As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program seeking improvements to the Bayer process, a typical Jamaican bauxite was heated at temperatures up to 500° C in hydrogen, and its leachability under Bayer process conditions was measured and properties of its leached residue were observed. The objectives were to find ways to decrease the amount of organic carbon in bauxite or in leach liquor derived from it without impairing its leachability, and to improve the leached residue's filterability. Techniques employed included heating bauxite under pressure in an autoclave with hydrogen, and in flowing hydrogen at ambient pressure in a tube furnace. Leaching tests were done with a 600-mL stirred reactor. In some of the leaching tests, ferrous sulfate (FeS04) was introduced before leaching to produce a partially magnetic product. Results showed that exposure to hydrogen at temperatures from 160° to 360° C progressively diminished the bauxite's content of organic carbon and decreased the ratio of organic carbon to aluminum in leach liquor, an improvement that would allow a process using hydrogen-treated bauxite to be operated at a smaller recycle ratio, thereby consuming less energy and allowing greater throughput for a plant of given capacity. The bauxite's leachability was not impaired by high-temperature pretreatments, except at temperatures higher than 280° C. Pretreatments in hydrogen produced black, partially reduced bauxite which upon leaching gave a residue that was attracted to a magnetic field and was amenable to separation from green liquor by a magnetic filtration method.

Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

The campaign now being waged to improve the quality of the rock-drill bit is the natural outcome of the scientific development of the drilling machine during the past twenty years. In this development there has been a great increase of power output per unit of weight of machine. But the development of the rock drilling engine has been seriously hampered by the need of a drill bit that would withstand, without undue wear or breakage, the heavy rapid blows of the improved pneumatic hammer. This problem was difficult to solve because an increase in the weight or section of the drill-steel bar resulted in decreased cutting speed and higher operating costs of both the bit and its actuating engine. The solution, therefore, is to make the bit of steel that, for a given weight or section, will be more shock and wear resisting. In the attempt to meet these requirements, many of the drill-steel manufacturers alloyed the steel with vanadium, chromium, nickel, etc. on the assumption that such elements would improve the rock-drill bit but due to the sensitiveness of such steel to forging and heat treatment, higher cost, and lack of continuity of effort on the part of the steel manufacturer to perfect this product, but little progress has been made in the adoption of these steels and the so-called straight carbon steel is today recognized as the standard material for all rock-drill bits. The first step in improving drill-bit efficiency is the determination of the cause of breakage and wear. For this reason, in 1917, certain rock-drill manufacturers, in conjunction with some of the larger mining interests, conducted exhaustive tests in both the field and the laboratory. It was then found that, in the main, the cause of drill-steel troubles is not attributable to the duty imposed upon it by the normal operation of the drilling engine, but to improper forging and heat treating of the bit and to the subjecting of the bit to improper use. The fact that it is possible to minimize the troubles attributable to improper heat treatment of the drill steel has been demonstrated and it is recommended that such knowledge be made available by teaching those interested in the production, use, and up-keep of drill bits the principles on which success in this direction may be achieved. Igarape Bahia Mine, which is currently the largest gold producer in Brazil, belongs to Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD and is situated 250 miles south of Belem, state of Para, Brazil. It came into operation in 1992 with the startup of the CIP plant, fed with high grade ore, presently at 3.4gAu/t. The ore is totally oxidized, containing extremely fine particles of free gold. The ore is soft and low cyanide consumer, with a maximum work index of 12kwh/sht. In 1993 a Heap Leaching Plant was set into operation, handling low grade ore of · 1.s g Ault. The Heap Leaching Plant has undergone two major expansions. In 1994 its capacity was raised from lMtpy to 2,2Mtpy and in 1998, with a thorough remodeling of crushing operations, it was raised again to 3.5Mtpy. The CIP plant, which was originally designed with a capacity for l. lMtpy of ore, was expanded to a 2.2Mtpy capacity in 1994. Presently, the CIP plant accounts for most of Igarape Bahia's total gold output, with approximately 220,000oz per year. Igarape Bahia's annual output is around 360.000 oz. Over the last three years, work has been intensified to improve performance of both processes, aiming at maximizing productivity of the two industrial plants. Reduced costs and increased revenues have been given a special emphasis in the unified improvement program. Cost · reduction has involved developing methodologies to rationalize consumption of materials and inputs, while increased productivity has been given top priority as a means of generating increasing revenues. Thus, all of the improvement and development efforts have had a common goal: to increase operating income.

