INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Phosphate matrix beneficiation is the process of providing a mineral product suitable for downstream chemical processing to yield high analysis chemical fertil- zers. Extraneous contaminants, clays and gangue solids, are separated by screening and flotation. Reject materials always carry with them some phosphate mineral values, however. A continuing objective is minimizing phosphate losses discarded with tailings as a principle factor in maintaining beneficiation efficiency. The quest for efficiency, and improved productivity, during beneficiation is hampered by disturbances arising from among the following: o Natural variance of phosphate deposit compositions, o Minimal control over managing ore matrix supply to the plants, o Screening and flotation mechanical upsets and inefficiencies. Production personnel, in recognizing these factors, attempt corrections for changed process conditions. This response usually has limited effect. Efforts of product- ion personnel to correct for upsets of the process may often diminish efficiencies rather than improve them. Lack of prompt data for analysis of process streams is an important contributing cause of inefficient operation. Discussion in this paper examines methods for improved process control in Florida phosphate beneficiation with particular emphasis on use of on-stream analysis to aid gaining productivity. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research has supported demonstration of on-stream analysis applicable to improved process control. Concurrently, work is proceeding world-wide in the phosphate industry toward practical on-line analysis technology. Table 1 summarizes viable methods for real-time analysis data as result of work by individual companies and research organizations. A recently completed investigation (sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research) of beneficiation efficiency was carried out in two Florida beneficiation plants using a newly developed on-stream analyzer for phosphorus (1). BPL measurements were taken at frequent intervals over two to three weeks of routine operation. Grades are expressed in "BPL", with one BPL, or bone phosphate of lime unit, equal to 0.46 P^Y2^YO^Y5^Y. The time series of feed and tailing BPL data were evaluated by statistical procedures. Results show avoidable losses can be five per cent or greater of mineral values in feed. Use of modern process control methods in Florida phosphate mining began several years ago (2, 3). Benefits of stabilizing control used in one of the two plants where data were collected for the investigation, in comparison to manual control in the other, are outlined. Process control technology developments reported from European and South African phosphate mining operations are also noted (4, 5). It is now well accepted that advanced control techniques can increase beneficiation productivity by better management of losses. However, to make advanced control effective, real-time measurements are needed of feed and tailings BPL as well as mass flow rates.

In January 1999, a redesign of the Kennecott Flash Converting furnace settler was initiated to enhance furnace integrity and extend furnace life. This furnace uses Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting technology to produce copper directly from copper matte. A detailed assessment was made of all technology available around the world before making a decision on the design features to be incorporated in the new design. The new design includes the following: redesign of all sidewall cooling elements to include the latest cooling element technology; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stadium hearth at the reaction shaft end of the furnace; redesign of the furnace hearth to include a stepped hearth design adjacent to the furnace sidewalls; addition of flat settler roof cooling elements .around the reaction shaft; replacement of reaction shaft transition elements with an improved design and improvements to the furnace cooling element monitoring systems. The Flash Converting furnace was shut down on a planned basis in July 2001 to implement these improvements after 29 months of operation, converting more than 1,000,000 tonnes of matte. During the 30 day shut down, the improvements were successfully completed, with furnace start up in August 2001

"This paper outlines a management philosophy aimed at promoting employee involvement, quality and process improvement at Inco 's Thompson operations. It describes the use of statistical process control techniques, lessons learned and examples of progress.IntroductionThis paper provides an overview of the Manitoba Division's performance through the promotion of greater employee involvement, quality and process improvement. Having learned from other practitioners o f quality management, the Manitoba Division believes its experiences are applicable to all mining and other businesses.The Thompson operation consists of two underground mines, an open pit, a mill, a smelter and an electrolytic refinery. The workforce consists of 2000 members. The main products are electrolytic nickel slab and proprietary nickel rounds. Production levels are currently at capacity in response to heavy market demand.Paralleling much of the mining industry the corporation was faced with six years of decreasing nickel prices (Fig. I). Inco Limited survived by focusing on productivity and cost improvement. Manitoba Division productivity improved 32070 over three years beginning in 1982-the worst financial year in the company's history (Fig. 2). A real unit cost reduction of 20%, net of inflation, was also achieved (Fig . 3)."

