expense. Molds are usually made from a good quality cast iron, 1but other mold materials, such as the aluminum and copper alloys, graphite, ceramics, etc., are being used in certain cases. Important factors in permanent mold casting are the mold temperature; the proper mold dressing; and, as in all other casting methods, the mold geometry, that is to say, the design of spruces, gates, risers and vents""."

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. "This paper describes the implementation of an expert system for monitoring and control of the NO. 4 autogeneous mill and spiral circuits at Wabush Mines.This process control system incorporated the mill operating expertize of Wabush Mines operating personnel and was implemented to improve spiral iron recovery and mill productivity by:1. Continuously monitoring the mill power draw and ensuring that the mill feedrate is regulated to prevent damage to the mill motor, while simultaneously maintaining the feedrate at or as close as possible to the maximum feedrate determined by the process supervisor.2. Improving control over the spiral density and feed rate.3. Improving control over both tbe rougher and cleaner wash water.4. Reducing the frequency with which pumps are plugged.5. Allowing modifications to be made easily and quickly to test various operating strategies.This system was installed using COMDALE/C, a real-time Expert System for Process Control. It was readily accepted by the process operators and produces higher production performance in comparison to the other 5 parallel mill lines at a lower power draw."

Flaubert, as we know, laid stress on the selection of the right word, le mot juste, the precise epithet, the word that belongs to the thing. A sentence, or even a paragraph, may be spoiled by the use of a word that is not proper, that does not fit or is foreign to the meaning intended. An Australian mining expert is reported to have said: You have a property of considerable value, and what I saw warrants a good development of very rich cubicular galena, with gossan intermixed. 'Cubicular' means `belonging to a small bedroom', a `cubicle' being a sleeping compartment. He meant `cubic', of course. This is a malapropism, and reminds me of the lady from Chicago that, on her return from Europe, said how much she had enjoyed the rural parts of France, because, among other things, it was "so delightful to hear the French pheasants singing the mayonnaise to the tune of the Los Angelus". It is impossible to amalgamate coal-tar thoroughly with the pulp in the agitating-tank. In metallurgy, `amalgamate' refers to the combination of mercury with one or both of the precious metals, forming an amalgam, which is an alloy of mercury with another metal. It differs from other alloys, such as brass or bronze, in being made without the aid of heat, inasmuch as mercury is molten at the ordinary temperature. The word comes to us from the Greek. through Old French and means `something soft'. It is a mistake to use technical terms, having a specific meaning, for purposes that are foreign to that meaning. Accurate description of complex phase equilibria provide the foundations for the improvement of non-ferrous pyrometallurgical smelting and recycling processes. Recent advances in microanalysis and experimental techniques enable accurate phase equilibria characterisation. Quantitative microanalytical techniques including Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis and Laser Ablation ICP-MS enable the concentrations of major and minor elements present in different phases in samples to be accurately measured providing data that cannot be obtained using bulk chemical analysis techniques. High-temperature equilibration experiments coupled with the subsequent analysis of elementary reactions at micro- and macro-scales ensure the attainment of equilibrium conditions, and therefore, ensure true phase equilibria information is obtained. Examples of the application of the improved methodology on the investigation of phase equilibria of low-order and complex, multi-component gas/slag/matte/metal/solids Cu2O–PbO–ZnO–Al2O3–CaO–MgO– FeO–Fe2O3–SiO2–S systems and the distribution of minor element are provided. The experimental study is closely integrated with thermodynamic database development for the above system. Example of implementation of the research outcomes into industrial operations is demonstrated.

"Mineral endowment in northern British Columbia and the Yukon Territory was assessed on the basis of geological opinion which was gathered in a quantitative framework of subjective probabilities. The survey area encompassed 364,000 square miles and was divided into 310 cells having dimensions of one degree of longitude by one-half degree of latitude. The response solicited related to tonnage, grade and number of deposits of a particular mineral in each cell. The questionnaire sought an expression of mineral endowment down to mine-able depth as distinct from economic expectations. Details on the questionnaire and responses are presented in a series of contour maps on individual commooities, which illustrate the collective occurrence picture of the respondents. The approach is largely dependent on the cooperation of an adequate number of geologists familiar with the region being examined. This approach to an assessment of the mineral endowment of a region has a wide range of applicability, from the focusing of exploration effort to aiding government and development bodies in the formulation of regional strategies and the planning, for example, of road, rail and power facilities."

The objective s of this paper are: (a ) to examine and discuss the burdens we place on our extractive industry; (b) to compare the levels of taxation in Canada with those in other countries; and ( c) to suggest certain broad parameters within which our taxation policies may be made more rational and stable. Among the burdens identified are taxation, the ownership and use of our resources, environmental issues and the rather emotional issue of so-called 'super profits'. Finally, the paper will address certain broad but key areas of policy which need attention and agreement if our tax system is to be made more rational. Such areas include: whether and if so why the extractive industry should be given incentives;. what circumstances, if any, justify a 'higher' than normal' level of taxation, and, ?if the concept of economic rents is a justifiable one, how might a basis for them be established which recognizes the fluctuating value of much of the industry's output. Note: The paper was written before the 1977 Federal and Provincial budgets were presented. Consequently, the paper does not reflect any changes proposed in these budgets.

The Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of southwestern Newfoundland merit investigation because of petroleum, salt and gypsum possibilities and indications of base metallization along the equivalent of the Horton-Windsor con-tact. In this paper, Lower Mississippian (Anguille) strata are divided into three formations: (1) the Cape John below, (2) the Snakes Bight and (3) the Seacliffs. A correlation between these formations and the Craignish, Strathlorne and Ainslie formations of the Horton group? in western Cape Breton Island is suggested. The criteria for the Anguille subdivision are essentially lithological, but preliminary study of included spore assemblages suggests more precise interformational correlations between Anguille and Horton sequences. The re-measured lower portion of the type section of the Codroy group is presented to define more clearly the stratigraphic position of numerous gypsum and limestone beds. This is the second report to be presented on th application of stress analysis to underground Mining problems. In part I2/ of this investigation the stress distribution around single openings in unidirectional and hydrostatic stress fields was analyzed. Relationships between maximum stress concentration and size and shape of openings were determined by the photoelastic method. In most cases the results were verified by mathematical methods This report considers the stress distribution in pillars formed by two or more openings in a. unidirectional stress field. Relationships between stress concentrations and size and shape of pillars are developed. Applied to mining, results snow how estimates may be made of the stress distribution in pillars, what factors cause high local stresses, and how local stress concentrations may be reduced by proper design of mine openings. The photoelastic method was used, as in Part I, to study the stress distributions, and, whenever possible, the results were verified mathematically. A description of the photoelastic method and equipment is .given in Part I.

The contemplated use of dichloro-difluorco methane in domestic and commercial refrigerating appliances and in air-conditioning equipment for public buildings and possibly homes, brims attention to the health hazards involved in a wide potential exposure of the public to vapors of another new product, and for the first time to vapors of an organic fluorino compound. The objective in the development of this new refrigerant, however, has been the mitigation of health and explosion hazards in automatic refrigeration, and accordingly these factors have been given primary attention. Early in the development, the Bureau of Mines as requested to make a laboratory study of the toxicity and potential hazard, and it was ca the oasis of the results is of this work and the results of a preliminary investigation made in another laboratory6 that the compound has been selected for commercial use. The investigation conducted by the Bureau of Mines is still in progress, enough information has been obtained to indicate the order of the toxicity and the magnitude of the health hazards involved in the use of dichloro-difluoro methane as a refrigerant. DURING the early development of blasting with liquid oxygen explosives the trend of experimentation was towards increasing the effectiveness of the explosive. Its characteristic of becoming inert after evaporation of the oxygen content made a strong appeal from the standpoint of safety, especially with missed holes. It later became apparent, however, with practical use of this explosive, that LOX lacked certain other safety characteristics. As its effectiveness was increased, it became more subject to detonation by impact. The object of this paper is to show the steps taken by one operating company to achieve greater safety in the large-scale handling of liquid oxygen explosives.

The CSense advanced process control (APC) solution?s main objective was to improve the stability of the pH in the first stage leach process thereby improving nickel and iron extraction efficiencies and reducing the base metal (BM) content in the platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate. By improving the stability of the control of the pH on the first stage leach it had the corresponding effect of improving the Ni extraction efficiency by 0.5% and the Fe extraction efficiency by 3.3%. The system relieved the operators of many decisions that were virtually impossible to make given the complex, variable and real-time nature of the processes in their charge. On the operational side, the operators understand the APC system and they trust it. Another benefit is the reduction in pH peaks in the autoclave, which can oxidize certain elements whereby they become difficult, if not impossible, to leach. These elements go right through the process and end up contaminating the PGM solids, with the result that the entire batch has to be recycled through a lengthy and costly processing pipeline.

In September, 1953, seismographs were installed in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta and British Columbia to study the 'bumps' which were occurring in the coal mines at Fernie and Coleman, and to investigate the possibility that they might be related to minor earthquakes in the area. During the initial phase of the work, three seismographs were operated at widely separated stations, two in the region of coal mines at Coal Creek and Coleman and one at Turner Valley, distant from any mining operations. Some earthquakes were recorded at all three stations and, in addition, many small disturbances were recorded by the seismographs located near the mines, especially -by the instrument at Goal Greek. A closer network of radio-linked seismographs was then in-stalled near Fernie, the records of which definitely established that the small disturbances were occurring in the mine workings, both active and inactive. No relationship was established between bumps and local earth-quakes in the area. This work was initiated as a -co-operative effort with the Fuels Di-vision of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, which has undertaken a study into the phenomena of ground stress relief in underground mine workings.