On August 6, 2007, the Crandall Canyon Mine experienced a collapse which trapped six mine-workers. An MW 4.1 seismic event was recorded in conjunction with this collapse. An additional 54 seismic events were detected and located in the vicinity via routine processing techniques during the month of the collapse. Waveformbased cross-correlation detection techniques have been used to uncover 1,328 small, previously undetected seismic events which occurred near the collapse area between July 26 and August 9, 2007. This work has resulted in lowering the magnitude threshold of completeness from ML 1.6 to ML -0.5, a 2.1 order-of-magnitude improvement over standard processing techniques. Event locations have been computed using a double-difference inversion. The spatial pattern of events ultimately helps to delineate the extent of the collapsed area. It is shown that many of the large catalogued events (>ML1.6) tend to be closely followed by numerous (often 20 or more) smaller aftershocks. Cluster analysis of the known catalog reinforces prior work indicating the existence of seismic clustering on the east and west sides of the collapse. Research now demonstrates that it is possible to differentiate events related to the main collapse from those related to the rescue attempt following the collapse. The cross-correlation techniques described herein greatly improve the ability to detect small mining-induced seismic events. These methods may lead to improvements in assessing seismic hazards for conditions similar to those observed at Crandall Canyon preceding the collapse.

"This paper presents the study of the increasing addition influence of the bauxite waste in some properties of polymeric matrices composites reinforced with natural fiber: Curaua (Ananas Erectifolius smith). There were evaluated properties as density, tensile and flexural resistances. The high pH provided by the waste is used as hydrolysis agent, providing the pectin cement dissolution of the fiber bundles, and therefore, improving the mechanical adhesion in the fibermatrix interface and the increase of the fiber bundles aspect ratio. Furthermore, the content of silico-aluminous material in the waste provides increase in the composite abrasivity, which is destined to civil and naval construction. The fact of being a low-cost and highly available waste turns the red mud in a high potential material as polymeric composite filler.IntroductionRed mud is an insoluble residue, originated from the bauxite refining through the Bayer Process [1]. It is an Iron Oxide rich material [2] (substance responsible for the red brick color), it has a complex chemical composition [3], and its composition is highly dependent of the type of bauxite used in the process [4]. It has high alkalinity (pH= 10 - 12.5) and a very small solids size distribution (95% diameter< 44µm) [1], what turns the red mud a serious environmental pollutant.The utilization of fillers on composite materials is done after many necessities; however, one of the major necessities is the cost reduction [5]. Furthermore, mechanical and thermal properties of polymers usually are improved by the addition of inorganic fillers [6], being an example of this improvement the reduction of the flammability of polymer matrixes due to the addition of functional clays [7]. In this way, the red mud becomes potential filler for composites, since cheap and easily available fillers (like red mud) are a good option to reduce costs [8]."

FoR more than 30 years California has been one of the three leading oil-producing states. Present daily production of crude oil under curtailment, approximately 580,000 bbl., comes from three general areas: Los Angeles Basin, San Joaquin Valley, and the coastal region of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. This state produces approximately two-thirds of its oil from eight large fields, and obtains a daily average production of 48 bbl. of oil per producing well, whereas the average for the United States is but 8.15 barrels. During the closing stages of the first half of 1936, discovery of the Section Ten oil field was made, and credit goes solely to geophysical work. It is the first direct important discovery of oil in California that may be credited to geophysics. This discovery may furnish the cue to the means of discovering several fields in California, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley. It is a question, however, whether returns from geophysical work will play as important a part in the future supply of oil in California as have our former types of prospecting. Explobation Methods of prospecting have progressed in the oil industry through invention or improvement in scientific means of locating and defining structure and because of market improvements in drilling equipment. Present methods of prospecting include: 1. A detailed study of geology in an attempt to locate structural and stratigraphic conditions that would be favorable to the accumulation of oil. 2. Geophysical methods involving the use of the seismograph, torsion balance, magnetometer and electrical methods. (There is still much to be learned in California in the application of geophysical methods.) 3. Use of micropaleontology as an aid in correlation,. The principal improvements in drilling equipment are: 1. The Schlumberger dipmeter, which determines the direction of formation dip in an uncased hole.

Since 1989 Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines has managed the Kalgoorlie gold operations of joint venture partners Normandy Mining Ltd and Homestake Gold of Australia Ltd. Current production from the Fimiston Open Pit is approximately 650 000 ounces per annum. The mine incorporates a multitude of narrow shear hosted, subvertical lodes, predominantly within Golden Mile Dolerite. Traditionally KCGM has used blasthole based grade control in the Fimiston pits. A single sample is taken from vertical production blastholes, drilled on ten metre benches. This process was improved with the addition of infill drilling along blasthole rows to provide additional samples across strike. However the limitations of adequately defining subvertical mineralised structures with vertical blastholes remain. In 1997 the first of two trial areas were drilled with close spaced, inclined Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling. These tests indicated that RC based grade control had the potential to provide significant advantages. These include:improved delineation of mineralised structures, particularly across strike; reliable short-term mine schedules based on the advance data available from drilling over three benches; and the angled RC drilling is capable of providing samples of near stope and stope fill material which often remains unsampled by blasthole drills due to the safety constraints around unstable underground openings. Based on the success of this initial work RC based grade control was gradually implemented across production areas commencing September 1998. Some of the many challenges faced include:development of effective procedures and systems for the planning, logging, interpretation and modelling of the RC data; obtaining adequate drill coverage due to mine scheduling constraints and restricted access around underground openings; requirement for integrated systems to handle either blast hole or RC data; and development of effective methods to evaluate the performance of RC grade control. RC based grade control is delivering significantly improved lode definition, grade estimation and subsequent ore classification.

Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar&apos;s worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. The proposal of such improvements is often met by the argument that any mine is but a temporary affair, yielding such profits as to make efficiency-work of no consequence; but any business which is profitable and worth doing at all is worth doing on a basis which gives the greatest return on the investment.

It is well known, in metallurgical circles, though less recognized in the technical press, that there have been remarkable increases in the capacity of the blast furnace in the last five .years. In places this capacity has been almost doubled. This paper will brief the experimental work carried on during more than five years with the direct assistance of the technical staffs of three lead smelters treating three distinctive types of feed. The first is the custom smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. at Tooele, Utah1, with a multiplicity of ores; the second, the Kellogg, Idaho, smelter of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating CO.2, treating an exceedingly rich lead charge, such as is now being made more and more as the practice of concentration is improved; and the third, the smelter at Trail, B. C., owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited3, which treats highly zinciferous charges and later recovers zinc from the slag. In comparing operations at these three smelters it must be clearly recognized that the objectives in smelting differ through differences in economics. Many operations are not, then, strictly comparable. There have also been decided improvements in operation since all of the smelters were examined, though this was but a relatively short time ago. The general factors that govern speed in smelting and the loss of metals in the smelters examined will be stressed. (For details of operation the reader is referred to the original papers.) This paper will then be an examination of the fundamentals of operating units in a search for improvements, and not a description of three great lead smelters. SHORTLY after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bes-semer process stimulated a, rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracite and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt,, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast tempera-ture not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given tile chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell&apos;s pains-taking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell&apos;s recog-nition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory.

The mining industry faces many workplace hazards that are a threat to human health and safety. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that employees in coal mining are more likely to be killed or sustain an injury or illness than workers in private industry. These injuries are also likely to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). In recent years, coal mining injuries have attained national attention due to highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year(National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment, such as the norms, rules, and common understandings that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce the mining industry to a multi-methodological approach to safety culture assessments. Further, it is the goal of this manuscript to highlight the value of including both quantitative and qualitative methods into safety culture assessments in order to obtain the most comprehensive view of an organization?s safety culture. Because this manuscript focuses solely on the methodology implemented, data and results obtained during the five safety culture assessments will not be presented in this manuscript, but will appear in a future publication.

In August 1993, the operation of Refimet Chile&apos;s copper custom smelter commenced at La Negra, near Antofagasta in northern Chile. Design smelter throughput corresponded to 235 000 tonnes of concentrate, calcines and copper cements arising from suppliers in the north of the country to produce 90 000 t/y of blister copper. Refimet had initially gained experienced in building and operating leaching, roasting and a blast furnace facility at Rungue, near Santiago, followed by Roasting at La Negra. The initial smelter project was based on conventional reverb- smelting and Peirce-Smith converting and the majority of equipment was &apos;purchased second-hand and rehabilitated or modified. After only 3 years in production, the treatment capacity was significantly improved by introduction of technical improvements to the original plant operating scheme. Recently, the plant was further expanded to an annual smelting capacity in excess of 400 000 t/y feed, corresponding to around 160 000 t/y copper production. This expansion, referred to as Phase 2, was achieved by modification of the reverb to oxy-fuel firing, addition of a further (second-hand) acid plant, fire refining and anode casting facilities. Parallel development of concentrate injection into enlarged converters-also took place. Following successful commissioning of Phase 2 expansion, initial engineering studies for a third expansion phase have been completed. This aims to use leading technology based on bath smelting of bone-dry concentrates in a Continuous Reactor. This paper provides an overview of the relatively short plant history, its development and improvements together with operating indices achieved.

"This paper addresses the occurrence and indicated causes of conveyor fires in North American and European underground mines. Some significant convey or fires which have been experienced in recent years in Canadian hardrock mines are then reviewed. The nature of existing conveyor monitoring technology is considered in the context of such fire hazards. Experiences with new monitoring technology recently installed at several conveyor sites at Inca Ltd. mines are then reviewed.IntroductionFires associated with conveyors have long been recognized as a serious hazard in underground coal mines. Recently, however, there have been some significant conveyor fires in Canadian underground hardrock mines. These offer important evidence as to the nature and causes of potential hardrock mine fifes. They also warrant attention with a view to improving over-all mine design, ventilation and emergency preparedness.In addition, a new era in mine communications and monitoring technology has been entered which should offer improved capability to protect against such fires. This paper was motivated by the need to understand the causes and mechanisms of conveyor fires in order to improve their safety. This should be possible through implementing more effective monitoring systems, as well as improving conveyor design. Underground mines are becoming more intensively mechanized, with less human surveillance of equipment and a greater dependency on remote monitoring systems."

In the past ten years, the Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) has arguably become the key document for tunnel construction. This report not only allocates much of the risk involved with the work, it serves as the basis for bid preparation and is used extensively in resolving disputes during construction. This paper discusses some important issues related to the GBR and presents suggestions for improving these vital reports.