Beginning from the point of view that process control of ore flotation can be approached by on-line analysis of processing behavior, an equation was developed which has characteristics useful for a multi-variable feedback loop. The application of this equation to optimizing control with a data acquisition system will be discussed in Part 11. OBJECTIVE OF CONTROL The purpose of developing a feedback method for concentrator control is to provide a means for determining ore processing behavior in order that data describing the ore can be used to make appropriate changes in control conditions while the ore continues to flow through the flotation circuit. In absence of simple linear relationships between pairs of variables in the flotation process, attention is directed to the need for a generalized relationship which possibly would incorporate all pertinent variables. It would be possible to apply such an equation to the control of variables in a concentrator in real time according to operational requirements as ore gradually changes in quality and processing behavior. To meet this objective, it is necessary to define relationships describing flotation performance in terms of performance variables capable of being measured on-line, either with on-line instruments and analyzers or with manual methods lending themselves to quick determination of meaningful information. Relationships derived to meet this objective form a model for the flotation process. The evaluation of flotation parameters of the ore and the execution of control on the basis of the derived information while the ore is continuing through the process would constitute a feedback control system. Data for the following control and performance variables can be made available: 1) ore feed rate, 2) collector addition rate, 3) lime addition rate, 4) pulp density, 5) assay or multiple assays in feed, tails, or concentrate sufficient for material balancing, 6) particle size distribution in flotation feed, 7) froth height, and 8) frother addition rate. Other process variables, such as flotation air input and mechanical agitation intensity, are usually not considered as control variables and were not taken into account in this analysis. Other data, such as that describing the ore, would be useful for concentrator process control. However, information of this type (such as ore hardness, grain size of the mineral, chemical species of the mineral, and ore surface properties) being not presently measurable in the on-line sense, has the effect of causing disturbances in the system which can be detected only indirectly. The process control system being sought must recognize disturbances by their effect on measured performance followed by determining control changes to compensate for them in meeting the objectives of improved performance (perhaps higher throughput, maximum return, etc.). A suitable model for the process having capability of recognizing the effects of ore disturbances should provide the means for introducing proper compensation through control changes. This would be done by processing on-line data with the model to calculate coefficients reflecting ore characteristics. This procedure can only be applied in a typical flotation system when on-line data can be processed at faster rates than the usual rate at which the ore in flotation feed takes on significantly different characteristics. For example, material balance data can be accumulated in approximately 5-min intervals using on-line X-ray fluorescence analysis. The flotation system time constant might be 15 min including grinding. Ore changes having time constants longer than 1 hr could be accommodated using on-line feedback control by this procedure. Rockburst conditions were first encountered at Inco's Sudbury area operations in the mid 1930's when mining advanced to below the 610 m (2000 ft.) horizon. Now, mining is being carried out at depths down to 2130 m (7000 ft.) at Inco'a Creighton Mine. While rockburst potentials have increased with depth. improvements in mine planning, methods, support systems and developments in destressing have alleviated the condition to where it is less of a problem now than it was in the early years. Hang of the improvements were developed, of necessity. through observation and reasoning because these were the only tools available at the time. Now, we are making use of stress - measurements, numerical modelling and microseismic source location technology to - help further reduce rockburat hazards.

At intervals during the past several years the oil industry has been confronted with the problem of forestalling crises in its affairs. These crises have been reduced to periods of depression which, fortunately, the industry has been able to survive. Under the existing competitive practices which control the producing division of the industry it apparently has been proved that the best efforts logically to curtail development and producing operations are inadequate for effecting a true production balance and the consequent stabilization of prices. The industry is awakening to the fact that the situation warrants revolutionary thought and at this time it is looking for a permanent solution of its problem in a general plan for unit development and operation such as the one first proposed by Henry L. Doherty. Mr. Doherty's proposal was designed not only as a means for stabilizing the industry as a whole, but its principles involve very definite potential benefits for the average individual operator and royalty owner as participants in pooled projects. The benefits to these individuals would be derived from maximum recovery, the maximum utilization of natural energies, the minimization of development and operating costs, enhanced values of leases and royalties through improved efficiencies and ultimate yields, improved earnings through stabilized crude oil prices, etc. This plan was revolutionary to the industry's practices and at the time was rejected, but it now appears that the development and operating policies for new properties are continually approaching the ideal of the original plan. Oil companies are constantly extending their efforts to improve all factors that have a bearing on the costs and efficiencies of their operations. These efforts may, in some degree, be a normal outgrowth of the industry's progress, but the forced consideration of market conditions, the growing appreciation of the importance of regulating operations for maximum ultimate economies and the depreciation of the old principle of maximum flush at any cost, come from a new school of thought which has been stimulated by the immediate pressure of overproduction and

This report describes the results of a 2-year investigation of extensible face ventilation techniques and systems for use at the working face in underground coal mines. The goal was to provide a safe and convenient method of maintaining the extensible system within 10 feet of the face, thereby ensuring good ventilation. A summary of approximately 20 extensible ventilation systems proposed or tried in the past is included for reference, together with a detailed description of the design, construction, and underground testing of a new extensible brattice panel and a new fiberglass duct system. The extensible brattice system utilized a special panel which could be pushed forward as the miner advanced. Brief testing in three mines revealed some conflict with the mining cycle and led to recommendations for two improved designs. The extensible duct system was designed for a Goodman borer and utilized a telescoping tube on the left side of the roof, so that it could be extended without interfering with the miner operator. For mine sections with right-hand return ventilation, a special flat tube section is used to cross over the entry. Underground testing showed substantial improvement in face ventilation without interfering with production.

Long tendon support systems provide several challenges when used in-cycle as part of the secondary or primary support cycle. A two-component pumpable resin, Carbothix, has been in development for use with self-drilling rock bolts, but many of the attributes of this new resin system make it ideal for grouting long tendon support systems. While neat Portland cement grouts or polyester resin capsules have been used with long tendon support systems for many years, two-component pumpable resin systems overcome many of the shortcomings in these systems. The two-component systems dramatically improve the set-time to enable mining face advance with fewer delays, enable longer pumping distances, improve quality control, and enhance load transfer mechanisms. This paper describes the key benefits associated with a new pumpable resin and details the Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum department atmospheric testing results and cable load testing completed by Minova personnel to date. It also details the results of the Australian mine site trials and the introduction of these systems into production use.

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. A modified coal flotation characterization procedure, referred to as the Advanced Flotation Washability (AFW) technique, has been developed which, compared to traditional procedures, provides a more accurate prediction of the optimum separation performance achievable by a froth flotation process. The AFW procedure uses a vertically-baffled flotation column which provides enhanced selectivity among particles of varying degrees of hydrophobicity due to a plug-flow environment and an improved carrying-capacity environment. In fact, the separation performance of the traditional procedures was enhanced by increasing the possibility of operating under improved selectivity conditions. The separation performance provided by the AFW procedure was superior to that obtained from multiple cleaning stages using commercially-available flotation columns under both kinetic and carrying-capacity limiting conditions.

"Froth flotation is widely used to selectively separate one or more minerals from an ore over a wide range of particle sizes with high efficiency. Bubble–particle attachment is one of the most critical steps in flotation. The objective of this project is to demonstrate the need for an innovative dual bubble generator to improve flotation efficiency. This dual bubble generator was designed to generate two different sizes (micron size and typical flotation size) bubbles. The micron size bubbles generated on the crevices of particle surfaces in venturi type of cavitation tubes enhanced the attachment of fine particles to the bubbles in conventional flotation systems. They also acted as a secondary collector, which has the potential to reduce operation cost and improve flotation recovery. The dual bubble generator was evaluated for a double refractory gold ore with 3g/t Au, 1.5 wt% TCM (total carbonaceous matter) and 0.7 wt% sulfides. The results were compared with those obtained using a commercial bubble generator. Compared with the commercial bubble generator, the dual bubble generator showed not only a higher gold recovery, but also an improved separation efficiency, demonstrating the potential of dual bubble generator in fine particle flotation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation has been widely used in mineral processing and waste water treatment. However, flotation has been proven inefficient for fine particle recovery although it becomes increasingly inevitable to process fine particles with the depletion of easy processing ores. The critical problem of fine particle flotation is the low attachment of fine particles to flotation size bubbles due to their low collision rate. Based on a commonly acceptable flotation model given by R =F*[Pc*Pa*(1-Pd)], the probability of bubble–particle collision (Pc), attachment (Pa) and particles detachment from air bubbles (Pd) collectively determines fine particle recovery (R) (Yoon and Luttrell, 1986). Since Pc = (3Dp/Db) where Dp and Db are diameters of particles and bubbles, respectively, bubble size and particle size impact the bubble-particle collision in opposite directions. It is evident that the probability of bubble–particle collision decreases with decreasing the size of particles, leading to a low recovery of fine particles. In this case, reducing the bubble size and/or increasing the apparent size of particles by fine particle aggregation are clear means to improve fine particle recovery."

The Golden Mile, which has been mined continuously for the past 100 years by both underground and more recently open pit methods, occupies an area of 1.2 km by 4 km adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia (Figure 1). Large-scale open pit mining at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operations is currently extracting 7.8 million tonnes of oxide and sulphide ore for a total production of 522 000 oz per annum. The effectiveness of grade estimation techniques at KCGM has been examined with reference to existing 10 m bench sample data from all operating areas within the Eastern Lode System of the Main and North pits. The aim of the study was to recommend practical parameters for grade control estimation. The review included comprehensive variography and comparison of nonparametric estimation methods (Joumel, 1983) such as indicator kriging and probability kriging with ordinary kriging, leading to the development of improved grade control parameters and procedures for both daily quality control and short term mine planning. This paper reviews the geological, statistical, geostatistical, mining and modelling features studied in order to present KCGM's Mining Department with recommendations for improving grade control.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. "Mechanical alloying (MA) and thermohydrogen processing (THP) approaches were used to synthesize amorphous or nanocrystalline powders of the titanium-aluminide-based alloys and composites. Fully dense samples with nanocrystalline and bimodal structures were produced from these powders by hot isostatic pressing. The stability of the microstructures during continuous heating at high temperatures was studied. Characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were used in this work.IntroductionAs performance demands increase, so do the demands for enhanced mechanical property combinations at reduced overall weight; and reduced weight can most efficiently be realized by the use of low-density metals with high specific strength, such as titanium alloys and titanium-aluminum intermetallics [l]. The TiAl-based alloys are attractive for high temperature applications, however, they exhibit poor ambient temperature ductility and fracture toughness [2-4]. Incremental improvements can be obtained using ingot metallurgy processing [1,2] but more substantial developments require ""far from equilibrium"" (FFE) synthesis [5-8] which allows development of novel constitutional and microstructural effects, leading to enhanced physical and mechanical properties. Improved ductility of titanium aluminide intermetallics can be achieved by disordering, grain refinement and deoxidation of the matrix, while good elevated temperature properties are achieved due to a dispersion of fine, thermodynamically stable, second phase particles.The approaches for producing nanocrystalline and amorphous TiAl-based alloys and composites used in this work included FFE powder metallurgy techniques such as rapid solidification, mechanical alloying and thermohydrogen processing. The rapid solidification (RS) technique allows extension of solubility limits, production of novel phases, and much more refined microstructures (down to nanostructure or even amorphous range) than is possible using the ingot metallurgy technique [9]. Mechanical alloying (MA) is a process in which heavy working of powder particles results in intimate alloying by repeated deformation, fracturing and welding. This process can produce greater departure from FFE than RS, leading to greater refinement effects; and additionally allows production of a dispersion of second phase particles [10]. Thermohydrogen processing involves hydrogen as a temporary alloying element in titanium to facilitate processes, refine microstructure, and improve final mechanical properties [11]; it was used in the present work to improve MA process. The combination of these three processes was expected to control the final microstructure even better than either process used alone."

SINCE the inception of dredge mining, the attention of engineers and operators has been directed primarily toward mechanical improvements and refinements calculated to, reduce operating costs and to increase recoveries. The result has been to develop an efficient excavating and value-saving machine, which, in some instances, has an actual capacity of 15,000 cu yd. per day. Steel hulls and superstructures minimize the risk of destruction by fire and lengthen the life of the plant. Dredges now restore, to some extent, agricultural possibilities to mined ground. Large buckets, with correspondingly heavy parts, are able to handle heavy wash and massive boulders. Mechanical weaknesses have been strengthened. The use of manganese steel in bucket lines and tumblers permits the application too the bank of a digging force that can be withstood only by solid material, such as rock, cement or frozen ground. Various alloys of steel have been applied to certain duties and experiments in their heat treatment are still progressing. Haulage by tractor or truck is in common use. Discarded and worn steel parts are repaired or rebuilt by the use of the oxy-acetylene flame and the arc-welding machine. Gold and platinum saving is more efficient, although still subject to improvement. Dredging for tin ore is in successful operation. Crews are now highly specialized and experience has developed improved methods of work; particularly in the manipulation of dredges to build levees of tailings and to leave open waterways where desired. To sum up by the distribution of overhead expense over several units, ground under favorable conditions can now be dredge-mined for 5)2 c. per cu: yd., in spite of the increase in cost of supplies, power, and labor during, the past few years. Improvements in prospecting methods, however, have not kept pace with mechanical developments. Standard practices of ; testing ground today produce only wide approximations of values; although they obtain information concerning the character of the deposit and bedrock. It is interesting to note that few important changes in the methods of ten years ago are .to be recorded; the latest comparisons between pros¬pecting results and mined recoveries-have been at such variance as to cause confusion to the operator, and, in a degree, the sacrifice of the confidence of the capitalist. Ternium-Siderar steelmaking has been focused in permanent improvements and process optimization. At present the Slab Continuous Caster N°1 has been totally transformed after 20 years of uninterrupted work. The authors of this paper summarize and comment on aspects which were the main changes and place emphasis largely on those technological developments in which they have been active during that period. Productivity and quality have been our goals during the last 20 years; it has led us to improve process and to achieve better control tools. In the development of this presentation, the authors will put special emphasis on the explanation of those works that were made following their own experiences through the technical personnel who belong to the staff of the company.

This paper is for mine managers. It is about maintenance of mining equipment. This is an extremely broad subject so this paper is given with the caveat that it necessarily contains generalisations, not true in all cases, but broadly correct. The job of mine managers is to be good at making money from the excavation and preliminary treatment of mineral. To do this well, they need to understand the cost and value drivers in the business. This includes understanding the drivers associated with maintenance. Maintenance is often identified as a problem at mine sites. It is frequently listed as the cause of production shortfalls when reporting. The state of maintenance within mining as an industry is generally among the lower end of the range, when compared to manufacturing, petrochemicals, etc. Why is this? Experience and review of many audits and evaluations of maintenance has shown that some patterns are consistent with good performance and some consistent with poor performance. These often centre around the time horizon of the management team and are associated with knowing the sensitivity of the business to certain maintenance drivers and the mechanisms of maintenance and their results. To summarise, some common misunderstandings can be listed as statements that are obvious and extrapolations from those, which are not necessarily correct. For example: High availability of equipment is necessary for production. Incorrect extrapolation:focus on availability will produce high production. Design is often the greatest factor in determining the reliability of a mining machine. Incorrect extrapolation: the newest and biggest machines generally have the lowest cost operations. Operation has an enormous impact on machine productivity and reliability. Incorrect extrapolation: the fastest operators are generally the best from a productive point of view. Some maintenance improves the performance and reliability of machines. Incorrect extrapolation: more maintenance will give you more reliability. Some maintenance depends on disassembly and reassembly of components. Incorrect extrapolation: assembly is basically the reverse process of disassembly. Maintenance improvement in the mining industry in the last 15 years has focused largely on planning and systems improvement. Incorrect extrapolation: most of the problems in maintenance can be traced to a lack of planning. Actions based on flawed extrapolations will steer a business suboptimally. It is therefore important that the mine manager understands these issues so that the improvement effort can be directed to the greatest benefit.

THE campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome f the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc., on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack f continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination f the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved.

Aggressive driving patterns, rough and poorly maintained roads and pit floors, along with the occasional bump and poorly placed load from a shovel can create intense and sometimes serious vibration levels on a heavy hauler. The effects of high vibration have been shown to be of concern for the health of the operator as well as the reliability of the equipment. It is proposed that an onboard vibration warning system based on the ISO 2631-1 standard could be used to help operators reduce the vibration levels experienced in a heavy hauler. The onboard system would consist of a screen that displays the instantaneous vibration in the form of three lights: green (safe zone), yellow (cautious zone), and red (danger zone), as well as an overall vibration exposure or dose for the entire shift. With the utilization of the warning system, it is anticipated that the overall vibration levels will be decreased resulting in improved operator health, a reduction of vibration-induced maintenance, and improved haul roads through reduced impact loading and repair for localized trouble areas.
